Complete guide to ph.d. in india: duration, costs, eligibility, and recent updates.

Dr. Somasundaram R

Table of contents

How many years is a ph.d. in india, how much does a ph.d. cost in india, what qualifications are required for a ph.d. in india, what is the age limit for a ph.d. in india is 25 too old to start a ph.d., can i do a ph.d. without the national eligibility test (net), who is eligible for direct ph.d. admission, is it okay to do a ph.d. without a master’s degree, what are the recent rules for ph.d. admissions in india, 25 tips to join phd in india, 10 steps to join ph.d. in india.

Embarking on a Ph.D. journey in India is a significant academic and professional pursuit. Aspiring research scholars often have questions regarding the duration of a Ph.D., the associated costs, eligibility criteria, and recent developments in the field. In this comprehensive guide, ilovephd aims to address these queries and shed light on the essentials of pursuing a Ph.D. in India.

A Ph.D. program in India typically takes around 3 to 5 years to complete, depending on various factors such as the discipline, research area, individual progress, and university regulations.

The duration may vary, but it is important to be prepared for a substantial commitment of time and effort.

The cost of pursuing a Ph.D. in India varies across institutions. Generally, public universities offer Ph.D. programs with minimal or subsidized tuition fees. Private universities may have higher fees.

It’s advisable to explore funding options such as scholarships, fellowships, or research grants provided by government bodies, funding agencies , or individual institutions to support your Ph.D. journey.

To pursue a Ph.D. in India, a candidate typically needs a postgraduate degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field. It is important to note that specific eligibility criteria may vary between universities and disciplines.

Additionally, universities often require candidates to clear entrance exams or interviews and meet minimum academic standards to be considered for admission.

In most cases, there is no strict age limit for pursuing a Ph.D. in India. As long as you meet the eligibility criteria and demonstrate the necessary academic qualifications, you can pursue a Ph.D. at any age.

Therefore, 25 is certainly not too old to start a Ph.D. Many scholars begin their doctoral studies later in life, bringing valuable experiences and perspectives to their research.

While the National Eligibility Test (NET) is a common requirement for lectureships and research fellowships in India , it is not mandatory for all Ph.D. programs. Some universities may have their own entrance exams or selection processes.

It is important to check the specific requirements of the university or institution where you plan to pursue your Ph.D.

Direct Ph.D. admission is a pathway for exceptional candidates who have completed their undergraduate studies and wish to pursue a Ph.D. without a Master’s degree.

However, this option is typically available to a limited number of candidates, and universities may have specific criteria and guidelines for direct Ph.D. admissions. It is advisable to consult with individual institutions to understand their policies regarding direct Ph.D. admissions.

While a Master’s degree is generally the standard qualification for pursuing a Ph.D., some universities in India offer integrated Ph.D. programs that allow students to directly enter the Ph.D. track after completing their undergraduate studies.

However, this option may be limited to certain disciplines or institutions. It’s important to research and identify institutions that offer such programs if you wish to pursue a Ph.D. without a Master’s degree.

The rules and regulations for Ph.D. admissions in India are subject to change and can vary between universities and disciplines.

It is advisable to stay updated with the guidelines provided by individual universities and regulatory bodies such as the University Grants Commission (UGC) or the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to ensure compliance with the latest requirements.

25 tips to help you join a Ph.D. program in India:

  • Review eligibility criteria : Check the eligibility requirements of the institutions you are interested in, including minimum educational qualifications and entrance exam scores.
  • Prepare application documents: Gather the necessary documents, such as academic transcripts, recommendation letters, statement of purpose (SOP), and research proposal.
  • Prepare for entrance exams: If required, prepare for entrance exams like UGC-NET, GATE, or university-specific exams. Familiarize yourself with the syllabus and exam pattern.
  • Apply to institutions: Submit your applications to the shortlisted institutions within the specified deadlines. Pay attention to the required application fees and submission procedures.
  • Attend interviews (if applicable): Some institutions may conduct interviews or presentations to assess your research aptitude and fit for the program. Prepare well for these interactions.
  • Secure funding: Explore funding opportunities such as scholarships, fellowships, or research grants. Check if the institutions offer any financial support or external funding options.
  • Accept an offer : Once you receive acceptance letters from the institutions you applied to, carefully evaluate and select the most suitable offer based on research facilities, faculty expertise, funding, and overall fit.
  • Complete admission formalities: After accepting an offer, complete the necessary admission formalities as specified by the institution. This may include submitting additional documents, paying fees, and fulfilling any other requirements.

It’s important to note that the specific steps and procedures may vary between institutions. Therefore, always refer to the official websites and admission guidelines of the institutions you are applying to for accurate and up-to-date information.

Pursuing a Ph.D. in India is a rewarding and intellectually stimulating endeavor. Understanding the duration, costs, eligibility criteria, and recent developments is crucial to navigating the process effectively.

By considering these factors and conducting thorough research, aspiring Ph.D. scholars can embark on their academic journey with confidence and clarity.

Remember to reach out to universities or institutions directly for specific information and seek guidance from mentors or faculty members who can provide valuable insights into the Ph.D. application process in your chosen field. Good luck with your Ph.D. pursuit!

Students generally spend a little over four years to complete their Ph.D. which includes two years of rigorous course work.

Course work in the first year provides a general management overview and develops basic skills for analyzing managerial problems. In the second year, students take advanced Ph.D. level courses in their areas of high levels of specialization. After completing the course work, students have to pass an area comprehensive examination to demonstrate that they have reached a level of proficiency in the area of high levels of specialization.  The Ph.D. dissertation, for the next couple of years, provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of management or to one of its source disciplines. Students admitted to the Ph.D. Programme receive a comprehensive fellowship that covers all costs and in addition provides a modest living allowance.

Both these formats are not suited for everyone who wishes to do a PhD in India. For some people, especially working professionals, taking out time to attend classes is not possible. For them, a distance Ph.D. in India is the best option. Students don't have to participate in regular classes and lectures at the college/ university in this option. Most of the process is conducted online, and students only have to appear for semester examinations. The guidance for research is also carried out online, but students have to defend their academic thesis at the university/ college at the final submission.

So, if you have the dream of obtaining a PhD in India but cannot devote your time to attend regular classes, a distance PhD in India is your best option. You don't have to worry about the degree's value as it will be at par with the regular PhD degree in India. Keith-Spiegel, P., & Wiederman, M. W. (2000). The complete guide to graduate school admission: Psychology, counseling, and related professions . New York, NY: Psychology Press.

The duration, number of questions and weightage of the sections included in the admission test will also be released at this time. Candidates are requested to carefully go through the syllabus and prepare accordingly.

Names of the applicants accepted for admission will be uploaded on the PhD page of the program website (accepted and waitlisted etc.).

When the name of the candidate appears on the website as selected, the candidate has one month to accept or decline the admission offer. The program will consider an offer declined if we don’t hear back via email from the accepted applicant within one month. In case of a wait list, the program will then consider those applicants. Structure of the admission test

The test will have two sections. The first section is mandatory for all applicants. It will test their general aptitude, basic analytical skills, understanding of academic integrity and ethical practices in research, and statistical literacy.

Syllabus for the first section:

Numerical abilities: Grade 10 mathematics as per CBSE/ICSE/International school boards

Academic integrity and research ethics:  What is academic integrity and why is it required?

What is plagiarism (including self-plagiarism)? Citing, summarizing, paraphrasing and quoting others’ work. https://usingsources.fas.harvard.edu/

Responsible conduct of research: For any epidemiological/intervention based/ investigative/observational studies involving humans: http://www.who.int/ethics/research/en/

Statistics: Empirical methods in science, constructs and their operationalization into variables, continuous and discontinuous variables, scales, reliability and validity, frequencies, distributions, central tendencies:  Mean, median, mode; measures of dispersion; graphical representation of data;  correlation and covariance;  standard normal distribution; sampling error of the mean and standard error; hypothesis testing; Type I and Type II errors; t-tests; chi square test; ANOVA (all types, including post hoc tests and corrections); and regression (simple and multiple); non-parametric statistics; confidence intervals, power analysis, and effect size.

Rather than mathematical derivations and formulations, questions will test applied aspects of these statistical concepts. You will be tested on

  • Your  ability to interpret graphical data
  • Spot data inconsistencies and errors on graphical representations
  • Understanding of errors than compromise reliability and validity of a study
  • How to operationalize constructs into variables
  • What sort of experimental designs merit which kind of statistical tests to be applied

A good resource to prepare apart from any college level statistical course material: http://onlinestatbook.com/

Statistical skills involving latent variable modeling (in various forms), meta-analysis, and time series analysis will not be tested.

The second section will be grouped into five subsections out of which candidates will choose any three. Questions will be grouped according to the core domains in psychology: Biological, Developmental, Clinical, Social, Cognitive and Measurements and Methodologies. This section will follow the syllabus of the subject GRE test in psychology. Please use the following link to obtain the syllabus and sample questions.

https://www.ets.org/s/gre/pdf/practice_book_psych.pd f. The following textbook might provide a good starting point for preparation:

Passer, M. W., & Smith, R. E. (2004). Psychology: The science of mind and behavior (2nd ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill.

There are also several commercially available study guides which can help you prepare for this part of the test regardless of your academic background.

The PhD program will include academic and research training as well as ethical and career development training. The first two years (one year, in case of M.Phil./ M.Tech. entrants) will be heavily tilted to coursework and professional development and career planning workshops. Students need a minimum of 24 coursework credits to advance to PhD candidacy in year 3.   To maintain good academic standing in order to receive your fellowship, all PhD students are required to maintain a minimum GPA of 7.5 (i.e. A minimum grade of B- or above) for all coursework .

From third year onwards, gradually the research components will start to predominate, and years 4 and 5 will be more or less research centric. Three activities will be suggested for all PhD students through their tenure at the Department of Psychology at Ashoka University.

  • Psychology Journal Club: Every week a student will present a journal article. Attendance is mandatory for all PhD students. Senior students will present in the earlier part of the academic year for the newer entrants to learn from their peers
  • Graduate research seminar in Psychology: Every week two students will present their own research in front of the department. Attendance is mandatory for all PhD students and all faculty members are encouraged to attend the weekly GRS
  • Teaching assistantships: Each student will serve as graduate TAs in a course in consultation with the thesis advisor every semester starting from the beginning of second year. The particular arrangements will be worked out by the advisor and the department on a case by case basis.
  • Individual Development Plan(IDP): Every year, starting from the first year, students will submit an individual development plan to the PhD coordinator and the advisor by October 1 of every academic year. This will serve as a roadmap to the upcoming year for the student, and will be reviewed as part of their annual progress review. Further resources on how to think about an IDP is available online and some guidelines are provided below. The students will receive more guidance on this as they enroll in the program

Duration of the PhD program: For candidates with M.Phil or M. Tech, the duration of the PhD Fellowship is 4 years. For every other entrant, the duration of the PhD fellowship is 5 years. The PhD curriculum has been developed within this framework.

Major Milestones in the PhD program:

  • Qualifying exam at the end of year 2
  • Thesis proposal defense and advancing to candidacy year 3
  • Thesis defense at the end of year 5
  • If student/trainee is unable to clear the qualifying exam or the thesis proposal they will be asked to leave.

Elaborating the milestones briefly:

long distance phd in india

  • After the students have been selected for admission, they will actively correspond with the potential thesis advisors and finalize this by a process of mutual agreement. This should be completed as soon as possible but no later than July 1, 20xx for a September 20xx admission.
  • Familiarize yourself with the proposed project(s) you will be working on for the first two years of your PhD. One of these could potentially become your dissertation project.
  • Using the time between selection and enrollment, the prospective student is encouraged to think and formulate a plan for their tenure at Ashoka University. Sample but not exhaustive pointers to think about could be
  • What are your strengths? (academically, and non-academically) How will these strengths become complementary to your advisor’s expertise for the project(s) discussed?  How well do you fit in to the research group?
  • What are your weaknesses? (academically and non-academically). How can you improve yourself in these areas using the resources and the PhD experience at Ashoka University?
  • How well do you understand ethical issues for responsible conduct of research and academic integrity? If there are gaps, which areas do you need to address first?
  • What are your short term and long-term goals? How can the PhD Program at Ashoka University help you attain those?
  • What parallel skills can the program give you in addition to theoretical and technical expertise directly related to your PhD program?

All these will be essential in writing your Individual Development Plan (IDP) at the very beginning of year 1 and every subsequent years. This is a program requirement and cannot be waived for any student.

PhD by Distance Education in India 2024

PhD-by-distance-Education-in-India

Distance education has become a vital aspect of today’s world of education. It has become the most sought after avenue of raising your salary or increasing your qualification. Various distance courses are available across India in multiple levels such as:

  • Higher secondary
  • Undergraduate
  • Postgraduate
  • Certificate courses

When it comes to completing a course with other obligations in life, distance learning is the best option. PhD by distance education in India can be obtained by applying to colleges that offer distance education Doctor of Philosophy degree.

PhD in Distance Education in India

PhD through distance education is gaining importance among the research scholars who could not pursue higher studies due to work pressure or some other reasons. Many people have the wrong idea that distance education does not involve teachers, and students need not go to schools or colleges. The idea is wrong.

In distance education, a student need not be physically present in the classroom. However, he or she may have to attend daily classes on her laptop or mobile phone at a particular time. These classes are conducted online by experienced teachers or by electronic presentations that are made for a clear understanding of the subjects. So, it is wrong to say that distance education does not involve teachers.

PhD by Distance Education in India

Moreover, sometimes a student may need to attend classes on special days for particular reasons. Some of them may be:

  • Doubt clearing
  • Repetition of chapters already taught
  • Face to face interactions
  • Examination

The system of distance education that requires students to visit the school on particular days is called the Hybrid system of distance learning. It is a fact that most of the reputed universities in India offer only full-term and part-time PhD programs, but some universities like Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open Universities (YCMOU) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) still offer the PhD through distance education in India .

In the year 1840, England introduced uniform postage rates across the country. Sir Isaac Pitman, the pioneer of short-hand writing and stenography, took up this opportunity and started sending his courses to his students through mails. His mails contained exercises that were to be mailed back to him so that he could correct them. Thus the foundation of distance learning was laid, and the world was waiting to see a revolution in the field of education.

Later, important universities like the University of London started preaching through a distance correspondence course. The system chartered by the Queen herself had meritorious members coming from less affluent backgrounds to undergo further education and establish themselves in society.

Who Should Opt for PhD Through Distance Education in India?

Distance education has been changing lives for quite some years. Nowadays, even after a hard day of a full-time job, one can enjoy the comfort of his or her home and complete his Ph.D. course. PhD by distance education has broken the normal stereotype and has allowed different candidates coming from different backgrounds to opt for a Doctor of Philosophy, which seemed very far-fetched and difficult earlier.

Moreover, it has been noted that when a man enters his corporate life, he tends to move away from his studies due to workload. For a woman, it is widely seen as soon as she gets married and becomes a housewife; the burden of family life makes it difficult for her to continue her studies.

A working individual under no circumstances can attend daily classes in a university or a college. Moreover, most classes are during the morning, which also happens to be the peak working hour in most offices. However, a PhD candidate who is applying for a job will be paid more. Now, if a candidate has to earn more, he or she has to complete and upgrade his or her educational qualification. Thus, it is an absolute necessity for such candidates to complete their PhD through distance education .

These are some of the situations where distance education and acquiring degrees through distance education plays an important role. For a homemaker, receiving the correspondence study materials and studying them in her own free time can help her a lot in increasing her educational qualification and her value in society.

Additionally, if someone is physically challenged or terminally ill and is not being able to attend his or her classes daily can opt for completing his or her PhD degree through distance education. If there is will then there surely is a way and distance education is that way.

Is PhD Through Distance Education Affordable?

This is an absolute yes. PhD degrees obtained through distance education are very affordable. Moreover, the option of carrying on with your job while completing the course at the same time is a blessing. PhD gives you the comfort of your home and saves you the amount you used to spend on commute. As a result, a very important step in life can be taken at a very low cost.

Can anyone who desires to obtain a PhD, Get it?

The answer is yes. Given that you have the required marks in your graduation and masters, you can obtain PhD degree. Different universities and institutions offer PhD courses through correspondence. They have varying eligibility criteria and varied requirements which need to be fulfilled.

Ph.D. Distance Education Advantages

Distance learning, as the name suggests, saves time because it eliminates the need for commuting. This saves money and time that would otherwise be spent traveling back and forth.

Studying from any place – One does not have to live in the same city or country to attend the learning institution of one’s choice while pursuing Distance Education. It is possible to study from anywhere.

Comfort Level – Distance education gives a person a level of comfort that they would not have otherwise. Meanwhile, one can finish his or her chores. Some classrooms lack sufficient seating and other basic amenities, making learning difficult. When at home, one can sit wherever he or she wants.

Versatile – Distance Education provides students with unrivaled flexibility. People who, for example, are stay-at-home mothers, full-time workers, or military personnel may find it difficult to attend a regular institution. Many online education programs allow you to work at your own pace and schedule your studies around other obligations.

Many scholars are passionate about their subjects and want to invent or discover something that will make others’ lives easier while also bringing them recognition. The Ph.D. students devote their time to their research. Scholars teach others, earning respect and spreading quality knowledge. Once the Ph.D. is completed, students have numerous opportunities to earn a good living.

In India, PhD is a programme that has been designed for students who have already done their undergraduate and postgraduate training. As far as the overall structure of PhD is concerned, it is an advanced research qualification that consists of coursework and research work. The particular requirements to earn a PhD degree differs considerably according to the country, institution, and time period, from entry-level research degrees to higher doctorates.

The structure of a PhD programme involves pedagogy, coursework, qualifying exam, preparation of research proposal and thesis work. In each stage of the programme, the performance of the student is evaluated throughout all the semesters.

For PhD admissions, the majority of the universities/institutes conduct their own entrance examinations and also consider the GATE/ NET scores. Here is a list of some of the popular universities in India that offer PhD courses to the candidates:

The PhD Admission syllabus is determined by the stream chosen. The contents for the science stream are comparable to the CSIR NET Syllabus, while the topics for the other courses are similar to the UGC NET Syllabus. The syllabus for PhD studies varies depending on the specialisation in the field chosen by the candidates.

PhD programmes include both traditional academic classroom sessions and research projects. Admission to PhD programmes is heavily reliant on the research effort. A PhD course consists of course study, a qualifying examination, research proposal/abstract preparation, and thesis work.

The table below lists the names of various major disciplines that are offered in India for the candidates to pursue their PhD

Here are some preparation tips for PhD entrance exam preparation for PhD admission 2024 -

  • Students should gather past year PhD entrance exam question papers from reliable sources and study accordingly.
  • They must refer to the PhD entrance exam syllabus as per their specialisation.
  • The entrance exam format varies depending on the conducting body; therefore, the aspirants must be informed of the structure to plan accordingly.
  • They must cover all exam subjects at least one month before the exam.
  • To relieve exam stress, the students must take advantage of the various mock tests available.
  • Keeping up with current events is vital because they are essential for grades.
  • Visiting the exam centre a day before the exam to avoid last-minute confusion about where the exam centre location is advised.
  • Before the exam, students must get a good night's sleep.
