People often give a short shrift to cover letters, or they spend time writing one and don't update it, and asset management professionals are no exception. However, together with your resume, cover letters create a hiring manager's first impression of a candidate, so it needs to be as close to perfect as possible.

One slip-up – or submitting a clean yet bland cover letter that makes hiring managers say "meh" – could cost you a chance at landing an interview. Here are the mistakes that asset management professionals should avoid when crafting a cover letter, as well as tips for success.

1. Don’t use a template

Why? Because cover letters written using a template feel stale and impersonal. Feel free to use a template as a checklist to make sure you aren't missing a key element, but don't be afraid to freshen up the format and make it your own.

“If you send a template-based cover letter email, it feels like a template,” says Stacy Havener, CEO of Havener Capital Partners. “People know that this is what you’re sending out to every single job you’re applying to. How many resumes and cover letters do you think they’re getting?

"It doesn’t feel good,” she said.

A cookie-cutter cover letter may cause hiring managers to assume that this job wasn’t even important enough for you to take the time to write a personalized note.

2. Solve a problem 

It's pretty simple: People want to hire and work with problem-solvers.

“I have a problem, and if you can tell me how you can help me solve it, that’s a very good cover letter,” says Havener.

In asset management, in many cases it’s mostly about your numbers, but candidates’ command of the English language is important too, regardless of which role you’re applying for. Tell a story about yourself and how you can help the firm that's recruiting.

3. Show some personality

A cover letter is asset management professionals’ best chance to give decision-makers colour about who they are and how they are going to help the hiring firm.

If you put yourself in the shoes of the person who’s receiving the cover letter, assume they’re getting a lot of them. You can imagine that reading one after the other gets old pretty quickly. You don’t want to be unprofessional, but show some personality and don’t write a boring cover letter.

“Each firm has a vibe or a personality, so if you write a cover letter without anything cool or funny, people reading it don’t really know if you’re a robot or a human, and it doesn’t stand out,” Havener says.

If you read about a job or a firm and something resonates with you personally, share that. You can even include a short anecdote to give the hiring manager or recruiter a feel for who you are as a person.

4. Keep it short

Always remember, your cover letter is most likely going to be read by a busy person with a very short attention span. Therefore, keep it short and specific.

“People in the asset management space are time compressed, so writing an overly-lengthy cover letter can actually disqualify you,” says Reshma Ketkar, director and head of the long-only investment professionals recruiting practice at Glocap Search.

In the asset management industry, if a cover letter has been requested, keep it to two paragraphs, mentioning why you’re interested in the role, why you think you're qualified and what qualities and experience you have that are unique.

When it comes to cover letters, some hiring managers and recruiters see being verbose or boasting as a bad thing.

As an extreme example, Ketkar once worked with an asset management professional who, in lieu of a cover letter, created a 45-page PowerPoint presentation all about himself.

“He thought ‘Wow, this is awesome,’ but it really was not,” she said. “I had to beg the candidate not to send it.”

Including a 25-page stock pitch or research reports that have not been requested is also a no-no.

Instead, think about the hiring manager or recruiter and what they want to see given time constraints, and write a cover letter that is articulate, digestible and useful without being onerous for the hiring manager to read.

Be concise and include only the most relevant details about your background that specifically relate to the job in question.

5. Never share proprietary details

Sharing proprietary details about a previous firm to make yourself look good demonstrates a lack of good judgement, and it could get you in hot water if you signed a non-disclosure agreement, says to Roy Cohen, career counselor, executive coach and the author of The Wall Street Professional’s Survival Guide .

6. Don’t apologise for anything on your resume

Especially if you’ve moved around a lot, never use the cover letter to explain why you’ve made all of the moves or to apologise, because the underlying message is that you did something wrong.

“That’s not the impression you want to make,” Cohen says. “Don’t include any justification for leaving a former employer in the cover letter – leave that for the interview.

“If you’ve moved around, focus on either the most recent position, or summarize your collective experience,” he said.

Hi, I am a second year undergrad student planning to apply for summer internships in Asset Management (Investment Management). Being new to the process, I need some guidance regarding the cover letter. In addition, I wasn't able to find good cover letters online due to which I am not able to get an idea about what to write. If possible please share some of you ample cover letter and if you have any tips that would be excellent!

I would recommend checking out the mergers & inquisitions and wall street oasis cover letters. Generally, cover letters can hurt more then they can help, so make sure you have zero spelling/grammar errors. You may also want to check out your schools or other target schools career centres for examples.

During our Client Analyst program, you'll receive an overview of how our Asset Management teams work with global clients through industry-leading products, advice and service.

Through our Product Analyst program, you'll begin developing your industry expertise as part of one of our asset teams. We'll give you an in-depth look at how we manage assets and create products for some of the world's largest investors.

You’ll need to have excellent communication and presentation skills, strong quantitative skills, a passion for investing, exceptional organizational skills and the ability to multitask. Having a background in financial accounting, financial analysis or mathematics is a plus.

On-the-job experience

Over the summer you’ll learn how our teams research, analyze and develop investment strategies and models for institutions, financial intermediaries and individual investors around the globe, working alongside some of the top minds in the field.

The program begins with a three- to five-day orientation to introduce you to the firm and our business. As the summer progresses, you’ll attend senior speaker events and skills-building workshops and enjoy networking opportunities.

Our Summer Analyst program can serve as a launch pad for your career. Interns who successfully complete the program may receive an offer for full-time employment.

Client Analyst:  You'll have the opportunity to be aligned with a team in Funds Management, Institutional Sales or Marketing.

Our Funds Management team delivers insights and investment solutions to intermediaries, including financial advisors, broker-dealer firms, and insurance companies.

Our Institutional Sales business helps pension funds, defined contribution plans, endowments and foundations, insurance companies and sovereign wealth funds with insights and investment solutions.

During your time in Marketing, you'll learn effective branding, advertising, communications and research strategies to enhance the client experience.

Product Analyst:  You'll have the opportunity to be aligned a team in Alternatives, Beta/ETF Strategies, Equities, Fixed Income, Liquidity or Multi-Asset Solutions.

Our Alternatives team manages hedge fund portfolios, builds and maintains private equity portfolios, and develops innovative real estate investment solutions.

As part of our Beta/ETF Strategies team, you'll build specialized index and enhanced index products, and work on portfolio implementation capabilities across asset classes.

The Equities team manages a broad range of equity investment strategies globally with dedicated portfolio managers, research analysts and traders.

The Fixed Income group provides debt solutions, including investment grade, high yield and emerging market debt.

Our Liquidity team provides short-term fixed income solutions across a range of currencies to corporate and financial institutional investors via funds and separately managed accounts.

As part of our Multi-Asset Solutions, you'll develop investment solutions for clients using capital markets, asset allocation, portfolio construction and risk management.

If you are applying for an internship, you will likely have to submit a cover letter as part of your application. Your cover letter should be tailored to the specific internship for which you're applying and include examples from your work, academic, and extracurricular experiences.

When writing a cover letter for an internship position, it's important to share your most relevant qualifications with the hiring manager. When you don't have much (or any) formal work experience, you can include school activities, volunteering, educational programs, and other learning experiences.

Use Business Letter Format. Use proper business letter format when sending a cover letter by mail. Include your contact information at the top, the date, and the contact information for the employer. Be sure to provide a proper salutation, and sign your name at the bottom. If you are sending the  cover letter via email , you do not have to include the contact information at the top. Instead, place this as part of your email signature at the end of your letter.

Customize Your Cover Letter. It's important to write a  unique cover letter  for each internship for which you apply. Highlight skills and abilities you have that relate to the specific internship listing. The main emphasis of your cover letter should be convincing the reader that you will be an asset as an intern.

Provide Specific Examples. If you mention that you have a particular skill or ability in your cover letter, be sure to prove this with a specific example from your past work, academic, or extracurricular experience.

Add Keywords to Your Letter. One way to individualize your letter is to use  keywords  from the internship listing. For example, if the listing says the intern needs to have excellent “time management skills,” include an example of how you have demonstrated time management skills in the past. You'll be able to show the hiring manager that they have the skills you are seeking.

Emphasize Your Academic Experience. In the letter, you can mention academic experience, if applicable. Especially if you have limited work experience, you might use examples from school to demonstrate that you have particular skills. For example, if the internship requires you to work as part of a team, provide an example of a successful team project you worked on during one of your college courses.

Include Extracurricular Experiences. You can also include details about your relevant experience from extracurricular activities or  volunteer work . For example, a reporter for a college newspaper can point to interviewing and writing skills; a history of volunteering at a shelter can provide an example of strong  interpersonal  and  organizational skills .

Mention How You Will Follow Up. Towards the end of your letter, say how you will  follow up  with the employer. You might say that you will call the office to follow up in about a week (don't follow up any sooner). However, do not include this if the internship listing specifically says not to contact the office.

Carefully Proofread and Edit. Be sure to thoroughly proofread your cover letter for spelling and grammar errors. Many internships are very competitive, and any error can hurt your chances of getting an interview. Also, avoid using too many words to convey your information and intent. Keep your points brief and targeted.

Who are we hiring?

The Madison Square Garden Digital Asset Management Specialist is a skilled technical operator who has an understanding of workflows and technology. He/she/they main objective is to resolve any issues that could impact on-time delivery, protection, and retrieval of digital assets; and to support the Director, of Digital Assets Management on special projects. Additionally, they act as leaders and change agents in the operation, supporting marketing production on new workflows and technology.

This position will also work directly with the marketing production team to provide strategic recommendations, acting as leaders and change agents in the marketing environment. The Specialist will play a key role in improving access to the current digital asset management system to improve searchability; provide database training to staff as needed; and support the digitization and protection of assets. Finally, this person will be responsible for supervising the fulfillment of the marketing team’s digital assets needs as it pertains to edit prep, asset retrieval, archiving, and distribution.

As a Student Associate, you will gain valuable experience that will be applicable throughout your career. While participating in the Student Associate Program, students will have the opportunity to work with our employees to get a full understanding of the business. We also provide additional learning and development opportunities through an executive speaker series, mentorship program, career development workshops, and other social events.

Specialist Asset Management:

• Catalog assets in the digital management system; assess the long-term value of assets.
• Provide support for digital delivery applications and workflows.
• Monitor and maintain available workspace on in-house shared storage.
• Manage file archiving in the working environment & long-term storage.
• Documenting and creating SOP for any newly added procedures in the marketing environment.
• Comprehensively track & reconcile technical issues.
• Manage digital assets being added to storage, ensuring end users have enough working space.
• Facilitate consolidation of hard drives to cloud storage or local storage.

What do you need to succeed?

Knowledge & Skills:

• Experience working in a creative production environment.
• Knowledge of computer systems and workflows.
• Must have experience with digital media workflows including but not limited to transcoding and digital file delivery.
• Must have experience with digital media files and codecs- QT,MXF,DNXHD & ProRes.
• Strong communication skills and ability to interface with multiple departments, clients and vendors.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience working in a corporate environment.

Requirements:

• Must be available to work 21-35 hours a week.
• Must be available from early October- end of April.
• Must be enrolled as a rising junior, senior, or graduate student.
• Must have a GPA of 3.2 or above.
