Why is teacher appreciation important?

Well, because we want to instil in our students a sense of gratitude. To know what to be grateful for in life is an invaluable skill to have. It’s also good to show how you feel about someone every once in a while. This makes both the student and the teacher feel good about themselves. And don’t we work hard enough for it, my friends?

What to write for Teachers Day

So, what to write for Teacher Appreciation Day? Well, something that shows appreciation of course! So you could ask students to just write a piece of text explaining why they appreciate their teachers, or one teacher in particular, so much. But don’t make it just a piece of text. Here are some teacher appreciation week writing ideas in fun formats:

Write a letter to the teacher you appreciate the most. Follow letter conventions and name reasons and examples to prove why this teacher is so great.
Write and record a speech to the teacher you appreciate the most. Use rhetoric devices (for students that know about them) and give reasons and examples for why you think this teacher is amazing.
Write a newspaper article about something great a wonderful teacher once did for you or someone else, which you really appreciated. Follow newspaper article conventions, make it sound like a newsworthy event, and really show what made this teacher so wonderful.
Write a review about your favorite teacher. Why should everyone be taught by this person? Follow review conventions and give reasons and examples for your rating.
Interview a classmate about their favorite teacher. Ask at least 10 questions to find out why this person is so great. Write out the interview as though it would appear in a magazine.

So what teacher appreciation prompts could you give to students to answer about their teachers?

What teacher is kindest?
What teacher explains things best?
What teacher would win a best dressed award?
What teacher has the funnest/most beautiful classroom?
What teacher has the tidiest classroom?
What teachers are friends, do you think?
Who is your favorite teacher ever?

You could make these into sets of discussion cards and get students to discuss the questions in small groups. Or you could ask them to the whole group and discuss that way. These also make good essay questions for students to answer.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Stories of Dedication and Creativity

Teachers have been working hard to stay connected with their students, and continue their instruction while schools are physically closed to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

In recognition of Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4-8), here are three of the many examples of teachers finding creative, fun, and generous ways to teach.

1. A Washington, D.C., science teacher turned his kitchen into a chemistry lab and is conjuring up some fizzy, smoky creations while his delighted students watch on Instagram or Facebook live. Jonte’ Lee, who teaches chemistry and physics at Calvin Coolidge High School, gave himself a crash course in social media so he could provide engaging chemistry-lab demonstrations for his students while they’re stuck at home.

Lee plastered his cabinets and dishwasher with posters that remind students of scientific principles they’ve learned, and he converted his chrome refrigerator into a dry-erase board.

One day recently, he stirred up some strawberry lemonade and dropped in some dry ice, instantly carbonating the beverage, to teach students about the three states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). Then he drank it. (Yes, he did!)

“My students are going, ‘Wow, you’re not supposed to drink that! Are you okay? Mr. Lee! Mr. Lee!’” he recalled with a chuckle in a phone interview.

On another day, Lee mixed sugar and baking soda and set it on fire, which creates a snaky carbon “monster” that keeps growing and growing. The lesson was designed to illustrate the way a chemical reaction can create an entirely new substance. “Wow, that’s super cool!” one student chimed in on the live feed.

2. A Connecticut theater teacher continues her lessons in shadow-puppeteering, but from her front porch. Jane Martineau, the director of the theater program at The Williams School in New London, decided to offer lessons three times a week to her students—and the whole neighborhood—after her campus closed. Her performances have included “The Wizard of Oz on the Front Porch,” and “Cinderella on the Front Porch.”

3. A high school math teacher in Georgia chalked congratulatory and encouraging messages on her students’ driveways.

Jennifer McLarty, a teacher at Walton High School, realized with a stab of sadness that she might not see her seniors again once schools were closed, because the district allowed students to finish the year with their grades through third quarter. Unwilling to let the year end without a goodbye, McLarty mapped a route to her students’ homes using addresses in her grade book, according to the Marrietta Daily Journal . It took her four hours to make the rounds, and she got help with the colorful chalkwork from her 5- and 8-year-old sons.

Gift cards and heartfelt notes are treasured gifts, many teachers say.

Teachers are known to use their own money to fund supplies for their students, classroom donations are always happily accepted during Teacher Appreciation Week, educators say.

Teachers often play an outsized role in the lives of the children they teach. They support, inspire, motivate and bring learning to life, and their paychecks rarely reflect just how much time and energy they put into their work. Teacher Appreciation Week is a chance for students, parents and administrators to show their thanks.

“Students and families celebrate teachers for the week of Teacher Appreciation by making cards, bringing treats and celebrating their educators in many other ways,” says Sara Murtaza, a virtual teaching instructor for K-5 students at the education company Carnegie Learning, who has taught in both public and private schools in California.

Here’s some background on the occasion and advice on how to celebrate.

When Is Teacher Appreciation Week?

Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated the first full week in May. This year it is May 7-12.

"Parents will give gifts, students will write letters and the administration will buy us a special lunch. Typically, our school's parent teacher organization also does something extra special," says Hannah Wilde, a high school teacher at a private school and education blogger in Ohio.

Teachers are not only shown appreciation inside school but outside, too. Local businesses often offer deals and discounts to teachers that week.

What Are Its Origins?

Teachers can credit former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt for laying the groundwork for what would ultimately become Teacher Appreciation Week. In 1953, Roosevelt urged Congress to create a day to recognize educators.

But it didn’t become a national day until March 7, 1980, after the joint lobbying efforts of the National Education Association and some state boards. In 1984, the National Parent Teacher Association designated the first full week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week.

How Do Schools and Parents Observe It?

Many schools hold a week of special events to honor their teaching staff. Teachers can usually expect special breakfasts or luncheons organized by administrators and parents.

"Each year Teacher Appreciation is hosted by the parent teacher association. They come up with some kind of a fun theme that is spread throughout five days," says Christine Weis, a longtime elementary school teacher in Wilmington, Delaware.

This year, she says, the week is themed around baseball, including a "tailgate party" lunch and a "7th Inning Stretch" with coffee, tea and treats.

Parents, through the PTA or PTO, are typically the ones organizing such events. "This year, they are bringing in a flower cart so we can all make our own bouquet to take home, they are buying us lunch from a local restaurant and they have a massage chair coming in for us to use during our planning period," says Wilde.

Josh DeSantis, associate professor of education at York College of Pennsylvania, says when he was an eighth grade social studies teacher for Susquenita School District in Pennsylvania, he used to receive notes of encouragement along with small treats in his teacher mailbox. But it was the special lunches that were most appreciated.

“Cheesy potato casserole, crockpot meatballs and brownies were a welcome respite from the chicken tenders and pizza from the cafeteria I ate most of the year,” says DeSantis.

He says there are many ways for parents to thank teachers during the week.

“One of the most impactful is through your school's PTO. I recommend reaching out to explore how you can be involved,” says DeSantis. “I also recommend nominating excellent teachers for local, state or national teacher awards.”

What to Give Your Child's Teacher

When it comes to individual gifts, teachers say a simple handmade card or note from your child telling them how much they made an impact will be greatly cherished.

"Teachers appreciate any thoughtful gift. The most appreciated gifts are handwritten cards. I have kept many over the years," says Weis.

DeSantis agrees and says many teachers “keep a rainy day file with notes like that to give them a lift when times get tough.”

Donna Whittaker, vice president of curriculum and education at early childhood provider Big Blue Marble Academy in Auburn, Alabama, says many schools and child-care centers have teachers fill out questionnaires about some of their favorite things so parents can provide gifts that will be appreciated and enjoyed by their child's teacher.

However, there are some gifts many teachers say they don’t like. Coffee mugs, tumblers, apples, lotion and generally any item that has a cheesy teacher pun on it are not the most sought-after, educators say.

"Although all gifts are appreciated, what not to gift teachers are candles, mugs, homemade treats and food and bath and body products," says Weis. Many teachers receive those year after year.

But parents and students aren’t the only ones sometimes getting it wrong. The teacher blog Teacher Misery documents real “ Worst Gifts from Administration ,” which include items like toenail clippers, a sheet of bubble wrap for “stress relief” and a snow globe with pictures of administrators’ faces floating around.

Gift cards are the real winner. Whittaker says since teachers often have limited space or funds, gift cards to shops and restaurants “make nice gifts as they are able to use the cards on what they truly want or need.” Gift cards to Target and Amazon are popular, as are Visa gifts cards.

And, since teachers are known to use their own money to fund supplies for their students, classroom donations are always happily accepted too during Teacher Appreciation Week, educators say.

“The best gifts come from the heart,” Murtaza says.

In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, recently named 2023 National Teacher of the Year Rebecka Peterson shares an open letter to educators across the U.S. with a message of resilience, gratitude and humanity.

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, 2023 National Teacher of the Year Rebecka Peterson from Oklahoma shares an open letter to her fellow educators.

Dear Teachers,

Teacher Appreciation Week is here, and I’m honored to thank each of you. It’s been a tough three years navigating post-pandemic learning. Our kids have changed, and so have we.

Still, there are some things that remain constant: our belief that every kid deserves access to a high-quality education, our commitment to our students’ well-being, and our deep-seated belief that education is the key out of generational poverty.

Over the years, you’ve taught me the importance of staying grounded in the reality of what is, while also looking towards the hope of what can be. You’ve reminded me that every day may not be good, but there’s something good in every day. And you’ve shown me the importance of tucking away those good things and carrying them in my heart.

As this year's National Teacher of the Year, I look forward to the opportunity to learn not only from the teachers across my state, but also from teachers across the country. I’ve traveled all over my state of Oklahoma, listening to teachers’ stories. My goal has been to create a space to elevate their voices and journeys. But true to teacher form, they taught me more this year than I could ever give back.

For instance, Courtney from Pauls Valley reminded me of the importance of celebrating student success with families. Every month, she and her colleagues write postcards to at least two families to share good news from school.

Pam from Warner inspired me to keep fostering a growth mindset. I’ll never forget Pam’s response when one of her fourth graders proudly marched up to the whiteboard and incorrectly solved a problem, which was “Thank you for making a mistake so we can all learn.”

And then there’s Loren from Okemah, a rural town where most students are on free or reduced lunch. Loren and her colleagues often buy snacks to ensure their students stay regulated throughout the day.

Teachers, the impact you hold is infinite. One sentence you whisper, one little seed you plant can change a child’s trajectory. And this year’s Google Doodle recognizing Teacher Appreciation Week honors that impact — how what we do helps our students grow.

Still, I know we hold so much. I know this time of year comes with never-ending to-do lists.

We all enter this time of year with a wide array of emotions: Some of us feel excited; others feel exhausted. Some of us are sending our kids off to their next great adventure; others are worrying about what summer means for their meals, routines and learning.

Most of us probably feel all these things. That’s OK. In fact, it’s good. Because it’s human.

So whatever you’re feeling, lean into it. Don’t shy away from them. That’s how you’ll be able to spot what your kids are feeling and be able to do what you do best: support them in the present moment.

I am so proud to belong to this profession — to belong to you.

Event Description

Since 1984, the National PTA has designated time each May for communities nationwide to honor teachers for their work with children. Parents, students, and schools across America celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week to show appreciation for the work and dedication of teachers and reaffirm the commitment to parent-teacher partnerships.

Classroom Activity

In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, read a book about a teacher such as Thank You, Mr. Falker, Miss Nelson is Missing , or a Magic School Bus story with Ms. Frizzle. Why are the teachers in these stories special? Have a class discussion about some of your students' favorite teachers. Then have students try these follow-up activities:

Compare a favorite teacher to a teacher from a book with the Interactive Venn Diagram .
Write a letter to a favorite teacher using the Letter Generator .
Create a character map of either Miss Nelson or another storybook teacher with the Story Mapping tool.
Use the Essay Map to plan and write an essay on why they would or would not like to be a student in one of the storybook teachers' classrooms.
Read and present another book about a special teacher. Older students may choose books like The Miracle Worker by William Gibson, Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, or A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines.

In America today, more than half of teachers say they’re dissatisfied with their pay.

Faced with decades of stagnant wages , one in five works a second job to make ends meet, while many preschool teachers make so little that they qualify for public assistance . Teacher strikes have dominated education-news headlines in the past two years, and a recent poll found more than half of Americans say they don’t want their children to grow to be teachers.

Yet that same poll found two-thirds of Americans agree that teachers are underpaid and nearly three-quarters would support their local teachers in a walkout. And, of course, this is the time of year when parents take to Pinterest and Google seeking creative, meaningful ways to show their appreciation to their children’s teachers.

But do today’s teachers really feel appreciated?

“I'm reminded constantly by friends, family, and people who I casually meet that teachers have had enormous influence on their lives,” says Jeremy Robinson (Chicago ’04), a 13-year classroom veteran who teaches high school English. “I think when I feel that I'm not as appreciated, it's typically from the noise of what I'm hearing on TV or reading in newspapers or coming across on social media.”

It’s a dual reality many teachers know well.

“When I'm inside my classroom, I don't really worry about all those things because I'm with my kids, that's all I need to think about,” Shannon Montague (Baltimore ’16), a third-year high school special education English teacher, says. “But then if I have a break in the day and we're going to meetings and we're talking about the fact that we need to reallocate resources so that kids can get what they need, there is this whole stress.”

The implications of that stress are far reaching, impacting the morale and wellbeing of the thousands of teachers working tirelessly for their students--and ultimately affecting the students themselves. In addition to second jobs and side hustles, teachers speak of pulling back on self-care, reducing monthly student loan payments, and other accommodations to the realities of life as a teacher.

“Students, especially students from disadvantaged backgrounds, need someone who's ready prepared, full of energy, and is able to take them through a learning journey like no other,” says Miguel Cervantes del Toro (Baltimore ’09), an elementary school principal. “It's hard to get there being stretched out thin and not having the resources to be able to give 110 percent each and every day.”

Feeling Students’ Appreciation

Teachers, of course, are quick to point out they did not enter the profession for the money. There’s at least one big reason they remain in the classroom, no matter the challenges: their students.

“I have so much love in my heart for them and I know they have so much love in my heart for me,” Shannon says. “We have so much fun every single day. They're just great.”

And despite everything, for teachers deeply committed to their students, there’s no question where they want to be.

“The kids keep me going,” says Koneisha Robinson (Baltimore ’17), a second-year corps member who teaches seventh-grade math and literacy. “My purpose is to try to help my kids and be there for them and be their champion. I just couldn't see myself doing anything other.”

Students know intuitively when a teacher is on their side, and often show their appreciation for their teachers in surprising ways. For Shannon, it comes out when she returns from being absent for a day or two.

“They are like, ‘Where were you? Why didn't you show up? Why didn't you tell us you were going to be gone?’” she says. “These are high schoolers, so I'm like, ‘Who knew they'd care if their teacher missed a day?’ But it's just sweet to know when I'm gone they miss me.”

Janneth Pareles (Connecticut ’17), a middle school history teacher in Bridgeport, Connecticut, loves the occasional Starbucks card her students will bring her and laughs as she relates one example of her students showing how much they appreciate her. Whenever her Teach For America coach would come to observe her in the classroom, her students took note.

“They would actually behave better. They would actually step up their game,” Janneth says. “They would tell me, ‘We did this for you, Miss.’”

And sometimes that sense of appreciation is more explicit and life-changing. Jeremy tells the story of a girl who recently came to his classroom to thank him for a letter of recommendation that helped her get accepted to Georgetown University.

“To me, that was tremendously validating because this is a girl who will be one of the first in her family to have a shot at graduating from college. And not just any college, one of the most elite institutions in the world,” Jeremy says. “To me, that tangible impact on her life flooded me with appreciation and the feeling that the work that I do actually can make a difference in the world.”

A Culture of Teacher Appreciation

At Callaway Elementary School in Baltimore, where Miguel is principal, he works to make sure teachers feel appreciated in ways big and small. He’s brought in a cook to make omelets for teachers and encouraged students to bring teachers their favorite fruits. He’s created a “wall of shoutouts” where students post sticky notes thanking their teachers and expressing their appreciation. And he’s recognized teachers publicly at assemblies and through a Teacher of the Month award for their hard work and contributions to the school community.

“Those are small ways in which we, the community and myself, go out of our way to make sure teachers know that they're appreciated for what they do, and for the impact that they're making,” Miguel says.

But Miguel also works to ensure that teachers are valued in ways that go beyond expressions of gratitude, meaningful as those are. More than anything, that means seeking out teachers’ opinions and giving them a seat at the table when it comes to decision making and budgeting.

“Being able to have the teachers at the table allows them to voice their concerns, allows them to be able to have a say in what goes on at the school,” Miguel says. “Giving them that voice and participation, allows for all the decisions to be grounded in teacher needs and student needs.”

“I think the best way to improve the quality of our very polarizing conversation about education is to encourage people to go into schools and start observing.”

The Teacher Appreciation Deficit

One result of this collaboration is that Miguel’s school provides basic supplies, and teachers don’t need to spend their own money on classroom essentials. That is not the case at all schools, and in many places, feeds teachers’ feelings of being underappreciated. Shannon, for instance, says she spends her own money on “pretty much everything in my classroom that's not a desk or a chair,” adding “I love my kids so much, but that can only take me so far.”

Jeremy remembers the days, early in his career, when he, too, spent thousands of dollars out of pocket, and even bought his own laser printer in order to sidestep a 500-copy monthly limit on teacher use of his school’s copy machine. Now, he says, he’s figured out how to design lessons with less out-of-pocket cost, but also knows he is fortunate to work at a school that provides the supplies he needs.

To him, the amount we as a society spend on education is a statement of values, and of what we value, and he says, “we don't value educators in a way that aligns with the values our country has.” He envisions a day when a teachers are paid--and respected--to the extent that the profession can truly compete with other high-profile and highly paid career choices.

“I don't think we're at a place yet as a country where students in college aspire to be teachers at the same level of intensity that they aspire to be doctors, businessmen, lawyers,” Jeremy says. “We could really benefit from trying to craft a narrative that would convince young people to look at teaching as not just a noble craft but one that captures their hearts and imagination and that fires them up in the same way that those other professions do.”

It’s not only money that would help teachers feel more valued. Teachers describe any number of things that would help them improve their craft, be happier at work, and ultimately, benefit their students: Strong and supportive school leadership, a school community dedicated to excellence, a sense of autonomy in the classroom, and greater professional development and career-growth opportunities.

“Just acknowledging that it's a lot, and maybe thinking about that in the strategic processes that they work through would be helpful,” Shannon says.

That sentiment is pervasive: Teachers want to be seen. They long for the day when the public and our political leaders to understand, acknowledge, and appreciate the effort, commitment, hard work, long hours, tenacity, creativity, and sacrifice it takes to succeed in the classroom.

“‘If you can't do, teach, right?” Shannon says in summing up common sentiment on teaching. “The number of times that I've heard people say, ‘Oh teaching is so easy. I could do it if I want to.’ But they don't teach, and they don't necessarily know a lot of teachers that are on the ground every single day.”

Koneisha, is, like many teachers, at school before 6 a.m. and still there beyond 5 p.m. She’s written grant applications for the drama club, and took students on trips to shows, even arranging a discussion with the directors. And she spends countless hours sweating the details of every lesson plan.

“I think about all the differentiation that goes into my lesson, like how I'm trying to attend to all of the learners in the room,” Koneisha says. “That requires more than just an hour, more than just two hours. It requires time, and I don't think people think that it happens like that. I think that we are a little bit underappreciated in that sense.”

It’s never easy or quick to change public perception, and there is likely no single solution. Jeremy urges those who comment on and feel invested in our school system to at least get into to the classroom and experience the place “where the magic happens.”

“I think the best way to improve the quality of our very polarizing conversation about education is to encourage people to go into schools and start observing,” Jeremy says. “You'll quickly fall in love with teachers and students all over again. You’ll more fully appreciate what they’re trying to accomplish and what obstacles they must overcome. You'll begin to think more deeply about how you can support our nation’s educators rather than attack them without solutions.”

When Is Teacher Appreciation Week?

U.s. teacher appreciation week runs from may 6 to may 10, 2024, and teacher appreciation day is may 7, 2024..

Since 1984, Teacher Appreciation Week always takes place the first full week of May. Teacher Appreciation Day, on the other hand, takes place on the first Tuesday in May in the United States. (World Teachers Day takes place each year in October— here’s more about that holiday .)

Eleanor Roosevelt was actually the first to convince Congress that we needed a dedicated time to thank teachers for their hard work in the 1950s. The first lady had an excellent understanding of what it really means to be a teacher.

“The teachers are, of course, among the most important people in our nation,” she wrote in 1953 . “Day in and day out they are at work preparing the future citizens of the U.S. … I have always felt that we did not give an honorable enough place in our communities to the teachers. Next to parents they are the most important people in our communities.”

Roosevelt continued: “It is quite impossible to give teachers monetary compensation alone that will repay for their devotion to the job and the love that must go to each and every child. But I think we could compensate a little more adequately the teachers in our communities if we were conscious of their importance.”

The 81st Congress declared a National Teacher Day for 1953 at Roosevelt’s urging. The holiday didn’t catch on right away, though. In 1980, Congress declared March 7 National Teacher Day, but it was only for that year. It wasn’t until 1985 that the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week in the first full week of May, with Teacher Appreciation Day held on Tuesday of that week.

What do teachers really want for Teacher Appreciation Week?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: What teachers really want is to be valued, paid fairly, and supported in their jobs. They want a safe teaching environment and reasonable class sizes, with quality resources to serve every student’s needs. Teachers want equipment that works; texts that are up-to-date, relevant, and diverse; and plentiful classroom supplies that they don’t have to pay for out of their own pockets.

Most of all, teachers want respect. They want to be recognized for the professional, hardworking, dedicated, responsible, and educated workers they are. Teachers want the trust and freedom to make decisions about what they teach and how they teach it, because they are trained experts in their fields. They want administrators who support their decisions and provide the professional development they need to stay on top of their game.

Many of these are things that come automatically in other professions. But for some reason, teachers constantly have to beg for supplies, better pay, support, respect, and recognition. The best way you can really help teachers is to use Teacher Appreciation Week to advocate for what they really want and need, in and out of the classroom.

Use Teacher Appreciation Week to advocate for fair compensation, smaller class sizes, quality educational resources, and the respect and trust educators have earned.

20 U.S. Teacher Appreciation Week Ideas for 2024

That being said, teachers also want to be recognized for all their hard work, and this week is the perfect time to do it! By the end of a long school year, teachers have given their all every single day. So take this week to show them some love. These teacher appreciation ideas are a great way to start.

1. Collect thank-you notes

Meaningful teacher thank-you notes are always appreciated, as these examples can attest . Send a request home to students and families requesting they fill out a form or write a letter to help show appreciation for their teacher. Supply prompts or questions to make things a little easier, such as:

Why do you like your teacher?
What’s something cool your teacher taught you this year?
What makes your teacher special?
Share a special story about your teacher.

Don’t forget to give a deadline for returning the letters, and make it easy for families to respond any way that works best (collection box in the office, email, snail mail, etc.).

2. Record thank-you videos

Set up a Flip page for your school (or one for each teacher) and invite students and families to record a quick thank-you video. This way, others can see and celebrate your educators too.

3. Cover daily duties

Ask parents, administrators, and school board members to volunteer their time to cover recess or lunch duty, so teachers can get a much-needed break. Parent volunteers can also handle tasks like making copies, assembling supplies for a project, or organizing classroom bookshelves.

4. Pass out coupons for the future

Give teachers some flexibility by providing them with coupons they can trade for help in the future. (Be sure you’re not tasking other teachers with covering for them, though. Instead, arrange for administrators or parents to step in as needed.) Some possible ideas:

Cover a duty (lunch, drop-off/pickup, etc.)
Early leave/late arrival
Lend a hand (Be a second pair of hands and eyes in the classroom.)

5. Create collaborative art

6. Decorate their doors

Loudly and proudly celebrate your teachers by decorating their doors. This costs very little. You just need some time and parent volunteers to pull it off. One principal turns his teachers into superheroes, complete with large face cutouts and capes!

7. Write messages in sidewalk chalk

This is a fun and easy way to welcome teachers to their day. Invite families to create the art the night before (check the weather for rain) or to come in early before school.

8. Let baristas make your teachers coffee

Set up your own hallway Starbucks, making delicious caffeine-filled treats for your teachers. This one will take some help from amazing volunteers, but if you pull it off, teachers will be talking about it for a long time.

9. Create collaborative bouquets

One principal asked each student to bring in a single flower, then created bouquets. This is a really sweet and inexpensive way to let families contribute, especially in areas where everyone has their own backyard garden.

10. Wash teachers’ cars

We heard from one principal who said they coordinate with their coaches and athletic department to set up a car-washing station during Teacher Appreciation Week. It’s free for all teachers, and it gets students involved too. So creative!

11. Buy them lunch

This is a standard Teacher Appreciation event, but one that’s always appreciated. Let teachers vote to choose a place, and place their orders in advance so every teacher gets what they want. (If possible, offer several places that teachers can pick from when they order.) Then, make sure their lunchtime is actually long enough (and stress-free enough!) to enjoy their meal.

12. Host a cookout

Invite parent or community volunteers to throw a cookout during lunch. Set up tables and chairs outside, with food available all through teacher lunch hours. They can swing by when their lunch break arrives, grab some BBQ, and relax with their coworkers in the sun!

13. Bring in a food truck or ice cream truck

This one will be oh-so popular, but it might take a little more cash. Cut costs by asking food trucks to donate or give you a discount. (You never know.) If that’s not possible, have an open call for donations from school families or select members of the community.

14. Offer room service

Put a note on teachers’ doors offering them room service. List treats like coffee, water, chocolate, fruit, etc. Ask them to select one or two items and then hang their request on their door by a certain time. Collect the notes, then stop by and leave the teachers’ requested items before the end of the day. This gives administrators a chance to get face time with each and every educator too!

15. Rent an ice cream machine for the week

You can give your teachers ice cream all Teacher Appreciation Week long through the magic of a rental. Set it up so your teachers can have ice cream anytime they want. (You can also rent a popcorn machine, snow cone machine, etc.) So sweet!

16. Offer massages with a mini spa

Want to help teachers relax? A massage might be the ticket! If you’re on a budget, ask the local massage schools if they have students who’d be willing to volunteer. You can also send an email to parents asking if anyone is a massage therapist. Have a sign-up sheet for teachers to get massages, then set everything up in an empty classroom that has soft music, aromatherapy, and other treats.

17. Ask local businesses to offer freebies or discounts

Visit local stores and restaurants to see if they’d be willing to give your teachers a discount or free item during Teacher Appreciation Week. They can provide items to give teachers at school, or invite teachers to stop by in person to get their discount or freebie.

18. Roll out the red carpet

Ask a local company if they’ll donate a red carpet rental, or just make one yourself out of paper. Then, give each teacher a star on the walk of fame, and line the carpet with students and administrators to cheer them on!

Teachers, despite working about 53 hours per week on average, get very little credit for all their hard work. Whether you have a child in elementary school or middle school, or you’re in high school wanting to share your appreciation for a great teacher or role model at school, a thank you note is the best way to share how much you appreciate the special teacher in your life. By writing a heartfelt thank you card to your wonderful teacher you can let them know all their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. When you’re ready to start writing your thank you, make sure to find appropriate personal stationary . Simple cards that say “Thank you” or school themed stationary are perfect for your handwritten note. Or, you can type out a thank you card customized with a favorite photo of you and your fantastic teacher. Once you have your card, start with the steps listed below:

Address the teacher by their proper name. Make sure you’re certain whether the teacher prefers to go by “Mr.” “Mrs.” “Miss” or “Ms.” Use this title on both the envelope and inside the card.
Start off with a greeting. Some appropriate greeting might include “Dear,” “To,” or just the teacher’s name followed by a comma.
Describe what they did that you are thankful for, and how it helped you. Maybe it was simply spending extra time after class to help your child work through a math problem. Or maybe it was something much bigger, like helping you through a difficult time of your life or providing extra support throughout the school year. Whatever it was, tell them why it mattered to you.

Let’s Hear it for the Coach: Appreciating Your Child’s Coach or Sports Mentor with a Note

Dear Coach Jackson,

We want to express our thanks for making our son, Tim Findley, feel a part of the volleyball team this year. If you recall, Tim transferred into the district in late October just after you had officially ended try-outs. You agreed to make an exception and let him try-out for the team the following week, and fortunately, you selected him for the starting line-up. That exception, in itself, could have created jealousies among other students.

We, as well as Tim, feared that might be the case. But as the season began, you planned some very important team-building, “bonding” experiences for the boys as you traveled to various tournaments to scout the opposition. Those trips especially gave the team members a chance to get to know Tim quickly one on one off the court. Those opportunities made the transition much easier for him in the new school.

And by the way, I might add that his grades have reflected a comfortable adjustment as well.

As you may have guessed, changing schools in the middle of the year is never a good situation for any student, but for an athlete, it can be disastrous. Such was not the case for Tim this year, thanks to you . We do appreciate your constant encouragement, your competent coaching, and your efforts to see that the college scouts take a look at your athletes. What more could parents ask?
