Speeches are an essential component of every professional or formal event. A welcome speech is a type of speech given by a speaker or the function's host to greet the distinguished Chief Guest and the other guests and express gratitude for their presence. It helps to glorify the occasion.

Everybody expects an introductory speech for an event. And that is because the opening speech sets the tone for the entire event. One can easily attract the attention of the audience with a catchy first line and introduction. So it is very important to make a good first impression.

To make guests feel welcomed, you'll need a powerful speech. Here are some examples of speeches that you might use to impress your guests. These speeches are categorised under several headings. Any of these can be used for your forthcoming events.

Let’s go Through Some Long and Short Speeches

Long speech  .

This form of opening speech for an event is extremely important if one intends to take time and welcome and extend gratitude to everyone involved in making the event successful.

Good Morning everyone! A very warm welcome to the respected teachers and the incredible parents. I am so grateful to welcome our students to the commencement ceremony (mention the name of the event). I feel privileged to open this event and stand here, where many accomplished people who I admired and looked up to once stood.

A very special welcome to our Chief guest (mention their name). They truly set a benchmark for multi-hyphenated achievements. They are an entrepreneur, coach and author of the best selling books in our country and even abroad. Their quiet charitable endeavours at such a young age speak volumes of the person they are and the upbringing they had. Thank you for accepting our invitation to address our students who are about to start another new chapter in their lives.

I express my gratitude to our esteemed Principal (mention name) for their approval. They have assisted us in not just our development but also in enhancing our creativity and knowledge. And last but not the least, a heartfelt thanks to our esteemed lecturers, without whom we would be incomplete as students. They were always here to assist and advise us in unimaginable ways. They helped us with the development of ideas and the execution of those ideas.

Our Principal, professors, other associates, and the administration department have all supported us. I also can't help but admire my team's tenacious attitude, which went above and beyond to guarantee in successfully organising and completing the event. We all also owe a special appreciation to our sponsors without whom the yearly celebration would be incomplete.

We are all gathered here to mark the end of a year and receive our much-deserved appreciation and certificates. A semester has passed, and another year has come to an end. I am certain that you are all feeling anxious and giddy with excitement at the same time. This is the final official ceremony that we will ever attend in our prestigious school/college (mention the name). The ceremony will last until (mention time), after which our guests will give a message to the students. Our students will also have the opportunity to ask questions and converse with our speaker during a question-and-answer session. Tea and snacks will be offered at the end. Please stay until the end of the session to show your support for our participants.

Our Honourable Principal will address the gathering tonight. I'm confident that their speech will not just be a collection of words but a strong motivational speech.

For all of the freshmen attending the college this year, I would like to inform you that our college toasts its annual celebration with great excitement and festivities every year, creating amazing memories. Of course, preparing for this big day takes a lot of time and effort because it cannot be achieved overnight. It requires meticulous scrutiny of every element, as even the tiniest oversight might derail the entire endeavour. So please give a huge round of applause to all the organisers!

Let us applaud the efforts of all the contestants who have worked hard in order to shine in their performance. We were quite lucky in having the support of all parties, not just for the participants, but also for the backstage crew.

For today's celebration, a variety of performances have been scheduled. We have Dance performances, singing, and playing instruments, and a variety of other activities like quizzes and other competitions. So everyone! Get ready for some incredible performances from our students, and trust me when I say that you will not be able to take your gaze away from them.

After completing the first round of performances, there will be an awards event recognising the talents and efforts of our college students who competed at various zonal, state, and national level events.

There are no free lunches in the world. Just because you studied here doesn’t mean you are entitled to all the opportunities. You must remember to work hard and earn every opportunity you want. Take every challenge you face as an opportunity for another chance to prove your worth. Also, know the difference between people to whom you have to prove yourself and those you don’t have to. Always remember to have a sense of humour in life. Only that will get you through the tough times. Life is truly special and with patience and hard work, you will certainly make responsible decisions for yourself, your family and for your country as well.  Take accountability for your failures and learn from them. Don’t let anything bring you down. Stay as passionate and driven as you are today. Keep achieving and reach great heights with flying colours.

That is all from me, friends! I thank you all for your patience. I'll meet you after the event. I hope you relax and enjoy the evening.

Short Speech

This form of welcome speech for an event is helpful when the presenter wishes to keep it simple, short and effective without diverting focus from the main event.

Good Morning everyone! A warm welcome to respected teachers, parents and students. A special thanks to the Chief Guest of the day (mention his/her name). It's an honour to have such an accomplished author and entrepreneur among us. Thank you (sir/ ma’am/ mx) for accepting the invitation to deliver the keynote speech today and for guiding our students for new beginnings.

Your teachers have guided you in all your endeavours and your parents have constantly supported you through it. This would not be the same without them. I extend my sincere thanks to all the teachers and parents for their understanding and support.

This is a highly multi-talented batch of students in our school. Aside from academics, we value advancement in the arts, cultural activities, and sports. One of the best aspects of our college is that it places equal emphasis on all areas to develop the overall talents and personalities of the students. I stand here, feeling lucky to be a part of your life, even if it is only in a small way. This school is so proud of all you have accomplished and every achievement you have garnered for yourself.   You all have been excellent performers in academics and won so many olympiads and awards. And you didn’t hold back even in extracurricular activities like sports tournaments like martial arts, football, basketball and badminton. Our school has also been a top performer in inter-school events like dancing, singing, speech, elocution and debate. The book club that you have started which is now thriving also shows your innovative side.

Our students have put their best foot forward to make this college function a success. Preparations have been underway since last month. Let us all take a moment to appreciate them.

Let me provide the schedule for today's function before we get started. To begin with, we have our principal inviting our honoured guests. We then have a speech, followed by the pupils' performances. At last, our honoured visitors take the stage and relate their experiences. Our distinguished keynote guest will then present medals to the students.

Finally, I'd like to wish everyone a good time at the celebration and I wish you all to take some lovely and happy memories with you. I now invite our Principal Shri (Name of your Principal) to speak a few words.

These are samples for a college event. To extend an understanding, let us go through a general guide for writing a speech.

Address the audience - "Good evening to everyone present here!" is an appropriate greeting. Then, using a sentence like "It is my pleasure to invite everyone to our magnificent venue tonight," welcomes the audience to the event. Keep the tone in check. If it's a special occasion, use a more solemn tone.

Welcome the guests - "A warm welcome to all the esteemed guests present here today!" is a simple and clear greeting to use. Use a sentence like "It's so nice to see you all here on this beautiful day" to make them feel welcome. More informal language may be suitable for an occasion with close friends and relatives. Include a few jokes in your speech to lighten it up.

Information about the event - Give a brief description of the event's name and purpose. If it's important, provide the event's name and age, and a little about the organisation that put it on.

Thank the helpers/aiders - Mention at least two people who assisted in making the event a reality. Mention their names as well as the roles they played.

Engage the audience - Mention any particularly noteworthy aspects of the incident. If applicable, introduce what's coming up later in the event or the future days. Pick the most significant elements and encourage people to stick around for or pay special attention to them.

Ending the speech - If appropriate, express your hope that the audience appreciates the event. Send your warmest greetings to them for the remainder of the event.

Duration   - Keep your discourse to a reasonable length. The event will determine the duration. A shorter speech is usually better because most people just want to get on with the event. Smaller events should last no more than 1-2 minutes, whereas larger and more formal events, such as conferences, should last no more than 5 minutes.

Welcome Speech in English: Best Samples, Examples & Tips

Why are welcome speeches necessary.

Most of the gatherings and ceremonies are held with a purpose. They are either planned events or spontaneous gatherings. In both cases, it is important to know how to organize such events. We must prepare ourselves to conduct the event properly.

Let us imagine that you are hosting a gathering. You have prepared everything, including food, drinks, decorations, etc., and even set up the stage. However, you forgot one thing – a welcome speech. What happens next? Do you start talking immediately without waiting for everyone to arrive? Of course not!

The same goes for a meeting. How many times did you attend meetings where people didn’t introduce themselves? Or worse, they talked about themselves too much during the meeting. In addition, some speakers talk directly to the audience without introducing themselves. This makes it difficult for the attendees to comprehend the event’s process and connect with its objectives.

So why is a welcome speech in English needed? To begin with, it is necessary to give a brief overview of the topic. Secondly, it helps to provide information about the organization and its history. Thirdly, it allows us to highlight our achievements. And finally, it creates a good impression on guests. Otherwise, they might ask questions like “Where is this event going?”.

Significance of welcome speech

The significance of the welcome speech won’t be apparent without understanding what makes up the history of an event. An event can be defined as a sequence of activities carried out over a period of time. These activities are usually organized into stages, each with a specific purpose. For example, an event may start with opening remarks, followed by a keynote address, and finally concluded with closing remarks. Each stage of an event has a different set of responsibilities.

In the case of a welcoming ceremony, the welcome speech is considered to be one of the most important parts of the whole gathering. In fact, it is the most crucial aspect of the entire event. This is because the welcome speech serves several purposes.

First, it introduces the guests to the host. Second, it provides information regarding the upcoming program. Third, it creates a positive impression among the attendees. Fourth, it helps in creating a sense of unity among the participants. Fifth, it helps in establishing good relations between the hosts and the guests. And finally, it ensures that the guest feels comfortable during the occasion.

Objectives of a Welcome Speech in English

The objective of a welcome speech in English is to introduce yourself and the rest of the attendees at the event. This is done through a short introduction about who you are, what you do, why you’re attending, etc. The following are the objectives of a welcome speech:

  • Introduce yourself
  • Provide Information regarding the event
  • Create a positive impression among attendees
  • Establish good relations between hosts and guests
  • Ensure guests feel comfortable during the event
  • Help build unity among participants
  • Explain the purpose of the meeting/event
  • Set up the agenda for the meeting/event
  • Make introductions
  • Give background info about the organization
  • Highlight achievements (if any)

Welcome Address in English For Students

It’s natural for attendees of any event to expect an introductory speech, which sets the tone for the occasion. A host can easily command attention with an effective welcome. Even the longest speeches have the capacity to hold an audience’s interest when delivered in a catchy and impressive manner.

A short opening speech for a commencement ceremony

To everyone present, good morning. A very warm welcome to our respected faculty, our remarkable parents, and our dear students. Special recognition is due for our Chief Guest (name of chief guest). It’s a true honor to have such a successful alumnus (or state the chief guest’s job title). We express our biggest gratitude for accepting our invitation to deliver today’s keynote speech.

I’m standing here as a lucky witness to our dear students’ academic journey. Our school is very proud of everything you have accomplished and your small but not minor contributions to society. You’ve brought prestige to our name and deserve the title of one of our school’s most successful and dedicated batch of students.

With your teachers’ guidance and parents’ support, you’ve reached remarkable heights. I’d like to take this time to extend my gratitude to our faculty and our parents, for understanding, encouraging, and nurturing our students.

Graduates, you are about to start another chapter in your life. An exciting yet scary period. From now on, you will face more challenges, but I am confident that you’re adequately equipped to face any tribulation that comes your way. Remember that with conviction and self-belief, no mountain is too high to climb. The laurels you’ve brought back to our school are only the beginning. I am genuinely excited to see the astonishing feats that your futures hold.

A long opening speech for a commencement ceremony

Good morning everyone! I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our esteemed faculty, astounding parents, and our dear students. I’m honored to open our commencement ceremony and stand here where many of our accomplished alumni who I look up to once stood.

I extend a particularly warm welcome to our Chief Guest (name of chief guest), who as one of our outstanding alumni, has really set the standard for exemplary accomplishments.

(enumerate key achievements of chief guest)

Her/his professional and philanthropic endeavors attest to their upbringing and the values she/he lives by. We want to thank you for responding positively to our invitation to be the keynote speaker on today’s auspicious occasion.

As another academic year reaches its end, I’m sure that our dear students are anxious and also filled with hope and excitement. This is their final school event in our renowned school/college/university (name of school). But hopefully, it won’t be their last awarding ceremony.

We are extremely fortunate to have such a talented and passionate group of graduates who have earned laurels in honor of our school, adding to its distinction and great reputation. The amazing encouragement and unconditional support of our parents throughout the school year have been extraordinary. They have stood by their children in every school event. Our teachers and staff are truly thankful for the trust you’ve given us. Your children’s journey wouldn’t have been a huge success without your guidance and nurture.

It’s been a remarkable experience to witness the passion and commitment our students have exhibited in all their undertakings. I am filled with certitude that you will achieve whatever goal you’ve set your mind on. Adulthood is going to be jammed with more trials you’ve never imagined before. I am kidding. Maybe. Joking aside, you will win as long as you work hard and believe in yourself.

Remember that you are valuable and take every challenge you face as an opportunity to prove your worth and get better. Also, surround yourselves with people who are good for your well-being and treat them the way you’d like to be treated.

Maintain your sense of humor because not much else will get you through when the going gets rough. Life can be very special and you can truly make a mark, which doesn’t always need to have global proportions. Be accountable for your mistakes and learn from them. Keep nurturing your passions and remain as driven, bright, and astonishing as you are today. You are all wonderful and I can’t wait to see your future accomplishments, because they will be great.

Thank you and do us proud!

Sample of Welcome Speech for a Goodbye Get-together

Good evening everyone!

Welcome to my farewell party. I know, I know. You all said you’re sorry to see me go, but that you all would need food and entertainment first to deal with your sadness. So here we are. I shall deliver.

As the Semisonic song goes “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” And so it is with great gratitude that the VP in Japan decided to retire early, so the end of his role can mark the beginning of mine. To Toni Takitani, thanks for deciding you’ve had enough!

Kidding aside, I’d like to thank my friends who made this very corporate event a huge success. Look at this, my goodness!

Most importantly, I want to impart my profound gratitude to my boss (name of the boss). Without you, this party won’t have a band. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor. Or I could, but none of them would have changed my life as positively as you have. It saddens me to leave you the most, but it comforts me that you were my biggest source of encouragement to go. Or it may have been your plan all along. Genius!

So to everyone who came, thank you. I’ll have time to thank you properly later, but for now, let’s eat!

Good morning to everyone who came out to join us here today. My name is Julius Kaizer and I’ll be hosting today’s events.

Before anything else, I’d like to take this moment to thank Merville & Posque Inc., their CEO Mr. Hyori Asano and his team for putting this event together in record time. It won’t be possible without your tireless dedication and contributions. I also want to thank everyone who came, our remarkable associates from Osaka, Chiang Rai, and Quezon, our wonderful clients who have stuck with us through thick and thin, and our amazing consultants in various fields of energy conservation. Your interest and patronage are very much appreciated.

A great welcome to all our extraordinary employees and staff members, some of whom have worked and grown along our company’s 23-year history. A big welcome, too, to our interns who have recently joined and brightened our corporate offices.

Today marks the 15th annual MPBC and it’s an honor to be a host in this glorious congress. I myself will be staying for the conference’s entirety to learn what I can about sustainable energy systems and their various implications and impact on the future of our planet.

The activities today will include an overview of all the forums, seminars, and exhibits around the MPBC complex. Second, we will have the inauguration of the new bio-dome on the grounds where we will also honor this year’s retirees. The afternoon’s seminars will kick off after lunch, and I encourage you to attend the discussions and learn about our future plans and projects. Finally, I’d like to encourage everyone to help yourselves to the snack stations in the hallway. Refreshments and sandwiches are on us for the duration of the conference.

I won’t keep you long and let’s begin the day. I wish all of you a valuable and wonderful time! Thank you.

Welcome Speech Samples for Family Functions

Huge family events often have speeches: weddings, birthdays, farewell parties, funerals, anniversaries, and so on. Some of these events normally have hosts and esteemed guests. Here are some tips and samples to inspire you.

Tips on Welcoming the Chief Guest?

If you’re searching for tips on how to make a welcome speech for guest, here are some things you can do:

  • When drafting your speech, do the research.
  • Highlight the key qualities that are worth mentioning in an opening welcome speech for event.
  • Take note of the welcome address speech sample in this article and create a framework from them.
  • Look up welcome speech quotes and choose the best one to use somewhere in your speech.
  • Greet the chief guest at the event personally and introduce yourself if you don’t know each other.
  • Extend your hard for a handshake and smile to express that they are honored and welcome to the event.
  • Smile and suggest they are being welcomed.
  • Address them formally with the usual Miss or Mr.
  • Escort the chief guest before you assume host duties.

Welcoming the Chief Guest with a Short Speech

It’s a great honor to welcome our Chief guest and tonight’s keynote speaker. I was worried at first about how to introduce (title and name of Chief guest) because any introduction would pale in comparison to the reality and immensity of her/his accomplishments.

(Enumerate the main accomplishments of the chief guest).

She/he is the ultimate inspiration for young professionals everywhere who want to succeed in the field of international trade. Here to inspire us with her career journey and all the experiences she accumulated along the day, join me in giving a round of applause to (title and name of chief guest).

Welcoming the Chief Guest (Longer Version of the Speech)

Introducing our next attendee is a great pleasure of mine. When she/he accepted our invitation to be tonight’s Chief guest and keynote speaker, I almost jumped for joy. Then I realized I would naturally receive the task of introducing her/him. At first, this gave me great anxiety. How would I be able to pull it off and deliver an introduction that would give her background justice? Then I thought, no introduction would ever compare, so it was foolish to aim for success when failure is guaranteed. So I decided to just do it. Our chief guest has accomplished the following, to name a few:

As I looked at her/his professional and personal successes, I realized here is a woman/man who was faced many times with the certainty of failure but had given her circumstances a grad twist by attaining success against all odds. Then I thought, perhaps I should aim for success in this speech, after all.

She/he is an inspiration to many, not only for all the fields of expertise she has earned and the extreme success that went with the process, but she/he has also set the benchmark for philanthropy and good deeds. She/he has done this quietly, too, and she/he might strangle me for revealing it to the public. I didn’t even know half of the wonderful things she/he has done for our community before my research.

Without further ado, and here to inspire us with her wisdom and grand skill, join me in welcoming our Chief guest (title and name of chief guest).

Welcome Speech for Parents

Hi everyone!

As host and brother of the groom, I’d like to take this time to introduce the parents of the bride. Without them, my brother wouldn’t be the lucky and happy man he is today. More than that, I have witnessed how they accepted my brother and treated him as a son long before the engagement. I often tag along on family trips and have spent hours of wonderful conversations with them. Apart from my own parents, they are two of the most affectionate and hospitable people I’ve ever met. If I could meet a woman whose parents are just like them, I’d consider myself half as lucky as my brother.

Let’s give a round of applause for (names of the bride’s parents). Thank you for embracing my brother into the fold.

Welcome Speech Samples for National Holidays

Below is a sample of a welcome speech typically delivered during Annual Day. Substitute the appropriate details to match your information and use the framework in other speeches reserved for national holidays.

Welcome Speech for Annual Day

I am overjoyed to have this chance to welcome all of you to our elite institution’s 25th Annual Day. Today’s children are the hope of the next generation. All these graduates we see today, receiving awards for their achievements will go on to lead successful lives. Let them live up to the expectations set before them.

I am very happy to be a member of such an elite school where we learned from such great professors who teach us beyond the boundaries of the ordinary classroom. They’re also the minds and hands behind such a big event every year. I’d like to use this chance to organize such a wonderful event this year. It’s also a great pleasure of mine to introduce our Chief Guest.

Welcome speeches are necessary at events. They usually set the tone or expectations of the people who attended or participated in the occasion. There are many ways in going about delivering a welcome address speech. Review the samples in this article and do your due diligence to craft an outline, framework, or skeleton from the contents that you can use in welcome speeches of your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

A good welcome speech has the following qualities: * It is sincere. * It can hold the attention of the audience. * The ideas don’t ramble. * Welcome address quotes are used. One for a short welcome speech, and 2 for a longer one. Never 3, unless the speaker is trying to be funny. * The contents are relevant to the event. * It has an impressive anecdote. * The length doesn’t exceed 5 minutes.

The last segment of this article contains tips on welcoming chief guests, esteemed guests, or guests of honor. The tips contained here can be divided into things to consider while drafting the welcome speech, and things to do at the event itself when meeting the chief guest.

A simple thank you would suffice. Make sure you reiterate your gratitude. Some welcome speeches can end with a line that welcomes the guest of honor.

Depending on the context, a welcome speech doesn’t always need to be impressive. In some situations, a straightforward introduction is all you need. However, in some circumstances like commencement ceremonies, farewell parties, dinners, and some others, the audience is prepared to listen to long speeches. In this case, the speech needs to catch the attention of the attendees and maintain their interest. An impressive welcome speech often has an emotional element. Not just parroting big words to describe a person’s achievements or flatter them. Try to use humor if you’re funny by nature or if you can deliver the punchline well. Use popular quotes in your speech. Tell anecdotes relevant to the attendees. Or reveal an epiphany. These are how you should draft a welcome speech set to impress.

Make sure that it is relevant to the content of your welcome speech or the point you’re making. You can use phrases such as the following: * According to… * As the old saying goes… * There’s a quote that has always stuck with me… * Events like this always remind me of one of my favorite quotes… Try to find quotes that are unique and not cliche. You can find some in the lyrics of contemporary music, or lines and dialogues from books and movies, and so on.

So what’s next?

The Class of 2023, as well as new graduate and professional students, have settled in but many are probably wondering what the next few years holds for them at Duke.

One key element of Orientation Week is, as its name implies, getting students going in the right direction. Part of that is feeling welcomed and at home here on campus. Part is learning how to put your best foot forward, regardless of your backgrounds and previous experiences.

Below is a selection of the many words of welcome delivered this week by faculty, administrators and students alike to various student groups, all designed to help them thrive in their Duke experience.

Class of 2023 Undergraduate Convocation

President Vincent Price

“Here before you at Duke, along that imaginary line that traces the road between East Campus and West, an entire universe of knowledge awaits your exploration. So, brave explorers in the class of 2023, may the next four years take you on a remarkable journey of discovery that begins now. Congratulations, and welcome.”

(For the full speech, click here.)

Christoph Guttentag:

Dean of Admissions Christoph Guttentag

“My staff and I had the pleasure of helping with move-in and it represents some of what we love so much about Duke. The enthusiasm, the warmth, the careful planning and the spontaneous celebrations. And most important, the efforts of so many people coming together simply to help other people who need it. That sense of community is a part of what makes Duke special and now you’re a part of that community too. ...

“Being a real Duke student is about growing and changing and helping each other. We chose you because you showed us you are able and willing and ready. Every one of you has earned your place here. Don’t lose your nerve. It won’t always be easy but it will be great.

“It gives me great pleasure to present to [the deans], to President Price and to our university community the class that will succeed and make us proud in ways that we—and they—can’t even imagine. The spectacular class of 2023.”

Luke Powery, dean of Duke Chapel

“On this new day create something so new that even in a fractured world this class of 2023 would be inducted into the hall of fame of humanity because they knew what meant to learn, live, and love in community.”

DSG President Liv McKinney

“If my plan had worked out as I hoped three years ago, I would have missed out on some of the best and most meaningful moments of my life at Duke.

“The thing about Duke is that if you’re lucky your next four years won’t go to plan at all. … And more likely than not, you’ll fail at something. As a result you’ll grow in ways you never thought possible.

“Class of 2023 I can’t wait to see you define your own successes here. I can’t wait to see how your plans develop into more you ever could have imagined and how you grow as a result of this and how our campus evolves with you now here.

Undergraduate Education

Gary Bennett, Dean of Undergraduate Education

Pratt School of Engineering

Ravi Bellamkonda, Dean of the Pratt School of Engineering

"Congratulations, and welcome to Duke! You are home.  The Duke family is your family, and it’s a tight family.  You will make friends here who will be a part of your life for a long time—and those friendships extend to those who have gone before and those who will come after.

“We will do all we can to ensure your success. In fact, I believe Duke is only successful when all of Duke is rooting for each member of Duke’s family!

"We will do all we can to help you become whoever it is that you want to become--and I have no doubt that we’ll love the world that you will create through your actions and thought.”

Graduate and Professional School Convocation

Jim Coleman, John S. Bradway Professor of the Practice of Law

“Some of you may have a notion that you need to determine while at Duke precisely how your career should unfold, that to be a successful doctor, or engineer, or lawyer, you must perform neurosurgery at major hospitals, or build tall buildings, or lead major law firms.  But nothing could be further from the truth.  The role of Duke’s graduate and professional schools is to prepare you to be an excellent practitioner, whatever path you follow.  You can pursue justice and fairness in the world wherever your path leads.”

Sanford School Graduate School Orientation

Judith Kelley, Dean of Sanford School of Public Policy

“Our incoming graduate students are the future of policy - and the future of our world. In this increasingly complex environment, public policy research and education is more valuable than ever before. Our programs transcend disciplinary boundaries and are vital to the most pressing issues that require policy solutions – inequality, health, environment, human rights, security and more.

“At the Sanford School of Public Policy, our students pursue innovative policy solutions to create positive change in the world. We are proud of them already for their many accomplishments, and we know that their degrees will propel them forward to help our world.”

Valerie Ashby: I want to reassure you that we are ready for your children. We have them. We’ve chosen them. We’re ready for them. There’s nothing that’s going to happen to them that we can’t handle. So you can breathe

Trinity College of Arts & Sciences

Valerie Ashby, Dean of Trinity College of Arts and Sciences, speaking to parents and family members in Page Auditorium

“If you are worried, anxious, concerned, sad, in denial – I want to reassure you that we are ready for your children. We have them. We’ve chosen them. We’re ready for them. So you can breathe.”

“There will be moments that (students) question. Reassure them that they belong here. Tell them things like this: we chose them not because they’re perfect but because they are perfectly imperfect. We chose them because they’re kind and they’re going to help us up our game intellectually and in service to the world.”

“We want them to leave room in their schedules to have relationships. If they don’t take the time to get to know someone different than who they are, they’ve missed the Duke experience.”

Jim Roberts, Fred W. Shaffer Professor of Economics

“You may have heard this metaphor: Getting a liberal arts education is like doing pushups for your brain. It’s also about doing pullups and squats and a whole lot of cardio. And that’s a really good thing. My role is trying to help students understand how much they are capable of – how many pushups they can do. It’s my job to help them understand how far they can go.”

“I design my courses to be really, really challenging. I tell students, ‘it’s OK’…because this is such a safe and risk-free environment to try something hard. The downsides are so minimal compared to the possible upsides. (For instance), the benefits of trying a course outside your major are so much greater than the downside that you may not love it.”

Madeline “Mac” Gagné, junior mathematics major

“If you want to know what your students are thinking, it’s probably some mix of ‘Wow this place is huge. Look at all this food. And I’m not crying, you’re crying.’”

“A lot of what I needed to learn at Duke…was that it’s OK to ask for help. It’s something that is necessary for success.”

School of Medicine Orientation

Dr. Mary Klotman, Dean of the School of Medicine

“People often ask me about my job. I tell them the only thing I am certain about is that everything is always changing.  And nowhere is change more prevalent than in healthcare.”

“In a career that has in the past been more traditional and slow to evolve, change is upon us:

A focus on health rather than medicine; Patient-centered care; Shared decision-making; Technology to improve health (use it wisely); Data science – using determinants of health beyond EMR to improve care; interprofessional care – working as teams as never before; and a focus on value.”

“And while change can be challenging and often can stressful, it offers tremendous opportunity. So, my message to you tonight is simple – although perhaps not simply done. Drive change for good. You have this power, and this can be your generation’s legacy. Embrace it!”

2017 New Student Welcome

Chancellor’s prepared remarks:

Good afternoon! Welcome to UCLA and congratulations!

Every one of you should be very proud. You are part of the most gifted, talented and diverse class in UCLA’s nearly 100-year history.

I’d like to share with you some stats about how truly remarkable you are:

First, with 102,000 freshman applicants and 22,000 transfer applicants, you were accepted to the most-applied-to school in the nation!

Of our 9,200 enrolled students, 7,000 are from California.

You also represent all U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and 93 other countries.

About one third are, like me, the first generation in their families to attend college. o And some of you have served in our military, or grown up in foster care, or are parents yourselves.

The diversity and perspectives you bring have made UCLA what we are: a top public university and one of the very best in the world.

UCLA is lucky to have you.

You now join a campus that’s been home to Olympians, Nobel laureates and Oscar winners.

This is a place where presidents debate, superstars perform, athletes break records and scientists save lives, where more than 40 languages are spoken on any given day and where we get to call the extraordinary, multicultural city of Los Angeles our home.

There are opportunities and benefits everywhere you look. Take advantage of all that UCLA and L.A. have to offer.

Much of the college experience lies outside of the classroom. Your social interactions, relationships and community activities may be just as important as your studies.

We have more than 1,000 clubs and student organizations — so no matter what your interests, chances are, there’s a place for you. And if there isn’t, you can create one! Be bold. Be imaginative.

When you traverse Bruin Walk over the next few weeks, you’ll see groups of all kinds asking you to join and trying to inspire your passion.

That passion is a big part of what makes our community exciting. But for a community to thrive, passion must walk hand in hand with compassion.

At UCLA we value free speech as a core principle, but with it we value mutual respect, we value facts and we value the principles and all the people who have made this country, this city and this campus so fantastic.

I’d like to give a quick shout-out to all of the DREAMers — I know many of you are worried, but I’m here to tell you: We care for you deeply and we are PROUD to have you here. So let there be no doubt when I tell you: We are here for you.

As Bruins, I ask that all of you aspire to create a community that will help each of you grow and achieve all that you want while you’re here. It will not be a community where everyone agrees. And that’s OK.

But like any community, UCLA will suffer if we are unfair, if we give in to anger and meanness. And UCLA will thrive when we commit ourselves to goodwill, kindness, understanding and curiosity.

I know we were all deeply troubled this summer, by the events in Charlottesville — a place Carol and I called home for 29 years and where we raised our family.

The hatred, racism and anti-Semitism America witnessed reminds us all that intolerance and racism are continuing issues in our society. As Bruins, please strive for fairness and respectfulness in our community. You will surely encounter people on this campus with whom you strongly disagree, whether they are your fellow students, or teachers or invited speakers.

At those times, we must remember that protecting our freedom of speech and thought, means protecting others’ freedom of speech and thought. That can be uncomfortable at times, indeed frustrating at times, but remember: sometimes being uncomfortable is part of learning.

I ask that you engage over critical issues, even controversial ones, with integrity and respect. There will be several formal opportunities throughout the year to participate in discussions of important issues facing our campus and beyond.

Over the week of Oct. 16, our Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Jerry Kang, will host a series of events centered on Free Speech. I encourage you to participate.

This year’s Common Book is another opportunity. Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do is an illustrated memoir about immigration and identity in America. The Common Book is an opportunity to share and understand diverse perspectives with your peers, and to explore our roles in creating a just society.

You are destined to be our next leaders, whether it’s by conquering climate change, or erasing income inequality or curing diseases. We want you to become leaders who succeed by examining facts, who understand complexity and who work to bridge differences.

I also want to mention another challenge that needs commitment from each and every one of you — that is ending sexual violence. At UCLA, there is zero — zero — tolerance for sexual violence. Sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking are crimes against the dignity and safety of an individual, and they are totally against the values of our community. They will be treated as such. UCLA is a community built on dignity, respect and empathy. In this community, even one incident of sexual assault is too many.

I urge you to learn the Student Code of Conduct and the University of California’s Policy on Sexual Violence. o Understand what “consent” means. Know your own boundaries and respect the boundaries of others. And if you are a survivor of sexual violence or misconduct, please report it immediately to authorities on or off campus.

UCLA has many resources to assist you, no matter what concerns or problems you might have. For example, we just announced free mental health screening and treatment for all of our incoming students — a service we will soon expand to the entire campus community. So reach out to a resident assistant or anyone in Residential Life if you have concerns about anything. They are here to support you and we’ve given them the tools to do that. My administration, and our staff and faculty, are also here to support you in all of your endeavors. We want to help you make these years among the best of your lives!

Finally, remember that being a Bruin means being committed to the community beyond our campus. That’s why we’re looking forward to Volunteer Day on October 7. It’s a great way to contribute to our city, a fun way to make friends and always an inspiring way to start the year. I hope that day is but the first of many when you give back to your community.

And I hope, like many Bruins before you, you will make service a core value in your future careers. Embrace the thrill and the joy of making a difference, both locally and globally.

I want you to be as excited as I am about this new adventure, about all that you are about to learn and about all the gifts you’ll share with your new community at UCLA. Today is a great day for you, and a great day for our campus! You and your classmates will have an indelible impact on this campus.

We are so glad to have you here.

As with all things, you’ll get out of this experience what you put into it. So, give it all you’ve got.

Once again, welcome! GO BRUINS! Now, it is my pleasure to turn the stage over to your USAC President Arielle Mokhtarzadeh.

A new school or a new college means meeting new people. Getting to know a different environment and a new set of individuals. To most, feeling welcome is the greatest feeling to have especially when you are not familiar with everything and everyone around you. But this is not the only reason to use a good welcome speech . People  also use these types of speeches for certain events. To lessen the awkwardness with meeting new people and a new environment, here are some 3+ welcome speeches you can check out.

Importance of Welcome Speech

Tips for Writing Welcome Speeches

Here are some tips for writing a welcome speech for students, followed by tips on writing a welcome speech for teachers.

  • Brainstorming : thinking always helps when you want to write a welcome speech. Ask yourself some questions and go from there.
  • Draft it: Once you have thought out what you want to write in your speech, draft it. Make a copy of your speech and write what you think should be included in the welcome speech. Don’t worry about making mistakes, as this is not the final outcome. This is a good starting point to reorganize your ideas and thoughts.
  • Tone: The tone of your writing should be professional first and foremost.
  • Spelling: Be mindful of your spelling mistakes. This can be done in your drafts, but avoid making them when you are writing your actual speech.
  • Revise:   If you have the time before presenting the speech, do some revisions. This would only take one to two minutes. This is just to make sure you have added everything that is necessary as well as your spelling and grammar are checked as well.
  • Length: Your welcome speech should not be too short that your audience will lose interest nor too long that may take up a lot of time. The length of your speech should be enough to last for 5 minutes. Nothing less than that.

Tips for writing welcome speeches for teachers:

  • Ponder:  Ponder on what you are trying or what you want to say. Also be mindful of the audience for your speech.
  • Outline:  After the first step, it’s time to outline your ideas. From your train of thought to your writing.
  • Scribble:  Once you have done outlining your ideas, it’s time to write the final output.
  • Reorganize:  Reorganize everything if you have the time. This is also where you can practice to see if the tone and words fit your audience.
  • Emphasis:  The tone of your speech should match the occasion as well as your audience. If you are using words that may be for adults, go back to reorganizing. The same goes if you use words that are fit for children and your audiences are college students.

How long is a welcome speech?

The word count for a welcome speech must be around 750 words, and lasts between three to five minutes.

Do you introduce yourself in your welcome speech?

Yes. You can introduce yourself in your welcome speech as you are the one presenting it. But do not add unnecessary information such as your age, location and contact details. Your audience need not know about that. They will think you are not taking this seriously.  So avoid that.

Why do I need to watch my words and actions when making a speech?

The reason to watch your words and actions is because you are up on stage making a speech. Be polite and professional at all times. Making rude comments or rude gestures should be avoided.

Welcoming people to an event or to a new environment is also one way of saying, I am happy to meet you. Remember, welcome speeches and first impressions often count.

Welcome Speech! for Student in School, College or University

This speech can be used by any senior who wants to welcome their freshman batch, and wish them Good Luck for the upcoming years at school. You can make changes according to your circumstances, and needs.

Welcome Speech for your new batch!

A very warm, and heartful welcome to (name of the school) on the behave of grade ( mention your grade).

I still remember last year, I was the one standing at your place and listening to my seniors with excitement, and a very weird feeling about the new journey, and challenges that were awaiting us all. I do not know if you guys are excited, or not but I hope you are ( even if you are you will, unfortunately, have to listen to me hehe).

I know what this feeling is standing there, and dreaming about the life coming ahead. When we were in school, I remember teachers, and our parents saying ” son, these are the only difficult times of your life. These are the defining years, just work hard these years, and college will be a piece of cake”. How many of you have heard this line from your elder cousins, parents, or relatives. That is almost everyone. Allow me to burst your bubble. College is tougher. The grind will continue but allow me to tell you good news as well that is ” you will get Immune to the grind”.

I do not want here to rant about anything but rather give you some advice that will help you get through this phase. I do not want you to do mistakes that we have done. This line has been carried out through generations, but it’s the natural instinct of students that no matter who so ever tells them not to repeat mistakes, no matter who so ever tells them ” the do not” they yet do it. So here, I am being your traditional mentor, and I am going to tell you all the things. College can be very overwhelming at times, trust me. But at that very moment, do not let it overwhelm you. Do not forget who you are. Let the college refine you but do not let it change you. And as per studies are concerned, I, being a science student, piety you all. But you will survive. Do not worry! You will get immune to failing tests or scoring badly. As it is a huge jump, you might feel like your world is falling apart but trust me it will not. It is a lot less scary than it looks. Just remember this, and in the end, always tell yourself that ” All is well”.

Just try to maintain a balance between your social life, and your education life as well as your sleep. Try to get done with all your admission tests, SATs, ACT, etc as soon as possible because you will not have time to do it in your 12th grade. Find what you are good at. Let it refine you. Let it mold you. As it is a famous Urdu proverb about the grind that ” Pathar tarashne k baad he hira bnta hai” Always remember if you can dream it, you can achieve it. If you can think about it, you have the potential to dream it.

Good Luck for the Grind. Kidding. Good Luck with the amazing life coming ahead. May all the odds be in your favor. Thank you!

I, Vashisht Raj from Mass Communication Course 3 rd year, welcome you all to the annual function of our college. I will be your host for today and my co-host Miss. Aanchal Panwar would be joining me in some time. Before we kick start this function, I on behalf of the entire students, would like to thank our guest of honor, Shri …………… for taking his precious time out and gracing the occasion with his presence. Even though he needs no introduction, I want to say that he has won various accolades in the aesthetics and art field and has gifted mankind spectacular pieces of artistic creation. Sir, we sincerely hope that you get to enjoy the day today with all of us.

Secondly, I want to thank our respected Principal and Vice Principal for giving us their consent as well as the complete creative freedom. Last but not the least, our respected professors without whom we are incomplete. They support us in many ways unimaginable not only helping us with the ideas, but also with the execution of those ideas and giving us their necessary moral support.

So when the day has finally arrived, I want to assure my audience that we are going to have a gala time today because all the participants have worked really hard. The preparation has been going on since last month and no stone has been left unturned by our students in making their performances look spectacular. Different performances have been lined up for today – some cultural dance performances, singing performances, instrument playing, etc. In addition, there will be some quiz rounds as well.

Besides, there is a speech giving ceremony by our Hon’ble principal who will be addressing the guest tonight as well as her dear students. The speech by her is not just a string of words, but is a powerful motivational speech that will boost the morale of our students and gives them the insight into various things. We consider ourselves quite fortunate to have been growing up intellectually under the aegis of our Hon’ble principal as well as our teachers who constantly help us in pushing our limits. The fact that the students of our college bring appreciation home is all because of the relentless efforts of our professors.

Their intent is not only to help us grow intellectually but also to strengthen our creative faculties. Other than studies, art and cultural streams, sports is also an equally important area of consideration. Both girls and boys of our college excellently perform in inter-college, zonal as well as national sports competitions. Our college is hence much renowned amongst other colleges and I sincerely hope that in the coming years, the fame of our college continues to grow and our students work diligently in different areas so that they come out with flying colors after the completion of their respective courses.

This is all from my side, thank you!

Welcome Speech for College Function 2

Good Morning Principal, Vice Principal, Beloved Teachers and Dear Students – Warm welcome to everyone!

On the behalf of our college, I – Aarushi Sinha – extend a very sincere welcome to all of you present here on the annual sports meet of our college. Sports are an integral as well as necessary part of our lives. It contributes not only to fitness but helps also in personality development of an individual.

Sports, whether team based or individually performed, are a great activity and provide us a variety of benefits other than physical fitness. Participation in sports can help build self-esteem, confidence and can motivate us to excel academically and can help build social skills. It can even teach certain individuals the ways and benefits of goal setting & practice. It also improves concentration.

So, with this purpose, we organize a sports meet every year, in which 100% participation is encouraged and each participant is rewarded and it is the participation of every individual that is most important for us and gives us immense joy. This year our college has been declared as one of the best institutions in the city, which has included and is following extra-curricular activities in daily schedule, simultaneously with academics. I wish to thank and congratulate each one of you present here as, without your support, it would not have been possible for us to organize an event of this level. What you see today, is the culmination of massive, continuous efforts put in by the students and teachers. So sit tight and cheer with your generous applause.

I am pleased to share that the distinguished guest has honored us with her presence today as the Chief Guest of our Sports day is none other than Mrs. Sheila, a Senior Member from the Ministry of Sports. She herself has been a legendary Indian wrestler & Olympian. She has epitomized unfailing spirit to succeed despite all odds. Mrs. Sheila has been one of the Indian women wrestlers who have made their nation proud many a times by outstanding performances in the area mostly dominated by men.

Her valiant struggle backed by her strong determination brought her all the way where she is now. She has won 3 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal for India along with 2 Bronze medals in World Wrestling Championship & Asian Wrestling Championship. It is a privilege for all of us gathered here to have such a famous personality amongst us, as our esteemed guest of honor.

Best of luck to all the students who are now going to present before us their talent and I pray to god that the best one should win. One should never lose hope even if you fail in a sport as failures lead to success. So with a huge round of applause, let us please call upon our chief guest to grace the occasion and share her life moments and inspiring life story with all of us here.

Hope you all will have a great time.

Welcome Speech for College Function 3

Hon’ble Guests, Respected Principal, Professors, Admin Staff and My Dear Friends – Warm Good Evening to all of you!

I, Akshay Panwar and my co-host Ananya Pandey welcome you all to another annual college function of ours and want to extend a note of thank you to our guest of honor Smt. ………..the Principal of ABC College for accepting our invitation and coming over to grace the annual function of our college. Friends, our guest of honor has effectively contributed in the field of research and is working with the department of the Oxford University. I, therefore, feel privileged to have introduced you to this great scholar.

To all the freshers who have joined this college this very year itself, I want to tell you that every year our college celebrates annual function with great enthusiasm and zeal like a festival and create wonderful memories. Of course, that goes without saying that a lot of efforts went into preparing for this big day as the preparation cannot happen overnight. It requires careful observation of every single detail because the slight negligence can spoil the whole effort.

So let us all, as an audience appreciate the efforts of all the participants who have been working hard, day and night so that they can shine through in their performances. We have been extremely fortunate that there was a support from all the sides not only for the participants, but also to those working backstage. Support from our Principal, Professors, fellow mates and the admin department was also there throughout. I cannot help appreciating the undaunting spirit of my team members who went out of their comfort zones to ensure that the tasks are completed at the end of the day. In fact, a special thank you goes to our sponsors as without them this annual function couldn’t have been this grand.

After a round of performances, there will also be the award giving ceremony where our college students who participated in the zonal, state as well as national level will be rewarded. So everyone get ready for some power-packed performances of our students and trust me you will not take your eyes off them.

The function will continue until 6 pm followed by the speech ceremony where our guest of honor would be addressing the students. There will also be a question-answer round where our students can ask question and engage in conversation with our guest. In the end, tea and snacks will be served. Welcome Speech for College Function 4

Esteemed Guest of Honor, Respected Principal, Professors and My Dear Friends – Warm Welcome to all of you to the 25 th annual function of our college!

I, Ananya Shukla – from BA English (Hons.) Program, 3 rd year – feel extremely privileged to be standing in front of you all and welcoming everyone in this grand celebration. The day is primarily special because of the annual function and secondly for the successful completion of 25 years of our college. In this long span of 25 years, the fame of our college has tremendously grown. The college was founded with a view to provide excellent learning opportunities to the students and a great platform to showcase their skills.

Beginning with a few foundation courses, our college has gone on to provide not only graduation courses, but post graduation as well as PhD courses. This is indeed quite an achievement for our college and we are also renowned for our well-equipped research centers. In fact, every year research scholars’ day is also celebrated where research scholars from different parts of the country are invited and knowledge is shared, that benefits everyone present under the same roof.

Other than academic achievements, we also cherish development in the field of sports, arts and culture. What I like the most about my college is that it gives equal importance to each and every discipline, so much so that students have the opportunity to achieve an overall development of their personality. Like every year, in today’s annual function too our students will try to put their best foot forward. The preparations have been going on from last two months. I hope all my friends shine through in their performances and give our audience, chiefly our special guest today a high dose of entertainment.

But before we kick start today’s program, please allow me to share the schedule of today’s annual function, i.e. firstly our Hon’ble principal will grace the stage by felicitating our guest of honor followed by a speech ceremony. Then will follow the performances of the students, which are a mix of dance performances, singing performances, playing of the instruments, etc. Before closing the day, we would also request our guest of honor to say a few words to our students and give away awards and medals to the candidates who have brought accolades and glory to our college in various disciplines.

Besides, I would also like to request the head of the sociology department to share her knowledge on women healthcare programs and what all are the lucrative opportunities available to them in different public as well as private sectors. It would hence be very enlightening for our female audience who can greatly benefit from the speech.

In the end, I just would want to say that may everyone enjoy today’s program and take back some wonderful memories. Now, I would request our Principal – Smt. …………. to kindly come on stage and say a few words in this regard.

Thank you all for being such a great audience!

More Than Just a Place: Dean Long's Prepared Welcome Remarks

  • Posted August 24, 2020
  • By News editor

Dean Bridget Long at Zoom Orientation

First, let me emphasize how excited I am to welcome you. The last five months have been tumultuous to say the least. We have all shared uncertainty, fear, anger, and disappointment, but we come together today to start afresh, to begin something new.

And as you embark on this journey, one that is also new for each and every faculty and staff member at HGSE, I urge you to consider several things that might help guide your time this year.

First, be assured, you belong as part of this community.

As you sit watching your screen, some of you may be wondering, is this real?  Am I really a Harvard student?  Let me first assure you, yes, you belong as a part of this community.

And let me just say: you are an impressive group. Each and every one of you has shown us how you’ve successfully tackled challenges and made the most of the opportunities you’ve been given. Your accomplishments are not easily summarized by a test score or letter grade. Yes, there’s overwhelming evidence of how smart you are, but we also wanted you for your work ethic, your imagination, and your potential. Most importantly, we wanted your passion for improving education.

I hope you have already begun the exciting work of getting to know each other but allow me to spend just a moment introducing you as an incoming class. This year, the HGSE community extends not only across the U.S. but also includes students from 62 other countries. Joining you are students from Morocco, Ghana, Ireland, Vietnam, Jamaica, Finland Argentina, Bangladesh, and Australia, and I could go on. Among you are teachers, researchers, policymakers, leaders, activists, public servants, artists, innovators, and dreamers. Some of you have always known that you wanted to be in education. Others have transitioned from other fields. Still others of you have long been in the field of education, and you seek this time to reflect on your practice and learn more about the context and conditions in which you work. You bring an astonishing array of experiences, perspectives, and accomplishments. But no matter where you’re from and what you hope to do in the future, we are delighted that you’re joining us.

Just to give you a sense of this year’s fascinating, caring, talented, and entrepreneurial class, we have students who have: spent over a decade in leadership within the D.C. public schools; published children’s coloring books celebrating historical female trailblazers in science, technology, and art; and devoted themselves to improving education access and opportunity on the Acoma Pueblo reservation in New Mexico. We have someone who focused on expanding access to agricultural education in Davenport, Iowa; another person founded a non-profit that empowers young people to be role models in championing LGBTQ+ equality. We even have a student who performed on tour in the Broadway musicals Chicago  and Hamilton , and the former Executive Director of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. I know throughout the year you will learn about so many more of the interesting histories of your fellow students, as well as the faculty and staff.

The second thing I want you to consider is what do you bring with you?

I urge you to bring your full selves into the classroom and other activities. Bring your ideas, experiences, perspectives, and dreams with you as you engage with each other using a range of tools. In fact, this year’s circumstances have given us a unique opportunity: you did not need to leave your home communities to be a part of HGSE. You bring them with you. I hope you will share them with your classmates just as you are bringing the classroom into your homes.

Throughout the week, in an effort for our global community to get to know one another, I invite you to introduce yourself on Instagram, using the hashtag #IAmHGSE. And don’t forget to follow us at @HarvardEducation.

And to encourage you even further, I have a tangible way to help you share yourself and where you’re from. To celebrate this new community and our common mission to improve education, as well as to warmly welcome you, the Dean’s Office is giving each of you a free HGSE T-shirt. To have your shirt mailed to you, simply visit the Orientation section of the Canvas website and click on the link for further instructions.

I want you to show your HGSE spirit wherever you are in the world, and throughout the year, we’ll be inviting you to share photos of you in your home communities wearing the HGSE shirt. Be creative with what you share, whether it’s a photo of you hard at work or hard at play. Snap a picture next to a seminal landmark, include family members, or stand outside the school you support. I look forward to seeing how we cover the globe, and who knows, the shirts might even help you find each other. So be sure to order your shirt this week, and I can’t wait to see what each of you bring to HGSE.

The third thing for you to consider is what will we do together?

I do want to acknowledge that I wish we could hold this event in person, but I also don’t want to waste this valuable chance to work and learn together. I’m struck by something an old friend of mine from graduate school posted on social media:

“We may limit ourselves if we stick to the notion that a university is a spot on a map rather than a group of people.”

Stated another way, we are selling ourselves short if we only think of HGSE as a place — a spot on a map — rather than as a group of dedicated, talented people sharing a mission to improve education. So even though we may be physically apart, let us not be socially distant.

And this is the time to think boldly and expansively. Education needs us — the field needs you.

Millions of children have been out of school for months, and early studies suggest the learning loss has been severe, especially for those with special needs. Add to that the fact that millions have gone without regular access to the food and health care provided by schools, without the safety of adult supervision and after-school programs, and without reliable internet connectivity or access to learning tools.

The effects of this will be felt for a generation. There will be no return to “normal” anytime soon. And I don’t know that returning to “normal” should ever be the goal. From our youngest pre-schoolers to our adult students, there are major gaps in opportunity, achievement, and success.

And globally, while there has been a great expansion in primary education, attending school is not a guarantee of learning, and hundreds of millions of children still cannot read or write. Does that sound like something to aspire to return to?

And this moment has underscored more than ever that so many have experienced exclusion, marginalization, and injustice simply because of the color of their skin or some other part of their identity. We need to do far better than what has been considered the status quo or “normal” in society.

So what is going to be your contribution — make that our contribution? What are we going to do together?

Even before this day, many of you were already making your mark by helping those around you. And the good news is that you are now part of an institution that has a long track-record of doing the unimaginable. You see, 2020 is HGSE’s Centennial, and when this pandemic hit, we were just at the beginning of kicking off a yearlong set of events to reflect on HGSE’s history. Just like we never could have imagined what would happen during 2020, anyone from our early years would be shocked at how HGSE has evolved and grown during the past 100 years.

In fact, for a time even our existence was questioned as universities began to close education schools. But HGSE advocated successfully for education to be recognized as a profession in its own right, to be a specialized body of knowledge. It was people here who pushed to be inside schools, to be connected to learners, educators, and communities — not just researchers sitting in the ivory tower.

It was people here who were courageous enough and bold enough to question the deeply-held assumption that only some students could learn. All means all. You are now part of a School that graduated the first woman from Harvard, had the first female dean in all of the Harvard schools, and is for the first time being led by a person of color, an African-American woman. These three facts alone should tell you there is something special about this School.

But HGSE’s Centennial is about much more than reflecting on our past. This has been a pivotal year to consider what we want to be in the future, and no one could have imagined the dramatic turn those conversations would take due to COVID-19. We have been at our best when we have focused on our central mission to improve education, and I bring up HGSE’s history now to encourage you as you look ahead. Know that anything is possible when a set of dedicated, talented people come together to pursue a common mission. The last several months have underscored just how essential education and schools are to society, and this is an especially critical time with a flurry of new ideas, new collaborations, and renewed calls for investing in education. What if this is a time like no other — when we imagine something new for our students, their families, and ourselves?

Closer to home, as you embark on your HGSE journey, let’s start by considering what hasn’t changed — the faculty, the students, and staff all working together and wrestling with important issues in education. But this year of remote learning also opens up new experiences and new opportunities not previously possible. We are no longer constrained by time and space. We can be much more flexible because we are not beholden to logistical constraints.

And perhaps most importantly for an education school with a mission to impact the world, we can now more actively engage with the world around us. You are embedded in communities around the world who need our support and who are also our partners in this work. Bring what you see into the classroom. Bring the problems of practice you are grappling with to your discussions. Let us work on them together. Let us share research and expertise but also the lessons learned across the many communities you inhabit. Together you represent a massive network of educators. And you join the 30,000 alumni of HGSE along with our many partners, collaborators, and fellow educators.

Remember, HGSE is much more than a spot on a map, and this year we get to live that fact.

So what will we do together? This is the question I want you to explore, starting today. None of us alone has all the answers, but we can work together, and with those in our many, many communities, we can chart a new course for education.

I want to close by again recognizing this special beginning and new adventure. Welcome to the HGSE community. Be assured, you belong as part of this community, and I look forward to learning what you bring with you. Students, families, colleagues, leaders, and communities — are desperate for solutions. And I am optimistic, because of all of you. So let’s see what we can do to improve education and our world — together.

Welcome Speech on Annual Day Function in College and School for Guests

We warmly welcome everyone – outstanding guests, correspondents, teachers, and dear friends and parents of such great and talented children. Finally, the auspicious day has come; put an end to our inpatient anticipation and tireless preparations for this event.

I am a little surprised how a person like me, who loved every aspect of this stage, but so hesitant to come here and talk, now has the courage. With great pleasure and satisfaction, I stand here to give a welcome speech on our most expected annual day.

Indeed! The annual school day is the culmination of the school’s academic year. It is a time for celebration and recognition of the students as well as the school’s achievements.

It is also a time for teamwork and being proud that the school stands for and believes and values. Encourage the children to participate in the various events and see their blossom into an individual with several talents.

It is a pleasant evening, steeping in a solemn mood, atmosphere, and singing of my friends. Thank you all for your enthusiasm and “community spirit.”. I express a deep sense of gratitude to our correspondent Lady for giving her a helping hand on every right path we have chosen.

It is a day of joy because together, we will remember many of the moving stories we have experienced in the past years. It is also a day on which our old students, parents, and friends will learn more about the past and future development of the study and school. Our students have always been known as students with diverse capabilities, and I am sure that you will agree today.

We are at a stage where the chapter closes, and a new one begins. It is overwhelming that we are now counting the years since the school was founded. What a journey it was – every year it has its triumphs and struggles. It was an adventurous journey.

The year 2018 – 19 was celebrated in many ways. The Cricket team won, and our school got it with the association of 10 or 11. The similarity between them is that both could not be possible without the team’s effort. It is the most valuable efforts of students who have always cooperate to solve problems and enjoy happiness in the team.

The year was exciting, full of challenges and revival like everyone else. Some days were an endless stream of emergencies that came unannounced. Everyone allows learning, ask questions, reflect, and introspect. As we prepare for the year, we welcome new tryst, new questions, and new problems: new solutions and new heights.

Moreover, when we do, it, we remember that … “On each blade of grass sits an angel who still says: Grows! It grows! – More about school development and a few other points.

Finally, we know that: we have become stronger and intelligent. The happiness and satisfaction of teachers and students show that “everything is good” or “almost everything is good.” Thanks a lot for always trust and support.

We set our standards, strive to achieve them, and rise to higher levels. Science, evolution, and effort will never cease.

Once again, welcome to all these memorable festivities throughout the year. Everyone will be surprised by watching what will be on the stage. I want to thank everyone for giving me this opportunity.

I am feeling proud in saying that the talent they have displayed here today is sufficient to say that they have the potential to become worthy citizens of our society. Education is about far more than what happens within the four walls of a classroom.

Undoubtedly we are very fortunate to have such teachers, trainers, and instructors who recognize this. If this infrastructure and teachers are the two resources available to the school, then definitely, we the students are the third ones. Really, one of the joys of teaching is to draw that creative, academic and sporting potential out of the students.

We all are gathered here on this Annual Day to motivate and inspire the young minds to showcase their talents. This is a highly important occasion for everyone. It is because of that apart from the fact that this celebration highlights our school’s continuous success in the area of education. And, this platform is also an opportunity to welcome our Chief Guest of today’s evening.

Advancing civil discourse on college campuses

Article by Meghan Keating Photos by Maria Errico April 16, 2024

Students and faculty from across the country gather at UD Biden School for SNF Ithaca National Student Dialogue

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Ithaca Initiative in the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Delaware welcomed over 100 students, faculty and staff from across the United States for its third annual SNF Ithaca National Student Dialogue from March 22–24 on the Newark campus.

From Friday to Sunday, the weekend-long event took attendees through case study presentations, panel discussions and various breakout sessions that included combined and separate tracks for faculty and students. The balance of structured and less structured sessions allowed for productive activity while leaving space for organic moments of connection.

The 2024 program featured a new workshop session specially for faculty called “Teaching Democracy in the Classroom,” which kicked off the weekend with faculty and doctoral students from both of SNF Ithaca’s sister programs, Johns Hopkins University’s SNF Agora Institute and the University of Pennsylvania’s SNF Paideia Program . Students from each of these programs attended the SNF Ithaca National Student Dialogue. This year also featured an open invitation for UD students to join in on the learning and connection opportunities.

Centering around the timely theme of “free expression and the inclusive community,” each agenda item was grounded in the higher education climate of the present-day and recent months. How do free speech and inclusivity intersect? How can they co-exist on college campuses? Is it appropriate to frame these democratic principles as conflicting with one another?

A fraught challenge

Six decades after the Civil Rights Movement took the nation by storm and the concept of free speech burst into the public consciousness via college campuses, the collective group gathered on Saturday at Clayton Hall was quickly reminded of how full circle things feel today and the risks at hand, albeit with some shifts around those speaking up regarding freedom of speech.

“We need not look far to see national civil discourse rapidly deteriorating. Amid political violence, amid rampant conspiracy theories and polarization, the world is looking to us — to each one of you — to engage in the preservation of our democracy,” said Biden School interim dean Joseph Trainor as he addressed the crowd.

Biden School interim dean Joseph Trainor kicked off Saturday’s program by addressing attendees and reminding them of the importance of events like the National Student Dialogue.

As he set the stage for the weekend’s event, Trainor recounted President Joe Biden, and the simple directive he shared with faculty and staff upon the school’s naming in 2018: “Help students learn how to talk to each other again. Help them to engage in dialogue across difference. Help them to bridge the divide.”

This year’s dialogue saw 30 academic institutions in attendance, from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to regional public universities, religiously based liberal arts colleges, research universities and community colleges. Such a diverse pool of institutions and people created the ideal foundation for an event like this.

“This weekend, you’re going to engage fellow students from across the country and around the world who have different lived experiences, different identities and different political ideologies,” Trainor said.  “Despite those differences, you’ll struggle together to consider a fraught challenge facing college campuses everywhere: the struggle between free expression and inclusion. Striking the balance between protecting free speech and fostering inclusivity requires a willingness to engage with others in search of common ground, in search of approaches that respect both of these critical values of our democracy.”

What is civil discourse, exactly?

When gathering such a mix of people, disagreement and tension are unavoidable. How those differences are navigated between the individuals at play is crucial, said Timothy J. Shaffer, Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Chair of Civil Discourse and SNF Ithaca Director.

“Disagreement is not a reason to stop talking to one another,” he said.

Just like opposing viewpoints, the concept of civil discourse is multi-layered. But Shaffer believes it’s easily defined when applied to scenarios like the SNF Ithaca National Student Dialogue.

“Civil discourse will be understood as a tool that can help navigate difficult conversations while maintaining and strengthening democratic values,” he said, noting that approaching it as a “collaborative and relational process to engage with others and co-create meaning” is key.

SNF Ithaca serves as the ultimate destination for students across the country to come together and work in partnership to develop policy solutions.

While this concept extends far beyond the confines of a college campus, the higher education setting and target audience are fitting for many reasons.

“Colleges and universities have diverse populations from various backgrounds, cultures and beliefs,” Shaffer said. “[They] also have their own explicit or implicit cultures, norms and values. These may reflect broader societal norms or challenge them, providing opportunities to explore and critique cultural beliefs and practices.

“Whether we are thinking about society more broadly or our campuses more narrowly, being able to understand and address our common issues requires us to engage in dialogue to inform policy or collective actions,” he added.

The SNF Ithaca Initiative at UD, now in its third year , was named after the home of Odysseus — one of Greek mythology's greatest heroes, whose talent for persuasive discourse was revered in the world’s first democracy. For Odysseus, Ithaca represents not only the beginning of a journey but the ultimate destination. Likewise, the SNF Ithaca Initiative serves as both the beginning of the Biden School students' journey toward becoming engaged and effective citizens and as the ultimate destination for students across the country to come together and work in partnership to develop policy solutions.

“Being able to talk across divides, to approach every interaction with curiosity rather than defensiveness, to recognize the inherent humanity of others even while vigorously defending deeply held values, these are some of the most essential skills young people can learn,” said Casey Russo, Programs Co-Director at SNF. “The National Student Dialogue and SNF Ithaca more broadly are helping young citizens gain skills that are essential to a healthy democracy.”

Holding space for nuance

The importance of nuance, context and language were major conversation points during the weekend, weaving together the various sessions on Saturday and Sunday. The SNF Ithaca Student Leaders , a cohort of five UD undergraduate students selected to serve in their roles for the academic year, presented their case study, “Navigating the Intersection of Free Expression and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on College Campuses.”

Using the fall 2023 resignation of the former University of Pennsylvania president Liz Magill and the events that preceded and followed, the session covered the history of free speech on campus, its current state and its future.

During the event, SNF Ithaca Student Leaders presented their case study, “Navigating the Intersection of Free Expression and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on College Campuses.”

Mya Trujillo, a student at Howard University who attended this year’s dialogue, feels passionately about connecting with others on important, “hot button” issues like free speech, no matter how intimidating they may seem on paper.

“It was truly inspiring to see so many fellow students eager to spark change in their communities,” she said. “While the discussions we had were constructive, they merely scratched the surface of the iceberg that is free speech and inclusivity in this country. These kinds of events serve as the foundational building blocks toward creating spaces for productive discourse across polarized groups. While the dialogue’s attendees weren’t polarized, they were able to identify some root causes of the dysfunctional discourse that takes place in today’s political climate.”

Colleges and universities are unique ecosystems built on nuance, with various factors and actors constantly at play. Recognizing those layers while engaging in civil discourse helps build upon ideas and bring opposite viewpoints together instead of aiming to tear each other apart.

“Facts are really important, but they don’t speak for themselves,” Shaffer recently told the Chronicle of Higher Education . “They have to be understood and interpreted. If we can help create space for that to be part of the conversation, I think we’re better for it.”

Culture of conversation

The importance of context was a prominent topic during the faculty panel discussion, “Competing or Complementary Democratic Principles in Higher Education,” featuring Lori Britt of James Madison University, SNF Ithaca Affiliated Faculty member Jennifer Lambe, Nicholas V. Longo of Providence College and UD Vice President for Student Life José-Luis Riera.

From residence halls to board rooms, there are countless elements and subgroups of people in orbit, sometimes with campus communities of tens of thousands to consider.

Lambe, who specializes in First Amendment rights and serves as an associate professor with the Department of Communication in the UD College of Arts and Sciences, quickly pointed out that “universities are just not one context.”

From residence halls to board rooms, there are countless elements and subgroups of people in orbit, sometimes with campus communities of tens of thousands to consider.

Britt said it’s about fostering a “culture of conversation” in these environments.

Simon Brand, one of the SNF Ithaca Student Leaders, saw these topics at play throughout the weekend.

“As a facilitator, I led sessions delving into the core issues that, though unique to each participant's campus, resonated universally. Recognizing both the similarities and distinctive challenges faced by our colleges shed light on the best strategies to foster civil discourse,” he said.

Impact across state lines

As the weekend came to a close, student attendees, in particular, were energized by their learnings and ready to take these new tools back to their respective campuses.

“Since being here, my idea around [civic engagement] has really evolved and I feel like something is taking root as I’m listening to my peers and the faculty and the staff talk about what this actually means,” said Sunrise Smith of Holyoke Community College in Massachusetts.

Implementing civil discourse training at first-year student orientation is what Deriana Brown plans to pitch upon her return to the University of San Francisco.

“I think that would be a great start to your college journey. Learning to discuss respectfully is definitely a skill that you need to take with you throughout your college journey and beyond,” she said.

Fostering proactive communities of dialogue is what William Thompson hopes to bring back with him to the University of Virginia.

“One of the things that really stood out to me was the idea of making dialogue part of the culture of campus proactively, not just in a reactive way when issues pop up when we feel a need to respond to things,” he said. “The idea that we’re regularly bringing people together sometimes just to talk and exercise those muscles and develop them for when we do have to face issues that really do matter.”

“It was truly inspiring to see so many fellow students eager to spark change in their communities,” said Mya Trujillo of Howard University.

In these student takeaways, the words of educator and activist Myles Horton certainly rang true: “One of the best ways of educating people is to give them an experience that embodies what you are trying to teach. When you believe in a democratic society, you provide a setting for education that is democratic.”

Biden to speak at Morehouse College commencement, sparking faculty concerns

The decision has raised some objections from faculty members, and administrators are set to host a forum about it thursday., by carol e. lee, nnamdi egwuonwu and aaron gilchrist | nbc news • published 18 mins ago.

Morehouse College is set to announce that President Joe Biden will deliver its commencement address on May 19, but some faculty members have raised concerns about the decision, according to two people familiar with the matter and an email to faculty members reviewed by NBC News .

“This week, I received an inquiry from concerned faculty about rumors they were hearing about President Biden’s selection as the 2024 Commencement speaker,” Kendrick Brown, Morehouse College’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, wrote in the email to faculty members Friday.

Brown said he would convene a virtual meeting Thursday “to extend an opportunity for faculty with different perspectives on the selection of our Commencement speaker to ask questions and make comments.” He said students would also engage with college President David Thomas.

Brown did not respond to a request for further comment, and a spokesperson for Morehouse declined to offer more details.

A Morehouse faculty member told NBC News administrators are believed to be concerned that faculty members will join students in protest of Biden during the ceremony.

The pushback against leadership’s decision comes amid increasing protests on college campuses over Biden’s support for Israel in its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip . The protests since the war began in October have already forced Biden, and other top administration officials, to dramatically scale back appearances at college campuses.

Commencement season is typically a time when presidents reach young audiences, and it offers them opportunities to deliver keynote addresses highlighting their accomplishments and the future. In an election year, commencement speeches can carry particular significance.

But Biden’s addresses this year are poised to be fraught, largely because of growing protests over his refusal to call for a permanent, immediate cease-fire in Gaza without conditions. Biden is struggling with younger voters, and recent polling also indicates many Black voters are not enthusiastic about supporting his candidacy.

Speaking at a historically Black college would provide an “opportunity” for Biden, according to the person familiar with the controversy.

The White House declined to comment.

Pro-Palestinian protesters

Brown wrote in his email that Morehouse first extended its invitation to Biden in September and that the college would announce him as its speaker early this week.

And, he wrote, “the College does not plan to rescind its accepted invitation to President Biden.” The meeting Thursday “is a forum for discussion and to respond to questions about the invitation that was extended and accepted,” he wrote.

Morehouse, like other colleges, has faced students speaking out about the war in Gaza . In February, the Maroon Tiger — Morehouse’s student publication —  reported  that a student pulled an Israeli flag down from the chapel and was detained by campus police.

“Students are not in favor of the way in which the United States has handled this situation, and are surely not in favor of the trauma and the pain and the genocide that the Palestinian people are going through — but also that innocent civilians and Israel are going through as well,” Calvin Bell, a Morehouse College student said in February, after the flag incident.

A source familiar with the commencement planning told NBC News: “It’s not been a secret nationwide, if not globally, that there are a lot of concerns ... about how the war has been handled and how America and the presidency has been in the war. We’ve heard conversations like that. There’s also plenty of people who are excited to have a sitting president as their commencement speaker.”
