How to apply

What are the phd in psychology admission requirements.

Applicants must provide the following information for  admission  to Capella programs and specializations:

• A master’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution
•  Your official master’s transcripts, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
• A valid, government-issued form of photo identification

GRE and GMAT are not required for admission.

If you completed your most recent academic coursework, degree, or credential at an institution outside the United States, regardless of your citizenship or where you currently live, you are considered an international applicant.

• EPSY 6194: Four doctoral seminars are required. These are designed to provide in-depth exploration and discussion of current topics in special education such as law and policy, issues relating to persons with behavior disorders and learning disabilities, literacy, theory and academic writing. These can be taken out of sequence, and occasionally, in a different program with the advisor’s approval.  

Research Methods (9 Credits):

EPSY Scholars Program

The Department of Educational Psychology also offers the EPSY Scholars Program, which has the following goals:

• To provide a mechanism for students to engage in research work that will result in peer-reviewed publications for the student.
• To facilitate faculty opportunity to support and prepare high-achieving graduate students.

EPSY Scholars will receive a 10-hour graduate assistantship from the Department of Educational Psychology for up to four years, contingent on satisfactory academic standing and consistent completion of program requirements (i.e., annual submission of a progress update and plan for committee review). This is paired with an additional 10-hour graduate assistantship (provided by the advisor or program), so all EPSY Scholars will be fully funded for at least four years. The EPSY Scholars Program is intended to be a competitive program that will support recruitment of nationally competitive Ph.D. students and will facilitate these students’ engagement with active scholarship during their program.

How to Apply  

Prospective Educational Psychology doctoral scholars must meet the admission criteria of both the Graduate School and the Department of Educational Psychology.

Ph.D. applications are due by December 1 for admission the following Fall. Applicants who submit by December 1 will be considered for funding opportunities (graduate assistantships, teaching assistantships). Applications are welcome after December 1 but may not be eligible for funding.

Andrea Witkin

Dr. Andrea Witkin has spent the last decade as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Research Methods at the University of Southern California (USC). In addition to Research Methods, Dr. Witkin has taught Policy, Human Behavior, and Program and Practice Evaluation. Professor Witkin has an extensive background in Research and Practice conducting and designing behavioral interventions for at-risk youth. As a Research Project Director at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute (now Semel Institute), Dr. Witkin has worked with diverse populations on numerous federally funded grants aimed at reducing sexual risk behaviors among adolescents and people living with HIV. She has also collaborated on research grants with International Universities, such as La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, where she co-facilitated a three-year study on homeless and runaway youth. She has strong interests in areas related to adolescent mental health, school violence, and evaluation efficacy of behavioral interventions.

Dr. Witkin works with many community agencies and partners, including First 5 LA and the ABC Unified School District. She previously helped the school district implement and design program evaluations and standards of best practice. Professor Witkin currently implements and evaluates the efficacy of programs aimed at reducing child maltreatment and neglect as well as poverty alleviation.

The psychology major  is a traditional undergraduate program  held at our Winona campus. In addition, students enrolled in other fields of study can choose to minor in psychology.

B.S. in Applied Psychology

An online program designed for students who have already earned some college credits, the B.S. in Applied Psychology  is an accelerated program focused on helping them complete their degree. Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota accepts transfer credits from a wide variety of schools, educational programs, and life experiences.

M.A. in Counseling and Psychological Services

Earn an advanced counseling degree either online or by attending in-person classes in Minneapolis or Rochester or our online cohort. The M.A. in Counseling and Psychological Services  program can be completed in 2.5 years and prepares students to qualify as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in Minnesota.

M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy

Taught on campus in Minneapolis , our M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy  program prepares counselors to help couples and families achieve and maintain emotionally healthy relationships with each other and within their communities. Graduates are prepared to seek licensure with the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Doctor of Psychology in Counseling Psychology

This on-campus program (Minneapolis) was created for students who have already earned a master’s degree and want to pursue a doctorate. There also is an opportunity for students to take advantage of an accelerated program that combines early entry into the M.A. in Counseling and Psychological Services program and direct transition into the Psy.D. in Counseling Psychology  program.

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota also offers an Online Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies  for students who want to earn a counseling degree focusing on clients with substance use disorder. Drug use that leads to suicide, overdose, and broken communities is on the rise, and there is a real need for counseling degree holders who specialize in this field.   Upon completion of this program and licensure from the State of Minnesota, pursue a career as a mental health or chemical health counselor, treatment program supervisor, in-patient mental or chemical health treatment provider, or intensive outpatient treatment provider.
