A small-budget film named Balagam starring Priyadarshi and Kavya Kalyanram in the lead roles gained decent buzz of late. Directed by comedian Venu Yeldandi, the movie is backed by Dil Raju. The film hit the screens today, and let’s find out how it is.

Set in the interior of Telangana, Balagam revolves around the feud between Ailayya (Jayaram) and Narayana (Muralidhar Goud) families. Saailu (Priyadarshi), a youngster, tries his hand at every business but fails to achieve success. Saailu decides to marry so that he can set off the dowry amount against his debt and escape the wrath of moneylenders. Much to Saailu’s shock, his grandfather Komurayya dies, and during the older man’s final rites, Saailu’s marriage gets canceled due to a petty argument. What did Saailu do then? Did he clear his debt? How is Sandhya (Kavya Kalyanram) related to this story? What’s the reason for wrangling between the two families? Watch the film to know the answers.

Plus Points:

One doesn’t feel like watching a film for the whole 131 minutes. Such is the beauty of Balagam. Everything looks completely natural, and the film has a lot of relatability. Be it the village environment, the artists’ body language, the petty quarrels that take place in villages, or the innocence of villagers, everything looks damn realistic, which makes the audience easily connect to the film. The characters are so real who we see in our daily lives.

The idea of exploring human values and emotions and linking them to the death of a person is superb. Recently Rajendra Prasad’s Anukoni Prayanam also came along similar lines. What works with Balagam is the genuine presentation of emotions without any cinematic liberties. Healthy and situational humor will surely bring a big smile to faces. The emotions take center stage in the second hour and are sure to touch the heartstrings.

The director’s idea to tell the story through the usage of folklore songs is brilliant. The Telangana culture is neatly presented throughout, and the customs and traditions are made an integral part of the story. Priyadarshi and Kavya Kalyanram lived in their roles, and it is good that the artists have chosen a heartwarming subject at such a young age.

Director Venu and Racha Ravi are adequate in their roles. Racha Ravi’s scene with Priyadarshi in the second half is hilarious. The casting was on point, and everyone did a fantastic job in the film. Every actor got the Telangana dialect right, and the emotions got conveyed nicely due to the presence of amazing artists. Muralidhar Goud, Roopa, and Jayaram stand out among the supporting cast. The climax portions are brilliantly executed and heart-wrenching.

Minus Points:

More time is taken for the character establishments initially, and this aspect could have been taken care of. The first hour moves at a slow pace, and the proceedings gather momentum only from the interval portions.

Balagam surely is not for those who look for time-pass flicks. There is a lot of honesty in the storytelling, and the film doesn’t have any commercial ingredients as such, which is expected by a section of the audience. The editing could have been better in the first hour.

Technical Aspects:

Bheem Ceciroleo will surprise one and all with his music, and he proved with Balagam that he is just not meant for mass beats. A lot of detailing has gone into the songs representing the customs and traditions. The cinematography by Acharya Venu is authentic, showing the beautiful countryside. The production values are good. The editing is just okay. It is great to see makers backing a film like Balagam believing in the plot.

Special applause to Venu Yeldandi, the director turned comedian, for penning such a heartwarming story and mixing it with the rural heartland. Many scenes show the directorial skills of Venu. The elongated single-shot sequences, kids asking permission to watch television to eliminate boredom amidst 11-day rituals, and the altercation between the legal heirs for their share of property during extreme distress are a few examples to depict the writer in Venu.

The belief that the soul doesn’t attain liberty when crows deny the offering for Shradh is widely known to everyone, and Venu used this point in three different instances to enhance the drama. This worked pretty well for the film. It’s a rarity to see films where the story is given major importance. Balagam is such one flick where the concentration was entirely on storytelling sans any unwanted masala.

On the whole, Balagam is a genuine attempt to explore human values and emotions that is devoid of any commercial ingredients. The film’s trump cards are the natural village atmosphere, heartwarming performances, and gratifying emotional sequences. As mentioned earlier, the film might not sit well with a section of the audience. Barring the slightly slow first half, this film can be watched on big screens this weekend.

'Balagam' movie review: A beautiful exploration of culture and the human condition

A still from the film 'Balagam'

Having watched films like Karnan (2021), Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana (2021), and Angamaly Diaries (2017) I have always yearned for Telugu films to portray and celebrate our culture. My wish has been fulfilled with Balagam . It not only represents the customs of Telangana authentically but is entirely centred around its culture.

For instance, we know that the interval point of any film is utilised to pronounce the central conflict of the story, and in Balagam , the interval point is built around the custom of offering a feast to the soul of the dead. When a crow doesn’t eat it, it is believed that the dead are yet to find peace, and naturally, it’s not considered to be a good sign.

So the family of the deceased patriarch, Komurayya (Sudhakar Reddy, a wonderful find), make the offering and wait for a crow to come down and have it. When it doesn’t happen, it creates emotional unrest--backed by quarrels in the past and egos--among them. And this conflict around the tradition transforms into the film’s core narrative; on one level, it is about the custom and on another level, it is about the people harbouring the custom.

Balagam even looks at these people through the lenses of culture; their egos, and flaws. That apart, their personalities stand as reflections of their responses to everything that happens at a funeral. The detailed portrayal is astounding. Also, the song that captures the last rites of Komurayya, which begins as a celebration and ends in mourning, is effectively shot.

Two characters at opposing ends challenge to throw a bigger feast than the other. The bigger the feast, the larger the number of goats required. Minutes into the film, we get a fair idea about the jaunty Komurayya as he nonchalantly goes on with his day, flirting with women of different ages and interacting with the members of the close-knit community of his village.

The following scene sets up the sturdy character of Komurayya’s angry elder son Aillayya (Jayram, again, great find) and then, his grandson, the ambitious yet unsuccessful Sayilu (a perfectly cast Priyadarshi). Many of Sayilu’s business plans have failed. His external conflict is to repay the load. And even when he learns about his grandfather’s untimely demise, he is more concerned about the possible delay of the engagement with his girlfriend and consequently, receiving the dowry money. The internal conflict is that he is selfishly materialistic at times of great loss. The moment he realises his selfishness and wrongdoings is heart-wrenching and Priyadarshi has effectively portrayed the role.

One of the fascinating aspects of the film is that almost everyone here is grey, but it doesn’t manipulate you to hate or empathise with any particular character. In fact, it only rightly calls them out for their mistakes and misplaced priorities.

balagam movie review rating

Despite the despair in its atmosphere—considering the story takes place in a span of 11 days through a funeral—the film finds humour in many odd ways. From a woman crying persistently to another woman feigning sadness, many such rooted instances show the filmmaker drawing inspiration from lived-in experiences.

Balagam is not infallible, though, and it comes with its own set of flaws. The screenplay gets stuck in a tedium of repetitive scenes towards the end. Likewise, when Sayilu breaks into a dance in the otherwise fun ‘Potti Pilla’, you wonder why this character, that has been so realistic until that point, is suddenly behaving like he’s in a Telugu film. However, it lasts only a short while. This reminds me of a beautiful line in the song that goes ‘Kallulotti pakkana kaarappoosa lekka mana jodi mastuntade (Our pairing is as good as a spicy sev and palm wine)’. The film’s love for the lifestyle it portrays keeps popping up in distinct ways.

The film also doesn’t try to get too inventive with its craft, with the staging and cinematography, despite running the risk of being called too simplistic, serve the story well, although I wish it had played more with the visuals instead of relying much on the dialogues. Meanwhile, the dialogues are the lifeline of the film and they do a wonderful job capturing the life of the Telangana region.

While Venu Yeldandi paints a beautiful portrait, it’s Bheems Ceciroleo who gives it life with his music. Especially, his collaboration with folk musicians for one particular music piece that sums up the entirety of the film and the character arcs, in the end, is noteworthy. This sequence represents the confluence of two of Balagam’s traits: its urge to preach the importance of relationships and its love for the Telangana culture. And one shot in which we see the hands of this family placed one above the other, as they reach the final stage of the funeral, will be etched in my memory for a long time.  It is the image Balagam  stood for.

Balagam Review: Rustic and Emotional

Balagam Review: Rustic and Emotional

Movie: Balagam Rating: 2.75/5 Banner: Dil Raju Productions Cast: Priyadarshi, Kavya Kalyanram, Sudhakar Reddy,  Muralidhar Goud, Jayaram, Roopa Lakshma, Venu and others Music: Bheems Ceciroleo DOP: Acharya Venu Editor: Madhu Presented by: Shirish Producers: Harshith Reddy, Hanshitha Reddy Direction: Venu Yeldandi  Release Date: March 03, 2023

Dil Raju, one of India's most prominent producers, has decided to present content-driven micro-budget films. His daughter and nephew produced "Balagam," a film set in rural Telangana with a unique concept.

Let's find out if they were successful...

Story: In a village in Telangana, a family head Komarayya (Sudhakar Reddy), full of life and vigour, passes away unexpectedly. Sailu (Priyadarshi), his grandson (the son of his eldest son), is in debt and believes that getting married and receiving dowry money will help him pay it off. Sailu's engagement has been put on hold due to the passing of Komarayya.

Komarayya's younger son, who currently resides in Surat, and his daughter, who stopped visiting their family due to a minor issue many years ago, both attend the funeral. Traditionally, pindam is offered on the third day after a death. When a crow lands on the food, that's when the family finally packs up and goes home.

Crows arrive, but not a single one touches the pindam. Will the family members put aside their differences in order to bring peace to the soul of the deceased?

Artistes’ Performances: Each performer is at his or her most authentic. They give very grounded and natural performances. Priyadarshi is completely in character and plays to his strengths.

Kavya Kalyanram is an ideal 'maradalu' for the hero. When family patriarch Komarayya, played by Sudhakar Reddy, makes an appearance early on, he immediately becomes the source of numerous humorous moments. Muralidhar Goud, Jayaram, and Roopa Lakshmi's believable performances add credibility to the story.

Technical Excellence: Bheems Ceciroleo, better known for his mass beats in the recent blockbuster ‘Dhamaka’, adds entirely new flavour. His music here has a distinct style because of its cultural foundations. The mood is enhanced by Bheems' music.

Acharya Venu's effective "palletooru" vignettes are another asset. On the other hand, the editing could have been sharper. The overwhelming number of similar sequences makes the experience feel a bit irritating after a point.

Highlights: Initial humorous sequences The pindam-kaki concept Natural performances

Drawback: Slow narration Repetitive scenes Melodramatic last portion

Analysis Typically, Tamil and Malayalam filmmakers weave stories that pay tribute to their regional roots and ethos. Venu Veldandi, known in films as comedian Tillu, presents a story in a similar vein and with a strong conviction in his debut directorial effort, "Balagam." Set in rural Telangana, the film essentially conveys the message that families should stand together, but the setting, narrative, and treatment are all very different from regular commercial Telugu films.

The family head dies a few minutes into the story, and the film deals with the events that follow his death. Venu narrates the story with dark humor at times, beautifully capturing many sequences that depict rural life.

The sight of rural women sobbing as everyone enters the house to pay their last respects to the deceased is a poignant moment, while Priyadarshi and his bride-to-be secretly romancing while the dead body is in their home is a lighter moment in this dark comedy approach.

The beginning of the sequences appears to be purposefully humorous, whereas the latter part of the story is all about sentiments and tear-jerker moments. No Telugu film has dealt with the concept of crows not touching the food left for the departed soul (a ritual in most Hindu families), and Venu Yaldandi succeeds on this front, revealing ugly scenes of how some family members cannot hide their egos even after the loss of a family head.

The director also handles the singing troupe called for the death ceremony quite well. "Balagam" succeeds because of its raw moments and witty sequences.

However, like most new directors, Venu seems to have lost judgment about the film's duration. His obsession with capturing the minutiae of rural life and family egos is frustrating, as many sequences are repetitive. The emotional drama would have had a greater impact if he had made the film in a shorter and more compact format.

Overall, "Balagam" is a grounded story told in an honest and earthy manner. With the exception of flaws such as repetitiveness and excessive runtime, the film is enjoyable to watch once we become acquainted with the setting and characters. It should not be seen in a regular commercial movie way.

Bottom line: Non-Commercial

What’s it about!

Despite his advanced age, Komarayya (Ketiri Sudhakar Reddy), a family patriarch in a Telangana village, retains vigour and enthusiasm. He is very excited about his grandson’s upcoming wedding. His grandson (Priyadarshi) accumulates debts as a result of his poor business decisions, and when he marries a girl, he hopes to pay them off with dowry money.

Komarayya dies as Sai’s engagement ceremony approaches. His death not only thwarts Sai’s plans, but also exposes the issues his family is dealing with.

The family, as is customary, performs a ritual of “pittaku pettadam” or “pindam” to the departed soul. Crows, on the other hand, do not taste a single piece of pindam, leaving the family members in agony. What would they do if they wanted to please the crows? Or what steps they take to ensure the departed soul’s peace.

The Telugu word “Balagam” refers to one’s kith and kin. Venu Yeldandi’s debut directorial effort “Balagam” discusses the importance of family unity, but this isn’t your typical family drama. One would expect this from a film produced by Dil Raju, who is known for making family films. However, director Venu uses “Chaavu” (death) as a device to emphasise the importance of family unity.

“Rajadhani Nagaramlo Chavu Kooda Pelli Lantide Brother (In cities, even death is celebrated like a marriage),” wrote poet Acharya Athreya in one song. However, there is a tradition in Telangana, particularly in rural areas, of celebrating death with numerous rituals. For 11 days, most non-vegetarian families observe numerous rituals, including serving mutton and alcohol to close relatives for dinner (the more goats are butchered more the rich you are).

On the third day after a death, it is customary to leave out food for the dead and watch as crows pick at it (crows are regarded the departed soul). This is the pivot around which the plot revolves.

Director Venu uses many devices from the genre of dark comedy in his telling of this story. Although the film’s lighter moments can be found in its early stages, the real meat of the drama occurs in the film’s closing minutes. In fact, the romantic thread is not at all effective. Despite the climax being overly melodramatic, Venu’s handling of certain scenes in the second half are touching. Especially, the song in the end is terrific.

What I liked most about “Balagam” was not the family drama but rather the depiction of the different aspects of death in the villages of Telangana, such as the play of Oggu Katha performed to keep family members awake until the funeral was completed and a singing troupe (Budaga Jangala) that extolled the deceased. The changes in the family dynamic after the death of the patriarch are also realistically depicted.

On the downside, the film needed to be concise and deletion of repetitive sequences.

Plus, the film has shades of Raam Reddy’s acclaimed Kannada film, Thithi.

Priyadarshi does a good job of conveying the naiveté of rural youth. Kavya Kalyanram holds up fine. All three of the actors—Ketiri Sudhakar Reddy as Komarayya, Roopa Lakshmi as Komarayya’s daughter, and Muralidhar Goud as her husband—have given very realistic portrayals.

Bheems’s music accentuates the mood. In fact, his songs are the backbone. The camera captures rural life quietly and without being flashy. Director Venu deserves praise for keeping things as authentic as they could be in this telling of the story.

Bottom-line:  With death as its foundation, the story of ‘Balagam’ tells the importance of family unity through its resonant theme and believable characters. The frank depiction of funeral rites and the dry wit are both effective. Director Venu’s attempt to tell an unconventional tale comes with some caveats, including overly melodramatic moments and a lengthy running time.

Director - Venu

Producer - Harshith Reddy, Hanshitha Reddy

Banner - Dil Raju Productions

Music - Bheems Ceciroleo

Priyadarshi might have proved as a good comedian and co-actor. He is also juggling the lead roles in films and web series. His Mallesham (2019) and Loser series have garnered critical acclaim. After a hiatus, he returned to the lead role with a small-budgeted film Balagam. The film helmed by Venu Yeldandi is bankrolled by Dil Raju Productions. For these reasons, the film garnered some attention. Let’s check out what the film offers.

Story Set in a rural milieu, old man Komarayya (Sudhakar Reddy), happy-go-lucky man, is ecstatic about the wedding of his grandson Saayilu (Priyadarshi). Saayilu’s failed businesses push him into debts and he pins high hopes on dowry. Komarayya dies suddenly, thus affecting Saayilu’s plans. But this brings out the underlying family differences between Komarayya’s children. What forms the rest is how the disputes are resolved and how Komaraiah gets a peaceful bid adieu. Who is Sandhya (Kavya Kalyanram) and how she aids Saayilu.

Performances

Priyadarshi knows best what works for him. He chooses an underdog role of Saayilu and he sticks to the character. We see Saayilu and his struggles on screen, but not Priyadarshi. Kavya Kalyanram got a decent role and she pulled it off. Sudhakar Reddy as Komarayya is perfect. The whole story revolves around his character. Jayaram as Komarayya’s elder son Ailayya has an attitude and he portrayed it aptly. Muralidhar Goud of DJ Tillu fame shines as Narayana, brother-in-law of Ailayya and heroine’s father. He has an important role and he does justice. Roopa as Komarayya’s daughter Lakshmi fills her spot. Comedian Racha Ravi brings some relief with laughter in this rather serious and emotional family drama. The film’s supporting cast performed ably.

Technicalities At outset, Balagam has a very thin point. However, this thin line is weaved into a family drama with emotions and occasional humour. Scenes with depth have worked. Good writing and decent making worked for the film. Debutante director Venu did a decent job. Bheems’ music is perfect for the film. The visuals of rural Telangana were well captured, kudos to cinematographer Acharya Venu.

Highlights Family Emotion Telangana Art & Culture Performances

Drawbacks Thin Storyline Slow First Half Weak Love Track

Balagam is not a unique or untold story. It is a regular sight in households in villages. The family emotions are not unheard of. Many films in the past have explored similar the concept of family drama, sentiment and death of the family patriarch. The manner in which it is told and narrated in Balagam makes all the difference. The strength of the film lies in showcasing the art and culture of Telangana. The rural atmosphere in the film is an exact replica of the real-life. In addition to this, the writing is neat and to-the-point with no-nonsense. The makers have opted for a simple and honest film without any deviations from the main story. While debutante director Venu took a chunk of the time in establishing the characters of the film and their every-day life, the film goes in a slow pace and familiar path in the first-half.

However, post-interval, the film’s narration gains momentum. The scenes are decently written with strong emotion. This is what worked for the film in parts. The second-half has many moments that touch one’s hearts. Particularly, there is a scene in pre-climax where Priyadarshi breaks down remembering his loving grandfather and realises how he was ignorant of him so far and how he was selfishly using his grandfather’s death. All these are subtle and yet so impactful. The depth in the scenes are really appreciable. Technically, the film is decent. Drone shots of the village are shot well. Folk songs like Ooru Palleturu, Potti Pilla and Balarama Narasayyo add to the authenticity of Telangana culture. This may not be a film with commercial ingredients that limits the film in theatre format.

Like any movie, this too has its share of shortcomings. There are some cinematic liberties too. The money lender of Saayilu who is portrayed as ruthless and emotionless crook goes absent in crucial portions. This track is half-baked. Even Saayilu’s failed marriage and his love track with his Maradalu Sandhya leaves us craving for more. The reason for the marriage call off could be better and more significant. These are not addressed properly.

Despite a handful of such errors, Balagam’s strong family emotion, solid performances of the cast and good scenes make it a watchable film. The film has a message of unity. There are some takeaways from the film for everyone who admire family. Rural movies like these come occasionally in Telugu whereas we see such experiment attempts in Malayalam often. Despite knowing the limitations, the producer and director have the guts to make such an attempt locally that deserves special mention. Overall, Balagam is an emotional family drama with its heart in the right place.

Verdict: Emotional Family Drama

Movie Review | Balagam: From the playbook called life

balagam movie review rating

Movies dealing with post-death scenarios generally veer between two extremes - either you have something hilarious or something poignant. ‘Balagam’ is a bit of both. It borrows from the playbook called life to take audiences on a meaningful and soul-searching journey. It tells you to rise above petty quarrels and stay united as a “group” or family.

After a long time, you have a movie that will remind you of masters like Hrishikesh Mukherjee whose stories revolved around one family but contained a message for all.

‘Balagam’ is everyman’s story, told with no extravagant special effects or a big star cast.

As they say, the more local you go, the more universal it becomes. The story is set in a picturesque but nondescript village in bangaru Telangana. In fact, the entire movie is an ode to the quintessential local culture, customs, music, and language. It’s a mascot of rural Telangana.

Komrayya (Kethri Sudhakar Reddy), the patriarch of the family dies suddenly. His death jeopardizes his grandson Saiyulu’s (Priyadarshi Pulikonda, natural to the hilt) marriage which is necessary for him as he plans to use the dowry to settle a debt.

The death brings Saiyulu’s estranged aunt Lakshmi (Rooplakshmi) back to the family who stays back for the rituals for 11 days. Her husband Narayana (Murlidhar Ireni) and Sai’s father Ailayya (Kota Jayaram) have been at loggerheads for years now and are not even on talking terms.

Sai’s fiancée is blamed for his grandad’s death and the marriage is called off. As Sai needs money he decides to woo Lakshmi’s daughter Sandhya (Kavya Kalyanram), his cousin so that he can inherit her property.

Meanwhile, the vital post-death ritual of the crow touching the pind (of Komrayya) doesn’t happen.

It is then that Saiyulu decides to exploit this situation in his favour and also bring all the sparring partners in the family together.

‘Balagam’, directed by Venu Yeldandi is a rich gallery portrait of a cross-section of people and events one is likely to come across in a village.

For instance, take the superbly shot death scenes of Komrayya. It will easily remind you of any funeral you might have attended. Here you will come across people who are genuinely mourning the loss of the departed and also people who put up an unnecessary show to express their grief.

Here you also find Sai who despite his grandfather’s death is busy pandering to his would-be. Notwithstanding the gravity of the situation, Narayana and Ailayya are too busy pampering their vain egos. Then you have the local tailor consumed by guilt as he was the last one who had met the deceased and had secretly wished for his death. A bit later you also see how Narayana and Ailayya engage in a game of one-upmanship to show who loved Komrayya more.

It is in this realistic portrayal of characters and situations that lies the strength of ‘Balagam’. Kudos to the writer-director Venu Yeldandi for keeping it simple yet powerful and moving. His matured creation is a humble reminder to one and all that for a good movie what you need first is a strong story and a convincing narrative. It is not the locales or the budget or the star cast that matters. Deft storytelling with detailing is more important than spectacle.

‘Balagam’ might not boast of who’s who in Tollywood but the decent performances by the entire team outshine that of any award winners. They all are natural and perfectly cast. The hero does not flaunt six-pack abs nor does the heroine size zero. But both have a sizzling onscreen chemistry.

In the last 10 minutes of the movie, comes the song which espouses the message that the movie wants to preach. The song makes everyone in the family introspect as it subtly reminds them about their duties and responsibilities towards each other. It makes them realise what they should have been doing instead of what they are doing. It literally tugs at everyone’s heartstrings. It tells them “siblings should always stay in unity and harmony.”

The movie champions the crucial message of love, respect, and unity in a family. In one scene as Sandhya says, “We think our elders think about us only when they are alive. But now I have realized they love us even more after they die.” Except for the computer-generated crow, ‘Balagam’ is natural, a slice-of-life film that you can see with your family on Prime Video. Originally in Telugu, it is available with English subtitles. Do watch it in a group, as the name suggests.

Balagam story is all about human emotions in the rustic and rural backdrop of the interiors of Telangana. Komarayya (Sudhakar Reddy) who mingles with everyone in his village has a grandson Saiyulu. But his father (Jayaram) and uncle (Muralidhar) has age old disputes. What are the disputes, whether Sayilu emerge successful in his plans form the rest of the narration.

Balagam movie : Artists Review

All the artists did not act but lived in those roles. Priyadarshi who is known as a natural performer once again stole the show. He carried the expressions and emotions and elevated the scenes with his screen presence. Kavya Kalyan Ram impressed with her looks. She not only attracted by her looks but also beautified the scenes with her performance. She came out with good emotions and expressions. Sudhakar Reddy who played the role of Priyadarshi's grandfather might have got a limited screen presence but she stole the show with his performance making a powerful impact.

Balagam movie : Technicians Review

Balagam's story readied by Venu Yeldandi is high on emotions and highlighted the thinking of people and the practices still followed by them in the name of superstitions. Venu Yeldandi on debut emerged successful in highlighting how the villagers practice and follow superstitions even though they use modern technology like cell phones. He highlighted the sensitivities quite well and the climax situation makes a powerful impact. It leaves everyone move emotionally.

Veun Yeldandi not only narrated the emotional story in a beautiful way with his interesting screenplay and direction but also made his presence felt as a singer, especially during the climax. He also performed well in an important role.

Acharya Venu's cinematography is realistic and he showed the rural village atmosphere in a natural way. Madhu's editing is ok but there are few drags that slowed the pace of the film at times. Bheems music is good and he took the film to another level with his background music.

Production values are good. Dil Raju should be complemented by encouraging his younger generation to break away from the commercial entertainers and create a trend with a pathbreaking film like Balagam.

Balagam movie : Advantages

  • Story, Screenplay, Direction
  • Performances
  • Realistic flavor

Balagam movie : Disadvantages

  • Dragged Scenes

Balagam movie : Rating Analysis

Altogether, Balagam's film highlights the traditions, slang, and language of the Telangana region. More than the slang, the film directed by Venu Yeldandi and featuring Priyadarshi is powered by intense emotions. Veun Yeldandi took the viewers slowly into the real story by starting the narration in a hilarious way and then setting the stage to the high emotions stealing the hearts of all. Balagam reminds of the Kannada film Thithi which was released in 2015. Dialogues are impactful and thought-provoking and blended well with rich emotions. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 3 Rating for Balagam .

Balagam Review – Matti Katha

Balagam_Telugu_Movie_Review

OUR RATING 2.5/5

CENSOR ‘U’ Certified, 2h 11m.

What Is the Film About? Komurayya is an old man who goes about teasing everyone in his village. He dies all of a sudden one day. His two sons and daughter come to perform the customary rituals of the eleven days. But then, all three of them have their own problems to deal with each other. And there is Komurayya’s grandson, Sayeelu (Priyadarshi) who has another problem. The rest of the story is all about how the problems are resolved to give peace to Komurayya peace in heaven.

Performances Balagam is a Matti story as one can call. It is important to get the cast perfect for such films. Director Venu got it very well by picking apt artists for the characters. Except for Priyadarshi and Kavya, the rest of the characters do not have that film vibes and that is the best part of the casting.

Sudhakar Reddy who played Komurayya, Muralidhar Goud who played the son-in-law, Jayaram who played the elder brother, and Roopa Lakshmi who played the sister are all authentic and did their part very well.

Priyadarshi is good as well. He is adequate in the love stories and jovial portions. He did very well in the final emotional parts. Kavya is alright in whatever she got. The rest of the artists are all perfect for the roles they play.

Analysis Balagam feels like inspired by 2015 Kannada film, Thithi. The core point is the same but is beautifully woven with the native culture and traditions of interior Telangana. The film feels like a tribute to Telangana people by Dil Raju and director Venu who hail from the same region. Along with that, we also see the innocence, greed, beliefs (sometimes even superstitions), manipulation, problems, and many such aspects.

These are human things that we see in people everywhere, here it is about the things Venu saw in the countryside of Telangana . The film is authentic to that among all the films that came on Telangana subject so far at least in mainstream cinema. As said earlier, the cast is also carefully picked to enhance the impact.

Also, the more revolves around a death usually that is considered a taboo topic for Telugu people. Venu used to stir comedy and emotion as well. There is an inherent philosophy of how people display their true colors when a death happens.

Coming to the purely cinematic experience, there are some problems as well. The movie starts with Komurayya’s character which is so sweet but it is ended abruptly. Since it is the central character of the film, we should have seen some drama and more connection to the characters in the village for the later parts to feel more absorbing.

The struggles of Priyadarshi are funny here and there but the love stories do not make much of an impact. The first half is mostly about that. There are paces issues and the director moves to the core point only at the interval.

The second half is definitely more engaging the first half. The emotions take a driving seat here. Slow pace returns and creates considerable problems but then, we get to see some emotional sequences here and there. The climax again is neat and moving. The song that comes in the climax feels long but the second half of it which leads to realization in the family is very effective and leaves the audience with a heavy heart.

Finally, Balagam is an honest attempt that is authentic to Telangana culture and the rural side. There are problems that make it very difficult to sit throughout the film. But if you manage to do that, you will get impressed with the essence and the final ending.

Music and Other Departments? True to its subject, Balagam is completely shot in natural locations without any sets and properties. The cinematography is neat. They are able to explore the unknown side of the Telangana villages. Bheems Ceciroleo’s music is a big asset. The songs have the substance to engage in the proceedings and the background score is another plus.

Director Venu should be appreciated for picking such a subject and for being truthful to that. A little more work on the writing part can make it a well-crafted product. The movie run time is around 131 minutes but still feels long. Dil Raju’s name in the project helped to an extent.

Highlights? Authentic Telangana Culture Casting and Performances Bheems songs and music Neat Ending

Drawbacks? Slow pace Most of the first half Unengaging love tracks

Did I Enjoy It? Yes

Will You Recommend It? Yes, but remember it is not a regular film so have the right expectation

Cast & Crew

  • Priyadarshi (Hero)
  • Kavya Kalyan Ram (Heroine)
  • Sudhakar Reddy, Muralidhar Goud, Roopa (Cast)
  • Venu Yeldandi (Director)
  • Harshith Reddy, Hanshitha Reddy, Dil Raju (Producer)
  • Bheems Cicerolio (Music)
  • Acharya Venu (Cinematography)

Noted actor Venu Yeldandi turned director with a small film titled, Balagam. Bankrolled by Dil Raju, the film has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story: Set in a small village in Telangana, the film revolves around the death of an aged person named Komarayya. What kind of incidents happens in his family after Komarayya’s demise? How do ego clashes between the family members suffer the departed soul? What is the role of Komarayya’s grandson Sailu( Priyadarshi) in the entire setup, forms crucial crux.

Performances: All the artists who played the family members of Komarayya did their part perfectly. Their natural acting and dialogue delivery in Telangana delict adds a realistic texture to the entire film.

Even though Priyadarshi played the lead role, his character is just the other one in the film which can be termed as the best thing. Priyadarshi as an actor has once again proved himself with his emotional acting during the climax portions. Heroine Kavya Kalyanram is cute on-screen and her chemistry with Priyadarshi is showcased nicely. Her acting in a few episodes in the second half register well.

From the old man who played Komarayya’s character to director cum actor Venu Yeldandi everyone is impressive with their respective key roles.

Technicalities: The music composed by Bheems Ceciroleo is the soul of the film. While all the songs are situational, the two songs that come in the second half carry the mood of the film superbly. His background score is apt for the setup created.

Acharya Venu’s photography work is impressive. He presented the entire film and the village locations on a captivating note. The editing work is nice.

The production values for this limited-budget movie by Dil Raju’s daughter Hanshitha Reddy’s production house are good.

Analysis: Firstly, the actor-turned-director should be appreciated for coming up with a family-based story. His intention behind exploring the emotions and ego clashes between the family members is good and executed the same without any unwanted deviations. Venu as a director passed the litmus test with distinction for sure.

Even though Venu took the Telangana backdrop and showcased the rituals and activities being conducted in the region after a person’s demise, the content has a universal appeal. Apart from a couple of dragged scenes in the first half, his screenplay is gripping with an entertaining narrative. To summarize, Balagam is an emotionally charged village family story that has elements like situational comedy and striking performances for the artists. If promoted nicely, the film has chance to mint good revenues at the ticket windows this weekend.

Verdict: Highly recommended!

Rating: 3.5/5

Movie Review:  Balagam

Music :  Bheems Cicerolio  Release Date :  3rd March, 2023

Balagam Movie Review:  Priyadarshi, Kavya Kalyan Ram, Sudhakar Reddy, and others starrer Balagam has hit the theaters today. Let’s see the story of Balagam.

Story:  Sailu (Priyadarshi) gets ready for marriage. He incurs debts in the name of business and loses. He wants to settle the debts with the dowry money he will receive after marriage. But at the same time his grandfather Komuraiya (Sudhakar Reddy) dies unexpectedly. Sailu’s marriage is ruined by his death. How does Sailu pay off his debt? What is the reason for the quarrels between Komuraiya’s sons and daughters? How does he bring his  aunt’s family closer to his father? Why does the distance between the two families increase? How do they finally become one?  To get these answers, one should watch the movie Balagam on the silver screen.

 Plus points:

·         Performance

·         Sudhakar

·         Priyadarshi

·         Direction

·         Telangana accent

 Minus Points:

·         Few scenes boring

·         Slow narration

Performance:  Komuraiya’ role is only for the first fifteen minutes but the whole movie revolves around that character. Sudhakar does justice to the role of Komuraiah. And Jayaram, who plays the role of Ailaiah, shows his stubbornness, perseverance, anger and love all at the same level. Priyadarshi as Sailu makes us cry at the end. Kavya Kalyan Ram does not get much screen space to act. Muralidhar Goud, Vijayalakshmi, Rachcha Ravi, Krishna Tej are ok. Rest of the cast perform of Balagam accordingly.

Technical:  It is not common to make a film around death and show all kinds of emotions in it. As a director, Venu Yeldandi succeeded in giving the message he wanted to convey around death. He has shown Telangana accent and life style well on screen.  The music, songs and the Cinematography is good.  The songs are also in Telangana style which is a plus point. At the time of death, the violence in the villages has been shown realistically. The scenes and dialogues why the crow does not touch Komuraiya are mind-blowing.  All the departments like editing and art department are done well. The production values are good.

Analysis:  In the past, there have been many movies in Telugu with stories of misconceptions and misunderstandings between family members and the hero solving them. Even though the core point of Balagam is the same, director Venu Yeldandi  showed diversity in the first film by directing this film. He brought out comedy, sentiment and all kinds of emotions well.  But there will be no big twists in this movie. It goes on slowly. Some may find this movie boring. But it is connected with Telangana nativity.  Coming to the second half, the story gets a bit more serious. Venu Yeldandi continues to show the emotions of passions, passions, hates and loves in the film.

The movie Balagam based on Telangana dialect, language and culture.

'Kartam Bhugtam' Review: Shreyas Talpade, Vijay Raaz pull this thriller through

Director soham shah's 'kartam bhugtam', starring shreyas talpade and vijay raaz, is a psychological thriller. with a predictable story, the film has some shortcomings. read our review..

A poster of 'Kartam Bhugtam'

  • 'Kartam Bhugtam' released in theatres on May 17
  • Directed by Soham Shah, the film features Shreyas Talpade and Vijay in lead roles
  • The film is let down by predictable storyline despite great performances from the lead actors

Release Date: 17 May, 2024

There's a scene in 'Kartam Bhugtam' where a character is waiting to catch the latest episode of 'Crime Patrol'. If you are a fan of shows like that or 'Savdhaan India', the latest release will be quite a predictable offering for you. With an old-school storyline and treatment, it will make you reminisce about those satellite films you watched during the summer in the 90s. While the film falters in maintaining consistent engagement and surprises, the performances of Shreyas Talpade and Vijay Raaz make it a watchable experience.

Directed by 'Kaal' and 'Luck' fame Soham Shah, the thriller with a backdrop of astrology and superstition, also stars Madhoo and Aksha Pardasany. It revolves around an NRI Dev (Talpade), who comes back from New Zealand to sell off his father's property. While trotting around the city with his childhood friend, he meets an astrologer, Anna (Vijay Raaz), and gets completely beguiled by him. Anna not only helps Dev sort out his property woes but entangles him in his world and even makes him part of his family. His wife (Madhoo) treats him like a son and son Sameer sees an elder brother in him.

The way Dev starts trusting Anna blindly and following his instructions - some absurd ones - leaves you quite uncomfortable. Be it a scene where he aggressively forces the bank official to give him a bank account number with a total of seven or running through stores to find a shirt in a particular shade is bizarre.

It also makes you sigh at how a human brain can be manipulated out of plain fear. The film beautifully highlights how vulnerability seeks relief in odd places and clutches at the smallest hint of hope. Dev represents the aam janta , who put their beliefs in godmen, saints, or astrologers and consider them their only means to triumph.

As already mentioned, Shreyas Talpade and Vijay Raaz carry the film on their shoulders and manage to hold your attention. Both of them get to tap on a very different avatar after the interval, where the real fun begins (not sharing spoilers). While Madhoo also gets to perform two varied personalities, it doesn't have as much impact as we expected. However, it's heartening to see her back on screen, and we hope makers give her better roles. Aksha Pardasany, who stood out in 'Jamtara', is sincere in what her role demands.

Soham Shah shone as a filmmaker with his last two nail-biting dramas, but 'Kartam Bhugtam' is a shaky delivery. There are moments when you start getting involved in the plot, but it fails to hold you for too long. The twists and turns are fairly designed but are too predictable for you to enjoy. Films in this genre should either end with you chuckling or being frozen in your seats in shock, but the climax here fails to evoke any strong emotions.

The music is quite forgettable and none of the songs have been designed well. The title track is quite haunting, and not in a good sense, with the same line ' kartam bhugtam ' being played in loops. Also, the background music is too loud at some moments, especially when Vijay Raaz is up to his sorcery. It's an old-school belief that these scary sounds will invoke mystery or fear amongst audiences. However, times have changed and subtlety is the keyword. The messaging of karma or 'what you sow is what you get' or 'what goes around comes around' is also rubbed on the face multiple times, and even in multiple languages.

That said, 'Kartam Bhugtam' would probably find more takers on the satellite than in theatres or OTT.

2.5 out of 5 stars for 'Kartam Bhugtam'. Published By: K Janani Published On: May 17, 2024 ALSO READ | Director Soham Shah: Imran Khan was not a great choice as action hero for 'Luck'
