With a blindfold across her eyes, Lady Justice represents the objectivity of the justice system. In a generation where the gender pay gap persists and minorities face discrimination decades after the introduction of equalities legislation, I wonder whether perhaps an all-seeing symbol would be more appropriate.

"Eve was Framed" by Helen Kennedy explores the bias against women in our justice system. She discusses the battle to even allow women to be involved in legal processes as senior members of the legal profession in a society where sexism was the norm and the idea of a woman in a court seemed to be at best a gesture of liberalism, but commonly accepted as a radical notion. It allowed me to appreciate how stereotypes are perpetuated by those who seek to exploit the weaknesses in our laws and legal system.

Ultimately I began to reflect upon the relationship between the law, liberal ideas and religion. I drew parallels to today's society and the more liberal ideals that are emerging, especially those that contradict major religions, such as laws regarding surrogacy. It is these scenarios which capture my interest in law and how it can reconcile the apparent dichotomy between them, as well as adapt to an ever changing society.

Competing in the Magistrates Mock Trials stimulated my interest in law as I was able to act out a case (albeit as the defendant!) as part of a national winning team of students. I subsequently shadowed barristers at St Ives Chambers, learning how to analyse cases from personal injury claims to family disputes.

I found one particular case of stalking eye-opening due to the requirement for harassment to have occurred several times before a prosecution is possible, making me question how our laws could be improved.

In Year 12, I took part in the Bar Mock Trials Competition, this time assuming the role of lawyer for the prosecution. This sharpened my analytical skills to assess a situation quickly and to create an appropriate response when having to cross-examine witnesses.

Performing at the Old Bailey and watching other teams gave me an insight into how the same case can result in different outcomes, depending on the performances of the those involved. Though not surprising given the subjective nature of the law and its interpretations and applications, it does make me question its fairness and ability to truly provide justice.

My EPQ investigates the extent to which the Hillsborough inquests have challenged the integrity of the justice system, providing valuable research skills required for any degree. Reading "Hillsborough - The Truth" helped to widen my understanding of the disaster, providing harrowing accounts of the day and subsequent injustices faced by the families.

Initially it seemed that this gross miscarriage of justice challenged the very morals justice is built upon, but further research revealed that perhaps its main causes and effects were the inexperience of officers and a lack of planning. Indeed, it seems that the recent verdict of unlawful killing may be an example of justice prevailing.

What I found most challenging was differentiating between a negative aspect of the justice system and a problem in legal processes. In this instance it was not the principles of the justice system that led to the initial incorrect verdicts and the long fight for justice, but the faults in other parts of the processes, such as flawed coroner reports and amended statements.

As well as being engrossed in my studies, I participate in Taekwondo and have done for the past ten years, an activity which has taught me discipline and commitment, as well as providing a release from my academic life.

Being appointed Deputy Head Girl has developed my public speaking skills with my part time job as a tutor enabling me to hone my communication skills, having to cater for children aged six to sixteen. I believe these skills will be an asset in dealing with the rigours of reading for a degree in Law.

Oxbridge personal statement example for economics course.

I volunteer at a local soup kitchen in Singapore, where I help distribute food and check on the well-being of lower-income families living in public housing.

One day, we encountered a family of five who were all seriously or terminally ill but were not receiving any government social support and had been relying mostly on NGOs for assistance.

This experience highlighted a social issue that concerns me – the lack of adequate social security support in Singapore despite its economic strength.

I believe more attention should be paid to addressing poverty and inequality.

I volunteered at the soup kitchen not only to help those in need but also to understand their struggles, as their interests are often overlooked.

As an economics student, I have learned how well-informed economic policy can improve lives by guiding social analysis.

This subject excites me and has motivated me to learn more through books, volunteering, and participating in economics-related competitions.

For example, I received a distinction award in the National Economics and Financial Management Quiz, which tests quick thinking, logical, and mathematical skills.

I also submitted an essay for the GlaxoSmithKline-Economic Development Board Book Prize on how Singapore can capitalize on Asian talent as a source of growth.

In addition, I participated in the local Math Olympiad received a bronze award, and completed a month-long internship at Centennial Asia Advisors, where my work contributed to the analysis of the Great Recession and the process of purchasing bonds to address the crisis.

This experience gave me a greater understanding of the importance of economic policy and its application.

I am also actively working to make a difference. Along with a group of friends and an NGO, I am committed to helping the village of Tom in Cambodia escape poverty by building schools and providing water filtration devices for villagers.

We also plan to support children with scholarships through fund-raisers. Personally helping Tom overcome poverty is one of my goals, and I believe that a strong understanding of economics will be essential in achieving this.

In addition to my academic and volunteer pursuits, I have also participated in various activities that have helped me grow as a person.

For example, I participated in The Odyssey of The Mind, a competition that challenges teams to think creatively through dramatic performances.

Our team won the World Championship after competing against teams from 60 other countries.

I am also an avid sailor, having represented my school as captain and Singapore in international competitions.

What I value most from these experiences are the relationships I formed with my teammates and the importance of dedication and perseverance in achieving success.

At school, I helped start the Young Diplomats’ Society, an interest group focused on Model United Nations Conferences (MUNC).

I have always been drawn to the fields of law and justice. Even as a child, I was fascinated by the concepts of right and wrong and how they were applied in society.

What is Oxbridge?

Oxbridge is the collective name given to the colleges that form the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, which are regarded as the oldest and most famous higher education institutions in the UK. They also appear highly in UK and international rankings of leading universities.

Oxford has 30 undergraduate colleges, while Cambridge has 29. Each college differs in size, population and location. Some are single-sex colleges and others are mixed.

Oxford Law and Cambridge Law Entry Requirements

While many UK universities may offer you a conditional offer based on specific skills, extracurricular talents or work experience, Oxford and Cambridge place a high emphasis on your academic ability.

University of Oxford Entry Requirements

To secure a conditional offer for an undergraduate law course at Oxford, you will need a minimum of three A grades at A-Level, or 38 (including core points) with 666 at Higher Level in the International Baccalaureate. You will also need to sit the LNAT exam. You can prepare for the LNAT by using our free, online LNAT Practice Test.

University of Cambridge Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for an undergraduate law course at Cambridge include a minimum of one A* grade at A-Level and two additional A grades, or 40 – 42 points, with 776 at Higher Level in the International Baccalaureate.

In previous years, you would have had to sit the Cambridge Law Test as an additional entry requirement to study law. However, as of Cambridge University’s Autumn 2022 admissions cycle for 2023 entry, BA Law applicants will no longer be required to take the Cambridge Law Test. Instead, all applicants will be required to sit the LNAT.

How to Apply to Oxbridge

To apply for an undergraduate law course at Oxbridge, you have to choose between studying at the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge. You can’t apply to both in the same year.

You will need to submit your application through UCAS before the deadline, which is usually in October for both Oxford and Cambridge. To support your UCAS application, you will need to provide an attention grabbing personal statement to make yourself stand out in the eyes of admissions tutors.

If you are applying for a postgraduate course, the application process is different. Rather than applying through UCAS, you will need to apply directly to either Oxford or Cambridge, but be aware that application deadlines may vary between courses.

Oxbridge Application Key Stages

• Choose your law course – Find the Oxford or Cambridge law course you want to study and check that it covers law modules that you are interested in.
• Choose an Oxbridge college – Choose which of Oxford or Cambridge’s prestigious colleges you would like to study at. If you have no preference, make an ‘open’ application.
• Apply through UCAS – The deadline for Oxford law and Cambridge law applications is different to the standard UCAS deadline. You must submit your application by October.
• Additional university forms – You will be required to complete one or a series of additional forms as part of your application.
• Entry tests – In addition to your application and personal statement, you will need to sit the LNAT exam as part of Oxford and Cambridge entry requirements.
• Written work – If you are invited to the next round of the selection process following the submission of your application you may be asked to submit a written essay.
• Interview – If your application is shortlisted, you will be invited to attend an interview, which usually takes place in December.
• Decision – By January, you will know if you have been accepted into the Cambridge or Oxford law faculty.

Oxbridge Interviews

If you make it to the interview stage at Oxford or Cambridge, you will be invited to attend one, two or more interviews at your chosen college. This is your chance to shine and add strength to your UCAS application and personal statement by demonstrating your motivation and commitment to the legal profession in person, while also showing your skills and aptitude for law.

For law degree interviews, you don’t need to have prior legal knowledge, but your ability to think critically will be under observation. The purpose of the interview process at Oxbridge is to see how you approach problems, not to determine whether answers that you give are right or wrong. There are usually no right or wrong answers to the questions asked by interviewers.

Instead, your thinking process will be assessed. You can think aloud, and talk your interviewers through your considerations and conclusions.

As part of the process, you might be asked to sit a written exam on the day of your interview, which could be a theoretical legal essay or a problem solving question.

Using Oxford University’s interview process as an example, here’s a typical question that you could be asked as part of a written exam, taken from St Anne’s College:

Should it be illegal to run a red light in the middle of the night on an empty road?

What is your view and why?

Oxbridge interview questions tend to replicate the style of question asked in a tutorial. Oxford and Cambridge both adopt a tutorial teaching system, so interview questions are designed to assess whether you are suited to their tutorial system. Tutors want to know how you think and whether you would learn well in their educational environment.

Does Oxbridge Offer Funding For Law Courses?

Oxford University has a dedicated Student Support Fund available to assist UK students who may need financial support based on a range of circumstances. If you have a financial shortfall or you need to meet additional exceptional costs once you have started your law course, you can apply for non-repayable supplementary funding.

Cambridge University has a dedicated, non-repayable Bursary Scheme for UK undergraduates. Bursaries of up to £3,500 are available to students with a household income of up to £62,215. Students with lower household incomes will receive more.

Funding is also available from:

• Faculty awards and grants – Some faculties and departments may offer funds, grants and/or prizes for students in recognition of academic achievement.
• College awards – Additional funding may be available from your Cambridge college, including:
• Book and equipment grants
• Scholarships and prizes for academic achievements
• Travel grants
• Grants and loans for unforeseen financial circumstances
• Supplementary bursaries to cover living costs

Law Personal Statement – Academic Interests

Law personal statement – showcasing your academic interests and affiliations.

Law is an academic discipline, so you’ll spend a lot of time reading, writing, and analysing as a law student. While tutors do not expect you to be an expert in academic reading and writing, it is vital to demonstrate some interest in and efforts at academic reading and writing outside of the school curriculum. There are a few things you may do to check this box, including…

• Read some law books that aren’t part of the educational curriculum.
• Take a look at some scholarly publications and journals.
• Enter a competition for academic essays.
• Fill out an EPQ
• Participate in an intellectual debate tournament.

Try to think about what new skills you learned from these situations and offer a personal viewpoint on your experience.

I recently finished my EPQ on “The Law’s Role in Gender Equality.” In the EPQ, I looked into the role of the law in promoting gender equality. My final grade was 34 out of 50.

This student shows some indications of academic writing, but makes no attempt to exhibit their ability to analyse or reflect on the work, nor does he or she appear to be really engaged in it. Reading this, a tutor would be worried that the student would struggle to complete equivalent work as a law student pursuing a law degree.

I opted to write an EPQ on “The Law’s Role in Gender Equality” after reading and being troubled by an article about the persistent persistence of gender inequality in the UK. I investigated the extent to which the law can and should modify gender inequality behaviour, concluding that, while only society can bring about true change, it is the job of the law to prescribe such behaviour through strong and practical norms.

This student appears to be really enthusiastic about their academic writing. Furthermore, by thinking on and commenting on their writing and summarising their ideas, kids demonstrate their ability to evaluate and reach intriguing conclusions.

Best advice: think outside the box!

There are no precise topic or activity requirements in a law school personal statement, despite the fact that there are several items that are commonly addressed. This provides you with the opportunity to be resourceful and creative. Maybe your professional experience has nothing to do with the legal field? No issue, come up with a strategy to reflect on the abilities you’ve gained and how they’ll aid you as a law student. Or maybe you don’t like reading books? Reading articles, newspapers, films, and podcasts are all good options. Academic activities can include a wide range of activities as long as they employ academic abilities (such as critical thinking, writing, and research).

Summary of Academic Interests in law: Personal Statement

Academics should account for a significant percentage of your personal statement for law school. Instead of merely showing your grade, go above and beyond the curriculum to showcase the breadth of your work by detailing the arguments you made and the topics you covered.

AT&T notifies users of data breach and resets millions of passcodes

AT&T said it has begun notifying millions of customers about the theft of personal data recently discovered online.

The telecommunications giant said Saturday that a dataset found on the “dark web” contains information such as Social Security numbers for about 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and 65.4 million former account holders.

The company said it has already reset the passcodes of current users and will be communicating with account holders whose sensitive personal information was compromised.

It is not known if the data “originated from AT&T or one of its vendors,” the company said in a statement. The compromised data is from 2019 or earlier and does not appear to include financial information or call history, it said. In addition to passcodes and Social Security numbers, it may include email and mailing addresses, phone numbers and birth dates.

While the data surfaced on a hacking forum nearly two weeks ago, it closely resembles a similar data breach that surfaced in 2021 but which AT&T never acknowledged, said cybersecurity researcher Troy Hunt .

“If they assess this and they made the wrong call on it, and we’ve had a course of years pass without them being able to notify impacted customers,” then it’s likely the company will soon face class action lawsuits, said Hunt, founder of an Australia-based website for warning people when their personal information has been exposed.

An AT&T spokesperson didn’t immediately return a request for comment Saturday.

It is not the first crisis this year for the Dallas-based company. An outage in February temporarily knocked out cellphone service for thousands of U.S. users. AT&T at the time blamed the incident on a technical coding error, not a malicious attack.

Oregon governor signs drug re-criminalization bill, reversing voter ballot measure

O regon Gov. Tina Kotek signed legislation on Monday re-criminalizing the possession of certain drugs, roughly three years after the state  became the first in the nation  to decriminalize the possession and personal use of all drugs, the Democratic governor’s office told CNN.

House Bill 4002 – which overwhelmingly cleared both chambers of the state legislature with bipartisan support – reverses portions of Measure 110, a 2020 voter ballot initiative that relaxed certain penalties for drug possession.

Under the new law, offenders could face up to six months in jail, or, in place of criminal penalties, elect to undergo drug treatment. The penalties for unlawful drug possession will take effect September 1.

In a letter obtained by CNN from the governor to the state’s legislative leaders, Kotek focused on provisions of the law that can prevent jail time for defendants.

“House Bill 4002 provides three pathways to avoid incarceration for individuals who possess small amounts of a controlled substance by encouraging pre-arrest deflection, providing conditional discharge upon criminal justice interaction, and pursuing formal probation,” Kotek wrote.

She added that a law enforcement focus on options other than incarceration “is one strategy to reduce collateral consequences of justice system involvement and can help mitigate the racial and ethnic disparities this legislation is projected to create.”

In January, Kotek joined local officials in declaring a  fentanyl state of emergency  in downtown Portland.

“Our country and our state have never seen a drug this deadly and addictive, and all are grappling with how to respond,” she said in a news release, vowing “unprecedented collaboration and focused resources” ahead of a “roadmap for next steps.”

Opioid deaths in Oregon  tripled between 2019 and 2022 , with many of the deaths attributed to the  rise in fentanyl , a potent synthetic opioid.

In 2020, Oregon voters moved to decriminalize various hard drugs – including fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine – when  Measure 110  was approved with 58.5% of the vote. It  took effect  in February 2021.

Today, we are looking through a Law applicant’s Personal Statement that helped secure a place at Cambridge University. The Law Course at Cambridge allows you to understand law in its historical and social contexts, and to examine its general principles and techniques.

Law Personal Statement

Law is the epitome of human reason; it is the force that holds society together and the cornerstone on which great civilizations were built upon. By dictating a code of conduct which everyone had to abide by, it has created a system of accountability and allowed society to flourish. However, Law is never static. It changes with time – internalising new concepts and discarding anachronistic ones to reflect societal norms. It is this dynamic nature of the Law that I find so enthralling – that there exists a gamut of good answers but never a right one. Such idealism aside, I believe excellence in legal study and work does not come easy. It requires much passion, intellect and hard work.

At College, I offered 12 academic units (as compared to the standard 10 academic units) at the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Examinations. Concurrently, I represented Singapore in Swimming and was an active member of my College’s Swimming and Cross-Country team, training up to six times each week and achieving numerous medals and accolades in Inter-College Competitions. Such excellence in both sports and academics demonstrates my strong self-discipline, time management skills as well as my capacity for sustained hard work.

As a student, I heId numerous leadership positions such as Swimming Captain, School Prefect as well as being part of the Executive Committee of my College Freshman Orientation Camp. In addition, I undertook various community-based service projects aimed at spreading awareness on and massaging the plight of the less-privileged in society. These experiences in positions of influence and leadership have strengthened my organisational and problem-solving skills, teamwork as well as allowed me to develop effective communication skills.

For my ability to balance studies, sports and leadership roles, I was among the ten students (out of nine hundred) on my College’s prestigious Principal’s Honour Roll in 2011 that acknowledged distinguished academic achievement and outstanding contributions to the College. Though challenging as it might have been, I have benefited greatly from my overall College experience and would certainly look forward to continue to represent, contribute and excel in University.

During my National Service stint, I served as a Military Officer entrusted with the responsibility of leading and nurturing the next generation of soldiers. Besides leading soldiers out in the field, I had to handle soldiers from a myriad of backgrounds as well as run the general day to day administration of the battalion. I have had multiple opportunities to serve as a Defending Officer to servicemen (who were accused of various wrongdoings) in military courts as well as conduct investigations into various malpractices in my battalion. These unique and far-reaching dealings in the Army has reaffirmed my decision to pursue law, refined my ability to think critically and to work under significant constraints and duress.

I am a firm believer in the importance of reading and see it as an avenue for the pursuit of knowledge. I read on a wide range of topics including legal conundrums, science, philosophy and even military tactics as I believe sufficient breath of thought is needed to develop one’s mental prowess. Through such extensive reading, I have honed my rigour of thought and widened my perspectives to a myriad of issues.

A career in law is diverse and dynamic, yet fraught with many challenges. Legal theory, evidence, clientele management and not to mention regularly navigating the bureaucratic quagmire; no other field is as challenging or multi-faceted as the field of law. Though arduous, I relish the intellectual challenges of legal study and aspire to ensure human rationale and justice continues to prevail in society. Thus, I believe I possess the necessary attributes needed for legal study and excellence in the field of law.

Good Points Of The Personal Statement

The personal statement is well-written with no obvious errors. The student opens with quite a conceptual statement of what law means to them and this helps to make the subject seem like a well thought through choice. Additionally, the student recognises that law is a difficult and challenging course but seems unafraid of the need to put the necessary effort into it. The conclusion is similar in this respect, tying back to the introductory thoughts and ending on a strong statement of why the student feels like they would be a strong candidate to study law at university. Moreover, the student gives a very capable impression by mentioning their place on the College’s Honour Roll, as it suggests they can balance their extra-curricular activities with (and not to the detriment of) their academic studies well.

Bad Points Of The Personal Statement

Structurally, this statement needs to be reorganised. The student’s legal interests are given attention and evidence far too late with extra-curricular activities of limited relevance being introduced closer to the beginning. In a personal statement as part of a law application, Law needs to be the primary focus throughout. The student’s positions of responsibility also come above their academic, legal interests, when they should be given less focus and come later on in the statement. When talking about the skills they developed in relation to these activities, the student makes these developed attributes sound beneficial but does not explicitly tie them to law or why they are useful to the study of law. It takes until the penultimate paragraph for the student to talk openly about their academic interests, and even then, they do not illustrate this with any specific legal examples.

UniAdmissions Overall Score:

The personal statement is good but could be easily improved. The student would benefit from reordering the structure of the content to open with legal or academic interests, and then saving less relevant extra-curricular activities till the end. Any activity or skill should be tied back to law wherever possible – giving specific examples of how they relate would also be helpful in getting across why the student is prepared to study law at university.
