All Papua New Guinea tourist visas can be applied for online. That means all PNG tourist visas are e-Visas. In this article, when I use the term e-Visa, I’m referring to the tourist visa that can be obtained online.

The Easy Visitor Permit allows stays for either 30 or 60 days depending on nationality. The Visitor Visa also comes in 2 subtypes: for own itinerary tourists and visitors on packaged tours.

A COVID-19 medical clearance certificate, also known as a COVID-19 health certificate or COVID-19 test result, is a document that confirms an individual's COVID-19 status based on a medical test. This certificate is often required for international travel or for entry into certain countries or venues during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Here are some key points to know about COVID-19 medical clearance certificates:

  • 1, Purpose: The certificate is intended to demonstrate that an individual has tested negative for COVID-19 or has met specific health criteria to be considered safe to travel or enter a specific location.
  • 2, Testing: The most common type of test used for COVID-19 clearance is the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. This test detects the presence of the virus's genetic material and is considered highly accurate. Other tests, such as antigen tests or antibody tests, may be accepted in certain situations or locations.
  • 3, Timing: The timing of the test is crucial. Most countries and travel destinations require the test to be conducted within a specific time frame before departure or arrival. The time window can vary, but it is typically within 72 to 96 hours before travel.
  • 4, Validity: The validity of a COVID-19 medical clearance certificate is often limited, usually ranging from 48 to 96 hours from the time the test was taken. It's essential to check the specific requirements of the destination or airline to ensure compliance.
  • 5, Certification and Documentation: The certificate should be issued by a recognized and authorized medical facility or laboratory. It typically includes the individual's name, date of birth, test date, type of test conducted, and the result (negative/positive). Some certificates may include additional information, such as the laboratory's details or a unique identification number.
  • 6, Requirements and Regulations: COVID-19 clearance requirements and regulations can vary between countries and even within different regions of the same country. It's crucial to stay updated on the specific requirements of your destination by checking official government websites or consulting with your airline or travel agent.
  • 7, Additional Measures: It's important to note that a COVID-19 medical clearance certificate does not exempt individuals from following other health and safety measures, such as wearing masks, practicing physical distancing, or complying with quarantine or testing protocols upon arrival at their destination.

Always refer to the official guidelines and requirements provided by relevant authorities, such as government health departments or immigration agencies, to ensure you have the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 medical clearance certificates for your specific travel needs.

Tourist visas on arrival in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are now available for Australian passport holders for stays of up to 30 days and at no charge. For other visits, a visa is still required for entry into PNG unless the visitor holds an APEC business travel card.

Since 1 March 2014, Australian passport holders cannot:

  • Obtain Business - i) Short term & ii) Restricted Employment Facility (REF) visas on arrival at any port in Papua New Guinea
  • Be granted Uplift Letters for assistance of the aforementioned visas on arrival at any port of entry in PNG.
  • Australian passport holders still have to obtain visas at the nearest Papua New Guinea Overseas mission/post in Australia (or at an Australian mission/post abroad where there is no PNG Government representation). PNG’s current missions/posts in Australia are located in Canberra, Sydney, and Brisbane

To obtain a business visa, a sponsorship letter from the company you are visiting is standard. Austrade Port Moresby can provide such a support letter, especially if you are visiting Papua New Guinea for the first time.

Refer to the schedule on the PNG Government site for the visa fee structure introduced by PNG Immigration effective 1 October 2013.

There is 12 months validity from date of first entry, 60 days stay validity per visit and employment is prohibited. An extension for stays beyond 60 days is permitted on payment of K1000, which applies for each visa.

cover letter for png visa

Hi there. It says on the website that one of the documents required is a covid medical clearance certificate. Did anyone apply for a visa recently? Are they still asking for that or a proof of vaccination is enough?

23 replies to this topic

cover letter for png visa

you need the following additional documents - hi quality photos are accepted

Copy of Passport Bio page

Corona Virus Medical Clearance Certificate - NHS vaccination certificate

Cover Letter - (purpose, visit site, accommand contact details)

Evidence Of Funds - recent bank statement (redacted for privacy and security is OK)

Complete Corona Virus Supplementary Heath Form - download from their website, print and fill out

"Corona Virus Medical Clearance Certificate - NHS vaccination certificate"

Oh so, the medical clearance is not in fact clearance from a doctor that I don't have any symptoms?

Have you applied for a visa recently or now someone that had, and they accepted just the vaccination cert.?

Thank you very much for your answer and apologies for further questions, I'm just trying to do it right when I apply for a visa!

yes the medical clearence certificate is just your vaccination schedule - we have applied for and got e-visa using our NHS certificates

Thats great news!

I'm gonna bother you with another question: how do I go about the cover letter? We gonna be traveling around the country for a month with no fixed itinerary. Do we need to find a png citizen to write a letter or?

dont worry so much, just say you want to visit as a tourists and list the places you plan to go

Oh ok. Simpler than I though :D. Will do that! Once again thanks for your help!

Have not been vaccinated but have certified proof of having long-term antibodies after recovering from Covid-19. Will this satisfy the visa?

you have to try and see - it is a medical clearence cert they need not specifically a vax cert so it could work

A question on the covid certificate, PNG have lifted all Covid restrictions on 6th October 2022, including the need to be vaccinated, has anyone applied for a visa without being vaccinated, was it granted?

Thanks in advance!

Had no trouble entering PNG without proof of vaccination. I did provide a statement from my pharmacy stating I had the long term antibodies after having had Covid

Requests for Expedited Visa Appointments

If no appointments are available on our appointment scheduling website, complete the Expedited Visa Appointment Request Form to request an emergency appointment. Completion of this form does not guarantee that we will be able to accommodate your request.

Step 1: Check the Validity of your Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States, unless exempt by country-specific agreements.  If it isn’t, you must get a new passport before applying for a visa.

Step 2: Complete the Visa Application

Complete the Online Non-immigrant Visa Application,  Form DS-160 (https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/) . Please note the following additional points:

  • You must answer EVERY question on the application form. If the answer to a question is “none,” please write “none” (do not leave it blank.) Incomplete/incorrect forms will be returned and will require you to schedule a new interview appointment.
  • There is no cost to fill out the DS-160 form. You do not need the services of a company or third-party to fill out the form for you, and no company or third party is able to guarantee your visa issuance or expedite your visa appointment or processing.

Step 3: Collect any Supporting Documentation

The only documents required for a nonimmigrant visa interview are:

  • DS-160 Confirmation Page
  • 2×2 inch (5×5 cm) photo taken within the last 6 months, with a white background
  • For F, M, and J visa applicants only: I-20 or DS-2019 and proof of SEVIS payment, if required
  • For H, L, or R visa applicants only: I-797 Approval Notice

Additional documents may be requested to establish if you are qualified. For example, additional requested documents may include evidence of:

  • The purpose of your trip;
  • Your intent to depart the United States after your trip; and/or
  • Your ability to pay all costs of the trip.

Note: Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of the applicant’s residence and ties abroad, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a nonimmigrant tourist visa. If you do choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember that it is not one of the factors that we use in determining whether to issue or deny a nonimmigrant tourist visa.

Step 4: Schedule an Interview Appointment, if required

To schedule an appointment for a non-immigrant visa (NIV) interview, please consult the Embassy’s online  NIV Appointment System . Please have your DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application Form confirmation number handy. It is located on your DS-160 confirmation page, in bold print.

Some visas can be issued or renewed without an interview. To determine whether an interview is required in your case, please refer to the Interview Waiver/Visa Application or Renewal by Mail information .

Step 5: Visa Fee Payment and Interview

Come to the embassy on the date and time of your appointment. Upon arrival at the embassy main entrance, line up at your appointment time and prepare to show your identification. Note that electronic devices are not allowed. Please only bring necessary materials for your appointment (documents listed in Step 3).

During your visa interview, a consular officer will determine whether you are qualified to receive a visa, and if so, which visa category is appropriate based on your purpose of travel. You will need to establish that you meet the requirements under U.S. law to receive the category of visa for which you are applying. Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans will be taken as part of your application process, during your interview with the Consular officer.

You will pay the appropriate visa fee at the Embassy at the beginning of your appointment.  Please note we do not accept credit cards for visa fee payments; you must bring cash or a bank/cashier check (no personal checks). Fees can be paid in U.S. dollars or Papua New Guinea kina.

The cost of the visa fee depends on the visa class for which you are applying. For details, refer to  travel.state.gov .

The current visa processing fees are:

  • USD185 – B1/B2, F, J and non-petition -based visas
  • USD205 – H, L, O, P, Q and R category visas
  • USD315 – E3 category visa

Some visa types may include additional fees, such as L-1 and H-1B. Further, citizens of certain countries may be required to pay a reciprocity fee if the Consular officer approves your visa. More information on reciprocity fees can be found  here .

Visitor visas valid for 12 months with multiple entry are option only for qualified short-term business visa (B-1) applicants for an additional fee. As of April 17, 2024, 12-month, multiple entry visas are no longer available for tourist visa (B-2) applicants.  Please see the revised visa reciprocity schedule on travel.state.gov  for more information.

Step 6: Return to Collect your Passport and Visa

If your visa is approved, you can normally return to the Embassy the following workday after 9:00 am to collect your passport and visa. The Embassy will send you an email or call you when your visa is ready for pick-up.

You may send a third-party to collect your visa and passport on your behalf. Please provide a signed letter naming the authorized person who may retrieve your documents.

Note:   You should never pay for travel arrangements (e.g., airfare, hotels) without having a visa in your possession.  The U.S. Embassy accepts no responsibility if you do so. You risk significant financial losses if you ignore this advice.

A Sample Cover Letter for Tourist Visa and How to Create One

By Alice Ross | PASSPORT & VISA

  • PASSPORT & VISA » A Sample Cover Letter for Tourist Visa and How to Create One

a sample cover letter

If you're planning to  travel abroad , in many cases you will need to obtain a visa beforehand. The requirements vary according to your country of origin and your destination. But for a lot of people, the process to be granted a visa can seem daunting and unclear. In this article, we share important tips about visas to equip you with the knowledge to prepare for your international trip. Read on to find out more about how tourist visas work, including a very useful sample cover letter for your tourist visa application.

What Exactly Is a Tourist Visa?

A tourist visa or visitor visa is an official document that allows you to get in another country. In general, you are likely to need one every time you visit another country. However, this depends on which country you are from and where you are going, as some countries have agreements that allow entrance even without it.

A tourist visa may take different forms: it can be a paper document, although it most often comes as a simple stamp in your passport . Some countries require you to arrange your visa before arriving in the country, while others issue it to you once you land at the airport.

A tourist visa indicates how long you are allowed to stay in the country. It also defines which activities you are allowed to participate in or not while there, such as working and studying.

Other Types of Visas

how long is a passport good for

A tourist visa is the most common and most acquired type of visa. It is usually only valid for a short period of time, commonly ranging from a few weeks to a couple of months.

This is what you will need if you are just planning to visit the country. A tourist visa however doesn't allow you to work and study while you are in a particular country.

Others types of visas include student visas, business visas, media visas, fiancé visas , and many others depending on the place you're travelling to.

Resident visas are also available for those who want to live in a particular country. You will normally need a valid reason to obtain this type of visa, as they tend to be the most difficult to get.

What You Need to Apply for a Tourist Visa

As mentioned above, tourist visa requirements vary with your nationality and your destination, as well as where you make your application. You should always check the instructions application to your specific situation on the relevant embassy or consulate website. Having said that, there are some general requirements and common documents that are needed for most tourist visa applications.

These include:

  • Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the intended period of stay
  • Duly filled out visa application forms
  • Confirmed round-trip tickets
  • Cover letter for tourist visa or letter to the consulate

Top tip: travel insurance for your visa application

Most tourist visa applications require you to show proof of travel insurance coverage for the duration of your trip. We use and recommend SafetyWing as our preferred travel medical insurance provider. It's the most flexible and affordable we've found, starting at just $1.32 per day. They can also provide a visa letter to support your application. If you're looking for more comprehensive coverage, World Nomads is also a reliable and very popular alternative among global travelers. Note: In our experience and to the best of our knowledge, these two travel insurance options fulfill the requirements for most tourist visa applications. However, please make sure to check that they meet the specific criteria applicable to your individual case.

The cover letter or letter to the consulate is necessary for tourist visas that require interviews. This letter needs to explain why you want to visit the country and where you will be staying in the country. It must also outline the intended dates and duration of your stay.

Moreover, this letter is your way to tell the embassy if you are getting a sponsorship from a friend, parents, or a romantic partner who are currently based in that country. It's important to take your time to write your cover letter, although you should also make sure to keep it to-the-point and not too long.

If the trip is going to be  sponsored by someone else , make sure to include the following details in the cover letter for your tourist visa application:

  • The name of the person who is going to sponsor your trip
  • The job or source of income of the person who is going to sponsor you
  • Your proof or relationship (normally pictures)
  • Proof of financial capability of your sponsor

The cover letter is a really important document to provide before your trip. It states every important thing you want to tell the embassy or consulate. Make sure that it mentions and explains every document you've submitted.

To give you a better insight into how to create a cover letter for your visa application, here is a sample cover letter for a tourist visa needed to enter a country:

TO THE HONORABLE CONSUL

EMBASSY OF (Country you're visiting)

<Address of the Consulate>

Dear Sir/Madam:

I, <Your full legal name> would like to apply for a tourist visa to spend a vacation in <name of the country> from <date of arrival> to <date of departure.>

My main purpose for travel is tourism, to see the beautiful sights of  <name of the country> , particularly <name of tourist attractions.> I'm also looking forward to experiencing the culture, tasting the cuisine, and meeting locals to experience everything the country has to offer.

I am employed at <name of the company> located in <location of the company> since <date you were employed> and am currently holding the position of <your job position.> Vacation from work has already been approved for the whole duration of this trip.

During my trip, my <your relationship with the sponsor> <full name of the sponsor,>  who works as <job title of the sponsor> at <place of employment> will sponsor my trip. He/she will cover my accommodations, food expenses, and plane tickets.

Please find the following documents to support the legitimacy of what is outlined in this letter:

  • Passports (including old ones if applicable)
  • Application form, duly dated and signed with passport-size picture
  • Employment and leave certificates showing the date I'm expected to return to work
  • Payslips, tax report, credit card statements, bank certificate & statement of account as proof of income
  • Plane ticket booking reservation
  • Hotel booking reservation as proof of accommodation directly faxed to the embassy
  • Travel insurance with benefits

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you require any further information. I may not be available at all times due to my working schedule or I might be engaged in a mission, but you may still try to reach me at the following:

Of course, the sample cover letter for tourist visa application provided above is only a template and can be modified according to your situation. Again, including this in your travel visa application is very important, so make sure that you take the time to think about what you want to write and to gather all the necessary documents to support the information you provide in your letter.
