“I pounced on [Ms. Pat's] book. And I thought she did such a great job...God, [ Rabbit ] was entertaining. And I recommended it to so many people.” ― David Sedaris, author of the New York Times bestseller Calypso
"An absolute must-read" – Shondaland
“[ Rabbit ] tells how it went down with brutal honesty and outrageous humor” – New York Times
“I know a lot of people think they know what it’s like to grow up in the hood. Like maybe they watched a couple of seasons of The Wire and they got the shit all figured out. But TV doesn’t tell the whole story.” – Ms. Pat
They called her Rabbit.
Patricia Williams (aka Ms. Pat) was born and raised in Atlanta at the height of the crack epidemic. One of five children, Pat watched as her mother struggled to get by on charity, cons, and petty crimes. At age seven, Pat was taught to roll drunks for money. At twelve, she was targeted for sex by a man eight years her senior. By thirteen, she was pregnant. By fifteen, Pat was a mother of two.
Alone at sixteen, Pat was determined to make a better life for her children. But with no job skills and an eighth-grade education, her options were limited. She learned quickly that hustling and humor were the only tools she had to survive. Rabbit is an unflinching memoir of cinematic scope and unexpected humor. With wisdom and humor, Pat gives us a rare glimpse of what it’s really like to be a black mom in America.

About the author
Patricia williams.
Patricia Williams is a powerful comedian and author who brings an honest, in your face, and hilarious perspective to her work. Born to a single mother of 5, living on welfare in a tough West end neighborhood of Atlanta, Patricia learned early on she would have to fend for herself in this world. Her Grandfather ran a “bootleg” house where as a kid she learned how to roll the drunks for food money. She had her first child at 14 and her second child at 15. She became a drug dealer in her teens known by the street name “Rabbit”. At 19 years of age, with two toddlers and a new husband, she was handed 4 more young children from her sister who was struggling with drug addiction. With her husband’s help and encouragement, she finally decided to get out of the “life.”
While making regular visits to the welfare office for food stamps and Section 8 housing assistance, Patricia was first told she had a talent for telling funny stories. In 2003 with her case-worker’s encouragement she decided to go on stage and appeared at her first Open-Mic. From the moment she stepped on stage she knew she had found her place.
She has appeared on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” Comedy Central’s “This Is Not Happening,” TV Guide Network’s “Standup in Stilettos”, and Nickelodeons “Mom’s Night Out”. She is a regular guest on the syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show, and appeared on Katt Williams DVD “Kattpacalypse”. She has become a Podcast celebrity with appearances on WTF with Marc Maron, The Joe Rogan Experience, and the Bertcast with Bert Kreischer. Her autobiography Rabbit was published last year by Dey Street,
Patricia currently resides with her husband and three children in Indianapolis.

#OwnVoices: Rabbit: The Autobiography of Ms. Pat
- Thursday, June 23, 2022
“I was a grown woman before I found out black folks aren’t the only ones who have hard times. Everybody’s got a struggle. Nobody gets through this life easy.”-Patricia Williams
Growing up, I felt like I didn’t have a unique story to tell. I assumed that everyone had the same story and many of our experiences were the same. Now that I am older, I know better. So many of us grow up with trauma that is normalized. Many never learn how to heal and move past that trauma. Ms. Pat tells us her triumphant story, not sparing the dirty details. This is not a story for the faint of heart.
Reading Rabbit: The Autobiography of Ms. Pat made me laugh, made me cry, made me remember my own childhood traumas, and it made me proud of Patricia Williams – a woman I have never met. I don’t think many would survive half of what she went through. She was failed by family, failed by the education system, and failed by those whose mission it should have been to protect her. She had two kids by the age of 15. She was a drug dealer. She was abused. She was shot, twice. She took in her sister’s four children as her sister battled drug addiction. This isn’t even half of what Ms. Pat endured. Yet, she persevered!
This autobiography lets us know that we do not have to remain in our circumstance. If we want better, we can work to achieve better. It is OK to get help from others along the way. Her ultimate driving force was that she did not want her children to repeat the cycle that had been set by her family. She wanted better for them and better for herself. She evolved from Rabbit – her street name – to a beloved comedian known as Ms. Pat.
