Not every umpire on wildcard round moves on, if you’re newer and it’s your first postseason, you prob start with just wildcard round.

So someone has to take their place. There are umpires who will work the next series not on these and vice versa, so he prob will be on next round.

Or….the 3 balks doomed him 🤷‍♂️

supposedly he is in the DS (per CCS article After Pandemic Halts History, Lisa Turbitt Takes WBC Field   comment section) and he would be eligible for a WS, especially since he has worked an LCS in 2020. who knows what will happen. and all WS umpires will come from those working the DS. they are notified of a WS the day after the very last DS game. heck, they may get a call on the plane flight on their way home the next day.

MLB reveals umpire assignments for wild-card, divisional rounds

Here are the umpiring crews for the wild-card and divisional round playoff games..

CB Bucknor is working an ALDS. Expect some confrontations.

Major League Baseball announced umpiring assignments for the wild-card and divisional playoff rounds Monday. Here they are:

Reds - Pirates wild-card game: Joe West (home plate), Dale Scott, Dan Iassogna, Rob Drake, Tim Timmons and Lance Barksdale.

Rays Texas Rangers - Indians wild-card game: Gerry Davis (home plate), Ted Barrett, Mike Everitt, Greg Gibson, Phil Cuzzi and Brian Knight.

Reds/Pirates- Cardinals NLDS: Jerry Layne (crew chief), Wally Bell, Sam Holbrook, Jim Joyce, Paul Nauert and Tony Randazzo.

Dodgers - Braves NLDS: John Hirschbeck (crew chief), Laz Diaz, Marvin Hudson, Bill Miller, Tim Welke and Hunter Wendelstedt.

Rays/Indians- Red Sox ALDS: Dana DeMuth (crew chief), Eric Cooper, Paul Emmel, Chris Guccione, Larry Vanover and Mike Winters.

Tigers - Athletics ALDS: Gary Darling (crew chief), CB Bucknor, Mike DiMuro, Tom Hallion, Jim Reynolds and Mark Wegner.

I'm not going to nitpick these selections, but I can't believe Bucknor got an assignment. I feel like you could poll players, managers, coaches, front office personnel, media, fans, etc. and the answer would always be the same: Bucknor is generally regarded as the worst umpire in Major League Baseball. It's hard to trust the evaluation process if he's getting a postseason series.

On the bright side, he's doing the Tigers series. An epic Jim Leyland meltdown could be on the menu.

After rough Wild Card Series ball/strike calls, higher-rated umpires up for Division Series games

Author Photo

The very first game of the 2022 postseason, with the Guardians hosting the Rays, was seen by many as Exhibit A as to why baseball needs “robot umpires” calling balls and strikes.

Doug Eddings, a veteran umpire who made his MLB debut way back in 1998, did not have his finest day calling balls and strikes. According to Ump Scorecards, the website/Twitter account that tracks umpire performance, Eddings missed 12 of the 108 ball/strike calls in the game, won by Cleveland. To put it another way, Eddings got 11.1 percent of the calls wrong. According to Umpire Auditor, another tracker of umpire performance, Eddings missed 18 calls, or 17.3 percent.

That’s … not what you want in a tightly contested playoff game after a 162-game regular season. Check out the visualization.

Umpire: Doug Eddings Final: Rays 1, Guardians 2 #RaysUp // #ForTheLand #TBvsCLE // #CLEvsTB #Postseason More stats for this game 👇 https://t.co/T7hhyRQYuG pic.twitter.com/Xr1DwGQpbx — Umpire Scorecards (@UmpScorecards) October 8, 2022

I remember seeing that tweet pop up on my timeline as I was sitting in the press box during the Phillies-Cardinals game in St. Louis. The accuracy number under 90 percent might as well have been accompanied by flashing lights and blaring alarms.

We’re not here to talk about robot umpires today, but instead, to take a look at the umpires who have been given ball/strike duties so far in the postseason. The question is this: Should we be shocked that Eddings’ ball/strike accuracy was so low?

On the Ump Scorecard website, you can search each individual umpire’s performance — here’s the explanation of the methods and research the site uses — and a quick sorting of the Accuracy column shows that Eddings ranked No. 84 among the 96 umpires who worked at least one game behind home plate during the 2022 season, with an accuracy of 92.4 percent. Via Umpire Auditor, Eddings ranked 80th of 92 qualified umpires, with a correct call rate of 90.8 percent.

Baseball fans, it seems, should not have been surprised at a bunch of missed calls.

It’s important to point out that MLB uses its own set of umpire ratings, as collectively bargained with the MLB Umpires Association, and those are what MLB uses as a guide to choose postseason umpire assignments. Those numbers are not readily publicly available, which is why Ump Scorecards and Umpire Auditor and others have become a popular resource. It’s also worth noting that, as this informative ESPN article tells us, MLB’s official system gives umpires a 2-inch buffer around the actual strike zone . So that infamous Angel Hernandez game earlier this season — remember Kyle Schwarber getting kicked out? — produced a score of 85.3 percent with Umpire Auditor, but 96.1 by MLB’s grading system.

Umpire Angel Hernandez was the lowest rated umpire on the day, missing 19 calls for a correct percentage of 85.3%. He rang up 6 batters on pitches that were outside the zone and called a strike to Jean Segura that missed inside by a season high 6.47 inches. #Brewers #Phillies pic.twitter.com/pmmt1ELJJ6 — Umpire Auditor (@UmpireAuditor) April 25, 2022

It’s quite the difference. But, like the whole “robot umpires” thing, that’s not the rabbit hole we’re diving down today. First, let’s look at all the Wild Card umpire performances, using Ump Scorecards accuracy data. Five of the nine umpires who worked a Wild Card game were ranked No. 54 or lower of the 96 umpires who called at least one game behind the plate.

Rays at Guardians Game 1: Doug Eddings. No. 84 in Accuracy, 92.5 (28 games) Wild Card Accuracy: 88.9 (96 of 108) Game 2: Adam Hamari. No. 4, 94.9 (32 games) Wild Card Accuracy: 96.6 (197 of 204)

Mariners at Blue Jays Game 1: Lance Barrett. No. 79 (tie), 92.8 (30 games) Wild Card Accuracy: 90.3 (102 of 113) Game 2: Todd Tichenor. No. 29 (tie), 94.2 (26 games) Wild Card Accuracy: 94.7 (160 of 169)

Phillies at Cardinals Game 1: D.J. Reyburn. No. 71 (tie), 93.2 (29 games) Wild Card Accuracy: 92.7 (166 of 179) Game 2: Vic Carpazza. No. 29 (tie), 94.2 (30 games) Wild Card Accuracy: 97.2 (139 of 143)

Padres at Mets Game 1: Adrian Johnson. No. 74 (tie), 93.1 (31 games) Wild Card Accuracy: 94.4 (132 of 139) Game 2: Chris Guccione. No. 43 (tie), 94.0 (30 games) Wild Card Accuracy: 96.1 percent (197 of 205) Game 3: Chris Conroy. No. 54 (tie), 93.6 (31 games) Wild Card Accuracy: 96.2 (127 of 132)

This shouldn’t be surprising; the four umpires ranked 43rd or better — Hamari, Tiechnor, Carpazza and Guccione — had an accuracy percentage of 96.1 (693 of 721), while the four ranked 54th or worse — Eddings, Barrett, Reyburn, Johnson and Conroy — checked in at 92.9 percent (623 of 671).

So by now I know what you’re probably wondering: What about the Division Series round that starts today? Here are the Games 1 and 2 home-plate assignments for each series, with the Accuracy ranking from Ump Scorecards.

Seattle vs. Houston Game 1: Pat Hoberg. No. 2 in Accuracy, 95.5 (29 games) Game 2: Jansen Visconti. No. 21, 94.4 (30 games)

Guardians vs. Yankees Game 1: Jordan Baker. No. 22 (tie), 94.3 (32 games) Game 2: Jeremie Rehak. No. 1, 95.5 (26 games)

Padres vs. Dodgers Game 1: Tripp Gibson. No. 3, 95.0 (31 games) Game 2: Chris Segal. No. 46, 93.9 (33 games)

Phillies vs. Braves Game 1: David Rackley. No. 5 (tie), 94.8 (28 games) Game 2: Nic Lentz. No. 17 (tie), 94.5 (31 games)

MORE: MLB Division Series betting guide

That lineup is significantly better, with the top three umpires in regular-season accuracy — Rehak, Hoberg and Gibson — and only one out of the tpo 25. And maybe that’s how it should be, with the better umpires getting the more important games.

Two umpires fans love to complain about, Angel Hernandez and C.B. Bucknor, are not in the Division Series rotation. MLB has not revealed the LCS or World Series umpire assignments yet.

Back in July Angel Hernandez filed a discrimination lawsuit against Major League Baseball claiming that he was passed up for promotion and postseason assignments. That’s still pending, but in the meantime he’ll be working the postseason this year. At least part of it, as he’s been assigned to handle the Red Sox-Astros Division Series. That, and all of the other umpire assignments for the Wild Card and first round of the playoffs were announced yesterday.

Among some of our other favorite umps, Laz Diaz gets the Cubs-Nats series. Joe West gets nothing, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be back for the League Championship Series or World Series. We are never too far from getting some Joe West in our lives.

Here are the assignments. Lodge your complaints in the comments, where Major League Baseball will get right on them, I am certain.

How Are MLB Umpires Assigned to Games?

January 29, 2024

James Arnold

Major League Baseball (MLB) umpires are a fundamental part of every baseball game, contributing to the game’s integrity, consistency, and fairness. However, the process by which these umpires are assigned to specific games is not widely understood. This article aims to shed light on this intricate process, unveiling the factors considered in the assignment of MLB umpires to games, and how this impacts the overall conduct of this beloved sport.

How Are Umpires Chosen for MLB Games?

The process of assigning umpires to MLB games is a thorough and meticulous one, starting with their conduct and performance throughout the regular season. MLB umpires are under continuous assessment, with their ability to make accurate calls, their extensive knowledge of the official rulebook, and their overall professionalism being keenly observed. Only those who consistently exhibit proficiency and reliability get their names listed as potential candidates for postseason assignments.

The responsibility of selecting umpires for the much-anticipated MLB World Series falls on the shoulders of the MLB Chief Umpire. This official, along with a committee of experienced officials, analyses performance records to highlight those umpires who have truly outshined their counterparts. The process is strictly merit-based, prioritizing umpires who have demonstrated the most consistent performance, favorable evaluations, ample experience, and the capability to navigate the pressures of the MLB’s most prominent stage.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting the unique travel requirements of MLB umpires. Unlike teams that have a defined “home base”, umpires are expected to traverse the entire league’s territory. Their assignment patterns are carefully considered and orchestrated to ensure that umpires do not officiate games for a particular team too frequently, maintaining a level of impartiality and fairness. Simultaneously, efforts are made to minimize the exhaustive travel demands, striking a balance between logistical efficiency and the preservation of the game’s integrity. The league continually refines this process, aiming to ensure that the most qualified umpires are in the right place at the right time – a crucial factor in the fair and efficient running of the world’s premier baseball competition.

As the playoff rounds unfold and teams inch closer to the World Series, the assignment of umpires to each game becomes more strategic and is based on their demonstrated performance during these critical matches. Umpires who have a history of postseason experience and are available for the task at hand are given serious consideration for World Series assignments. The final selection of umpires is usually announced a few days before the commencement of the Series, sparking curiosity and stimulating conversations among both fans and players alike.

The ultimate objective of this meticulous selection process is to ensure that the umpires chosen maintain the highest standard of professionalism and impartiality in their decisions, thereby safeguarding the integrity of the game. Umpires become an indispensable part of the World Series narrative, with their ability to make unbiased and accurate calls adding to the grandeur of the event.

Rangers' Jacob deGrom takes step forward with 1st rehab outing

FRISCO, Texas -- Jacob deGrom has taken his biggest step yet toward getting back on a big league mound this season, something that's important to Texas' ace right-hander even with the Rangers essentially out of playoff contention.

DeGrom pitched in a game for the first time since April 28, 2023, throwing 29 pitches over two innings in a minor league rehab assignment at Double-A Frisco on Thursday night.

The defending World Series champions started the day 10 games back in the AL West with 34 games remaining, so the return of the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner doesn't figure to make a difference in the race.

It will be notable for the 36-year-old and the franchise that gave deGrom a $185 million, five-year contract in free agency before the 2023 season despite an extensive injury history. He made just six starts before being sidelined by his second major elbow surgery.

"It's very important," said deGrom, who struck out three after giving up two hits and a run to start his outing. "That way, I can treat the offseason a little bit more normal. If I don't get out there, it's going to feel like I've been rehabbing all that time through, whatever that is, almost a year and a half."

Location was a problem, deGrom thought, but he threw 21 pitches for strikes. The four-time All-Star mixed fastballs, including one at 100 mph for his first strikeout, with sliders and a few changeups.

DeGrom said those are likely to be the only three pitches he throws in a game this season, and he isn't sure how many rehab assignments he will need.

"I don't think we've gone that far yet," deGrom said. "One step at a time. Make sure I bounce back tomorrow, then we'll come up with a plan from there."

DeGrom spent his first nine major league seasons with the Mets, but threw only 156⅓ innings over 26 starts his last two years in New York.

He missed the final three months of 2021 with right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow, then didn't make his first big league start in 2022 until Aug. 2, after being shut down late in spring training because of a stress reaction in his right scapula.

Texas won all six games started by deGrom (2-0, 2.67 ERA) last season before he got hurt. His last game was against the New York Yankees when he exited early because of injury concerns for the second time in three starts. The surgery was June 12 last year.

The competitive juices were flowing for deGrom. He appeared to be joking with the home plate umpire at one point, but said he was actually questioning a pitch that was called a ball.

"Once you get out there, you're competing," deGrom said. "That's what we love to do. I've missed a year of it and kind of like want to be out there. This is the first step of it."

Three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer was supposed to take a step toward a return from right shoulder fatigue with a rehab start at Frisco on Friday night.

The Rangers scratched that plan with Scherzer and said there was no immediate word on what would be next for the 40-year-old who has been limited to eight starts by offseason back surgery along with nerve and arm issues during the season.
