Northeastern University’s online Doctor of Education program provides experienced adult learners, working professionals, and scholar-practitioners from diverse backgrounds and perspectives with the practical knowledge and experience they need to transform the learning landscape. Students gain innovative approaches to create authentic change in their communities. The program was selected as the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate's Program of the Year for 2022-2023.

The Doctor of Education program is designed to be completed in three to four years of study—following a fast-paced quarter system in lieu of a traditional semester format. Students choose from five concentrations to create a curriculum that matches personal and professional interests. The program's dissertation in practice process will begin at the onset of your coursework as you identify your problem of practice and develop an action plan—incorporating cycles of data collection and analysis, collaboration, change work, and reflection—culminating in the dissemination of your action research findings. Our students come from diverse disciplines and professions, seeking more than just a degree. You'll gain a practical education that translates to your everyday working environment.

While all EdD courses can be completed online (except for hybrid courses in Seattle and Charlotte), annual in-person two-day residencies are held on campus. Residencies focus on networking and tools for career success and allow you to connect with faculty and fellow scholars to share knowledge and experience. You'll attend residencies* in your first and second years of the program at one of our campuses in Boston, Charlotte, or Seattle.

The School of Advanced Study offers students with an appropriate topic and level of local resource the opportunity to undertake a PhD by distance learning.

Students are required to attend our London campus at set intervals to complete an intensive research training module, for upgrade, and for the viva but will otherwise study at their own location. This option is available to UK, EU, and international students on the same basis as our on-campus PhD programmes (three years full time, six years part time).

If you would like to be considered for our Research Degree via Distance Learning programme, please complete the  Research Degrees by Distance Learning form  and attach it to your online application.

Course structure

Compulsory attendance in London is required on three occasions: 

• Induction, the first week of the first term,  to meet supervisors and to undertake an intensive research training course (an optional second week of research training is offered that can be completed either in the week after the initial compulsory induction week or online during the first term);  
• The point of upgrade to PhD status  (usually between years 1 and 2 for full time students and between years 3 and 4 for part-time students)
• The final viva (oral defence of the thesis)

Note: The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies' week-long induction/research training for research students (whether on campus or distance learning) is usually held in January. 

The induction week provides guidance in the following areas:

• Research ethics
• Academic writing
• Working with your supervisor
• Planning your thesis
• Building a bibliography
• Working in archives

Students are required to engage with further research training online as their programme commences.

The programme is run on the same basis as campus-based programmes.  Regular contact with the supervisor is required via video conferencing software.  Students will meet with their supervisor in the induction week where future arrangements will be made for the occurrence and means in which meetings will take place.  Students will need to demonstrate that they have the appropriate local resources, IT equipment and infrastructure before they can commence study.

Students will benefit from the School’s extensive research training portfolio, online e-resources, podcasting, video recordings, transcriptions and live streaming of research seminars on a wide range of topics to help them complete their research degree. 

Research modules will include, but are not limited to, Organising Successful Academic Events, Getting Research Published, Public Speaking, Research Data and Ethics.

Distance students will be supported in the same way that the on-campus students are with the use of video conferencing to supplement face-to-face interaction. Within the induction week distance students will be given the opportunity to meet their student representatives and other students beginning their PhD.

To ensure that the students are fully supported and provided with the best tools and guidance throughout their PhD, applications will be considered on an individual basis. As not all Institutes offer the distance program, each student’s needs will be considered individually and an appropriate Institute and supervisory team recommended.

PhD by Distance

Our PhD by Distance programme allows you to benefit from our world-class support and the expertise of a Reading-based supervisor, while conducting your research in a location that suits your circumstances. 

The programme is available to candidates who need to study for most of their registration period at another site, whether in the UK, or worldwide. Acceptance for PhD by Distance is subject to the approval of the supervisors and the Dean of Postgraduate Research Studies and Researcher Development.

There are several reasons why you may wish to base yourself away from the University of Reading while undertaking your PhD:

• the nature of your research project requires substantial access to resources and facilities located away from Reading
• you have employment commitments relevant to your research that prevent you from being based in Reading
• your PhD project has been agreed as part of a specific partnership/sponsorship arrangement.

You can choose to complete a PhD by Distance programme on either a part-time or full-time basis.

What the programme offers

On the PhD by Distance programme, you will benefit from:

• supervision from one or more leading University of Reading academics, working at the forefront of their field
• access to a range of high-quality training, delivered on campus or online 
• access to extensive online Library resources
• a reduced tuition fee  set at half the standard full- or part-time rate for periods when studying off-campus for students starting in 2023/24. For students starting in 2024/25 onwards, the tuition fee will increase in line with on-campus fees
• a PhD qualification which is examined at the same level as a campus-based PhD and a standard PhD degree certificate which does not state the mode of study on it.

Eligibility

In addition to meeting the standard academic and language eligibility requirements, you must be able to demonstrate that you:

• can successfully conduct your research with the resources available to you at your off-campus study site
• have access to appropriate IT facilities, so that you can engage in supervision and training from your off-campus study site
• have the necessary time, commitment and appropriate attitude toward studying off-campus.

PhD by Distance

The PhD by Distance programme allows students who are unable to commit to basing themselves in Edinburgh to study for a PhD in a field of Health in Social Science from their home country or city.

What's involved?

The PhD by Distance is not intended to be an online learning programme.

Students enrolled on this programme will be expected to come to Edinburgh at least once per year of study to meet with their supervisors.

The length and timing of these visits are negotiable but students should expect to spend at least two weeks at the University of Edinburgh during each year of study.

This could be for the annual review process, or to attend research training courses. It is also expected that PhD by Distance students will come to Edinburgh for their oral examination (viva voce).

PhD by Distance students will receive the same level of support and supervision as on-campus students. The frequency with which students will meet with their supervisors, and method of communication for supervision sessions, will be provisionally agreed at the point of application and confirmed during induction. This must include at least one face-to-face supervision session each year with additional meetings and communication on a regular basis.  

Please be aware that some funding bodies do not permit students to study by distance, for example both ESRC and AHRC regulations currently state that students must be residents at the Institution where they are studying.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for the PhD by Distance are the same as for the School’s on-campus PhD programmes.  

In addition, applicants to the PhD by Distance will also be required to complete a PhD by Distance Applicant Admission Form and Study Plan.

Applicants should provide information about previous experience of distance study together with a statement detailing the potential risks and characteristics of distance learning.

Experience of studying at a distance is desirable in applying for the programme however this is not a specific requirement for admission.

It is important however that applicants demonstrate an awareness of the challenges of this mode of study.

Applicants must also provide details of the access they will have to research facilities at the normal site of study and whether a local advisor is proposed.

Applications to the PhD by Distance will only be accepted if applicants have access to local University standard library facilities and to the internet.

Applicants will also be required to have a discussion with the proposed principal supervisor and to complete a provisional study plan in consultation with them as part of the admissions process.

International students wishing to study part-time will be considered for this Distance programme.

‘Knot’ Your Average Approach to Design Education

NC State’s Doctor of Design (D.Des) program in the College of Design is unique — just like the student-practitioners it attracts. 

A mere eight years old, NC State’s D.Des program is the only one in the country offering a blended (hybrid in-person and virtual) structure for established design professionals to conduct original research on the application of human-centered design and its impacts on society. 

Students explore compelling topics such as therapeutic gardens for youth rehabilitation, video game design for restorative therapy and universal design for cross-species communication. 

And knot tying. 

New D.Des graduate Jonathan Williams has spent the last few years practicing the art of tying knots — and exploring how knot tying can be used to teach foundational principles of design to beginning design students. 

“All children are learning to be designers when they learn to tie their shoes,” Williams explained. “Tying knots is a gateway to design.”

A Cutting-Edge Cohort

An established instructional designer and designer manager, Williams is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Human Centered Design in the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems at Pace University in New York City. His resumé includes design work for Harvard Business School and New York University, along with various nonprofit and continuing education organizations. 

Williams had always wanted to go back to school to complete his doctoral degree as a means of transitioning into a faculty role, but knew he would need to also be in practice as a designer to reap the benefits of the program and better understand his professional context. 

The NC State D.Des program was a perfect fit. 

“The D.Des program spoke to me on many levels,” Williams said. “The online distance education structure allowed me to balance my busy schedule and stay in New York while adding the credential I needed to move my career forward. Linking the practice of design to the research of design was a very exciting prospect.”

Williams also appreciated the program’s immersive week-long in-residence workshops each semester. Connecting in person with his peers and program faculty offered inspiration for exploring new areas of design scholarship and practice. 

“Our students are a very different type of student: more like peers, some CEOs in the mix, people working on the cutting edge of the design industries,” said M. Elen Deming , director of the program and Professor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. 

The D.Des faculty, Williams says, were incredibly supportive. “My committee chair Derek Ham played a pivotal role in helping me develop my scholarship,” he said. “He pushed me to become a better researcher and shared his own research generously. And I could not have completed this degree without the support of Elen [Deming], who kept opening doors for me to grow my skills.”

Derek Ham is department head and associate professor of Media, Arts, Design and Technology in the College of Design. 

“My experience in the D.Des program has been fantastic,” Williams said. “I have learned so much from my peers, and my committee members unlocked invaluable opportunities for me to progress in my career and research.” 

‘Knots Found Me’

“Learning design through designerly knotting,” the subject and title of Williams’ dissertation for the D.Des program, considers how object-based, tactile learning experiences with knots can be integrated within design classrooms and studios. 

Williams’ D.Des research worked with two groups of beginning design students, high school and adult learners, to accomplish a series of knot tying exercises and activities. Through their creation of “designerly” knots, students uncovered foundational principles of design throughout the process. 

“Jonathan’s dissertation demonstrates that object-based learning can be used as a way to unlock students’ creativity, confidence, and comprehension of larger, complex spatial thinking, such as mathematics and geometry, among other things,” Professor Deming explained. 

Williams became interested in the idea of knots as a tactile education tool after reading an essay on knot tying as a means of self-expression. A mathematical statistics major as an undergraduate at Wake Forest University, Williams was immediately drawn to the computational appeal of knotting. 

The essay, Williams explained, was beautiful — and prompted an “aha” moment during which “knots found me.” Knotting quickly became central to both his research and practice: “Design has a unique disciplinary angle that can add to the current literature on knot tying.”

And, yes, Jonathan has tied a lot of knots.

“As I have explored this topic over the last few years, I’ve become quite interested in physically making knots of all shapes, sizes, and patterns,” he said. 

Williams is often asked what his favorite knots are. He loves to tie the Carrick Mat knot , for its symmetry and aesthetic appeal. “I like that you can play with the scale of it,” he explained. “I have one that is massive — you can walk on it.” He also likes Windy Chien’s doughnut knot , a favorite of his students for its simplicity and recognizable style. 

“A beginning design classroom or studio is a special space to share with a student,” Williams said, and knotting provides an approachable catalyst for exploration of the design discipline. 

“Knots are everywhere — from shoelaces to ships — and most of us have tied knots in our lives,” he continued. “Activating that prior knowledge of knot tying radically opens us up to new possibilities in design.” 

The Work of Learning 

Earning his doctorate was a five-year journey for Williams, during which he consistently worked full-time. Not content to sit on his laurels, however, he is already thinking about what will come next. 

“I’m a big believer in lifelong learning,” he said. “The work of learning never stops.”

He advises other working professionals to explore professional opportunities by engaging in continuing education experiences at every career stage, whether online, in person or somewhere in between.

Harvard’s Mignone Center for Career Success recently hosted an insightful discussion spotlighting the remarkable journeys of a select group of GSAS alumni who have masterfully leveraged their Ph.D. degrees to forge unique and gratifying career paths. Their experiences not only illuminate the expansive landscape of career possibilities for graduate students but also stand as beacons of inspiration for Ph.D. students and recent graduates navigating their own professional journeys.  Here are some reflections I’ve summarized from the panel discussion on exploring non-academic career paths: the motivations, the timing, and the process.

Why? – A Multitude of Motivations

Dean Emma Dench’s opening remarks for the panel, noting that approximately 50% of Harvard PhDs become intellectual leaders outside academia, set the stage for a discussion on the motivations driving individuals to explore non-academic career paths. These motivations are as diverse as the individuals themselves, ranging from financial considerations to differing interpretations of job satisfaction and expectations.  Moreover, panelists emphasized the presence of abundant opportunities available beyond academia and the importance of gaining a comprehensive understanding of the broader professional landscape. Embracing this perspective involves stepping outside the traditional academic paradigms, challenging preconceptions about career paths dictated by one’s degree or department. Instead, it involves introspectively questioning what truly fosters personal fulfillment and utilizing one’s unique background and expertise to craft a career trajectory that aligns with individual aspirations.

When? – The Sooner, the Better

The panel collectively emphasized the importance of early exploration into non-academic career paths, highlighting the immense value in stepping beyond conventional trajectories and embracing diverse experiences. Their insight underscores that this journey isn’t solely about finding a different career path; it’s about broadening perspectives and building a vibrant professional community, irrespective of the ultimate career trajectory.   While transitioning out of academia may be smoother for some fields or labs compared to others, actively delving into learning about alternative career paths enables individuals to challenge norms and foster connections with mentors who can offer invaluable support along the way. The environment at Harvard, with its diverse peers and alumni network, facilitates this exploration and openness to new opportunities, acting as a catalyst for personal and professional growth.

How? – Navigating the Process

Drawing from their diverse career paths, the panelists offered valuable strategies and frameworks to guide individuals through the transition process. Each insight struck a chord with attendees, offering relatable anecdotes and invaluable guidance. Below is a compilation of key takeaways distilled from the discussion:

• Embrace Career Exploration and Experimentation:
• Explore diverse opportunities and pathways even if they seem unconventional or outside your comfort zone
• Recognize that your first job doesn’t have to be perfect, and that career progression often involves trying different roles and industries

• Identify the transferable skills gained during your academic journey and identify your strengths. Introspect on how your strengths align with roles outside academia, consider doubling down on skills you excel in and enjoy.

• Approach networking with a mindset of curiosity and growth, fostering genuine relationships that support your career development.
• Articulate your accomplishments and expertise with confidence to bolster your credibility and draw opportunities towards you.
• Engage in informational interviews to gain valuable insights into various job responsibilities, organizational cultures, and career paths, allowing you to assess your fit within different professional contexts.
• Take a proactive approach to relationship-building by categorizing connections based on shared interests and goals. Remember, networking is a two-way street; look for opportunities to offer support, share insights, and connect others within your network.

• Invest in Your Professional Growth:
• View informational interviews, hands-on learning opportunities and internships as pivotal investments in shaping your future career path.
• Proactively seek out opportunities that foster continuous learning, cultivate enduring professional relationships, and steer your career in desired direction.
• Hone the art of articulation and effective communication to confidently convey your skills, experiences, and achievements, aligning them with the needs of different roles and organizations.
• Conquer decision paralysis by taking action: apply for open positions and initiate conversations with new connections. Embrace the interview process as an opportunity for growth and learning, gaining valuable insights along the way.

In conclusion, the panel discussion offered profound insights into navigating non-academic career paths. These key takeaways underscore the significance of charting one’s unique path with confidence and purpose in the dynamic landscape of non-academic careers.

Mays Family Foundation Donates $25 Million For Graduate Education Building

A $25 million gift from the Mays Family Foundation will support the construction of a new graduate education building in the Mays Business Education Complex (BEC) at Texas A&M University. This gift was announced during a ceremony Friday, April 26.

The foundation’s donation is the largest single donation in Mays Business School’s history, and it is one of the largest gifts to an academic program at Texas A&M University. The gift, provided through the Texas A&M Foundation, continues the philanthropic legacy of the Mays family and highlights the powerful commitment of Texas A&M’s former students to their alma mater.

“Lowry Mays and his family have been giving back to Texas A&M for a lifetime,” said General (Ret.) Mark A. Welsh III, president of Texas A&M University. “This incredible gift adds another layer to their contributions to Texas A&M and to Aggies who want to follow in Mr. Mays’ remarkable footsteps.”

This gift also marks an important milestone in Mays Business School’s drive to become the nation’s preeminent public business school. “This generous investment by the Mays Family Foundation will help us continue to fulfill our vision of building a better future through business,” said Mays Dean Nate Sharp. “Having a building dedicated specifically to excellence in graduate education showcases our school’s commitment to recruiting the best and brightest graduate students and developing leaders of character who exemplify the Aggie Core Values throughout their careers.”

Mays continues to make its mark in graduate education. Several of the school’s graduate programs are among the top programs in the nation, such as the M.S. Analytics Program (ranked #1 online program in 2024 by  Fortune ) and the Executive MBA Program (ranked #1 in Texas in 2024 by  Fortune ).

The new building will support increased enrollments and innovative graduate learning opportunities for current programs as well as new programs designed to meet emerging needs, including a suite of new Mays Flex Online master’s programs and the new Engineering MBA program.

Enhancing and expanding graduate programs at Mays Business School will support the school’s drive to preeminence.

“Our foundation has a history of using philanthropy as a source of capital to fund projects for all types of nonprofits to generate free cash flow in support of their mission,” said Mays Family Foundation Chair Kathy Mays Johnson . “This is a perfect example of that strategy, so it is fitting that the Mays name will be associated with this project, which will be a tipping point for the Mays Business Education Complex. We believe Dean Sharp and his leadership team have a compelling vision and plan for Mays Business School, and it is our honor to help facilitate it.”

The Mays family’s involvement with Texas A&M began with Lowry Mays ’57, who earned a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering.

“My father credited his time at Texas A&M, which included serving in the Corps of Cadets and his studies in the School of Petroleum Engineering, as being one of the most important influences in his life,” Johnson said. “He was proud to say the lessons he learned at Texas A&M solidified his core values while the education he received enabled him to accomplish the success he had in his life.”

After a short period working in petroleum engineering, Mays changed direction to pursue a business career.

“Dad earned an MBA from Harvard, so he saw the value of that type of training firsthand,” Johnson said. “He wanted future Aggies to be able to benefit from a similarly top-notch MBA program but one that is steeped in Texas A&M’s Core Values.”

Mays initially entered investment banking in San Antonio and eventually formed his own company. He was asked to co-sign a note for the purchase of an FM radio station in the 1970s — and eventually became the station’s owner. His willingness to learn about the media industry, combined with his strong entrepreneurial sense and business acumen, led to the founding of Clear Channel Communications, a market leader in media and advertising.

Despite the professional demands of being Clear Channel’s CEO, Mays made time for his alma mater. The San Antonio businessman served two non-consecutive terms (1985-1991 and 2001-2007) on The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, including a term as chairman from 2003-2005.

Over the years, he also provided significant financial support to the business school. His giving included a $15 million endowment to the school of business in 1996 that resulted in the naming of the school in his honor and another $25 million across multiple gifts to the school in 2017. The new $25 million gift now brings the Mays family’s support for Mays Business School to $72 million.

Lowry Mays passed away on Sept. 12, 2022, at 87 years of age. However, his influence lives on through his family’s involvement at Texas A&M. His granddaughter, Paige Johnson ’21, is a graduate of Mays Business School and a member of the Mays Dean’s Advisory Board.

The Mays Family Foundation’s latest gift will support the school’s commitment to extending and enhancing its graduate programs, something the school’s namesake would applaud.

“Dad was known for his entrepreneurial acumen and his leadership skills,” Johnson said. “He played a pivotal role in growing Mays Business School and we are looking forward to seeing the MBA program and other graduate programs grow beyond measure while meeting changing industry needs, so that we are the preeminent public business school in the country.”

MA Graduate Silvia Ortiz is a passionate advocate for rural, bilingual learners

As a proud bilingual teacher in her school, Silvia Ortiz exemplifies excellence in teaching, leadership and advocacy for bilingual learners at her school and in her small rural district. Ortiz is a passionate advocate for her mostly Latinx bilingual students as an English Language Development Teacher at Hudson Elementary School in Weld RE-3 School District. 

As a member of the BUENO Center for Multicultural Education’s Northeast Teacher Cohort, Otriz was able to earn her Master’s Equity Bilingualism and Biliteracy from the CU Boulder School of Education by attending courses close to home in Brighton and alongside 20 peer educators across three districts in the rural northeast region of Colorado.

Respected by her colleagues and revered in her community, Ortiz is also a strong bilingual writer and thinker. She completed her Teacher Inquiry Project, the culminating project and report for her master’s program, bilingually written in Spanish and English where she explored bilingual identities of her young Latinx students through linguistically and culturally responsive children’s literature. 

For her work as an exemplary educator and graduate student, Ortiz has been selected the 2024 Outstanding Graduate of the Master’s in Equity, Bilingualism and Biliteracy Program by the faculty in the BUENO Center. However, she has been a member of BUENO Center community since she participated first in the BUENO Career Ladder program in 2005, a partnership between CU Boulder and Aims Community College, on her pathway to becoming a teacher. Engaging in the master’s program helped bring Ortiz’s career, education, and connections with CU Boulder full circle.

Please tell us a bit about yourself

My journey to CU Boulder is a unique one. I reside in the Brighton area and teach in a small town in Northeastern Colorado. During my undergraduate program, I had the privilege of participating in the BUENO program through the Career Ladder Program. This experience not only deepened my passion for educational equity but also paved the way for my decision to pursue my master’s degree through the BUENO program at CU Boulder. The opportunity to return to BUENO now as a graduate student was a clear sign that this was the right path for me."

What is one of the most significant lessons from your time at CU Boulder that you’ll carry with you into the next chapter ?

I have always considered myself a lifelong learner, and my time at CU Boulder has satiated my desire to explore new learning and revive my passion for equity for bilingual learners. The most profound and significant lesson I take away from my time at CU Boulder is this: all of our students come to us with various gifts and talents. It is up to us, educators, to explore such gifts and talents and leverage them to inspire and nurture independent learners and thinkers. By disrupting injustices created by systemic oppression we give our students the opportunities to thrive."

What does graduating from CU Boulder represent for you and/or your community?

Graduating from CU Boulder as a BUENO Center master’s student is a momentous achievement. CU Boulder has always been at the forefront of educational equity and advocacy for bilingual students and communities. As a Latina, this accomplishment holds a special place in my heart. It is a testament to my dedication and the support I have received from my community. This honor will undoubtedly enrich my work with my brilliant bilingual students."

What is your best piece of advice for incoming students?

I believe that one’s most remarkable ability is the ability to use metacognition. The ability to evaluate, monitor, and apply new teachings to our understanding is essential. A student with the caliber of being a critical thinker and having metacognitive awareness will find success in their endeavors."

What are your next steps after graduation?

As a lifelong learner, I have enjoyed my time as a student. Now is the time to apply all of what I've learned. My graduate program was robust and rich, with mastery in the field of educational equity. Now is my time to discern how best to apply my newfound knowledge in my specific role. Furthermore, I would like to inspire other educators through my example and leadership."
