PhD Programs
NYU Shanghai offers various opportunities for students to pursue advanced doctoral study and research culminating in the award of a PhD degree from New York University. These opportunities are made possible through unique collaborations with other schools and departments of NYU, including the NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science, the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Currently, we are recruiting for outstanding PhD candidates in the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Neural Science, Physics, Public Administration, Sociology, and Transportation Planning and Engineering.
Students accepted into these programs normally begin by spending their first year in New York City for foundational PhD coursework, completed alongside other NYU PhD students in their discipline, before transitioning full-time to research groups led by NYU Shanghai faculty.
All students are supported through a generous financial aid program - the NYU Shanghai Doctoral Fellowship, which includes scholarships covering NYU tuition and fees, annual stipends, travel funds, and enrollment in an international health insurance plan.
In these programs, students receive a world-class NYU doctoral education, along with a truly distinctive global experience across multiple NYU campuses. In Shanghai, students benefit from NYU Shanghai’s cutting-edge research environment, where new world-class platforms for discovery and exploration, training, and international collaboration are being pioneered, all while living in one of the world’s most incomparable cities.

Quantitative Finance (MS)
Program description.
The Master of Science in Quantitative Finance is intended to prepare pre-experience students with strong skills in mathematics, engineering, science, technology, finance and business for the rapidly evolving professional marketplace in the field of finance. It achieves this by leveraging key technical interests and capabilities of successful applicants into the modern financial architecture and its central functions such as trading, market and product design, underwriting and securitization, payments and settlement, derivatives, asset management, risk management, corporate financial management and a range of technical innovations that are evolving in these areas.
A high level of rigor is embedded in the MSQF program. It is targeted toward smart, disciplined and dependable students who have the ability to climb a steep learning curve and a well-developed capability for creative and critical thinking. This is the skill set in demand in the new world of finance, from the biggest and most diverse financial institutions to specialized financial boutiques and end-users such as nonfinancial corporations and asset managers. To succeed, market participants need to know how financial instruments are designed, priced, traded and deployed in a highly competitive and unforgiving market environment.
Applications for the NYU Stern - NYU Shanghai Master of Science in Quantitative Finance are accepted for the Summer start term only.
See MS in Quantitative Finance for admission requirements and instructions specific to this program.

About STEM-Designation
The Management PhD program has STEM-designation due to its strong focus on quantitative and management sciences. STEM-designated degrees offer students the possibility of academic advancement and employment security.
The STEM-designation is particularly beneficial for international students looking for work in the U.S. Traditionally, with an F-1 visa, graduates are eligible for up to 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) once a degree program is completed. With the STEM-designation, students can apply to extend the OPT period for an additional 24 months.
Areas of Specialization
While each area of study has individual requirements, the Management PhD program generally consists of two years of classes followed by two years of dissertation research.

- Management Information Systems
- Marketing
- Supply Chain and Business Analytics (not currently accepting applications)
Note: We make every effort to update the specialization pages, however we recommend contacting the concentration coordinators with questions about program-specific requirements.
Students admitted to the doctoral program receive a graduate research/teaching asssistantship and waiver of graduate tuition for a maximum of four years, conditional on satisfactory performance, as determined by a member of the PhD program faculty.
- Students may receive up to $29,500 in annual funding. The assistantship stipend amount for Fall 2023 is $21,000 annually. This is supplemented by a potential $6,000 faculty supervised summer research assistantship, and a fee scholarship of approximately $2,500 per year (to help offset the cost of broad-based feed not covered by the tution scholarship).
- Assistantships require funded students to assist faculty in their teaching or research for 20 hours per week.

Finance focuses on the financial structure and problems of corporations, on the manner in which financial securities are priced, and on the organization and operation of markets and financial institutions. As a scholar in finance, you might examine how conflict of interest affects corporate financial policies, how competitive the NASDAQ trading system is, how to detect price bubbles, or how investor psychology affects asset prices in a systematic way. Our finance faculty offers strong support for such explorations of market microstructure, corporate finance, asset pricing, and international finance. The finance faculty has broad interests, and students can develop analytic or empirical interests under their guidance.
