How to Plan a Successful Digital Marketing Capstone Project

By Christopher Hill

One of the benefits of the UVM Digital Marketing Fundamentals course is that students are exposed to a variety of digital marketing channels. This includes Social Media, Search Engine Optimization, Display, and Paid Advertising, Email Marketing, Mobile Marketing, and Analytics. Over the course of eight weeks, students learn the inner workings of these channels from instructors who actually work in those fields. All of this to prepare their capstone project, a presentation of a marketing plan that serves as the ultimate display of a student’s fundamental knowledge of digital marketing.

However, the question many potential students ask before starting the course is “How can I possibly plan, create, and build a marketing plan in just under eight weeks?”

What is the Capstone Project?

The assignment is simple: consider a problem facing a brand of the student’s choosing and build a multifaceted marketing campaign that they believe can solve it. Students are able to select any brand they desire, even the brand that they currently work for or plan to interview with in the future. They’re also able to choose the specific challenge for that brand that they want their eventual marketing plan to face. And it’s the selection of that challenge that begins to piece the puzzle together for students. Because the challenge chosen could impact the type of digital marketing campaign one would choose.

For example, a student who chooses a challenge of a “new product launch” might feel that the best marketing campaign for them would be a  product giveaway . Or a brand that needs to “increase customer loyalty” might be a good candidate to consider a  contest  or  mobile app . These options are provided to students when the class starts so it’s more of a match game than it is pulling something unknown from a hat. There is certainly nuance, but students have a lifeline in the Digital Marketing Fundamentals instructors who are there to help guide them.

capstone project digital marketing

The lovely part is, there are typically no wrong answers during the selection part of the process, with the most important thing being that a definitive brand, challenge, and campaign are chosen. However, there is a common trap that can derail the campaign discussion, and that is for a student to consider it good enough to simply say that they’ll use multiple marketing channels to market their brand better. This eliminates the focus for the student and therefore makes their job much harder. Rather than demonstrating the  correct and specific  use of the included marketing channels that are relevant for a particular campaign, they are instead only capable of showing a  general  use of the marketing channels, which isn’t what the capstone project is for.

Every capstone should feature more than one digital marketing channel, as a truly good marketing campaign typically does. It’s the goal of the course for students to learn when and how to use these marketing channels, which is why the initial selection process is so crucial.

Which Marketing Channels Should I Choose for my Capstone Project?

This is the biggest question for the students in Digital Marketing Fundamentals Professional Certificate . But it’s also one that students don’t need to have an answer for in the first week. As the course unfolds, there are a number of opportunities for students to learn about the various marketing channels. This includes the weekly live sessions where the instructors, subject matter experts in their field, touch on all the key takeaways and applications for that module’s channel. So students can file away tactics and use cases for their own capstone project.

But aside from this, one of the most basic ways for students to figure out which marketing channels they should use for their capstone is to consider the basics of their challenge and campaign. For example, if the challenge is to increase leads consider these questions: where is the brand currently getting leads? Do they have a submission form on their website? If it is, then that automatically opens the door for marketing channels like Search Engine Optimization and/or Paid Advertising, channels that to varying degrees rely on web pages for lead capturing. Do the brand’s social media pages link back to the website? Well, there is another channel for the student to consider.

capstone project digital marketing

Sometimes, it’s that simple to get started and if the student isn’t sure of where to begin, then the instructors are there to provide some firm direction and context.

So even though it seems daunting, the capstone project is actually one of the many elements of the Digital Marketing Fundamentals course that students will find rewarding. It helps them see the marketing landscape through the eyes of a seasoned digital marketer, while also giving them something tangible to include in their portfolios, should they find themselves on the job hunt . Going through this course can be one of the best ways to gain a working knowledge of a number of channels, as well as build a foundation for what could be your future career path.

There are 6 modules in this course

This four-week Capstone of the Digital Marketing Specialization is designed to help you apply the principles you have learned in the previous courses.

This capstone course is designed to give you hands-on experience in executing a digital marketing campaign for a fictitious firm selling electronics. In the previous courses on analytics and channels, you came up with strategies to identify a firm’s objectives, specify a few key ones, research alternatives to reaching the customer in their decision journey and finally propose a multi-channel digital marketing plan. In this capstone, you will execute a campaign, rather than creating another "plan". You will use an online simulation to do this. You will be a marketing manager for a firm selling digital cameras online through their webstore. You will be reviewing the products, pricing, margins, and historical sales. You will create a targeted ad campaign after researching appropriate keywords for the products you are selling. You will also review the basics of landing page design and search engine optimization. You will then create and execute an email campaign. Once these campaigns are executed, you get feedback on the KPI's such as revenue, profits, traffic, conversions. You will get an opportunity to redo this campaign, with new strategies, to improve your KPI's in the second round. This course is part of the iMBA offered by the University of Illinois, a flexible, fully-accredited online MBA at an incredibly competitive price. For more information, please see the Resource page in this course and onlinemba.illinois.edu.

To view the equation used to calculate your interest and monthly payments, check out this article HERE!

Depending on your program, we may offer loans with either an initial interest-only period while in class and for a few months after, a full deferral period while in class and for a few months after, or immediate full repayment.

For loans with an interest-only period or immediate full repayment, your first payment is due one month after your loan is funded.

Climb's standard loan tenor is 36 months, but you can pay any time before that, as there is no pre-payment penalty. You can repay your 3-year loan in 3 years or in 1 day.

Climb's goal is to make sure that your monthly payments stay low and affordable, which is why we give you the option to choose your term length when you apply.

Master’s students can choose between a 2-year or a 3-year repayment term.

Doctoral students can choose between a 4-year or a 5-year repayment term.

This amount is mentioned in your loan agreement.

In order not to fall behind on your Climb loan payments, you can request a deferral of payments on your loan. A deferment will allow you to temporarily reduce your monthly loan payment amount.

9. Promoting Your Capstone Project Using Social Marketing Techniques

Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast commercial and social marketing objectives.
  • Explain the role of social marketing in capstone project development and implementation.
  • Develop a small-scale marketing campaign for your capstone project.

This chapter describes how social marketing campaigns can be used to promote your capstone project and recruit participants.  Although social marketing is usually targeted to large audiences the concepts of social marketing introduced in this chapter can be used to promote your capstone project and encourage participant recruitment.

Introduction

One of the first steps in the capstone experience is to identify an overall group of people, also referred to as a population.  Once a population is identified, you must devise a plan for subject selection, inviting members to participate.  This process may involve written invitations, telephone calls, or personal contacts in a clinical setting.  A key aspect of successful capstone implementation is the recruitment of participants.  Without project participation, the program will fail; therefore, participant recruitment and retention must be considered during the capstone planning process.  Within your MOU (Chapter 8) you will have outlined protocols and roles for stakeholders involved in your project. Developing a small-scale social marketing campaign will bring awareness of your project to the target community.  A small-scale social marketing campaign should take into account the services being provided, who will benefit from the services, and who needs to know about the services.  All necessary venues and stakeholders, such as partners, advisory boards, coalitions, community members, and participants should be considered.  Social marketing will create project awareness that will spark stakeholder interest and participation (Doll, 2010).

Commercial Marketing versus Social Marketing

In general, marketing is the process of getting potential clients or customers interested in your products or services.  While commercial marketing consists of efforts to promote and sell products profitably, social marketing has a non-profit motive and utilizes commercial marketing principles for non-profit purposes, such as informing and educating consumers and stakeholders about collective social issues (Nasrudin, 2022).  Although social and commercial marketing are both considered client-centered strategies that focus their research on a specific audience to understand behaviors, they can be distinguished in several ways.  (Refer to Table 9.1:  Commercial versus Social Marketing).

Table 9.1:  Commercial versus Social Marketing

Source:  Nasrudin, A. (2022, April 14). Commercial marketing: How it works, different from social marketing . Pension.  Retrieved September 30, 2022, from https://penpoin.com/commercial-marketing/

Social Marketing in Healthcare

Social marketing is the application of proven concepts and techniques drawn from the commercial sector to promote changes in diverse socially important behaviors, such as drug use and smoking.  Therefore, social marketing is widely used to influence health behavior.  Social marketers use a wide range of health communication strategies based on mass media.  Social marketers also use mediated, interpersonal, and other modes of communication; and marketing methods such as message placement, promotion, dissemination, and community-level outreach initiatives (Evans, 2006).  For students developing a capstone project with a target population, social marketing techniques can be used for program promotion and participant recruitment.

A Small-Scale Social Marketing Approach to Capstone Project Promotion and Participant Recruitment

Social marketing will help you reach your target audience.  This approach encourages you to thoroughly examine who you want to influence, and how to sway them most effectively.

Although this will depend on your project, it is helpful when you are trying to change the behavior of a group, population, or community.  Social marketing techniques can be used for program promotion, participant recruitment, and program sustainability.

Developing a Small-Scale Social Marketing Campaign

In the context of capstone projects, a social marketing campaign can be considered a philosophy that will direct how you approach your capstone project before and after implementation.  This does not mean that you must have a lot of money to make this work.  If you are excited about your capstone project and willing to put in the effort needed to make it work, social marketing can help you reach desired outcomes (Center for Community Health and Development at the University of Kansas, 2022).  (Refer to Table 9.2:  Managing a Small-Scale Social Marketing Campaign)

Table 9.2:  Strategies for Developing Your Small-Scale Social Marketing Campaign

Dissemination of project information, such as development of a small-scale marketing campaign, is an important consideration for effective program awareness, implementation, and sustainability.  Effective small-scale marketing campaigns should consider the services being provided, who will benefit from the services, and what stakeholders need to know about the services that are being offered.  Dissemination of information through social marketing can help to create community awareness regarding an important problem, issue, or need.  Small scale social marketing campaigns should be thoughtful and strategized processes because without stakeholder support, a program will not succeed or thrive.

Frequently asked questions about the Capstone Project

What is the Capstone project? The Capstone project is an opportunity to apply your new Green Digital Skills knowledge to making a change in the real world. You can choose one of the following and build an improvement plan to minimise the digital carbon footprint: – digital product (e.g. an existing website or app, digital device) – digital service (e.g. email, online shopping, social media, digital marketing) – digital process (e.g. virtual meetings, sharing files, data storage) – raising awareness of green digital skills

What is the Capstone rubric? The rubric is the project’s grading policy – it outlines the expectations of your Capstone project. To ensure your submission is acceptable, it must be a plan for change that meets the four criteria below:

  • Relevance : Project applies knowledge gained from the course.
  • Impact : Project contributes to creating a more sustainable internet, reducing the digital carbon footprint, AND/OR raising awareness of green digital skills.
  • Format : Project is presented using the Capstone template, a video, slide deck, or detailed article.
  • Authenticity : The project does not raise concerns of plagiarism or feasibility.

Is there a template I can use? Yes! There is a template in the course menu under ‘Capstone Resources’, just below Module 1.  Do I have to use the template? No. As it says in the rubric, you can submit your idea as a video, slide deck, or a detailed article you’ve written. Just ensure it includes the same information requested in the template. Do I need to work for a company to make a change? No! These Capstone projects are entirely personal to you, whether you work for a huge corporation, or you are currently studying, or you are self- or unemployed. The main aim is to apply knowledge gained from the course to the real world – no matter how small. 😊 Can I work with a partner? Almost everyone will complete the Capstone project by themselves. But! If you know someone else in your cohort, or you’ve met someone through the course, you could work together on a project – we would love that! Just inform your facilitator. Are there any examples of previous Capstone projects? You can find our very own example here , and some previous learners’ examples here . We also have a couple of examples on our website, here . Can you provide some links to external websites that can help? Yes! Here are some resources (related to each elective) that can support you bringing your idea to life. What is the ‘greenprint’? The Capstone project was formerly also known as a ‘greenprint’ – a combination of the words green + blueprint. In 2024, we simply refer to it as the Capstone. Do I need to implement the project before the end of the course? No, the Capstone is a plan for change. You can specify what you will do and when you will do it in the template. We would just recommend pursuing a project that you can implement within a few days, weeks, or months.

Must my projected be related to the elective I complete(d)? No, the project just has to meet the rubric above.

I’m really stuck! What should I do? If you are unable to attend the Weekly Workshops discussing the Capstone in more detail, you can check your Learner Homepage for resources from those sessions. You can also review the Capstone forum for ideas and message your facilitator via the forum or messenger. Otherwise, just focus on one digital solution you’ve learned from the course – a solution for reducing the digital carbon footprint. How will you implement this in your daily life and try to share this idea with those around you?

If you’re really stuck for ideas, try referring back to: Module 1 – Foundations of Sustainability in Tech: Lesson 4 of 6 (What can we do?) Module 2 – Green Digital Design Principles & Practices: Lesson 1 of 6 (Activity 2.1) Module 2 – Green Digital Design Principles & Practices: Lesson 2 of 6 (Why design should be responsible) Module 3 – Your Journey to Green & Greening Careers: Lesson 2 of 12 (How is your current profession impacting the environment?) Module 3 – Your Journey to Green & Greening Careers: Lesson 6 of 12 (How tech can make a difference)

Why is my idea not acceptable? We see many projects that aim to reduce the general carbon footprint. Although these are commendable, they do not reduce the DIGITAL carbon footprint. For example, ‘going paperless’ is simply digitalizing one’s processes, which actually adds to the digital carbon footprint. Sending an email with a 10 MB attachment to 20 people may in fact be more wasteful than printing that document 20 times. Green digital solutions are therefore those that reduce the environmental impact of digital products, services, or processes.

Claudio Carrasco

Indi artist claudio carrasco integrated marketing plan.

Claudio Carrasco

Claudio Carrasco is an independent Christian Hispanic Indie artist based in Issaquah, Washington who seeks to share Christian faith-based messages through his music. He does not have a marketing plan and needs to keep and extend his audience to create the sustainability of his call (business). We are presenting a plan that proposes a business goal, a marketing goal, and a brand awareness goal. This plan will help the artist to reach new audiences and become a sustainable business.

Joanne Hier

Jazz night school online classes marketing campaign.

Joanne Hier

For my capstone project, I helped a nonprofit music education organization called Jazz Night School to develop and promote a new online class offering. They had to make this switch to online in the wake of the COVID shutdowns. Doing online learning was a completely new ballpark for my client, and there were many challenges along the way including new competition and technical difficulties. We managed to develop and launch this program in the span of just two weeks, and this new class format is something that they plan on keeping even after the shutdown ends.

Nick Otniel Manzat

Breilee marketing plan.

Nick Otniel Manzat

In this Capstone Paper, the author, Nick Manzat tackles a marketing problem concerning his E-commerce client Breilee. The handmade children’s accessories client is facing an already well-established competition within the niche of the handcrafted products. Through primary and secondary research, he discovered that Breilee needs to increase awareness and drive consideration. The audience needed to know there is a better, more affordable, and high-quality alternative for children’s accessories. After the primary and secondary research phase, Nick proposed the client to work on brand guidelines, advertising, content marketing, and event marketing. Each initiative served as a complement to the bigger idea of raising awareness and driving consideration of the magical moments Breilee helps capture.

Vic Spurling

Integrated marketing plan for local redmond dog groomer & pet boutique .

Vic Spurling

For my Capstone project, I developed and executed an integrated marketing plan for a local Redmond dog groomer and pet boutique. Development of this plan included in-depth industry research, a complete competitive audit, the informed creating of customer personas and their journeys, and determining client goals to determine the best way forward. Execution was done through branding, developing a social media schedule as well as drafting social copy, creating a Google advertising campaign, optimizing web content, and developing a sales promotion to help bring in new recurring clients.

Emily Steitzer

Integrated marketing plan for dockside at duke’s.

Dockside at Duke’s is a newly opened event space in the South Lake Union region of Seattle, Washington, owned by parent company Duke’s Seafood. Entering the saturated venue market, Dockside at Duke’s has struggled to attract an audience despite promoting its venue through two trade shows and each of the well-established Duke’s Seafood seven restaurants. An integrated marketing plan focusing on branding and driving awareness of the new venue was created to address this problem.

Marijke Thomas

Strong family insurance integrated marketing plan.

Marijke Thomas

Strong Family Insurance based in Mount Vernon, Washington, is an independent agency licensed to market commercial and personal lines of insurance. They do not have a marketing plan and need to attract and write new business to show its ability to earn income and sustain growth. Innovative Marketing was selected to help them craft a plan to address this situation.

Research around challenges faced by Strong Family Insurance resulted in the creation of five objectives by Innovative Marketing: increasing sales, driving awareness that they are a high quality insurance company serving both consumers and commercial business, driving consideration that Strong Family Insurance serves a wide variety of industries, increasing perception that Strong Family Insurance honors relationships, and retaining 85% of the current customer base.

The objectives guided the creation of a promotional marketing strategy statement designed to activate consumers to take action and ideally convert in to becoming a customer: “You can count on Strong Family Insurance to honor their relationship with you and the larger Mount Vernon community. Choose Strong Family Insurance for high quality service in personal and business needs, regardless of industry.”

To implement this plan, Innovative Marketing proposed four initiatives and campaigns that supported the strategic framework: • Define brand guidelines • Improve the ecommerce experience • Implement a content marketing campaign • Implement an advertising campaign

ISAT celebrates 30 years of innovation and impact

The integrated science and technology program has been a beacon of excellence..

Email

SUMMARY: From its humble beginnings in the early ’90s, the program has become a powerhouse of interdisciplinary education, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges with creativity.

For three decades, JMU’s Integrated Science and Technology program has been a beacon of innovation and excellence.

Formed in 1993 and spearheaded by faculty with business and industry experience, the ISAT program aimed to bridge the gap between academia and the real world, transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries. “Virginia began pressing schools to develop new, innovative programs for the increasing number of students entering higher education,” explained Bob Kolvoord , dean of the College of Integrated Science and Engineering and an early ISAT faculty member.

Jeff Tang , associate dean of CISE and ISAT professor, says the program’s vision was to produce well-rounded graduates adept at tackling real-world challenges in science and technology. Under the leadership of then-President Ronald E. Carrier , ISAT flourished, leveraging the expertise of professionals from industry and government to enrich student learning experiences. “The ISAT program and the development of East Campus were endeavors close to Dr. Carrier’s heart,” Tang said.

ISAT’s curriculum diverged from the conventional specialist approach, emphasizing a broad-based education fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership and collaboration. This empowered students to tailor their course of study to align with their unique interests and offered more flexibility than traditional programs. “ISAT’s hands-on and collaborative approach to learning, coupled with the capstone project, has been integral to the program’s success from the outset,” Kolvoord said.

Jeremy Bost (’97)  recalls his senior thesis on digital mapping, a collaborative project with the National Park Service, as showcasing ISAT’s innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Combining business with science was a game-changer for Bost. “It was a technical solution for a communications and awareness problem,” he said. Bost’s career has centered on problem-solving, learning and training. He works at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he uses his knowledge, management skills, and experiences to create a positive and effective workplace.

Chris Butters (’17) appreciates the invaluable experience gained through his capstone project on integrating unmanned aircraft systems into emergency management. His experience in ISAT prepared him for his role as a response officer for the U.S. Coast Guard. Kolvoord says internships are not just encouraged in ISAT — they’re essential, offering students invaluable industry exposure and experiential learning.

Alicia Collins (’97), vice president of Supply Chain and External Manufacturing at Tune Therapeutics, credits her undergraduate internship at Merck for laying the foundation for her successful career in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. “ISAT is unique because of these opportunities,” she said. Research is the cornerstone of the ISAT experience. Students and faculty work closely, often collaborating with industry or government partners. “In ISAT, undergraduate research is a right, not a privilege,” said Stephanie Stockwell , co-director of the School of Integrated Sciences . “We believe that impactful and long-lasting educational experiences go beyond classroom learning.”

Kelly Davidhizar (’06) recounts her collaboration with an ISAT professor to develop a plague vaccine for the Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. “It was really cool to have a real-world project that mattered,” said Davidhizar, who now serves with the Defense Intelligence Agency in Germany.

Matt Keller (’97) praises ISAT’s interdisciplinary approach for fostering his entrepreneurial spirit. “ISAT trains you to do a little bit of everything, and that’s the perfect entrepreneurial person,” he said. Keller worked at Corsec Security, a small startup focusing on government security consulting, and took on various roles, including marketing, sales, consulting and liaising. He currently works at Nutanix, a cloud and virtualization company, leading teams working  toward meeting government requirements.

Reflecting on their ISAT experience, Bost and Keller fondly remember the camaraderie among students and faculty, underscoring the program’s collaborative spirit. ISAT’s impact has persisted over the years, shaping the trajectories of its alumni and enriching its legacy.

ISAT’s commitment to problem-solving, collaboration, and real-world application resonates with students and professionals, making it a hallmark of JMU’s academic landscape. As it celebrates 30 years of innovation, ISAT remains a shining example of how interdisciplinary education shapes the leaders of tomorrow.
