The study used the Approaches to Studying Inventory of Ramsden and Entwistle (1981) on a sample of 1095 internal and external students at the Capricornia Institute and the Tasmanian State Institute of Technology in Australia. The inventory yields scores for sixteen sub-scales relating to approach to study. Discriminant analyses were performed separately for external and internal students, using the sub-scale scores as discriminating variables. The variables distinguished significantly between those who persisted with a course and those who withdrew or failed. Discriminant functions were also produced to distinguish students receiving pass grades from those achieving a higher grade. A different set of variables appeared in this discriminant function showing that withdrawal or drop-out could not be treated as part of a continuous scale of grades awarded. The results are discussed in terms of the relationship between input variables (eg, curriculum, instructional design and learning environment), process (approach to studying) and the output or course outcomes. Surface approach was the major discriminator between withdrawal, or failure, and persistence. The effect of study skills programmes and curriculum changes on surface approach and hence persistence is discussed.

Students' learning and studying approaches have positive effect on the quality of learning, academic achievement and performance. The aim of this study was to explore if the students' learning and studying approaches show significant differences in terms of gender, departments and Undergraduate Placement Exam (UPE) scores. The current study was conducted during 2016-2017 academic year with the participation of 56 female and 122 male students of different departments at Yildiz Technical University. Approaches to Learning and Studying Inventory (ALSI), developed by Hounsell, Entwistle, Anderson et al. (2002) and adapted to Turkish by Topyaka, Yaka and Ogretmen (2011) was used to identify students' approaches to learning and studying. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Independent t-test, and Pearson correlation analysis. According to the findings, it was concluded that there were not any significant differences of university students' approaches to learning and studying such as surface, deep, and strategic approaches in terms of their departments. The results also showed that there are significant differences between female and male students regarding their departments. Moreover, it was found out that there is a positive correlation between students' UPE scores and strategic learning approaches, while there is a negative relation between students' UPE scores and deep learning approaches.

Abstract. The inherent structure of the study process is central to the provision of meaningful opportunities geared towards the achievement of success in any academic programme. Given this scenario, Biggs’ Study Process Questionnaire (SPQ) was administered to first year university physics students in order to establish their perceptions about the nature of the study process which underscores the academic achievement. Analysis of SPQ responses provided valuable insights into students’ perceptions about the nature of the study process. While the use of deep approach appeared to be a predominant learning tool within the context of this inquiry, a substantial number of students still appeared to employ surface approach to navigate their studies.

Previous research has generallyfailed to find a relation between the waystudents approach the task of studying andtheir exam grades. The present studyinvestigated why it is that a deep approach tostudying, which has been shown to result in ahigher quality of learning, does notconsistently result in higher exam grades. Theparticipants in the study were 49 third-yearpsychology students. They completedquestionnaires that assessed approaches tostudying, motivation, and intelligence. Theirfinal exam marks, along with indicators of thequality of their final exam responses and thequantity of information reproduced in the finalexam were used as indicators of academicperformance. The results showed that the deepstudy approach was linearly related to thequality of exam responses, but quadraticallyrelated to the quantity of informationreproduced. The use of the deep approach was nomore effective in facilitating high exam marksfor questions that emphasised understanding ofthe study material than for questions thatemphasised reproduction of it. Taken together,these findings suggest that students who usehigh levels of the deep approach fail toconsistently achieve higher exam grades becauseof deficiencies in the quantity of theirresponses, rather than because of theinsensitivity of exams to students'understanding of the study material.
