Voice   Generator

This web app allows you to generate voice audio from text - no login needed, and it's completely free! It uses your browser's built-in voice synthesis technology, and so the voices will differ depending on the browser that you're using. You can download the audio as a file, but note that the downloaded voices may be different to your browser's voices because they are downloaded from an external text-to-speech server. If you don't like the externally-downloaded voice, you can use a recording app on your device to record the "system" or "internal" sound while you're playing the generated voice audio.

Want more voices? You can download the generated audio and then use voicechanger.io to add effects to the voice. For example, you can make the voice sound more robotic, or like a giant ogre, or an evil demon. You can even use it to reverse the generated audio, randomly distort the speed of the voice throughout the audio, add a scary ghost effect, or add an "anonymous hacker" effect to it.

Note: If the list of available text-to-speech voices is small, or all the voices sound the same, then you may need to install text-to-speech voices on your device. Many operating systems (including some versions of Android, for example) only come with one voice by default, and the others need to be downloaded in your device's settings. If you don't know how to install more voices, and you can't find a tutorial online, you can try downloading the audio with the download button instead. As mentioned above, the downloaded audio uses external voices which may be different to your device's local ones.

You're free to use the generated voices for any purpose - no attribution needed. You could use this website as a free voice over generator for narrating your videos in cases where don't want to use your real voice. You can also adjust the pitch of the voice to make it sound younger/older, and you can even adjust the rate/speed of the generated speech, so you can create a fast-talking high-pitched chipmunk voice if you want to.

Note: If you have offline-compatible voices installed on your device (check your system Text-To-Speech settings), then this web app works offline! Find the "add to homescreen" or "install" button in your browser to add a shortcut to this app in your home screen. And note that if you don't have an internet connection, or if for some reason the voice audio download isn't working for you, you can also use a recording app that records your devices "internal" or "system" sound.

Speaking loudly doesn't come naturally to everyone, and that's okay! However, if you feel like your soft voice is holding you back—like if you're struggling with being assertive or giving effective speeches—there are a few tricks you can try to boost your volume. Even better, we're here to help answer all of your questions about how to get loud and show off that inner confidence!

How can I project my voice?

• Don't let your posture get stiff, though—you should still feel relaxed and comfortable. Also, release any tension that you might be holding in your chest and shoulders before you start speaking, since that tension could make your voice sound constricted.
• This might feel a little strange to do at first, especially in a regular conversation, but it's a really subtle trick that can actually help a lot!

• If you're feeling really nervous, exhale slowly through your mouth after your first deep breath, then breathe in again. This will help calm your nervous system, so you'll physically feel more relaxed and confident.

16 Tips to Speak Louder (If You Have a Quiet Voice)

I have a quiet voice and it gets strained in loud environments, so there have been many times in my past where I’ve felt like the group can’t hear what I have to say.

I would have something witty , or interesting to contribute, but my voice wouldn’t carry enough volume to be heard. Other times it felt as though there was never a break in the conversation for me to interject my thoughts. Sometimes people would even talk over what I was saying when I would speak. Or they would ask me to repeat myself 2-3 times before finally acknowledging what I had said. Needless to say, this was disheartening and made socializing feel like a pain.

After feeling left out , I began to research how to make myself heard, and I’m happy to say I found some great tips that I have tried out in real life, and they have improved my social interactions immensely.

Here’s how to speak louder:

1. Address underlying nervousness

Ever noticed how, when you feel anxious around strangers, your voice gets softer? (And it only gets worse when someone says, “Speak up!” or worse, “Why are you so quiet?”)

This is our subconscious trying to help out:

Our brain picks up on nervosity -> Assumes we might be in danger -> Makes us take up less space to minimize the risk of danger. The only way to fight our subconscious is to bring it up to a conscious level. So what helped me was to tell myself: “I’m nervous, so my voice will be softer. I’m going to CONSCIOUSLY speak with a louder voice even though my body is telling me not to .” A therapist can also help you overcome and address underlying nervousness.

2. Use your diaphragm

If your voice doesn’t carry, try what actors do – PROJECT. To project your voice you need to speak from your diaphragm. To really understand where you should be speaking from, let’s visually picture where, and what your diaphragm is.

Now close your eyes and imagine exactly where your diaphragm is. Place your hand below your chest, and above your abdomen. Yep. RIGHT there. That is exactly where you should be speaking from to have a louder voice.

3. Moderate the volume to not sound obnoxious

I wondered how I could project my soft voice without turning into one of those loudmouths I’ve always been annoyed by. The secret is to not over-do. Just because I tell you to project your voice doesn’t mean that I want you to speak your loudest all the time.

Our goal here is to be loud enough to be heard, but not louder.

When you practice speaking from your abdomen, try doing it at different volumes, so you can match what’s suitable for the situation.

4. Practice deep breathing

There are many ways to practice speaking louder. Often times, actors will partake in breathing exercises as this strengthens their diaphragm, and allows their voice to project loudly and really fill the theater up.

In fact, I have an exercise that I use to make my diaphragm stronger. This is an exercise you can do right now:

Take a deep breath. Imagine filling your entire stomach. Don’t stop breathing in until you feel completely full- Now, hold your breath inside. Count to 4 or 5, whichever is more comfortable for you. Now you can slowly release. As you breathe out, imagine the air is coming directly from your belly button. This will put you in the habit of practicing talking from an “expansive area” as voice coaches call it.

5. Use your voice in new ways

When you have some alone time, play around with your voice. You may feel a little silly, but these types of exercises are exactly how actors, public speakers, and speech therapists practice making their voices louder, and stronger.

The next time you have some alone time, sing the ABC’s. As you sing, try to increase in volume. As you get louder, practice going up and down octaves. Don’t be afraid to be silly, you are alone after all.

Disclaimer: This isn’t easy. People spend their entire careers on vocal development. Think of your voice as an instrument. You have to practice to see improvements.

6. Explore your voice

If you have time, and really want to focus on exploring your own voice, watch this Ted Talk. It’s less than 20 minutes long and incredibly helpful for those of us who want to improve our voices.

• What makes someone vocally aware
• Positive vocal habits to engage in

7. Open up your body and breath

Now that we’ve gone over ways to train your voice in speaking louder, it’s time to focus on actually speaking up during your conversation.

It’s good to regularly practice with the exercises I’ve talked about so far. But you also need to think about your volume during your conversations so you can immediately feel better about your social interactions.

While you are having a conversation, try the following for automatic results.

• Hold an upright posture (This opens up the airways)
• Open your throat, imagine speaking from your belly
• Avoid shallow breaths (Breath down through your belly instead)
• Pronounce words with emphasis

Use these tips for immediate changes along with repeating breathing exercises, and playing around with your voice will result in long term change in the way you speak.

8. Lower your pitch slightly

If you’re like me, you’ll automatically get more high-pitched when you try to speak louder. You can counteract that by bringing down your pitch consciously . Too much, and it will sound odd, but try recording yourself and hear what different pitches sound like. As you know, the voice always sounds darker to you than it really is.

On top of that, a lower-pitched voice has another benefit: People tend to pay more attention to someone with a slightly lower-pitched voice.

9. Speak slower

Because my voice was too quiet for group conversations, I developed a bad habit of speaking too fast. It was as if I tried to say whatever I wanted to say before someone would come in and interrupt me.

Ironically, we tend to listen less to people who speak too fast.

Instead, take your time. It’s not about speaking as slow as you can. That will just come off as sleepy and low energy. But dare to add pauses and changing your pacing.

I learned a lot from paying attention to how socially savvy friends talked. Analyze people who are good at telling stories, and notice how they don’t stress to get out what they are trying to say!

10. Use a signal that you’re about to talk

How do you enter an ongoing group conversation if you have a quiet voice? You know that you’re not supposed to interrupt, so you wait for whoever talks to finish, and then, just as you’re about to say your thing, someone else starts talking.

The game-changer for me was using a subconscious signal. Just before I’m about to start talking, I raise my hand so that people react to the movement. At the same time, I breathe (The type of breath we take just before we’re about to start talking) loud enough for people to notice.

This is magic for someone with a naturally quiet voice: Everyone knows that you’re about to say something, and the risk is lower that someone will speak over you.

These are some frames from an actual dinner I hosted a while back. See how everyone looks at the guy in the red t-shirt on frame 1 who’s just done talking. In frame 2, I raised my hand and breathed in, which turned everyone’s heads toward me. In frame 3, you see how I have everyone’s attention as I start talking.

11. Make eye contact with the right person

I was puzzled that sometimes when I talked, people talked right over me. It was like they didn’t even hear me. After a while, I realized my mistake: I looked away while taking, instead of looking the listeners in their eyes.

Here’s a trick to make sure that people listen to you: Make eye contact with the person you feel has the most influence over the group. That way, you’re subconsciously signaling that you are part of the conversation (even if you don’t say anything and even if you have a quiet voice).

By making eye contact with the most influential person, you are making yourself present in the group.

Whenever you’re talking, keep eye contact with the influential person and other listeners. Keeping eye contact like this “locks” people into your conversation and it’s harder to blatantly speak over you.

12. Acknowledge the ongoing conversation

One way to insert yourself into the conversation is to go along with what is already being said. I make sure to comment on something that has already been a topic of interest. This takes the pressure off to say something extremely meaningful or interesting. And also, the group is more likely to listen to you, even if you have a quiet voice.

You can simply comment, or agree with what’s already happening. We all need to feel validated, so it’s likely you will be received well if you positively reinforce what is already being said. Once you use the power of positive reinforcement you become part of the conversation. At this point, where you already have their attention, you can speak your mind in a more opinionated way.

So here’s how I enter a group conversation to make sure that people listen:

“Liza, you mentioned before that whales are not risking extinction any more, that’s so good to hear! Do you know if that’s the case for the blue whale, too?”

Entering a conversation in this agreeing, acknowledging, probing way helps you make yourself heard, even if your voice is quiet.

13. Visualize yourself as someone people listen to

The most intimidating conversations happen when we view ourselves as an outsider to the social group we are with. It may be partly true, perhaps we are at a social gathering and only know 1-2 people. But it is a HUGE mistake to view yourself as an outsider to the conversation. Rather, think of yourself as NEW.

It took me a long time to realize almost everyone experiences a nervousness of sorts when interacting with new people. Those that come across confidently have often “faked it” until they made it.

A key component in “faking it” is to visualize yourself as part of the conversation.

If you have the mindset that you don’t belong, you will externally communicate that through your body language, so even when you DO work up the nerve to say something, people aren’t going to pay attention because it seems like you don’t want to be part of the conversation.

Instead of writing yourself off, replace your negative thoughts with positive ones. For example, if you commonly think to yourself, “Why am I here, no one cares who I am or what I have to say. ” Think like this instead, “I don’t know many people here, yet, but I will after the night is done.”

Put a positive, but realistic twist on your expectations for the evening. You’ll be surprised how this affects your conversations.

On your way to your next social interaction, visualize yourself as vividly as you can as a socially savvy, popular person who can make yourself heard.

14. Move to the middle of the group

Because I have a naturally quiet voice, it used to feel the safest to be on the outskirt of the group, but that’s the last place to be heard.

Even if you are speaking, it’s going to be hard for others to hear you, and this is where you will get into everyone asking you to repeat what you just said, or worse ignoring what you said because you’re too far away.

Move your body literally towards the center of the conversation. This is an easy way to automatically be part of the conversation. People will notice the movement, so act naturally, and genuinely interested in what is happening. Once they make eye contact with you it’s time to insert your thoughts into the conversation.

Here’s my trick to reposition without coming off as odd: Wait to reposition until you are talking. That’ll make your move look natural.

15. Talk with your body and use hand gestures

If your voice is naturally quiet, be bold with your body. Use your arms, hands, fingers, to make gestures to emphasize the words you are saying. Confidence is exerted through body movements, so move!

Think of your body like an exclamation point. It can bring excitement to the words you speak, and spark interest in those around you. By using gestures to emphasize what you say, you draw attention to yourself, and people will want to listen up and hear exactly what you have to say.

It’s important not to go overboard with this tip. It’s an easy one to overdo, you’ll need to experiment and practice to find a good, natural balance.

16. Don’t overcorrect

After reading and digesting these tips, make sure you don’t take any of them too far. Nothing is more annoying in a group conversation than that one person who insists on making some loud comment about every single thing that is said. Typically those comments have little substance and detract from the conversation flow.

It’s okay to make mistakes, we all do, all the time. Just make sure you try to learn from your mistakes. Try to find a balance where you make yourself heard without being annoying or taking all the attention.

Why do some people think that people who speak softly do so to purposely annoy everyone. I talk soft because I have a soft voice, not because I’m afraid. Since Covid hit, I’ve been living full-time with a family member who’s hearing impaired, and my voice is fast and quiet and at a pitch their hearing aids don’t pick up well. It’s… not been a fun time for either of us. Found your article about a week ago, though, and since then I’ve been trying to learn how to talk through my diaphragm. My Voice Is Too Too Low

I went to a seminar where the speaker had an effective tactic to refocus attention. He would raise the volume of his voice for the first word or phrase, then drop it back to normal speaking tone and carry on. Often he would pair this with a bit of a pause after the volume shock for everyone to recover from the snap to their attention and settle in to listening.

The problem with low speaking is usually physiological and better serve by speech therapy than learning to be confident. If you feel you need to speak louder and do so without doing it correctly, you will hurt your throat/vocal/esophagus which is essentially what produces your voice.

change volume of text to speech without effect the windows volume

hello every one.

i am a low vission person and much and much better for me to use windows xp sp3.

as i have an eye problem i use eSpeak 1.48.04 with the kmplayer to read the subtitle of the movies.

some movies have a low level sound, when i go to loud the volume, so the text to speech volume (eSpeak volume) is either louder and i cannot hear the movie soun.

can any one tell me how can i define a volume for text to speech or define a volume for eSpeak tts?

"Sure.  While your TTS is running, click the Volume icon and then pick "mixer" and you can adjust the volume of every program separately, including your TTS program.  Just make sure it's making sound, because you can only adjust it while it's actively playing a sound (but it will remember for next time)."

i don't know this is working in win7 or not but i am using win xp sp3 and in its volume mixer, programs are not separated.

any thing else about win xp or define a volume for espeak tts module?

Sorry my mistake, this is only possible after XP. So it would work in Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10.

Nope, at least not unless the espeak program provides its own volume control (similar to how a youtube video has its own volume slider).

espeak tts works with "espeak_sapi.dll" and i see in the source code of espeak the parameter that named as "espeakVOLUME" which range is betwean 0 to 200 and the default value is 100. how espeak_sapi.dll was been made? is there any way to edit espeak_sapi.dll and change the value of 100 to 75?

one question else, espeak tts module is work with "espeak_sapi.dll". how does it run which mean how windows use this dll file to read the text, which mean that with what command the "espeak_sapi.dll" is called with the win xp sp3 os?

NEW YORK — The heart of former President Donald Trump 's New York hush money trial, overseen by Judge Juan Merchan , kicked off on Monday with opening statements and witness testimony.

Matthew Colangelo delivered the opening argument for the prosecution, alleging that the former president's actions were "election fraud, pure and simple." Trump's attorney, Todd Blanche, criticized accounts from Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen and porn star Stormy Daniels , telling the jury "There's nothing wrong with trying to influence an election."

Jurors are deciding whether Trump falsified business records to cover up a hush money payment from Cohen to Daniels.

Trump authorized the payment in order to keep Daniels from hurting his 2016 presidential campaign by going public with her story that the pair had sex, according to the prosecutors. Trump denies Daniels' claim and has pleaded not guilty.

David Pecker , the former head of the National Enquirer’s parent company, was the first witness called to the stand in the case. He's expected to face further questions about how the company routinely paid for scandalous stories that it didn’t publish, under what others called a “catch-and-kill” strategy.

Donald Trump insists payments were ‘legal expense’ rather than attempt to affect 2016 campaign

After a morning of opening arguments by prosecutors and defense lawyers in Donald Trump’s hush money trial, the former president gave his own eight-minute summary to reporters in the hallway outside the courtroom.

Trump is charged with falsifying business records to pay hush money to silence women before the 2016 election. But he insisted that his payments to his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, were correctly marked as legal expenses rather than what prosecutors contend were a reimbursement for the $130,000 paid to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

Trump said Cohen was imprisoned for other charges dealing with taxi medallions and tax fraud. But Cohen also pleaded guilty to a campaign finance violation for the payment to Daniels. Trump repeated that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s predecessor and federal prosecutors investigated him and declined to prosecute.

Donald Trump exits courtroom after day 5 of hush money trial

Donald Trump exited the courtroom at 12:43 p.m. ET. Proceedings will resume Tuesday with arguments over whether Trump has violated Judge Juan Merchan's gag order.

Those will be held in the morning outside the presence of the jury. Jurors have been instructed that proceedings involving them will start at 11:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, and will end at 2 p.m. ET in light of the Passover holiday.

What is ‘catch-and-kill’?

The National Enquirer, a tabloid, routinely paid sources for stories and sometimes refused to publish them, under what prosecutors and witnesses in the Donald Trump hush money trial called a “catch-and-kill” strategy.

The publication’s parent company, American Media Inc., denied a catch-and-kill policy after The Wall Street Journal revealed a $150,000 payment to Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who claimed a year-long affair with Trump, without ever publishing the story.

But instead, the company put her picture on a couple of magazine covers and had her write a few fitness columns.

AMI later acknowledged spending more than was routine to block McDougal’s story because the company expected to be reimbursed by Trump. The silencing of derogatory stories before the 2016 election is at the heart of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s charges against Trump that he falsified business records to pay hush money.

Lawyers, Judge Juan Merchan talk over lingering trial issues

Although jurors have left for the day, lawyers and the judge are continuing to discuss trial issues, including instructions the judge should give when lawyers introduce newspaper articles later in trial. Trump lawyer Emil Bove also raised concerns about "hearsay" coming into trial that's tied to Dylan Howard. a former editor of The National Enquirer who is unable to travel and come to the trial, according to earlier testimony. 

"Hearsay" is a technical legal term referring to statements that were made outside a courtroom but are introduced in court in order to prove the truth of what was said. Such statements are prohibited unless they fall into specific exceptions.

Jurors excused for rest of day

Judge Juan Merchan said proceedings would need to wrap up for the rest of the day. He earlier said they would need to end by 12:30 p.m. ET for an alternate juror's emergency appointment over a toothache. The jurors have exited the courtroom. The lawyers have approached Merchan's bench for a private conversation.

Prosecutor asks Pecker about former National Enquirer editor, 'juicy stories '

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass asked Pecker about Dylan Howard, who was once the editor of The National Enquirer. Howard now lives in Australia and has a health condition that prevents him from traveling, to the best of Pecker's knowledge, Pecker said. Pecker confirmed Howard would run "juicy stories" by Pecker.

Pecker described having say over what would get published, including approving expenditures. He confirmed prosecutor Joshua Steinglass' statement that he would have "final say" over whether to publish an article involving a famous person.

Blanche reminded jurors they promised to put aside any views they have about Trump and decide the case based on the evidence presented in the trial. If they do that, there will be a "very swift" not guilty verdict for Trump, Blanche claimed.

Trump lawyer Todd Blanche began telling jurors that Michael Cohen has lied multiple times under oath . But prosecutors objected and there was just a private conversation at the judge's bench. "The objection is sustained," Judge Juan Merchan said.

Blanche then told jurors they will learn Cohen has pleaded guilty to lying under oath. There was no objection – Merchan appears to be allowing that statement to the jurors. 

Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress in 2018.

Todd Blanche in his opening statement has been focusing on Michael Cohen, a potentially key witness for prosecutors.

Michael Cohen "has misrepresented key conversations, where the only witness who was present for the conversation was Mr. Cohen and allegedly President Trump," Blanche told the jurors.

"He has a goal, an obsession, with getting Trump, and you're going to hear that," Blanche added. "I submit to you that he cannot be trusted."

Trump's lawyer says Stormy Daniels' claims are "false" in dramatic moment

Whether Stormy Daniels and Donald Trump actually had sex may be beside the point in this case, which deals with whether Trump falsified business records to cover up an attempt to unlawfully interfere with the 2016 election through the hush money payment to Daniels.

But Trump lawyer Todd Blanche still took his time in emphasizing Trump denies Daniels' claim. Paying Daniels for her agreement to not publicly spread "false – false – claims" about Trump isn't illegal, Blanche told the jurors.

Years before Donald Trump’s trial, FBI investigators uncovered flurries of calls between his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, and National Enquirer executives when scandalous stories were breaking.

One cluster of calls happened Oct. 8, 2016, the day after The Washington Post released the now-infamous "Access Hollywood" tape, while negotiations were under way to buy the silence of porn actress Stormy Daniels.

Cohen called David Pecker, CEO of the National Enquirer’s parent company, briefly at 7:39 p.m. and again four minutes later. Then Cohen got a call from Dylan Howard, the company’s chief content officer. After conferring with a Trump spokesperson, Cohen got a call from Pecker and then called Trump. Cohen got two more calls from Howard at 8:39 p.m. and 8:57 p.m.

Another group of calls erupted Nov. 4, 2016, before  The Wall Street Journal  reported the National Enquirer paid Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model, for her story about the affair and never published it.

Cohen recorded the conversation to show David Pecker that Trump planned to pay him back for buying McDougal's story, Colangelo said.

Prosecutor describes three-pronged conspiracy to interfere with 2016 election

Prosecutor Matthew Colangelo described to jurors a meeting between Donald Trump, his former lawyer Michael Cohen, and a tabloid publisher, David Pecker. The three agreed to a three-pronged conspiracy to interfere with the 2016 presidential election, Colangelo said:

• Pecker would be the campaign's "eyes and ears," reporting potentially harmful information to Cohen, who would work to keep it quiet. Colangelo described this as the "core" of the conspiracy.
• Pecker would publish flattering stories about Trump.
• Pecker would use his publications to attack Trump's political opponents.

Before jurors entered the courtroom, Judge Juan Merchan said that, should Trump testify, prosecutors would be able to inform jurors that Trump was found liable for violating state law by fraudulently inflating the value of his assets. That determination ties to his civil fraud case, in which Trump is appealing a $454 million judgment against him.

Merchan also said prosecutors could inform jurors that Trump was found liable for defaming New York writer E. Jean Carroll, even though Merchan didn't indicate they can inform jurors about Trump's liability for sexually abusing Carroll.

Merchan also said prosecutors can inform jurors that Trump was found to have violated a gag order twice in his civil fraud case. And prosecutors will be allowed to inform jurors of an agreement that the Trump Foundation would be dissolved as a result of an investigation into self-dealing transactions.

If Trump testifies and prosecutors seek to introduce those determinations, jurors will be instructed to only consider the determinations when it comes to evaluating Trump's credibility.

Who is Stormy Daniels?

Stormy Daniels , born Stephanie Clifford, is an adult film star.

Daniels claims she had an affair with Trump in 2006, months after Melania Trump gave birth to Barron Trump. Michael Cohen paid her $130,000 to stay quiet about the alleged affair ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Daniels sued to cancel the non-disclosure agreement signed 11 days before the election, which was  dismissed in 2020  She also  sued Trump for defamation  in 2018 over some of his tweets, but that lawsuit was also thrown out.

What is Trump on trial for?

Trump has pleaded not guilty to charges that he falsified business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels that was designed to unlawfully interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump denies Carroll's claim.

Donald Trump sharply criticized the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on Monday morning as opening arguments were set to get underway, telling reporters that the hush money case against him amounts to unfair election “interference.”

“Everybody knows it,” Trump said outside of court, claiming that the trial is preventing him from being on the campaign trail.”

“Fortunately, the poll numbers are very good. They've been going up because people understand what's going on. It's a witch hunt and it's a shame. And it comes out of Washington,” Trump said, without offering any proof.

There is no indication that anyone in Washington, including the Biden administration, has played any role in the first criminal prosecution of Trump on charges of paying hush money to two women just before the 2016 election who claimed to have had sex with him.

What happens if Trump is found guilty? Will he go to prison?

If Donald Trump is convicted on all counts in his  New York criminal hush money trial  that started last week, he could theoretically face more than a decade in prison.

But most legal experts who spoke to USA TODAY said such a dramatic outcome is unlikely. Instead, he would likely be sentenced to something between probation and four years in prison.

And he would probably still be out, free to campaign for president as the presumptive or actual 2024 Republican nominee, while his all-but-certain appeal was pending.

What is hush money?

Hush money  is a wide-ranging term used to refer to paying someone to not speak publicly about an issue. It's not necessarily illegal, so why is Donald Trump in court over a hush money case?

The former president isn’t actually charged with making a $130,000 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels in exchange for a non-disclosure agreement. Instead, he's accused of falsifying business records to hide the payment.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin  Bragg described the payments to Daniels  and another woman,  former Playboy model Karen McDougal , as part of a “catch-and-kill” strategy to prevent the women from telling their stories. But the criminal charges are that Trump falsified his company’s business records to conceal the payments.

Who is Karen McDougal?

Karen McDougal indirectly received a hush money payment in 2016 after claiming to have an affair with Donald Trump. Cohen funneled the money through the National Enquirer under a  "catch and kill" approach , paying the tabloid to buy rights to her story and prevent her from telling anyone else about it.

The National Enquirer, owned by American Media Inc., was  fined $187,500 by the Federal Election Commission  for paying McDougal $150,000 for exclusive rights to her story with the intent of influencing the election. McDougal  also sued the company . She has since spoken out about her  affair with Trump , saying it lasted for 10 months starting in 2006.

How long will Trump's trial last?

Donald Trump's  hush money trial  that begins Monday in Manhattan could last as long as eight weeks.

It is the first time a former president has been criminally charged, although Trump has now also been charged in three other criminal cases in other jurisdictions for attempting to overturn the 2020 election and hoarding classified documents after leaving office.

David Pecker , the former head of the National Enquirer’s parent company, is expected to be the first witness in Donald Trump’s hush money trial about how the company routinely paid for scandalous stories that it didn’t publish, under what others called a “catch-and-kill” strategy.

Pecker was president and CEO of American Media Inc. (AMI) in August 2015, when he met with Trump and his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, to “help deal with negative stories about Trump” by purchasing them and not publishing them, according to a Federal Election Commission agreement with the company.

After a lawyer for Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who claimed an affair with Trump, contacted the company, Pecker and Dylan Howard, the company’s vice president and chief content officer, notified Cohen, according to the FEC agreement.

In August 2016, the company McDougal $150,000 for her life story, including about any relationship with “any then-married man” and then didn’t publish the story, according to the FEC agreement.

Trump's $175 million appeal bond under scrutiny

While the hush money trial is underway Monday morning, Judge Arthur Engoron will be hearing arguments in a courthouse next door over whether Trump's $175 million appeal bond passes muster in his New York civil fraud case.

The bond, if accepted by Engoron, will prevent New York Attorney General Letitia James from seizing Trump's assets while his appeal over the $454 million judgment against him is pending. James is arguing that Trump hasn't demonstrated he provided enough collateral to truly back up the bond, which was provided by Knight Specialty Insurance Company.

The Knight company is owned by self-proclaimed Trump supporter and California billionaire Don Hankey .

An appeal bond functions as a guarantee that a judgment will be paid once the appeal is over, at least in the amount of the bond. A New York appeals court allowed Trump and his co-defendants to post just $175 million, instead of the full $464 million judgment they face – all but $10 million of which Trump faces personally.
