Themed “Building a more Secure Nigeria using Technology”, the competition received dazzling thoughts written in a maximum of 1000 and 1500 words respectively for the junior and senior categories respectively of how Nigeria can explore technology to tackle the menace of insecurity confronting her.

“At SystemSpecs, we are firm believers in the Nigeria project and strongly advocate that young Nigerians be given a chance to make input into issues of strategic national importance. Our annual essay competition helps us to feel the pulse of the younger generation while creating the consciousness that they have a role to play in national progress,” said Deremi Atanda, SystemSpecs’ Executive Director in charge of corporate strategy.

Atanda also acknowledged the support received from leading bodies within Nigeria’s education sector for the 2021 competition, most notably the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS).

The judging process that produced the winners was thorough, as all entries were stripped of the identities of the entrant and sent round to judges for multiple assessments, after which top entries were shortlisted and independently reviewed by the panel of judges.

Speaking on behalf of the judges , Adedoyin Jaiyesimi, Chief Communications Consultant at The Comms Avenue, noted that the quality of the essays reflected the quality of Nigeria’s current educational system.

“While a majority of the entries reflected good thinking and impressive research, a number also suggested that participants did not pay enough attention to instructions and also lacked experienced guidance.

“Nonetheless, on behalf of other distinguished members of the panel of judges this year, I commend everyone who sent in an entry expressing their thoughts on the Nigerian project, especially how technology could be leveraged to return the country to a fully secure and peaceful state” , he said.

Jaiyesimi added that the judges, who themselves are influencers of national policies, would work with SystemSpecs to ensure that the bright ideas expressed in the essays are curated for implementation exploring different partnership models.

Entries from the brilliant young minds who will participate will generate original ideas and prepare Nigerian children to take a technology-first approach to tackle national challenges.

Divided into two categories – Junior (for children aged 9-12 years) and Senior (for children aged 13-16 years), participants in the competition this year are to write essays on the topic, “Improving the Quality of Education in Nigeria through Technology.” Entries are to be submitted through the competition portal, www.systemspecs.com.ng/2022essay , from March 21, 2022, till April 20, 2022.

While entries into the junior category should not exceed 1,000 words, entries into the senior category should be a maximum of 1,500 words. Entries must be participants’ original ideas, devoid of plagiarism, written in English and endorsed by an accredited school official, parent, or legal guardian.

According to Jenny Awa, Community Manager, uLesson Education, the collaboration is just at the right time when Nigeria needs a shift in the education sector to be at par with global standards and prepare children for a technology-driven future.

Adding that uLesson Coding School teaches children between the ages 4-18 how to build games, websites and Apps using a global standard curriculum, she said the top three winners in each category of the competition will have access to high-quality and interactive e-learning experiences and can choose any certificate course of their choice.

“ uLesson Coding School is always on the lookout for opportunities to give back to society, and this collaboration presents such in a unique way. We are glad to work with SystemSpecs on this project to contribute to the birth of the next generation of young tech titans that would create enduring, mind-blowing technology solutions,” Jenny said.

Oluwasegun Adesanya, Head, Shared Services, SystemSpecs stated that the SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition in 2020 was to provide an opportunity for students across Nigeria to share fresh, bright, and original ideas capable of transforming our country positively.

“This edition of the competition is special. To this end, we have collaborated with uLesson Coding School to equip participants with hands-on relevant technology skills that unleash their creative minds,” he added.

The school that produces the top winning participants in junior and senior categories would be rewarded with 10 and 20 high-capacity personal computers, respectively, aside from other benefits, including implementing an end-to-end electronic funds collection and payment for the school.

The first-place winner of the competition in each category of this year’s edition of the competition will respectively receive a high capacity laptop, a topnotch headphone, free 3-month coding course at uLesson Coding School, monthly 10-gigabyte internet data for one year, branded travel suite case, a unique keepsake hoodie, a thermal flask, and school bag.

SystemSpecs Awards Winners of Essay Competition

SystemSpecs Awards Winners of Essay Competition

SystemSpecs, Africa’s leading financial and human capital technology firm, has honoured about 2000 young Nigerians between ages 9 and 16 for daring to dream and articulately sharing in writing, their vision of a Nigeria of their dreams powered by innovative technology.

The firm has also opened its doors to participants for internship and other placements.

At a recent online event, SystemSpecs bestowed the honour on all entrants in the 2020 edition of its Children’s Day Essay Competition, specially recognised the top three participants, and admitted top 10 participants into the Honour Roll in the junior and senior categories. The event, which also featured the official presentation of prizes, was attended by participants, their parents, wards, well-wishers, SystemSpecs management staff and the general public.

In his comment, 15 years old Kalu Derrick Ugochukwu of Fosla Academy, Karshi, Abuja who came top in the senior category appreciated the opportunity and expressed his delight at emerging as the overall winner in the senior category.

“I thank the Almighty God for making this recognition come my way and at this time,” said Ugochukwu. He also thanked his parents and teachers for spurring him on, and SystemSpecs for organising the competition at a time many students longed for such avenues to task their mental capacity.

In his speech, 11 years old Onuoha-Okoro David of St Anthony Grammar School (Private) in Esure, Ijebu Imushin, Ogun state, who emerged first in junior category appreciated God for the inspiration, his parents for the support as well as the organisers of the competition.

Managing Director, SystemSpecs, John Obaro, said: “Whether yours emerged among the top entries or not, you are a winner. You have made a major leap, added to your feathers and positioned yourself for greater success. You have shown that technology is not only relevant in personal and corporate life, but also in the life of a nation.

Obaro added that SystemSpecs was receptive to admitting the Honour Roll winners and other participants into the organisation for internships and other placements when they are ready for such opportunity.

While noting some of the general areas of improvement observed during the evaluation of the entries, Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata speaking on behalf of the 2020 evaluation panel, noted that he was glad that the competition provided insight into some of the challenges within the education system in Nigeria which need to be speedily tackled.

“It is important that people realise that education is a lifestyle and not a means to merely pass,” Agbata added.

Young Nigerians more than 500 schools in twenty-nine states and the FCT had sent in about 2,000 entries within a two-week window to participate in the 2020 edition of the competition with the theme, “Nigeria of my Dream: Making it Happen with Technology.” The SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition is part of the organisation’s corporate social responsibility of contributing to capacity development in Nigeria for the attainment of an all-round prosperous country.

Bruce Drysdale 5th-grade student advances to national finals in DAR's essay contest

systemspecs essay competition winners

Bruce Drysdale fifth grader Lia Martinonis has advanced to the national finals in the Daughters of the American Revolution 2024 Essay Contest, and each time her essay has advanced, her family has celebrated with a cake.

She is anxiously hoping for more cake. Martinonis is one of eight fifth-grade finalists in the nation, and so far, she's won three awards for her essay — one at the local level, one at the state level and the latest for the Southeastern Division.

"I am unbelievably proud. I have felt both shocked and pleased each time I learned that I had won," she said.

And there's prize money involved: $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place. The winners will be recognized at the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Continental Congress, which is being held June 26-30 in Washington, D.C.

The topic for the contest was “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Essay writers were asked to imagine they were a newspaper reporter for The Philadelphia Times on May 14, 1897, and the newspaper's editor asked them to attend and report on the first public performance of John Philip Sousa’s new march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” The students were to tell about Sousa’s life and the story behind the song.

Lia was with her family on April 20 in Durham to receive the state award, her mother, Andrea, said.

"This essay contest has been an incredible experience for Lia. My daughter aspires to be a writer when she grows up," Andrea Martinonis said. "This opportunity has given her the confidence to pursue that dream. Lia researched the essay subject, learned about American history, honed her writing skills, and read her speech to a large audience at the initial award ceremony.

"As an educator, I couldn't be more pleased that DAR sponsors this contest, encouraging students to write essays and learn about our nation's past. As a parent, I am thrilled that my daughter chooses to spend her free time reading and writing and that her interests and skills are being recognized."

More: North Henderson student one of four grand prize winners in national essay contest

Lia said her teacher, April Summey, assigned the essay contest to her class.

"I remember being frustrated when drafting my essay, but now I am so glad my hard work paid off. I still cannot believe this is all happening," Lia Martinonis said.

This part of her essay describes Sousa talking about composing his new march:

"...Sousa said that he composed the song in his head on his return to America as he grieved the death of his beloved band manager, David Blakely. Sousa said, “In a kind of dreamy way, I used to think over old days at Washington when I was leader of the Marine Band…when we played at all public functions, and I could see the Stars and Stripes flying from the flagstaff.” He also stated, “And that flag of ours became glorified… And to my imagination it seemed to be the biggest, grandest flag in the world, and I could not get back under it quick enough.”

More: Apple Valley Middle student one of four grand prize winners in national contest

Summey called Lia a phenomenal, gifted student who "always goes above and beyond."

"She thrives on a challenge and is an avid learner. Her contagious curiosity shines brightly as she lights up upon acquiring new knowledge," Summey said. "Every year, my fifth grade students work on the DAR essay. They are given a prompt and required to read multiple primary and secondary sources about the topic in order to prepare. I am very passionate about the contest, because it helps students learn history and get excited about it."

On Sunday, April 7th, I attended the 10th annual Holocaust Reflection Contest awards ceremony held at Nova Southeastern University’s Alvin Sherman Library. The statewide contest is sponsored by the Holocaust Learning and Education Fund, Inc. at NSU.

Craig R. Weiner, President of the Holocaust Learning and Education Fund, Inc. and the curator of the Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection and Resource Center at Nova Southeastern University, expressed the purpose of the contest.

“The Holocaust Reflection Contest was created as a means by which to have many thousands of students learn about the Holocaust and to reflect on what they learn through their research of survivor testimonies. While classroom instruction is obviously vital, a contest such as this is far more effective in reaching so many more students through the use of the internet and giving multitudes of students the opportunity to learn and have the possibility of recognition for their outstanding entries. It’s so important for students and teachers to reflect and think about this history rather than just memorizing dates, names and events. This is the reason we ask students to read survivor testimonies. By reading them, or watching videos of survivors explaining their personal experiences makes us all think about what we just heard or saw and reflect on it. This is essentially experiential learning, which in our view, is far more impactful to the student than simply reading a history lesson.”

The contest drew middle and high school students from across Florida to study the testimonies of Holocaust survivors and reflect on them through poetry, essays, artwork and digital storytelling. The contest provides a creative opportunity to honor and remember the millions of victims who died in the Holocaust.

More than 1,300 student submissions were received this year and the winners are:
