Freshman Plays Return to WPHS on Sunday
Photo Provided Practicing a scene from their upcoming play, “Homework Eats Dog and Other Woeful Tales” are Tif Ramos, Sydney Willson, Bri Zoeckler, Paytyn Heldreth, Dylan Sfakis, Jayden Clutter and Ariel Palmer.
WHEELING — Wheeling Park High School’s Introduction to Speech and Theater classes will present two one-act plays at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, in the Phyllis A. Beneke Theater.
The plays, “15 Reasons Not to Be in a Play” and “Homework Eats Dog and Other Woeful Tales,” both by Alan Haehnel, will provide an evening of fun entertainment for audiences of all ages.
“15 Reasons Not To Be in a Play” is about not being in a play, ironically expressed through a hilarious series of monologues, duets and ensemble scenes. From early traumas involving a glory-seeking elementary school teacher to possible disturbances in the global climate, this show keeps the audience guessing just what scenario will be next.
In “Homework Eats Dog and Other Woeful Tales,” science teacher Douglas Kobekeaneski shows that there’s nothing greater than “The Hour of Desperation,” that magical hour before his immensely important, grade-devastating assignment is due. Each year, his students frantically scramble to come up with their method of escape — and this year is no exception, as they trot out a litany of outrageous excuses, including the greatest of them all: “My homework ate my dog.”
Mrs. Isabella Droginske directs the plays and also teaches the Introduction to Speech and Theater classes. A tradition in the Fine and Performing Arts Department, the “freshman plays,” as they are known, allow incoming freshmen the opportunity to develop their acting skills. Freshmen plays are presented once each semester.
Tickets will be sold at the door for a $5 general admission.
