I have had several opportunities to work directly with animals and those who care for them. While I enjoyed these experiences, I also learned more about the challenges and rewards of working with animals. For example, during a week-long volunteer placement at a veterinary clinic, I was able to assist with practical tasks like preparing the operating table and holding animals during injections, as well as speaking with the staff about the potential difficulties and rewards of working with animals.

I had a weekend job at a stud and livery yard in 2018 where I mainly handled and groomed horses but also learned about the science behind artificial inseminations. The previous year, I worked as a farm hand at a pig and poultry farm for the summer where I was in charge of caring for the animals and gained an understanding of the maintenance of free-range and battery hens.

Biology and chemistry were two subjects I studied at college that gave me a lot of satisfaction. Scientists have continually demonstrated their ingenuity in unlocking the secrets of how living organisms function. Within animals, there is a beauty inherent in their processes that complements their external aesthetic. Studying science has also given me a solid understanding of the principles of scientific investigation and the central concepts underlying these subjects. With this foundation of knowledge and my extensive experience with animals, I am confident that I will be able to progress into higher education.

Wildlife conservation & zoology personal statement example.

Nature is all around us and are a large part of my life. As much of my free time as possible is spent kayaking, horse riding, climbing mountains, camping, and taking photos of or painting landscapes and wildlife. At university, I would like to study a course in conservation. I believe that learning how we can protect and restore the incredible world that we live in and the creatures that live on it is vital, so that future generations can enjoy it as much as me.

Growing up watching David Attenborough’s documentaries, exposed me to both how incredible the natural world is and the struggles faced by many species, especially in the light of global warming and pollution. In year 10 I was chosen to represent my school, as a select group, on a Geography trip to India. We were able to see first-hand the contrast in living standards and the effect that waste has on the people and wildlife living there. As I got older, I have looked more closely into how people can help animal populations to recover from the effects of human activity, through online research, documentaries, and TED talks.

As well as enriching my biological insight through studying Biology, I have enhanced my analytical and problem-solving skills and have learnt in more depth about biodiversity and how interrelated populations in an ecosystem are. Geography has helped me grow skills such as primary data collection, during my NEA investigation, and reasoning skills with fast paced essay writing. With Psychology I have gained a plethora of skills, such as critical thinking, organisation and communication through constant essays where we question why studies may have had these outcomes and the validity of these results.

For work experience, I volunteered for The Countryside Restoration Trust (CRT), who work with farmers on rewilding projects and promote sustainable farming. This enabled me to learn how conservation works in a real-life environment and gave me the opportunity to develop my survey skills by using methods such as walking transects to predict the populations of various species of wildlife. Carrying out these activities in the natural environment confirmed for me that I would like to work in conservation in the future.

When I took part in NCS, we worked to restore the gardens of an old peoples’ home. We helped to nurture the local wildlife and make it a nicer environment for the residents. During this, I developed teamwork skills and confidence and was nominated for the Changemaker course due to my leadership abilities. Through my part time job at Dominos, I have learnt a lot about working under pressure and remaining calm when dealing with difficult customers. I have proved myself to be hardworking, punctual and capable and have trained other employees.

Having been part of scouting and guiding from the age of five, I have done many camps, hikes and outdoor activities. I recently completed my Silver Duke of Edinburgh award, which grew my leadership as I motivated my team to get to each checkpoint. In addition, hiking expands my determination as I aspire to complete all the Wainwrights of the Lake District. Moreover, I have regularly helped at a local stable, aiding younger children and teaching them to ride.

I have also shown that I am responsible and trustworthy, as I am often entrusted with looking after other’s horses. Throughout my life I have enjoyed caring for many pets of my own, showing my diligence and reliability by cleaning their hutches and feeding them. Furthermore, I enjoy painting wildlife, showing creativity and have been studying an online photography course, in addition to my A-levels. Additionally, I play the piano and am working towards grade 7. This has grown my perseverance and being part of a band has helped me to work well with others.

I am excited about the opportunity of learning more about these areas that interest me at university and am also hoping to broaden my experience through travelling to gain work experience globally.

As far back as I can remember, I have been surrounded by animals. Whilst, as with most young children, their presence was initially a simple source of joy, as I have gotten older, I have become increasingly interested in – to put it simply – ‘how they work’. That is, I am fascinated by their internal structures and processes, and how these relate to their behaviour. Moreover, I am interested in how their specific characteristics – whether behavioural or physical – are related to their genetic composition, and how this has been shaped over the course of evolution. Furthermore, I am intrigued by the way in which people organise animals within our societies, and the impact that this has on the wider environment. It is because of this passion for animals that I wish to study them at university, and why I have endeavoured always to be around them.

In regard to this pursuit, I have undertaken several work placements that have involved working directly with animals and those that care for them. Whilst, of course, it was a pleasure to be involved in such work, I also gained a greater appreciation of what working with animals can involve. For instance, I spent a week volunteering with a veterinary group. Whilst there, I was able to assist in a variety of practical tasks, including preparing the operating table, holding animals during injections, and recording their weight. Additionally, I had the chance to speak to the staff, who, on one hand, emphasised to me the potential difficulties associated with working with animals, such as observing them in pain. On the other, however, I gained a sense of how rewarding it must be to have an advanced understanding of them and how this might be used to ensure their health.

Additionally, I initiated the development of a riding team for my school. This required that I recruit individuals and organise events to enable us to practise and compete. As a consequence, I have been able to develop my organisational skills and ability to work within a team, all the while working towards something that I greatly enjoy.

Having studied both biology and chemistry at college, I am aware that science is something that gives me a lot of satisfaction. I am continually impressed by the ingenious ways in which scientists have been able to unlock the secrets of how living organisms function. There is a beauty inherent in the processes that occur within animals that complements their external aesthetic. Moreover, studying science has, of course, given me a solid foundation of the principles of scientific investigation and of the central concepts upon which these subjects are based. I believe that this foundation of knowledge, in addition to my extensive experience of working with animals, will serve as a solid basis from which to progress into higher education.

Sample statement.

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by animals and the natural world. Throughout my childhood we had a variety of pets ranging from the usual cats and dogs to the more unusual quails and African snails. It was this early introduction to the amazing species found in the animal kingdom that inspired me to want to study Zoology in later life.

As I grew older I became more interested in the biological aspects of different species and how they ‘work’. With this in mind I worked hard to achieve good grades in Biology at school and spent many hours independently researching animals and how they functioned at a biological level.

As well as Biology I also excelled in the other science-based subjects and enjoyed Geography, Mathematics, and Modern Foreign Languages, in particular Spanish.

During my final years at secondary school and throughout college I held a weekend and holiday position as a groom for one of the top stud farm and livery yards in the country. This was a highly responsible position and I was often left in sole charge of the owner’s valuable stallions and other livestock.

This role taught me a lot about the characteristics and behaviour patterns of horses and how they interact both with each other and with humans and other species. I was involved in all practical tasks and was able to gain a better understanding of how artificial insemination works and the science behind it.

Outside of school and work I enjoy an active lifestyle and regularly compete my own horses, mostly at county level, although I have also competed at national show jumping competitions. I am also a volunteer puppy walker for my local Dogs for the Disabled group which involves fostering the puppies during their training and attending training and socialisation classes with them, as well as the managing their daily care.

I hope that by studying Zoology I will further develop my skills and knowledge of animals and this will enable me to gain a position working with animals, possibly at a zoo.

This personal statement was part of this student’s successful application to the  University of Exeter, University of Bristol, University of St Andrew’s, Lancaster University  and University of Sheffield  for Zoology.

The biology of animals has especially fascinated me, with their unique adaptations which allow them to flourish in their environment. I believe that learning about the biology and behaviour of animals will allow us to attain a better understanding of their needs, providing a more sustainable relationship between us and their environment. Through learning more about animals, I will be able to pursue my passion for animals and their conservation.

The efforts to conserve and explore the animal world have become more demanding than ever before because of the rapid encroachment of humans. We need to find solutions for humans and wildlife to co-exist with minimal conflict. My work experience with the Gibbon Protection Society of Malaysia has given me valuable insight into this challenge. All the gibbons in the center were rescued victims of the illegal pet trade with no experience of living in the wild. Learning how entire families are killed before one baby is caught and sold in the illegal pet trade has made me feel angry and sad. Witnessing the dedication of the conservationists who have persevered to rehabilitate and release baby and adult gibbons despite threats from poachers has strengthened my resolve to study and work in this field. With our limited knowledge about gibbon biology and society, rehabilitation efforts of conservationists have been hindered. The government has planned a new highway with viaducts which will bisect the planned release area for the gibbons to allow wildlife movement and migration. This is of no use to gibbons as they are almost purely arboreal and rarely come to the ground, preventing migration and further interaction between family groups, leading to inbreeding, and possibly extinction. People’s unfamiliarity with gibbons reinforces my drive to change the desperate fate of a species that we often neglect.

Last summer I volunteered at the Turtle Information Centre in Melaka which has an ongoing conservation project with the WWF. I had the opportunity to follow a ranger to observe both green and Hawksbill turtle landings and nesting. I learned that the major threats to turtles there are poaching and pollution. This experience made me realise how important it is to educate the public, especially in rural communities, to protect these creatures from human threats. 

Through reading National Geographic magazines, I have developed a love for animal anatomy and physiology. A recent photographic study on the unique energy-conserving flight techniques of hummingbirds was both beautiful and insightful. The Photo Ark project has deepened my interest for photography, motivating me to join the Your Shot photo community. This has spurred me to use this as a platform to help raise awareness about animal conservation and research. As the President of the Social Media Club, I have gained leadership and management skills while working with my team which has also aided my role as a senior prefect with responsibility to care for my juniors. This has allowed me to develop traits of empathy and understanding while caring for them in school. Also, through my love for running and music, I had the privilege to raise funds for cancer, hospice care and the Salvation Army.

I love writing, and I hope to use my writing skills in my work to promote a better understanding of animal behavior and conservation. I had the opportunity to present my experience at the Gibbon Protection Society to a professor and her students in University Malaya. The presentation was well-received by the listeners, giving me the confidence I need to express my passion for animals through writing. Working with conservationists and scientists in Malaysia has shown me how international sharing of information has been a great advantage for local conservation and research. Therefore, I believe that studying abroad will enable me to broaden my experience and give me a global outlook to pursue my ambition to better protect and understand animals.

Biological Natural Sciences Personal Statement

When Theodore Roszak wrote that nature composes some of her loveliest poems for the microscope and the telescope, I feel he captures the way that science gives us greater understanding of the world in which we live. With this understanding come opportunities to influence the lives we lead. It is my strong interest in science coupled with my inquisitive nature, thirst for knowledge and analytical thinking that compels me to read Natural Sciences. I aspire to work with others at the forefront of scientific knowledge to see how we can apply this knowledge to meet the challenges that unfold in the twenty-first century.

My A level studies have confirmed my interest in a range of scientific areas. After studying cell organelles in biology, I was captivated by reading ‘Power, Sex, Suicide: Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life’ by Nick Lane, delving deeper into the role of mitochondria in cellular function. Continuing to explore beyond the syllabus, reading ‘Genome’ by Matt Ridley and ‘H2O a Biography of Water’ by Philip Ball has fuelled my interest in other areas such as genetics and molecular biology. My enthusiasm for biology was recognised by being awarded the school Year 12 biology prize. In chemistry, exploring carbon nanotubes was exhilarating as I could see that they have enormous potential in diverse applications such as carrying drugs into specific body cells. It was during work experience at a local hospital I saw that scientists provide the tools for doctors and the significance of research in developing new, improved treatments. To explore further the application of science in different contexts, I attended ‘Chemistry in Action’ lectures at the Institute of Education, London.

I was inspired by speaking with scientists at the forefront of research whilst attending the Summer Science Exhibition at the Royal Society. Intrigued by the development of a nanocell to store clean energy using sunlight and that the cell contained porphyrin which is involved in photosynthesis, I realised that studying the structure and function of plants may provide vital information in developing new ways of storing energy. Keen to experiment, it was exciting to make and identify graphene, the first two dimensional atomic material and to explore the potential uses of this strong, transparent and highly conductive material. It is enthralling to consider how these current scientific developments may be applied in the future. Finding great satisfaction in problem solving and thriving on challenge, I have enjoyed studying mathematics, particularly learning new concepts such as calculus. My study of history has enhanced my analytical and essay writing skills. Moreover, it has given me a perspective on the relationship between science and society over the years.

Balancing my extra-curricular activities with my studies has required good time-management. I enjoy playing the piano and a range of sports including netball, tennis and skiing. Playing in the school netball team for the past six years has shown me the value of good teamwork. I have enjoyed volunteering weekly at Strathmore School for children with disabilities and successfully sought permission to organise an Easter Party for them which required initiative, creativity and management skills. Volunteering on the Whitgift Special Needs Activity Project has enhanced my communication and leadership skills and has made me aware of the challenges faced by those with disabilities and their families.

I believe that I have the skills, scientific curiosity and motivation required to learn from, and contribute to, this diverse and challenging course. Studying Natural Sciences will give me the flexibility to explore a wide range of scientific areas and will enable me to develop the skills to work with colleagues at the cutting edge of science.

Good Points Of The Personal Statement

Very well-written with a clear introduction, main body, and conclusion. This statement begins by setting the scene as to why Natural Science, and in particular, Biology, is important to both the world and the applicant. The student clearly explains their interest in Biology and then goes on to explain their interest in the other subjects covered as part of the Natural Sciences degree. Many prospective students forget to do this, and in this statement, every point is justified with examples from the student’s personal experiences which adds emphasis to the statement.

Bad Points Of The Personal Statement

At times this reads a bit like a list, and removing a few examples so that they could say more about those left would have produced a more impactful statement which would more adequately fulfil the requirements to show interest, ability, familiarity, ambition, and understanding of the course’s demands.

“The experiences I have had over the last two years at college and in employment have given me new perspectives on and changed my attitudes towards the natural world and the animal kingdom. For me it all started at college where I received what is sometimes referred to as the ‘Inconvenient Truth’ talk, it was a life changing experience that woke me up to the dangers facing our planet and got me interested in conservation, living organisms and in particular Zoology. My tutors were all very positive and encouraging and I am grateful to them for not only introducing me to this subject but also for helping me to grow intellectually for also teaching me new ways of thinking.

Towards the end of my final year at college and after learning a lot of theory about animal evolution, behaviour and physiology I decided that the time was right to gain some real life experience of working with animals. So over the summer months I worked on a voluntary basis at a local veterinary surgery. My goal was to gain practical experience of the medical and surgical treatment of animals. Although the work was unpaid I thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a great deal about the prevention and spread of disease in animals, the procedures for prescribing medicine, how to identify illness and the importance of maintaining accurate records.

All things considered I believe I would make an ideal candidate for your Zoology course for three main reasons. Firstly I feel I have a genuine passion for subject, secondly I possess the required academic qualifications and thirdly I have real life practical work experience of working with animals (after having been a unpaid volunteer in a veterinary surgery). All of these points will also hopefully demonstrate to you that I am well equipped to continue studying a subject that I already have considerable knowledge of. My commitment to Zoology can further be shown by the fact that even though I have been told that Zoology is not a ‘strong’ subject and may in some ways limit my ability to work in other well paid industries, I still feel attracted to it as it is a field of study that fascinates me and that I have a passion for. I am willing to forsake other more potentially ‘lucrative’ degree courses for something I really enjoy doing.

In the search for a suitable university to study at I have read through quiet a few prospectus’s and visited a number of campuses. I wanted to find a course that covered all the key areas I was interested in and also taught through a combination of lectures, field trips, online learning, tutorials and projects. I am pleased to say that your course and university ticked all the right boxes for me. Your universities location, superb transport links and close proximity to major geographical attractions also attracted me as well as the fact that several of my friends are current undergraduates at your university and they all speak very highly of your institution.”

What is a personal statement.

A personal statement is an essay written by a student applying to either a college or university. A personal statement is written and then uploaded to UCAS and is then attached to any university applications that the student may then make.

How to write a personal statement

There isn't a clearly defined personal statement template for you to use as each person's statement is different.

When it comes to writing a personal statement for universities, your personal statement should touch on your passions, your interest in the course, why you're applying for the course and why you would be an asset to the university you're applying to.

Talk about the clubs and societies that you belong to, any work experience you may have and any awards you might have won.

How to start a personal statement

When it comes to starting your personal statement, the best thing to do is to be succinct and to have enough tantalising information to keep the reader informed and eager for more.

Your introduction should touch on your personal qualities and why you are applying for the subject you're applying for. Keeping things short and sweet means that it also allows you to break your personal statement up, which makes it easier for the reader.

From a very early age, I have been fascinated by the astounding diversity of life on our planet. It is this lifelong interest that drives my enthusiasm for zoology and my desire to delve into the intricate mechanics that govern the world’s various ecosystems. I am drawn to the BSc Zoology degree because it possesses the rigor and depth that would enable me to deepen my understanding and contribute significantly to the field.

Being exposed to the awe-inspiring world of zoology for the first time in my A-level studies ignited a deep passion within me. The way organisms interact with their environment , how they adapt and evolve over time, the preservation of endangered species and the balance life maintains within ecosystems; these are all complex processes that have sparked a curiosity in me that I am eager to explore through this course.

My previous academic experience is directly related to this course. In high school, I took part in a research project investigating the impact of climate change on bird migration patterns. This experience ingrained in me the significance of research, the importance of data analysis and the fundamental role of deductive reasoning in scientific exploration.

Further that, I participated in an internship at a nearby wildlife reserve during my gap year. This was not only an intensive, hands-on experience, but it also provided me with a profound insight into various exotic species’ behavior and conservation needs. I witnessed the adverse effects of deforestation, climate change, and poaching, which strengthened my resolve to combat these issues. I fervently believe that with the comprehensive knowledge provided by this degree, I can contribute to wildlife preservation efforts in a more impactful way.

My life experiences have also shaped my passion for Zoology. Growing up on a farm exposed me to a diverse array of animals and their distinct behaviors from a very young age. This early exposure fostered my curiosity about animal behavior and the complex relationships between animals and their environment.

Apart from academic and work-related experiences, I have consistently participated in debates and quiz competitions, the highlight being a victory in a National level biology quiz competition. I take pride in my critical thinking and analytical abilities, which are crucial in research and wildlife conservation efforts.

The skills I bring to this course include observational capability, an aptitude for data analysis, an eagerness for fieldwork, and a keen interest in animal behavior. Moreover, I believe that my communication skills, honed through various public speaking events, will help me to mobilize change and make a significant impact in the field of zoology.

In terms of my future plans, I aspire to become a wildlife conservationist. I envision myself working with various international organizations devoted to wildlife preservation, contributing towards creating sustainable ecosystems, and raising global awareness about the importance of biodiversity. Undertaking the BSc Zoology degree is a critical step toward realizing this ambition as it will equip me with the scientific understanding and practical skills necessary to make a positive difference in the world.

In essence, I am an eager, dedicated, and passionate student aiming to leverage my degree to further my understanding of the animal kingdom, the cycles of life, and the problems confronting our biodiversity. I am not only ready to absorb the knowledge this program has to offer but also to contribute to this field with my experiences and enthusiasm. With the comprehensive education provided by this degree, I am confident of furthering the goal to explore, preserve, and celebrate the world’s rich biodiversity.
