So you’ve decided to become a college professor. This means you get to dress up in ancient garb, smiling munificently during graduation at students about to embark on their rewarding careers and lives. And if you are lucky, you get to do this again, and again, and again—in my case, for over 25 years. Most of today’s students were not even roaming the planet when I began teaching, but despite the fact that I’m teaching a new generation wired to its various technological devices, some of the basic principles of what makes a successful professor haven’t changed. Technologies will come and go (anyone remember Betamax? How about reel-to-reel movie projectors?), but the thirst for knowledge will not—and that goes not only for students, but also for those of us trying to teach others what we already know and what we continue to learn. Ideally, people who teach college students do so because they consider it to be their vocation. I’m not referring to “Vocational Education,” which has its own, state-specific definition, but rather the lower case “vocational education,” or as John Dewey envisioned it, one’s life calling. This chapter is about how I found my life calling and how others can as well.

How to build a "culture of vocation" in the Church by taking seriously and attending to the unique, personal vocation of every person. Not only their state in life; not only their call to holiness (which is universal); not only their work -- but their PERSONAL CALLING, the unique way that they live out these other "aspects" of calling. This paper goes into how we can do that in an educational system and through a mentorship process that stresses the importance of five factors: Personal Encounter, Language, Wonder, Incarnation, and Creativity. This was a seminar paper written and presented for a PhD course seminar in pedagogy in early 2022; I advance the argument that vocations are to be identified with singular virtues or dispositions at their core (assuming that vocations all ought to be virtuous), and that the teaching vocation is chiefly associated with what ancients and Christians called studiositas; the discussion touches many topics related to education, teaching, students, careers, and the like, but the paper puts forward a logical argument for the position. The paper was to be robust, but not overly technical, and so my style and documentation follows that directive. I post it here as it may especially be helpful for graduate students thinking about their futures.

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Teaching as discerned vocation in urban Catholic schools has the potential to provide a far-reaching, integrative space for enacting the Universal Apostolic Preferences. This research explores the reflections of thirty-one novice teachers, enrolled in the Urban Catholic Teacher Corps (UCTC), a Jesuit university program in the northeast. This program supports the development and formation of novice teachers through graduate education, living in community, full-teaching responsibilities in an urban Catholic school, mentoring, coaching, and professional development. Teachers completed an online interview that elicited responses about what it means and the factors that contribute to leading a life of meaning and purpose. Responses illustrated intentionality and planning with the aim of leading a life that was beyond-the-self. Finally, the Universal Apostolic Preferences of “Walking with the Excluded” and “Journey with Youth to Create a Hopefilled Future” resonated in all responses. Findings suggest that teaching as a discerned vocation in urban Catholic schools offers a far-reaching space for enacting integrative Universal Apostolic Preferences as teachers commit to taking up this work as vocation. Furthermore, the space serves as a model for evangelizing students, families, and communities to take up this work.

Emphasis on professional work of teachers at the primary or secondary level tends to focus on autonomy and independence in determining teaching prac-tices (Gambell, 1995; Henderson, 1992) and even on rights in curriculum development and delivery (Chan, 1995). Concerns over "deprofessionaliza-tion" likewise center on the loss of autonomy ...

Recent discussions about the relationship between education and finding meaning in life have tended to focus on institutional and curricular matters and, as a consequence, have sidelined the importance of the vocation of teaching.
