Dyslexia: Some Manifestations and Techniques of Its Overcoming image

Worksheets designed specifically for 3-year-olds serve as an invaluable resource in the early stages of childhood development. These educational tools are tailored to meet the unique learning needs and abilities of toddlers, providing a structured yet engaging way to introduce basic concepts such as colors, shapes, numbers, and letters. The interactive nature of worksheets encourages young children to explore and learn at their own pace, fostering a sense of achievement and independence.

For 3-year-olds, who are naturally curious and eager to discover the world around them, worksheets offer a fun and stimulating way to channel their energy into productive learning experiences. They help develop fine motor skills as children learn to hold pencils, trace lines, and color within boundaries, preparing them not just for academic success, but for everyday tasks. Moreover, these activities support cognitive development, enhancing attention, memory, and problem-solving skills.

Incorporating worksheets into the daily routine of 3-year-olds also promotes the development of concentration and patience, as they learn to focus on completing tasks. This early introduction to structured learning paves the way for a smoother transition to more formal education settings in the future.

Ultimately, worksheets for 3-year-olds are more than just simple paper activities; they are stepping stones that build a solid foundation for lifelong learning and development.

A boy aged four or five plays intently with a smartphone at a table at home

Quarter of UK’s three- and four-year-olds own a smartphone, data shows

Campaigners express concern at new Ofcom figures, which also show that half of under-13s are on social media

A quarter of three- and four-year-olds in the UK now own a smartphone, while half of children under 13 are on social media, according to new data that comes as ministers consider banning all children under 16 from owning a mobile phone.

The figures, from the communications regulator Ofcom, show high and rising rates of online activity by children of infant-school age, with 38% of five- to seven-year-olds using social media, compared with 30% a year ago, and 76% of them using a tablet.

The findings will boost the argument of those close to Rishi Sunak who have been urging him to clamp down on phone and social media use by young children.

Ministers will launch a consultation on what measures to take within weeks, according to government sources.

The consultation will include a proposal to ban mobile phone sales to under-16s, one to make it easier for parents to put parental controls on devices, and one to raise the minimum age for social media sites from 13 to as high as 16. Ofcom also found that half of children aged three to 12 use at least one social media app, despite the minimum age requirement of 13.

Michelle Donelan, the technology secretary, said in a statement: “Children as young as five should not be accessing social media, and these stark findings show why our Online Safety Act is essential.

“Most platforms say they do not allow under-13s on to their sites, and the act will ensure companies enforce these limits or they could face massive fines. If they fail to comply with Ofcom decisions and keep children safe, their bosses could face prison.”

She added: “Protecting children online is our No 1 priority and we will not hesitate to build on the act to keep them safe.”

The figures come amid growing evidence of the impact of widespread social media use among children. The US government has warned that social media poses a “profound risk” to the mental health and wellbeing of children and teenagers, with the number of children and adolescents dealing with depression and anxiety having risen almost 30% in recent years.

Jonathan Haidt, a US academic whose book The Anxious Generation has been cited as influencing No 10’s thinking on children and social media, told the Guardian the mobile phone ownership figures were “very disturbing”. Ofcom research also showed around a quarter of five- to seven-year-olds owned a smartphone.

“Something must be done to reverse this trend,” said Haidt, a social psychologist at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He added that parents should work with schools to set a new norm: “Don’t give children a smartphone before the end of secondary education, around age 16.”

Child online safety campaigners also called on the government to act. The Molly Rose Foundation said Ofcom had to crack down on platforms that “turn a blind eye” to age requirements, while the NSPCC called for “robust enforcement” of the Online Safety Act, which has provisions on enforcing social media age limits.

Joe Ryrie, co-founder of the group Smartphone Free Childhood , said the statistics showed that social media and smartphone use “is a systemic problem and it’s only getting worse.”

Ofcom’s annual study of children’s online habits also found the proportion of five- to seven-year-olds sending messages or making voice and video calls had risen from 59% to 65% compared with a year ago. The number of children in that cohort using WhatsApp rose from 29% to 37% and the proportion using TikTok increased from 25% to 30%.

Overall, 96% of all children aged between three and 17 go online, with the vast majority of the 4% who are still offline being aged three or four. Even among that demographic – the youngest children surveyed – 84% use the internet.

Generally, younger children who are allowed online use a tablet, while secondary-school-age children are more likely to have a smartphone, with more than 95% of 12- to 15-year-olds being given their own mobile phone.

The smartphone figures were based on an Ofcom survey of 2,480 parents of children aged between three and 17. It defined a smartphone as a handset that allows individuals to easily download apps, view websites and generally go online.

Child, woman in critical condition in aftermath of Monroe County boat club crash

Monroe County Sheriff officials said Monday afternoon that two victims of the Swan Boat Club tragedy are in critical condition, including an 11-year-old boy and a 31-year-old woman, according to a news release.

Another three victims are in serious condition: a 14-year-old boy, 16-year-old girl, and an 18-year-old woman.

Officials also confirmed the names of the young siblings who were pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday, Alanah Phillips, 9, and Zayn Phillips, who was either 4 or 5, police have said.

The mother of the two dead siblings and their older brother were hospitalized, police said. According to an update on the family's GoFundMe page, Jayden went through surgery but is awake. His mother, Mariah, is also awake, the GoFundMe stated.

More: Decision on charges may come Tuesday in Monroe County boat club tragedy

A total of nine people were transported to area hospitals via ambulance or by air ambulance after the crash Saturday, the release stated. That included four other women who had minor injuries. A 42-year-old man sought treatment for minor injuries.

A 66-year-old suspect, who officials have not named as of Monday afternoon, is alleged to have slammed an SUV into the north wall of the Newport boat club, moving fast enough to go about 25 feet inside the building hosting a birthday party. She was arrested and taken to the Monroe County Jail on suspicion of driving while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony.

"The Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this incident to ensure we have identified all of those who were injured or witnessed this incident," the release said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at 734-240-7530.

Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffery Yorkey said in a Monday afternoon news release that he expects to make a charging decision Tuesday , but an official time and date had not yet been set.

Newport is located off Interstate 75 in Berlin Township, an area of about 10,000 residents.

Dave Reaume, Berlin Township’s supervisor, said the township had 17 volunteer firefighters respond to the crash, many who were parents themselves and were distraught.

“You never think something like this is going to happen in our quiet community,” Reaume said. “We just feel devastated for the family.”

P&g announces fiscal year 2024 third quarter results.

Net Sales +1%; Organic Sales +3%

Diluted EPS and Core EPS $1.52, each +11%

MAINTAINS FISCAL YEAR SALES AND CASH RETURN GUIDANCE

RAISES EPS GROWTH GUIDANCE

CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) reported third quarter fiscal year 2024 net sales of $20.2 billion, an increase of one percent versus the prior year. Organic sales, which excludes the impacts of foreign exchange and acquisitions and divestitures, increased three percent. Diluted net earnings per share were $1.52, an increase of 11% versus prior year.

Operating cash flow was $4.1 billion, and net earnings were $3.8 billion for the quarter. Adjusted free cash flow productivity was 87%, which is calculated as operating cash flow excluding capital spending, as a percentage of net earnings. The Company returned $3.3 billion of cash to shareowners via approximately $2.3 billion of dividend payments and $1 billion of share repurchases. The dividend increase declared earlier this month marks the 68th consecutive year that P&G has increased its dividend and the 134th consecutive year that P&G has paid a dividend since its incorporation in 1890.

“We delivered solid sales and strong earnings growth in the third quarter despite multiple headwinds, enabling us to raise our EPS growth guidance and maintain our top-line outlook for the fiscal year,” said Jon Moeller, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We remain committed to our integrated strategy of a focused product portfolio of daily use categories where performance drives brand choice, superiority — across product performance, packaging, brand communication, retail execution and consumer and customer value — productivity, constructive disruption and an agile and accountable organization. We are increasing investments in superiority to drive market growth and sustain strong momentum. We have confidence this remains the right strategy to deliver balanced growth and value creation.”

January - March Quarter Discussion

Net sales in the third quarter of fiscal year 2024 were $20.2 billion, a one percent increase versus the prior year. Organic sales, which exclude the impacts of foreign exchange and acquisitions and divestitures, increased three percent. The organic sales increase was driven by a three percent increase from higher pricing. Mix and volume had a neutral impact on sales for the quarter.

  • Beauty segment organic sales increased three percent versus year ago. Skin and Personal Care organic sales declined low single digits due to lower sales of the super-premium SK-II brand, partially offset by volume growth from innovation in Personal Care. Hair Care organic sales increased high single digits driven by increased pricing in Latin America, Europe and North America.
  • Grooming segment organic sales increased ten percent versus year ago driven primarily by higher pricing in Latin America and Europe. Volume growth was partially offset by unfavorable product mix.
  • Health Care segment organic sales increased two percent versus year ago. Oral Care organic sales increased mid-single digits due to premium product mix, partially offset by volume declines mainly in Asia Pacific and North America. Personal Health Care organic sales increased low single digits driven by increased pricing, partially offset by volume declines due to lower incidence of cough and cold.
  • Fabric and Home Care segment organic sales increased three percent versus year ago. Fabric Care organic sales increased low single digits due to increased pricing and favorable geographic mix due to growth in North America and Europe. Home Care organic sales increased high single digits due to increased pricing and volume growth from innovation.
  • Baby, Feminine and Family Care segment organic sales were unchanged versus year ago. Baby Care organic sales decreased mid-single digits due primarily to pricing-related volume declines, partially offset by favorable product mix and devaluation-related price increases. Feminine Care organic sales increased low single digits driven by increased pricing and favorable product mix, partially offset by pricing-related volume declines. Family Care organic sales increased low single digits due to volume growth, partially offset by unfavorable product mix.

Diluted net earnings per share increased by 11% to $1.52, driven by an increase in net sales and an increase in core operating margin. Currency-neutral EPS were up 18% versus the prior year EPS.

Reported gross margin for the quarter increased 300 basis points versus the prior year. Core gross margin for quarter increased 310 basis points and 400 basis points on a currency-neutral basis. The increase was driven by benefits of 260 basis points from gross productivity savings, 130 basis points of favorable commodity costs and 130 basis points from increased pricing. These were partially offset by 100 basis points of unfavorable gross margin product mix and 20 basis points of product reinvestments and other impacts.

Selling, general and administrative expense (SG&A) as a percentage of sales increased 210 basis points versus year ago and 170 basis points on a currency-neutral basis. The increase was driven by 330 basis points of reinvestments, partially offset by 60 basis points of productivity savings and 100 basis points of net sales growth leverage and other impacts.

Operating margin for the quarter increased 90 basis points versus the prior year, 220 basis points on a currency-neutral basis. Operating margin included gross productivity savings of 320 basis points.

Fiscal Year 2024 Guidance

P&G maintained its guidance range for fiscal 2024 all-in sales growth to be in the range of two to four percent versus the prior year. Foreign exchange is expected to be a headwind of approximately one to two percentage points to all-in sales growth. The Company also maintained its outlook for organic sales growth in the range of four to five percent.

P&G raised its fiscal 2024 diluted net earnings per share growth from a range of -1% to inline to a range of one to two percent versus fiscal 2023 EPS of $5.90. P&G also raised its fiscal 2024 core net earnings per share growth from a range of eight to nine percent to a range of 10% to 11% versus fiscal 2023 EPS.

P&G now expects unfavorable foreign exchange rates will be a headwind of approximately $600 million after tax. The Company expects the net impact of interest expense and interest income to be a headwind of approximately $100 million after tax. The Company now expects a benefit of approximately $900 million after tax from favorable commodity costs for fiscal year 2024.

The Company is unable to reconcile its forward-looking non-GAAP cash flow and tax rate measures without unreasonable efforts given the unpredictability of the timing and amounts of discrete items, such as acquisitions, divestitures, or impairments, which could significantly impact GAAP results.

P&G now expects a core effective tax rate of 20% to 21% in fiscal 2024.

Capital spending is estimated to be approximately 4% of fiscal 2024 net sales.

P&G continues to expect adjusted free cash flow productivity of 90% and expects to pay more than $9 billion in dividends and to repurchase $5 to $6 billion of common shares in fiscal 2024.

The Procter & Gamble Company

Exhibit 1: Non-GAAP Measures

The following provides definitions of the non-GAAP measures used in Procter & Gamble's April 19, 2024 earnings release and the reconciliation to the most closely related GAAP measures. We believe that these measures provide useful perspective on underlying business trends (i.e., trends excluding non-recurring or unusual items) and results and provide a supplemental measure of period-to-period results. The non-GAAP measures described below are used by management in making operating decisions, allocating financial resources and for business strategy purposes. These measures may be useful to investors, as they provide supplemental information about business performance and provide investors a view of our business results through the eyes of management. Certain of these measures are also used to evaluate senior management and are a factor in determining their at-risk compensation. These non-GAAP measures are not intended to be considered by the user in place of the related GAAP measures but rather as supplemental information to our business results. These non-GAAP measures may not be the same as similar measures used by other companies due to possible differences in method and in the items or events being adjusted. The Company is not able to reconcile its forward-looking non-GAAP cash flow and tax rate measures because the Company cannot predict the timing and amounts of discrete items such as acquisition and divestitures, which could significantly impact GAAP results.

The Core earnings measures included in the following reconciliation tables refer to the equivalent GAAP measures adjusted as applicable for the following items:

  • Incremental restructuring : The Company has historically had an ongoing level of restructuring activities of approximately $250 - $500 million before tax. On December 5, 2023, the Company announced a limited market portfolio restructuring of its business operations, primarily in certain Enterprise Markets, including Argentina and Nigeria. The adjustment to Core earnings includes the restructuring charges that exceed the normal, recurring level of restructuring charges.
  • Intangible asset impairment : The Company recognized in the three months ended December 31, 2023, a non-cash, after-tax impairment charge of $1.0 billion ($1.3 billion before tax) to adjust the carrying value of the Gillette intangible asset acquired as part of the Company's 2005 acquisition of The Gillette Company.

We do not view the above items to be part of our sustainable results, and their exclusion from core earnings measures provides a more comparable measure of year-on-year results. These items are also excluded when evaluating senior management in determining their at-risk compensation.

Organic sales growth : Organic sales growth is a non-GAAP measure of sales growth excluding the impacts of acquisitions and divestitures and foreign exchange from year-over-year comparisons. We believe this measure provides investors with a supplemental understanding of underlying sales trends by providing sales growth on a consistent basis. This measure is used in assessing the achievement of management goals for at-risk compensation.

Core EPS and Currency-neutral EPS: Core earnings per share, or Core EPS, is a measure of diluted net earnings per common share (diluted EPS) adjusted for items as indicated. Currency-neutral EPS is a measure of the Company's Core EPS excluding the incremental current year impact of foreign exchange. Management views these non-GAAP measures as useful supplemental measures of Company performance over time.

Core gross margin and Currency-neutral Core gross margin : Core gross margin is a measure of the Company's gross margin adjusted for items as indicated. Currency-neutral Core gross margin is a measure of the Company's Core gross margin excluding the incremental current year impact of foreign exchange. Management believes these non-GAAP measures provide a supplemental perspective to the Company’s operating efficiency over time.

Core selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expense as a percentage of sales and Currency-neutral Core SG&A expense as a percentage of sales : Core SG&A expense as a percentage of sales is a measure of the Company's selling, general and administrative expense as a percentage of net sales adjusted for items as indicated. Currency-neutral Core SG&A expense as a percentage of sales is a measure of the Company's Core selling, general and administrative expense as a percentage of net sales excluding the incremental current year impact of foreign exchange. Management believes these non-GAAP measures provide a supplemental perspective to the Company's operating efficiency over time.

Core operating margin and Currency-neutral Core operating margin : Core operating margin is a measure of the Company's operating margin adjusted for items as indicated. Currency-neutral Core operating margin is a measure of the Company's Core operating margin excluding the incremental current year impact of foreign exchange. Management believes these non-GAAP measures provide a supplemental perspective to the Company’s operating efficiency over time.

Adjusted free cash flow : Adjusted free cash flow is defined as operating cash flow less capital expenditures. Adjusted free cash flow represents the cash that the Company is able to generate after taking into account planned maintenance and asset expansion. We view adjusted free cash flow as an important measure because it is one factor used in determining the amount of cash available for dividends, share repurchases, acquisitions and other discretionary investments.

Adjusted free cash flow productivity : Adjusted free cash flow productivity is defined as the ratio of adjusted free cash flow to net earnings excluding the Gillette intangible asset impairment charge. We view adjusted free cash flow productivity as a useful measure to help investors understand P&G’s ability to generate cash. Adjusted free cash flow productivity is used by management in making operating decisions, in allocating financial resources and for budget planning purposes. This measure is also used in assessing the achievement of management goals for at-risk compensation.

Coding is now an essential life skill

Coding is one of the most useful, career-and-income-boosting skill sets one can have in 2024.

According to data from BLS (the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), although the employment projection for computer programmers specifically was demonstrated to be decreasing by 11% in 2022, up to 2032, today's reality is the opposite. According to LinkedIn Learning, "programmers are in higher demand today than ever before."

The job outlook for software developers and others who use code as a fundamental aspect of their role has surged to 25%. This is much faster than the average for occupational growth rates in the U.S.

Coding is a fantastic skill to learn for the following reasons:

Learning to code builds other essential "soft" skills, such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, and logical thinking. You learn to break down complex problems into smaller steps and tasks.

Additionally, undertaking a coding course empowers you to bring your unique entrepreneurial ideas to life, even if you're not specifically interested in tech. You might have a product idea, but without the technical knowhow, or having someone working with you who has the knowhow, your product will not come to life, even as an MVP.

Last but not least, completing a coding course empowers you with the foundation for skills for in-demand, high-paying roles such as software development, app development, web development, and cybersecurity.

You can jumpstart your career with any of these five free coding courses:

1. Codeacademy

Codacademy has a basic free package which allows you to learn coding and tech skills, such as HTML or Python, at your own pace. They of course, have affordable upgrade options.

2. LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning, previously known as "Lynda," offers a plethora of courses aimed at helping you improve your confidence and skills for the workforce. One great way to start is by following LinkedIn Learning's learning path , "Becoming a Programmer: Foundations."

Currently (at the time of writing), LinkedIn is offering a range of courses totally free until May 15. You can also look at free courses through LinkedIn Learning by opting in for a free 30-day trial-period. And of course, if you already have a premium LinkedIn subscription, you don't need to worry about paying anything extra to complete the course.

Once a LinkedIn Learning course is complete, you can add the certificate to your profile, thus attracting the attention of employers.

3. Project-Based Learning On GitHub

GitHub has a range of project-based learning activities and tutorials, which are incredibly useful if you find yourself to be more of a hands-on learner. The tutorials are categorized into primary programming languages, although some may use more than one.

4. Programming With A Purpose—Princeton University

Princeton's Computer Science: Programming With A Purpose course is available on Coursera for free if you meet the financial criteria, and is also suitable for beginners, with many users on the platform stating that it was a great introductory course to learn programming fundamentals.

5. Crash Course On Python—Google

Google has teamed up with Coursera to offer a crash course for learning the Python programming language, and this is also well recommended and suitable for your career goals if you are starting at the beginner level. This course, unlike some others, comes with a certificate.

Learning to code places you at a significant career and entrepreneurial advantage

Today, accept the challenge and master a new programming language. Learning to code might be difficult initially, especially if you come from a non-technical background, but it will enrich your career and help you to become financially independent.

Ranking the Top Three Prospects For Rams to Draft in First Round

Ranking the Top Three Prospects For Rams to Draft in First Round

The Rams have plenty of options to work with this year in the draft.

  • Author: Matt Levine

In this story:

The Los Angeles Rams sit with pick No. 19 in the first round of the NFL Draft later this week, giving them plenty of options to work with. Los Angeles could make a selection for the first time since 2016 or they could look to net extra draft capital by trading back or out of the round.

Whatever the team does, they need to bring in some good, young talent on defense to help ease the transition of Aaron Donald's retirement. After making the postseason last year, the Rams are now looking to build for the future and bring sustained success to the organization.

Assuming that the Rams don't move out of the first round, here are the three best prospects that the team should look into drafting.

3. Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson

The Rams did sign a few guys to be placeholders for this season in free agency but they need more of a long-term solution in the secondary. Wiggins could be that guy for them, giving them a corner bursting with speed.

Wiggins has all the tools to be a successful corner in this league, even with his slender frame. His athleticism stands out when watching tape and the Rams could use his fiery competitive spirit as well.

2. Darius Robinson, DT, Missouri

When looking at replacements for Donald, Robinson takes home the prize. While he isn't Donald, nor is anyone, he could really help them replace some of the lost production.

Robinson is a massive human being and could easily help them tackle some of their issues in stopping the run. He is a physical presence, who never gives up on a play. Head coach Sean McVay would love him and could help him grow into a special player along the defensive front.

1. Laiatu Latu, EDGE, UCLA

The reason that Latu is ranked first here over Robinson is that the Rams could use another pass rusher to get to the quarterback. Latu posted 13 sacks over 12 games last season, showing a strong ability to do just that.

Los Angeles also has Kobie Turner already on the roster, giving them a strong defensive tackle already. But adding someone like Latu to the mix with him and opposing defenses may fear for their lives.
