‘Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead’ Review – A Condensed But Fun Live-Action Adaptation of the Manga

' src=

As unrealistic as zombie apocalypses are, the main character in Netflix’s movie 100 Zom: Bucket List of the Dead is easy to relate to. At the start of this live-action adaptation of Haro Asō ’s manga, Akira Tendō ( Eiji Akaso ) is annoyingly chipper as he starts his new job. Soon enough, though, reality hits Akira like a bullet train, and he becomes yet another exploited employee at his workplace. While his misery appears to be eternal, Akira is eventually given a second chance at life as a zombie virus overwhelms the world.

Upon learning of mankind’s fate, one caused by a mysterious and contagious virus, Akira is ecstatic. He doesn’t have to go to work anymore now that most everyone is either dead or zombified. As inappropriate as his first reaction seems, the story prefaces the chaos with enough evidence of why someone like Akira would rejoice in such a dire situation. Zom 100 humorously but also accurately captures intense Japanese work culture. Long hours, unpaid overtime, having to sleep at work, the inability to go home before the boss does —  it’s a grueling way of life that not everyone is cut out for, yet many people put up with it because that’s just how things are. So when Akira smiles in the face of pandemonium, the audience can’t help but smile with him.

Zom 100 rejects the grim aesthetic so innate to other zombie movies and instead prefers a brighter palette to better match Akira’s new outlook. Interior shots admittedly fall into old habits of modern filmmaking; the use of color-correction and underlighting is less severe than usual, but the practices remain in effect. In addition to the rich visuals on occasion, director Yusuke Ishida plays with space as a reflection of the characters’ inner feelings. The cramped offices and close quarters are a manifestation of frustration, fear, and sadness, whereas happiness, relief, and liberation are tied directly to the outside.

The characters of Zom 100 are all easy to like, thanks to the cast. Eiji Akaso captures Akira well with his winsome and animated performance. The reconciliation between Akira and best friend Kenichirō “Kencho” Ryūzaki ( Shuntarō Yanagi ) is endearing, if not underdeveloped when compared to that of the manga. And Mai Shiraishi brings out the delayed but inevitable warmth of fellow survivor Shizuka Mikazuki, who is crucial to Akira’s maturation when the group runs into the protagonist’s former boss, Gonzō Kosugi ( Kazuki Kitamura ).

Zom 100 is foremost a dramedy that just so happens to be set in a world filled with zombies. However, that’s not to say it’s devoid of action and horror. When it comes time to fight off the living dead, Akira and his friends (both existing and new) aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. The early zombie interactions are rather undemanding, but the movie wisely adapts the manga’s wild and Gyo -esque shark set piece in the last act. The charming Akaso finally dons his “superhero” suit — the former Kamen Rider actor knows a thing or two about heroics — and battles an outrageous shark zombie. The movie so far hasn’t boasted enough outlandish moments, but it most certainly delivers toward the end.

Comparisons are unavoidable, but the movie adequately sums up the manga’s discussions about work-life balance while also providing brisk storytelling, ample action, and appealing characters. With the manga still going and an anime adaptation underway, it would seem like this movie is perhaps unnecessary. Yet someone wanting a condensed retelling of the source material, or someone simply looking to explore Zom 100 for the first time, will be delighted with this version.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is now streaming on Netflix .

The bone-chilling Danish horror movie  Speak No Evil is getting a remake here in the States courtesy of Blumhouse and Universal, and the official trailer has arrived tonight.

Universal will release their Speak No Evil remake on September 13, 2024 .

Watch the official trailer below, fresh out of CinemaCon tonight.

James Watkins  ( The Woman in Black, Eden Lake ) is directing Speak No Evil  for Blumhouse and Universal, with  Mackenzie Davis  ( Terminator: Dark Fate, Happiest Season ) and  James McAvoy  ( Split, Glass ) set to star.  Scoot McNairy  ( Argo ) will also star.

In the remake, “When an American family is invited to spend the weekend at the idyllic country estate of a charming British family they befriended on vacation, what begins as a dream holiday soon warps into a snarled psychological nightmare.”

James Watkins also wrote the script for the Speak No Evil  remake.

Jason Blum will produce the upcoming film for Blumhouse, with Paul Ritchie, Christian Tafdrup, Jacob Jarek, and Bea Sequeira serving as Executive Producers.

Directed by Christian Tafdrup, the original  Speak No Evil  was selected as one of  Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Best International Horror Movies of 2022 . Daniel Kurland raved about the highly distressing Danish nightmare, “This claustrophobic character study eerily examines the nature of evil and the chilling realization that there doesn’t always need to be a reason for wickedness.  Speak No Evil  feels like the twisted Danish cousin to  Barbarian  and every tense moment of silence feels like it could evolve into a totally different type of horror.”

‘Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead’ review: a lively and life-affirming zombie comedy

A burnt-out corporate worker is overjoyed to learn he no longer has to come in to work when a zombie apocalypse hits

Just a month after the vibrant anime adaptation of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead debuted to rapturous praise, a live-action movie version, directed by Yusuke Ishida, has arrived on Netflix . Based on Haro Aso ( Alice in Borderland ) and Kotaro Takata’s acclaimed seinen manga, this light-hearted comedy-horror follows Akira Tendo (Eiji Akaso) – an exhausted and burnt-out corporate worker beaten down by his exploitative bosses. The film opens with a flashback to one year ago, when Akira is elated to join a major production company.

Before long, Akira’s enthusiasm is drained when his dream job becomes a nightmare. He’s forced to work for days on end in the office, he’s constantly berated by his superiors, he’s clocked hundreds of hours of unpaid overtime, and he’s even unable to use his annual leave. Fatigued and lifeless, Akira becomes a shell of his former happy self… a zombie one could say. That is until one day, an actual zombie apocalypse hits Japan. While being chased by hordes of undead, Akira suddenly realises that he won’t ever have to go to work again! Rather than grieving the end of the world or dreading his safety, Akira is filled with utter relief and joy.

‘Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead’ Netflix

For so long, he’s been mindlessly doing what other people want. It’s high time that Akira gets to do what he wants for a change. To that end, his vacation begins by writing down his bucket list – 100 things to do before becoming a zombie. The entries range from mundane (clean his room, dye his hair), to relatable (ride a motorcycle, confess his love to a girl), to the improbable (become a superhero). Notably, Akira seems resigned to becoming a zombie eventually, so security isn’t a primary concern. Sure, he’ll defend himself when he has to or help when others are in danger – but the priority is to live his life to the fullest on his own terms, in whatever time he has. The contrast between Akira’s carefree nature and everyone else’s panic is a running gag that never gets old.

As he goes around ticking things off his bucket list, he rescues his old buddy, a goofy jock named Kencho (Shuntarô Yanagi), and befriends loner survivalist Shizuka (Mai Shiraishi). Together, they stock up on supplies and drive around Japan in an RV, bonding by doing all the fun things that Akira wants to do. From its salaryman comedy first act to its buddy road trip second act, Zom 100 relies heavily on Akaso’s ability to convey upbeat positivity even under the most grotesque circumstances, and the main cast’s likeable performances. On both spectrums, this trio of actors do well to keep the audience invested just based on their winsome chemistry. Unfortunately, some of the humour does wear thin after a while, and the supporting characters feel flimsy because this 129-minute movie doesn’t have time to properly flesh-out Kencho and Shizuka’s personalities, motivations and backstories.

‘Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead’ Netflix

The film’s bonkers third act is likely to be very divisive as well. On one hand, it gives us the movie’s most emotional moments by bringing the narrative’s themes full circle. Upon finding sanctuary, does Akira value the safety of working a monotonous, soul-crushing job again? Or does he risk it all to find personal fulfilment and autonomy? On the other hand, the climax does present the most outrageously absurd monster in the history of cinema. Whether you find this last part to be hilarious or ludicrous – you have to give Zom 100 props for delivering one of the most singularly original visuals you’ve ever seen.

Is this movie on par with the manga or anime? Nope. Does it rank up there with other great zombie comedies like Shaun of the Dead or One Cut of the Dead ? Not even close. But taken on its own merits, the live-action Zom 100 is a pretty fun time – a consistently amusing adventure that makes up for its slightness with an abundance of silliness.

'Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead' Review: Netflix's Zombie Comedy Lacks Life

Though it starts out strong, this live-action manga adaptation is almost as undead as the zombies that populate it.

This review was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the film being covered here wouldn't exist. Of all the many zombie movies and shows that have been made, it is hard to think of ones where the impending end of the world at the hands of the undead has been met with a celebratory mood. There have been plenty of zombie comedies where our expectations for how this is supposed to go are torn apart just as the characters are, but the ubiquity of this story means there is always a hunger for something with a little bit more bite. Enter Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, an adaptation of the manga of the same name by Haro Aso , where the end of the world is merely the beginning of an initially sharp though increasingly superficial entry in the genre. It is a film that sets out to sink its teeth into something a bit deeper and more inventive only to merely serve up an experience with little to actually chew on.

The one doing the chewing while also trying to avoid becoming a meal himself is the young Akira Tendo ( Eiji Akaso ) who we first meet when he has gotten a new job. While initially thrilled at this opportunity, he gets a rude awakening when he is made to work for days straight under a domineering boss who takes him for granted. Any passion and joy we see are subsequently snuffed out as he begins shambling his way through life. He doesn’t want to quit though also begins to contemplate ways to get out of work by other means. This includes a grim moment where he considers suicide as he has been pushed to his breaking point. Thus, when the zombie apocalypse destroys everything he has ever known, this is exactly what he has been looking for. Once his shock subsides, he shouts out in joy at the prospect of not having to work himself to the bone any longer even when said bones could be ripped from his body. It is a promising start that gives way to a standard story that is occasionally silly though still ultimately slight. While not every work is going to change zombie films as we know them, this one had the potential to offer something far greater than what it actually delivered.

'Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead' Quickly Loses Its Charm

The initial hook of the film, where Akira is going to go about checking off his bucket list and living life to the fullest even as everything has gone to hell, is full of promise. In many regards, just being with him alone is where things could be rather joyous if the film had the patience to sit with them. Just seeing him goofing around is plenty of fun and where a more creative story could have started to carve out something special. Alas, this is fleeting as the film effectively speed runs through its more intriguing start to get down to zombie business as usual. There are groups of survivors that must reunite, journeys to be made, and communities to be discovered. Rather than turn zombie horror on its head as some other interesting entries in the genre have done and what this one seemed to be doing, it increasingly falls into overly familiar territory. Even when it literally takes to the sky, this is confined to montage as opposed to being a central part of the experience. Everything else remains grounded with the amusing moments ultimately feeling buried under a general tepidness that takes hold of the film.

RELATED: 'ZOM 100: Bucket List of the Dead': Trailer, Cast, Release Date, and Everything We Know So Far

What is most disappointing about the whole thing is that Akira is a wonderful character to build around. Even just his early shift from being vibrant and full of life to being beaten down by his job is effectively done as we see the light begin to leave his eyes. The moment where that returns as he shouts out before the title drops elicits a smile as we see that occur in the most unlikely of situations, the zombie apocalypse, that works because of how it is juxtaposed against what preceded it. That the happiest he has been is when the world ends is a stellar joke, but it is something the rest of the film is generally lacking. Some of this is tonal, with it losing its more cutting comedy for forced dramatic beats, while much of it is in its construction. For every absurd aside we get, like one surrounding a past football game that then transfers over to a solid gag about tackling a zombie, much of the rest feels recycled from other zombie works of the past. There was even a sense at a certain point that this could have been a disposable episode of The Walking Dead . It isn’t always like this, with the film having a bit more flair here and there to be consistently bad, though it is mostly mundane.

The Ending of 'Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead' Jumps the Shark

This reaches a breaking point in an ending that just feels like it is shambling along with little of the joy of what preceded it. There is a baffling moment where a crisis is created in a way that makes little sense in how poorly staged it is, but the greatest problem is the way its early thematic promise is largely abandoned. Even a ridiculous final zombie creation can’t give it enough spark to catch fire. For a film about breaking free of convention and trying out new things to make the best of a bad situation, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is mostly just bad. It does get the checking boxes part down, but there is little life to the experience. There are a whole host of moments where characters make grand proclamations about the importance of embracing life where you can and not falling into just going through the motions. Rather than feel triumphant, one just wishes that the film itself would have heeded its own advice.

The Big Picture

  • Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead had the potential to offer something innovative though ultimately falls into familiar zombie territory.
  • The initial concept of a bucket list in the midst of a zombie apocalypse is promising, but the film rushes through it to focus on a mostly standard zombie survival story.
  • Overall, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is mostly mundane and fails to live up to its early promise.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead – Netflix Review (3/5)

ZOM 100: BUCKET LIST OF THE DEAD on Netflix is a new Japanese zombie movie. It’s essentially a remake of the 2023 anime of the same title (based on a manga). And it does get very silly at times, but it’s also brutal. Read our full Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead movie review here!

ZOM 100: BUCKET LIST OF THE DEAD is a new Netflix movie from Japan (org. title is Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru made ni Shitai 100 no Koto ). It’s part dark and brutal (even before the zombies), but also very silly and kitsch at times.

Of course, the official genres of the movie are action, comedy, horror, sci-fi, and fantasy, so it makes sense. Also, it’s essentially based on a manga graphic novel and a remake of the 2023 anime series. Most live-action movies based on mangas or animes do tend to have a kitsch and a more light-hearted feel to them. At least at times.

Continue reading our Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead movie review below. Find it on Netflix from August 3, 2023.

“Like Milla Jovovich or something”

I love it when stories (especially kitsch genre productions) refer to other pop culture characters. Or even actors! So, when a super cool young woman shows up and the main character says she’s like “ Milla Jovovich or something”, then I am completely there with that character. Also, Milla Jovovich is one of the coolest action stars . Of any gender!

In Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead , we meet Akira Tendo (Eiji Akaso). He works at a company where all the employees are brutally overworked. The film opens on his first day on the job and before that day (which turns out to be  days ) is over, he realizes that it isn’t everything he thought it was.

He suffers endless late hours, brutal harassment from his boss, and is given illogical tasks with no end in sight. He quickly feels more dead than alive (yes, like a zombie). So, when he awakes to the city being overrun with zombies, he gets his first day off in a year. With some free time and death looming everywhere, he remains positive in the face of grotesque adversity.

That’s when Akira comes up with a list of 100 things he wants to do before he becomes a zombie. And then he sets out to complete his bucket list.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead - Netflix Review

Are you ready for Zombie Shark?

Just as the manga and anime series were famous for, this feature film live-action remake does also feature a zombie shark. Having recently watched the Sharksploitation documentary on Shudder it feels oddly familiar. The zombie shark in Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead  isn’t the main plot, but rather something that comes along in the third act of the story.

Anyone who likes shark movies and is excited about Meg 2: The Trench   is probably going to enjoy the zombie shark element. And yes, the zombie shark is one  cool  and very well-made creature!

Other than having a zombie shark, this Japanese Netflix zombie movie does also feature a lot of superfast zombies. Think Train to Busan -type zombies . You can’t just outrun them, but you can fairly easily outsmart them.

Watch Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead  on Netflix now!

The producer of this new manga-adapted zombie movie is the same as the one behind Alice in Borderland . That’s another popular Netflix production from Japan. A genre series that was made to have two seasons. And yes,  Alice in Borderland  was also based on a manga.

WANT MORE MANGA-BASED PRODUCTIONS ON NETFLIX? Our season 2 review of  Alice in Borderland  that came out earlier this year >

If you enjoy Japanese productions (and especially if you’re a fan of manga and/or anime), then you’ll definitely want to check out this one. As a whole, it wasn’t really my thing. However, I can recognize that it stays true to its own style and plot, which is certainly a plus. Also, the whole zombie element works really well.

Both the actual zombies and the more symbolic zombie-element of the story.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is on Netflix from August 3, 2023.

Director: Yusuke Ishida Screenplay: Tatsuro Mishima Cast: Eiji Akaso, Mai Shiraishi, Shuntaro Yanagi, Yui Ichikawa, Mayo Kawasaki, Akari Hayami, Miwako Kakei, Kurumi Nakata, Doronz Ishimoto, Mukau Nakamura, Shota Taniguchi, Kenta Satoi, Kazuki Kitamura

Plot of  Zom 100

A young man who has had life sucked out of him through his power-harassing boss wakes up one day to a zombie apocalypse and starts to pursue his “zombie apocalypse bucket list.”

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!

Akira Tendo (Shuichiro Umeda) is a typical salary worker who spends time clocking in and out at a company he’s grown to hate. Life just isn’t going that well for him — whether he’s having to deal with a job that uses him up or grappling with the idea that his crush doesn’t like him back, he wishes he could be doing something else.

Everything seems like a drag. But it can’t get any worse than when Akira walks in on his landlord to talk about rent, only to find him snacking on another tenant. The zombie apocalypse is here, and it looks like it’s not come a moment too soon. In Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead , Akira decides to take life by the horns and live it his way – going so far as to make a bucket list – so he can do everything he wants before the zombies destroy his life.

ZOM 100: BUCKET LIST OF THE DEAD : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: A man is seen frantically running through the streets in a city, surrounded by abandoned cars and dead body. A flyover reveals the entire area has essentially been decimated. The man is eventually chased down by a hungry zombie and eaten as the camera focuses on the message “Memento mori” in graffiti on a nearby wall.

The Gist : Akira has been living life without any kind of purpose for as long as he can remember. He hates his job, his apartment is a disaster area, and he just can’t will himself to move forward. Not only that, but coworker Saori Ohtori (Sora Amamiya) the only person who makes him feel sane at work, is having an affair with his boss.

Luckily, the zombies come. And that means Akira no longer has to go to work, or care about the trappings of everyday life. He’s free, and that means no more having to be weighed down by everything that’s been keeping him from living the way he wants to.

This gives him a new lease on life, especially because he has no need to continue working for a salary in a world where zombies are shambling around. He pens a to-do list in an attempt to complete a bucket list before he feels he’ll inevitably become a zombie.

This includes everything from learning to speak English to finding his dream woman. Most of humanity is terrified of what’s coming next as the zombies continue to multiply, but Akira can’t wait to see what he can do before it all comes crashing down, which leads to him being put in a variety of hilariously weird situations. Most people certainly don’t have this sort of reaction to zombies taking over, but for Akira, it feels like a dream come true.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Zom 100 is unlike so many other anime series given its unique premise, but it does have shades of Sankarea or even High School of the Dead , which also both deal with zombies in one form or fashion.

Our Take: Most zombie content focuses on the bleakness of the future and how terrifying it is that you’ll soon be faced with a miserable death at the hands of the undead. Zom 100 is refreshing in that it skirts those typical concerns and attacks the situation with a completely different approach.

Akira can’t be bothered to stop and think about the implications of what’s going on around him. It should be terrifying, but it’s a joke a minute as you root for Akira and his ability to finally live the life he’s been hoping to ever since he joined the workforce. If you’ve ever had a job you hated, it’s extremely relatable. And there are always things we wish we had done or had time to do.

In that, it’s less of a zombie series and more of a slice of life that delivers on the horror side. It’s just different enough to work, and in the most manic way possible. The zombies are pretty much icing on the cake.

Sex and Skin: Slightly sexual content when it comes to Akira finding out about his boss’s affair, but that’s about it.

Parting Shot: Akira reflects on life and how it’s changed since the zombie apocalypse after relaxing with a beer on the street by a convenience store. He comes to the conclusion that he’ll live life to the fullest and gets to work buying a pen and paper for his bucket list.

Sleeper Star: Sora Amamiya is already a celebrated voice actor, but she’s an excellent choice for Akira’s love interest — brief as that may be, anyway. She’s perfectly sweet and magnetic at the same time, while it always feels like there’s still some mystery to her.

Most Pilot-y Line: “I don’t have to go to work anymore? I’m free!” Akira screams at the top of his lungs while avoiding the droves of zombies after him. “Until yesterday, I saw the world in monochrome, shrouded in a black cloud. Blue skies! Green trees! Bright red blood! It’s been so long, I’d forgotten the world was full of color. I’m so happy to have a day off from work!”

Our Call: STREAM IT. Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is a raucous ride through the zombie apocalypse with a plucky protagonist. It’s a fun take on what we normally see out of the genre, and the first episode is set up for some serious fun in the future. Here’s hoping Akira gets to cross off everything on his bucket list.

(And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention that Netflix will be releasing a live-action version of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead in August 2023. Buckle up!)

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead Reviews

zom 100 movie review reddit

The visual pace, due to Ishida’s cutting, is quite high and the rapid shifting of imagery helps keeping the spectator engaged.

Despite it having some issues with pacing and presentation, the movie has interesting characters and some funny and thrilling moments along the way.

Full Review | Aug 11, 2023

It doesn’t even get much mileage out of its most incisive joke: that there’s only a fine line separating a sleep-deprived office drone from an honest-to-god zombie. That would’ve taken brains -- and teeth. This moribund comedy doesn’t have either.

It is over-the-top and whimsical, but since it’s a horror comedy, it’s appropriately tense and gnarly. The zombies look amazing, but that zombie shark had me punching the air in excitement.

zom 100 movie review reddit

For a film about breaking free of convention and trying out new things to make the best of a bad situation, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is mostly just bad. It does get the checking boxes part down, but there is little life to the experience.

Full Review | Original Score: C- | Aug 3, 2023

This is a humorous zombie flick with many parallels to the working class and the repetitiveness of the daily routine.

zom 100 movie review reddit

All in all, Zom 100, is another fun adaptation that adds to its source material instead of taking anything away.

Zom 100 Netflix Movie Review

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is a refreshing and hilarious take on the zombie genre that injects a healthy dose of comedy into an apocalyptic setting. The film follows the story of Akira, a downtrodden office worker who finds an unexpected sense of liberation in the midst of a zombie outbreak. Portrayed by the talented Akaso Eiji, Akira’s transformation from a corporate drone to an enthusiastic thrill-seeker is both entertaining and heartwarming.

The concept of using a zombie apocalypse as a catalyst for self-discovery and adventure is brilliantly executed. Instead of the usual fear and panic associated with such an event, Akira embraces the chaos as an opportunity to live life to the fullest. His determination to complete 100 tasks before potentially becoming a zombie himself sets the stage for a series of hilarious and often heartwarming encounters.

The chemistry between Akaso Eiji’s Akira, Shiraishi Mai’s Shizuka, and Yanagi Shuntaro’s Kencho is the backbone of the film. Their camaraderie and interactions with various zombies and survivors add layers of humor and charm to the narrative. The dynamics between the characters, each with their unique quirks and personalities, keep the audience engaged and entertained throughout the film.

Director Ishida Yusuke skillfully balances horror elements with laugh-out-loud moments, creating a film that seamlessly transitions between heart-pounding action and witty comedy. The screenplay by Mishima Tatsuro stays true to the essence of the hit manga, capturing the spirit of the source material while presenting a fresh and engaging story for both fans and newcomers alike.

Production by Morii Akira ensures that the film maintains a high level of visual and technical quality, bringing the zombie-infested world to life with impressive practical effects and cinematography. The combination of well-choreographed action sequences and clever comedic timing contributes to the overall enjoyment of the film.

Based on the hit manga by Aso Haro and Takata Kotaro, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead successfully translates the beloved comic book series into an entertaining and dynamic cinematic experience. It offers a delightful mix of zombie mayhem, laugh-out-loud humor, and heartfelt moments of self-discovery, making it a standout entry in the zombie-comedy genre.

In summary, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is a must-watch for fans of horror comedies and those looking for a fresh take on the zombie apocalypse trope. With its engaging characters, well-executed humor, and creative premise, the film is a delightful rollercoaster ride that leaves the audience entertained and satisfied.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead - Review

The zombie apocalypse has never been so optimistic.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead Season 1 Review

The complete first season of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is now streaming on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Hulu.

It’s hard to keep the zombie genre fresh, given all the different types of stories it encompasses. This makes any new, halfway decent zombie show or movie all the more special. Thankfully, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead – which concluded its first season last month – is more than halfway decent: It’s a zombie anime with a delightful premise, and one of the best first episodes of an anime in a long time.

Based on the manga of the same name written by Haro Aso and illustrated by Kotaro Takata, Zom 100 follows Akira Tendo, an office worker for the kind of  exploitative employer known as a “black company” in Japan. Most of the first episode is a gritty and painfully relatable tale about the way we chain ourselves to routines and lives we never wanted for the sake of money, or because of other people's expectations, and how that slowly kills a part of us. For a guy as miserable as Akira, the start of a zombie apocalypse is not a curse, but a blessing. When the dead rise, he finally gets to live his best life.

This masterclass in visual storytelling is one of the single best episodes of anime in a long time. Framing, composition, and color are used to sell Akira's daily torment as well as his elation the sight of a horde of flesh-eating ghouls. As Akira's work life gnaws away at him, the colors become more muted – before the zombie apocalypse ushers in a burst of vibrant hues. Akira then rips the black bars off the screen, and expanding the aspect ratio as he embraces life for the first time in years. And that’s all just the first episode.

The rest of the season 1 focuses on Akira's efforts to live life to its fullest, crossing items off a bucket list (like spending an entire day doing nothing but playing games and drinking beer) while befriending other surviving doofuses. Those doofuses include a himbo who dreams of becoming a comedian (though getting naked and acting foolish is the extent of his act), a survivalist who slowly embraces life and fun, and a German tourist who loves Japan so much she goes around in samurai cosplay chopping off zombie heads with a big dumb smile on her face.

At its core, this is a road trip show, with the gang going around Japan on adventures that are as wholesome as they are funny. But it’s stilla zombie story, too, and Zom 100 works as a refreshing take on the walking dead. For one, everyone in this story is aware of zombies: Akira is shown slaying video-game zombies  at one point, and we meet a movie makeup artist who didn't realize the zombies weren’t fake until it was too late. This means there’s no time wasted on learning the rules, no time spent having to convince people that the zombies are dangerous. Instead, we go straight into bonkers situations like a trip to an aquarium that turns into a fight against a zombie shark (really). Though Zom 100 is all about our main group of survivors, it occasionally turns its attention elsewhere, painting a more global picture reminiscent of World War Z, which helps make the show's world feel lived-in.

The central theme is  “starting over,” for better and worse. This informs every character, and every story, meaning that even when we get to one of the tried-and-true conventions of the genre – villains who prove that the humans are the real monsters  – it works because we see how these characters were just waiting for an excuse to act on their worst impulses. This vile group may seem a bit cartoonish, but it quickly becomes clear how their hedonistic desires were brought upon by a feeling that the world wronged them. It’s rather realistic and timely — as evidenced by the rise in loud, destructive, horrible misanthropes who’ve thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As violent and gory as Zom 100 can be –  splashed in multi-colored paint that stands in for blood splatter –, it’s also hilarious. The humor of Zom 100 lies somewhere between the hangout tone of Shaun of the Dead and the self-aware comedy of Zombieland. Because it’s all about enjoying the little things, the characters mostly act like idiots with little regard for common sense or caution. It works, though, because Akira never stops reminding the audience how fleeting their joy is. His bucket list is made up of things he wants to do before he turns into a zombie. He has already resigned himself to the fact that he will eventually succumb to the walking dead. We know from the very beginning that life was miserable for these characters, and it very well can be again. But before they turn into ghouls, why not have some fun?

If there’s is one big problem with Zom 100, it’s that its first season was plagued by production delays that made it a less-than-perfect watch. There was a three-month break before the final three episodes aired; after the stellar premiere, the quality of the animation proved unreliable. And yet, even an average installment of Zom 100 is rather great, and there’s no discounting how genuinely brilliant the first few episodes are.

The Verdict

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead delivers a refreshing take on the zombie genre by turning the apocalypse into a huge playground where protagonists make their dreams come true or die trying. With a vibrant color palette, endearing characters, and a fantastic sense of humor, this is a deeply relatable and funny zombie story.
