Submitting dissertations and assignments

At dissertation time, we often get questions relating to preparation of documents and submitting online. Here are some of the things you can do to avoid problems previous students have had with submitting dissertations or assignments.

Preparing your document, including converting a document to PDF

Many dropboxes specify that a PDF must be provided.  Dissertations can be long documents, but try to avoid bloat!  Sometimes a document is too big to be converted into a PDF.

  • Reduce the size of your images, especially photos, before putting them in the document, a 10-MB high-quality image is often not needed, so save a smaller version for inserting in your text.  Save the big images for where you really need them. Here is some advice on    Reducing file size by optimising images
  • Make sure your PDF is created in the correct way so that Turnitin can read the text. Check out our helpful advice on Recommended ways to create PDF files for submitting assignments and dissertations
  • If there are Scanning handwritten work for submission
  • If your document is still too big to be converted into a PDF, then convert it in sections, and combine the PDFs into one document last thing. Here is advice on Combining multiple files into a single PDF
  • You can use this PDF converter from Nuance (Windows) to help you

Common errors that cause Turnitin to reject assignments

Check your document is

  • A file of less than 100MB,
  • no more than 40 pages
  • has a filename that’s under 40 characters
  • Is comprised of at least 20 words of readable text (see above for how to create a PDF that’s machine readable).

See the Turnitin and Moodle Assignment Checklist for  more information on how to structure your document.

Academic Integrity and Turnitin

You should be familiar by now with the concepts around academic integrity and the actions you should take to avoid plagiarism.

There is some basic guidance in the University’s NOOC Academic Integrity: Values & Actions (UNUK) (self-enrol Moodle module).  To ensure Turnitin will accept your document and that you’re familiar with the submissions processes, you can run your document through the dropbox in Test Your Text  (self-enrol Moodle module). This will not add the paper to the database so will not match when you submit your assignment or dissertation for real.

Finally: don’t forget to submit your document to the dropbox in your module in good time!

  • Dissertation or thesis title
  • The type of document (e.g., dissertation, research paper )
  • The department and institution

A typical example of a thesis title page looks like this:

Thesis title Page

The title page of your thesis or dissertation should include your name, department, institution, degree program, and submission date.

The title page of your thesis or dissertation goes first, before all other content or lists that you may choose to include.

Usually, no title page is needed in an MLA paper . A header is generally included at the top of the first page instead. The exceptions are when:

  • Your instructor requires one, or
  • Your paper is a group project

In those cases, you should use a title page instead of a header, listing the same information but on a separate page.

Undergraduate dissertation or final year research project.

A dissertation is a type of academic report, but unlike many other assignments you might have, you choose the subject, and it usually has a larger word limit (5,000 - 10,000 words) so can be the biggest piece of writing that you do for your degree.  With a dissertation you choose your topic, you select the methodology used, and you usually have to undertake a literature review.  Many students find this very challenging - don't worry though, we can help:

Postgraduate Masters Dissertation or Research Project

Not everybody has to do a dissertation or research project at undergraduate level, but a Masters degree usually has some sort of extended individual project.  If you have done a project like this before, there are some differences from undergraduate level, not least a longer word count (between 12,000 and 20,000 words).  The structure is much the same as an undergraduate dissertation, but you will be expected to investigate your topic in greater detail, and develop your research methodology skills further.

While writing a dissertation, every part should be given importance. From the cover page to the conclusion, if you write the dissertation in an authentic format, you will be able to grab the best grades in your academics. Sometimes while writing such a long piece of paper, students cannot focus on the dissertation's formatting and structure, and the cover page is one of them. The cover page plays an important role in providing useful information such as the university's name, student name, enrollment number, topic details and many other things. A cover page for a dissertation provides a professional look to your dissertation and makes it easy for the reader to recognize you better for your work. Therefore, this blog will discuss the importance and how to write a perfect cover page for your dissertation.

What Is The Importance Of Writing A Cover Page For A Dissertation?

Every student in his master's or PhD program has to write a dissertation to show their knowledge and skillset to their professor. To write the dissertation perfectly and provide useful curriculum information, it is mandatory to make a cover page for the dissertation. But sometimes students might forget to write their cover page as they are not aware of the importance of it. Also, not having the right procedure for the cover page can reduce their grades in their final term. Hence, writing a cover page for the dissertation and delivering useful information to the professor is mandatory. You have to add some basic information, like the title, which helps the reader to be involved and better understand the information you are going to provide in your dissertation. Also, a title helps the reader to remember the report for a long duration if the title is catchy. Therefore, a cover page has its own importance in delivering the most useful information that can attract the reader's interest. You can use the graphics on your cover page, which will enhance your written data's attractiveness and sharpness. Another important thing you need to mention on the cover page is the author's name, which will help the reader publish it with the right name.

For writing the dissertation cover page for UK universities, you must be aware of the format and template, such as MLA, APA 6, APA7, and Harvard. As we all know, the cover page provides the correct information, but you should keep in mind the right template and format to design it. Hence we have discussed a most authentic dissertation cover page template that will assist you in making the dissertation perfectly.

  • Name Of The University And Title Of Dissertation: always begin your dissertation cover page with the universities name in which you have been enrolled and then followed by the title of the dissertation. Also, be specific with the details, and must be written in the centre of the cover page.
  • Name Of The Student: Every article, project, assignment, etc., should have the author's name on the opening page; this is only natural. Make sure to provide your whole name. Your course name, roll number, and academic year should be listed beneath your name.
  • Subject Details: you must be very specific regarding the subject details so that it would be easy for the reader to rectify them. You can add a brief definition of the subject in which you have written the dissertation.
  • Name Of The Teacher Or Professor: Make sure to note who the assignment is for after entering all your personally identifiable information. That includes your professor's name. Make sure the coursework includes the professor's complete name.
  • Follow The Instruction Of Your Professor And University: Check to see if your instructor provided any more information on the assignment or Cover Page. If they have, make sure to heed all of their recommendations because doing so will demonstrate how observant you are. They can conclude that you are not concerned about your studies and that you only gave your project your best effort if you don't adhere to the teacher's guidelines.
