Fees and funding

Money is the single biggest barrier to people undertaking postgraduate study, and securing funding for your PhD is vital to realising your ambitions.

These pages will help you estimate how much studying for a postgraduate degree will cost, explain how to search for scholarships, studentships, bursaries and other awards you might be eligible for, and introduce a number of alternative ideas that can help you fund your postgraduate studies.

Specific fees are listed in every programme entry under the 'Finance' tab. You can find out more about our fee structure and your fee status on   our fees page .

As a member of the Russell Group, we attract funding to support postgraduate study and research from all major research councils through a number of high profile   Funded centres , and via a multitude of philanthropic sources, as well as investing heavily ourselves.

You can find out more on our specific   PhD funding page.   Our Alternative funding page   offers more ideas for how to help fund your postgraduate research degree, at any level of study.

Funding database

You can also search for funding via our   funding database   - which contains details of every single PhD studentship we offer, as well as numerous bursaries and non-academic scholarships.

How much will it cost

Whether you're studying for a Masters or researching for a PhD, your tuition fee is only one part of the cost of doing a postgraduate degree: you also have to consider accommodation and living costs.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees vary for Home/EU students and International students. Our general  research degrees fees page  will help you determine which apply to you.

Research degree tuition fees vary across different disciplines, so please refer to Finance tabs on the relevant degree page to confirm exact costs.

Accommodation costs will vary depending on whether you live in private or University-owned accommodation. More details regarding accommodation, including costs, are available on our  accommodation page .

Living costs

The National Union of Students estimates student living costs, including accommodation, to be  approximately £12,000 per year  outside London.

Living costs are, to some extent, up to you. You will need to make choices about how you live and what your priorities are, but make sure you factor in:

  • food and toiletries
  • clothes and laundry
  • mobile / telephone / internet charges
  • Visa fees (for international students)
  • Council Tax (part-time students are eligible to pay)
  • travel costs, particularly if you want to visit home in vacations
  • books and other course materials
  • leisure, sport and entertainment
  • sundries, such as haircuts, prescriptions etc.

You might find the   Which Student Budget Calculator  useful in planning your budget.

International students

International students may incur additional costs - please see our   visa webpage   for more details.

Financial support and advice

Student finance is different for everyone, and can be complicated. If you have any questions, please contact our  Student Information Desk (SID) .

Funding hints and tips

There are several things to consider when you're starting to look for funding for your postgraduate degree.

Start early and think outside of the box

If you have an inkling that you might want to do a postgraduate degree, then you can start planning and saving right from the off. Wages from weekend or summer jobs, siphoning off small chunks of your undergraduate student loan, and any other small bits of long-term saving you can do will really help, especially if you put this money somewhere sensible where it will grow and where you can’t give in to temptation and spend it on a whim. Many PhD students can also take advantage of studying on a part-time basis in order to work alongside your research. See our   degree durations   page for more information.

Talk to your supervisor

If you're applying to do a PhD, it's worthwhile talking to your potential supervisor about funding early on. Many academics have access to funds from multiple sources that can be diverted to provide a bespoke studentship for the right candidate. These types of opportunities are rarely promoted as they're not standard studentships from research councils. Academics may also know about other potential routes to funding only promoted via specific academic networks.

Sell yourself in applications

When applying for funding remember that awards are competitive, and sell yourself accordingly; tell the funding body or institution why you deserve this money more than the next applicant and what you plan to do with your postgraduate qualification when they’ve helped you pay for it.

Think small as well as big

Don’t just look for big, eye-catching scholarships; everyone else will be chasing these too, and you can normally only hold one scholarship from a university or Research Council, which is where most large awards come from. There are hundreds of small, often very local charities that specialise in providing small grants – maybe £500 – for educational purposes, and you can hold as many of these as you can apply for and successfully be awarded. Receiving a handful of small awards like this can quickly take a sizeable chunk off your tuition fees.

There are more ideas about how to pay for your postgraduate degree on our   alternative funding page .

Making your money go further

Be clever with textbooks

Undergraduate students can only borrow 15 items from the University library system, but PhD students and other postgraduate researchers can borrow 40, meaning you can avoid buying every text book and piece of further reading. eBooks can help further still.

Selling your old textbooks if you don’t need them anymore can also make you a surprising amount of money, especially if they’re in good condition and still current editions.

Live sensibly

A more mature approach to shared living can really help a postgraduate student house save money; planning food shops together and batch cooking so you can freeze meals in advance is much more economical. Taking a packed lunch to campus might make you feel like you're at school again, but will save you money.

Work on campus

Universities usually offer plenty of flexible and part-time work that can fit itself around postgraduate study, especially if you’re studying part-time. This might be teaching undergraduates if you’re working towards a PhD, or it could be working in a customer service or admin role, for instance as a student ambassador.

Travel sensibly

If you have to travel to campus then minimise the amount of journeys you make by coordinating campus-based activities to be on the same day. Or think about getting a bicycle if it’s not too far.

Remember you're still a student

Don’t forget student discount; many retailers offer this, and you’re still eligible as a postgraduate.

The University of Exeter offers a world-class education and research in one of the most beautiful locations in the UK. As a Russell Group University our research makes a difference across the world and we’re committed to working with our PhD researchers to make the world greener, healthier, and fairer.  Our   Doctoral College  stimulates, supports and sustains a vibrant research and intellectual environment across and between disciplines for postgraduate and early career researchers. Focusing on investment and development in training, resources and facilities, we provide an outstanding quality experience for those in the early stages of their research careers.

The EPSRC is the main funding body for engineering and physical sciences research in the UK. The  EPSRC’s portfolio  ranges from digital technologies to clean energy, manufacturing to mathematics, advanced materials to chemistry.

This application process for this scheme is  student-centred , where you are asked to contact a member of academic staff with relevant expertise and appropriate track record of EPSRC-facing research.  The deadline for us to receive your application is 19th February 2024 however you will need to contact your potential supervisor and together write a short proposal – you are strongly advised to allow sufficient time to do this.   Our research priorities for these studentships are based around those identified by the funder (EPSRC), however we particularly encourage applications for mulltidiciplinary projects, and those that have the potential to align with industry or other external organisations.

Award details

Training and performance in the security sector – phd (funded) ref: 5098, about the award, supervisors.

Prof Sam Vine (University of Exeter) Prof Mark Wilson (University of Exeter) Dr Leanne Simpson (Smiths Detection)

Location: Public Health and Sports Sciences, St Luke’s Campus, Exeter, UK

The University of Exeter’s Department of Public Health and Sports Sciences is inviting applications for a PhD studentship fully-funded by their research partners Smiths Detection (https://www.smithsdetection.com/) a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies. The PhD will commence in September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.  For eligible students the studentship will cover Home tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend of at least £19,237 for 4 years full-time, or pro rata for part-time study.

Project Description

The project is focused on a new virtual training system being developed by Smiths Detection, which will train the cognitive, perceptual and procedural skills needed to operate x-ray equipment used to screen baggage and cargo. As such the PhD project is being set up to answer important questions about how the training system supports learning, and how subsequent performance in the real-world is affected ,and how trainees acquire the perceptual skills needed to interpret the x-ray images produced by the x-ray equipment. In terms of discipline, the work will be a combination of Psychology, Human factors, and Pedagogy.

The successful applicants will be based within the Virtual Immersive Training and Learning (VITAL) research team, within the department of Public Health and Sports Sciences.

The project will examine the efficacy of a new training system; the role of various features in supporting performance and training; and the optimisation of training delivery (including novel concepts related to the delivery of feedback; and the automatic creation of trainee oriented courses). The PhD students will develop new skills in measuring psycho-physiological indices of cognition and emotion (e.g., eye movements); analysing large data sets (from video and databases); and general data science skills for analysing data sets. Data will include those generated in experimental trials and those collected by the company from the device in use. As such postgraduate level qualifications and skills in either research methods, psychology, or data science are required (e.g., an MSc or equivalent in psychological research methods).

This award provides annual funding to cover Home tuition fees and a tax-free stipend.  For students who pay Home tuition fees the award will cover the tuition fees in full, plus at least £19,237 per year tax-free stipend. Students who pay international tuition fees are eligible to apply, but should note that the award will only provide payment for part of the international tuition fee (~£24k pa) and no stipend.

International applicants need to be aware that you will have to cover the cost of your student visa, healthcare surcharge and other costs of moving to the UK to do a PhD.

The collaboration involves a project partner who is providing funding, this means there are special terms that apply to the project, these will be discussed with Candidates at Interview and fully set out in the offer letter. Full details will be confirmed at offer stage.

The conditions for eligibility of home fees status are complex and you will need to seek advice if you have moved to or from the UK (or Republic of Ireland) within the past 3 years or have applied for settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.

As this project is positioned within the security sector, security clearances will be required. In order to apply for this, you will need to be in the UK with no restriction on your ability to be in the UK (i.e., not dependent on a visa).

Entry requirements

Applicants for this studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science or technology. A drivers license and the ability to drive within the UK will be advantageous.

If English is not your first language you will need to meet the required level (Profile B) as per our guidance at https://www.exeter.ac.uk/pg-research/apply/english/

How to apply

In the application process you will be asked to upload several documents: • CV • Letter of application (outlining your academic interests, prior research experience and reasons for wishing to undertake the project). • Names of two referees familiar with your academic work. You are not required to obtain references yourself. We will request references directly from your referees if you are shortlisted. • If you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country you will need to submit evidence of your proficiency in English. The closing date for applications is midnight on Tuesday 30th April 2024 . Interviews will be held on the University of Exeter St Luke’s Campus, or online, date TBC

If you have any general enquiries about the application process please email [email protected] or phone 0300 555 60 60 (UK callers) +44 (0) 1392 723044 (EU/International callers)  Project-specific queries should be directed to the main supervisor Prof Sam Vine ([email protected]).

Call for applications – beaming the british empire: the imperial wireless chain, c. 1900-1940: ahrc-funded collaborative doctoral award, ahrc-funded collaborative doctoral award with the university of exeter and bt archives, beaming the british empire: the imperial wireless chain, circa 1900-1940.

Applications are invited for an AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Award with the University of Exeter and BT Archives to research and study the origins, development and impact of the Imperial Wireless Chain, the global network of shortwave radio stations that reputedly played a critical role in British colonial integrity from the 1920s to the 1940s.

This project focuses on one of the most extraordinary milestones in the history of global telecommunications and represents an exciting opportunity for students with backgrounds in the history of science, technology, and modern British and imperial history.  First conceived by Guglielmo Marconi in 1906 to use long-wave transmitters, the Imperial Wireless Chain (IWC) was postponed following a political scandal and the outbreak of the First World War.    In the early 1920s, and at some financial risk, the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company developed its innovative ‘beam’ short-wave system and this was eventually adopted by the British government for the IWC.  The first pair of ‘beam’ stations opened in Britain and Canada in 1927 and within a few years similar stations followed in Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa and South America.  It soon became one of the most widely used forms of long distance communication in the British empire and posed such a threat to the ageing submarine cable business that had constituted the ‘nervous system’ of the British empire that the British government was eventually forced to amalgamate the newer and older forms of telegraphy into one of the largest telecommunication firms of the 1930s: Cable and Wireless.  Despite its importance, the history of the Imperial Wireless Chain has not been the subjects of systematic scholarly study.
