Writing an entrepreneurship research paper can be an exciting and rewarding experience. However, it can also be a daunting task, especially if you are new to the field of entrepreneurship research. Here are some tips and guidelines to help you write a successful entrepreneurship research paper:

  • Choose a narrow and specific topic : The first step in writing an entrepreneurship research paper is to choose a narrow and specific topic that is relevant to the field. Avoid broad topics that are difficult to cover in a single research paper. Instead, choose a topic that is focused and specific, and that allows you to conduct in-depth research.
  • Conduct extensive research : Once you have chosen your topic, it’s time to conduct extensive research. This involves gathering information from a variety of sources, such as academic journals, books, and online resources. Make sure to keep track of your sources and take detailed notes.
  • Develop a strong thesis statement : Your thesis statement is the main argument of your research paper. It should be clear, concise, and specific. Make sure to provide a clear and concise overview of your research topic and the main arguments you will be making in your paper.
  • Use relevant and reliable sources : When conducting research for your entrepreneurship research paper, it’s important to use relevant and reliable sources. This includes academic journals, books, and reputable online sources. Make sure to cite all sources correctly using the appropriate citation style.
  • Organize your paper : Once you have gathered all of your research and developed your thesis statement, it’s time to organize your paper. Make sure to create an outline that includes an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. This will help you stay on track and ensure that your paper flows logically.
  • Use clear and concise language : When writing your entrepreneurship research paper, it’s important to use clear and concise language. Avoid using jargon or technical terms that may be difficult for your audience to understand. Instead, use plain language and explain any complex concepts or terms.
  • Edit and revise your paper : Once you have finished writing your entrepreneurship research paper, it’s important to edit and revise it. This involves checking for spelling and grammatical errors, as well as making sure that your paper flows smoothly and logically. Consider having a peer or mentor review your paper before submitting it.
  • Follow the appropriate citation style : When citing sources in your entrepreneurship research paper, it’s important to follow the appropriate citation style. This includes APA, MLA, Chicago/Turabian, or Harvard style. Make sure to follow the guidelines for your specific citation style to ensure that your citations are correct.
  • Use visuals to enhance your paper : Visuals, such as graphs, charts, and tables, can be a great way to enhance your entrepreneurship research paper. They can help to illustrate complex concepts and data in a clear and concise way. Make sure to use visuals sparingly and only when they add value to your paper.
  • Seek feedback and revision : Finally, it’s important to seek feedback on your entrepreneurship research paper and be open to revision. Consider having a peer or mentor review your paper and provide feedback. Use this feedback to revise and improve your paper before submitting it.

Can AI and Machine Learning Help Park Rangers Prevent Poaching?

Globally there are too few park rangers to prevent the illegal trade of wildlife across borders, or poaching. In response, Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) was created by a coalition of conservation organizations to take historical data and create geospatial mapping tools that enable more efficient deployment of rangers. SMART had demonstrated significant improvements in patrol coverage, with some observed reductions in poaching. Then a new predictive analytic tool, the Protection Assistant for Wildlife Security (PAWS), was created to use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to try to predict where poachers would be likely to strike. Jonathan Palmer, Executive Director of Conservation Technology for the Wildlife Conservation Society, already had a good data analytics tool to help park rangers manage their patrols. Would adding an AI- and ML-based tool improve outcomes or introduce new problems? Harvard Business School senior lecturer Brian Trelstad discusses the importance of focusing on the use case when determining the value of adding a complex technology solution in his case, “SMART: AI and Machine Learning for Wildlife Conservation.”

Entrepreneurship as Experimentation

Entrepreneurship research is on the rise, but many questions about its fundamental nature still exist. We argue that entrepreneurship is about experimentation: the probabilities of success are low, extremely skewed, and unknowable until an investment is made. At a macro level, experimentation by new firms underlies the Schumpeterian notion of creative destruction. However, at a micro level, investment and continuation decisions are not always made in a competitive Darwinian contest. Instead, a few investors make decisions that are impacted by incentive, agency, and coordination problems, often before a new idea even has a chance to compete in a market. We contend that costs and constraints on the ability to experiment alter the type of organizational form surrounding innovation and influence when innovation is more likely to occur. These factors not only govern how much experimentation is undertaken in the economy, but also the trajectory of experimentation, with potentially very deep economic consequences.

Andreessen Horowitz

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), a venture capital firm launched in 2009, has quickly broken into the VC industry's top ranks, in terms of its ability to invest in Silicon Valley's most promising startups. The case recounts the firm's history; describes its co-founders' motivations and their strategy for disrupting an industry in the midst of dramatic structural change; and asks whether a16z's success to date has been due to its novel organization structure. a16z's 22 investment professionals are supported by 43 recruiting and marketing specialists—an "operating team" that is an order of magnitude larger than that of any other VC firm. Furthermore, the operating team aims to not only assist a16z portfolio companies, but also to be broadly helpful to all parties in the Silicon Valley ecosystem, including search firms, journalists, PR agencies, and Fortune 500 executives. The bet: by providing "no-strings-attached" help to ecosystem partners, the partners might someday reciprocate by steering founders seeking funding to a16z. The case closes by asking whether a16z should seek to double its scale over the next years.

Raising Startup Capital

Entrepreneurs typically focus their full energies on business-building. But raising capital is a core part of building a valuable business. Developing expertise in raising capital is more than a necessary evil, it is a competitive weapon. Master it and you will be in a better position to make your company a massive success. But how do you finance a new venture? In this note, I will try to help answer this question by addressing the following topics: Types of funding. The two major types of startup capital are equity funding and debt funding although there are a few hybrid flavors as well. Sources of funding. These include venture capital firms, angel investors, crowd-funding, and accelerators/incubators. What investors look for. Each source has a different funding process and set of criteria which you need to understand before seeking funding from that source. The mechanics of equity funding. Seeking and securing funding involves setting amounts, agreeing to terms, and defining relationships.

The Consequences of Entrepreneurial Finance: Evidence from Angel Financings

This paper documents that ventures that are funded by two successful angel groups experience superior outcomes to rejected ventures: they have improved survival, exits, employment, patenting, web traffic, and financing. We use strong discontinuities in angel funding behavior over small changes in their collective interest levels to implement a regression discontinuity approach. We confirm the positive effects for venture operations, with qualitative support for a higher likelihood of successful exits. On the other hand, there is no difference in access to additional financing around the discontinuity. This might suggest that financing is not a central input of angel groups.

The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art

Since its opening in Beijing in November 2007 as the first non-profit art center in China, UCCA had been operating with the mission to "promote the continued development of the Chinese art scene, foster international exchange, and showcase the latest in art and culture to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year." For the past six years, UCCA had worked with more than 100 artists and designers to present 87 art exhibitions and 1,826 public programs to over 1.8 million visitors, including many important leaders from all over the world. Given the context of the economic and political environment in the rapidly changing Chinese art market, the founders and senior management of UCCA wondered what they could do to achieve growth and financial viability while continuing to realize their mission.

The Promise of Microfinance and Women's Empowerment: What Does the Evidence Say?

The microfinance revolution has transformed access to financial services for low-income populations worldwide. As a result, it has become one of the most talked-about innovations in global development in recent decades. However, its expansion has not been without controversy. While many hailed it as a way to end world poverty and promote female empowerment, others condemned it as a disaster for the poor. Female empowerment has often been seen as one of the key promises of the industry. In part, this is based on the fact that more than 80% of its poorest clients, i.e., those who live on less than $1.25/day, are women. This paper discusses what we have learned so far about the potential and limits of microfinance and how insights from research and practice can help inform the industry's current products, policies and future developments.

Initiatives & Projects

Our long tradition of research in Entrepreneurship goes back to the 1930's and 1940's with the “the father of venture capitalism,” General Georges Doriot, and Joseph Schumpeter’s theory of innovation as a process of “creative destruction.” Building on our intellectual roots, our scholars come from disciplines including economics, finance, sociology, strategy, business history, management, and social entrepreneurship. A number of our faculty come from practice as venture capitalists and start-up founders. We focus our research on the identification and pursuit of entrepreneurial opportunities; domestic and international funding of entrepreneurial endeavors; innovation, particularly technological innovation in international ventures; the environments in which entrepreneurs make decisions; and social entrepreneurship. As our research contributes new insights, we are advancing the world’s understanding of complex entrepreneurial issues and helping to increase the entrepreneurial success of our students and practitioners worldwide.

The Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship and the Social Enterprise Initiative encourage innovation to address the large-scale issues that beset society.

Contemporary topics in entrepreneurship research

The purpose of this course is to introduce PhD candidates to topics studied in Entrepreneurship (ENT) research. The focus will be on contemporary Entrepreneurship research, meaning topics discussed in the last 5 years in academic articles published in top Entrepreneurship (Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal) and General Management journals (e.g., Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly). On occasion, the course may employ articles published in related fields (e.g., Innovation, Information Systems, Psychology, Strategic Management) if the respective articles are discussing topics relevant for entrepreneurship research.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

The course objectives are twofold. First, PhD candidates will become familiar with the topics and debates currently active in the ENT research community, which may support them in choosing or refining the topic of their own doctoral dissertation. Second, PhD candidates will develop an understanding, in the broader sense, of what makes a paper publishable in top academic journals, and learn to critically assess academic articles (e.g., the relevance of the theoretical gap, use of theories, suitability of the methods for a specific research question).

Teaching and learning activities

Overall the course will have 8 sessions spread over 4 days (one session in the morning and one in the afternoon), each on a different entrepreneurship topic. The 8 topics I consider covering are the following:

  • entrepreneurial decision-making
  • entrepreneurial finance
  • entrepreneurial/co-founder teams
  • social entrepreneurship
  • economics of entrepreneurship
  • methodological advances in entrepreneurship research
  • new venture creation
  • new venture growth and failure

COMPULSORY ELEMENTS

The course will take place face-to-face and attendance is mandatory for all participants. The Course Director assesses if and how absence may be compensated.

The sessions follow a “flipped classroom” model, where PhD candidates are expected to read the articles beforehand, and sessions focus on presenting and discussing these materials. Because the course is set as an intensive 4-day course, PhD candidates need to read all the articles before the course starts, reading carefully all the articles during the course days is not feasible.

EXAMINATION

Students are assessed based on

  • active classroom discussions of the articles students have to read before the course starts
  • presentation(s) of two or three articles assigned by the course instructor (depending on the number of students registered to the course)
  • a proposal for a paper on one of the 8 main topics/themes discussed in the course (maximum 5000 words including references) due one month after the last session of the course.

LITERATURE AND OTHER TEACHING MATERIALS

22-24 academic articles on entrepreneurship topics published recently (i.e. last 5 years) or “in press” in top academic journals (downloadable from SSE Library’s databases).

Please see below a few examples of articles considered for inclusion (the list is neither exhaustive nor definitive):

Simple Outline Of An Entrepreneurship Paper

So, what is entrepreneurship? It can be defined as the creation or the extraction of value by taking risks. In simple to understand terms, entrepreneurship is the ability to start a new business, along with everything this entails: financing, planning, organizing, and running the new company. Often, an entrepreneur will start a business in a new field, taking risks that go beyond what is normally expected from starting a business. The main goal of the entrepreneur is to make profit.

But what about the entrepreneurship paper? How does it look like? Well, we recommend students to use the 5 paragraph essay structure. Here is what such a research paper should contain:

An introduction. This is where you introduce the topic, as well as your thesis statement. Don’t forget to make it punchy. 3 body paragraphs. Each paragraph should discuss a single important idea. Usually, you will start the paragraph with a statement and then use the rest of the paragraph to support it. Optionally, you can include several other paragraphs. The first 3 paragraphs are mandatory, but you can add more. A conclusion. As you’ve probably guessed it, this is where you’ll summarize everything and include your call to action. References/Works Cited. This chapter is where you list all the works you have used during your research. Everything you’ve cited should have an entry in this chapter.

Writing an entrepreneurship essay is not difficult. However, if you are aiming for a top grade, you should make sure that the topic you choose is unique and interesting. This is precisely why we have created this list of 192 original entrepreneurship topics for research:

Annual conference challenges presenters to dismantle racial injustice and construct educational possibilities

The 2024 American Educational Research Association Conference to feature over five-dozen USC Rossier scholars.

AERA 2024 Philadelphia

USC Rossier researchers are heading to the City of Brotherly Love for the 2024 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Conference , the largest convening of education researchers in the country. From April 11 to 14, USC Rossier faculty and doctoral students combined will be participating in over 80 presentations at the AERA conference.

The theme this year is “Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action.” The conference asks and challenges the education research community to “engage in a massive undertaking of attending to the simultaneous act of dismantling racial injustice and constructing educational possibilities across P–20 systems,” according to AERA President Tyrone Howard, who recently spoke at USC Rossier’s Research for Impact conference earlier in March.

With 13,000 AERA members attending each year, the conference offers scholars the opportunity to learn from each other, discover the latest research and foster professional relationships. USC Rossier will be represented by 62 faculty, doctoral students and recent alumni. Topics range from AI in higher education and STEM in middle schools to the role of student-teacher race and the effects of racism on undergraduate mental health.

Associate Professor Huriya Jabbar , whose research uses sociological and critical theories to examine how market-based ideas in PK–12 and higher education shape inequality, opportunity and democracy in the U.S., will be participating in eight discussions during the conference. Of the eight, she is one of the chairs for the panel Constructing New Possibilities for Racialized Organizations Theory in Educational Research . This panel brings together papers that use and build on Ray's (2019) Racialized Organizational Theory, which is useful to understand how racism is embedded in the structures, systems, routines and everyday practices of schooling. The papers illustrate ways in which scholars can operationalize and concretize a complex theory so that future scholarship can tackle critical questions about educational organizations, disrupting the field’s historical “race neutral” approach.

Matthew Coopilton (formerly Hamilton), a 2023 USC Rossier alum, is chair for Critical Game Literacies For the Abolition of White Supremacy and Hetero-Patriarchy panel. The panel will share theoretical frameworks and empirical findings around how young people develop critical game literacy skills. The panel will focus on how Black, Latine and LGBTQIA+ gamers have critiqued systemic racism and hetero-patriarchy and playfully imagined futures where they are abolished. The papers will also propose ways that educators can design learning environments to support critical game literacies.

USC Rossier will host a reception to celebrate scholars —faculty and doctoral students—for their recent achievements. Among those to be honored at the reception include Gale Sinatra for being named USC Distinguished Professor, Shaun Harper for his 2024 American College Personnel Association Contribution to Higher Education Award and Tracy Poon Tambascia for her 2024-2024 American Council on Education Fellowship. Additional awards and honors to be announced at the reception.

Q&A with STPP Certificate student and FAS Policy Entrepreneur Award winner Alexa White

Photo of Alexa White

Alexa White , an STPP Certificate and Ph.D. student in ecology and evolutionary biology, was given the inaugural  FAS Policy Entrepreneur Award by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) at a ceremony in Washington, DC on November 16, 2023. According to FAS, “This award recognizes initiative to bring science and technology evidence to government policy.” Others honored at the ceremony for public service included filmmaker Christopher Nolan; Senators Chuck Schumer and Todd Young; and Dr. Alondra Nelson; Harold F. Linder Professor, Institute for Advanced Study.

Ms. White is the co-founder, along with  Adria Peterkin , of  Aya Research Institute , a non-profit think tank dedicated to a two-fold mission, according to its website, “(1) to provide innovative and practical recommendations for current environmental, climate, and energy justice issues that inform U.S. federal policy, and (2) to increase the number of scientists and engineers engaged in community-led research.”

What do you want people to know about the work that won the Policy Entrepreneur Award?

The Policy Entrepreneur Award recognized Aya's efforts in integrating environmental justice into policy frameworks and the need for more people of color on science and engineering environmental justice projects. Our work, particularly the Justice40 tracker and report, has been instrumental in ensuring that 40% of the benefits of federal investments in climate and clean energy reach disadvantaged communities. This initiative exemplifies our commitment to bridging the gap between science and policy to foster more equitable and sustainable environmental practices.

How did it feel to have your work recognized in this way?

Receiving this award was both humbling and affirming. It underscored the importance of our mission at Aya Research Institute and validated the years of dedicated research and advocacy in environmental justice. This recognition fuels my and my co-founder  Adria Peterkin's  determination to continue addressing the pressing issues of climate change and inequality.

Why did you decide to get an STPP certificate, and how has it contributed to your career path?

Pursuing an STPP (Science, Technology, and Public Policy) certificate was a strategic decision to enhance my understanding of the intersection between science and policy. This program has been pivotal in shaping my approach to research, particularly in understanding how scientific findings can be translated into effective and equitable policy decisions. It has provided me with the tools to better advocate for policy changes that are informed by scientific understanding and grounded in social justice.

Anything else you’d like to share about STPP and/or the award?

The STPP program's emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and its focus on the societal impacts of science and technology have been invaluable. It has allowed me to approach environmental justice from a multifaceted perspective, considering not just the ecological aspects but also the social, economic, and political dimensions.

What is next for the Aya Research Institute and for you?

As for the Aya Research Institute, we are continually expanding our research and outreach efforts. Our next launch will include our graduate fellowship program aimed at increasing the scientific and engineering capacities of grassroots environmental justice organizations nationwide. Our next steps involve deepening our understanding of community-engaged participatory research methodologies to further understand and address the challenges in environmental justice and climate justice technologies. Personally, I am looking forward to furthering my work in this field, exploring new collaborations, and continuing to influence policy for environmental justice.
