All About PhD Psychology Entrances

Ph.D.

A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is the highest and most common academic degree. A Ph.D. degree normally takes between three and four years of full-time work to complete. To get it, you go through a tough program where you learn and do research. People get PhDs in lots of different subjects. Because a Ph.D. is all about research, people who want to get a Ph.D. have to do their own special research that helps them learn new things. They usually write a big paper called a dissertation to show what they discovered.

The Ph.D. exam also called the Doctor of Philosophy exam, is a really important step on the path to getting a Ph.D. degree. It’s like a big turning point in the Ph.D. program. Usually, it takes place after students have finished their required classes and sometimes done some early research. The main goal of this exam is to see how much a student knows, how well they understand their subject, and if they’re ready to do their own research in their chosen field.

An important aspect of the Ph.D. exam is its broad scope. This examination covers a lot of topics in the candidate’s field. Think of it as a comprehensive assessment, similar to a substantial test, aimed at determining whether the candidate possesses a deep understanding of the subject and has acquired the essential knowledge required to conduct independent research and have a significant impact within their field of expertise.

Basically, it’s a test to see how well they’ve mastered their academic subjects. Ph.D. exams usually include writing and speaking parts. For the writing part, they might have to write essays, make research plans, or answer questions from the committee. The oral component frequently involves defending the written work, discussing research plans, or fielding questions from a committee of faculty members who specialize in the candidate’s area of study.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Psychology Entrance

The requirements for admission to a Ph.D. program can vary significantly depending on the university, country, and field of study. However, here are some common eligibility criteria that are often require for admission to Ph.D. programs.

  • Candidates must have obtained 55% marks or Equivalent grades in the Master’s or M.Phil Degree in Psychology. This is applicable for all Ph.D. programs except in Engineering and Technology.
  • Students in the general category are required to have a minimum of 55% marks in their master’s degree.
  • In some cases, you may be required to attend an interview as part of the admission process. This interview may be in person or conducted online.
  • Usually, the preferences are given to candidates, who are holding experience in the field of research.

Types of Entrance Exams for PhD Psychology

There are two types of exams that allow candidates to get admission to Ph.D. after clearing these:

  • UGC NET/JRF
  • GRADUATE APTITUDE TEST IN ENGINEERING (GATE)

UGC NET /JRF

The UGC NET/JRF is a countrywide test that checks if Indian citizens are eligible to become Assistant Professors or obtain an Assistant Professor + Junior Research Fellowship at colleges and institutions in India. The University Grant Commission (UGC) has assigned the task of conducting the UGC-NET exam to the National Testing Agency (NTA). The UGC-NET exam occurs twice annually, usually in June and December. It includes two of two sections. The first part evaluates teaching and research abilities through a general paper. The second part focuses on the specific subject you are applying for, like Psychology. In total, candidates have to answer 150 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) within a three-hour time frame. The National Testing Agency (NTA) administers this exam using the Computer-Based Test (CBT) layout.

There is no maximum age limit for candidates applying for the UGC-NET exam to qualify for the Assistant Professor position. To qualify for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in the general category, candidates must be under 30 years. It’s worth noting that candidates from OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD category, the third gender, and women candidates can avail a significant relaxation of up to 5 years in the maximum age limit.

Role of National Testing Agency in the UGC NET Exam

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given the responsibility to the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct a test called UGC-NET . This test verifies if Indian candidates can become “Assistant Professors” or get a “Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor” job in Indian universities and colleges. The mode of UGC-NET is Computer-Based Test (CBT) Mode.

The performance of the candidates in both Paper I and Paper II of the UGC-NET Exam determines that the candidate will receive a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/or be qualified for an Assistant Professor job. If anyone only qualifies for the Assistant Professor post, they can’t get the JRF. Candidates, who meet the requirements for Assistant Professor jobs must follow the hiring rules of the universities.

General Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

GATE is a nationwide examination came into existence to evaluate a broad knowledge of engineering, technology, science, and humanities. Its primary target is to ascertain eligibility for admission to post-graduate level programs in participating institutions. Successfully passing the GATE exam is beneficial for attaining entry to master’s and direct doctoral programs in engineering, technology, humanities, and architecture. Each year, a different participating institution is tasked with conducting the GATE exam on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, which operates under the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. They conduct the GATE exam annually in February using a computer-based test (CBT) format, and the score remains valid for three (3) years from the date of the result announcement.

The participating institutions for GATE include the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Roorkee). In 2024, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, will be responsible for organizing GATE.

Apply to study psychology

Our admissions process depends on your educational level. When you’re ready to apply, follow the guidelines listed on this page.

Graduate (M.S./Ph.D.) programs

For application and admissions questions, please contact us by email:

gradpsy@iupui.edu

Undergraduate admissions

Our undergraduate students enter the School of Science as direct admits or through University College. Either way, you will follow the same degree requirements.

Graduate admissions

We look for applicants who have the potential to make important and creative contributions as psychologists. If you have a strong commitment to research, education, and a scientific perspective, we invite you to come to campus and meet with faculty. We encourage minorities and persons with disabilities to apply.

The application cycle for our Clinical and Addiction Neuroscience PhD programs opens September 1 and closes December 1.

Graduate programs hiatus

Applied Social & Organizational Psychology The ASOP Ph.D. program is going on hiatus and will not be admitting students.

Graduate program general requirements

To be admitted, you must have an undergraduate and graduate grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4-point scale.

You must also submit the following:

  • Addiction Neuroscience Ph.D. program— GRE scores are not required.
  • Applied Social & Organizational Psychology Ph.D. and Industrial/Organizational Psychology M.S. programs— GRE scores are not required.
  • Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program— the GRE test is optional for the Fall 2024 admission cycle. Applications with and without GRE scores will be given equal consideration.
  • TOEFL—If your native language is not English, you must demonstrate English proficiency.

Requirements by degree program:

Addiction neuroscience ph.d. (purdue degree).

Degrees are conferred through the Purdue University system. Entering students must meet the minimum admission requirements of the Graduate School of Purdue University and departmental requirements.

We seek talented and motivated persons who have an interest in the fields of behavioral and/or addiction neuroscience. A strong record of undergraduate research experience is given high priority in evaluating applicants.

All applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (you do not need a Master’s degree to apply). Majors in the life sciences (psychology, biology, or chemistry) are particularly encouraged to apply. Academic preparation and performance in the life sciences (e.g., experimental psychology and behavioral neuroscience; cell and systems biology; chemistry) are given high priority in considering candidates for admission.

Applied Social & Organizational Psychology Ph.D. (IU degree)

The ASOP Ph.D. program is going on hiatus and will not be admitting students.

The degrees are conferred through the Indiana University system, and entering students must meet the minimum admission requirements of the Graduate School of Indiana University as well as departmental requirements. Admission to the program is competitive. We currently are able to support approximately three students per cohort.

Prerequisites : Our program has a strong quantitative emphasis. It is highly unlikely that a student would be admitted without a course in statistics. In the rare circumstance that a student is admitted without meeting this prerequisite, the student must pass an approved statistics course prior to fall enrollment in the program.

Clinical Psychology Ph.D. (Purdue degree)

We are particularly interested in receiving applications from persons with a strong commitment to research, scholarly work, and a scientific perspective. Previous research experience or the completion of an undergraduate research project is seen as particularly positive (but not required). We value a broad liberal arts or science-based undergraduate education as the foundation for graduate study. We take a balanced approach to admission, and relative weaknesses in one area may be balanced by strengths in others. The clinical psychology program is committed to creating a diverse learning environment for its students; persons with disabilities and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Psychology GRE (NOTE: The Psychology GRE is strongly recommended, but not required.) The mean GRE score on the Advanced subtest in Psychology for students admitted to the program since 2007* is 704 (approximately 76th percentile).

*Per APA requirements, we provide information on the past 7 years.

Prerequisites : All applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. You do not need to major in psychology to apply; however, except in unusual circumstances, students admitted to the program are expected to have completed at least 15 credit hours in psychology prior to admission. Graduate courses will assume basic understanding in key areas. Students without preparation in these areas may be asked by their instructors to complete remedial activity prior to enrolling in the graduate course (e.g., reading an undergraduate text or taking an undergraduate course):

  • tests and measurement
  • human physiology or physiological psychology
  • abnormal psychology

Industrial / Organizational Psychology M.S. (Purdue degree)

Admission to this program is competitive. In the last five years, we have averaged 82 applications per year. We currently are able to support approximately three or four students per cohort.

Degree : Applicants preferably have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, but we will consider applicants with bachelor's degrees in similar areas with coursework in social science statistics and research methods).

Prerequisites : Our program has a strong quantitative emphasis. It is highly unlikely that a student would be admitted without a course in statistics. In the rare circumstance that a student is admitted without meeting this prerequisite, the student must pass an approved statistics course prior to Fall enrollment in the program.

Office of Postsecondary Education, Department of Education.

The Secretary announces the list of applicable CIP codes for qualifying graduate programs that have an extended earnings measurement period under the Financial Value Transparency and Gainful Employment regulations.

The list of CIP codes published in this notice apply to the first three award years that the Secretary calculates debt-to-earnings (D/E) rates and the earnings premium (EP) measure under subpart Q of 34 CFR part 668 . This period is established under the regulatory definition of Qualifying graduate program at § 668.2(b) as the “initial period,” and includes the 2023-2024, 2024-2025, and 2025-2026 award years.

On October 10, 2023, the U.S. Department of Education (Department) published final regulations on Financial Value Transparency (FVT) and Gainful Employment (GE), which become effective July 1, 2024 ( 88 FR 70004 ). These regulations, in part, (1) Establish a transparency framework to provide information about financial costs and benefits to students at nearly all academic programs at postsecondary institutions that are eligible to participate in the student assistance programs authorized under title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (HEA); and (2) Establish an eligibility framework for postsecondary educational programs designed to prepare students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation. Both the transparency and accountability frameworks rely upon D/E rates and an EP measure, as established under §§ 668.403 and 668.404 respectively, to assess debt and earnings outcomes for postsecondary program graduates.

The calculation of these metrics is based, in part, on the earnings of a cohort of graduates measured several years after program completion. The cohort period, as defined under § 668.2(b), is the set of award years used to identify a group of students who completed a program and whose debt and earnings outcomes are used to calculate the D/E rates and EP measure. The specific years included in the cohort period used in calculating D/E and EP metrics for a given program depend, in part, upon whether the program is a qualifying graduate program, as separately defined under § 668.2(b) Qualifying graduate program.

In developing the regulations, the Department recognized that certain graduate programs, mostly concentrated in medical and clinical fields, are associated with an initial period of depressed graduate earnings while graduates complete a required period of postgraduate clinical or residency work necessary to obtain a professional licensure, after which graduates realize significant earnings growth. For purposes of calculating the D/E rates and EP measure, the Department therefore extends the earnings measurement period for such qualifying graduate programs, when compared to other postsecondary programs. As an example, a two-year cohort period for most programs would be the third and fourth award years prior to the year of the most recent earnings data used in the calculation. In contrast, the two-year cohort period for a qualifying graduate program would be the sixth and seventh award years prior to the year of the earnings data, meaning that income is measured three years farther out after graduation for completers of such programs. These cohorts are used to measure earnings for both the standard and transitional reporting options under the FVT/GE regulations.

To be treated as a qualifying graduate program, a program must meet three specific and rigorous criteria. First, the program must be identified under the CIP code list below as being potentially eligible to be considered a qualified graduate program. Second, the program must be one whose students must complete a ”required postgraduation training program” to obtain licensure, which is a supervised training program that (1) requires the student to hold a degree in one of the qualifying fields and (2) must be completed before the student may be licensed by a State and board certified for professional practice or service. Third, the institution must attest that at least half of the program's graduates obtain licensure in a State where the postgraduation training requirements apply, and that, if necessary for licensure, the graduate program is accredited by an accrediting agency that meets State requirements. For the first criterion, paragraph (1)(i)(A) of the regulatory definition of a qualifying graduate program at § 668.2(b) provides a generalized list of occupations for qualifying graduate programs, which will apply to the first three award years the Department calculates the D/E rates and EP measure. The qualifying fields for this initial period include medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, clinical psychology, marriage and family counseling, clinical social work, and clinical counseling.

The National Center for Education Statistics provides a taxonomy of instructional program classifications and descriptions, most recently updated in 2020, known as CIP codes. For purposes of the FVT and GE regulations, specific programs offered by institutions are classified using a six-digit CIP code.

Consistent with this regulatory definition, the Secretary identifies the following graduate programs under their respective CIP codes as being potentially eligible to be considered a qualified graduate program, conditional on meeting all other required criteria:

As further described in the regulatory definition of a qualifying graduate program, the above list of eligible professions applies only to the initial three award years the Department Start Printed Page 53988 calculates the D/E and EP metrics. Following this initial period, and every three award years thereafter, the Secretary will publish an updated list of CIP codes that contains qualifying graduate programs, identifying fields that lead to a graduate degree for which graduates must complete postgraduate training programs averaging at least three years to complete and for which the Secretary determines that a majority of programs demonstrate outlier earnings growth.
