Social media and books usually don’t mesh well. Sometimes, we find ourselves falling down the social media rabbit hole instead of doing what we love more, which is reading books . But what if it proves to be difficult taking time away from social media, especially the irresistible lure of Bookstagram? After all, it has become part of our daily lives, and to some, everyday work.

We can reduce the digital noise by populating our feeds with awesome bookish content. Below are the best book accounts on Instagram to follow for feed curation , self-care, inspiration, ideas, recommendations, and beyond! The list consists of the best Bookstagrammers, authors, literary agencies, cover designers, poets, websites, book clubs, organizations, and the like.

James Trevino (@james_trevino)

Trevino is a Bookstagrammer from Romania, and he has one of the best Bookstagram accounts on the platform. He posts artful arrangements of books whose themes are sometimes based on books themselves. Usually, they are laid out exquisitely on the floor.

Trevino has attracted media attention from the likes of Business Insider , Bored Panda, and the blog of the gay social network Hornet.

Elizabeth Sagan (@elizabeth_sagan)

If you’re looking for a female counterpart to Trevino, there’s his friend Elizabeth Sagan. Sagan also posts curated displays of books, and her feed is very similar to Trevino’s in terms of aesthetics. Most of her photos have fantasy themes.

Sagan’s and Trevino’s massive followings have spurred the creation of the handle @mybookfeatures , which features bookish content from variety of bookworms.

Firkins is a young adult author ( How Not to Fall in Love ) and a costume designer. However, she is not just another designer as she creates dresses based on book covers. In fact, she made this beautiful dress inspired by the cover of Pride and Premeditation by YA author and Book Riot contributing editor Tirzah Price.

The Last Bookstore (@lastbooktorela)

The Last Bookstore is an independent bookstore in downtown Los Angeles. Goodreads (@goodreads)

I usually stay away from the Goodreads website because, um, you know …but for some reason, I love their Instagram feed. It’s so vibrant and colorful. If you’re a Bookstagrammer, they feature contributions with the hashtag #GoodreadsSpotlight and with #GoodreadsWithAView for books and scenic spots.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Goodreads (@goodreads)

Pretty Book Places (@prettybookplaces)

Speaking of scenic spots, this Instagram account features “aesthetic collection of #PrettyBookPlaces.” They usually post photos of bookshelves and bookstores from different places around the world. If you love books and travel, follow them for this kind of content.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Books | Places | Interior (@prettybookplaces)

Kirkus Reviews (@kirkus_reviews)

This book review site is also killing it on Instagram. Kirkus Reviews posts usually include a snippet of a book review, which is also published on their website, and an Instagram-worthy shot. Excellent writing and aesthetically pleasing photos make a good combination indeed.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kirkus Reviews (@kirkus_reviews)

American Booksellers Association (@americanbooksellers)

The Instagram feed of this not-for-profit trade organization highlights beautiful bookshelves of independent bookstores across the U.S. In each photo, they also include a little bit of history of those bookstores. Library Journal is a book site for librarians. Their Instagram profile is vibrant. They post occasional bookish news and updates that are relevant to librarians. If you’re looking for more book accounts on Instagram that cater to them, here’s a few .

If you’re not a librarian yourself, however, you can still follow them for their author events.

The best Instagram accounts for book lovers

Love looking at pictures of books as much as you love reading? Then make sure to follow these Instagram accounts.

An image of the Instagram logo made up of book spines.

For book lovers, there’s no more beautiful sight than a perfectly arranged bookshelf, a cosy reading nook or a stack of books arranged by theme or colour.

And so, Instagram is the perfect social media network for readers. Not only is it a place where you can find aesthetically pleasing pictures of books, it’s also somewhere that give you recommendations for your next read, based on just about any criteria you want.

Here are our favourite Instagram accounts for fans of reading.

1.  @elizabeth_sagan

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Elizabeth Sagan (@elizabeth_sagan)

Bookstagrammer Elizabeth Sagan creates stunning “paintings” using books. She’s often in the images herself, whether she’s flying on a broomstick through an archway, giving herself wings made of books with black jackets, or talking about Greek mythology with Medusa-like book hair.

2.  @hooplaback.girl

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Anuradha Bhaumick (she/her) (@hooplaback.girl)

Anuradha Bhaumick runs what is probably the cutest Bookstagram account ever, posting pictures of her cross stitch scenes, which are mostly of people reading and sharing their passion for books. Her cross stitches are full of detail you’ll want to zoom in to see, and the bright colours will add a much-needed dose of brightness to your Instagram feed.

3.  @coraliebickfordsmith

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Coralie Bickford-Smith (@coraliebickfordsmith)

If you love the classics, then take a look at designer Coralie Bickford Smith ’s account. Bickford Smith, who as well as being the author of books including The Song of the Tree , is the designer for the Penguin Clothbound Classics , shares pictures of the books she’s worked on as well as giving an insight into some of the creative techniques she’s using.

4.  @thesianpages

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Sîan Pages 🌈🌻📚 (@thesianpages)

Bookworm Sîan’s account is only a year old, but we’re already big fans. Sîan is a big champion of authors of colour, and of Black writers in particular, and this Bookstagram account is full of joy.

5.  @wordchild

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Books 📸 Triin (@wordchild)

If you’re after inspiration for creating your own book nook , look no further than wordchild, whose account shows off their absolutely stunning reading spaces. Wooden floors, stacks of books, comfy reading chairs, and a mix of old and new bookcases – excuse us while we go swoon.

6.  @lovelyowlsbooks

View this post on Instagram A post shared by #BookBlogger / 25 / UK (@lovelyowlsbooks)

Book blogger Zulfa’s account is the definition of “aesthetically pleasing”. The set-ups for all her photographs involve lots of props, all perfectly placed and tying in with the books featured. There’s a definite tilt towards fantasy, science fiction and young adult novels, so if those are your jam, then click that follow button.

7.  @lastnightsreading

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kate Gavino (@bykategavino)

Are you the type of person who loves an inspirational literary quote? Then Kate Gavino has you covered with illustrations of quotes, and their authors. The account began as quotes from readings authors held in New York and Paris, but has since expanded to include a variety of authors, with Gavino using writers’ birthdays to celebrate their work.

8.  @booksontheunderground

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Books On The Underground (@booksontheunderground)

We might not be commuting at the moment, but Books on the Underground can help us remember the good old days of squeezing onto packed trains, trying to regulate our body temperature when going from the chilly outside air to a station, and, of course, finding or leaving books on the Underground. The account is sharing its current reads at the moment, but scroll back through to see previous titles left on the Tube network, and start getting excited about one day discovering a book left on a train again.

9.  @ice_cream_books

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ice Cream Books (@ice_cream_books)

Do love books? Do you love ice cream? Then say hello to Ice Cream Books, which does what it says and pairs books and ice creams in photographs that look like pieces of art. Images include a copy of Jeff Koons: A Retrospective with a bouquet of Jolly Rancher popsicles, and  Bricks and Mortar: Offline Shopping in Online America by Frank Cost pictured among a wall of  vanilla and chocolate wafer ice cream sandwiches.

10.  @bookbento

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Book Bento Box (@bookbento)

Book Bento describes itself as “book recommendations with a side of stuff”. It may sound a little strange, but once you see the photographs on this account you’ll understand. Each book featured is pictured with items that are relevant to the characters or mentioned in the text. Think Erin Morgenstern ’s The Starless Sea with a bottle of champagne and a watch.

11.  @oprahsbookclub

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Oprah’s Book Club (@oprahsbookclub)

The official account for Oprah’s Book Club doesn’t just feature the group’s chosen reads. And, of course, occasionally you’ll get recommendations straight from Queen Oprah herself.

14.  @reesesbookclub

18.  @cals_book_account

View this post on Instagram A post shared by cal :-) 📚📚 (@cals_book_account)

Much as we love a glossy photo or 10, the main reason we follow Bookstagram accounts is for the real book recommendations from real people. And one of our favourites is Cal’s Book Account. Run by a teenager with a serious book habit , we love that Cal reads widely and isn’t afraid to show a passion for reading.

19.  @penguinukbooks

22 Bookstagrammers On Instagram To Follow If You Love Reading

Connect with the book community through Instagram by following these 22 incredible readers!

Farrah Penn

BuzzFeed Staff Writer

1. Brynn from @readyourworriesaway

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: My name is Brynn and I am a sixth-grade teacher with a passion for reading. I especially love reading outdoors when the weather is nice here in Wisconsin! I started this bookstagram account as a fun little hobby, and I never could have imagined making such great connections with others who love to read books too!

What Followers Can Expect: You can expect a lot of mystery/thriller books + reviews on my bookstagram — it’s my fave genre. I also love reading memoir, romance, true crime, literary fiction, and contemporary fiction! I also do some fun giveaways and weekly “ This or That ” polls in my stories!

A Recent Book I Loved: A recent favorite of mine is The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose. It’s a must-read for all thriller lovers! It was twisty, full of suspense, and kept me guessing. I was constantly reevaluating the evidence and trying to figure out all of the details, but I was left surprised over and over again. I loved the powerful female lead, and the alternating perspectives between Sarah and Adam. As I got closer to the end, my heart was racing and I couldn’t read the words on the page fast enough. I needed answers!

2. Taryn from @mentallybooked

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: I'm a 23-year-old bookworm currently living in Atlanta with my childhood dog, Baxter. I majored in environmental science in college, but books are a hobby-turned-passion for me and I'd love to work in the publishing industry someday. Aside from reading, I also really love horror movies , ice cream , and fantasizing about my dream NYC brownstone.

What Followers Can Expect: I read and feature a wide range of new and backlist titles on my page, from contemporary and literary fiction to speculative, magical realism. I hope everyone who follows my page knows to expect honest reviews and bright, colorful photos.

A Recent Book I Loved: At the end of last year, I read Crosshairs by Catherine Hernandez, which is a dystopian novel set in Canada that inspects issues of climate disaster, social justice, and cultural identity. In fact, it's now one of my favorite books of all time. Another, slightly more recent, favorite is Bestiary by K-Ming Chang. I read this one in January and it's the perfect book for people who like weird but lyrical magical realism.

3. Taylor from @bookswithtay

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: My name is Taylor, and I’m a Texan native now living in New York City . I grew up reading, but didn’t read a single book for leisure in college. I found myself having a lot of time to read on my commute on the subway, so I was able to pick up the habit again.

What Followers Can Expect: They can expect reviews across all genres and a diverse array of authors! I make it a point to prioritize and amplify BIPOC authors, and all of my reviews are 100% genuine and honest. I take all the photos myself (usually in my apartment) and occasionally in the city — with a guest appearance from my cat, George.

A Recent Book I Loved: I recently read N.K. Jemisin’s The City We Became , which was a really great speculative fiction novel. I highly recommend it, even if you’re not a fantasy novel reader. The City We Became is unlike any other fantasy novel I’ve read. She thrusts you straight into the world with little explanation, and you figure it out as the story progresses. (Although there is little world-building in this one — the setting is in present-day NYC.) ⁣Jemisin says she wrote this book as a love letter to New York City, and I wholeheartedly agree with that. This city is both gritty, resilient, and beautiful, and she captured that very well. ⁣

4. Emma from @bookedwithemma

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: My name is Emma Ito and I’m a bisexual half-Japanese public historian in an academic/archival library. I specifically focus on Virginia and Southern history, and Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) history in the South. I strongly believe honest history is so important, and reading is one key avenue toward learning history that wasn’t taught in the classroom.

What Followers Can Expect: Followers can expect to see a mix of critical reviews, beautiful bookshelves, and many nonfiction recommendations. I prioritize reading BIPOC/Disabled/2SLGBTQ+ authored books.

A Recent Book I Loved: AHH, this is so hard! I am currently reading The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr. and find myself absolutely swept away by the beautiful prose in this. (I highly recommend checking out the incredible reviews for this book from @ thatgoodgoodbook, @ ablackmanreading , and @ _litmedown , who all influenced me to pick this up.) I also always recommend Displacement by Kiku Hughes!

5. Joy from @smileitsjoy

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: My name is Joy Melody and I am currently a doctoral student focusing on health communication — specially how Black women communicate about their reproductive health. I am a native of Fort Worth, Texas. I am an advocate for Black mxn and womxn, especially graduate students, who also may have learning disabilities and mental health disorders, like myself.

What Followers Can Expect: Followers can expect Black books and the books of other authors of color to be prioritized. I give honest and hilarious reviews. I also share a little bit of my non-reading life — student life, dog mom, young and married, and health journey.

A Recent Book I Loved: This is tough! A recent book I enjoyed is one I JUST finished: Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson. It drops in the States in the coming months, but it just took my breath away. It’s a must-read!

6. Whit from @bookqueen_whit

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: My name is Whitney and I am a self-proclaimed “Aficionado of the Finest Books.” I currently reside in Dallas, with big dreams of owning a bookstore one day.

What Followers Can Expect: Followers can expect a wide range of genres and fun book pictures to go along with whatever I’m reading or obsessing over at the moment. I’ll go from showcasing Black authors and social justice issues to jumping into a scary, disturbing psychological thriller that will keep you up at night. I can then wake up the next day and pop a romance on my feed. I take pride in posting a wide variety of options for the average reader.

A Recent Book I Loved: I actually have two books I recently read that I truly enjoyed! The first was We Were Eight Years in Power by Ta-Nehisi Coates. It touched on each year of President Barack Obama ’s administration. It was a brutally honest work of art. I loved everything about it. The next book I read was a psychological thriller titled Confessions on the 7:45 by Lisa Unger. This book totally made me forget about everything that was going on around me. I fell deep into this story and I applaud the author for allowing us to experience just a glimpse of her creative mind.

7. Sarah from @tipsybookreviews

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: Hi, I’m Sarah! I’m a bookworm in my mid-twenties and when I’m not reading, you can find me watching true crime shows and drinking wine.

What Followers Can Expect: I post lots of book reviews paired with drink recommendations that I think would be perfect to sip on while reading! I also cohost the #BottomsUpBuddyRead with my friend, Alison (@ talkbookstome_ ), which has been a great way to connect with other book lovers!

A Recent Book I Loved: I recently read Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano and I absolutely loved it! That book was quirky, entertaining, and such a page turner! I loved the wild ride that this one was...just as Finlay got herself into more and more tricky situations, I couldn’t help but root for her! Sometimes I’d be internally screaming at Finlay for some of the choices she made, but there were also tons of laugh out loud moments! Cosimano totally nailed the setting with this one too! As a Northern VA native myself, I was fangirling over the locations mentioned in the book.

8. Marissa from @allegedlymari

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: I am in my last semester of law school and preparing to take the bar exam in July. I started my account a little over two years ago and have loved all of the connections and friends I have made.

What Followers Can Expect: I post a lot of personal experiences. I like to discuss how a book triggered a memory or my interpretation of a story. I don't do star reviews on my page. Every book is different for every person, and it feels weird to say I didn't like a book and possibly dissuade someone from reading it. I do highlight the books I love and speak as to how I connected with them, but I won't do a traditional review. Also, I have been involved with advocacy for human rights for several years and that bleeds into everything I do. And of course, dog and beer content!

A Recent Book I Loved: A Cup of Water Under My Bed by Daisy Hernandez. Wow! What a book. I highlighted just about every page in that book.

9. Abby from @bookmarkedbya

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: I'm Abby — an avid reader based in Houston. I'm also a lover of houseplants, dogs, and cross-stitching. You can usually find me on the couch with my pup, Murphy, a good book, and a glass of bubbly.

What Followers Can Expect: You can expect fun, honesty, and a wide range of book recommendations from young adult fiction to memoirs and everything in between. And I think I'm funny, so maybe some laughs!

A Recent Book I Loved: I'm always ready to love what I'm reading, and fortunately, that is often the case for me! Recently, I adored Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. It was pure joy. I loved the rich, complex portrayal of a trans boy — living and loving and being a badass, fighting for his family to respect his identity and smashing through barriers! I’m obsessed with the portrayals of brujx and their magical powers and loved learning more about Dia de Los Muertos. There’s even a twist at the end that I was not at all expecting! This YA is as close to perfect as I’ve found, and I so highly recommend it.

10. Hannah from @thepaperbackbruncher

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: Hey, I'm Hannah, and I am an Arizona millennial bookstagrammer. I have an "energizer bunny" enthusiasm for books (aka I can't stop, won't stop). You can find me dancing (badly), telling dad jokes (well), and sharing my social media tips and tricks. I try to make my account as fun as possible because reading should be fun and being serious is boring.

What Followers Can Expect: The Paperback Bruncher is full of all sorts of bookish variety. I love featuring Little Free Libraries, stylish book-inspired outfits, livestreams with other bookstagrammers and booktokers, books in all formats (audiobooks are my jam), my passion for my local library, and more! Posting reels is definitely my favorite part of Instagram — besides chatting with bookish friends in my DMs.

A Recent Book I Loved: I recently read the new release The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon. Solomon somehow made tropes we see all the time seem new and exciting again (enemies to lovers, fake dating... and ONE BED?!), and I can't stop recommending this hilarious romance. Shay Goldstein has followed in her father's footsteps, finding a career in public radio. She is a damn good producer, but dreams of being on air. Enter the new self-assured hire, Dominic, who is only interested in serious radio...none of that "puff piece" type content that Shay is so good at. They instantly butt heads, but with the station struggling to stay afloat, Shay pitches a concept of a new show, cohosted by exes. Their boss appoints them as the two for the job, even though they never dated. Add this one to your TBR — you won't be sorry!

About Me: I’m a born and raised Mainer and a stay-at-home mom to three little boys. I have a love of everything related to books in all forms: print, ebook, and audio! You can always find me listening to an audiobook or devouring a true crime documentary or podcast!

What Followers Can Expect: If I’m lucky enough to earn a follow, I hope I don’t disappoint! I read a wide variety of genres so I’ll have a little something for everyone. I also have a love of '90s nostalgia, so my stories are often full of funny memes, '90s memories, or a sad video if you need a good cry!

A Recent Book I Loved: A book I absolutely devoured was The Babysitter by Liza Rodman and Jennifer Jordan. It’s the perfect mix of true crime and memoir, which are two of my favorite genres. It’s incredibly chilling but so well written. This will be a true crime novel I recommend to anyone interested in the subject. Informative but not written dry or like a textbook in any capacity. I applaud both writers for diving deep into secrets and sharing so much with the audience.⁣⁣

12. Jasmine from @magicinsalem

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: My name is Jasmine and I live in Salem, Massachusetts. I love tea, books, and finding joy in simple pleasures that allow me to live a slow, intentional life.

What Followers Can Expect: My followers can expect a mix between curated flatlays and lifestyle shots. I love photographing and sharing content like my latest read, indoor cozy snapshots and coffee, plus some New England architecture. Living in Salem, I'm lucky to have a lot of history around me, and a lot of it overlaps with classic literature!

A Recent Book I Loved: As someone who adores (and honestly misses!) the 2000s, I just finished reading Jessica Simpson's biography Open Book . It's written in a way where I felt like she was my friend, telling me about the wild ride she's had in life and Hollywood. It was a quick, easy read but still incredibly insightful.

13. Sowmya from @bookishelflife

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: My name is Sowmya, originally from southern India but the USA has been my home for over a decade now. I live in North Carolina with my husband, my 7-year-old daughter, and my fur baby Thor, who you might see on my feed occasionally. My grandfather was a master storyteller. I grew up listening to him telling me stories of Indian mythology and folklore. I owe my passion for reading to him.

What Followers Can Expect: My first love will always be fantasy. People can expect a lot of gushing and fangirling over fantasy books on my account, particularly YA fantasy. I am also an advocate of #ownvoices and diverse reads as I believe that representation matters A LOT. Along with reviews and recommendations, people will also find some goofy stories, snippets of my daily life, and mental health talk on my posts and stories. I consider my feed a positive and safe space in the community. I am very friendly and a rather chatty person, so you can come say hello anytime. Just make sure you read my favorite books or I will try to convince (aka nag) you to pick them up. ;)

A Recent Book I Loved: This is a tough one because I read a lot of great books last year! My current obsessions are Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco and The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune. I read an advanced reader copy of Kingdom of the Wicked back in August and my obsession hasn’t ceased since then!

14. Amber from @byamberburns

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: I'm Amber and I'm pretty much obsessed with books and creating content. I live in Philadelphia where I work full time as a digital content strategist and also create content as a blogger and YouTuber. When I'm not reading or working, you can find me taking long walks through the city and popping into my favorite coffee shop for a (socially distant, masked up) latte (to go).

What Followers Can Expect: I like to think of my blog and social media as my "URL" living room, so you'll find the kind of things you'd talk about when coming over to visit a good friend. I, of course, talk about the books I'm reading and loving, but I also like to share content on mental wellness and how I'm doing my best to survive and thrive in quarantine.

A Recent Book I Loved: Just like the rest of the world right now, I am absolutely obsessed with Bridgerton ! I started reading the books on Kindle once the show dropped and I'm literally eating them up like candy.

15. Danzi from @danzibooks

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: My name is Danielle, but you can call me Danzi! I was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, and I currently live in Washington, DC. I’ve been an avid reader since childhood, and I always got in trouble for reading until all hours of the morning. Don’t get me wrong – I still read until all hours of the morning, but now I just don’t get in trouble. I regularly choose books over people, and I’m rarely sorry for it.

What Followers Can Expect: Honest reviews, diverse recommendations, and (my attempts at) gorgeous photos! I love reading YA and adult science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary fiction, and I showcase these stories from BIPOC authors, including writers from the Caribbean Diaspora. I also use my page to manage my anxiety, and I encourage my followers to prioritize their mental health. I’m grateful that it has not only been a creative outlet, but also a way to build community and make genuine friendships. Black Bookstagram is magical, and my B2Weirdos are everything!

A Recent Book I Loved: The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna! What a beautiful story of grief and grit, betrayal and belonging, trauma and triumph. It is dark and feminist and has everything I want in YA – rich world-building, meaningful themes, critical examination of power structures. And most importantly, Black Girl Magic!

16. Sam from @never_ending_novels

About Me: Bonjour, everyone! I would describe myself as not all there — but I’m here!

What Followers Can Expect: My followers can expect a good time and a safe place to chat...and to expect the unexpected.

A Recent Book I Loved: A recent book that I truly loved was From Blood And Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout!

17. Lauren from @agalsgottaread

About Me: I’m a special education teacher and when I’m not teaching my tiny humans, I’m probably planning my wedding for June! I prefer series over stand-alone books, dogs over cats, iced coffee over hot, hammocks over beach towels...and if I bring home one more plant I think my fiancé will call off our wedding.

What Followers Can Expect: If you stumble across my account, you’ll find my random thoughts and my amateur photography skills on some books I like. I read a wide variety of genres, but you’ll mostly see a bunch of thrillers, fantasy, and YA with a sprinkle of romance!

A Recent Book I Loved: A recent book that I really enjoyed was Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur, I highly recommend!

18. Bernie from @apaperbacklife

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: I’m a 23-year-old Latina living in Texas. I’m working on getting my MLIS. It’s my dream to make a career out of my love of books!

What Followers Can Expect: If you stumble upon my bookstagram you can expect to find lots and lots of picture of me with my cup of tea (or coffee! Depending on how much caffeine I need that day) and whatever book I’m reviewing that day. Usually a contemporary book.

A Recent Book I Loved: What You Wish For by Katherine Center. It was such a feel-good book! It’s definitely going on my favorite books of the year list! I loved the writing style, the dialogue, our quirky main character, the romance, the fact that it made me laugh, and how invested in the characters I became. I loved that it made me feel all sunny and warm inside. I dare you to read this book and not fall in love with the characters! Or the setting, for that matter. I was ready to pack my bags and head to Galveston after reading this.

What Followers Can Expect: My followers can expect book aesthetics, silly anecdotes, honest reviews/recs, and lots and lots of love!

A Recent Book I Loved: I recently finished the last 500 pages of The Priory Of The Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon in under 24 hours, and I loved every single page. Check out my BookTube video about it here !

20. Gisselle from @gissellereads

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: I am from Puerto Rico and currently live in Atlanta. I rediscovered my love for reading three years ago when I suddenly had some free time after leaving a job in public accounting. I am a CPA by day and book blogger by night. I love reading across all genres and discussing books with other book lovers. I started my bookstagram account two years ago and my blog ( gissellereads.com ) one year ago.

What Followers Can Expect: I read books across all genres, so you can expect to see variety in my account. You’ll see diversity not only in genres but also authors. I love posting creative pictures and book reviews, and you’ll see the occasional appearance of my dog, Dante. I enjoy recommending books with themes — for seasons and all things book related.

A Recent Book I Loved: I fell in love with the young adult genre in 2020. I used to not read YA because I literally thought it was meant to be read by teenagers, and I was so wrong! I realized this was a special genre after reading Elizabeth Acevedo’s books ( Clap When You Land and With The Fire On High ) and quickly started reading more of the genre. I stumbled upon Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe , and it is a book that will stay with me for a while. What I loved the most about this book is the characters: I was so attached to them by the end of the book that I didn’t want it to end. The relationship between Ari and Dante is so beautiful and heartbreaking at times. If you like audiobooks please do yourself a favor and listen to it in audio. It is narrated by Lin Manuel Miranda and it is perfection.

21. Lupita from @lupita.reads

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: My name is Lupita I am a columnist for the Washington Independent Review of Books and a book curator for BESE media company, founded by actress and activist Zoe Saldana. I am a passionate reader amplifying and highlighting books written by authors of color through my bookstagram account.

What Followers Can Expect: I think people who follow along with my bookish journey can expect intimate reflections about the books I read. The ways in which they might have taught me something new or helped me grow or give me language for a lived experience I didn't have language for before. There is also sweaty selfies, books and beer photos, and of course my family.

A Recent Book I Loved: A recent book I really enjoy and haven't stopped thinking about is Milk Blood Heat by Dantiel W. Moniz. There's something about the subtle but arresting descriptive lines like, "I had two hands held out, waiting to receive my due" followed by a thing that is heavy, in this case/story a character lamenting the requests and urgencies of a family and friends to become a mother only to miscarry. It's moments like this sprinkled through this collection that makes it near impossible not to see yourself as a witness in a room to these stories and characters.

22. AJ from @readingwithglamour

best book review accounts on instagram

About Me: I'm a Virgo and introverted extrovert, born and raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia. I currently live in Houston. I'm a Howard University graduate...H-U! You know! I've been an educator for 10 years (currently a school counselor).

What Followers Can Expect: Followers can expect reviews and highlights of BIPOC authors, genuine engagement (I enjoy interacting with my followers), fun reels, and a little glamour (no pun intended!). I also started #saintsofbookstagram to highlight faith-based books and literature to share the message of grace and hope.

A Recent Book I Loved: I'm a church girl at heart, so Deesha Philyaw's The Secret Lives of Church Ladies has been the highlight of my most recent reads. It's not your typical book about women in the Christian church. It's an exposé of fictional short stories reflecting real life scenarios that, ironically, contradict all the things Church girls are taught to be and do. I believe that every Church girl can find a piece of herself in these stories. It's a must-read.

Why is Instagram good for authors?

For starters, Instagram has a hyper-engaged audience. The latest Instagram report shows there are over one billion Instagram users every month , with 60% logging in daily. These numbers mean the platform is now the fastest growing social media website. So, having an Instagram page along with a Facebook author page can be super beneficial for finding and connecting with readers.

You also get better visibility on Instagram compared to Facebook and Twitter. More than that, the rate of engagement with Instagram is better than all the others combined . This offers great potential for authors to reach new readers and develop stronger engagement with their existing fans.

Author Belinda Pollard used Instagram to grow her platform to great success. In her first six months, she met journalists who accepted book copies, found bookstore owners who agreed to stock copies of her book and connected directly with people who ended up purchasing her book. Not too shabby for six months’ work!

Here are some ways you can benefit from an Instagram account:

The biggest benefit of using Instagram for authors is that it offers greater opportunities to grow your following. Because Instagram's users are so active, if you consistently post quality content (more about that later), people are more likely to read it and engage with you than on other social media sites .

Here are a few strategies you can use to grow your following:

  • Follow bloggers who review books: If you do, it will increase the chances of your book getting reviewed.
  • Connect with people who follow authors in your genre: Rather than connecting with other authors, look at their list of followers to find engaged readers.
  • Use relevant hashtags: Make sure you’re using the right hashtags so readers can find your work (more on this later).

Not only do you connect with new readers, but Instagram also makes it easier to get more familiar with your existing audience. The more your followers see you behind the scenes, the more they’ll see you as an authority in your field. Along with that, they’ll see you as a person, rather than just an author. Many writers use Instagram to give their audience a peek behind the curtains.

Instagram is newer compared to other social media such as Facebook and Twitter, which many would argue have reached their saturation point.

Facebook is full of ads and other messages these days, making it almost impossible to get good exposure on posts from your page.

Though there are ads and other messages on Instagram, it has not reached the saturation point–especially for authors. While Instagram is growing for authors, you can still get in somewhat early, which is a huge advantage.

Some authors use Instagram to keep their fans and followers updated. In fact, you can keep your readers up-to-date on your entire writing process, from jotting down ideas all the way to publication. This way your book will be more top-of-mind when it becomes available for purchase — that's a good thing.

Let’s face it. You didn’t become an author so you could spend hours on social media liking pages and commenting on posts. When it comes to social media, it can feel like you’re on a treadmill–always moving, but never getting anywhere.

So, do you need both Instagram and Facebook pages? Or can you just use one?

Personally, I think you do need a Facebook page. Even if you don’t use it much, you’ll want a Facebook page to run ads. Where Facebook pages tend to struggle is engagement. In the old days of Facebook, you could post to your page, and it would be seen by most of your followers. Now, only a tiny percentage of your audience actually sees your posts.

Instagram for authors comes in handy for connection. You’ll have direct access to your followers and they’ll be able to see more of your posts. Instagram also seems like a more personal platform as opposed to a Facebook page.

All that said, many readers are on one platform but not the other, so using both isn't a bad idea. You can recycle your content from one platform to the other to get more exposure without much more work.

How to set up an Instagram author page

When creating an Instagram page for your author business, you'll want to create a business page, instead of a personal account. Having a business account will give you access to ads, along with better reporting metrics for your author page . Creating an account with Instagram’s platform is easy.

Unlike Facebook or Twitter, Instagram is a platform recommended for mobile devices. So, if you’ve never used Instagram before, you’ll want to download the app. This app is available on different devices such as smartphones and tablets. And you can find it in just about every app store available.

If you want to use Instagram on a desktop computer, visit the Instagram website .

Once you have downloaded the app, launch it and create your Instagram account. There are two ways of creating the account:

  • Sign up using your email address or you can use your phone number. Then provide the username you want to use on the account.
  • Create it through your Facebook account. Login to your Facebook and then link your account. If you’ve used an author email to sign up for Facebook, this should be the option you choose.

If you have already created an account, you just need to sign in and then proceed to the profile page.

When you first register with Instagram, you’ll automatically begin with a personal profile. However, if you want to use Instagram for your author business, connect your account to a Facebook business page.

To do that, complete the following:

  • Click the profile icon to access your profile. You'll know you're on your profile when you see your posts and profile picture.
  • From here, tap on the three parallel lines in the top right corner of the screen.
  • Click the settings cog at the top of the menu.
  • Tap on ‘Account.'
  • At the very bottom of the ‘Account' menu, tap on ‘Switch to Professional Account.'
  • Click the prompt to connect to Facebook. Select “Choose a page,” and set the page to “public.” Click “OK.”
  • Instagram will then ask for permission to manage your Facebook pages. Look through the list of Facebook business pages you’ve already created. Select the right page and click “Next.”

To finish your profile, you must give an email , phone number, and address for your business. Fill in at least one of these contact fields to proceed. Don’t be surprised if the app auto-fills a part of this since it’s connected to your Facebook page.

Click “Done,” and go to your profile. A new graph icon should appear at the top of the Instagram app. This is your Insights page where you can find extra tracking and business metrics.

Set a title for your page and choose the category that best describes your business. While there are over 1000 business categories you can choose from, you’ll most likely be selecting “author”.

Go to your profile and click “Edit Profile.” Here you can add a photo, bio , and website link. Consider book Instagrammer Elizabeth Sagan’s profile for instance. In her Instagram profile, she includes a related Instagram page, an email for inquiries, and her most important link.

What you should post on Instagram

As mentioned earlier, what you post plays a huge part in how successful Instagram for authors can be. For maximum engagement, you’ll want to post quality content consistently. Here are a few ideas on what you can post on your Instagram page.

There are lots of great things you can post on Instagram that can grab a new reader's attention. If you post exclusive sneak peeks into your day, it will help you connect with your audience and be more relatable. While not all of your audience can relate to a book, they can relate to someone who enjoys time with their family and pets.

Share with your audience interesting things about your life — things that make you happy — and include some behind the scenes fun. Essentially, moments you’d want to share with friends.

Stephanie Danler offers her audience snapshots into her daily life, her writing process, and getting caught working on vacation (haven’t we all been there).

Quotes have been a staple of Instagram for years now. Inspiring quotes are easy to digest, very share-able, and have high engagement. Magazine and online course provider Foundr used mostly quotes to grow their Instagram page to over two-million subscribers.

You can even use quotes from your upcoming books. Melissa Frey, for example, has done this with her book the Prophecy of the Codex.

You can turn to Instagram to promote any upcoming books that are on the horizon. By posting the book’s cover — along with any other promo images — you can build anticipation for your new release.

4 Tips for Looking Like a Pro on Instagram

Since Instagram is a visual platform, many accounts have an over-arching theme to their profiles. The theme can come from the posts, or even the colors used. Booknerdbecky is a book blogger with a great account that has an incredibly consistent look and feel to it.

Stories are videos and images that stay at the top of your Instagram profile for 24 hours . They’re an awesome way to show glimpses of your daily life and share funny little tidbits. Instagram stories also have high engagement rates, with popular accounts boasting over a 92% completion rate .

Plus, when you reach the 10,000 follower milestone, you gain access to Instagram’s “swipe up’” feature. After swiping, followers are then taken to a link of your choosing outside of Instagram. Use this to direct people to your author website or to your book's sales page.

3. Keep it Relevant

While it's important to be yourself on Instagram, you also don't want to spread yourself too thin or post about every idea that you have. You want to keep things relevant to your intentions, which I assume (since you're a writer) have something to do with your writing.

You need to know what your target audience is, and then make sure you're delivering content that is relevant to that audience. Otherwise they will not engage with you as well, and that will sink your chances of getting picked up by Instagram's algorithm.

So pick that part of yourself that you want to shine the spotlight on, and angle each Instagram post to be a variation on that theme. It will make things a lot better.

4. Be Consistent

As with most social media platforms, consistency is key. That is why I generally recommend authors only pick one or two social media platforms that they like, then run with those. Because to be consistent on too many platforms would be exhausting after enough time, and would likely cause burnout .

So you'll want to keep posting, post similar content, and post all the time.

If this is a problem to constantly check into Instagram, you could consider using a service like Buffer to scheduled a bunch of posts all at once so they appear over time.

In addition to posting consistently, you should also engage consistently. By this I mean be sure to take time responding to comments, commenting on other people's Instagram pages, liking posts you find interesting, etc. This will also boost your chances of increased exposure.

Tools to use with Instagram

By now, you’ve probably noticed the power that Instagram can have on your business. But it can be a lot of work. Luckily, there are some tools that can help you with your Instagram page.

One thing I don’t like about Instagram is their sub-par link sharing. Unlike other platforms, you can’t add links to your posts. In fact, you can only have one link in your bio, which is where a lot of accounts steer their users to. Luckily there’s a tool called Linktree that allows you to store all your links on an easy to use dashboard. This way, when a user clicks your Instagram bio link, they’ll see various links and resources.

This is great when you want to give people the option of buying your book, reading your blog, or downloading a recent podcast interview, etc. Here’s an example of what that might look like.

There are plenty of apps that let you schedule Instagram posts. Back in the early Instagram days, you had to post manually. And for marketers, it was a nightmare.

Luckily, today things are a much less tedious. Platforms like Later and Hootsuite are helpful Instagram scheduling tools.

Examples of Instagram Authors Who Are Killing It!

We've compiled a list of authors who have great Instagram accounts, and who you should definitely follow if you want a good sense of what it should look like.

We touched on hashtags earlier, but they deserve their own section. Using hashtags can boost your profile’s growth quickly.

You can try a variety of tasks, but the most important goals are to use hashtags strategically, engage yourself on Instagram, post regularly, ask questions, and experiment. The more you engage and experiment, the more you will learn about what works and what doesn't.

How much do Instagram writers make?

This depends on how many follows you have. For writers, 10,000 followers results in an estimated $88 per post, assuming you are engaging in affiliate marketing or your own books. If you have more followers, that number will be higher. For example, influencers with a million followers can earn over $600 per post.

Can I sell my book on Instagram

Yes, you can sell your book on Instagram. It has been proven to be one of the best ways to build a following and thereby sell your book on Instagram. Beware, however. You have to put in the work in order to sell books. Throwing up a few posts on Instagram and hoping for sales will not cut it.

What should an author post on Instagram?

There are many great post ideas of authors, including cover reveals, unboxing videos, quotes, book reviews, Bookstagram graphics, news in your field, sharing other books in your genre, sharing a slice of your life, etc. The important thing is that you remain consistent.

Can I post poetry on Instagram?

Yes, you can absolutely post poetry on Instagram. In fact, InstaPoetry has taken off in the last few years. You can post it via quote posts, or record yourself reciting your poems. It's a great way to make your poetry far more engaging than just a printed page.

What is the best time to post on Instagram for writers?

While times tend to change, some data suggests that the best time to post to Instagram is between 2am and 5pm eastern time, with 5pm and between 8-9am being the best times. The best day to post on Instagram is on Wednesdays.

How often should writers post on Instagram?

I would recommend at least once per day, but it really depends on your comfort level. However, the more you post, and the more frequently you post, the more likely you are to find engagement and growth in your Instagram page. So expect to post at least once per day if possible.

10 thoughts on “ Instagram for Writers [2024]: How to Get the Most out of It ”

Thank you. This was really helpful. As an aspiring writer, I wanted to ask you if I should create another account on instagram for my writing work or should I use the existing one only?

That depends. I love using Facebook for personal, so I don’t mix the two. But for Instagram, I use my personal. But that’s just my preference.

Thanks for these great informations! I have a question: how do I create a business facebook page if I don’t want people to know that I am the author? I’m asking because I use a pseudonym on my books, but I have a personal facebook with my name. I found that we are not allowed to create two or more facebook profiles, and Im pretty sure we can’t create one with a pseudonym. I’m afraid to create the business facebook and people find my real name as the owner or admin. Thanks in advance.

As a first time author on Kindle e books, I chose to use a pseudonym. Can I open an Instagram account under my pseudonym rather than my real name. I am an ex- police officer and would wish not to disclose my identity to a larger audience. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you can.

I was wondering now that we have the option to be on a creator account for instagram, if we (authors) should switch our business accounts to that?

That comes down to your personal preference. I personally don’t but I don’t have a major reason to separate between the two.

Great info. I could not find the profile link to link to Facebook. I’ll have to go to YouTube I guess to figure out how to do this. I’ll also be reading your post on hashtags for writers since I don’t know how to use them. I’ve never been on Instagram so it’s a new universe for me!!!

No problem – yeah, hashtags really help with discoverability.

Did you ever find the link to FB in the profile? I also don’t see where to change to a Professional Account.

Natural Magic , by Renée Bergland (Princeton) . Although Charles Darwin and Emily Dickinson are not known to have ever crossed paths, this study finds meaning in their shared enchantment with the natural world. In the eighteen-thirties, as “natural philosophy” began to be reframed as “natural science,” emotion and wonder were eclipsed by objectivity and mastery. Darwin and Dickinson resisted this binary: Darwin saw his theory of natural selection as an occasion for humility, relating humans to other species; Dickinson, whose poetry reflects her extensive scientific education and interest in Darwin’s ideas, depicted the natural world with both botanical specificity and attention to its splendors. Bergland links their thinking to an earlier tradition of “natural” (as opposed to supernatural) magic, which emphasized the interconnectedness of life and valued emotion as a form of understanding.

Traces of Enayat , by Iman Mersal (Transit) . Literary obsession and detective work merge in this biography of Enayat al-Zayyat, an Egyptian writer who died by suicide in 1963, at the age of twenty-six, years before the publication of her only novel. Following the threads of al-Zayyat’s life, Mersal depicts the Egypt in which she grew up and the largely vanished Cairo where she lived, while chronicling her search for the forgotten author. “To trace someone,” Mersal writes, “is a dialogue that is perforce one-sided.” Indeed, despite assiduous research and interviews with surviving friends and family, Mersal experiences “despair at the possibility of knowing” the true story of al-Zayyat, whose remnants she embroiders with photographs, speculation, and personal reflections, leaving behind a seductive mystery.

Whale Fall , by Elizabeth O’Connor (Pantheon) . Manod, the observant narrator of this début novel set on the cusp of the Second World War, lives on a sparsely populated Welsh island where, one night, a whale washes up on the beach and dies shortly thereafter. Soon, two researchers turn up to document the customs of the islanders. Manod agrees to assist them, translating phrases (such as “sheep farmer”) and cultural realities (the people cannot swim). In time, however, misunderstandings arise between researchers and subject, imbuing their relationship with both alienation and tenderness. Stubborn transgressions committed by the interlopers testify to the hazards of anthropology and the delusions of so-called progress.

Cinema Love , by Jiaming Tang (Dutton) . This moving if uneven début novel tracks a handful of characters who emigrate, in the nineteen-eighties, from rural China to Manhattan’s Chinatown. They quickly find that it is one thing to leave home and another to move on from the world that has been left behind. That world includes a ramshackle movie theatre, the Mawei City Workers’ Cinema, a place where gay men go to seek forbidden love—and where their wives go to look for them. Part ghost story, part love story, and part tale of hardscrabble immigrant life, this intricately plotted novel asks whether, in the end, it is better to forgive or to forget.

The Brooks Ghost 16 Is One of the Most Popular Shoes in the US—For Good Reason

By Tanner Bowden

Ghosting is no good, very bad, don't do it—unless we're talking about Brooks' Ghost running shoe, which is not just the company's best-seller and GQ's top running shoe pick, but also the most purchased performance running shoe in the United States. As such, if you're “Ghosting” your runs, we wholeheartedly co-sign your efforts and wish you well.

The Ghost has been steadily updated since its inception—never falling prey to trends of the time. For instance, when it was first launched in 2008, the minimalist craze started by Christopher McDougall's 2009 book Born to Run was in full effect. Since then, we've seen the maximalist craze that has come in response and the emergence of super shoes with carbon plates. Ever steady, the Ghost—now on its 16th edition—has become a go-to shoe many runners return to pair after pair.

My experience with the Ghost

Admittedly, I haven't been a longtime Ghost runner. While I've run in previous shoe versions, I missed many iterations. (Being a longtime running shoe tester means I never really get to settle in with one model for too long.) To better grasp the Ghost's ethereal magic, I polled a few friends who love it. "I can run in them for way more miles than other shoes," one told me. "It really meets the moment for me and is very universal: light yet supportive, responsive and fun," another said.

These insights only made me more keen to lace up the 16. Based on everyone's experience with the Ghost, predictable reliability seems to be a strong thread running through its engineered mesh construction. Like a go-to loop around the neighborhood, the shoe, according to its devotees, makes for no-complications, easy, and fun running. The last time I ran in the Ghost, I lived in a different city and in a different state, but I can still remember the 4.5-mile route that I ran there most afternoons. My current go-to loop looks a lot different, but just how changed is the Ghost?

Over the past few weeks, I sought to find out whether the shoe still lives up to its exalted expectations or if taking it out for the first time in a few years would be a bad run down memory lane. I ran slow recovery miles and fast intervals in it, but mostly, I ran happy-medium easy miles in it, which is what I discovered this shoe (and perhaps most runners, too) is most interested in doing. Below, I go deeper into how, during all these test runs—on sidewalks, farm roads, and bike paths—the Ghost 16 seemed to fade into the background and why that's a good thing.

How do they look?

The Ghost 16 is a pretty traditional daily-use running shoe: It's got an engineered mesh upper and a fairly fat midsole made up of Brooks' nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 foam (the Ghost 15 used v2), now atop the company's proprietary RoadTack rubber. There's not much flashy about it, and even though it's available in a handful of colors, most play it pretty safe. This might be my biggest knock against it—in today's running age, every shoe seems to be available in electric hues and crossfade ombré, in addition to standards like all-black and all-beige. But the Ghost keeps things simple and straightforward. I get it, though; not everyone wants racecar red or slime green on their feet, and given the Ghost's sales, Brooks probably knows what it's doing.

How do they fit?

Longtime believers in the Ghost won't notice much of a difference in the 16—the updated foam and RoadTack outsole are the main changes. It has a “traditional” feel, meaning that it has a very supportive heel, an upper that conforms to the foot and provides decent wiggle room up front for the toes, and a 12-millimeter heel-toe drop. Low-drop shoes have been around long enough that, for some, that'll sound like a lot.

I didn't notice the high drop on my first run with the Ghost 16. What I did note, as I headed out the door for a 4.5-mile out-and-back, is that the shoe reminded me of many others I've run in in the past, but not many that I've run in recently. There's support, but the Ghost is still a neutral running shoe with a high-stack heel, but the DNA LOFT v3 is more stable than squishy. None of it felt overkill, rounding the corner of my last mile to the short incline home (even for someone like me who often runs in more minimal models).

Image may contain Clothing Footwear Shoe and Sneaker

While the Ghost is traditional, it's by no means stodgy. These days, a lot of shoes have a foam-facilitated bounce or a rockered sole for forward momentum or an extended heel that you can see or feel on the run. But with the Ghost, I didn't notice anything like that, not even the 12-millimeter drop. It felt as good on my feet at the end of each run as it did at the start—it seemed to want to move forward, and it handled a few strides like it handled a recovery pace.

All this is to say, I didn't notice the Ghost. Maybe that's why Brooks named it so; it fades into the background of the run. Not noticing, i.e. familiarity like this in the running is good. Again, it's like going out on a well-known route. I frequently still drive into town from where I live now, and I often run my old loops. When I do, I know the distance markers, and I don't have to think about any of the turns, where the crossings are, or what it'll be like if it rains or snows; it's all predictable. That's what running in the Ghost has been like, even after so long.

Are they worth it?

You don't need me to say that based on my testing, I think the Ghost 16 will be a great running shoe for many people—enough runners wear the Ghost to make that case. But I can say that I think this is because the shoe seems best for handling daily miles, even if they're approaching or in the double digits. If you're looking for something specialized, like a low-drop shoe or something poppy for speedwork, the Ghost might not be the best fit. But if you're in need of a regular old running shoe, the Ghost is proof that, even in the era of super trainers, excellence doesn't have to mean fancy features.

New Sonos Ace Headphones Promise All-Day Comfort and Ease of Use

The noise-canceling Ace, the company's first headphone set, costs $450 and arrives in stores on June 5

Sonos Ace headphones in black and white.

Sonos, known for its extensive lineup of multiroom speakers , is introducing its first-ever headphones. The high-end, noise-canceling Ace headphones are available for preorder now and will ship in early June.

While the announcement is big news in the audio industry, the Ace headphones, $450, follow a largely conventional design, emphasizing comfort more than cutting-edge technology. They’re closed-back headphones with active noise canceling and a transparency mode you can use to permit some ambient sounds from your surroundings, all of which are pretty standard features among high-end—and not-so-high-end—headphones today.

The biggest innovation is the ability to “swap” the audio from a Sonos soundbar to the headphones, allowing you to watch TV without disturbing others.

At a launch event in New York City, I got some hands-on interaction with the Ace headphones, including a little listening time. I’ve also requested a model to get a closer look at the audio swap feature and the overall user experience before the June 5 on-sale date.

Once we purchase the model at full retail, CR’s testers will fully evaluate the Ace headphones in our labs.

We’ll update this article as we spend more time with the new headphones and compare them to the top models in our extensive headphone ratings .

A Minimalist Design

Like most headphones, the Ace headphones can be paired via Bluetooth straight to a phone, laptop, or other source device. This differs from Sonos speakers, which need to run through the company’s smartphone app. (A recent revamp of the app has caused some controversy among brand loyalists, with many lamenting features that were lost in the transition.) Still, access to more advanced Ace features, like the tone controls and head tracking settings, does require access to the Sonos app.

While lacking never-seen-before features, the design does seem to be well executed. The model doesn’t stand out when viewed from across a room, but it’s sleek and even minimalist. And while the Ace headphones look nice when you’re holding them in your hand, they’re also actually flattering when sitting on your head, which isn’t the case with many competitors. These Sonos headphones come in two colors: a basic black and a soft white that reportedly went through more than 25 iterations before Sonos nailed the color.

The materials feel high-quality, as you’d expect for a model with a $450 price, but there’s not a lot of metal, which reflects the company’s other design goal: comfort.

“What is the biggest pain point [for headphone wearers]? Usually, it’s the headband or the ear cups or something that’s uncomfortable after an hour or two,” Patrick Spence, the Sonos CEO, said in an interview with CR. “We found the right mixture of things that will make [the Ace] comfortable all day.”

I didn’t get to test the company’s all-day comfort claim, but the Ace headphones are lightweight if not exactly gossamer. And in my brief trial, the memory-foam-padded headband minimized pressure points and the user-replaceable vegan leather earpads (shown below) were comfy while providing a substantial degree of passive noise canceling. The Ace’s ergonomics are quite straightforward as well, with two buttons on the right ear cup: a master button that allows you to pause content and control volume and another button that lets in ambient sound (Sonos calls it Aware mode)—plus a single button on the left that turns the headphones on and off.

The Soundbar Swap

The launch event included a brief hands-on demonstration. Audio-wise, the Ace headphones are promising, with a balanced overall sound signature and the ability to pinpoint instruments on a wide and deep soundstage. But my limited listening session involved less-than-familiar music chosen by Sonos, so I’ll wait for the more thorough and critical evaluation from our testers before I say more.

As for the soundbar swap feature, it’s not exactly a new twist; other televisions and home theater systems allow you to pair headphones for private listening. But that’s often a cumbersome process, one that requires digging into menus to make the switch. The Ace headphones complete the hand-off—and the return of the content to the soundbar—with a single button press on the ear cup. At a minimum, this functionality allows an Ace user to binge “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” without disturbing other members of the household, who may be trying to work, think, or sleep. But the Ace headphones hope to up the ante with spatial audio capabilities that legitimately immerse you in the movie you’re watching. While these headphones might not quite live up to company’s lofty goal of providing a headphone experience that’s essentially indistinguishable from home theater sound, a brief demo with the film “Gravity” revealed that the Ace’s soundstage is reminiscent of what a good soundbar can provide. For the moment, the sound swap functionality is restricted to the Sonos top-of-the-line Arc soundbar , although the company promises that there will soon be compatibility with the first- and second- generation Beam as well as the less expensive Ray .

Are the Sonos Ace Headphones Worth a Look?

We’ll have more detailed information about the performance of the Ace headphones once we get them into our labs, but this quick preview suggests that these are an attractive, thoughtfully designed product. If you’re in the market for top-of-the-line headphones like the Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra, Apple AirPods Max, or Bowers & WIlkins PX7 S2e, the Sonos Ace probably deserves your consideration. Just how well the Sonos Ace headphones stack up against those models will be determined by our more extensive listening tests.
