We all know how great it feels to receive gifts. However, the joy of getting is short-lived. Our lives are richer when we share, and that great inner joy comes from helping others to better their lives.

Truly giving from the heart fills your life with joy and nourishes your soul. Giving provides an intrinsic reward that’s far more valuable than the gift. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “To find yourself, lose yourself in the service of others.”

Giving takes you out of yourself and allows you to expand beyond earthly limitations. True joy lies in the act of giving without an expectation of receiving something in return.

Academic research and thousands of years of human history confirm that achieving meaning, fulfillment, and happiness in life comes from making others happy, and not from being self-centred. Mother Teresa is a famous example. She found fulfillment in giving of herself to others. She helped change the expression on dying people’s faces from distress and fear to calmness and serenity. She made their undeniable pain a little easier to bear.

It has been my experience that when you’re focused on giving to others you’re less likely to become consumed by your own concerns and challenges. Giving provides an opportunity to look beyond our own world and see the bigger picture.

A great perspective can be achieved by stepping out of our own world and venturing into the world of other people. Your worries and challenges may not seem as significant when compared to other people’s situations.

The act of giving kindles self-esteem and brings happiness. Scientists have discovered that happiness is related to how much gratitude you show. After several years of soul searching, I discovered that my unhappiness was due to my want for things to fill the void of loneliness.

My search for inner happiness led me towards gratitude. During this process of self-realization, I also discovered “ The Purpose of Living.” Yes, I believe that giving thanks makes you happier. But don’t take my word for it—try it out for yourself.

Giving is one of the best investments you can make towards achieving genuine happiness. True giving comes from the heart, with no expectation of reciprocation. You’ll find that the more you give, the more you’ll receive.

The power of giving is manifested in the kindness and generosity that you bestow on someone else. When you give to another unselfishly, the vibrational energy emitting from your subconscious is at its strongest. The power of giving, according to neuroscience, is that it feels good.

A Chinese proverb says: “If you always give, you will always have.” A famous American author and management expert, Ken Blanchard, declared “The more I give away, the more comes back.”

If you find yourself feeling unhappy, try making someone else happy and see what happens. If you’re feeling empty and unfulfilled, try doing some meaningful and worthwhile work and see how you feel. The catch is that you must do this work with passion and enthusiasm.

There are many organizations, institutions and people who are engaged in exemplary works of giving. Narayanan Krishnan is a management graduate from Madurai, India who gave up his career as chef with a five-star hotel when he saw a man so hungry that he was feeding on his own excreta. From there on Krishnan started his noble initiative to feed thousands of destitute and homeless people in his state—free of cost.

Another example of giving is Sanjit “Bunker” Roy, founder of the Barefoot College . Since graduating from college in 1965, Mr. Roy has committed his life to serve the poor and to help rural communities become self-sufficient. The Barefoot College education program encourages learning-by-doing, such as training grandmothers from Africa and the Himalayan region to be solar engineers so they could bring electricity to their remote villages.

It’s the joy and love that we extend to others that brings true happiness or union with God. When we give, we reap the joy of seeing a bright smile, laughter, tears of joy and gratitude for life . We know that if people give just a little more—of their time, skills, knowledge, wisdom, compassion, wealth and love—the world would be a more peaceful and healthier place.

Great submissions… It all boils down to love. Giving is work onto where it’s received. It’s easy to give off from what you love doing and it’s your foundation for a lifestyle of giving. God started it all by giving His only begotten which cost him everything yet free. This means He did not put a sale tag on Him, that whosoever believes must then buy with the prevailing currency. But gave all that He had to gain all of Himself in us. I get great joy from helping others succeed.

Each day, there are kind things that I can do for people. I see the value that others have in my life and make it a point to determine how I can help them. When people struggle, I want to do something to improve their lives. I am joyful when I can help others have a better life.

For me, helping others is a top priority. Being able to provide others with a path toward success makes me feel valuable. Helping others is one of my greatest joys. When I help others, I also help myself see the joy and beauty to be found in life.

Others can succeed in all types of ways. I look for ways to help others realize their goals and dreams. These can be small or large, but they are all important. Everyone has dreams and goals that they want to see come to pass, so I help them when I can.

Because I give to others, they give back to me. I get so much joy, peace, and love from other people. They see how much I do for others, and they appreciate me. When we all work together, we can do amazing and important things.

I enjoy being part of the success of others. Seeing their joy makes me overjoyed myself! I have love and happiness in my heart, and I enjoy giving it away to others. It always comes back to me.

Consider the positive feelings you experienced the last time when you did something good for someone else. Perhaps it was the satisfaction of running an errand for your neighbor, or the sense of fulfillment from volunteering at a local organization, or the gratification from donating to a good cause. Or perhaps it was the simple joy of having helped out a friend. This “ warm glow ” of pro-sociality is thought to be one of the drivers of generous behavior in humans. One reason behind the positive feelings associated with helping others is that being pro-social reinforces our sense of relatedness to others, thus helping us meet our most basic psychological needs .

Research has found many examples of how doing good, in ways big or small, not only feels good, but also does us good. For instance, the well-being-boosting and depression -lowering benefits of volunteering have been repeatedly documented. As has the sense of meaning and purpose that often accompanies altruistic behavior. Even when it comes to money, spending it on others predicts increases in happiness compared to spending it on ourselves. Moreover, there is now neural evidence from fMRI studies suggesting a link between generosity and happiness in the brain. For example, donating money to charitable organizations activates the same (mesolimbic) regions of the brain that respond to monetary rewards or sex . In fact, the mere intent and commitment to generosity can stimulate neural change and make people happier.

Recent research suggests yet another way our well-being can benefit from practicing pro-social behavior: helping others regulate their emotions helps us regulate our own emotions, decreases symptoms of depression and ultimately, improves our emotional well-being.

Regulating each other’s emotions

Our day-to-day lives offer plenty of opportunities for regulating our own emotions. When we are happy, sad, frustrated or anxious , we find ways of managing our feelings to meet the demands of our environments. At times, however, when the weight of our emotions becomes too much to bare, we turn to others for support. Social regulation of emotion is a key component of our relationships. Whenever we navigate children through tantrums, help a friend through a breakup, or rely on our partners for comfort after a challenging day, we often engage in social regulation of emotion. Whether we are the ones providing the emotional support or the ones seeking it, the 2 most common ways to help others regulate their emotions are through acceptance (showing empathy by validating their feelings) and reappraisal (helping others think about their situation in a different way). A recent study from Columbia University has revealed that when helping others navigate their stressful situations, we are enhancing our own emotion regulation skills, and thus, benefiting our own emotional well-being.

Over a three-week period, participants were provided with an anonymous online environment where they could share their personal stories of stressful life events. They could also provide emotional support to other participants by replying to their entries with short, empathetic messages. Participants helped each other by identifying potential distortions in thinking, suggesting reappraisal strategies or providing words of acceptance. Responses were rated for their degree of helpfulness and participants were given the opportunity to express their gratitude for the acceptance or reappraisal messages that they received from others.

The results showed that helping others to regulate their emotions predicted better emotional and cognitive outcomes for those participants who were giving the help. Moreover, because heightened levels of self-focused attention are common in depression , the more people helped others, the more their helping behavior predicted a reduction in their own depression, thanks to the use of reappraisal in their own daily lives. Follow-up analyses further showed that this increase in reappraisal in people’s lives also affected their mood and subjective happiness. Interestingly, messages that used other-focused language (e.g., second-person pronouns such as you and your ) were considered more helpful and garnered more gratitude from participants. In fact, using other-focused language not only helped the people in need, but also those who were helping. This finding suggests that when providing emotional support to others, trying to fully take on their perspective can increase reappraisal and lead to better psychological outcomes for those who are providing the support.

Next time you find yourself helping someone with regulating their emotions, consider how your efforts may be providing you with an opportunity to practice for future situations at a distance, and consequently, improving your emotional well-being. 8 Tips For Writing A Great Reflective Essay (With Examples)

By writing a reflective essay, you can capture some of these ephemeral emotions and make sense of who you are. Below, I share eight tips (and a few examples) that will help you do it in a better way. You may have to write a reflective essay as a part of an academic assignment or a college paper. Or perhaps you want to create it for yourself and never show it to anyone. Regardless of the reason, after reading this article, you will hopefully become better at it. They helped a lot of students over the years, so you may check them out.

Here’s how to write a great reflective essay:

Many great men and women (like Charles Darwin or Frida Kahlo ) had a habit of keeping a journal. This seems to be forgotten these days as we record everything through our mobile devices. But the habit of introspective writing and journaling helps you get in touch with your inner self and even improves your mental health. The reflective essay serves a similar purpose. It lets you search for meaning in your life and lets you discover the underlying causes of your actions.

You may start with an introduction of experience, an event, or a memory on which you’ll reflect. 4. Learn how to structure your essay

In terms of length, it all depends on your assignment, but usually, the reflective essay has between 300 and 700 words . It has a rather informal structure and the use of language. After all, you’re drilling into your personal experiences, and often, this requires a poetic turn of the phrase. You’re more than welcome to use a wide range of advanced vocabulary .

Introduction

In this part, you set the tone for your reflection. You implicitly or explicitly say what will you reflect on, and what prompted you to do that. If you’re writing an academic paper , you’ll have to be more direct and for example, say: “What follows, are my reflections on what I’ve learned about life during the first year of college”.

Here, you sum up your essay and leave your audience with a final thought. Look ahead into the future and write about how your experiences are going to affect your life from now on. What’s the direction you’re going to take? What is there to look ahead to? You may also look backward and see how different you were in the past, compared to now. “I think it’s good for a person to spend time alone. 5. Create an outline for your essay

As with most writing assignments , the work begins with ideation and then creating some sort of outline . Here’s a simple process you can use to get everything ready before you start writing: a) Scan your mind in search of powerful experiences, meaningful memories, and thoughts about your past. This will serve as a raw material from which you’ll sculpt a piece of prose. b) Consider the attractiveness of your topic from the reader’s point of view. You certainly don’t want to bore anyone, so pick something interesting, but important. c) Organize your essay and divide it into a couple of paragraphs. Each paragraph should contain one important idea. d) Decide in which sequence you would like to share your ideas. Put some logic and chronology behind it. e) Jot down any side notes included in the essay. It’s always better to have an overabundance of material.

And so we learn early: It is better to give than to receive. The venerable aphorism is drummed into our heads from our first slice of a shared birthday cake. But is there a deeper truth behind the truism?

The resounding answer is yes. Scientific research provides compelling data to support the anecdotal evidence that giving is a powerful pathway to personal growth and lasting happiness. Through fMRI technology, we now know that giving activates the same parts of the brain that are stimulated by food and sex. Experiments show evidence that altruism is hardwired in the brain—and it’s pleasurable. Helping others may just be the secret to living a life that is not only happier but also healthier, wealthier, more productive, and meaningful.

But it’s important to remember that giving doesn’t always f eel great. The opposite could very well be true: Giving can make us feel depleted and taken advantage of. Here are some tips to that will help you give not until it hurts, but until it feels great:

1. Find your passion

Our passion should be the foundation for our giving. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving. It’s only natural that we will care about this and not so much about that, and that’s OK. It should not be simply a matter of choosing the right thing, but also a matter of choosing what is right for us.

2. Give your time

The gift of time is often more valuable to the receiver and more satisfying for the giver than the gift of money. We don’t all have the same amount of money, but we all do have time on our hands, and can give some of this time to help others—whether that means we devote our lifetimes to service, or just give a few hours each day or a few days a year.

3. Give to organizations with transparent aims and results

According to Harvard scientist Michael Norton, “Giving to a cause that specifies what they’re going to do with your money leads to more happiness than giving to an umbrella cause where you’re not so sure where your money is going.”

4. Find ways to integrate your interests and skills with the needs of others

“Selfless giving, in the absence of self-preservation instincts, easily becomes overwhelming,” says Adam Grant, author of Give & Take . It is important to be “otherish,” which he defines as being willing to give more than you receive, but still keeping your own interests in sight.

5. Be proactive, not reactive

We have all felt the dread that comes from being cajoled into giving, such as when friends ask us to donate to their fundraisers. In these cases, we are more likely to give to avoid humiliation rather than out of generosity and concern. This type of giving doesn’t lead to a warm glow feeling; more likely it will lead to resentment. Instead we should set aside time, think about our options, and find the best charity for our values.

6. Don’t be guilt-tripped into giving

I don’t want to discourage people from giving to good causes just because that doesn’t always cheer us up. If we gave only to get something back each time we gave, what a dreadful, opportunistic world this would be! Yet if we are feeling guilt-tripped into giving, chances are we will not be very committed over time to the cause.

The key is to find the approach that fits us. When we do, then the more we give, the more we stand to gain purpose, meaning and happiness—all of the things that we look for in life but are so hard to find.

Many people view life as a pyramid with those on the bottom serving those above them. They envy the people at the top believing joy and happiness is obtained by being served. And thus, they strive. They passionately seek the top of the world’s imaginary pyramid. They reach desperately for the money, fame, or power that would seat them higher in the world’s affections. Unfortunately, they often don‘t realize their pursuits are misplaced until they have already sacrificed countless good gifts and simple joys along the way.

Life is actually more fulfilling down below.

Choosing intentionally to help others flips life upside-down. In helping others rather then seeking our own gain, we find great freedom. Service to others results in liberty. We are able to say no to modern culture‘s games of promotion and authority. We live lives of less stress, less anxiety, and less frustration. We begin to feel more fulfilled, more complete, more alive. Living for others completely abolishes our need for a pecking order. It becomes a great weight off our shoulders when we no longer seek power and mastery over others. Real joy is found not in being served, but in choosing to serve.

And experiencing this unexpected happiness and freedom is not as hard as some might think:

1. Open your eyes to the needs around you. People who need your help exist all around you—in your home, your neighborhood, and your work place. The first, most important step is to simply notice them.

2. Do something to move them forward. Even if you don‘t have all the answers or facts, jump in and help as best you know how. Refuse to use the excuse, “But I don‘t know what to do” or “I can help tomorrow.” Assess their need, offer some help, and follow through right away.

3. Joyfully pay the price. Service to others always costs something—sometimes money, sometimes time, sometimes reputation, and almost always energy. See the price. Pay it anyway. And enjoy the return on investment.

4. Do not expect something in return. Remove the what’s-in-it-for-me question that motivates so many people today. Help with no expectation of repayment. And you will be repaid with joy and fulfillment in countless other ways.

Those who constantly strive for the top have misplaced their pursuits. But we don’t have to. We can rush today to experience the lasting happiness of helping others.

My comment is, more a question. In reviewing studies and books written on the subject of females lack of achieving orgasm and the percentage who still seem not to be able enjoy same, The question is why are we, especially men doing something to help. After some discussion with my wife, and with her guidance she was ab;e to have as many as four in a close proximate of time but not often. My wife in her work with other women in various organizations and in friendships and in our friendships with others found many of those she knew, felt they were only receptacles of semen. she and I wondered what we might do to change this condition, then she passed away with cancer. As I ponder the great joy she experienced during orgasm, What might I do to enable others to achieve that incredible joy as I observed her have a hand clenching, toe curling feeling of such joy course through her whole body as she would exclaim, yes, oh yes, hold it there, move just a little more, oh yes as she seemed to collapse in joy. As I think how do I talk to men, without getting reported to authorities or slapped by women for talking out of school? comments please.

I don’t agree that helping others is always a good route to happiness. I decided on this course as a philososphical and life goal a long time ago. I work with unemployed adults on training and motivation and have been doing so for seven years.

The exhaustion and pressure that come with my work far outweigh the benefits of altruism and the pleasure in helping people succeed. I often feel depleted by it rather than renewed, despite my pure desire to be of service and socially useful.

Great article. I find one of the primary requirements is being mindful. With mindfulness we notice things (needs of others) that we did not see before. It does give great satisfaction when we provide a service. However, even expectation of satisfaction of service has to be dropped to achieve the full benefit of what we do.

Following #4 is always the most difficult. Even after trying to avoid what’s-in-it-for-me question, and thinking that joy and fulfillment in other forms will come my way, the patience expected in waiting for that joy and fulfillment is sometimes just beyond me and my capabilities.

It’s so great to find the words I think (and feel) but could never find the right way to write them down. Thanks for posting this, and you’re completely right – helping others can truly bring us much happiness, and it’s so uplifting to make a difference in someone’s life, even if our acts are small. Sometimes, our own wounds can help others who have gone through the same bad experience, or at the very least give them a sense of hope and make their day brighter. This is especially true this time of year for those who have lost someone they loved deeply and must now face the holidays without the one person who meant everything to them. :(

I’ve decided to make ‘helping others’ one of my life goals, as part of the 7-life system. I’ve always enjoyed helping others, but I haven’t done it often, it’s only been spontaneous at times. I think for me, focusing on body language is an important thing which is closely connected to #1. I’m sure most people can tell when someone else is in pain, or unsure of something, it’s just about getting past that ‘observation’ stage and actually wanting to help.

It’s definitely not an easy thing helping others, it can take its toll as well, but it’s all worth it in the end if you’ve helped someone out right? :)

Well, not expecting anything in return, sure, it depends of the context. If you help people online or directly in the frame of your work, that’s fine. Helping your neighbors, all the time, but not getting anything in return, well, not good. You might not have a community. I believe in exchanges.

I lived my life with the basics only, my wife the same, never asking for more than we needed. We have been through 34 years together happily married. Now health issues for both of us have cropped up, her issue a failed diskectomy in her neck, that left her disabled. Mine being disabled most of my life due to age onset Parkinson’s disease, and now the bombshell. I have been allowed to slip through the cracks buy the best money grubber doctors in Las Vegas; who failed to inform me for 2 years that I was pre-cancer, and now the bigger meaner even more aggressive money machine ruthless docs @ UCLA for oral/nasal cancer are taking what little we have left. These people do not care what your tiny little issues are they just want MONEY bottom line. We have had to go the Los Angeles UCLA med center several times for me to be measured for a jaw replacement prosthesis, that our insurance will not cover, they claim it is not medically necessarily. So I guess eating is non needed also. This basically means due to my choice to remain humble and live small, I now will die early, & be burned in a cardboard box and my ashes placed in whatever urn my wife can afford. Sad note in a world with so many uncaring rich people. I even have to make a will so that my own wife will not have to fight Nevada probate for anything I have left in this cold and impossibly greedy world. We have always helped others, paid our tithings to our church, been sealed to each other and donated everything we could to disabled vets. Despite bankruptcy and huge medical bills we with selflessness have always help others in any way we could.

Your story is awful and has really touched me. I’m so so sorry you have been through all of that, you and your wife. I know that in God values and esteems those who are poor and broken in spirit, and you will be rewarded for faithful service, but sometimes that is not much consolation in the moment of deep suffering. If I had money you would have that, but as it is you have my prayers.

I think having time to help others is such a luxury. When I worked full-time I resented giving my time to others – I was too busy to even notice if people needed any help. Now because I work less I have more time for myself and to give to others. This is worth so much more than money or status.

A fun exercise: pick an attribute you want in your life (generosity, humility, gratitude…). Do something every day that expresses or embodies that attribute (generosity or Do not expect something in return: clean the water around the bathroom sink; dust when no one is home; toss your neighbor’s newspaper from the sidewalk to the porch; pay the toll for the car behind you. After 30 days, it’s yours. Writing it down daily is a great way to remember to do it.

‘offer faithful service’ has a nice ring to it, and sounds so much more rewarding than striving to acquire more money or prestige.

I loved your fourth suggestion–do not expect something in return. That’s probably the hardest thing on the list, but it seems like a good life practice and, paradoxically, very likely to give us much in return!

Great post.

I left my academic career in July because it made me unwell. Now, I’m working on a helpline for a human resources company, and I love it. I’m helping people in the corporate world, but still, it feels good to be able to help, and make their ‘striving’ a little easier. I have no desire to strive for the money that they earn. instead, I like helping them. My academic career was always focused on my competition with others around me, and not believing I was any good, destroyed my self-confidence. I’d had enough of trying to argue that my ideas were good ones.

It is so true what you say, and I’ve been going the extra mile at work, even though I get paid peanuts for it, because I want to. I spend the energy to make that one person’s day a little easier. it’s great.

I found “joyfully pay the price” insightful as well! If serving is a deep part of our being, my sense is that it feels less and less like paying a price and more and more like receiving.

#3 is something I’ve just been realizing.

So often I look for the best deal, the discount codes, the bargains…. and was in this mindset when a friend and I were talking about car repairs. She made an offhand remark about how “everyone has to earn a living” and that statement changed my view on paying for the needed repairs I had done at a local (small business) garage. Now I read your encouragement to pay for services joyfully. You’re exactly right. Thank you for that.

I have always had a hard time with #4 – do not expect something in return. Having been raised in a culture, that is always based on scarcity, as my parents were from one of lower castes in India, I was always told to squeeze every possible bit from everyone around me. Even though we now have enough, I still have remnants of my culture and caste with me, which means, I have to try harder in order to give without expecting anything back. Thank you for the post.

Meditate on love and abundance. Cultivate self compassion. When you have fed your soul it is easier to nourish others. Nothing wrong in being good to yourself. It can be practiced simultaneously with compassion for others. Thank you for your honesty
