Creating video content

Video and audio are excellent mediums for creating fresh and engaging content for your students. Video is especially good for communicating complex visual information online, and it will play an important part of any good blended course. However, with so many hardware and software options available, it is sometimes difficult to know where to start.

On this page you will find a range of self-help resources to help you get the most out of the hardware and software available to you.

Types of Video

The type of video you choose to create will often have a significant impact on how long it takes to record and edit - and how effective it is as a learning resource. Five of the most popular video types are listed below, along with their strengths and weaknesses. For blended or fully online courses, we recommend you use a variety of different video types in your teaching to help keep your content fresh.

Talking head videos are those where you speak directly to the student, helping put a face to your name and creating a social presence that allows students to get to know you.

Talking head videos can provide a brief description of what students will learn from your online content, explain why it is important, and how it fits with later assignments and assessments. Use them to signpost students to important content elsewhere, define relevant keywords, and provide a basic outline of their learning journey.

Narrated PowerPoint presentations form a substantial part of many blended and online courses. They use the familiar teaching technique of pairing slides with a lecture to explain a topic or concept.

However, long presentations are very difficult for students to watch and stay engaged with. Try to mix up content by using visually interesting slides and graphics. In addition, videos that include  you  talking with the slides are always more engaging than slides alone. Your presence is important to students, so always try to include an introductory talking head or thumbnail 'picture-in-picture'.

Encourage students to take notes as they follow your videos, and remind them that they can pause and even return to videos later if they need to.

In lecture theatres, it is common to use visualisers to capture handwriting and annotations, particularly in mathematical disciplines. Visualiser videos replicate this experience and can help draw and keep the learner’s attention for longer than standard presentations.

If you would like to produce this type of video content, you have three options:

  • You can use standard ReCap lecture recording facilities to record live visualiser demonstrations from one of the  200+ ReCap enabled teaching spaces on campus (recommended)
  • You can purchase a portable visualiser to use at home or in your office
  • You can use a mobile phone to create a home-made visualiser

A further alternative would be to create a digital document and then use a tablet or screen recording tool to capture your commentary and annotations.

Screen recordings capture the contents of your Windows or Mac computer screen or mobile device, typically with accompanying audio and narration. They are useful for guiding students through applications and websites.

You can also use a touch or stylus-enabled device (e.g. Samsung Galaxy Tab, Microsoft Surface, or iPad) to create a screen recording. These are perfect devices for capturing handwriting, creating worked maths examples, and annotating documents.

Hint: you can use  Microsoft Whiteboard , PowerPoint, or  OneNote  for your blank canvas.

Powtoon is an online, cloud-based animation platform for creating visually impressive animated presentations and explainer videos. You can create videos for free, but to remove Powtoon branding, you will need to purchase a personal subscription.

Recommended tool for creating simple character animations: PowToon .

Thinking beyond video

Video is an effective educational tool and offers a rich learning experience for students. However, it is not a silver bullet. Video content is often passive and isn't always the best way for students to learn. Consider using online teaching techniques that encourage learners to actively engage with each other and construct their own meaning around information. 

When you do use video, provide students with opportunities to reinforce their learning using quizzes, discussion posts, and meaningful reflective activities.

Document Management

This is the first of 4 document management sessions, where you will be using some of the features of Word to format the content and layout of a document in preparation for producing your First Year Report. 

In part 3 of the 4 part document management series, advanced techniques are covered, including non-numbered headings as found in a thesis (e.g Abstract, Dedication, Acknowledgements), page layout, references and bibliographic tools, and some revision of previously covered skills.

National Student Survey 2013 • What is the National Student Survey? • An annual, anonymous survey of final year undergraduates, administered by Ipsos MORI • Asks you to provide feedback on learning, teaching and the student experience at NU and in your school or subject area • Results are publishednationally, and universities and subject areas are compared to one another • Provides crucial feedback to your school and subject area and affects future changes Newcastle University School of Chemistry

Student Opinion @ Newcastle University • The NSS is just one way of collecting student opinion. We ask you to provide feedback in a number of ways, including: • Module evaluations • Staff-Student Committees • Student representatives on School, Faculty and University committees • Focus groups and projects • The NSS is unique. • Unlike other sources of student feedback, which ask you for immediate feedback on a module/course/project/etc, the NSS asks you to summarise your experiences over your entire three- or four-year course.

How the NSS Works: The NSS asks 23 core questions (plus University specific questions) about: • Teaching, Assessment and feedback, Academic support, Organisation and management, Learning resources, Personal development, Students’ Union, Overall satisfaction, You should also provide free-text comments about your experiences and make any suggestions that you have for improvements. These comments are particularly valuable, since, unlike quantitative positive or negative results, they can tell staff exactly what aspects of the programme are going well or poorly. Please take these free-text comments seriously and provide as much information as you can about your experiences over your three- or four-year programme. Please don’t include the names of individual students or members of staff, however; these will be deleted from your response if you do so.

What Your Response Means: • For each question/statement in the survey, you select a response between 1 (definitely disagree) and 5 (definitely agree). • Only scores of 4 and 5 are considered “positive” responses by the test-makers – and it is the percentage of students who score 4 or 5 that is presented for national comparisons. • You can also select “Not Applicable” if you feel that the question/statement does not apply to you. • Consider your responses carefully before selecting them – your opinion matters, and we want to know whether you feel negatively or positively about each aspect of your University experience.

Your Opinion Counts: In the University: • 24-hour opening of Robinson Library • Increased availability of computer clusters • Improved access to internet in University accommodation • New University policies on feedback turnaround time and feedback on exams NSS responses and free context comments have contributed to changes in the University and in your School.

Your opinion counts – nationally (and even internationally)! The responses to several NSS statements (including overall satisfaction) are published in Key Information Sets (KIS) on the Unistats website. This information is publicly available for anyone researching undergraduate programmes. To provide the most accurate reflection of students’ opinions, data should be published for each programme – otherwise, programmes are combined and the results are not as representative. For this to work, programmes need high participation! Each programme needs 23 respondents AND a 50% response rate to be published at the most specific level; small programmes with less than 23 students still need high participation to provide accurate representation at subject level. YOUR RESPONSE MATTERS.

When and how can you fill in the survey? The NSS survey at Newcastle University opens on 4 February 2013. You will receive an email from Ipsos MORI with a link to the survey. You can complete the survey online or on your smartphone. You can also go to www.thestudentsurvey.com

Extra Incentives for Participation(in addition to the importance of providing feedback!) For Schools - Compete against other Schools! The five subject areas with the highest response rates will win a cash prize to spend however their SSC sees fit – maybe to throw a pizza party, take a trip, or buy something that the student body needs. Prizes will be as follows: 1st - £500; 2nd - £400; 3rd - £300; 4th - £200; 5th - £100 For Individuals – Fifteen students who complete the survey will be chosen at random to receive £50 each.
