Our Academic Departments for finding a thesis topic

Finding a topic and supervisor for your final thesis is an essential part of your degree program. There are several ways to achieve this goal:

  • Apply for an advertised topic at a chair. To make the process easier, please find the contact information, requirements for supervising a thesis and available topics of each chair of TUM School of Management by following the links below.
  • Develop your own topic based on your interests and classes and proactively contact a potential supervisor from a chair in a related research area. For this purpose, please familiarize yourself with the requirements for supervision of the chair.
  • Pitch a work-related topic offered by a company to a potential supervisor at a chair in a related research area.
  • Plan to do your thesis abroad.

Last, but not least, we recommend to check the provided information sheets in our Download Center and the module description of the final thesis. We wish you the best of luck!

Thesis Guideline

Thesis Guideline

Phase 0: finding a topic and application.

  • Topic selection
  • Look at our available topics for Bachelor’s Thesis, Master’s Thesis, Project Studies, or IDP at the Chair for Strategy and Organization
  • Choose your own topic

In case you want to apply with your own topic, directly proceed to the application. However, make sure that the topic is aligned with our research.

  • Application
  • Application for a topic offered by the CSO

Please send your complete application as described on the respective offer page to the contact person stated. Usually, this includes your CV and a current transcript of records . If required, also include a tentative research idea (exposé) including the research question, hypotheses, data, methods, and possible outcomes with a tentative outline.

  • Application with your own topic

Please send the application to a supervisor that fits your research idea. Include your CV and a current transcript of records as well as an exposé with the tentative research idea, including the research question, hypotheses, data, methods, possible outcomes, and a tentative outline. Please note that your proposed topic should be in line with one of the research topics of the CSO. Inform yourself and integrate a clear argument on why your topic fits with the CSO in your exposé.

Further information can be found in the guidelines on how to write a research proposal:

  • Acceptance / Rejection

We will usually come back to you within 2 weeks. If you do not hear anything, please kindly remind us of your outstanding application by email.

Phase 1: Registration

  • Once your application is approved, your supervisor will send you the link to the application form. We will then register you in the online portal of the TUM School of Management. By filling out the application form, you accept the ❗ Non-Disclosure Agreement .
  • The official thesis registration  is approved by grade management  - not by our chair - it will take up to four weeks. If you have not received a confirmation after two months, please briefly contact Mrs. Eva Pongracz ( [email protected] ). However, you can already start working on it!

Phase 2: Writing the thesis

Thesis seminar.

It is compulsory for all students to study the materials in the thesis seminar of our chair when writing your thesis here. If you have questions beyond the provided material, you can attend the monthly Q&A sessions.

No registration is necessary for the thesis seminar as you will not receive extra ECTS credits Furthermore, no attendance is required for the Q&A sessions and you do not need to present your thesis.

You can find all information about the thesis seminar here:

Regular updates to your supervisor

In our team and in collaborations, we highly value conscientiousness, autonomy, and proactivity. Please send regular (about once per month) updates per email which concisely and shortly summarize the following points:

  • what are you working on right now
  • are you within your predefined timeline
  • what challenges do you face at the moment
  • what will you be working on until the next update
  • questions that only your supervisor can answer

As a format we suggest attaching a PowerPoint presentation or Notion page so that we can effectively make comments.

Important milestones for updates are typically the following:

  • Topic definition (if not specified through predefined topics)
  • After you have read and know the literature:
  • summary of what we already know about this topic
  • what we don’t know about this topic and why it would be important to know
  • your research question
  • Your research model and empirical approach (that is: how do you want to answer your research question) . If you work (quantitative) empirical, your research model, hypotheses, and empirical approach.
  • Your results and conclusions

For all other questions, please ask them in the Q&A sessions of our  thesis seminar .

Formatting guidelines

Being able to format your thesis according to the given specifications is an important skill. Therefore, we will not provide you with a word template or similar. Here are our guidelines:

Our chair’s general rule is that it is not forbidden to use AI within your thesis – but: AI is an aid you are using and therefore you have to label for what you used AI. Please cite the AI in your text and clarify in the Appendix of your work, how you got that result from the AI (e.g., by sharing the link to your chat with ChatGPT or by sharing the prompts you used and the outcome the AI generated). But when you plan to use AI, please talk to your supervisor, if he/she allows that and if he/she wants a different documentation of your AI usage than stated here - your supervisors specifications are deciding if and how you can use AI.

Formal Requirements :

We would like to point out that in the background of the general internationalization of science and the economy, we highly recommend you write your thesis in English. Check with your supervisor if a German thesis is possible in your case.

  • Most important information regarding the format and layout is included in the official guidelines of our chair and the thesis guidelines.
  • Use the font style Times New Roman (font size 12) for the text. Write with a line spacing of 2.0. All margins should be 1 inch.

You should use the citation guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA) in your thesis. You can access the APA Publication Manual in the library.

  • Master thesis 50 (+/- 10%) pages of written text (not including tables, cover sheet, references, graphs, pictures, and appendix).

Following APA, a table of content is not necessary. However, we ask you to include a table of contents in your final thesis.

The thesis begins with a cover sheet, followed by an abstract, which is followed by your actual text. After the text follow the references, figures and tables and then possibly the appendix. At the very end you should attach your declaration of authorship. Current samples for the cover page and declaration of authorship can be found in the download

FINAL THESIS AT THE CHAIR OF PSYCHOLOGY (BACHELOR/ MASTER)

Are you interested in psychology and looking for an exciting topic for your final thesis ( bachelor/master )? Then apply to the Chair of Psychology! We offer an open and constructive work atmosphere in a young, dynamic, and international team.

We conduct both basic and applied research on the intersection of motivational, industrial, and organizational psychology. Here, we deal with questions regarding implicit and explicit motives, volition (willpower), intrinsic motivation, flow experiences, action regulation, (romantic) workplace relationships, and transformational leadership.

APPLICATION PROCESS

bachelor thesis tum school of management

STEP 1: Find your topic and supervisor

Check out all ongoing research projects at the Chair by inspecting each team member’s profile and research interests. Our  team page  can help you in finding the right supervisor with the right topic!

STEP 2: Prepare your application documents and contact us

If you already have a topic for your thesis in mind or are interested in a particular research area offered, please send an email directly to the team member involved in this research field.  Please note:  Your email should include a few setences on your motivation  ("what made you apply?"), how you fulfill the hard criteria stated under "WHAT WE EXPECT" as well as your CV and  transcript of records (one PDF). We will get in touch with you as soon as possible!

STEP 3: "Meet & Greet" with your potential supervisor

Depending on the team member’s capacity, she/he will either send you a rejection email or schedule a “Meet & Greet”-appointment in which you receive more information on her/his research field and the Chair’s thesis procedure. Please note:  In preparation for the meeting, thoroughly read our guidelines and policies made on final theses at the Chair of Psychology (see here ). Since we now encourage manuscript-style theses instead of "classical" theses, some parts might be obsolet (ask your potential supervisor!). However, the document still provides you with a good overview!

STEP 4: Agreement on the topic and type of your thesis

After you have spent some time reading on the topic(s) that aroused your interest, you will meet again with your supervisor and agree not only on your thesis topic but also on the type of thesis (empirical/theoretical and manuscript-style or classic).

STEP 5: Write a short proposal

Before registering your thesis, we want you to write a short thesis proposal of max. 3 pages (see here  for more information). In it, you will refine your research question, build the thesis structure, and organize/schedule milestones for your research work in the form of a timeline. It will also serve as a “contract” for the thesis content after you have registered for your thesis in the next step.

STEP 6: Registration of your thesis

In the last step, your supervisor officially registers your thesis at the Examination Office. Once your thesis is registered, you must submit your bachelor’s/master’s thesis within the next 3/6 months. Please note:  Please read, sign, and send the following  declaration  to your supervisor via email. In case of manuscript-style theses, please read, sign, and send the following additional document .

Final theses

Application Process

To apply for a thesis, please send the following information to Aida Cehajic ( [email protected] ):

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Current Transcript of Records
  • A preference list indicating your preferred research area in one of our  competence fields

In the case of applying for a bachelor or master thesis please include Bachelor thesis - Application or  Master thesis - Application  in the subject. Please refrain from preliminary inquiries and always send all the documents listed above.

We do not explicitly post current topics of bachelor's and master's theses on the webpage. If you are interested in writing a thesis at the chair, please send us your preference list (see above). We will try to find a topic that fits your interests. A list of exemplary topics from the past can be found here .

Note:  If you want to work on a self-selected topic or if you want to write your thesis in cooperation with an industry partner, you are asked to hand in a short two-pager with a thesis proposal. This proposal should (at least) (i) define the research question, (ii) indicate the data and methodology to be used and (iii) discuss the related literature.

NOTE: New bachelor's theses will start in September 2024. The application deadline is September 20, 2024. Please send your application to [email protected] .  After the registration is confirmed, the students will be invited to an info session, where the supervisor will provide all the details regarding the topic. The info session will take place in October 2024.

Afterwards, new bachelor theses will only be available as of February 2025. In the meantime, you can apply on a rolling basis since in exceptional cases, there might be topics available to be supervised individually.

Who can apply?

All students that have passed the course Corporate Finance can apply for bachelor theses.

For master's theses, students must have a specialization in "Finance & Accounting" from the Master in Management and Technology (TUM-BWL), or Finance and Information Management (FIM) degree program or should have passed two of the following four courses: Asset Management, Derivatives, International Capital Markets and Investment Practice or Advanced Seminar Finance & Accounting . If the grade of any of these courses is not in your transcript yet, please include it in the email body. In exceptional cases, students who passed only one of the four courses can apply for a master thesis at the department  (i.e., students should then explain why they could not pass two of these courses or demonstrate that they passed comparable courses). We will then see whether we can find a suitable topic for you.

Additional requirements

It is expected that all students writing their bachelor or master thesis at our Chair visit our Finance Research Seminar  series. In this way, the students can familiarize themselves more with the current state of research in their respective fields.

  • Bachelor: 3 months

Thesis work at the Production and Supply Chain Management group is an intensive study of a scientific topic. You can work with theory and methods, often in close collaboration with partners from industry. The thesis is usually based on quantitative models and is written in English. The topic of the thesis should be one of the research priorities and areas of interest of the chair.

The duration of the thesis work is six months for a Master thesis, and three months for a Bachelor thesis. This applies for the program Management & Technology. Students from other programs have to check the rules at their department.

Open Projects: We are always looking for good students who would like to join our group. We offer thesis assignments related to our current research projects. An overview can be found here .

Requirements: We are looking for students that have a particular interest in Operations & Supply Chain Management (OSCM) and thus have participated in several lectures and seminars within this field. It is also required that students have taken the course “ Modeling, Optimization and Simulation in Operations Management ” (6 Credits) before starting their thesis.

Application: If you are interested in doing a thesis (Bachelor or Master) at our group, then please send an e-mail (in English) to  [email protected]  with the following information:

  • Transcript of records ( Bachelor and Master )
  • Preferred starting time
  • Description of the topic
  • Application form (only for Master thesis applications)

If you don't have a topic, it is also possible to find a topic for you. Please send us then a short description of the field of research or industry you are interested in. If you have any questions, please send an email to  [email protected]

Please note: Since we have a high load of ongoing theses, we will favor students who have already conducted their project study/seminar at our chair. You may only apply at one group of the OSCM department (see list below) at a time. However, you can indicate your alternative preferences in the application form.

Chair of Logistics and Supply Chain Management Chair of Operations Management Chair of Operations Research Chair of Production and Supply Chain Management Assistant Professorship of Operations and Supply Chain Management

Guidelines: Guidelines for how to write a thesis (Bachelor, Master) are available here . You are required to use the following  LaTeX template or Word template .

Please make sure to check all formal requirements of the TUM School of Management with regard to writing, formatting and submitting your final theses. An information sheet can be found in the Downloads section of the School of Management.

Registration of the thesis to the TUM School of Management administration:  Following an approval of a topic at the group, the thesis needs to be accepted by the TUM School of Management administration. Registration is as follows: 1) Fill out the registration form that applies to you ( available here ) with your information (Thema, Anmeldedatum, Abgabedatum, Betreuer, Name, Vorname, Matrikelnummer, Studiensemester). 2) Send the application form by e-mail to your supervisor review. 3) If your supervisor confirms the information, then you print out the form, sign it and send it to the secretary of our group ( monika.wagner(at)tum.de ). We will then forward the application to the examinations office.

Final Thesis

Students working on their final thesis for graduation should show and improve their ability to work on a recent, scientific, or practice-oriented research topic.

Requirements

For Bachelor Theses we highly recommend the successful participation in Empirical Research Methods and Technology and Innovation Management: Introduction.

For Master Theses we highly recommend the successful participation in Empirical Research Methods in Management and Economics and one of our Advanced Seminars.

Application

There are two ways to write your final thesis at our chair:

Research Proposal

In case you intend to write a thesis on a self-selected topic at our chair, we further require you to submit a proposal. This proposal should be about 1-2 pages (single-spaced), and clearly specify (1) your research question, (2) how this research question ties into an ongoing academic debate, (3) how, for this debate, your question is at least to some degree novel, interesting, and relevant, and (4) how you plan to answer your research question. Accordingly, we expect to see engagement with academic literature already in the proposal.

You will find further instructions on how to write a proposal in this document ( Link ).

We accept both empirical and conceptual theses, but please note that the amount of work will be approximately the same for both. Even if you want to focus on a topic particularly relevant for practitioners your thesis needs to have a sound theoretical basis and must fulfill the requirements of a scientific thesis. Please note accordingly that you cannot submit a practice-only topic, e.g., a business plan, as your thesis.

Topic Areas for self-selected topics

Please make sure that your self-selected topic fits to one of our team members‘ research areas. You find further information about each one’s research interests in the “ About Us – Team section ” of our homepage.

If you suggest an own topic, please provide a research proposal .

Open Topics

Please find a list of open topics below. Follow the link for detailed information. If you are interested in one of the topics, please directly contact the respective supervisor and send a brief description (half a page) how you would tackle the respective topic.

Currently no topics available.

  • Analyzing the Patterns of Smartphone Innovation

NOTE:  We publish all available topics on this page as soon as they become available. Please refrain from further inquiries -- emails asking about open topics will not be answered.

Please do not contact us for preliminary requests without sending your complete application. The final decision regarding theses at out chair are made only based on complete applications.

Applications for a final thesis at the Chair of Technology and Innovation Management can be submitted at any time. Every two months we will review the applications and assign supervisors to successful applicants. The application deadlines are therefore as follows:

In case you have questions concerning open topics, please contact the potential advisor named in the topic description directly. In case you have questions concerning the application process please contact Pietro Fantini .

  • Bachelor thesis: 3 months
