If we gave an Award for the most unusual product name, the Union Research Simply Italy would have a good chance of winning. This distinctive all-valve integrated – from one of the world’s leading valve amplifier manufacturers – is so named to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the country’s unification.

The Simply Italy, like every other Unison Research valve amp (including the legendary £30,000 Absolute 845) was designed by Professor Gianni Sacchetti and engineered to the same standards as its bigger brothers.

Despite all this, it costs the same as a decent conventional transistor amp. On paper then, a highly tempting proposition.

Unison Research Simply Italy: Tech specs

An update of the Simply Two (more than 10,000 sold over a six-year lifetime), the Simply Italy has a simple circuit layout that uses just four valves. The smaller ECC82s pair at the front are used for pre-amplification duties, with larger EL34s behind providing the muscle.

Perhaps ‘muscle’ is putting it too strongly. Power output is just 12 watts per channel which, while low, turns out to be not quite as limiting as it sounds. Stay with speakers that are relatively easy to drive and you won’t go far wrong in small- to medium-sized rooms.

There’s a small toggle switch on the top panel between the valves (below). This governs the amount of negative feedback used in the circuitry. Unusually, for an adjustment of this type it’s perfectly safe to switch between the settings while listening.

The adjustment is slight, and the choice is between 1.8dB or 5dB. While acknowledging the superior fluidity of the lower setting we found ourselves preferring the 5dB setting with every speaker we tried.

We prefer the improved grip and control it offers. The adjustment isn’t a make or break thing for the Simply Italy’s performance, more of a subtle tweak to tune it more to taste.

Unison Research Simply Italy: Sound quality

In the finest valve-amplifier traditions this Unison Research never turns harsh or aggressive. Ask too much, either in terms of volume or particularly difficult speakers and the result will be a gentle squashing of dynamics, and the onset of confusion, rather than any outright assault on your ears.

Get it right, and the Simply Italy gives you a sense of unforced ease and fluidity that transistor alternatives don’t come close to delivering.

Take a listen to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and this amplifier sparkles. Despite being well over 50 years old, this recording is lovely, sounding natural and dynamic. This amplifier does a fine job conveying those qualities – it has the finesse to render instrument textures with accuracy, while giving the presentation an appealingly natural, organised, full-bodied sound.

Move onto the likes of REM’s Out of Time in 24bit/192kHz form from our reference Naim NDX streamer, and the results still impress.

There isn’t quite the raw energy that the likes of Roksan’s Caspian M2 or Naim’s Nait XS unearth from songs such as Losing My Religion . However, the Unison Research counters with its rich, yet informative, way with higher frequencies and ability to convey the emotion in Michael Stipe’s voice convincingly. Importantly, it always remains an entertaining listen.

Union Research Simply Italy: Build quality

Move away from sound quality and this little amplifier piles on the plus points. It’s built very well: every control and switch has a nice chunky feel to it.

As for appearance, you can judge for yourselves. We love the retro looks, but whatever your opinion it certainly stands out in the world of sub-two thousand pound amplifiers.

Unison Research Simply Italy Integrated Tube Amplifier

If you’ve ever been to a show like the Toronto Audio Video Entertainment Show, you’ll know that the tube amplifier product category is alive and well.  You’ll never see this type of amplification technology in your smart phone or tablet – that’s true – but when it comes to listening to music at home, many listeners still very much prefer the sweet sound of tubes.  And while there are many tube amplifiers that will set you back thousands of dollars, there are also some surprisingly affordable models.  Take the Simply Italy integrated amplifier from Unison Research for instance, which retails for a reasonable $2,450.  Have I got your attention?  Good!

Unison Research is an Italian company that has been designing and hand making quality audio components since its inception in 1987.  This Simply Italy is a compact integrated amplifier designed to coincide with Italy’s 150th birthday.  Its design was inspired by and shares many features with the company’s highly successful Simply Two integrated amp which was in production for many years.  Much like the Simply Two, the Simply Italy has a single-ended ultralinear Class A design that outputs 12 watts per channel.  It utilizes EL34 tubes in the output stage and ECC82 tubes in the preamp and driver stages.  Thanks to its nominal load impedance of 6 ohms, this amplifier is capable of driving even the most demanding, 4 ohm speakers.  Inside the Simply Italy, the power transformer and the first filter stage of the power supply are doubled, separating all preamp stages.  The result is lower crosstalk and distortion.  Unison Research calls this a quasi dual-mono design.  Unlike most manufacturers, this company makes its own very high quality output transformers and thanks to this the Simply Italy’s output stage has one EL34 tube in a single-ended ultralinear configuration.  This allows the pentode EL34 to operate in an intermediate manner between pentode and triode, but with increased linearity.

The Simply Italy is a compact component that will fit easily into many spaces where a full-sized component would be out of the question.  It measures 26 cm (wide) x 35 cm (deep) x 19 cm (tall), and weighs 15 kg.  Its wooden façade offers a source selection dial (CD, Tuner, AV, Aux, Tape) on the left and a matching volume dial on the right.  Both dials offer a good feel and precision.  Sandwiched between them are an On/Off toggle switch and a round tinted window behind which sits a green power indicator LED.  Unison Research offers two versions of this amp: one with a black front panel with circular cherry wood inserts around the dials and the power switch; and another version with a cherry wood front panel and black circular inserts.  In addition to looking nice, the wooden face plays a role in damping chassis resonances.  Two stainless-steel bars help with the thermal isolation of the electronic circuits and output transformers.  Between them sits an unassuming switch which allows the listener to toggle the amount of negative feedback in the circuit between 5 dB and 1.8 dB.  The feedback switch affects some of the amplifier’s parameters such as the damping factor, bandwidth and distortion, and allows the user to choose what sounds best with their specific speakers.  Just below that is a small Unison Research badge.  My review unit had the cherry front plate and I enjoyed its looks from every angle.  Unison Research includes a black metal cage to cover the tubes for those who have little ones running around the house or curious cats.  The build quality and finish of this amplifier is just excellent.

The rear connection panel of the Simply Italy offers gold-plated speaker terminals that will accept any type of connector, 5 RCA audio inputs and a single tape output.  There is also an IEC connector for those who would like to try an upgraded power cord.

The supplied remote is just as attractive looking as the amplifier itself.  It sports a wooden body and steel face and is quite comfortable to hold.  This remote works with other Unison Research components such as CD players and tuners and hence its face is filled with over 30 tiny buttons.

I listened to many hours of music in the background, letting the Simply Italy burn-in, before sitting down to do more in-depth listening sessions.  My source was the Bryston BDP-1 digital player connected through the Bryston BDA-1 DAC.  The speakers used were my long standing Focal Electra 1008 Be II bookshelves.  All cabling was provided by the Nordost Leif series cables.

First up was the Audiophile Voices VI album.  Rebecca Pidgeon performing “Spanish Harlem” sounded delightful and I instantly got lost in the music.  With every track I listened to from this album, the Simply Italy offered a seductively rich and fluid midrange with plenty of high frequency detail.  The bass line danced around tunefully from note to note.  I clearly heard the distinct texture and tone of each of the various string instruments.  The female voices sounded convincingly real, offering all the warmth and natural timbre of a live singer.  At times I swore the artist was with me in the room.  The Simply Italy positioned all the instruments and voices precisely within the soundstage, with ample air between them.  The result was a very engaging performance.

Switching gears, I put on AIR French Band’s Moon Safari album.  The Simply Italy effortlessly resolved the various intertwined layers of sound.  The soundstage was expansive and reached well beyond the limits of my room.  The bass was deep, articulate and played with lots of richness.  On the first track, “La Femme D’Argent”, the sound of rain was realistic, although perhaps not quite as natural as I’ve come to expect from my reference ModWright Instruments LS 100 tube preamp and KWA 100 amp.

The TRON: Legacy soundtrack, composed by Daft Punk, combines an 85-piece orchestra and electronic music like no other.  The Simply Italy conveyed the increasing energy and dynamics of “Overture” excellently.  It showed its ability to create a soundstage that slowly stretched from an image that was just a few feet wide to one that reached well beyond the walls of my room.  The bass notes in “The Grid” were rich and sank lower than I expected.  I turned up the volume, closed my eyes and my skin tingled as I became completely consumed by the music.  The Simply Italy was undeniably hitting all the right notes.

The energy with which this amp played The Black Keys was pretty amazing.  Despite its compact size, this amp is definitely capable of belching out energy and dynamics that surpass its dimensions.  But like any other amp, this one does have its limitations.  The Simply Italy does not have the massive power or dynamics as my ModWright duo and hence you shouldn’t expect it to drive a demanding pair of speakers to their full potential.  Then again at less than a third of the price of the ModWright gear, you shouldn’t be expecting such tricks.

Changing the musical direction once again, I listened to a few tracks from Tutti! Orchestral Sampler from Reference Recordings.  This fine classical selection played with great fluidity and energy through the Simply Italy.  Each and every instrument benefited greatly from the tube harmonics and detail extraction of this amp.  The sound was organic, well balanced and multi-dimensional.  The quiet passages played with delicacy, while the louder sections offered a dynamic presentation.  Perhaps the only aspect that lacked a little bit was weight in the bass that I normally hear on this album.

As I listened to the Simply Italy, I of course had a chance to play with the remote and quickly discovered a couple of small shortcomings.  When adjusting the volume, the amp produces a little distortion in the speakers.  This was most noticeable at very low volumes and when a source wasn’t playing, and did not happen at all when using the volume dial on the amp itself.  While I really enjoyed the styling of the remote, I was not impressed with the buttons.  They are tiny, uncomfortable and make an unnecessary noise when pressed.

The Unison Research Simply Italy is a little but surprisingly mighty amp.  If you’d like to experience the warmth and fluidity that only a tube amplifier can offer, without reaching too deep into your pocket, this is your chance.  The Simply Italy offers a smooth, sweet sound that engaged me deeply with every music genre that I listened to.  For $2,495 it presents a pretty remarkable value – you get what you pay for and more.  I give the Simply Italy my highest mark.  If this amp lands within your price range, you definitely need to listen to one.

My old Marantz KI Signature transistorized amp gave up the ghost and so it was time to upgrade. I first saw this model in a hifi shop window in Germany a few years ago and was blown away by the look of it. So this was the one I decided to buy. Set up was easy, just have to be careful iwth the valves which need a fair amoutn of pressure. So I now have it set up and working and it is really great. Never had a valve amp before and the difference in quality and clarity is simply amazing to the extent that I am hearing sounds in music I know well for the first time. I was concerned at some reviews about how powerful the 12w would be and whether my 8 ohm speakers would be match. I need not have worried, the amp is more than powerful enough and am no where near cranking the volume knob full circle. That said it does seem that the speakers need to be driven to allow all instruments to come to life and very quiet settings are not optimal. To conclude, very happy with the looks of it glowing away in a dimmed room and the performance far exceeded my expectations.

The Unison Research Simply Italy is one of 3 valve amps I own, amongst other non valve kit. The Simply has sublime clarity and imaging especially given the modest price. On a set of full range driver horns they are holographic, open and sweet. Obviously not like the 100wpc monoblocks for clout, but manage to be highly expressive and sufficiently authoritative in smaller listening rooms. If the power rating is sufficient then I can highly recommend!

The Unison Research Simply Two was certainly one of the worlds most successful integrated valve amplifiers, a product widely acclaimed both by audiophiles and the specialist press.

Taking our cue from the Simply Two, we decided to redesign and produce a new, small, integrated valve amplifier: called SIMPLY ITALY. It is similar in many aspects of the electronic design to the earlier model, but with a new, more modern appearance than the famous Simply Two.

Faithful to Unison Research tradition, this new amplifier is also  an Integrated. We are convinced that integrated amplifiers can offer many advantages, not only by simplifying the whole music replay system, but more importantly because of the improvements to sound quality that can be obtained by this method. Another important aspect lies in the considerable cost reduction (a single chassis, less cabling, both for power supply and interconnects).

The design of an integrated amplifier is considerably more complex and critical that that of a  separate pre or power amplifier.  Consider for example the fundamental importance of avoiding interference between each single component and between each stage (power supply, control, preamplifier, power output). Our experience over many years in designing and producing integrated amplifiers has enabled us along the way to create models which have become highly-valued classic pieces;  one example amongst many being the famous Unison Research ABSOLUTE.

Compared to its predecessor the Simply Two, the new  SIMPLY ITALY presents a number of modifications and changes,  however it maintains the same musical balance, functionality and is still extremely reliable. The output power - approximately 12 watts per channel - remains the same, however the output impedance is now 6-Ohms, making the amplifier suitable for use with both 4-Ohm and 8 Ohm loudspeakers.

The appearance in design, as noted, has undergone a radical change. The wood detailing is now confined to the front panel, but embellished by the addition of contrasting circular inserts , also of wood, which give a more attractive look to the controls.

Two satin stainless-steel bands beneath the valves add a touch of refinement, and also assist the thermic isolation of the electronic circuit and output transformers which gives a clear benefit to sound quality and overall reliability of the amplifier.

All amplifying stages are strictly valve-based, and the  circuit design adopted ensures that all the valves operate in pure Class-A.

Since the very beginning Unison Research has dedicated itself to the design, development and manufacture of output transformers, conscious of the vital importance of these complex elements in the pursuit of the best sound quality. Very few manufacturers in the world can boast of being able to produce high-quality transformers. Thanks in large measure to these particular transformers it has been possible to create an output stage for Simply Italy consisting of one EL34 in single-ended ultra linear configuration. Indeed this mode of operation is made possible by a particular development of the output transformers which in practice allows the pentode EL34s to operate almost as if they were triodes.

The preamp and driver stage of the power output is entrusted to ECC82 twin triodes. These valves provide excellent linearity and an almost complete absence of uneven order harmonic distortion.

The first amplifying triode of the input stage has zero feedback, both global and local. To obtain this, the classic cathode auto-bias circuit was eliminated and replaced by ionic bias, the only type able to guarantee absence of feedback and minimum phase rotation of the amplified signal.

It is interesting to note that this allows the possibility to choose the level of overall feedback of the amplifier, which in turn provides a better interface with the loudspeaker, the cables and the listening environment.

The preamplifier valve filaments are DC - supplied in order to prevent any residual AC component from interacting with the signal to be amplified.

The same care and attention reserved for the amplifying stage design was also given to the power supply. The Sinfonia power-supply  transformer is not a normal toroidal transformer, but the result of a project aimed at reducing electrical loss and containing dispersed magnetic flux.

The ideal power supply would be dual-mono, a solution however requiring space and adding weight. In the Simply Italy a type of power supply which might be called  Quaso-Dual-Mono has been adopted. In fact, apart from the power transformer and first filter stage the power supply is doubled, separating all preamp stages to the benefit of low crosstalk and low distortion.

The Simply Italy is supplied with an infra-red remote handset which allows the user to interface with the microchip control circuit; this manages control of analogue volume via an ALPS motorized potentiometer of the prestige RK27 series.

Four large gold-plated terminal connectors  allow any kind of loudspeaker cable to be used, and the loudspeakers can be between 4 and 8 ohms impedance.

In the Simply Italy nothing has been left to chance; the control knobs for example, turned from non-magnetic stainless-steel of large diameter and weight give a smooth flywheel effect  with excellent `feel` and rotational precision. The wood parts, important for the aesthetic design also play an important role in damping chassis resonance, and thus assist the delicate electronic parts, valves etc to perform at their best.

The adoption of refined circuit solutions which are out of necessity, complex; the generous size of components such as capacitors and transformers, and the decision to make Simply Italy a very compact amplifier have required that special attention in this project be paid to the chassis and internal layout.

As in all Unison Research projects, great care has been taken with the fundamentals such as power-supply track sizing, careful routing of both earthing and signal runs; the overall robustness, the ease of  build and servicing, and the provision of adequate ventilation for the internal circuit.

To ensure the best performance and best reliability over time of all the components used in Simply Italy have been carefully chosen and selected, from resistors, many of which are anti-inductive, to electrolytic capacitors, valve sockets in pure ceramic, to the printed circuit boards in vetronite.

Unison Research Simply Italy - Audiophile Integrated Tube Amplifier

The simply italy was inspired by the iconic simply two integrated amplifier from unison research, and produced to celebrate the 150th anniversary of italian unification. it's been designed to be faithful to the unison research tradition, by making it an integrated amplifier design that sounds great and pays attention to important audio engineering principles that reduce performance-affecting interference..

Because of the overwhelming success of the design, the Simply Italy shares many of the design features of the Simply Two. Both are ultra-linear, single-ended Class A designs that produce 12W per channel, and both use EL34 valves in the output stage and ECC82 valves in the pre-amp and driver stages to achieve Unison Research's trademark imaging, clarity and musical precision. But the Simply Italy offers a wide range of new features that were designed and developed more recently. First, the output impedance has been adjusted from 8Ω to 6Ω, making the amplifier compatible with a greater variety of loudspeakers. Also, since a true dual-mono configuration would be impractical in such a compact amplifier, Unison Research designed a new “Quasi-Dual-Mono” power supply. In this configuration, the power transformer and first filter stage of the power supply are doubled, separating all pre-amp stages to allow for lower cross-talk and low distortion. Thanks to Unison Research's ability to design specialised transformers in house, the Simply Italy is able to have an output stage consisting of one EL34 in a single-ended ultra-linear configuration. This mode of operation for the output transformers allows the pentode EL34s to operate almost as if they were triodes. Furthermore, an additional toggle switch allows for an adjustment of negative feedback in the circuit. This means the sound character of the amplifier can be adjusted to suit specific types of music or listening environments. The appearance of the Simply Italy has undergone radical changes, when compared to the Simply Two. The front panel is a locally-sourced wood that's accented by contrasting wood inserts around the controls, that also acts as an anti-resonant support for the metal chassis. Then two stainless-steel bands beneath the valves add a touch of refinement, while additionally aiding performance by thermally isolating the valves from the electronic circuitry and output transformers. Finally, the control knobs are made from non-magnetic stainless-steel with a sufficient diameter and weight to provide a smooth 'flywheel' effect with excellent feel and rotational precision. The Simply Italy is supplied with an infra-red remote handset which allows for convenient control over input switching and the premium motorised volume pot from ALPS. The back panel is finished with four large gold-plated terminal connectors that allow any type of loudspeaker cable to be connected easily, alongside clearly marked RCA inputs for multiple audio sources.

When Unison Research decided to introduce a new, small integrated valve amplifier to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italy, we used the Simply Two as our inspiration???and named it the Simply Italy. The Simply Italy shares many of the design features of the Simply Two. Both are single-ended ultralinear Class A designs that produce 12 watts per channel. Another important aspect lies in the considerable cost reduction (a single chassis, less cabling, both for power supply and interconnects).

The design of an integrated amplifier is considerably more complex and critical that that of a  separate pre or power amplifier.  Consider for example the fundamental importance of avoiding interference between each single component and between each stage (power supply, control, preamplifier, power output). Our experience over many years in designing and producing integrated amplifiers has enabled us along the way to create models which have become highly-valued classic pieces;  one example amongst many being the famous Unison Research ABSOLUTE.

Compared to its predecessor the Simply Two, the new  SIMPLY ITALY presents a number of modifications and changes,  however it maintains the same musical balance, functionality and is still extremely reliable. The output power - approximately 12 watts per channel - remains the same, however the output impedance is now 6-Ohms, making the amplifier suitable for use with both 4-Ohm and 8 Ohm loudspeakers.

The appearance in design, as noted, has undergone a radical change. The wood detailing is now confined to the front panel, but embellished by the addition of contrasting circular inserts , also of wood, which give a more attractive look to the controls.

Two satin stainless-steel bands beneath the valves add a touch of refinement, and also assist the thermic isolation of the electronic circuit and output transformers which gives a clear benefit to sound quality and overall reliability of the amplifier.

All amplifying stages are strictly valve-based, and the  circuit design adopted ensures that all the valves operate in pure Class-A.

Since the very beginning Unison Research has dedicated itself to the design, development and manufacture of output transformers, conscious of the vital importance of these complex elements in the pursuit of the best sound quality. Very few manufacturers in the world can boast of being able to produce high-quality transformers. Thanks in large measure to these particular transformers it has been possible to create an output stage for Simply Italy consisting of one EL34 in single-ended ultra linear configuration. Indeed this mode of operation is made possible by a particular development of the output transformers which in practice allows the pentode EL34s to operate almost as if they were triodes.

The preamp and driver stage of the power output is entrusted to ECC82 twin triodes. These valves provide excellent linearity and an almost complete absence of uneven order harmonic distortion.

The first amplifying triode of the input stage has zero feedback, both global and local. To obtain this, the classic cathode auto-bias circuit was eliminated and replaced by ionic bias, the only type able to guarantee absence of feedback and minimum phase rotation of the amplified signal.

It is interesting to note that this allows the possibility to choose the level of overall feedback of the amplifier, which in turn provides a better interface with the loudspeaker, the cables and the listening environment.

The preamplifier valve filaments are DC - supplied in order to prevent any residual AC component from interacting with the signal to be amplified.

The same care and attention reserved for the amplifying stage design was also given to the power supply. The Sinfonia power-supply  transformer is not a normal toroidal transformer, but the result of a project aimed at reducing electrical loss and containing dispersed magnetic flux.

The ideal power supply would be dual-mono, a solution however requiring space and adding weight. In the Simply Italy a type of power supply which might be called  Quaso-Dual-Mono has been adopted. In fact, apart from the power transformer and first filter stage the power supply is doubled, separating all preamp stages to the benefit of low crosstalk and low distortion.

The Simply Italy is supplied with an infra-red remote handset which allows the user to interface with the microchip control circuit; this manages control of analogue volume via an ALPS motorized potentiometer of the prestige RK27 series.

Four large gold-plated terminal connectors  allow any kind of loudspeaker cable to be used, and the loudspeakers can be between 4 and 8 ohms impedance.

In the Simply Italy nothing has been left to chance; the control knobs for example, turned from non-magnetic stainless-steel of large diameter and weight give a smooth flywheel effect  with excellent `feel` and rotational precision. The wood parts, important for the aesthetic design also play an important role in damping chassis resonance, and thus assist the delicate electronic parts, valves etc to perform at their best.

The adoption of refined circuit solutions which are out of necessity, complex; the generous size of components such as capacitors and transformers, and the decision to make Simply Italy a very compact amplifier have required that special attention in this project be paid to the chassis and internal layout.

As in all Unison Research projects, great care has been taken with the fundamentals such as power-supply track sizing, careful routing of both earthing and signal runs; the overall robustness, the ease of  build and servicing, and the provision of adequate ventilation for the internal circuit.

To ensure the best performance and best reliability over time of all the components used in Simply Italy have been carefully chosen and selected, from resistors, many of which are anti-inductive, to electrolytic capacitors, valve sockets in pure ceramic, to the printed circuit boards in vetronite.

Problem with a Unison Research Simply Italy amp

HI everyone! I hope that you may be able to solve a mystery for me. A few months ago while I was listening to my system, I noticed the distinct smell of burning plastic. After running all over the house, check outlets and power strips, my nose brought me to my Unison Research Simply Italy tube amp. The music was still playing, and everything still sounded great, but the smell was definitely emanating from the amp, so I shut it down. The next day I opened it up and took a look around to see if maybe a wire burned out or something. What I found was the large resistor (R30R) was discolored and appeared to heat the PCB board up which was causing the smell. I took it to a great shop in NJ, and their tech said that it was a loose tube socket. Apparently that can cause issues that would load that particular resistor. Everything was fine for a month, then it happened again. Before I take it back in to the shop, I thought I'd throw a lifeline out to y'all and see if anyone's had this problem before. The one thing I'm wondering about is the sub woofer. I have an additional pair of speaker cables running off of the taps in the back of the amp that are connected to a B&W subwoofer. Could that be causing problems? I got the sub from a friend who had it wired up the same way to his Aranov tube amp (four KT88 amp non-integrated). I didn't think that the subwoofer was supposed to be adding any additional load to the amplifier, right? As an experiment, I just plugged the amp back in to my system without the sub attached to see if I can recreate the smell. Don't worry- I'm babysitting it ;-) The other detail is that I swapped the EL34s for a pair of KT77s. The manufacturer says it's a fine thing to do... Any insight or experiments to try are welcomed! It looks like the resistor is tight against the plastic connector,normally higher wattage resistors are elevated away from the board,and have clearance around them to avoid heat damage to the surrounding components

That and the socket soldered directly onto the PCB; and they say vintage amps need maintenance. Also vintage amps were often supplied with a schematic, while it seems that Unison Research does not, at least not on their website. Bassphil, do you have a soldering iron and do you want to work on the amp yourself? Is it still dear any kind of guarantee?

If one end of your overheating resistor is connected to pin 8 of the EL34 tube it is part of the cathode bias (I think) and is rated at 5W. Replacing yours with one of the same value (I can't see from your photo) rated at more than 5W and mounted so that there is space between it and the surface of the board may solve the overheating problem.  

Thanks for the comments guys! s-petersen: The resistor is elevated, but you're right- it's tucked up against that plastic connector. However, you'd think that every Simply Italy would be having this problem is it was an air circulation problem, right? I can't find any problems with this amp online. Apparently they're amazingly solid. Dandy: I am very handy with a soldering iron. I've assembled 500 series microphone preamps (PCB board stuff) many times, though I'm not good with a schematic.... What do you have in mind? New resistor? Is it possible that the resistor just went bad? If so, think I can get away with cutting out the old resistor and soldering the new resistor to the old legs? That would be super easy. If I have to completely remove the old resistor, well, that's going to be a major tear down... The subwoofer wouldn't be causing this problem, right?

They picked a 5 watt resistor because it is going to get hot , and it is poor practice to place it where it is at especially near that nylon connector . Get a 330 ohm 7 to 10 watt resistor and remote locate it . 70 ma x 23 volts is 1.61 watts , a 4 times factor would be 6.44 watts  

I would do as battradio says. If desoldering the old resistor is tough, try cutting out the old resistor (is it 330 ohms?) and soldering in a bigger one there or remotely, where the heat dissipation is not damaging. I don't think the sub has anything to do with it, but the KT77s might have pushed this resistor too far. I don't know the theory well enough to be sure.

Okay, thanks everyone! I'll cut that resistor off of it's legs and solder in a bigger one- and bend it away from that plastic connector so it can get a bit more circulation! I'll remember to report back with the outcome. It will probably take a month or so...  

1.6W in a 5W resistor isn't problematic. The root cause of this problem needs to be addressed, especially if the power tube grid contact is opening up at the socket.  

Thanks for stepping in Mike. Should Bassphil take the amp back to the tech before replacing the resistor?  

Thanks Binary Mike! I decided to open her up today and take a closer look at everything again. The tube socket solders are now solid (apparently they were loose before, which I had taken care of the first time this happened). I called a very good friend- an amp tech/whiz, and talked about it with him for a while. I checked the ohm value of the discolored resistor against it's counterpart in the left channel. They're only 10ohms apart, which was in spec. Both resistors look like they've been soldered onto existing legs, which is interesting. He suggested that it could have been a change mid production... The problem resistor was really close to that wire harness, as you can see in the photo. Since it seems to still be in spec, I decided to try an experiment before I start swapping parts. I was able to gently bend it away from that harness to give it more air. It is still positioned fairly well over those venting holes in the PCB. Then I buttoned her back up, set her back in her place and tried to give the amp a little more air space on the sides. I even jacked it up a bit, placing little blocks under the feet to help. Since it seems to be functioning fine otherwise, and these amps seem to be incredibly well designed with quality parts, I'm going to give it the benefit of doubt and assume that it was an air circulation problem. I'll monitor it closely and see what happens. If it happens again, I'll try a new resistor with longer legs, If it happens again after that, I'll be sending it back to company and see what they say. One thing my friend suggested is that resistor could be over heating due to voltage fluctuations, which would really makes sense to me since it was around 7pm-ish both times it happened. That's prime time here in the Bronx... It would help to explain why, after having the loose tube socket fixed, it was completely fine for over a month before acting up again.  

Suggest you swap the power tubes at least, so you have a chance to identify this problem when the symptom shows up again. If the amp operates normally for long periods of time but intermittently makes a stink, then I doubt if any progress is possible by fiddling with the cathode resistor. Something is causing the power tube to conduct excessive current. If it's not the tube itself, then it's probably a bad socket or leaky C6 grid coupling cap. That's more likely if the cap is made with snake oil.

Hi everyone! So, I have finally fixed this dang amp. In the end I decided to take it to an authorized Unison Research repair shop in NJ- Affiliated Electronics. As soon as I brought it in and showed him the resistor in question, he disappeared into the back room and brought out another circuit board from another Unison Research amp that had the same problem. Apparently there was a possible production run issue. He said that he had to order a brand new main PCB from the company, which took a few weeks. I guess it was also considered an upgrade... That said, I opened it up and noticed that the PCB that has the bad resistor is the same physical board. I can see the old burn marks. Maybe there's another PCB that he replaced on the other side of that board? You can see that he replaced the large resistor that was heating up before, and added another one to it on its back (also on the other channel, of course) as well as replaced R26R (and L). I have to say that it does sound better than I remember it. Oh, and he also told me not to use the KT77s in this amp. Well, he said that I "probably shouldn't because they may have created the problem, but I'm not sure so it's safer to stick with the EL34s." Now the damn remote control doesn't work. I brought it with me to the shop in case something changed and it worked there.... Time to google... I hope this thread helps someone else some day!

I had the exact same problem with my Simply Italy: those resistors and capacitors started overheating (see image), there was some noise, an ugly smell and the channel stopped working. In my case the most probable cause was a bad EL34. While trying to figure ir out, I swapped the tubes and extended the problem to the other channel. Not having any technical background at all, I believe that a short circuit in the speaker cable was the first culprit. I too replaced the cap and resistor, and the amp worked again... for some minutes. And after a while it started smelling again. This is why I had the hunch it had to do with the tube. I replaced it, put a new resistor and so far everything is fine... for the moment. This was a couple of months ago. So my question -one year late: did you try replacing the tubes after your first fix, back then? Could it have been as simple as that? (If you are right and I have a bad board, I'm in real trouble: I live in Argentina where there's no official Unison service). And, since we are there: what brand of tubes are you using? I'm trying a couple of Psvane 12au7. They are really clean, detailed and dynamic. Much more than my previous Tung Sol. But -alas- they tend to be too bright, too harsh on the trebles... So I could use some recommendation from a real life user! Cheers.

Hello , This is my first message on your forum. I stumbled over your messages as I have a problem with my Unison Research Simply Italy. I need to replace a resistor but unfortunately, I can not read the value. The resistor is placed approx. 1/2 inch below the big 7 Watt resistor. The resistor is very well visible within the first photo you attached. Hope some help is possible. Reg

I'll add my comment to this old thread for anyone searching this subject in the future. I contacted Unison Research Technical Department, concerning using KT77 in the Simply Italy and this was their response: "We discourage the use of other tubes than EL34 in Simply Italy." I'm guessing here, but the auto bias uses a resistor that has a value matched to the valve properties and while the KT77 is similar in many respects, it is not an EL34. I have seen the same type of damage on a Graaf 50/50 (KT88) that uses the same auto bias set up. I concluded someone had tried rolling KT120/KT150 in there with similar results. Many people use KT77 as a replacement for EL34 in other amplifiers without an issue. I think it comes down to how the bias is adjusted to suit. In the case of the Simply Italy, it is fixed and would require resistor changes, don't ask me what the correct value would be, as I'm not too technical.
