We opted for the rollercoaster ride, although it rose great fear and excitement in us. It was as majestic as it was fearful.

Once into it, we realized how beautiful the company was. We were thrilled with joy and enjoyed all the water rides with extreme fun. The summer heat no longer felt tormenting us as the mirth filled the air. After completing the rides we changed our dresses and quickly visited the dance p[platform. We enjoyed each other’s company and forgot the passage of time. Happiness, like bubbles, brewed up till we returned back and parted our ways. 

Visiting a water park that day was not any show of our sophisticated taste. But it was god’s grace that all our long-lost friends got reunited. Those lost memories were once again relived and cherished as if it was anew. I still can feel the happiness of that day and will never forget this wonderful memory.

Everyone needs to take a break from the crazy pace of NYC lifestyle, once in a while. When I ask myself where the best place to do that is, I do not have to think for more than a second. My favorite spot in the NYC is Van Cortlandt Park , with its long paved trails that I so much like to ride on my bike, passing jungles of trees and bushes so wild that they make you believe you have escaped the city completely and are somewhere in the middle of a real rich forest. I love its ample, spacious green valleys that remind me of those gorgeous Scottish hills you can sometimes see in movies, with white, puffy dots of sheep, and lonely, chunky trees. I adore the impetuous, dashing stream of the Tibbets Brook, and the contrasting calm and breathless pacifying waters of the Van Cortlandt lake.

Last week, I made my annual escape to the park. I was alone, did not take my bike this time, only my camera and my five senses, which was all I needed to enjoy a day away from work, buzz, and crowds. I first went to the Parade Ground, watched as a couple of cricket players run back and forth in their crisp, white mantles that sparkled in the sun. The players were like those sheep in the Scottish hills, only whiter and much faster. Not wanting to get burned in the bright morning sun rays, I quickly moved on to reach my destination—the meadow grass plot in the middle of the oak forest. I had spotted at this location before, and promised myself to go there again.

As I moved through the dense forest of the park, I pushed away the ample fluffy branches that came my way, trying not to hurt any of the big flat leaves, or neat, perfect acorns that covered each branch. Wanting to be closer to nature, I decided not to take the pathway but, instead, go directly through the forest. It was as if there was no sign of civilization around me. The oak trees were my favorite, with their wide, strong, mossy trunks and tender, roundish leaves. The air was still wet from the early morning shower—while everywhere, in the open, it had already been dry and hot, as if there had not been no shower. The shadows of the forest still preserved the humidity, intensified by the smell of wet moss and last year’s leaves that still laid on the ground. I loved this deep moist air, saturated with oxygen and filled with freshness.

As I was moving through the forest, a couple of times I came across little glades with no trees. They were intensely lit by the rays of the summer sun, like small islands of happiness, not enough to make me too hot from the fullness of sunlight, but enough to bathe my face and arms in their warmth. And when it got too hot, I could again dive into the pool of fresh, moist greens of the forest to appreciate the shadows of the generous old oaks. I stopped a few times, took my camera out, and captured the play of the light and shadow, spellbound by nature’s simple beauty that we tend not to notice, looking for chic and glam instead.

A half an hour later, I was at my destination point. The valley lay right in the middle of the park, between the forest and the lake, thoughtfully muffled by nature, protected from the inner noises and fuss. There were a couple of people already sitting on the grass, picnicking, reading, laying down dreaming. Even though I was not alone on the meadow this time, I appreciated this fact: I could observe the people merge and coalesce with nature in this somewhat Utopian picture of a perfect idyll.

Compare and contrast "In the Park" with the traditional sonnet form.

The sonnet is a poetic form that has been popular since the sixteenth century. “In the Park” shares many features with the traditional, historically established sonnet. It follows the fourteen-line structure of the sonnet and contains a regular rhyme scheme (ABBA, ABBA, ABCABC). It also focuses on a single theme or thought, which is characteristic of the traditional sonnet. In this case, “In the Park” focuses on the theme of the isolation of motherhood.

Traditionally, however, a sonnet is a romantic poem that celebrates its subject matter. For example, a traditional sonnet may have celebrated the beauty of a day in the park or described the joys of motherhood. “In The Park” inverts this traditional subject matter by critiquing rather than celebrating the confinement of women in society to roles as mothers and in the domestic sphere. The poem also does not follow the rhyme scheme of a traditional Petrarchan sonnet (ABBA ABBA CDECDE or ABBA ABBA CDCDCD) or the Shakespearean sonnet (ABAB CDCD EFEF GG). Many modern sonnets utilize stanza divisions or rhyme schemes that differ from these traditional forms.

Can the poem be characterized as more vague or more detailed? What was the author’s intention behind the detail or lack of detail in the poem?

Harwood gives us minimal information about the narrator in the opening lines—“She sits in the park. Her clothes are out of date” (Line 1)—and little other information is revealed beyond the details given in the opening lines. The woman is unnamed throughout the poem and is accordingly introduced only with the pronoun “she,” as “[s]he sits in the park.” Her lover is identified only as “[s]omeone she loved once” and as having a “neat hand.” These bare characterizations create a stark contrast between the two figures—the woman is unfashionable while the man is neat and put-together. The small details point to the greater distinctions between their life positions. Similarly, there are no details given about the park itself, beyond the gloomy “dirt” and “flickering lights.” The reader does not know what the park looks like, what the weather is like, or whether the woman is sitting on a bench or chair.

This lack of context is deliberate: Harwood carefully chooses the information that is given in the poem, selecting only details that will give the reader insight into the woman’s role as a mother and her relationship with her past lover. By keeping the poem vague, Harwood evokes the widespread nature of women’s dissatisfaction with motherhood and gender roles, suggesting that it is not uncommon for women to struggle with these feelings, despite the expectation that women enjoy motherhood. The “she” in the poem could refer to many women in various life situations, all of whom face similar challenges grappling with the demands of motherhood, their identity, and the course of their lives.

Bibliography

The High Line Park was conceived in 1999 within the New York City and currently run by the Friends of the High Lane. Currently, the park is a conservancy and a public space for the residents and visitors within New York City. The park has experienced transformation between the West 34 th Street and West 30 th Street.

However, several social concerns have been raised on this project. Thus, this analytical treatise attempts to review the social concerns of transformation of the High Lane into a public park.

Decision environment often experience dynamics and swings which create short and long term effect on chances of survival for two alternatives to solve a problem. When faced with a decision dilemma that requires critical assessments, analysis resorts to analytical tools that ensure competitive positioning advantage. However, there must be a clear justification for the decision through review of benefits and projected results of suggested decision.

In making the decision to either rebuild the High Lane Park in the city of New York, it is critical to review the benefits of the interested constituencies such as the city residents, the residents of those surrounding the city, the federal government, and the Mayor of the city. Stakeholders are individuals, groups or organisations with a stake/claim in a project’s outcome 1 .

Generally, not all stakeholders will have the same objectives and motivations for a project. The first process of managing stakeholders is to identify them.

Quality planning involves in identifying which quality standards are relevant to the project and determining how to satisfy them. It is one of the key facilitating processes during project planning and should be performed regularly and in parallel with the other project planning process. Due to its small size, the park is always full beyond its capacity.

This has been a concern especially to residents of the High Line settlement who were used to peaceful neighbourhood. The process of decision making is dependent on heuristic since it provides assumptions, integration of project organization framework, and ethical control 2 .

Being a member of the High Lane residents’ constituency, the past experience of peaceful neighborhood inspired this concern. Besides, the cognitive biases have influenced the decision to establish the park.

Ethics determine the level of participation by the members of a constituency who after interaction with each other, identify hale and hearty social interventions passed through a feasibility test for implementation to initiate cultural shift among the primary stakeholder.

Besides, communication ethics define content policy based on the need to address rational and irrational habits in order to strike a balance on environmental friendly decision process. Besides, the target of this decision implementation is the entire hierarchy of constituency members from the top to the least at bottom of the ladder.

As a result of properly structured communication ethics, the decision environment becomes holistic, soft and socially friendly to the constituency members. Besides, healthy ethical communication culture creates structural goals which develop norms, expectations of specific behavior display, and appropriate guideline controlling interaction with one another 3 .

The residents of High Line neighborhood have raised the social concern of interaction to unwelcomed culture such as cases of burglary within the park have increased. Besides, social perverts are often spotted in the park preying on their victims since there is very little presence of the authority.

Among the aspired ideals of the heuristic model in park rehabilitation includes the need for a constituency to strive to develop good culture by fostering a strong alignment on the monitored path of achieving its goals, missions and vision 4 . This includes written rules of engagement, expected behavior, and repercussions for deviation. Each member of the constituency becomes part of the philosophy upon confirming allegiance.

Periodically, the constituency will subconsciously restructure these goals in consistency with the changing life demands. Consequently, when people are absorbed and made to feel part of these goals, they would strive to give their best towards the decision process.

Moreover, cooperation with the media has proven instrumental in creating awareness on magnitude and effects of hurricane on economic, social, and health sectors in order to prepare the residents of High line neighborhood psychologically for unprecedented losses in the form of future expansion. Many of the local residents live in a fear of permanent displacement since the current expansion strategy of the park is silent on possible need for further expansion of the park.

As human nature dictates, the park philosophy carries with it enticements. When these are timely discovered, they may lead to a deep attachment with the object over which such a decision motivation is given. When successfully carried out, emotional strains are kept at bay as constant interaction is a means of boosting confidence and personality a recipe for good organizational culture in the constituency.

In addition, this regulator manages unrealistic personal pressure among other excessive demanding thought system and personal cognitive factors inclusive of health issues, relationship and inability to adjust to sudden changes 5 . Eventual resilience will vary depending on the period taken to implement the plan which may totally be different from another.

However, this must be accompanied by definite values as determined by the immediate neighborhood. Ironically, the park has led to relocation of the relatively poor members of the neighborhood since the land rates and house rates have skyrocketed. Instead, the relatively rich have taken over the neighborhood. As a result, the family of the High Line neighborhood has been disintegrated permanently.

Basically, an externality in the field of environmental conservation and sustainability refers to any benefit or cost which happens due to an action or activity and it directly affects a third party who was not in any way involved and had not made the choice to bring upon yourself that benefit or cost. Reflectively, an externality is a secondary result of a primary action and may bring with it a benefits or a cost.

There are two types of externalities, that is, positive and negative externality. Negative externalities are accompanied by costs incurred while positive externalities are characterized by strings of benefits 6 . An ideal example of a negative externality in the park project is the continuous uncontrolled pollution activities that directly causes air from the vehicles down the High Line.

As a result of the pollution, the whole community has to incur the cost of poor health and possible clean up to restore the clean environment, despite High Line being a park. Air pollution is a negative externality. Air pollution in the above scenario can be classified as a negative externality since it is accompanied by hidden costs such as health concerns that the entire High Line community has to incur despite being non parties in the pollution activities.

The community has to incur the cost of treating those affected by the pollution and has to live with the consequences that the pollution may put on them. In order to deal with this externality, the community should seek for compensation from the city of New York mayor.

Sustainable progress is an issue stirred by drift from an ideal thought to a supreme endeavor to tackle emerging problems of financial challenges and ecological problems. This category of revolution has endeavored to solve existing social problems. At present, people prefer eco-friendly programs when deciding recreational facilities to visit.

Inflated cost of living to the original residents

Reflectively, the principle of comparative advantage is a concept that connotes the desirable ability of an individual or nation to give a service at a relatively lower opportunity cost and marginal cost as compared to another who has the intention of giving the same service, in this case, the High Line Park.

Despite the fact the New York City may possess efficient factors for nearly all the park services as a result of its absolute advantage, the residents don’t seem to benefit since the park services are not affordable to the relatively poor persons in the neighborhood. Sustainability and sustainable development is a term mostly applied by urban planners’ inconsideration environmental and demographic factors which influences urban set up 7 .

As compared to early population, the modern population has increased in population as well as change in their social economic activities. For this reason, urban planners must develop a mechanism to cater for space in the urban centers as well as the increase in trend over environmental pollution. In addition, the planners should address issues tied to social resources, pollution in the urban centers, climate changes and urban heat.

The High Line Park does not have a regulation policy that will ensure its sustainability amidst competing interests. Sustainable development should be created in a way that the short and long-term healthy growth of an urban center should be maintained.

This takes the aspect of effective and efficient control of pollution, proper housing to reduce congestion, good social ecology, better mechanisms of restoring natural resources and positive community interactions. For sustainable development to be carried out in the High Line Park a wide view of policies and plans must be put in place. Collaborative Strategic Goal Oriented Programming could be applied.

This program looks into analyzing decision making based on well assessed problem on the ground using any possible means. It has majorly been applied to large urban systems with problems. It has successfully been applied to the European urban development system and on the project of LUDA.

The planning system applies the social approach of uniting groups to unearth information and ideas on the problems affecting that particular urban area. Currently the issues for discussion in the High Line Park project include urban aesthetics and safety.

The visual impression in urban centers has become another important aspect of urban transformation. Safety on weather condition and other natural calamities like earthquakes are also emerging issues in the sustainable development plans of the High Line Park since it location and position is prone to weather disaster.

Actually, sustainability is a state of acquiring social, environmental, and economical expectations without compromising important aspects of life for future generation. Indeed, sustainable living therefore, is expressed as a situation of living in an innate sustainable and appealing facility distinct of ecological, financial, and conscious features.

Moreover, sustainable devise and sustainable progress are significant features in achieving sustainable living situation. Adaptation of sociological approach in environmental impact assessment recommendations should be inclusive of an environmental committee that would clear the weighty issues surrounding technical and institutional assumptions in establishing the third phase of the High Line Park.

Through this, the stakeholders will reach a compromising but satisfactory decision that will be influenced by participatory decision process, rather than adopting either a protagonist or antagonist stance in this multimillion dollar project. Thus, a wider scrutiny will encompass scientific and democratic purposes and concerns of the locals 8 .

As a result, the common ground that is likely to be fostered by the above committee would be the stimulus of free activities and proactive engagements for all the interest institutions, persons, and extra-institutional groups. After reviewing several decisions and judgment on different cases on park management, sociological treatment would provide the most neutral ground for implementation of the third phase of the High Line Park.

The micro level analysis requires personalized approach which will indicate an imminent and forthcoming need for personnel who can function as safety engineers within the High Line Park.

A day at the park

It was the school holiday. Sam and his family were at home, having breakfast together. Sam’s father said, “Let’s go to the park after breakfast. We haven’t been there for a long time.” Sam and his sister cheered.

Soon, they were on their way to the park. When they reached there, the park was quite crowded as many people were there for their morning walks and some were fishing in the lake nearby.

Sam’s parents took them to the playground and the two children began playing on the slide. It was fun as they hardly got a chance to play at the playground. Furthermore, they were quite lucky that there were not many children there on that day. They also went on swings and had a competition on who could swing higher. Finally, they went on the seesaw and had a whale of a time.

After all that, Sam’s father said they should take a brisk walk around the park. The air was cool and crisp. There were birds singing and the scenery was beautiful. Many people were involved in jogging and ‘taiji’ exercises.

As they walked, they also chatted. Sam’s sister was skipping merrily along the track and from time to time, she would smell the beautiful flowers. When they reached the other end of the park, they bought a few bottles of drinks from the kiosk and sat down to drink.

Soon, they were on their way back again. After they had finished their walk, Sam’s mother suggested that they go to the market to buy some groceries for the week.

Short Essay on The Park

The Park is a vast and beautiful place. It is a place for both kids and adults to go during their leisure time and relax.  They enjoy the time spending there.  The Park generally has trees, plants, flowers, a play area, exercise area, yoga hall, etc…  

Children Play Area includes Slide, See-saw, Swing, and merry go round and other play activities.  Slide playing gives the children a wonderful feel.  Swing makes us feel as though they are flying in the air.  The children play hide and seek, kick the ball and they run fast to catch it with the new friends here.   The Park has flowering plants, bushes, and trees also.  It is a rule that we should not pluck the flowers.  The beauty of the flowers has to be seen and admired by all.  The gardeners maintain these plants and trees, water them daily and clean the dried leaves and make the area beautiful.    Some parks have an exercise area called Gym for adults to do exercises.  Some have separate Yoga Open Hall for people to do yoga.  Most parks have a special walking track for the people who like to do a long walk without any interruptions.  Some parks have a small pond with fishes in it. 

The Park gives people fresh air to breathe, facilities to do exercises and finally take rest in Benches.  They can sit, see, and enjoy the children playing sitting on the benches.  This gives them peace of mind and relaxation.  Thus Park is a really good place for both kids and adults to enjoy, play, exercise, and relax.

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.

An NPR editor who wrote a critical essay on company has resigned after being suspended

NEW YORK — (AP) — A National Public Radio editor who wrote an essay criticizing his employer for promoting liberal views resigned on Wednesday, attacking NPR's new CEO on the way out.

Uri Berliner, a senior editor on NPR's business desk, posted his resignation letter on X, formerly Twitter, a day after it was revealed that he had been suspended for five days for violating company rules about outside work done without permission.

“I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems” written about in his essay, Berliner said in his resignation letter.

Katherine Maher, a former tech executive appointed in January as NPR’s chief executive, has been criticized by conservative activists for social media messages that disparaged former President Donald Trump. The messages predated her hiring at NPR.

NPR’s public relations chief said the organization does not comment on individual personnel matters.

The suspension and subsequent resignation highlight the delicate balance that many U.S. news organizations and their editorial employees face. On one hand, as journalists striving to produce unbiased news, they're not supposed to comment on contentious public issues; on the other, many journalists consider it their duty to critique their own organizations' approaches to journalism when needed.

In his essay , written for the online Free Press site, Berliner said NPR is dominated by liberals and no longer has an open-minded spirit. He traced the change to coverage of Trump's presidency.

“There's an unspoken consensus about the stories we should pursue and how they should be framed,” he wrote. “It's frictionless — one story after another about instances of supposed racism, transphobia, signs of the climate apocalypse, Israel doing something bad and the dire threat of Republican policies. It's almost like an assembly line.”

He said he'd brought up his concerns internally and no changes had been made, making him “a visible wrong-thinker at a place I love.”

In the essay's wake, NPR top editorial executive, Edith Chapin, said leadership strongly disagreed with Berliner's assessment of the outlet's journalism and the way it went about its work.

It's not clear what Berliner was referring to when he talked about disparagement by Maher. In a lengthy memo to staff members last week, she wrote: “Asking a question about whether we're living up to our mission should always be fair game: after all, journalism is nothing if not hard questions. Questioning whether our people are serving their mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful and demeaning.”

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo revealed some of Maher's past tweets after the essay was published. In one tweet, dated January 2018, Maher wrote that “Donald Trump is a racist.” A post just before the 2020 election pictured her in a Biden campaign hat.

In response, an NPR spokeswoman said Maher, years before she joined the radio network, was exercising her right to express herself. She is not involved in editorial decisions at NPR, the network said.

The issue is an example of what can happen when business executives, instead of journalists, are appointed to roles overseeing news organizations: they find themselves scrutinized for signs of bias in ways they hadn't been before. Recently, NBC Universal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde has been criticized for service on paid corporate boards.

Maher is the former head of the Wikimedia Foundation. NPR's own story about the 40-year-old executive's appointment in January noted that she “has never worked directly in journalism or at a news organization.”

In his resignation letter, Berliner said that he did not support any efforts to strip NPR of public funding. “I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism,” he wrote.
