The biggest influence in my life up to this moment has been my sister, Ilana. Throughout my entire life, from my birth onward she has continued being a blend of irritation, support, and compassion. Just last year, as a more careless freshman prioritizing my social life over school, my sister was putting everything she had into graduating. Despite the looming stress and pressure of graduation, my sister would take time out of her studies to help me with my homework or explain a concept that I didn't understand. When I would make bad choices my sister would remind me to focus on long term achievements such as college. Despite many challenges, one of the greatest including COVID-19, she left home at 19 to go to university. This was one of the bravest things I've ever seen my sister do, taking a plunge into the unknown. My sister is a sister, from different mother, being a sibling of her is in itself a great pleasure and a blessing from the god. A sister disguised in a sister-in-law is a cherry on the cake. Life have always given me some prodigious relationships in life, but my sister has always been a super power, my sense of strength, my angel for life.

My sister have always played different starring roles in my life, be it a mother, elder sibling, the younger sibling, cousin or as sister in law and hence I call my sister an angel, because I believe only an angel can play these many roles in one’s life. A sister is somebody with whom you can share anything, anytime, anywhere without any hesitation.

The ever young beauty with brains is always admirable and a young scientist is always inspiring. My sister have always been a guiding book without whom, taking a step ahead is risky. I have always seen different advertisement where they show multiple hands of a women, the similar advertisement comes to my mind when i see my sister managing different things at a time. Hence my sister is an angel indeed.

My sister have always supported me all through my life, starting from my childhood, she has always been a hero to me.

My sister have been playing different roles in my life. And it is only she who can play these roles so perfectly at every point of life. My sister always have been brightening my life like a star. It is only her, with whom a real life “Hum aapke hain kaun” part 2 could be possible. It is only my sister who could be a sister, a friend, a mother, a sister-in-law, a teacher, actually a lifeline from the god.

The friend phase

My sister have always been my best friend ever, she can be called my 3’ am friend. Yes, of course she have always been my friend without whom I cannot move a step ahead. Without a friend like her, life would have been the most monotonous.

She is the one without whom, a shopping is incomplete, visiting market is incomplete, going out for breakfast; lunch; dinner is incomplete, watching a movie is incomplete and what not. I feel totally incomplete without her.

The never ending nights while gossiping, never ending nights while trying different clothes and the never ending discussions on certain mutual matters. My sister is a friend whom I can trust eyes closed, eyes open or probably without eyes or rather I would say without any sense organ.

The mother phase

My sister always have been there for me like a mother, the most caring nature for me, the most different nature, which is hard to describe in words or let’s say the nature which only a mother can have. It is only her who can wake up entire night for me when I am not well, she is only one who can drive me to any level be it emotionally, mentally or physically.

My sister have an innate power in her to drive me to any extent. In short she is a complete feeling of love, care and affection which only can be felt through a mother. Oh! Yes she has produced certain traits in me, which not only boosted my confidence and have taught me how to live life elegantly.

The fighting phase

The most amazing phase with her is the fighting phase, no one could have ever fight, the way we fight as sisters. We fight as if we are no one to each other, we as sisters can fight for entire day and night to prove each other. Or instead I would say it can last for many days and nights, without speaking to each other. One fine day has to come when we cannot resist ourselves from talking to each there.

Therefore I believe where there are humans, fights are necessary to happen, but whom we love and care for, that fine day has to come where we cannot resist ourselves from talking, loving or caring for each other. It is being said that true fights generate love within each other. And I definitely believe with the fact as after every fight the bonding within us is stronger.

Sister-in-law phase

Where there is trust, everything is fine in itself. We know it very well, how to tackle this phase of life. It is our dream of life to stay together always and always together no matter what. My sister very well know how tackle me, command me through this phase of our life. And we as sister-in-law put up our best to prove our sisterhood to the world.

My lifeline, in fact my world, indeed my everything

I just want to mention, that my sister is my world, my lifeline and everything to me, I want to tell you my sister that, when you are around world seems alright, everything seem just perfect. We as family are totally incomplete without you. One thing I could give you in my life, is the ability to see you through my eyes.

My sister is my idol without whom I simply cannot walk through my life. To explain the bonding it is as simple as that I am incomplete without my sister like a candle without light, a bus without tires, a mother without her child.

Siblings represent the longest relationships of all, but in psychology they are among the least understood.
New research traces sibling dynamics into early adulthood to show the unique bonds of sisterhood.
Even though you may not have a sister, it is worth trying to find emotional support from a nonromantic peer.

Of all possible family relationships, those with siblings have the potential to be not only the longest but the strongest. You are united with your brother or sister in a union that can persist for decades, far longer than any with a friend or romantic partner. If you have a sibling , think for a moment about the early experiences that shaped who each of you are today. If you don’t have a sibling, ponder the relationship that you have or had with close cousins or family friends.

Because siblings first “meet” when they are young, their developmental trajectories become interlaced with other key early milestones. Siblings are together throughout all the major life events of childhood and adolescence , from losing a first tooth to having a first romantic partner. They also can form an alliance to protect each other from a variety of other key figures including parents, teachers, or the other neighborhood children.

Despite the obvious importance that siblings have and can have for each other, research in this area is virtually nonexistent. Fortunately, a new study taking a longitudinal (long-term) approach provides valuable new insights into this fascinating area of family dynamics.

Defining the Key Factors in Sibling Relationships

According to Pennsylvania State University’s Susan McHale and colleagues (2024), even with some growing interest in this field, there are few that follow sibling patterns into adulthood. The Penn State researchers took advantage of an existing study of 201 families begun in 1995-96 which continued for 18 years across nine times of testing. At the study’s outset, the average age of the firstborns was 12 years, about 18 months older than the secondborns. The sibling pairs were divided almost equally by pairing of the sex of the child. By the end of the study, there were 61 families left, and the firstborns averaged 28.7 years, and the secondborns 26. At each test point, their parents participated as well.

If you’ve been a sibling yourself, you can probably guess what the key variables of interest were, namely intimacy and conflict. In general, prior research supports the commonsense idea that conflict tends to decrease and intimacy to increase as siblings move beyond their direct involvement with each other in the nuclear family and out into the world. The research question guiding the study was whether these patterns could be predicted by sibling sex pairings and family position. The authors also chose to include measures of expressivity to find out how this factor, typically stronger in women, might influence the unfolding of relationship patterns over time.

The Trajectory of Sibling Relationships into Adulthood

McHale and her coauthor team tackled these complex issues by using statistical methods that allowed them to chart changes within family constellations on the variables of conflict and intimacy. They also were able to stack the data so that they could construct an “accelerated longitudinal design,” meaning that instead of only having nine years at their disposal, they could statistically construct a nearly 25-year time span (from ages 7 to 31).

If you would like to see how you would score on their main sibling variables, try rating your relationship with your own sibling or another close family member if you’re an only child. An example of an intimacy question was “How much do you share your inner feelings or secrets with (sibling)?” For conflict, ask yourself, “How often do you feel mad or angry at your sister/brother?” Each of these would be rated on a scale of 1 (not at all) to 5 (very much). Participants also rated the warmth and conflict with their children with statements such as “I understand my child’s problems and worries” (warmth) and, for conflict, in areas including appearance, social life , health, money, behavior/ personality , and sibling relationships. Finally, items measuring expressivity asked participants to rate such qualities as sensitivity and kindness.

Given the many possible combinations of sibling dyads along with parental measures, the analyses required a considerable degree of honing. Eventually, using sophisticated longitudinal analytical methods, the authors were able to chart not only patterns of change, but the family structural variables that influenced those patterns.

Overall, the findings showed, as the authors predicted, increases in intimacy and decreases in conflict, but not in a straight linear fashion. Intimacy declined slightly up through early adolescence and then continued to increase until it leveled off in early adulthood. Conflict showed precisely the opposite pattern. The adolescence-early adulthood period, then, presented a critical turning point.

Influencing the nature of these changes over time, however, was the sex of the sibling dyad. There was a “curvier” pattern for sisters than brothers, especially in the mid-20s. Additionally, sister-sister pairings were more positive, supporting prior findings that “sisters may serve as the glue that holds a sibling dyad together, at least until young adulthood." After that, a pattern of “selective optimization” sets in as even the closest of sisters find that they have to divide their emotional attention among their own families as well as toward their work.

With respect to emotional expressivity, the findings further accentuated the role of sister-siter pairings, who generally had more positive relationships. In the words of the authors, the findings are consistent with previous research showing that “ happiness is a feminine partner."

The warmth that parents expressed toward their siblings further influenced the dynamics of conflict and intimacy. When parents showed greater warmth toward their children, the siblings got along better, too, supporting “the enduring importance of close relationships with mothers." The role of the father was somewhat different, in that having a less warm father seemed related to greater intimacy between siblings, as if they need to form stronger bonds when the family relationship climate becomes strained.

Getting the Most Out of Your Sibling Relationships

As you can see from the findings, time may erode some of the closeness between even the closest of siblings, but not due to lack of love or warmth. Life can get in the way of even the best sister-sister pairing. You may not be the best of friends with your sister now (if you are a sister) but chances are that, over time, the bottom line will not erode.

Regarding the “feminine partner” effect of warmth, the authors turn to socialization as an explanation rather than anything intrinsic about biological sex. “ Gender roles and ideologies” appear to be just as likely a possibility as inheritance.

The obvious question you may be asking is whether, if you have no sister, your life is fated to lack a key emotional dimension. The findings suggest that the unique quality of sister-sister pairing may be worth trying to achieve with other people in your life. You may be too busy now, but as some of those obligations that preoccupy young adults lessen, it is possible that sisters can return to their previous levels of intimacy.

What if you have a sibling from whom you’ve become estranged? Looking at these results may help you understand how this situation evolved, and maybe why it may be worth giving intimacy another try.

To sum up, having a sister if you’re a sister seems to offer unique emotional rewards beyond the years of childhood. Finding intimacy with people who are not your romantic partner may provide you with these rewards as your life trajectory unfolds.

As we approach middle age, my sister and I have spoken frequently about how different our circumstances are compared to our social circles. We know we will not receive any inheritance as our parents have no assets, whereas most of our friends expect to receive significant or even life-changing amounts. Because of this, we live more modest lives compared to our close friends despite our household incomes being very similar, as we are prioritizing saving for retirement and paying off our mortgages before old age. I am single and childless but my sister has been married for over 10 years and has three small children. Recently, my brother-in-law casually mentioned to me how much he stands to inherit from his parents. It is an astronomical sum of money and I had no idea his parents were so wealthy. He clearly thought I was already aware of his circumstances and their plans for this money. My sister has never even hinted at this.

Rationally, I know his inheritance is none of my business and my sister was not obligated to tell me anything but I feel so betrayed. She has always spoken as if we are facing the same financial future but in reality, her family will practically be millionaires. It’s made worse by the fact that over the years I have loaned them a lot of money. Sometimes for urgent issues like medical bills and other times for fun things like a trip to Disney for the kids. They have never mentioned trying to pay any of the money back. This never bothered me and I felt proud that I was able to help my family in this way. Now I just feel resentful. Am I wrong to feel this way?

Dear In the Dark,

Ouch. I understand why this revelation stings. You and your sister have long shared an “us against the world” mentality when it comes to your finances. Learning she’s actually on a very different path is jarring, to say the least. But it doesn’t have to be the end of your relationship.

First, give yourself permission to feel everything that’s surfacing: Betrayal, resentment, confusion—they’re all valid emotions and understandable. Once the initial wave of emotion crests, however, try to muster up some empathy and grace. Perhaps your sister wasn’t deliberately deceiving you. Maybe she felt awkward or conflicted about her in-laws’ wealth. Maybe it felt like her husband’s future money, not “theirs” or “hers.” Or the inheritance always felt distant and theoretical, not relevant to her day-to-day life. Her secrecy likely comes from her own confusion rather than a malicious intent to deceive. It’s also possible that she doesn’t have a clear idea of what’s coming, despite what your brother-in-law said. When you feel ready, consider having a heart-to-heart with her about this. Use “I” statements to share how you felt blindsided and hurt to find out you and she actually aren’t in the same space money-wise. Then, listen. Give her a chance to share her perspective. You may find her motivations and feelings are more complex than they appear.

As for the loans, well, they aren’t really loans, are they? They sound like gifts, since you never had anything in writing or formalized when and how your sister would pay you back. In any case, they’re separate from the inheritance issue. You wanted to help your sister and her children. So, focus on the pride you felt in helping your family, both for necessities and experiences. Those gifts came from love, not obligation. If you’d like to reset expectations going forward, you can clarify that future assistance will be limited. But let your past generosity stand untainted.

Now, about you: You’re obviously disciplined financially and a kind, caring person. You’re making prudent choices for your own security and peace of mind. That’s something to be proud of. Don’t let this new information get in the way of your generosity or your ability to save and plan for the future. In fact, if you can pass these lessons down to your sister’s children, you’ll be doing them the greatest favor. I know it’s easier said than done, but try to stop comparing yourself to your sister. Your sister’s path is her own. Yours is still one of diligence and thoughtfulness, even without a secret inheritance. It sounds like you have enough, and you’re OK with that. Which, for my money, is the definition of happiness. With time and openness, you can find your way back to treasuring what you share as sisters, while respecting that you each have your own journey.

I’m about to graduate, and due to extreme luck on my end, become financially independent for the first time in my life. I also have dyscalculia , which severely impacts my ability to conceptualize numerical concepts around costs, and I grew up in a home where one parent was financially abusive to the other, and to a different extent, to myself. I’m having difficulty figuring out what a realistic budget should look like from month to month, and what “good” balances would be between allotments for necessary costs, “spending” money, and savings. I recognize that a balance between the three is ideal, but I don’t know what a good model would be. I simultaneously don’t know where to begin and start feeling guilty when I try to estimate a monthly budget for non-necessities, such as coffee or longer-distance bus fare to visit friends. This blind spot is not sustainable in the long term, but I don’t know where to start. Do you have any general budget percent breakdowns you’d suggest or any models to look into? And related, do you have any budgeting apps you recommend?

—Numbers Aren’t My Friend

Dear Numbers Aren’t My Friend,

You sound like the kind of person who’d really benefit from pre-set budgets. Fortunately, there are a number to choose from. Here are a few you might consider:

Option one: The 50/30/20 budget. This budget divides your take-home pay into three buckets: Needs, wants, and savings. Sort the money you spend each month into those three percentages and adjust as necessary. You can also try the 80/20 budget, which is a variation where you put 20 percent of your take-home pay into savings and then spend the rest. The 80 percent might be too unspecific for you, but if you have debt, you can modify this to 70/20/10, which means you spend 70 percent of your take-home pay on your expenses, 20 percent on savings, and 10 percent on debt.

Option two: The envelope method, also known as the “cash in hand” method. Label an envelope for each of your regular monthly expenses, like your rent or mortgage, utilities, cell phone, transportation, debt, savings, food, entertainment, etc. Then, cash your paycheck and place the amount you’re going to spend on a specific category of expense each month in its envelope. Once you’ve used up the cash, you’re done spending in that category for the month. Because some of your payments will be digital, you can put a slip of paper in the envelope that represents that payment. Don’t forget to include 1/12 of any annual expenses and one-sixth of any semi-annual expenses. You might need an auto or homeowner’s insurance envelope for these non-regular expenses.

Option three: The go-to-zero method. In my work helping people make better decisions about their money, I created this take on zero-based budgeting, which helps you mentally wipe your financial slate clean. Start by writing down every cent you spend on a slip of paper or an index card. Then, take a separate piece of paper and write down your take home pay. Next, sort your cards so that each expense is in order of priority: Rent/mortgage, insurance, transportation, food, etc. You get to decide which comes first. Take the top priorities and put them down on the table in front of you and subtract the expense from the page with your take home pay. So, if your rent is $2,000 per month and your take-home pay is $5,000 per month, subtract the $2,000 and you’ll see you’re left with $3,000 to spend during the month. If the next bill is food for $1,000, you’ll be left with $2,000 to spend—and so on. When you’re out of money, you stop spending. Everything else gets cut from your budget.

What’s nice about my go-to-zero plan is that you get to see where and how you’ll run out through your cash, allowing you to make adjustments. If you notice that you’ll have an extra $150 at the end of the month, you can plan to spend it, pay down debt, or stash it in your emergency account. (As I told another letter writer recently, having too much money is never a problem, it just gives you options and opportunities .)

Finally, you say numbers aren’t your friend, but the fact that you’re asking these questions means you’re thinking about money the right way. And, with some practice, you’ll realize that building in some next-level necessities, like bus fare to visit friends and family, and even occasional treats, like those coffees or other fun things you’ll want to experience in your adult life, are possible. The good news is there are plenty of free apps online, or you can pay for something more robust. I’ve been using Quicken for more than 30 years, but an online spreadsheet (Google or Excel) will work just as well. The point isn’t the technology. It’s committing to spend significantly less than you make. That’s how you’ll become financially independent and start to build generational wealth.

I work full-time but my wife works part-time because while the money is good at my job, the insurance is crap. Hers is pretty generous. We depend on my mother-in-law to watch our 3-year-old twins but her health isn’t good. She has repeatedly told us that once the twins are in preschool, she is scaling back to babysitting occasionally and we need to make alternate plans.

I have been looking into daycares around us because most are pretty competitive for parents. We are on the waiting list for a few. Out of the blue, my wife told me that she wants to have another child and to quit her job to stay at home. Her solution is for me to find a “better” job with good insurance. Honestly, there aren’t any in my field unless I quit entirely and try something else. Frankly, the idea of trying to switch careers without having my wife’s job to fall back on and trying for a new baby just makes me feel sick. When we first got married we agreed to just have two kids and juggling twins is more than enough for me. We’ve been fighting about the subject for a while and every time I ask my wife to spell out how this scenario works, she just says we will make it work. We are on a waiting list to see a counselor but I don’t know what to do in the meantime. Help!

—Two Is Enough

Dear Two Is Enough,

I feel for you and your wife. Navigating childcare logistics, career paths, and differing family size preferences is a lot, especially with twins in the mix. But just because you agreed to something early on in your relationship doesn’t make it a lifetime commitment. If you learn nothing else as a parent, things change: with your kids, sure, but also with your job(s) and even the so-called deals you make with your spouse.

You and your wife need to stop fighting and start listening to each other. Share your feelings, fears, and practical concerns about parenting and your relationship. Focus on the good stuff while you try to understand her desires and vision for your family. She loves being a mom. That’s a good thing, but not the only thing in a marriage.

Living on one income is harder than it looks, but it can be done if both people are on the same page. So, write out the nitty-gritty details together on paper. Research insurance options and crunch the reality of living on one income. Talk about how easy/hard it might be to find another job in a different field or with better insurance. Will you save money on daycare and babysitting? Will your wife take on more of the cooking, cleaning, and managing of your daily lives? Map out best and worst-case scenarios, and talk about what happens and how you might feel as you go through it. Having concrete data can move you from vague notions of “making it work” to solid plans.

I think you also need to talk about what’s changed for her. What’s driving her longing for a third child and being a stay-at-home mom? Does she love being a mother more than she thought? Is she unhappy at her job and believes this is a better way to spend her life? Is she sad that the twins are growing up and into the next phase of life? (I remember how that felt—heart wrenching!) Ask a lot of questions and then listen with curiosity and kindness. Be honest with her about your own vision for your family and limited bandwidth for more kids. You’re allowed to have preferences, too.

Consider compromises and phases, rather than an all-or-nothing shift. Could she continue working enough hours to keep her insurance? Remind her that in a few short years, when the kids aren’t needing her so intensely, she might be glad she kept one foot in corporate America. Would she agree to table trying for a baby until the twins start school and you’re more stable with alternate child care? Can you frame potential changes as a trial period you’ll re-evaluate after X months? You might talk through what it takes to get a new job. I’m hoping you and your spouse find a resolution even before you find a couple’s therapist. But at the end of the day, you and she will have to make a joint decision about whether you’ll bring another bundle of love into the world. If you both lead with empathy and love, a boatload of grace, and a willingness to get creative, you’ll come out alright, together. Rooting for you!

I have a junior in high school (and a sophomore) and we are starting the college-choosing journey. Our small family of four makes about $120,000 a year but we live in a high-cost area. We are close to living paycheck-to-paycheck. As college conversations go, I know about applying for FAFSA, Pell grants, etc. but I worry that our income is high enough that my child will not qualify for much financial support. Federal programs don’t take into account the cost of living, so on paper, we look good. I hate the idea of her having to get loans when we see now how predatory they really are. I didn’t go to college as I am a first-generation high school graduate and neither my parents nor the inept high school college counselor were able to help me figure out how to apply and pay for it, so I went right into the workforce. I also didn’t have the financial bandwidth to start a savings account as a single mom of two for so long. Only in the last few years have I been making enough money to loosen the purse strings a bit. I want to start planning. How can I determine what I can “afford” to spend to send my child to college?

—College Rich but Money Poor

Dear College Rich but Money Poor,

Navigating the college financial aid system is no small feat, especially for someone who’s never done it. Your kids are lucky to have your thoughtful guidance, even if you feel like you’re figuring it out as you go. The answer to how much you can spend is simple: Take a look at how much you have left at the end of the month, after you’ve paid your bills and put money away for your retirement. If you have $500 per month, then you can spend $6,000 a year on your child’s tuition. If you don’t have anything left, it will be a lot tougher to contribute. Look at places where you can tighten your belt: Maybe you can squeeze an extra $250 or $300 per month out of your paycheck. Just don’t think you’re going to give up your 401(k) or Roth IRA contribution to build up your college fund. As I’ve often said, you can borrow for college but no one will give you a dime for retirement. Consider not just your current budget, but potential future adjustments. Could you free up more cash by downsizing or relocating once both kids are out of the house? Are you able to take on a side gig or extra hours for a few years? Think creatively about short-term sacrifices that could make a meaningful dent.

Still, how much you think you can afford might be different than what a college thinks you can afford, although an increasing number of colleges and universities are providing free tuition, room and board if your income is less than a certain amount and your assets as “typical,” whatever that means.

So, let’s talk about affordability. The U.S. government offers a website where you can estimate your college cost for each college or university. In addition, the Department of Education requires each school to provide a Net Price Calculator , which shows you the amount your student will pay to attend an institution in a single academic year, after subtracting scholarships and grants. Each calculator will take about 10 to 20 minutes to fill out. Make sure you have your most recent federal tax returns, W-2 forms, and any statements of assets, like checking and savings accounts and 401(k) or IRAs. You’ll be expected to make a family contribution, based on your adjusted gross income (AGI). In the 2024-2025 school year, this will be called the Student Aid Index (SAI), which will appear on your FAFSA summary. Here’s a link to the Department of Education’s paper on Expected Family Contribution.

You’re spot on that FAFSA and federal aid don’t account for cost of living. But many colleges offer their own need-based grants and scholarships that do factor in local expenses. As your daughter narrows her college list, research each school’s specific aid offerings and policies. Some may surprise you with their generosity. A friend of mine is in a similar financial situation as you, with a slightly lower income than yours and a home that has substantially grown in value over the past 15 years. Her daughter’s school of choice carries a list price of $85,000 per year for room, board, tuition, and fees, but after taking into account their income and assets, the college reduced that to less than $30,000 per year. Her daughter will also get a job on campus to help defray some of those costs, and a small loan. My friend will pick up the rest, minus whatever her daughter earns at her summer job.

You also don’t have to rely on a college’s generosity. Encourage your daughter to look at a range of schools, including lower-cost options like in-state public universities or colleges with strong merit aid programs. She can also look at getting the requirements out of the way at a local community college, then transferring to a state university to finish up and collect her degree. That would cut the cost of her degree in half, or less. When it comes to scholarships, good resources include the scholarships page at StudentAid.gov and FastWeb.com , among others. Oftentimes, no one applies for local merit awards. Every little bit helps chip away at that total cost.

Loans aren’t ideal, but they don’t have to be completely off the table either. Focus on federal loans first, which have more flexible repayment options than private ones. And make sure your daughter understands the short-term, long-term, and unintended consequences of any debt she takes on. Kids have a hard time imagining how tough it might be to pay $500 per month in student loan debt while making ends meet at their first job. The Hidden-Pregnancy Experiment

Shortly after I became pregnant with my second child, in the fall of 2022, I decided to try a modest experiment. I wanted to see whether I could hide my pregnancy from my phone. After spending my twenties eagerly surveilling and sharing the details of my life online, I had already begun trying to erect some walls of technological privacy: I’d deleted most apps on my phone and turned off camera, location, and microphone access for nearly all of the ones that I did have; I had disabled Siri—I just found it annoying—and I didn’t have any smart devices. For the experiment, I would abide by some additional restrictions. I wouldn’t Google anything about pregnancy nor shop for baby stuff either online or using a credit card, and neither would my husband, because our I.P. addresses—and thus the vast, matrixed fatbergs of personal data assembled by unseen corporations to pinpoint our consumer and political identities—were linked. I wouldn’t look at pregnancy accounts on Instagram or pregnancy forums on Reddit. I wouldn’t update my period tracker or use a pregnancy app.

Nearly every time we load new content on an app or a Web site, ad-exchange companies—Google being the largest among them—broadcast data about our interests, finances, and vulnerabilities to determine exactly what we’ll see; more than a billion of these transactions take place in the U.S. every hour. Each of us, the data-privacy expert Wolfie Christl told me, has “dozens or even hundreds” of digital identifiers attached to our person; there’s an estimated eighteen-billion-dollar industry for location data alone. In August, 2022, Mozilla reviewed twenty pregnancy and period-tracking apps and found that fifteen of them made a “buffet” of personal data available to third parties, including addresses, I.P. numbers, sexual histories, and medical details. In most cases, the apps used vague language about when and how this data could be shared with law enforcement. (A 2020 FOIA lawsuit filed by the A.C.L.U. revealed that the Department of Homeland Security had purchased access to location data for millions of people in order to track them without a warrant. ICE and C.B.P. subsequently said they would stop using such data.) The scholar Shoshana Zuboff has called this surveillance capitalism , “a new economic order that claims human experience as free raw material for hidden commercial practices of extraction, prediction, and sales.” Through our phones, we are under perpetual surveillance by companies that buy and sell data about what kind of person we are, whom we might vote for, what we might purchase, and what we might be nudged into doing.

A decade ago, the sociology professor Janet Vertesi conducted a more rigorous form of the hidden-pregnancy experiment. Using an elaborate system of code words and the anonymous browser Tor, she managed to digitally hide her pregnancy all the way up to the birth of her child. In an article about the experience, for Time , she pointed to a Financial Times report, which found that identifying a single pregnant woman is as valuable to data brokers as knowing the age, gender, and location of more than two hundred nonpregnant people, because of how much stuff new parents tend to buy. She also noted that simply attempting to evade market detection—by, for example, purchasing stacks of gift cards in order to buy a stroller—made her and her husband look as though they were trying to commit fraud.

I wasn’t going to do anything so strict or elaborate. I’d allow myself to text and send e-mails about my pregnancy, and to talk about it with my phone nearby. I assumed that, eventually, it would notice; I’d just wait and see when a diaper ad popped up on Instagram. I liked the idea of establishing a buffer zone between my psyche and the object that most closely monitors it. I found it almost shocking to remember that this was possible.

Pregnancy tends to erode both your freedom and your privacy. Past a certain point in your second trimester, strangers will begin reaching toward your stomach and telling you about the real difference between boys and girls. But I had eluded this during my first pregnancy, because COVID hit before I started showing. In the months that followed, I began to feel the difference between witnessing something and surveilling it, and to recognize that the most pleasurable moments in my life had occurred out of the reach of any oversight. I had felt then an almost psychedelic sense of autonomy; time was dilating, and the slow bloom inside me was beyond anyone’s reach. I wanted to see if I could feel anything like that again.

During pregnancy, and in the early days of parenthood, one is both the object and the conductor of intense surveillance. Last year, the artist and filmmaker Sophie Hamacher co-edited an anthology of writing on the subject, called “ Supervision ,” which was published by M.I.T. Press. “As I became absorbed with tracking and monitoring my child,” Hamacher writes in the preface, “I was increasingly aware that I was a subject of tracking and monitoring by others: advertisers, medical professionals, government entities, people on the street. I began to wonder about the relationship between the way I watched her and the ways we were being watched.” Surveillance encompasses both policing and caretaking, Hamacher notes. In practice, its polarized qualities—“beneficial and harmful, intimate and distanced”—intertwine. Baby monitors use technology developed for the military. Many contemporary models run on CCTV.

Most American households with young children use baby monitors or trackers; two recent surveys put market penetration at seventy-five and eighty-three per cent, respectively. (Both surveys were conducted by companies that make these devices.) And there are now countless other ways that technology will help you to observe and scrutinize your child: nanny-cam Teddy bears, G.P.S. stroller accessories, scales that track your baby’s weight over time, disks that can be affixed to diapers and which will notify you if your baby rolls onto his stomach while he’s asleep. Increasingly, such products use A.I. to detect signs of distress. “The need to know whether a child is safe and well is perfectly natural, which makes the nature of such surveillance appear innocent,” the writer and scholar Hannah Zeavin notes in “Family Scanning,” one of the essays in “Supervision.” But, she adds, “these technologies conceal the possibility of false positives, disrupted emergency services, and of collaboration with state forces—wittingly or unwittingly—all in the name of keeping children safe.” As a general rule, these devices don’t lead to better outcomes for the babies they monitor. More often—like social media, which promises connection as a salve for the loneliness created by social media—parenting tech exacerbates, even calls into existence, the parental anxieties that it pledges to soothe.

This has become a common pattern in contemporary life. Nearly a fifth of U.S. households are estimated to use doorbell cameras, many of them from Ring, the Amazon-owned company that has expanded its reach through police partnerships and a dedicated app that encourages users to post footage of strangers. Ring cameras haven’t made neighborhoods measurably safer, but they have made users measurably more paranoid, and placed more people, sometimes with grave outcomes, in contact with the police. Until recently, police could readily access surveillance footage from the Ring network without a warrant by posting requests on the app. It also gave its own employees and third-party contractors “ ‘ free range ’ access” to view and download videos from users’ homes.

In 2015, the company Owlet started selling a two-hundred-and-fifty-dollar Smart Sock, which monitored babies’ heart rates and oxygen levels, and alerted parents if these figures were abnormal. Although the company insists that it has made clear that the product is not intended to “treat or diagnose” sudden infant death syndrome—and there is no evidence that it reduces the risk of SIDS occurring—such devices are sometimes referred to as “ SIDS monitors.” But, in 2017, an opinion piece in the Journal of the American Medical Association cautioned physicians against recommending the product. “There are no medical indications for monitoring healthy infants at home,” the authors wrote. The device, they noted, could “stimulate unnecessary fear, uncertainty, and self-doubt in parents about their abilities to keep their infants safe.” The following year, a study in the same journal found “concerning” inaccuracies in oxygen readings. When Owlet went public, in February, 2021, the company had a valuation of more than a billion dollars; later that year, the F.D.A. issued a warning letter that the Smart Sock wasn’t an authorized medical device, and the company pulled it off the market. A million units had already been sold. The following year, Owlet launched a new version, called the Dream Sock, which would receive F.D.A. approval. Most of the reviews for the Dream Sock exude profound gratitude. Parents write about the peace of mind that comes from knowing the baby is being constantly monitored, about not knowing what they would do if the device didn’t exist.

Surveillance capitalism, Zuboff writes, “aims to impose a new collective order based on total certainty.” But little is certain when it comes to babies. The control that we feel when we’re engaged in surveillance almost always proves illusory, though the control, or at least the influence, that others exert on us through surveillance is real.

It is not a coincidence that Roe v. Wade, a ruling grounded in the right to privacy, was overturned at a time when privacy in the U.S was on its conceptual deathbed. There are other legal principles that might have served as a stronger foundation for abortion rights: the right to equal protection, or the right to bodily integrity. As Christyne Neff wrote, in 1991, the physical effects of an ordinary pregnancy and delivery resemble those of a severe beating—flesh lacerated, organs rearranged, half a quart of blood lost. Can the state, she asked, rightfully compel a person to undergo this?

Since Roe fell, two years ago, fourteen states have claimed that power in absolute terms, banning abortion almost completely. Two states have successfully passed abortion-vigilante laws, which confer the power of carceral supervision on the public. Indiana’s attorney general has argued that abortion records should be publicly available, like death records; Kansas recently passed a law that would require abortion providers to collect details about the personal lives of their patients and make that information available to the government. Birth control and sex itself may be up next for criminal surveillance: the Heritage Foundation , last year, insisted, on Twitter, that “conservatives have to lead the way in restoring sex to its true purpose, & ending recreational sex & senseless use of birth control pills.”

For many women in America, pregnancy was a conduit to state surveillance long before the end of Roe. Poor women, especially poor nonwhite women, are often drug-tested during pregnancy, and sometimes during labor and delivery, without their informed consent. Women who take drugs during pregnancy have been charged with child abuse or neglect, including in cases in which the drugs were legal; women who have miscarried after taking drugs have been charged with manslaughter, even homicide, even when no causal link was proved. Sometimes this happens because the woman in question had responded to billboards and service announcements promising to help pregnant people who are struggling with substance use. In multiple states, women have been taken into custody when the safety of the fetus was called into question. “To be pregnant and poor in the United States is to play a game of roulette with one’s privacy, presumed confidential relationship with medical providers, and basic constitutional and medical rights,” the law professor Michele Goodwin writes in “ Policing the Womb ,” from 2020.

Goodwin describes the case of a woman in Iowa named Christine Taylor, who, in 2010, as a twenty-two-year-old mother of two, was accused of attempted feticide after she fell down the stairs while pregnant. Part of the evidence cited by the police was that she reportedly told a nurse that she hadn’t wanted the baby. (Ultimately, prosecutors decided not to press charges.) The carceral surveillance of pregnancy entails the criminalization of ambivalence, the inspection of these innermost desires. But the deepest truths about motherhood seem to me to be rooted in conflicting, coexisting emotions: nightmare and rapture in the same moment during labor, the love and despair that box each other at night in the weeks that follow, the joy of cuddling my nine-month-old undergirded by the horror of knowing that other babies are starving and dying in rubble. Before I had my first child, I had badly wanted to get pregnant. I had planned for it, prepared for it, hoped for it. Still, when I saw the positive test result, I cried.

My modest experiment went surprisingly smoothly. Because I’d had my first child not long before, this time I didn’t need to buy anything, and I didn’t want to learn anything. I smooth-brained my way to three months, four months, five; no diaper ads. I called up a lawyer and data-privacy specialist named Dominique Shelton Leipzig to get her perspective. Globally, she told me, we generate 2.5 quintillion bytes—that’s eighteen zeroes—of data per day. “The short answer is, you probably haven’t hidden what you think you have,” she said. I told her about the rules I’d set for myself, that I didn’t have many apps and had bought nothing but prenatal vitamins, and that Instagram did not appear to have identified me as pregnant. She paused. “I’m amazed,” she told me. “If you didn’t see any ads, I think you might have succeeded.” I congratulated myself by instantly dropping the experiment and buying maternity pants; ads for baby carriers popped up on my Instagram within minutes.

I had felt little satisfaction hiding from the ad trackers—if anything, I’d only become more conscious of how much surveillance I was engaged in, as both subject and object, and how much more insidious the problem was becoming. We rarely have a clear understanding of what we’re doing when we engage in surveillance of ourselves or others. Life360, an app that’s used by more than sixty million people and is marketed as an easy way to track your child’s location via their smartphone, was found in 2021 to be selling raw location information to data brokers. (The company said it now sells only aggregate data.) In a Pew survey from 2023, seventy-seven per cent of Americans said they had very little to no trust in how social-media executives handle user data, and seventy-one per cent were concerned about how the government uses it. In another survey, ninety-three per cent of Americans said they wouldn’t buy a doorbell camera if it sold data about their family. People just want to be safer. I had wanted security, too, and affirmation—and I had wanted to be a writer. I had disclosed so much of my life to people I’ll never know.

My husband and I had not bought a baby monitor for our first child, a choice that satisfied his desire to not buy things and my desire to insist that certain aspects of experience are fundamentally ungovernable. But shortly after the second child was born she developed eczema, and started scratching her sweet, enormous cheeks in her sleep. One morning, my husband went to her and found that she’d clawed her face open, leaving blood smudged all over her sleep sack and smeared all over her face. “We need a video monitor!” I wailed, already Googling options. “We need to buy a video monitor today.”

We didn’t buy one, but for weeks I regretted it and second-guessed myself. And I surveilled the baby with technology in other ways all the time. In the early weeks, I relied on an app to tell me how much milk she’d drunk and how many soiled diapers she’d had that day—activities that I myself had witnessed just hours before. I felt like a Biblical angel with a thousand eyes, somehow unable to see anything. I took pictures because I knew I would have no memory of the precise contours of this exact baby in a month. When she didn’t seem hungry enough, I panicked, obsessing over every feed.

“What’s the line between pathological self-surveillance and care for a newborn? Is there one?” Sarah Blackwood, an English professor at Pace University, asks, in “Supervision.” Blackwood contrasts the “fantasy of efficiency and sterility” built into parenting tech with the “psychic state of watchfulness so many mothers find themselves in”—a state that is “metastatic, fecund, beyond.” One afternoon, my husband took the baby from me: she was sobbing, and I was incoherently frantic, trying to get her to eat. She was O.K., he told me; she’d eat when she needed to. But I know what’s good for her, and it’s my job to make her do it, I thought, furious. Around the fringes of my consciousness, I felt a flicker of understanding about how this idea that everything was controllable had become so ubiquitous, how we had confused coercion with care. ♦

I wasn’t particularly close with my brothers when we were young, but grew to have great relationships with them now that we’re older.

My brother’s wife has recently been diagnosed with cancer and the outlook is not good.

I have never been close to either of my sisters-in-law, and now feel quite awkward around her and at a loss for words.

I think about her and my brother a lot and want to be a comforting presence and do something for her, but I am at a loss.

I’ve made meals and things like that, but I don’t know what else to do.
