Sinergia grant with participation of the Theodor Kocher Institute approved December 2022

As the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis continues to increase, so does the pressure to find suitable treatment options – and with it the need to decipher the physiologic underpinnings of these pathologies. This includes the metabolite clearance and immune surveillance functions of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), as well as immune privilege established by the brain barriers, which are disturbed during neuroinflammation. In this Sinergia project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, we will investigate how CSF dynamics and brain barriers change with age, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration. The project consortium includes the teams of Britta Engelhardt and Steven Proulx (Theodor Kocher Institute, University of Bern), Bert Müller (Biomaterials Science Center, University of Basel), and of Vartan Kurtcuoglu (Institute of Physiology, University of Zurich) as coordinator. Science Filmmaking Marathon Zurich

Two TKI scientific collaborators, Kristina Bervé and Daniela Ivan, participated in a Science Filmmaking Marathon which took place in Zurich. The objective of this marathon was to learn how to use different storytelling and filmmaking tools to communicate scientific results and make science more accessible for the broader audience. During the three days of the marathon, together with 3 other PhD students of different backgrounds, from ETH and University of Zurich, and helped by a trainer, we made a 4 minutes documentary related to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Our short film, `NO DENIAL`, highlights a recent discovery made by a team of researchers from the University of Bern and ETH Zurich who studied the mechanisms behind SARS-Covid-19 viral infection and underlines the necessity of a closer collaboration between scientists and media to educate the general public. The movie will be available online at this website - https://www.sciencefilm.ch/scientists-as-filmmake-2020 starting from tonight until Sunday (5-8th of November) at any time. If you want to help us promote our movie and the message we want to send 😊, you can link our film to your social media accounts (i.e. Twitter/ Facebook). With this movie, we are participating in this year´s 3rd Global Science Film Festival, so, keep your fingers crossed for us 😉🤞. Thanks a lot for reading this long message and we wish you a great end of the week! All the best, Daniela and Kristina

Ann Anderson Berry, MD, PhD

Ann Anderson Berry, MD, PhD

Ann Anderson Berry, MD, PhD, is a recipient of the UNMC Faculty Senate’s Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Graduate Students Award.

  • Name:  Ann Anderson Berry, MD, PhD
  • Title:  Executive director, Child Health Research Institute, and professor, Department of Pediatrics, UNMC College of Medicine
  • Joined UNMC:  Residency, 1998-2001, faculty, 2004
  • Hometown:  Casper, Wyoming

What are the greatest rewards of mentoring graduate students?

I learn so much from my graduate students. They are each talented, inquisitive and creative and start their PhD training with varied and complementary skill sets. Everyone brings something to the lab group, and together we are able meet and exceed our research goals and the impact of our work.

Describe a moment in your career when you realized you had picked the right profession .

As a clinician, administrator and a clinical and translational researcher, I am able to make an impact on my patient population (neonates) and their mothers in each of my roles. Being able to take what I do in clinical care in the NICU and translate it into research questions and studies that have the potential to impact clinical practice and policy is incredibly rewarding.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a mentor?

One of my biggest challenges as a faculty member is having to say no to a potential student. We have so many talented students at UNMC that are looking for a high-quality research experience, I would encourage all faculty to consider mentoring in research whether you have a wet lab, do clinical or translational research, or have a small study idea that you could do with the help of a medical student. It is time well spent.

How do you know when you’ve been successful as a mentor?

My greatest satisfaction is when my students and trainees grow in their research practice. I love to see them confidently plan research next steps, problem solve and educate trainees who have started after them, other graduate students and the faculty in our lab group. Graduation day always is bittersweet.

Johns Hopkins University, PhD union reach tentative agreement

The proposed three-year collective bargaining agreement, which includes enhanced pay and benefits, will now go to a ratification vote.

By Hub staff report

Johns Hopkins University and the union representing PhD student employees at the university have reached agreement on a proposed three-year collective bargaining agreement covering a broad range of important topics, including minimum stipend levels, years of guaranteed funding, union and management rights, discipline, grievance and arbitration procedures, and health and safety provisions.

Since last May, bargaining committees from JHU and the union that represents the PhD students—Teachers and Researchers United – United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America Local 197 (TRU-UE Local 197)—have been negotiating details of the CBA. After more than 40 bargaining sessions, a tentative agreement was reached on Friday night. The proposed CBA, which includes 29 articles, will now go to all PhD students represented by TRU-UE for a ratification vote.

The proposed CBA offers enhanced pay and benefits that raise the minimum stipend to $47,000 per year beginning this July. Stipend increases are more than 40% on average across the bargaining unit and more than 50% in some departments. The three-year agreement also includes guaranteed increases of more than 6% in the second year of the contract to $50,000, and then a 4% increase in the third year of the contract. Among other benefit enhancements, the proposed CBA also includes paid health benefits for children and some spouses, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave, increased vacation and sick time, and a one-time $1,000 signing bonus for all bargaining unit members if the agreement is ratified.

"We are pleased to have reached an agreement on the first contract between the university and TRU-UE Local 197 and appreciate the constructive and collaborative spirit union leaders brought to the negotiations as we sought common ground on a wide range of important issues," said Sabine Stanley , vice provost of graduate education and a member of the university's bargaining team. "If ratified, this agreement will strengthen PhD education at JHU."
