When I look back to my first experience teaching five paragraph essays to fifth graders, I can remember how terribly unprepared I felt.

I knew that the five paragraph essay format was what my students needed to help them pass our state’s writing assessment but I had no idea where to start.

I researched the few grade-appropriate essays I could find online (these were the days before Pinterest and Teachers Pay Teachers) and determined that there was a structure to follow.

Every essay followed the same basic structure. I taught the structure to my students and they did well.

I have been teaching five paragraph essay structure and everything that goes with it for several years now. I hope that after you read this blog post, you will have a good understanding of how to teach and grade five paragraph essays.

Once you’ve learned all about teaching basic essay structure, you’ll be ready to grow your writers from “blah” to brilliant!

Start with Simple Paragraphs

We always start with simple paragraphs.

Yes, this is basic, but if your students cannot write excellent paragraphs, their five paragraph essays will be train wrecks. Trust me!

We spend a while cementing paragraph structure:

Topic Sentence

Closing Sentence

I give students topics, they come up with their own topics, we write together, they write with a partner or independently, the more variety, the better.

We have fun with simple paragraphs. Then, it’s time to move on to body paragraphs.

Organize and Write Body Paragraphs

Please refer to my five paragraph essay organizer below.

The three body paragraphs are absolutely crucial to the success of the five paragraph essay.

Some teachers have trouble teaching the structure of five paragraph essays because they start with the introduction paragraph.

Always teach the body paragraphs first!

I had a teacher say to me once, “What’s the point of just writing parts of the essay? They need to write the entire five paragraphs to get all of the practice they need.”

I understand that point. However, think of it as building a house. Should you test out the foundation and make sure it’s sound and sturdy before building on top of it? Absolutely! That’s what we’re doing here.

The three body paragraphs are the foundation of the essay.

Ask students to write out their three body paragraphs just like they have practiced…Topic sentence…Detail 1…Detail 2…Detail 3…Closing Sentence.

I “ooooh and aaaah” over their three paragraphs. Students are on their way to five paragraph essays, so be sure to build their confidence.

Teach the Introduction Paragraph

I have to say, this is my favorite paragraph to teach. The introduction paragraph is what draws readers into the essay and makes them want to read more.

We start with what I call a “hook.” The hook captures the readers’ attention and can come in many forms: asking a question, making a bold statement, sharing a memory, etc.

After the hook, I ask students to add a sentence or two of applicable commentary about the hook or about the prompt in general.

Finally, we add the thesis sentence. The thesis sentence always follows the same formula: Restate the prompt, topic 1, topic 2, and topic 3.

That’s all you need to write an excellent introduction paragraph!

I do suggest having students write the introduction paragraph plus body paragraphs a couple of times before teaching the closing paragraph.

Teach the Closing Paragraph

In the conclusion paragraph, we mainly focus on restating the thesis and including an engaging closing thought.

With my students, I use the analogy of a gift.

The introduction paragraph and body paragraphs are the gift and the conclusion paragraph is the ribbon that ties everything together and finishes the package.

When you talk about restating the thesis sentence, tell students that they need to make it sound different enough from their original thesis sentence to save their readers from boredom.

Who wants to read the same thing twice? No one!

Students can change up the format and wording a bit to make it fresh.

I enjoy teaching the closing thought because it’s so open to however students want to create it.

Ways to write the closing thought: ask a question, personal statement, call to action, or even a quote. 

I especially like reading the essays in which a quote is used as a closing thought or a powerful statement is used.

Let’s Talk About Color-Coding!

Who doesn’t like to color? This is coloring with a purpose!

Training your students to color-code their paragraphs and essays will make grading so much easier and will provide reminders and reinforcements for students.

When students color-code their writing, they must think about the parts of their paragraphs, like topic sentences, details, and the closing sentence.

They will be able to see if they are missing something or if they’ve written something out of order.

Color-coding is a wonderful help for the teacher because you can skim to ensure that all parts of your students’ paragraphs and essays are present.

Also, when you are grading, you can quickly scan the paragraphs and essays. Trust me, you will develop a quick essay-grading ability.

I start color-coding with my students at the very beginning when they are working on simple paragraphs. I add the additional elements of the color-code as we progress through our five paragraph essays.

Let’s Talk About Grading Five Paragraph Essays!

Imagine a lonely, stressed teacher grading five paragraph essays on the couch while her husband is working the night shift.

That was me!

Seriously, guys, I would spend about ten minutes per essay. I marked every little error, I made notes for improvement and notes of encouragement. I reworked their incorrect structure.

Those papers were full of marks.

On Monday, I proudly brought back the essays and asked students to look over them and learn what they needed to fix for next time.

You can guess what happened… there were lots of graded essays in the trashcan at the end of the day.

I decided that my grading practices had to change. I needed my weekends back and my students needed to find their own errors!

This is my best advice:

STOP correcting every error!

Your students are not benefiting from marks all over their writing. They need to find those errors themselves so that they will remember their mistakes and change their writing habits.

Do a quick scan of each student’s writing as soon as it’s turned in to you.

If there are major problems with a student’s writing, call him/her over individually and show him/her what needs to be fixed or put the student with a competent peer editor who will help them fix mistakes.

If you have several students who are struggling with a skill, like closing sentences, do a mini-lesson on this topic.

You can do a mini-lesson with a small group. However, I prefer doing mini-lessons with the entire class. The kids who need help will get it and the rest of your class will receive a refresher.

It’s OK if there are some small spelling/grammar mistakes!

If the errors are few and they don’t take away from the meaning/flow of the essay, I don’t worry about them.

Our students are still learning.

Even your brightest star writer will have a few spelling/grammar mistakes from time to time.

Don’t discourage students from writing because of small errors.

Students who receive papers back with markings all over them don’t think, “Oh boy, my teacher has made it so easy for me to make all of these corrections.” They are thinking, “What’s the point in writing? I must be a terrible writer. Look at all of these mistakes.”

If your students are taking a standardized writing assessment, the structure and flow of their essays will be worth much more than perfect spelling.

Grading rubrics can be of great benefit to both you and your students. For you, a rubric saves time and decreases subjectivity. Specific criteria are explicitly stated, facilitating the grading process and increasing your objectivity. For students, the use of grading rubrics helps them to meet or exceed expectations, to view the grading process as being “fair,” and to set goals for future learning. In order to help your students meet or exceed expectations of the assignment, be sure to discuss the rubric with your students when you assign an essay. It is helpful to show them examples of written pieces that meet and do not meet the expectations. As an added benefit, because the criteria are explicitly stated, the use of the rubric decreases the likelihood that students will argue about the grade they receive. The explicitness of the expectations helps students know exactly why they lost points on the assignment and aids them in setting goals for future improvement.

• Routinely have students score peers’ essays using the rubric as the assessment tool. This increases their level of awareness of the traits that distinguish successful essays from those that fail to meet the criteria. Have peer editors use the Reviewer’s Comments section to add any praise, constructive criticism, or questions.
• Alter some expectations or add additional traits on the rubric as needed. Students’ needs may necessitate making more rigorous criteria for advanced learners or less stringent guidelines for younger or special needs students. Furthermore, the content area for which the essay is written may require some alterations to the rubric. In social studies, for example, an essay about geographical landforms and their effect on the culture of a region might necessitate additional criteria about the use of specific terminology.
• After you and your students have used the rubric, have them work in groups to make suggested alterations to the rubric to more precisely match their needs or the parameters of a particular writing assignment.

Autobiography Rubric

5th grade autobiography unit.

This is a lesson plan can be used to add technology to your classroom. Students will creae an Narrative autobiography in both a media form and a 5 paragraph essay. 

Students will be writing an autobiography in an in person lesson that requires them to learn and understand steps of an autobiography, publish a written copy, and publish a form of technology to go along with their lesson that will be presented to the class. Students can use pages, iMovie, or Garageband to create their technology piece.

Background for Teachers

To teach this lesson you will need an understanding of the 5th grade writing process as well as what needs to be taught to teach autobiography writing. You will also need a basic understanding of how to use pages, iMovie, and Garageband.

Step 1 - Goals and Outcomes

Step 1: Goals and Outcomes

Students will be able to write a 5 paragraph autobiography and present their life story to the class using a form of media/technology. 

Writing Standard 3

Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally.

Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, description, and pacing, to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations.

Use a variety of transitional words, phrases, and clauses to manage the sequence of events.

Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.

Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or event

Writing Standard 6

With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of two pages in a single sitting.

Step 2 - Planning Instruction

Prior to beginning their autobiographies tell students that an autobiography tells the story of someone’s life written by that person. To get ideas flowing about their own life students can create an ABC list of things about themselves. Ex. A is for apples which is my favorite fruit. U is for Utah because that is where I live. Students could create this using words or pictures.

Step 3 - Instruction

Students will fill out a graphic organizer to plan their autobiographies. They should start with a brainstorm where they can reflect on who they are and what they want to include in their autobiography. Remind students they will be telling their life story in narrative form. When they tell the story it will flow in order from their first part of life, growing up, their family, to their next part of life like school, and friends, etc.

Hopes and Dreams for the Future

Interesting Facts about themselves

Schools attended and teachers

Current Hobbies and Talents

Favorite School Memories

Favorite things like; food, sport, school subject, candy, TV show, movie, book, restaurant, music, super hero. Etc…

Remind students a narrative should include:

Beginning: This is where you will introduce yourself. Remember you are to tell the story of your life, so go in chronological order. Tell events in the order they happened. 

Middle: Each body paragraph will progress to different major events in your life. Start with your family, school and friends, and end with what makes you unique. Remember to keep this in a narrative story-like format, of your life.

End: This is the conclusion of your autobiography. Here you wrap up your thoughts and leave lasting impressions with your reader. 

Their 5 paragraph graphic organizer should include:

Introduction: Introduce my name, age and where I was born. Include one or two interesting facts about myself.

First, 

This paragraph will be about my family. Dad and Mom, brothers and sisters. Tell a story about a favorite family memory. 

Next, 

This is about school and friends. 

Then, 

What makes me unique? Interesting story about something that has happened to me, 

In conclusion,

Where am I currently in life? What am I doing daily? Activities, jobs, sports…

*Once their graphic organizers are complete they will type a final copy.

Last: 

Students can use ipads, computers, or class ipods to take pictures of the things they want to use in their digital presentation. They may also bring pictures from home that they may want to use. Baby pictures, family events, etc. 

Students can then choose if they want to create a flyer in pages of their life, an imovie with pictures and descriptions of their life, or a podcast recorded reading of them telling their life story in Garageband. 

Step 4 - Assessments

Attached is a Rubric for the students 5 paragraph autobiography as well as the Rubric for their media presentation. Part of their assessment will also be presenting to the class. This is attached to the media presentation rubric.

5 Paragraph Essay Rubric: Guide for Easy Grading of Academic Papers

Sometimes, professors fail to provide their students with essay grading rubrics - they frequently forget to do so or think it is unnecessary. After all, the information can be found on the internet. Still, some sources are reliable, and some are not, and in some instances, you may run into a 5 paragraph essay rubric that has little to do with reality and the criteria, which will be applied for grading your paper. For you to avoid such unwanted issues, we have prepared this post, which contains the essential information on grading five paragraph essays and the requirements applied for such grading.

A General Five Paragraph Essay Rubric

In your five-paragraph essay, you have to include the following elements:

• Introduction, which contains an attention-grabber, the thesis statements , and an overview of three main points of your essay (optional).
• In your first body paragraph, you will address your first point and tie it to the thesis. This paragraph should show the transition to the next body section.
• In your second body paragraph, you will address your next idea and tie it to the thesis as well.
• The third body paragraph. That requires discussing the third point analyzing the topic from another angle. It should be relevant and well-supported.
• Your conclusion can review your three points made, restate the thesis once more, and evaluate the reasonability of highlighting a chosen subject matter.

So, five main elements for this assignment. But now, let's return to the rubric issue and consider which standards your essays need to adhere to earn a certain grade:

• A. Excellent work. Your superior essay included everything needed for being assessed highly. The strong introductory paragraph which stated the thesis properly included an attention grabber then supporting it with the arguments. There is more elaboration on them in the respective body paragraphs (5), and each of those includes a topic sentence. The structure and formatting are accurate in terms of your academic level. All the arguments are supported with strong evidence and reasonably explained in detail. The essay included a sufficient amount of transitional words and phrases that show the overall coherence of the paper. The language is clear and precise: it doesn't contain colloquialisms, personal subjective opinions, passive constructions, redundancies, etc. Such an essay ends with a strong conclusion which either revisits the arguments and restates the thesis while providing no new information or strengthen the author's main intentions. All the information borrowed from reliable sources cited well, and the paper has got a correctly arranged bibliography page.
• B. Good performance. Such an essay should adhere to the same standards, while it may have a few insignificant grammar mistakes and typos. For instance, an author expressed an interesting idea but didn't support it properly. Or, the structure can be affected a little.
• C. A plain paper. Such a paper has a good introduction, provides reasonable information on the background of the topic, but fails to state a strong thesis or support it with solid arguments. Such an essay might not have significant grammar or spelling issues, but the writer's stance and view on a topic can be irrelevant or weak. Sometimes, a structure in a paper like that is not properly followed, and the references are redundant.
• D. A poorly written paper . In this case, both the introduction and the thesis are weak, too simple, or aren't related to the topic properly. The paper is structured poorly, and a student failed to include evidence and enough proper examples in the paragraphs, which makes it too generalized and plain. The conclusion is either absent or incomplete. The paper contains a significant number of major grammar and stylistic errors, which don't allow one to understand a writer's central idea properly.
• F. An unsatisfactorily written paper that has a weak introduction and doesn't have a thesis. There are errors in mechanics of building the structure and providing examples. In a five paragraph essay, a student might fail to include a sufficient amount of paragraphs or met the word count requirements. Also, there is no elaboration on reason for including particular evidence (if any) in the text. In the F case, the writing does not have a conclusion. The quality of an essay is also poor, and the paper contains a large number of grammar mistakes and typos in each body paragraph, which do not allow one to understand its content well.

We would like to emphasize once more: this is a general case of a 5 paragraph essay rubric. There could be variations implemented by both educational establishments and by professors themselves. Let us consider some of those.

5 Paragraph Essay Rubric: High School

It would be wrong to assume that there exists some sort of a five paragraph essay rubric high school, which is different from a rubric designed for college students or universities. Still, there are certain peculiarities. For example, different word count or a need to refer to particular data sources. Also, keep in mind that when grading a high school paper, a professor can be much less demanding when it comes to formatting citations, the use of academic vocabulary, and even your ability to formulate a stance. Not all of those rules are obligatory, but it does not mean you can neglect them. It is also obvious that a high school student is expected to be much more experienced in academic essay writing and submit assignments on time.

5 Paragraph Essay Rubric: Middle School

The differences one may find in five paragraph essay rubric for middle school are minor. Here, formatting and citations can be paid even less attention to. But usually, the assessment of the essay is based on the same criteria. Thus, the rubric we have offered above is quite a universal one, and you can refer to it when working on your paper as well as proofreading it.
