Chemistry is a branch of science that involves the study of the composition, structure and properties of matter. Often known as the central science, it is a creative discipline chiefly concerned with atomic and molecular structure and its change, for instance through chemical reactions.
Methylation enables high-voltage ether electrolytes for lithium metal batteries
Ether-based electrolytes are desired for lithium metal batteries owing to their low reduction potentials; however, they suffer from low anodic stability. Strategic methylation of ether solvents is shown to extend their electrochemical stability and facilitate the formation of LiF-rich interphases, enabling high-voltage lithium metal batteries while avoiding the use of fluorinated solvents.
Electrochemical concentration pumping in liquid–liquid extractions
Liquid–liquid extraction is an indirect separation technique requiring solvent regeneration, and if a back-extraction is needed, it typically reduces the concentration. Now, using an electrochemical reaction, the concentration can be pumped up to 16 times the feed concentration.

Methylation enables the use of fluorine-free ether electrolytes in high-voltage lithium metal batteries
Lithium metal batteries are an attractive energy storage technology, but their development relies on the complex interplay between the components’ chemical, physical and mechanical properties. Now, selective methylation of dimethoxyethane ether electrolytes is shown to improve electrolyte, electrode and solid–electrolyte interphase stabilities to enable high-performance 4.3 V lithium metal batteries.

In this thesis we have focused on studying modifications in the properties and reactivity of organic molecules coupled to cavities hosting confined electromagnetic modes. The aim of these works is to develop a fundamental theory motivated by the various experimental demonstrations of polaritonic chemistry achieved in recent years, both for excited-state molecular processes and thermally-driven ground-state reactions.

100s of Free Chemistry Dissertation Topics & Ideas
Published by Owen Ingram at January 2nd, 2023 , Revised On August 18, 2023
It is not easy to come up with intriguing and compelling chemistry dissertation topic ideas , especially if one is juggling multiple subjects or looking at adjacent fields simultaneously. Students often choose simple and familiar topics for their dissertation papers, but that is not always effective since excellent academic papers are distinctive.
From mode reactions to experimental procedures, the selected chemistry topic should be analytical and scientific in nature. It is essential to avoid a topic that is too specific, intricate, or broad. For instance, students can explore issues related to environmental chemistry or chemical reagents. The student should ensure that the chosen subject has a clearly defined emphasis.

In recent years, flexible wearable electronics have been widely used in smart wearable devices, micro-robots, and sensors due to their seamless integration with the human body and long-term monitoring capabilities. Hydrogels with good biocompatibility, versatility, and tunable mechanical properties compared to elastomers are becoming increasingly prominent in flexible electronics. Among them, conductive nanocomposite hydrogels have been extensively studied for their combination of multiple materials, resulting in higher elasticity, superior mechanical properties, and better physical/chemical/biological/electrical properties. Herein, we review the recent research advances in conductive nanocomposite hydrogels for sensor applications. First, we discuss the characteristics, design strategies, and applications of conductive nanocomposite hydrogels with different conductive compositions, including those based on carbon-based nanomaterials, polymer nanofillers, metal nanofillers, and the emerging 2D materials MXenes. Second, the properties of conductive nanocomposite hydrogels are described in detail, such as their mechanical properties, adhesion properties, self-healing properties, and anti-freezing properties. Finally, the design of future nanocomposite conducting hydrogel sensors is presented with their perspectives and challenges.

Chemistry researchers modify solar technology to produce a less harmful greenhouse gas
Researchers in the UNC-Chapel Hill Chemistry Department are using semiconductors to harvest and convert the sun's energy into high-energy compounds that have the potential to produce environmentally friendly fuels.
In the paper, "Methyl Termination of p-Type Silicon Enables Selective Photoelectrochemical CO 2 Reduction by a Molecular Ruthenium Catalyst," published in ACS Energy Letters , the researchers explain how they use a process called methyl termination that uses a simple organic compound of one carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms to modify the surface of silicon, an essential component in solar cells, to improve its performance in converting carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide using sunlight.
The research was supported by the Center for Hybrid Approaches in Solar Energy to Liquid Fuels (CHASE), an Energy Innovation Hub funded by the DOE Office of Science, and informed by a process called artificial photosynthesis, which mimics how plants use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide into energy-rich molecules. Carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas contributing to climate change. By converting it to carbon monoxide, which is a less harmful greenhouse gas and a building block for more complex fuels, the researchers said they can potentially mitigate the environmental impact of carbon dioxide emissions.
"One challenge with solar energy is that it's not always available when we have the highest need for it," said Gabriella Bein, the paper's first author and a Ph.D. student in chemistry. "Another challenge is that renewable electricity, like that from solar panels, doesn't directly provide the raw materials needed for making chemicals. Our goal is to store solar power in the form of liquid fuels that can be used later."
The researchers used a ruthenium molecular catalyst with a piece of chemically modified silicon, called a photoelectrode, that facilitated the conversion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide using light energy without producing unwanted byproducts, such as hydrogen gas, making the process more efficient for converting carbon dioxide into other substances.
Jillian Dempsey, a co-author of the paper and Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor, said that when they ran experiments in a solution filled with carbon dioxide, they found that they could produce carbon monoxide at 87% efficiency, meaning the system using the modified silicon photoelectrodes is comparable or better than systems using traditional metal electrodes, such as gold or platinum.
In addition, the silicon photoelectrode used 460 millivolts less electrical energy to produce a reaction than one would have using only electricity. Dempsey called this significant, because the process uses direct light harvesting to supplement or offset the energy required to drive the chemical reaction that converts carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide.
"What's interesting is normally silicon surfaces make hydrogen gas instead of carbon monoxide, which makes it harder to produce it from carbon dioxide," said Dempsey, who is also deputy director of CHASE. "By using this special methyl-terminated silicon surface, we were able to avoid this problem. Modifying the silicon surface makes the process of converting CO 2 into carbon monoxide more efficient and selective, which could be really useful for making liquid fuels from sunlight in the future."
Bein and Dempsey collaborated on the research with Professor Alexander Miller; Eric Assaf, a former graduate student in the department; Senior Research Scientist Renato Sampaio; Madison Stewart, an undergraduate chemistry major; and Senior Research Scientist Stephen Tereniak.
CHASE is made up of seven different institutions, headquartered at UNC-Chapel Hill, and received $40 million in funding from the Department of Energy in 2020 to accelerate fundamental research on ways to produce fuels from sunlight.

Injury Report, Updated Odds (4/2): Oklahoma City Thunder at Philadelphia 76ers
The Thunder takes on the 76ers in Philadelphia on national television.
- Author: Kade Kimble
In this story:
With the Oklahoma City Thunder having just eight remaining games in the regular season, they continue riding their East Coast road-trip, taking on the Philadelphia 76ers to follow up a close game against the New York Knicks on Sunday.
Now, the Thunder is taking on a 76ersn team that is No. 8 in the Eastern Conference. They've fallen during Joel Embiid's injury, though his return is on the horizon.
For the Thunder, they're alone with the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, but a loss would tie them up with the Denver Nuggets. A win would be huge as they've got an opportunity to close out the season with the top record in the conference.
Injury Report
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, OUT (Quad)
Jalen Williams, OUT (Ankle)
Ousmane Dieng, OUT (G League)
Adam Flagler, OUT (G League)
Keyontae Johnson, OUT (G League)
Olivier Sarr, OUT (G League)
Joel Embiid, Available (Meniscus)
Tyrese Maxey, Questionable (Hip)
De'Anthony Melton, OUT (Back)
Robert Covington, OUT (Knee)
Ricky Council, OUT (G League)
Jeff Dowtin, OUT (G League)
Terquavion Smith, OUT (G League)
After being ruled out on the injury report, Joel Embiid has been made active for the matchup. He'll be able to take advantage of an injured Thunder team to make a statement of a return on national TV.
For the Thunder, missing Jalen Williams certainly hurts -- especially after his steller performance in the Madison Square Garden a couple of nights ago. Adding Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's injury makes things even more difficult, and it'll be huge if he can go during the contest.
Evidently, it's more important for those two star players to get healthy ahead of the playoffs than taking a victory over the shorthanded 76ers.
Updated Odds
Becuase of Embiid's injury, the Thunder opened as a 5.5-point favorite. With recent injury news, the Thunder is just a 2.5-point favorite. They're still the favored team, and this would be a huge victory if they can pull it off without Williams being healthy.
