Driving Maneuvers
Standard Car Reference Points for Driving: Curb & Parallel Parking, Backing
One of your biggest challenges as a new driver will be learning to identify where your vehicle sits in relation to the roadway. Developing this sense is essential, as it will make sure you can correctly position yourself within a lane and avoid colliding with the curb, other vehicles and obstacles. Correctly estimating your vehicle’s location is extremely hard, as your view from the driver’s seat will be impeded by the hood, dashboard and trunk. Reference points are the key to positioning and maneuvering your car accurately. Master these visual guides and challenging maneuvers like parallel parking will soon be a walk in the park.
Left headlight
Center of the hood, reference points for the “stop” line, rear end of the vehicle, how can curb reference points help you.
When learning about car reference points it is important to remember that standard reference points are only ever approximations. Vehicles come in all shapes and sizes and as such, will have slightly different optimal reference points. Your car may be longer, shorter or wider than the vehicle used in these examples. Keep this in mind and adjust your reference points as necessary while practicing driving maneuvers . If the reference points are different, it is likely they will only be slightly off the mark.
Side position reference points
Side position reference points are used to locate a vehicle in relation to side-adjacent road markings and obstacles, like the curb or another parked car. These points of reference will help whenever you are trying to park or position yourself within a lane .
Your vehicle’s left headlight makes for an excellent reference point when attempting to park on the left side of the road. Take advantage of this reference point by imagining a line through the point where the left fender meets the hood. This point should line up with adjacent lane markings or the curb when you are three to six inches away, which is the distance you should aim for when parking or assuming lane position two.
To summarize, your left headlight should be used for reference when you need to do any of the following:
- Park next to the curb on the left side of the roadway
- Position the vehicle in preparation for a left turn
- Drive in lane position two
When positioning yourself in relation to the right curb, use the center of your hood as a point of reference. This should allow you to maneuver very close to the right curb without hitting it. Generally, when the curb appears to intersect the middle of the hood from your viewpoint in the driver’s seat, your vehicle is in the ideal position, three to six inches away from it.
The center of the hood should be your reference point when trying to:
- Park the vehicle on the right side of the roadway
- Position the vehicle in preparation for a right turn
- Drive in lane position three
You must be able to determine how close the front of your vehicle is to a stop line, once the line itself has been obscured by the hood. Drivers must stop as near to the line as possible, without the front bumper or any other part of the vehicle actually going over the line. Your side-view mirrors provide the best reference points to use in this situation. The image shows how a stop line would look in relation to your left side-view mirror, when your vehicle stops just before the line.
Here is how the stop line would look beside your right side-view mirror when the vehicle has stopped just before the line. If you are standing in the right lane, the stop line will not be visible from the right side window.
When it comes to reversing and parallel parking , you must know the rear limit of your vehicle. Looking through your rear-view and side-view mirrors alone will not be enough to position your car correctly. Drivers must look over their left and right shoulders through the side windows to position their vehicle in relation to the curb line when parallel parking.
The image shows the curb line when the vehicle’s rear-end is positioned beside the curb, and the driver is looking over their left shoulder. In this situation, the door handle makes an appropriate reference point.
This image demonstrates what the curb line would look like through the side window, when the vehicle’s rear end is aligned with the curb and the driver is looking over their right shoulder.
If – after reading this article – you are still wondering why so much emphasis is placed on car reference points in the driver’s ed program, consider these final points:
Understanding car reference points will help you get in and out of very tight parking spots . This skill will come in handy if you live or work in a busy urban area.
Knowledge of basic reference points will help you identify workable reference points in any vehicle you drive in the future. So, you will always feel comfortable and confident behind the wheel.
Parallel parking is a nightmare for new and experienced drivers alike. With car reference points to guide you, parallel parking will never be a problem.
You will be able to share the road with cyclists safely and confidently, as car reference points will show you exactly which lane position you are occupying and how far away you are from nearby bicycles.

Pre-Drive Checklist
Drivers should never underestimate the importance of the pre-drive checklist. Looking behind the vehicle to make sure there are no children and animals there, making sure your seat belt is on, adjusting your seat and mirrors, making sure the windshield is clean - you have to go through all these things every time before you start driving.
Steering Techniques
Getting to grips with the various possible steering techniques begins with learning to position your hands on the steering wheel appropriately for the immediate driving situation and learning and practicing several different steering methods. These include the “hand to hand” technique (pull-push steering) and the “hand over hand” technique.
Backing Up a Car
Alongside parallel parking, backing up is one of the most dreaded maneuvers in the practical driving exam. Drivers must operate the steering wheel and pedals situated in front of them, while looking back to position the vehicle and check for obstacles. With enough practice it will become just as effortless as driving forward.
T Intersections
T-intersection is a three-way junction where three roads come together. Just like with any other intersection, you must exercise caution when approaching it and you should slow down and watch out for other traffic and pedestrians even if you are traveling on the through road and have the right-of-way.
Highway Interchanges
An interchange is the intersection of two highways at different levels with separate connecting roads for the transfer of traffic from one highway to the other through a series of ramps. The connecting ramps allow drivers to leave on road and enter another safely, without impeding the flow of traffic.
When it comes to practical driving maneuvers like steering, backing-up and signaling, the bulk of your learning will be carried out behind-the-wheel; there can be no substitute for actually getting out there and putting these skills into practice. However, getting to grips with essential driving maneuvers does require an academic approach, before you hop into the driver’s seat.
Before You Start Driving
When it comes to positioning your car, steering, backing up and communicating with other road users, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about things. It is important to learn the correct maneuvering rules and methods from the start of your learning journey, otherwise you may develop bad habits which are hard to fix later.
Lane Positioning
It may surprise you to find out that lane positioning is not just a concern for motorcyclists and cyclists. Car drivers must also learn how to position themselves within a lane appropriately. It is not simply a matter of remaining centered in your lane or as many drivers assume, keeping to the right. Different driving situations demand different lane positions.
Vehicle's Operating Space
Learning to manage the space around your vehicle effectively will help to improve safety and limit the chances of a collision occurring. The area immediately around your vehicle is referred to as the “vehicle operating space”. This space consists of seven “zones”, each of which is as wide as a lane and extends as far as the driver can see in that direction.

This is the only place I can truly heal from within, no matter what my challenge has been. Grateful.
The Reference Point staff has always been incredibly sweet whenever I go visit them. I originally had gone to them when my anxiety was off the roof. I was prescribed anti-anxiety medicine at the hospital. After how I felt with taking my first dose at home, I knew I had to do something else that seem more "natural" to help me manage my anxiety. I obviously change some habits i.e no caffeine but I knew I needed something else to help. So I decided to come to the Reference Point for some supplements. I went through a treatment with them that was also going to help me with my thyroid disorder. After completing my treatment, I could say I was able to manage my anxiety better. In reference to my thyroid disorder though, I know I had to continue with it in order to get results towards that. I still keep going to them to buy the supplements that help me with my anxiety. If you are looking for a more holistic approach to any health issues, I say give the Reference Point a try. The supplements are expensive but you can tell them directly what is your budget and they will recommend which supplements are best to buy at the time of purchase. The location is a bit hidden as it's in a small plaza with other business surrounding it. I recently visited them a few months ago and just so you can know the practitioner Anankha is not working in the office anymore. You would have a Skype call with her and then her staff would help you with the supplements.
I have been working with The Reference Point for two years and I'm a new person. My blood pressure is now normal and I am on zero medications. My weight is normal and I have no hormonal imbalances. It's not a short adventure to return to good health but you are worth an investment in yourself. Also great are the free monthly lectures on health related topics. If you do just one thing, eat organic!
I went to Anankha years ago. While the center is very calm and nice, I will be dead honest about my review. It was my first time going into a natural practitioner's office and I was unimpressed. She spent the entire time talking about herself and didn't take much of my history, it felt like she wasn't listening. The meeting was very cursory. That's not even what causes me to write a poor review. So, I went in, got her tests, and bought about $400 worth of supplements (as a college student, hoping to improve my minor health issues). I go on her protocol and within 3 days get the worst herxheimer (detox) reaction one can imagine. I was in the bed with a fever and chills and truly felt like I got hit by a bus. I could barely move. I called Anankha's office and the assistant said Anankha would not be able to speak with me and that they'd never heard of such a reaction and to just reduce the dose by half. What??! Had she no care for what the supplements had done to me?? These were strong herbs I was taking and clearly they were having an overload toll on my body. What shocked me the most is that Anankha (the supposed practitioner who was helping me heal) never even called to check up or ask. I tried calling multiple times and she was always unavailable. I think they wanted more money by having me come in and pay $$$ for another appt, instead of the ethical duty to ask me my symptoms and give me advice. I was doing that on the phone with an admin assistant. So unprofessional and wrong. I immediately stopped the protocol, of course. All my family and friends were worried. Anankha has life experience but what are her professional credentials? She is not a doctor and nor did she act like a caring healer after the severe reaction I had to the supplements she prescribed me. I went back and returned the unopened supplements, of course barely getting any of my money back and having had $300 down the drain already. I was very honest about my experience and truly disappointed. I urge people to go here only if they have another trained professional, who is accessible and caring about your health, to fall back on if there are strong reactions from the herbs she gives you. I'm not saying she hasn't helped people but clearly I was the first her admin assistant had heard of to have such a strong reaction, and yet Anankha didn't even have the care to call me directly and make sure I was OK? Forget care, what about ethics and legal liabilities? Beware when going here.
First of all, like the other reviewers pointed out the team at the Reference Point is incredibly sweet and compassionate. Its just a treat to be around such wonderful human beings - makes you wish the world were an extension of this place! So now to the question - does it work? I will say you have to suspend judgment and just see if there are results (I'm an ex-researcher so while the science used at this center seemed weird, I decided to remain open minded and give it a shot). I came to the Reference Point with 2 problems: 1) a chronic digestive issues that 3 different Western doctors and 2 naturopaths had been unable to rectify or explain after many invasive tests and 2) an infertility issue. After 2-3 months of seeing Ananka, for the first time in 30 years my chronic digestive issue were solved with supplements. That in itself made everything worthwhile. Unfortunately I still have unexplained infertility - but having 1 out of 2 serious issues solved is still a miracle in my books. Thanks Ananka! and many thanks to your team for the little miracles you provide each and every day!
After going to doctors for many years I am so grateful to God for sending me a friend who told me about The Reference point. I have been a client of theirs for many years now. I am a hairstylist and have sent them many of my clients with health problems that their doctors could not cure. I hear many testimonies of the cures they have done on my clients. I am 51 years old and have no ailments thanks to The Reference point. If you become their client you of course have to change your way of eating. You have to do exactly what they say to do and for as long as they say or it wont work. Some people don't follow what they have prescribed for them and it wont work that way. Yes it is costly but your health is worth it. I think I look younger because of the way I eat and live thanks to Ananka and girls at The Reference Point
Both the receptionist and naturopath are really really nice. I thought the tests were kind of shady. I had to give out a full explanation of my symptoms and history and I think the spit test was just based off of that...You have to take too many supplements and herbs and stuff, and if they make your problem worse or don't work, you of course have to take more. I think the naturopath got sick of all my emails (they're free...) so she started recommending I come in...for what? so we could talk about the same thing person to person? I don't think so... Plus her recommendations were totally opposite of the majority of recommendations out there for my problem...But I have heard many success stories with her so give it a try, it might work for you and they are really nice and sweet :)
My experience with The Reference Point has been great! I knew what I wanted and Anankha and her staff put together a program to make it happen. I didn't know there are so many ways to clear physical, emotional and mental disturbances! These folks are experts! I felt very welcome, cared for and would highly recommend the services of Anankha and The Reference Point to anyone seeking freedom from suffering of any sort. I have just completed a program with them and completely achieved my goal. Over the last 3 years that I have known them, they always seem to have an answer for whatever ails me, which is the way I like it! I have Questions, they have Answers.
I was at first impressed with the promise that Ananhka could diagnose infections & deficiencies by simply having her computer read the vibrations in your hand. It all made sense to me since I've done muscle testing before. I purchased most of the supplements she recommended. Not only did none of them help, they actually made things much worse. After seeing some of her supplements cause problems, I took them all to another practitioner (N.A.E.T). The N.A.E.T practitioneer tested them all & found that everyone of Ananhka's supplements was bad. Since I didn't buy everything she reccomended, I only wasted about $400.
It is important to note that I am a returnee to the Reference Point. Back in the 90's, myself and a few friends went there and all of us felt better and started losing weight as a side affect of taking better care of ourselves. Over time, we drifted away, some to other states. This year after some joint replacements and discovery of a heart aneurysm, at age 71,with extensive weight gain, my granddaughter, who is a client at the Reference Point, suggested that I go back. When their test revealed, among other issues, that I had metal toxicity, I, thinking I knew better, denied that as a possibility. A few months later, my Ortho doctor discovered that I had a faulty metal hip joint that had been recalled in 2010 and that the result was that the inoperable faulty metal joint was causing metal toxicity in my system. So much for my "know it all" original response. I have now been taking the remedies from the Reference Point and am feeling so much better. Additionally, I am sleeping better and my stamina and energy have improved. There is even a plan to work on my weight control. My granddaughter has been going there for months before I did my return visit and she feels better than she has ever felt . Being a strong example of health improvement, she has brought friends and other family members to the Reference Point, who have all improved with their health issues. Western medicine has its place, but helping the body heal and strengthen itself from the inside out, does more than just treat symptoms. It isn't a quick, overnight success. It takes commitment and focus.
