The next exciting entry in the V/H/S anthology series hearkens back to the days of 1980s filmmaking. V/H/S/85 , appropriately lit up with neon lights and doused in fog machines, collects several different horror-centric short films from a plethora of directors, with the whole shebang focusing on a specific theme. While all V/H/S films feature an overarching narrative connecting the shorts, we're jumping back to the 1980s this time around, with several era-appropriate stories featured throughout.

Scott Derrickson Returns for V/H/S/85

The biggest strengths of V/H/S/85 lie solely within its anthology format. When a weapon that could end all life as we know it is sequestered into the wrong hands, Hunt and the IMF are tasked with preventing a global catastrophe. Of course, this also means Hunt will have to put his life at severe risk through a plethora of jaw-dropping stunts.

An Impressive Mission: Impossible Film

Tom Cruise's physicality aside, Dead Reckoning is an impressive film from a purely technical standpoint. Despite numerous production setbacks following the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects provided by Industrial Light & Magic on top of oodles of ludicrously expensive stunts makes for a total visual spectacle. There's even an incredible train sequence that's sure to take your breath away. Combine that with nominations for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards, and you have what is likely one of the most viscerally entertaining action movies of 2023. Good Burger 2

Did we really need a follow-up to Good Burger ? Given Good Burger 2 's popularity, it looks like we did. Good Burger 2 picks up twenty-six years after the events of the first film. Dexter Reed has distanced himself from the titular restaurant in pursuit of independent entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, when his latest attempt at innovating fails, he's forced to return to Good Burger once more to get back on his feet. Though Dexter is greeted with warm faces and a wonderful reunion with Ed, his attempts to break out from his greasy occupation may put the entire establishment at risk. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell reprise their roles from the original film, in addition to producing the production as a whole.

A Welcomed Legacy Sequel

Good Burger 2 is a welcome nostalgia trip for fans of this wacky comedy franchise. Thompson and Mitchell haven't missed a beat, maintaining the hilarious chemistry that defined their iconic relationship so many years ago. A plethora of celebrity cameos, including appearances from Mark Cuban, Andy Samburg, and Nicole Richie can also be found throughout. Of course, returning writers Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert penned the sequel's hilarious screenplay, having originally worked on the beloved first film to begin with. Featuring a unique "sketchbook" style that resembles hand-drawn animation, Mutant Mayhem looks to be one of the most colorful films of 2023. Its ensemble voice cast featuring Jackie Chan, John Cena, Rose Byrne, Ayo Edebiri, and more all have exemplary chemistry with each other. Not only that, the score provided by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross makes every memorable scene pop. The latest and greatest by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is a focused biopic about what is arguably one of the most intriguing faces of World War II: J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is portrayed by Cillian Murphy here. The film follows the career of Oppenheimer, ranging from his initial studies, to his involvement with the Manhattan Project, to his ultimate downfall. What can be said about Oppenheimer that hasn't been said already? It's a film whose impressive cinematography, emphasis on practical effects, and terrific casting catapulted it to the top of 2023's most popular films. This is doubly true based on its Academy Award nominations, bringing home several for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay among numerous other accolades. The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

If one could make a guess, David Gordon Green's The Exorcist: Believer will see its reputation improve over time. Is it even half as compelling as Wiliam Friedkin's original? Not at all. But, it takes a few risks, and even packs one heck of an ending. The narrative follows a father and a separate set of parents as they do everything in their power to save the souls of their daughters, who apparently had some sort of demonic run-in in the middle of the woods.

An Imperfect But Admirable Attempt to Recapture the Magic of a Classic

Director Green has left the planned two subsequent installments, but the studio plans to continue. But, just perhaps, maybe that shouldn't be the case. If Believer is left alone to be its own thing, it will develop two powers as time progresses. For one, while underutilized, Believer still brought Ellen Burstyn back and gave her character some closure with her once-possessed daughter. And, two, the fact that the film ends with one of the two daughters trapped in Hell is a legitimately devastating way to just kind of leave things.

The Holdovers

The Holdovers is more than just a holdover from last year. Directed by Alexander Payne of Sideways and The Descendants fame, The Holdovers is an apt title, as it focuses on a group of students at Barton Academy who are left on campus for the holidays. Now left in the care of Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), an ornery history teacher, the group find themselves warming up to their hostile chaperone as he does the same for them. David Henningson penned the film's script, it being his feature-length debut, with Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa co-starring alongside Giamatti.

The Holdovers Is an Authentic Period Piece

Seeing as how the film is set in the 1970s, there's a genuine effort to recreate the era in every way you can imagine. Not only are the characters done up in period-appropriate costumes with similar dialects, the film itself employs similar pacing and story beats from films of the era, giving it an authentic feeling of being ripped straight out of the 1970s. Of course, Giamatti dazzles as Paul Hunham as well, with Dominic Sessa putting on a clinic of a performance in his feature-film debut. Stream on Peacock

Thanksgiving.

Famed horror director Eli Roth has finally returned to the big screen with one of his most intriguing projects yet: Thanksgiving . A feature-length extension of a fake trailer made for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodgiuez's 2007 double-feature, Grindhouse , Thanksgiving marks Roth's first foray into both holiday-themed horror and the slasher subgenre. Set during the eponymous holiday season, this straightforward slasher sees a masked killer tormenting the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The killer does so while donning a John Carver mask, adding the pulpy humor found throughout.

Eli Roth's First Slasher

Any fan of Roth's work needs to check out Thanksgiving . It's the first time he's foraying into one of the most seminal horror subgenres ever made, and knowing his penchant for hyperviolence, it'll be a great opportunity to see some brutal slasher kills . Thankfully, you can also expect to see his patented brand of dark humor as well, made all the more effective via the performances of Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, and Milo Manheim. The Equalizer 3

The Equalizer 3 finds Robert McCall in post-retirement...retirement. Because, of course, that first retirement attempt didn't work out so well. Now, he's living in Italy, mingling with the locals and developing connections. Connections that are threatened when the local crime bosses seek to increasingly control their lives, property, and bank accounts.

A Solid Trilogy-Capper

The first Equalizer film was, like the original John Wick , fairly small-scale. The sequel brought in a bit more of McCall's past, not to mention those he thought were his friends. In other words, the stakes were higher in the sequel. But the third film takes things back to even more restrained territory than the first one. If any of the three Equalizer s is more concerned with fleshing out the character of McCall more than anything else, it's the third.

Shortcomings

Shortcomings , the feature-length directorial debut of Randall Park — aka "Fake Jim" from The Office — is a dramedy you can't afford to miss. Bay Area natives Ben (Justin H. Min), Miko (Ally Maki), and Alice (Sherry Cola) find themselves on the other side of the country in beautiful New York City as they each search for their role in life. Ben, being a connoisseur of arthouse films, attempts to life the best he can as a newly-made bachelor, though each of these three will find that life is far from predictable.

Shortcomings Has Few Shortcomings

Debut films are always a fickle thing to get right, but luckily, Randall Park delivered a thoroughly compelling drama for audiences of all kinds. The character of Ben is given a layer of depth you don't typically see in films like this, with his positive and negative qualities making him into a fully-rounded character. This is no doubt assisted by the terrific performances of Justin H. Min and the numerous talented cast members he shares the screen with. You'll find a deeper meaning in Shortcomings , even if you're not necessarily anticipating one. Stream on Netflix

Lift (2024)

Lift is an essential movie for Kevin Hart fans, as he takes the lead in what will likely be one of the best heist movies of the year. This Netflix exclusive sees Hart playing the role of Cyrus, a skilled thief, as he and a group of professional heisters attempt to hoist hundreds of millions of dollars worth of gold from a gargantuan passenger plane. There's just one problem: the heist can only be completed as the plane is midair. F. Gary Gray directed this feature, having previously directed beloved films like Straight Outta Compton , Friday , and Set It Off .

Kevin Hart Helms a Hair-Raising Heist

Those who love heist films, especially those of the ludicrous variety, will find themselves right at home with Lift 's delightfully absurd premise. That being said, there are other positive qualities to look forward to as well. The supporting cast, featuring big names like Sam Worthington and Vincent D'Onofrio , play well with Hart's charm, and the over-the-top nature of the film's presentation makes for a perfect, easy-viewing experience. Bradley Cooper returns to the world of music once more with Maestro , painting a terrific portrait of one of the most beloved musical icons in American history. Maestro features Cooper both in the director's chair and in front of the camera, playing the role of the famed Leonard Bernstein alongside Carey Mulligan as Felicia Montealegre. A biopic at its core, the film examines Bernstein's successful career as one of America's most revered composers, chronicling his tenacity as he takes on the world of orchestras and Broadway in equal measure. Bernstein's marriage to Felicia Montealegre also gets plenty of focus here as well.

Maestro Is a Triumphant Black and White Film

Being one of the few films of 2023 to utilize black-and-white cinematography , there's a clear and conscious effort to use this style to its advantage, with specific scene lighting making the grayscale coloring truly pop. It's an incredible film to watch from a purely visual standpoint, though the on-screen chemistry between Cooper and Mulligan certainly helps as well. The Super Mario Bros. The Killer (2023)

David Fincher returns to the world of film – and Netflix, coincidentally – with his latest thriller. The Killer sees Michael Fassbender playing the role of our titular assassin, a cold and calculating man who puts his business above all else. In a story we're all too familiar with, our killer makes a fatal misstep in what would've been an everyday job. Faced with death, he attempts to survive a globetrotting manhunt that may ultimately put him six feet under. Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Sala Baker, and Tilda Swinton perform alongside Fassbender. The film is based on the titular French graphic novel series originally written by Alexis Nolent.

The Killer Kills It

Fassbender kills it as our protagonist, crafting a compelling performance out of a character who's as unfeeling as they come. It's a deliberately simple thriller compared to Fincher's previous films as of late, but in foregoing a complex plot, he's able to make the creative elements of each scene shine brighter than ever before. This is especially evident in the film's soundscape. It's an interesting experience, and one that should have received more clout given the presence of Thurman, Jackson, and Joe Manganiello. Inspired by the stage musical of the same name, which was based on an original work by Alice Walker, this musical film shares a few similarities to the 1985 movie adaptation by Stephen Spielberg. Director Blitz Bazawule's third feature film focuses on Celie (Fantasia Barrino), a Black woman whose life in the early 1900s is continually troubled by numerous tragedies. However, despite it all, she persists via the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.

An Impressive Adaptation

With a special cameo appearance from Whoopi Goldberg, The Color Purple is certainly one of the more impressive adaptations to release in 2023. In its efforts to blend elements from both the 1985 film and the stage musical, what you get is a production that takes the best from both adaptations and melds them into a cohesive whole. Little Richard himself appears via archival footage, with additional appearances by John Waters, Mick Jagger, Tom Jones, and Nona Hendryx.

A Compelling Musical Documentary

Lisa Cortés directed this fantastic musical documentary , with Dee Rees additionally being attached as an executive producer. The involvement of Rees gives this impressive documentary some additional credence, as she has had a particularly significant history in Hollywood, previously directing films like Saint X and Mudbound in addition to writing for shows like Empire and Phillip K. Dick's Electric Dreams . The poster for Meg 2: The Trench features a ginormous shark about to eat a small dog as if it were a crumb on the pier. Frankly, the poster sells the entire experience. Jason Statham reprises his role from The Meg as Jonas Taylor, a rescue diver who has since become an environmental vigilante. After a routine investigation into the Mariana Trench unearths the Megs once more, Taylor and a group of scientists must face off against both humanity and gigantic sharks alike in a desperate fight for survival.

The Trench Doubles the Action

You won't watch Meg 2: The Trench and find something deep — unless you're referring to the depths of the ocean, that is. Rather, what you'll find is Jason Statham personifying Poseidon himself, taking on leviathan sharks and other prehistoric marine animals in ludicrous fashion. This thrilling action film is loaded with incredible stunts, stellar effects, and more of what we've come to love from the first Meg film. If you want to see a megalodon eat a dinosaur whole, chances are Meg 2 is the action film for you. Stream on Max

We'll cut right to the chase. BS High is one of the wildest sports documentaries out there. This Max-exclusive documentary focuses on the controversial high school American football team, the Bishop Sycamore Centurions, following an absolute blowout loss to IMG Academy in 2021. But underneath a final score of 56-0, there are layers upon layers of fraudulent transactions, corrupt bookkeeping, and shocking revelations to be discovered. For one thing, some of Bishop Sycamore's players weren't even high school students — they were fully grown adults.

A Wild Sports Story

BS High offers an in-depth look at what exactly transpired on that faithful game day, in addition to everything leading up to it. The team's former head coach, Roy Johnson, as well as several former players, offer their unique perspectives on Bishop Sycamore's day-to-day operations on top of how the team came into existence in the first place. It marks a rare instance of being able to see what truly went on behind the scenes from those who experienced it themselves. As huge horror buffs, we tested a Nun II stream. It was a CAM–quality link, but we knew what we were getting into, thanks to the resolution labels . There’s plenty of other information about each movie, too, once you select a stream.

Our only complaint was that the “Latest Movies” feed includes any recently added titles. It quickly becomes cluttered with older movies that have just been added , making it harder to find newer flicks. But that does make for a very broad content library that’ll give you heaps of options!

Right off the bat, I appreciate that I don't need an account to use it. I also like that resume playback is supported so I can pause and watch the rest of the movie later.

However, there are a few things I don't like. While the website is definitely very modern-looking, it's not super user-friendly. Along that same line, I would love to have sorting options within each genre list because it's way more fun to see which documentaries, for example, were added recently so I'm not scrolling over all the same movies I always see.

There are several hundred movies here that include comedy, drama, horror, action, romance, family, documentary movies, and foreign films. They also feature web and film school originals and list some titles by a common theme. A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

Redbox is known for its DVD rental kiosks, but they also have free movie streams available through their website and mobile app. No matter where you use it, the user interface is quite bland, and you can't sort any of the lists. Still, I'll end up here from time to time if I can't find something good through these other services.

Like most movie sites, Redbox's collection can be browsed by genre to help you find dramas, kid movies, romance films, comedies, etc. Faith-Based is one category I haven't seen elsewhere.

Redbox also makes it super simple to see which movies are the most popular and which ones will be leaving the site soon. Some of the latest movies added to their streaming collection include Autumn Road, Repeat, Night Night, Megan , and Infinitum: Subject Unknown .

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use the Kanopy signup page to search for your library, whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include Memento, The Girl on the Train, and Maurice.

There's also an entirely separate section for Kanopy kids movies . My son's old enough now to watch non-kid movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

That’s right: There’s a slew of exciting new films coming out in theaters this month, like the sci-fi drama The Beast starring Léa Seydoux, Alex Garland’s Civil War , Dev Patel’s Monkey Man , and more. All of those look great, but if you’re looking to enjoy a fantastic movie from the comfort of your home, there’s a wealth of great films to watch on streaming in April.

This month, we’ve got Jonathan Glazer’s harrowing historical drama The Zone of Interest , an underappreciated classic by the late, great William Friedkin, Bong Joon-ho’s terrifying monster flick The Host , and more.

Here are the movies new to streaming services you should watch this month.

Late last month, director Julien Leclercq released his latest movie, The Wages of Fear , the third remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s seminal 1953 thriller. If you’re looking for a nail-biting drama about a group of men risking life and limb for a second chance at life, what better film to watch than The Exorcist director William Friedkin’s 1977 remake?

Named after Miles Davis’ 1967 album, Sorcerer follows a group of four men: fugitives, resistance fighters, outcasts, and debtors, each of whom has taken refuge in a remote village in Colombia with no way home. Desperate to escape their predicament, each of them accepts a terrifying job offer: Transport a convoy of unstable dynamite through the jungle to extinguish an oil well explosion in exchange for enough money to leave the country. Over the course of their journey, all of the men are brought face-to-face with their own mortality and rendered shadows of their former selves by the ruthless perils of the jungle.

Friedkin’s film is a brutal, adrenaline-pumping experience, packed to the brim with moments that will have viewers gasping in their seats. You wanna see a man get impaled by a bunch of trees while maneuvering a truck over a unstable bridge during a raging storm? You wanna see the hope drain out of a man’s eyes as he watches his last chance at returning home erupt in a plume of hellfire? Boy, is this the movie for you! —Toussaint Egan

Look: There are biographical dramas, and then there are great biographical dramas. Miloš Forman’s 1984 dramatization of the life and career of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart sits squarely within the latter category.

Told from the perspective of Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), the film recounts the composer’s earliest meeting with Mozart, his intense jealousy of his rival’s apparent musical genius, his subsequent crisis of faith, and his inevitable plot to undermine him. As much a period epic about Mozart’s greatness as it is about Salieri’s descent into madness, Amadeus is a lavishly opulent and enrapturing ode to the power of classical music, as well as a captivating portrayal of one of the greatest haters to ever grace cinema. F. Murray Abraham’s Salieri ran so that Robert Downey Jr.’s Lewis Strauss could fly. —TE

Bong Joon-ho’s career is filled with bangers, from the tense serial killer drama Memories of Murder to his Western breakthrough with Parasite . But my favorite movie of his remains The Host , an excellent example of exciting blockbuster filmmaking with a message.

After a member of the American military orders the dumping of toxic chemicals into the Han River, strange things start happening in the water. Years later, a young girl is kidnapped by a creature that emerges from the river, and it’s up to her clumsy father (Song Kang-ho) to try and save her. Bong fires on all cylinders in The Host — it’s exciting, tense, funny, and deeply emotional. It’s the best kind of blockbuster filmmaking, and if you haven’t seen it, now is your chance to fix that. — Pete Volk

The Zone of Interest

Genre: Historical drama Director: Jonathan Glazer Cast: Christian Friedel, Sandra Hüller, Johann Karthaus

The further away we get from 2023, the more convinced I become that The Zone of Interest is the movie of that year, and will live on as a defining piece of cinema from this age.

Jonathan Glazer turns his camera away from the usual, often exploitative way of shooting Holocaust films, eschewing gratuitous shots of suffering to instead show the easy, casual nature with which humans can commit atrocities. It’s a triumph in storytelling and a huge formal achievement, creating a new kind of cinema through its innovative and horrifying use of sound design . It’s a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience that reminds you of the power of art, and while it may not sound like a particularly fun time, I could not recommend it more highly. — PV

One of many stellar recent Clint Eastwood movies unfairly dismissed because of perceptions of the director and his politics, Richard Jewell is a great adaptation of a real story that is fully committed to the idea that people in power cannot be trusted.

Paul Walter Hauser is Richard Jewell, a quiet and awkward man who long dreamed of being a police officer, but couldn’t cut it and ended up as a security guard. While working a concert during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, he notices a suspicious package and herds people away, saving lives after the package is revealed to be a bomb. After initially being hailed as a hero, Jewell becomes the target of an FBI investigation into the bomb and an ensuing media circus, with all parties painting the one man who saved the day as a villain.

The most interesting part of Richard Jewell is the disconnect between Jewell’s beliefs about law enforcement agencies and the truth. He completely idealizes the FBI... until he’s faced with the reality of their harassment. It’s a terrific performance from Hauser, best known for his work in the comedy genre, and a very charming man in real life who plays convincingly off-type here. I’m still sore he was snubbed from the Oscars. — PV

Crackle offers an impressive catalog of theatrical movies. And it also offers a library of original series and movies you can only watch on the Crackle platform. The Roku Channel offers hundreds of movie, live news and TV series. Some have complete seasons. All this is free to viewers who use Roku streaming devices.

Free Movies on Streaming Websites

The no-charge content on these platforms is a little different from the free trials offered by many subscription streaming services. The content on Crackle or Peacock, for example, is available without the need to set up an account on the platform. You also don't have to provide any payment information. Free-trial services work a little differently. Many premium streaming platforms, such as Disney+ and Apple TV+, offer free trial periods during which you can watch their content without paying. The same is true of many network streaming platforms such as STARZ or Showtime. The difference is that you'll need to sign up for an account on the platform and provide payment information. You won't be charged a subscription fee during the free-trial period. But if you don't cancel by the time the trial period ends, your account will automatically convert to a paid subscription. You'll be charged the subscription fee.

Keeping Free Movies Online

Of course, there's often a trade-off involved when it comes to watching movies for free. Sites often subsidize their free streaming movies offerings by including advertising along with the films. Monkey Man Has a Bold New Vision

Dev patel’s directorial debut aims thrillingly high, even if it stumbles..

For those raised Hindu and steeped in all the associated lore from youth, the opening scenes of Dev Patel’s directorial debut, the action thriller Monkey Man , might invoke some nostalgia: A child is sitting with his mother as she reads to him from an illustrated book, The Mighty Hanuman , and delves into the simian deity’s famed origin story . As told by the epic Ramayana , the mischievous young Hanuman—considered, in some traditions, to be the anthropomorphic avatar of the destroyer god Shiva—caught an early-morning sunrise and, being rather hungry, mistook the sun for a mango and jumped up to try to eat it. Indra, the king of the gods, stepped in by striking and killing Hanuman with a lightning bolt. Realizing their mistake, the gods resuscitated Hanuman and blessed him with mighty powers—in effect turning him into a superpowered being. A godly monkey-man, if you will, able to dole out both knockout punches and pranks.

Such storybooks, which present the legends of Hinduism to kids with awe-inspiring illustrations and bold interpretations of ancient Sanskrit texts, are a staple in the households of the Hindu diaspora. It’s clear that Patel, a British Hindu raised by Gujarati migrants, was inspired by these adapted tales of the gods’ human incarnations, their otherworldly strengths, and their righteous struggles against evil. For Patel’s most personal work yet—he directed, co-wrote, co-produced, and starred in Monkey Man , which came out in theaters Friday—Hanuman is the core religious symbol driving the story, in which the protagonist takes literal strength from the ape-god to wreak vengeance on the corrupt, venal forces that ransacked his forest community and murdered his mother. But Hanuman is far from the only representative of Hinduism at the core of Monkey Man , and Patel’s thrilling, if uneven, feature marks a fascinating, complicated, yet ultimately affirmative and morally forceful place in the religion’s cultural canon. At a time when pernicious iterations of Hindu nationalism, or Hindutva , are gaining a global foothold both culturally and politically , Monkey Man is a combative gesture toward a different vision.

Not that it would seem so at first. Back in January, film critic Jordan Ruimy reported that, according to an “ in-the-know source ,” Monkey Man , originally set for distribution by Netflix, was dropped by the streamer because “the portrayal of a fictional right-wing Hindu Nationalist character … worried Netflix about their future dealings in India.” The movie was then picked up by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, in partnership with Universal Pictures, although both parties reportedly “suggested possible editing changes and delayed the release until what they thought would be the right date.” One such change—as pointed out on X by union organizer Atulya Dora-Laskey—appeared in a new version of the trailer, which changed the color of the villainous political party from saffron, the adopted color of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The updated trailer showed this fictional “Sovereign Party” adopting a solid red color normally affiliated with India’s Marxist Communist Party, which currently rules the state of Kerala (and whose chief minister and general electorate are rather antagonistic toward Modi ).

Such preemptive self-censorship is sadly unsurprising, given studios’ dependence on international audiences , India’s significant moviegoing population, and entertainment executives’ general willingness to buckle in the face of governmental threats from autocracies like China. It wouldn’t even be the first time an international production was adjusted to placate Indian rulers: In 2021, Netflix dropped famed director Anurag Kashyap’s planned adaptation of the book Maximum City , a critical look at Hindu-nationalist violence in Mumbai. Other such muzzled projects, as reported by the Washington Post , include political satires made under the aegis of Prime Video, as well as a Netflix documentary about India’s 1970s-era Emergency, a period of government tyranny that presaged modern India’s democratic crises. It would seem that Monkey Man was one of Netflix’s “quietly abandoned and withheld” properties, as characterized by the Post, and that Peele’s production company likely took steps to minimize further potential for backlash.

We don’t know what other edits were made from the original cut, which was completed in 2021, and I suspect we aren’t going to get much transparency from Patel, Peele, or anyone else involved. Universal even seems unsure whether Monkey Man will hit Indian theaters on the planned April 19 release (incidentally, the start date for India’s much-anticipated general elections). There do seem to be some surface-level tells as to the production’s general caution: Monkey Man ’s setting is a fictional city named Yatana (the Hindi word for torment ), although it bears a striking resemblance to real-life Mumbai. The movie includes real news footage from the street-level protests and pogroms of the Modi era—albeit sans specifics, so an unknowing non-Indian viewer could be pardoned for missing it. There is, of course, the saffron-to-red imprint, as well as vaguely molded story parallels with the religious violence, business-dealing corruption, and land exploitation that suffuses institutionalized Hindutva as well as Indian politics writ large. (See also: the long, mutually beneficial bromance between Modi and multibillionaire industrialist Gautam Adani.) On the PR side of things, Patel has talked up the film’s empowering transgender representation , while otherwise presenting Monkey Man in simple class-war terms not too dissimilar to those of his breakout, Slumdog Millionaire : “This movie is about the marginalized—the underdogs—all lifting each other up to achieve a justice that was only meant for the privileged,” he wrote in a Reddit “ Ask Me Anything ” Q&A promoting the film. Indian writers have emphasized the Hinduism and Hanuman of it all while noting opaquely that the film addresses issues of caste and class.

But if I had fears that Monkey Man would be some hazy feature dumbed down to appease the Indian government, I can now report that, having seen the film, it’s hardly so. Rather, it’s a messy, gory, yet compelling story that manages to employ various pillars of Indian society in an interesting, if sometimes confused, manner. (I say this as someone who was raised Hindu and has taken a lot of shit for pointing out the very real Hindutva symbology of the beloved blockbuster RRR .)

As established, Patel’s hero, Kid, is a vengeful young lad ready to take down the system that killed his mother and ruined his life. Flashback sequences dotted throughout the movie piece together what happened: During a crackdown on the residents of his childhood forest dwelling, local police kill and displace residents so that the land can be developed for a religious construction. Police commissioner Rana Singh (Sikander Kher) personally led the surge—and killed Kid’s mother. In the present day, Singh still leads the city police and is a patron of the famed spiritual leader Baba Shakti (longtime Indian actor Makarand Deshpande, in his English-language debut), who’s supporting a Sovereign Party candidate’s run for office and has come under some criticism for his jingoistic rhetoric, as well as his forced expulsion of people in a rural locale in order to build a Hindu commune. Kid, meanwhile, earns his keep by participating in underground hand-to-hand combat, sporting a signature monkey mask as he trains to avenge his mother. Kid manages to get to Singh by finding employment at a restaurant with a hidden harem, but botches an attempted attack and is shot by police. A temple-residing community of transgender Indians (or hijra ) led by Alpha (Bollywood action veteran Vipin Sharma) heals Kid, and they plan another offense on Shakti and Singh in time for Diwali and the local elections, in which the Sovereign Party triumphs. Nevertheless, Kid and Co. eventually succeed in reaching the villains once more, and one final battle ensues.

Whatever the changes made to this final cut, the intended real-life counterparts are hardly mistakable. As Siddhant Adlakha noted at IGN , Baba Shakti appears to be a clear stand-in for Yogi Adityanath, the ultra-right-wing Uttar Pradesh chief minister notorious for his Islamophobic speechifying, calls for population control, and weaponization of cops against protesters and journalists. The events of Kid’s childhood bear resemblances to the many instances of Hindu nationalist vigilantes entering myriad villages and tribal collectives , often by force, to terrorize residents and “Hinduize” the populations. (Of course, Kid’s community is already Hindu—but don’t forget, there are various sects within the religion, as well as pronounced conflicts spurred by holy leaders of high castes who bear contempt for Hindus of lower castes, such as Kid and his mother.) And the chant-heavy, bloodthirsty rallies that Baba Shakti commands are hardly distinguishable from Indian political rallies these days . To have a big-budget film that sets up such analogues, casts a devoted acolyte of a major Hindu god to fight them aggressively, and even employs poor hijra characters for a moral cause (at a time when Hindu nationalists have attempted to roll back Indian progress on LGBTQ+ rights ) carries no small significance.

Notably, the representations of Hinduism encompass such a wide range—from Patel’s Hanuman tributes, to the depictions of festivals that portray tales from the Ramayana via puppet, to Baba Shakti’s clear Brahmin signifiers—that it seems apparent Patel is taking religious fundamentalism as a whole to task. And there are even smaller allusions to the most disturbing impacts of Hindutva : The audience for Kid’s first fight in the movie loudly boos the mention of Christians, a probable reference to the shocking violence that Hindu mobs have afflicted on Indian Christians. (But they are very OK with a mention of saffron, edited flag colors aside.)

If Monkey Man does stumble somewhere, it may be that it’s ultimately too jam-packed, too incoherent, too loud, and too underdeveloped a final product to cast these bold messages clearly and more effectively. The fights are certainly a lot of fun, inspired as they are by classic predecessors in action cinema from Japan and South Korea. But overall, the film suffers from a preponderance of characters we don’t get to know well, an overstylization of scene transitions and unevenly timed sequences that makes for a headache, and a not-so-fully-fledged connection forged between all the villainous elements at play here. A knowledgeable viewer can fill in the blanks on the types of ties between businessmen, police, politicians, spiritual advisers, and lower-caste persecution portrayed in Monkey Man . Another viewer may find it all a little obscure.

Still, the saga that Patel constructs in Monkey Man —an underdog slugfest where a poorer, lower-caste, unjustly displaced village boy weaponizes his faith in favor of justice for himself and others—is a welcome contrast to an Indian cinematic scene that, under Modi, has been reduced to merely parroting lazy bigotry and flashy patriotism. Patel may not say as much out loud, either in the film or to the press. But I think he’s landed his point with a punch.
