What's the Story?

BIOGRAPHY looks back on the lives of famous historical and popular figures. Earlier episodes in the long-running documentary series tended to feature more serious figures like Pope John Paul II and Diego Rivera, but in recent years the focus has shifted to Hollywood folks like Tom Hanks and Ron Howard . While early episodes were hosted by personalities like Peter Graves and Harry Smith, current installments are guided by voiceover. Interviews with the subject's family and friends -- along with personal photos and film footage -- combine to document each subject's personal history.

Is It Any Good?

While the show's tone is rather serious, its content errs on the light side. No exposés or incriminating photos here: This is jolly, fluffy background on the stars and history-makers people love. For example, the Ron Howard episode traced his life from his birth into a theater family to his days on The Andy Griffith Show and Happy Days to his present-day directing career. Howard's wife, Cheryl (his high school sweetheart!), gave viewers a sense of what was going on in Howard's head when he was trying to break into the directing field, while Henry Winkler , Andy Griffith , and Don Knotts all offered their impressions of Howard from his early days to the present.

While most Biography episodes focus on a single person, some installments look at a group -- like the cast of The Brady Bunch or fictional entities like The Phantom. For viewers with a particular interest in a famous person, these profiles can help round out your impression and offer tidbits of information that you might not already know. But people looking for a hard-hitting analysis of a person's life and contribution to society will have to look elsewhere.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about biographies. What would your biography look like? What aspects of your life would your profile focus on? What would you like to include, and what would you like to leave out? How complete a picture do you think this show paints of famous folks' lives? How do you think producers choose their subjects?

Katie Couric

American television journalist Katie Couric was the co-host of 'Today' throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, and in 2006, became the first woman to anchor 'CBS Evening News' alone.

katie couric

Who Is Katie Couric?

Katie Couric began her journalism career as an assistant at the ABC network. She went on to report for NBC, eventually becoming co-anchor of Today and one of the top personalities in the TV news business. Couric was named the first solo female anchor of CBS Evening News in 2006, and in 2012 she became the host of the ABC talk show Katie . Since early 2014, Couric has served as a global news anchor for Yahoo.

Aspiring Reporter

Born Katherine Anne Couric, on January 7, 1957, in Arlington, Virginia, Couric was the youngest of four children of John, a retired journalist and public relations executive, and his wife Elinor. Couric graduated from the University of Virginia in 1979 with a degree in American Studies. Right after college, she moved to Washington, D.C., to begin a career in television news reporting.

Couric's first job was as a desk assistant at ABC, where she worked under anchorman Sam Donaldson, among others. Shortly thereafter, she began working at the Washington bureau of the fledgling Cable News Network (CNN). For the next seven years, Couric worked at CNN bureaus around the country as a producer and, when she could, as an on-air reporter. In 1987, she returned to Washington and took a job as a reporter at an NBC affiliate station there.

In 1988, shortly before her marriage to Jay Monahan, a lawyer based in Washington, Couric was hired as the No. 2 reporter at the Pentagon for the Washington bureau of NBC News. Over the next three years, she covered the U.S. invasion of Panama and the Persian Gulf War from her Pentagon position, as well as from a newly-created post at NBC's morning show, Today . By early 1991, she had begun filling in as co-anchor of Today (alongside Bryant Gumbel) when Deborah Norville went on maternity leave. In April, NBC executives hired Couric to replace Norville, who had been blamed by some for the show's falling ratings.

'Today Show'

Beginning in the summer of 1993, Couric also cohosted another prime-time newsmagazine, Now, with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric . It was eventually absorbed into the more popular program Dateline , and Couric continued her duties on Today , which continued to solidify its hold on the top spot in the Nielsen ratings and expand the definition of a morning news program. For her part, Couric had become the undisputed star of morning television. In early 1997, Gumbel left Today and was replaced by Matt Lauer, who had served as the show's news anchor since 1994.

Husband's Death

Couric's incredible success with Today continued throughout the 1990s. In the summer of 1998, she signed a four-year contract extension with NBC for $28 million. Her $7 million yearly salary elevated her into the ranks of the top personalities in TV news, including prime-time anchors Diane Sawyer, Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather . That same year, however, Couric faced profound tragedy in her personal life: Monahan, then a legal analyst with NBC News, died in January following a six-month battle with colon cancer. He was 42.

After her husband's untimely death, Couric mounted an aggressive campaign to raise money for research and testing to fight colon cancer. As part of her efforts, Couric masterminded a two-week TV series to raise awareness of the disease, even undergoing an on-air colonoscopy herself to impress upon viewers the importance of testing. By the end of 2000, her campaign had raised more than $10 million.

In 2000, Couric published a children's book, The Brand New Kid , which topped the New York Times children's picture book best-seller list for three weeks. She followed in 2004 with another children's book, Blue Ribbon Day , and achieved best-selling status again in 2011 with The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons from Extraordinary Lives.

Making History

In January 2002, Couric signed a new contract with NBC for a reported $65 million over 4 1/2 years, which allowed her to stay at the helm of Today as well as explore other possibilities at the network. The deal made Couric the world's highest-paid TV personality.

Couric continued to make TV history in 2006: After 15 years with Today , she signed a deal to become the first woman to anchor CBS Evening News alone. In addition to her hosting duties, she agreed to contribute to the longstanding newsmagazine 60 Minutes and anchor prime-time specials for CBS.

Couric debuted as the solo evening news anchor for CBS on September 5, 2006—the first evening newscast to be simulcast live on the internet and local radio stations. Nearly 13.6 million viewers tuned in, bringing in the highest ratings for the show since February 1998. Couric won the Edward R. Murrow Award for best newscast in 2008 and 2009, but her overall ratings fell short of the network's expectations. Following her announcement that she was seeking to "engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling," she delivered her final CBS Evening News broadcast in May 2011.

Recent Years

Couric signed a multi-platform deal with ABC in June 2011, and the following year she began hosting a talk show called Katie . Its debut, on September 10, 2012, marked the most-watched inaugural show on daytime television since Dr. Phil was introduced in September 2002. However, interest in the program soon faded following its promising start, and her talk show was canceled after its second season.

Couric embarked on her new position as a global news anchor for Yahoo in early 2014. In this role, she undertook traditional anchor responsibilities of reporting on live events and conducting interviews, while also hosting the series World 3.0 and Now I Get It . In June 2015, it was announced that Couric had agreed to terms on a new deal with the internet giant.

Personal Life

Couric had two daughters with first husband Jay Monahan: Elinor Tully "Ellie" Monahan was born on July 23, 1991, and Caroline "Carrie" Couric Monahan was born on January 5, 1996. She began dating entrepreneur Brooks Perlin in 2006, but they went their separate ways in 2011.

In 2012, Couric went public with her relationship with financier John Molner. The pair got engaged the following year, and in June 2014, they tied the knot in a small ceremony held in East Hampton, New York.

In January 2018, more than a month after her former Today co-anchor Lauer was fired from the position over sexual misconduct accusations, Couric revealed her feelings about the situation to People .

“The whole thing has been very painful for me," said Couric. "The accounts I’ve read and heard have been disturbing, distressing and disorienting and it’s completely unacceptable that any woman at the Today show experienced this kind of treatment. ... I think I speak for many of my former colleagues when I say this was not the Matt we knew. Matt was a kind and generous colleague who treated me with respect."

WBNS timeline and notable personalities who worked there

WBNS 10 TV channel 10 studio building Twin Rivers Dr, Columbus, Ohio June 16, 2016. [Craig Holman/Dispatch]

• Jonathan Winters, comedian

• Rod Serling, "Twilight Zone" host

• Chuck White, first African-American TV personality in Ohio, famous for his role as "Mr. Tree" on the children's show "Luci's Toyshop"

• Dana Tyler, who went on to become WCBS–TV anchor of CBS' flagship station in New York

• Jack Hanna , who had his TV career start with "Hanna's Ark"

• Bob Orr , former CBS News senior correspondent in Washington, D.C.

WBNS Timeline

• October 1933: WCAH Radio is purchased by the Wolfe family, owners of The Columbus Dispatch and WBNS radio. With the intention of making this a television station, they change the station's call letters to those used for WBNS radio, derived from the historical Wolfe family businesses — banks, newspapers and shoes — hence, Wolfe's Banks News & Shoes.

• January 1948: With Channels 3 (now 4) and 6 already assigned to the Columbus market, The Wolfe family applies for an FCC license to operate WBNS Television on Channel 10. Ground is broken for the studio and transmitter building at 525 Olentangy River Rd. The station starts with 24,300 watts of power. The building is 142 by 62 feet.

WBNS radio had been a CBS affiliate for almost 20 years, so Channel 10 immediately joins the CBS television network.

• August 1948: The first antenna is erected — a 595-foot tower.

• October 1949:  Chet Long, the station's first anchor, reports the news throughout the day at WBNS Radio and arrives at the 10TV studios for his 7 p.m. evening televised newscast. Says Bill McCormick (10TV news personality, 1960s), "He was a major hit — even though he only sat behind his desk to tell viewers the news of the day without any script. He was so well informed after having reported the news so many times during the day that he had the ability to just tell it to us thousands of people watching TV. He was one of a kind."

• Oct. 5, 1949: Staff announcer Bill Pepper signs WBNS-TV on the air, uttering these 11 words: "This is WBNS television signing on for its first broadcast day." Pepper remains the solo anchor at 11 p.m. until Roy Briscoe joins him as co-anchor in 1964. Pepper is replaced by Lou Forrest in 1975.

WBNS-TV inaugurates its regular programming with coverage of the 1949 World Series between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers. This was a historic game: In the ninth inning of Game 5, the Ebbets Field lights were turned on for the first time. The first scheduled Series night game would not be held until 1971.

At first WBNS-TV didn't sign on until 3 p.m. That was the time movie theaters opened and it was thought no one would be watching TV before then.

• 1950s: The 1950s is a period of new programming that is keyed to local interests. "Look to Lazarus" is a 30-minute daily daytime show featuring new products, celebrity guests and a different set each day. "Homemaker’s Hobnob" fills an hour in the mornings with talk and music featuring Bob Marvin (who later starred as Flippo the Clown ). All Cleveland Browns games are filmed and edited down to a 30-minute program once a week. "Haft's Wrestling" airs once a week, complete with a live remote from ringside in Memorial Hall, the first home of COSI. "Aunt Fran's TV Babysitters"(Fran Norris) entertains young viewers.

• October 1950 : WBNS-TV becomes the first television station in central Ohio to broadcast in color with the CBS Saturday afternoon football games.

• 1950: Bob McMaster is hired as WBNS-TV's first weatherman. He is an engineer at Battelle Memorial Institute with no previous broadcast experience, but gained basic weather knowledge while studying lightning for the Army during WWII.

• August 1951: Tom Gleba signs on as "Interplanetary Host" for WBNS-TV's "Flash Gordon" series. Known as "Captain Z," he goes on to become the noon news broadcaster and eventual public service director.

• 1955: WBNS TV's antenna height is increased from 595 feet to 839 feet. The tower is the tallest structure in Columbus at the time.

• 1956: The first station news vehicle is a station wagon that carries bulky equipment to accommodate 16mm film cameras and 35mm still cameras.

• 1957: Chuck White makes history as the first African-American television personality in Ohio. He later becomes a 50-year veteran of WBNS TV. He hosts "Gather Round," a folk music program that airs Sunday afternoons. He goes on to become the voice of the puppets on "Luci's Toyshop" and eventually co-anchors the 7 p.m. news with Chet Long.

WBNS-10TV gets more powerful, as visual power is increased to 315,000 watts. The station can now deliver a signal to a radius of 65 miles in all directions. Also during this year, WBNS is the first TV station in Ohio to install a teleprompter.

• 1959: Joe Holbrook is named chief meteorologist and is known for using a black marking pen to outline weather trends on a map.

• 1960s: Variety programming is the trend as the 1960s usher in live musical variety programs like Flippo the Clown, starring Bob Marvin (aka Flippo the Clown) and Chuck White, and subsequently another musical program called "Chuck White Presents," which airs at 10 p.m. "Luci’s Toyshop," the premiere children’s show of the early 1960s, features Luci Gasaway (Van Leeuwen) and her puppets, whose characters are brought to life by White, who goes on to become 10TV's Public Affairs Director.

• 1967: 10TV begins using color locally. The first live local color telecast out of the WBNS TV studio features Flippo the Clown.

• 1970: First Anchor Team: Tom Ryan and Roy Briscoe are the first co-anchors to deliver WBNS-10TV newscasts.

• 1972: "Luci's Toyshop," a live, locally produced children's show that had aired weekday mornings on WBNS TV since 1960, ends its run.

• 1974 : Fritz Peerenboom, "the Nite Owl," comes to 10TV and hosts Nite Owl Theater until 1991.

• 1975 : Lou Forrest replaces Bill Pepper.

• Aug. 21, 1975: WBNS-TV's first microwave live news broadcast involves the first live truck in the market. Dubbed the "RapidCam," the truck brings live reports from the Ohio State Fair to viewers.

• 1976: Marlynn Singleton becomes the first female anchor at the station.

• 1979: WBNS is the first local TV station and second in the state to acquire a news helicopter. It is called Sky Cam and its original pilot was Robert "Terry" Alt, who would continue flying with WBNS-10TV for more than 30 years.

• 1980: WBNS programming debuts the broadcast career of Jack Hanna, who appears on WBNS-TV with his daughter Kathy and the zoo animals on "Hanna’s Ark."

• June 1980: Jerry Revish makes his debut on 10TV.

• July 23, 1980: Dave Kaylor joins 10TV on the anchor desk, replacing Dave Layman as news anchor. Kaylor is first teams up with Lou Forrest and subsequently co-anchors the news with Dana Tyler in 1986.

• 1981 : Dana Tyler begins as a WBNS reporter.

• 1985:  Bob Orr, who worked as a reporter and anchor for 10TV, is paired with newcomer Carol Costello.

• 1987: The first satellite truck makes reporting possible from any location. Dana Tyler and Dave Kaylor start a statewide road show, "Heart of Ohio," in the truck, setting a national precedent for local stations.

• 1991: Andrea Cambern begins a 20-year reporting and anchor career with WBNS-TV.

• March 8, 1993: Angela Pace begins anchoring at Channel 10. Previously an anchor for WCMH-TV, she is first an anchor with Dave Kaylor, then with Jerry Revish, and remains on-air until 2006. Afterward she continues as the station's director of community affairs.

April 1993: During the Lucasville prison riot, inmates allow only 10TV anchor Bob Orr and 10TV engineer Pat Ingram inside.

• 1995: The station launches Columbus' first television website, then known as www.wbns10tv.com and later shortened to www.10TV.com .

• May 1997: WBNS-10TV helps launch the Ohio News Network, one of the first 24-hour statewide news networks in the country.

• June 9, 1997: Angie Kucharski becomes the first female news director in the Columbus TV market.

• 1998: WBNS debuts a new "Chopper 10" helicopter: The Bell 407, equipped with an ultra-sensitive FLIR camera, produces better photographs with less light and crisper pictures.

• Aug. 18, 2005: Dave Kaylor retires after 25 years on the anchor desk. A farewell special becomes the most-watched show of the night in the Columbus TV market.

• July 3, 2006: Chris Bradley signs on as chief meteorologist.

• Aug. 5, 2006: Chuck White announces he will retire at the end of the year.

• Aug. 31, 2006: Angela Pace ends 27 years as a newscaster and becomes director of community affairs.

• Nov. 7, 2008: Anchorwoman Heather Pick loses a courageous and public battle with breast cancer at the age of 38. She appears on the noon newscast for the last time on Oct. 6 from home, wearing a pink wig in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

• February 2009: The station becomes the first broadcaster in Ohio to launch mobile broadcasting, giving consumers the chance to see 10TV programming on digital television-enabled phones.

• June 12, 2009: WBNS launches a new local weather channel, Doppler 10 Now, on the station's Digital Channel 10.2. It combines the resources of WBNS with national weather provider AccuWeather, and operates 24 hours a day. This is the station's first full-time multicast channel.

WBNS also says goodbye to analog broadcasting as TV stations throughout America power down their analog signals. This is a move made by the FCC to open up bandwidth for first responders and mobile technologies. After the switch, stations are able to split — or multicast — their digital signal, thus creating an opportunity for new programming.

• Jan. 3, 2011: 10TV adds an early morning newscast, expanding its weekday morning newscast to 2½ hours, starting at 4:25 a.m.

• June 2012: Following the departure of Andrea Cambern in May, WBNS welcomes Kristyn Hartman to the main anchor desk with Jerry Revish.

• Aug. 31, 2012: Statewide cable news channel ONN — Ohio News Network — signs off forever at noon, bringing an end to a 15-year run. It is shutting down because "the cable news consumer has many different methods of gathering news and information compared to when ONN was launched in 1997," says Tom Griesdorn, president and general manager of ONN and of WBNS-TV, in a message to employees. ONN has 45 employees, the vast majority of whom work at 770 Twin Rivers Dr. in a facility shared with WBNS-TV.

• July 5, 2017 : Yolanda Harris joins WBNS-TV as a news anchor, replacing Kristyn Hartman, who left the station in March after five years. Harris, a Columbus native, had a combined 24 years at WSYX-TV (Channel 6) and WTTE-TV (Channel 28) in Columbus.

• Nov. 19, 2018: Eugene C. "Gene" D'Angelo Jr. dies at age 90. He served as chairman and president of WBNS-TV from 1972 to 1993.

• Dec. 5, 2018 : Channel 10 chief meteorologist Chris Bradley dies at his home in Worthington after a 20-month battle with acute myeloid leukemia. He was 53.

Biography (TV program)

Biography is an American documentary television series and media franchise created in the 1960s by David L. Wolper and owned by A&E Networks since 1987. Each episode depicts the life of a notable person with narration, on-camera interviews, photographs, and stock footage . The show originally ran in syndication in 1962–1964, and in 1979, on A&E from 1987 to 2006, and on The Biography Channel (later Bio, now FYI ) from 2006 to 2012. After a five-year hiatus, the franchise was relaunched in 2017. Over the years, the Biography media franchise has expanded domestically and internationally, spinning off several cable television channels, a website, a children's program, a line of books and records, and a series of made-for-TV movies, specials, and miniseries, among other media properties. Biography has won a Peabody Award (1962) and three Emmy Awards (1997, 1999, 2002).

Syndicated series

1987 a&e acquisition, franchise expansion, 2017 revival, subjects profiled, in popular culture, external links.

Biography began as an early 1960s syndicated television series produced by David Wolper and narrated by Mike Wallace . It won a Peabody Award, launched Wallace's journalism career, and became a standard in biography films, widely shown in classrooms. After a one-year revival in 1979, the show returned on A&E Networks in 1987. In 1990, A&E began producing new episodes, and expanded the show into a multimedia franchise. By the turn of the century, Biography became A&E's "flagship" program, winning three Emmy Awards, growing from one night per week to seven, and spawning its own cable television channel, several spin-off shows, a website, made-for-TV movies, mini-series, books, audio books, records, and even a board game. The show's ratings eventually slipped and its airtime was reduced to one night per week, then exclusive to The Biography Channel (now FYI). Production of new episodes ceased in 2011 and Biography was almost entirely off the air by 2012. In 2017, A&E relaunched the Biography franchise with a series of TV specials and miniseries. The original Biography was produced by David Wolper and Jack Haley Jr. and narrated by Mike Wallace, who at the time was just beginning his award-winning journalism career. The show featured no interviews, consisting instead of a half hour of film clips, newsreel footage, still photographs and recordings. [3]

Production began in 1961 and the show was distributed in syndication [3] by Official Films , [2] premiering in February 1962. [3] The 1960s series profiled world leaders ( Winston Churchill ), contemporary U.S. politicians ( Fiorello H. La Guardia , Joseph McCarthy ), athletes ( Babe Ruth and Knute Rockne ), and other 20th-century notables, including generals, authors, scientists, actors, and all the modern U.S. Presidents. [3] [4] [5]

The program became popular in syndication, and in 1962, won a Peabody Award (Television Education), the first of several for both Wolper and Wallace. Biography has been credited with turning Wallace's journalism career around, and in 1963, he left to join The CBS Morning News with Mike Wallace , and, later, 60 Minutes. Biography stopped releasing new episodes in 1964, although some episodes continued to be used as educational films in classrooms, became standards for filmed biographies of the persons profiled, and it played for decades in syndication. [3] [4] [5] The series was briefly revived for syndication in 1979 with host David Janssen , profiling Idi Amin and Walt Disney , among others. [3]

The Arts & Entertainment Network (now A&E), a joint venture started in 1984 by ABC , NBC , the Hearst Corporation , and the Rockefeller Group , acquired the broadcast rights to Biography and began airing the show on Tuesday nights at 8pm beginning on April 6, 1987, with Peter Graves as host. In the words of one observer, A&E's Biography "picked up where Wolper left off." [4]

In 1990, A&E acquired the rights to the Biography trademark and library, and began producing new episodes of the show, which expanded the subjects from historical figures to contemporary figures, including political leaders and popular celebrities, and which changed the program from one that reported history to one that recorded it as it unfolded. A&E also added on-camera interviews to the Biography format. [6] [7] [8]

In 1994, A&E expanded the show from one night per week to five (every weeknight at 8pm) and commissioned over 100 hours of new programming. Journalist Jack Perkins joined the show as an alternate host along with Graves. For the 1995–96 season, A&E expanded Biography again, adding a sixth night, Biography This Week , which profiled someone from the previous weeks' news, such as Yitzak Rabin , George Burns , and Gene Kelly . In the mid-1990s, A&E expanded Biography into a media franchise , including multiple cable channels, a website, a monthly magazine, home videos, books for adults and children, audiobooks, music CDs, CD-ROMs, several spin-off shows, mini-series, and made-for-TV movies, and even a board game called "Who Am I? The Biography Game." [6] [7]

In January 1995, A&E launched The History Channel , followed in November by The History Channel U.K. , which included a British version of Biography with a British host. By 1996, its tenth year on A&E, Biography had achieved its highest ratings yet, drawing over 1.5 million viewers, [9] six nights per week, and received its first Emmy nominations (The Presidents Award and Outstanding Informational Series). [10] A&E started producing approximately 130 hours of new programming each year, and expanded the franchise into other media. Barnes & Noble began selling Biography videos in its 400 stores. In the summer of 1996, A&E launched Biography.com. In the fall, a Saturday-morning children's version, Biography for Kids , was released. [6] [8] [11] [12]

The next year, Biography won its first Emmy Award (Outstanding Informational Series), and was nominated in two other categories. [10] The same year, Biography was allowed to interview sitting First Lady Hillary Clinton for an episode profiling billionaire Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton . Also in 1997, A&E released Biography audio tapes, and replaced its eight-year-old A&E Monthly magazine with Biography magazine. Circulation started at 100,000 in 1997 and grew for several years (to 270,000 by early 1998; [13] 367,000 by mid-1998; 528,000 by 1999; and, 700,000 by 2001). Crown Publishing Group , a subsidiary of Random House , began publishing a line of 200-page Biography paperbacks in 1997, beginning with books on Muhammad Ali , Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis , Ronald Reagan , and Pope John Paul II . [14] [8] [15]

In 1998, Biography was airing twice a day, six days a week. The episode profiling Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, aired on three separate time slots on Sunday, June 21, 1998, became the show's highest-rated episode up to that point. A&E released Biography Movies , featuring subjects such as P.T. Barnum , Lillian Hellman , and Dashiell Hammett . Bill Kurtis hosted a spin-off show, Biography: American Justice , and a series of Biography record albums by artists who had been profiled on the show, including Dean Martin , Judy Garland , Nat King Cole , Mel Torme , and Lena Horne , was released by EMI -Capitol Entertainment Properties. [13] In November, A&E created a spin-off network called The Biography Channel (now Bio Channel/FYI ) featuring historical figures and current political and social leaders. [6] [8] [12] [16]

By 1999, Biography had profiled 600 people. It won its second Emmy Award (Outstanding Sound Mixing For Nonfiction Programming) [10] and was on television in some incarnation seven nights per week, including an "international-figure-personality-of-the-week," Biography International. That year's episode profiling Ron Howard was viewed in 3.5 million homes, becoming a new Biography record. [17] Journalist Harry Smith (previously with CBS's This Morning ) joined Biography as the primary host, though Peter Graves and Jack Perkins continued to appear on the show. [6] [18]

By the end of the century, Biography had profiled over 800 people, and on October 1, 2000, A&E Networks expanded its British partnership with Sky UK with the launch of a UK market Biography Channel. [19]

Biography ' s ratings declined 15% from 2000 to 2001, and another 17% from 2001 to 2002, before increasing 6% in 2003. Despite the decrease in ratings, by 2002, Biography won its third Emmy Award (Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series), and marked its 1,000th profile. [7] [10] [20]

A&E responded to the ratings decline by changing Biography ' s management personnel and launching a marketing campaign centering on photographs taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz of well-known subjects that had been profiled on Biography , including Jerry Seinfeld , Muhammad Ali, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford . [20] [21]

"We produced a show on the Green River Valley killer in a week," O'Hearn says. When Katharine Hepburn , John Ritter and Gregory Peck died, up-to-date shows about their lives were televised if not on the night they passed away, the following night. —   Variety , quoting Biography Vice President Didi O'Hearn, 2002 [20]

In 2002, host Harry Smith left to join CBS's The Early Show . A&E began reducing the number of nights Biography aired starting 2003, when Neil Ross became the show's final host, narrating episodes on Elizabeth Taylor and Elvis Presley . [3] [22] [23] The growth of Biography ' s magazine circulation slowed in 2002 and declined 9% in 2003. In 2004, A&E scaled back Biography magazine from monthly to quarterly publication. [3] [24]

By 2006, Ross had left the show and Biography was airing only once a week, usually on Friday nights with three back-to-back episodes. A&E removed Biography from its lineup in August, making new episodes of the show exclusively available on The Biography Channel . Its first year on The Biography Channel featured 64 hours of new programming, including episodes on the Onassis family , Jamie Oliver , Russell Simmons , George Lopez , Anthony Hopkins , Grace Slick , Elmore Leonard and Olivia Newton-John . The following year, The Biography Channel was rebranded "Bio." In 2008, Biography released a documentary, Johnny Cash 's America , together with a companion DVD/CD package published by Legacy Recordings containing an unreleased recitation by the singer entitled "I Am the Nation." [3] [25] [26]

The last new episode aired in 2011, and the show ended its run in 2012. In 2014, A&E replaced its underperforming Bio channel with The FYI Network and partnered with digital publisher SAY Media . SAY Media began operating Biography.com, while A&E continued producing short-form videos for the website. [27]

In 2017, A&E Networks relaunched the franchise with a set of two-hour specials and mini-series for three of its channels, A&E , History and Lifetime . Biography returned to A&E on June 28, 2017, with The Notorious Life of Biggie Smalls . A&E announced that it would produce up to 40 hours of new episodes as part of the relaunch, including features on John Gotti , Tupac Shakur , Vladimir Putin , Elizabeth Smart , Mike Tyson , and David Koresh . [11] [27]

The original, early 1960s syndicated Biography was narrated by Mike Wallace, who won his first Peabody Award on the show, and launched his journalism career. Wallace left in 1963 to join The CBS Morning News with Mike Wallace , and later, 60 Minutes . [3] [4] [5]

Actor David Janssen hosted a short-lived 1979 revival of the show on CBS. [3] [28]

Actor Peter Graves hosted Biography on A&E starting in 1987, and he was joined in 1994 by journalist Jack Perkins as an alternate host, when the show expanded from one night per week to five. [7] [14]

Where else could you find maybe on three successive nights the stories of Robert E. Lee , Gypsy Rose Lee and Bruce Lee ? —   Host Harry Smith, as quoted by The Hartford Courant , 2002 [7]

In 1999, after reportedly trying without success to recruit Charlie Gibson (who was then leaving ABC's Good Morning America ) to replace Graves and Perkins, A&E named journalist Harry Smith, previously with CBS's This Morning , as the primary host of Biography , although Graves and Perkins continued to have a role with the series. [6] [18]

Smith left in 2002 to join CBS's The Early Show , and was replaced by Neil Ross . Ross left in 2006, and A&E produced Biography as an unhosted show. [11]

Biography has profiled over 1,000 subjects, ranging from " Moses to Mozart to Madonna ," in the words of host Harry Smith, [7] and as of 2018, Biography.com claims to contain over 7,000 biographical profiles on its website. [29] The most-watched episodes profiled Ron Howard , the Gambino crime family , Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, Andre the Giant , and Sam Walton . [6] [17] [28]

Biography has been described as "an undisputed phenom," [11] "one of cable television's most respected programs," [8] "one of the most popular series on cable TV," [3] "the belle of the Nielsen ball," [26] and "the most pervasive series of history films found in classroom libraries." [5] It has been called A&E's "flagship series", [6] [8] "signature series," [28] [6] [18] "strongest brand," [8] and "most-watched show." [18] In 2002, a writer for The Hartford Courant asked, "Is there anybody who doesn't like, or at the very least hasn't stopped to watch, A&E's Biography ?" [7]

Biography has won a Peabody Award and three Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Awards (Emmy) Awards : Outstanding Informational Series in 1997, Outstanding Sound Mixing For Nonfiction Programming in 1999, and Outstanding Informational Series in 2002. The show has been nominated for 16 other Emmy Awards: The Presidents Award (1996–1997), Outstanding Informational Series (1996), Outstanding Individual Achievement Informational Programming (1997), Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series (1998–2000, 2003–09, 2011), Outstanding Picture Editing For Nonfiction Programming (1999), and Outstanding Informational Series (2001). [10] [33] [34]

Not all reviews have been positive. The same Hartford Courant writer criticized the early 1960s version of the show for focusing on "great men". [7] A writer for The New York Times described Biography as "skipping easily, and often superficially" from one subject to the next. [28] Variety has reviewed some episodes as "disappointingly routine...marred by errors and omissions," [32] and "suffer[ing] tunnel vision." [35] An episode on Fidel Castro was criticized as having "a distinct anti-Castro edge by Mike Wallace." [5] The Dwight Eisenhower Presidential Library includes a copy of a 1962 Biography episode featuring Eisenhower with the notation, "There are some simplifications of facts and condensation of events." [36] A 2018 Salt Lake Tribune TV critic wrote "the producers of Warren Jeffs : Prophet of Evil should have been more careful" to avoid confusing the LDS Church with the FLDS Church "through careless editing." [37]

[46]

Biography has been a category on the television game show Jeopardy! . [6] In 2000, the NBC sitcom Just Shoot Me! did an episode called " A&E Biography: Nina Van Horn ". The episode was shot in the style of A&E's Biography , and focused on the life of one of the show's main characters, Nina Van Horn. The episode featured interviews with the other characters of the show and multiple special guest stars, including Don Henley , Jerry Hall , Sydney Pollack , Pat Sajak , Vanna White , and Buddy Hackett . The episode also included an introduction, conclusion, and voiceover provided by then-host Harry Smith. [47]

Jamie Yuccas is a two-time ‘Emmy Award’ winning news anchor, who is currently corresponding for CBS News.

Who is Jamie Yuccas?

Yuccas is a journalism graduate from the University of Minnesota. After graduating in 2003, she began working as a weekend anchor for the Fox-affiliated channel KTTC/KXLT in Rochester, Minnesota.

Then, from 2004 to 2011, she worked in various positions, such as the primary news anchor, reporter, and producer at the WBBH-TV in Fort Myers, Florida. Later, she was the weekend morning news anchor at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from 2011 to 2013. After that, she worked as the main morning news anchor of WCCO-TV between 2013 to 2015. During the time, Yuccas also did occasional reporting on  CBS This Morning ,  CBS Evening News  and initiated weather-related briefs for WBBM, KCBS, and WFOR channels.

Subsequently, in 2015 she joined the CBS network as a correspondent from Los Angeles. There, she covered important topics such as the Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando, the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, and the 2016 presidential campaign.

In addition to that, Yuccas handled the CBS reporting of  Derek Chauvin’s case  from Minneapolis. Chauvin was the police officer who got prosecuted and convicted for the death of  George Floyd . She also conducted an exclusive interview with one of the non-deliberating jurors of the trial.

In 2021, Yuccas went to Tokyo to cover the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Yuccas was born to an Irish mother, Karen Yuccas. She was raised in Twin Cities, Minnesota. Her birthday falls on 3 August. She was born in 1982.

After high school, she enrolled at the University of Minnesota in 2000. Then, she graduated the four years spanned Bachelor of Arts in Journalism course within three years.

Family Inspiration

Yuccas credits her mother for cheering on her and supporting her whenever there were downfalls in her life. Similarly, she admires her maternal grandparents for teaching her about love in relationships. In a heartfelt Instagram post in 2021, she wished St. Patrick’s Day to her Irish grandparents and wrote about their memory.

She captioned, “Whenever my grandmother was in a bad mood or threw a fit, my grandfather would just look at her lovingly and say to us ‘Isn’t she cute?’ They were the best and taught me about faith and unconditional love. I miss them, especially on St. Patrick’s Day.”

After graduating college in 2003, Yuccas joined the Fox-affiliated sister station KTTC/KXLT in Rochester, Minnesota. She worked there as a weekend anchor and reporter, produced and hosted weekend evening newscasts, and also was the primary fill-in anchor.

Subsequently, in 2004, she began working at WBBH-TV in Fort Myers, Florida as a primary news anchor, reporter, and producer. There, she anchored the 4 pm, 5:30 pm, and 11 pm broadcasts. She was also in charge of breaking news coverage, including national disasters, significant storms, and the Gulf Oil Spill.

Then, in 2011, Yuccas started working as the weekend morning news anchor at CBS-owned WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There, she was also the main fill-in anchor for primary newscasts. During that time, she also conducted the coverage of Hurricane Sandy for WCBS.

In 2013, she was promoted to main morning anchor of the station. Alongside, she delivered breaking reports for  CBS This Morning  and the  CBS Evening News . In addition to that, she also gave weather-related live reporting for WBBM, KCBS, and WFOR channels.

Eventually, in 2015, she joined CBS News as a Los Angeles correspondent. She was responsible for reporting, producing, and developing news and feature articles. She also took over high-profile topics of the network, including the Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando, the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, and the 2016 presidential campaign.

Derek Chauvin Case

Among her high-profile covering was the 2020 trial of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who was convicted for the death of George Floyd in May of 2020.

She was the lead reporter and correspondent of CBS at the time. She covered the entire trial and proceedings of the case that happened under Minneapolis State’s jurisdiction during March of 2020.

Later, Yuccas also conducted an exclusive interview with an  alternate juror  of the trial. The juror, numbered by the court as 96, was not involved in the verdict but witnessed the entire trial. Her interview was aired on  CBS This Morning.

In the interview,  Yuccas  asked bout the evidence and experts presented by the prosecution, which made the jury deem Chauvin as  guilty of all charges .

Few days earlier, Yuccas had made an  Instagram  post on her first-hand reaction to the verdict and had posted her subsequent tweet on the conviction of Chauvin on all three alleged counts.

She also added a personal message on the issue, which she claimed needed to be looked through by everyone. “There is more work to do and I am feeling a lot of different emotions. This never should have happened in the first place. I hope the verdict keeps the conversation going on how we can all do better, be better listeners, and treat others how we want to be treated.”

Tokyo Olympics 2021

In addition to the trial, Yuccas was sent to Tokyo, Japan, for CBS’s Olympics coverage.

From the official initiation of the games on 23 July 2021 and its closing on 8 August 2021, Yuccas reported from Tokyo on the happenings of the competition. She also made an additional impact review of the game’s negative stimulus on the pandemic spread on not only the city but the entire nation of Japan.

Awards and Recognition

Before joining the CBS, Yuccas had already bagged two ‘Emmy Awards’ and one ‘Florida Associated Press Award.’

She had won the ‘Associated Press’ award for a feature piece on a U.S. Marshals Operation. Followed by that, one of her ‘Emmy Award’ was for her 2012 Hurricane Sandy reporting.

Yuccas was married to a New York Sales representative of Starkey Hearing, John Sheen. They were married in 2007 and got a divorce after ten years in 2017.

What’s on CBS?

Find your cbs channel number.

The channel number of CBS varies by city and by whether you have a cable or satellite provider (or use an antenna). There are over 200 local CBS TV stations across the country, with at least one in every state, including the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Who carries CBS? The Eye is everywhere.

Below, we’ve listed the CBS channel numbers and available providers for a handful of major cities—from DISH to Spectrum, you can find what channel CBS is on for nearly every major provider. If your hometown or state isn’t included, check out CBS’s official stations and affiliates directory .

Data effective as of post date. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Get CBS with cable or satellite TV

With most cable and satellite providers, local channels like CBS are included with all plans, from the least expensive up to fully loaded packages. Here are the basic TV plans that carry CBS stations:

Basic ($20.00/mo.)

TV Select ($69.99/mo.)

Basic TV ($35.00/mo.)

ENTERTAINMENT ($69.99/mo.)

America’s Top 120 ($84.99/mo.)

Data as of publish date. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

With Spectrum, Xfinity, and Optimum, you can also bundle internet and home phone service with your TV. DIRECTV and DISH don’t have their own internet or phone services, but they offer “bundle” specials with outside internet providers in select areas.

Find out which TV and internet providers are available near you

Get cbs with an antenna.

You don’t necessarily need a cable or satellite subscription to get CBS—or any other local channel for that matter. With so many affiliate stations in the U.S., receiving a CBS station is easy nearly anywhere if you have an antenna.

Here are two digital HD indoor and outdoor antennas we recommend at CableTV.com:

  • Mohu Leaf (25-mile range)—approximately $18
  • 1byone Indoor Antenna (120-mile range)—approximately $26

Data as of post date. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Check out our cord-cutter antennas guide to see more of our top over-the-air antenna picks.

Get CBS with live TV streaming services

Internet-based live TV streaming services are cheaper than cable or satellite providers like DIRECTV in most cases, but they don’t always have local stations like CBS.

For example: Hulu + Live TV, a favorite here at CableTV.com, features CBS content only on demand in most areas, not live. Another big name in live TV streaming, Sling TV, doesn’t carry any CBS stations.

Livestreaming TV services that do play nice with CBS include these providers:

($72.99/mo.)

DIRECTV STREAM

($69.99–$159.99/mo.)

($32.99–$99.99/mo.)

Interested in a streaming service? Visit our TV streaming guide to learn more about these services.

Get CBS with Paramount+

Data effective as of post date. Compatible device and internet connection required. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

If you want nothing but CBS, there’s Paramount+ . It’s a streaming app that features nearly all of CBS’s current content, exclusive originals like Star Trek: Discovery , and shows from networks including Nickelodeon and MTV.

The Paramount+ With SHOWTIME plan also carries your live local CBS station, while channels like CBS Sports HQ, CBS Sports Golazo Network, and ET Live are available to all subscribers. Hit series like Yellowstone and The Big Bang Theory (for one big Bazinga! of an example) aren’t available on Paramount+, however, since they’re currently Peacock and Max exclusives.

If you want to try Paramount+, the app is compatible with Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, iOS/Android, PlayStation, and Xbox devices.

CBS is the most popular network in America for a reason: it has hit shows across genres. Sure, most of CBS’s slate is made up of procedural law dramas and laugh-tracked sitcoms, but that’s not all there is to the network—here’s some of what CBS currently airs.

What’s on CBS Sports?

CBS Sports, the sports division of CBS (obviously), covers pro and college football, soccer, golf, tennis, bull riding, and a little thing known as NCAA basketball on the network. Wins for the ages, as star CBS Sports announcer Jim Nantz would say.

CBS Sports shares the broadcast schedule with regular CBS programming, so it’s mostly consigned to the weekends (with the exception of the NCAA Tournament ). If you want 24/7 sports, there’s CBS Sports Network, CBS’s cable channel, which is available on most cable, satellite, and live TV streaming services.

Here’s some of what you’ll find on CBS Sports:

  • NCAA Tournament
  • Road to the Final Four
  • Super Bowl (rotating years)
  • College football
  • PGA Tour golf
  • World TeamTennis
  • Davis Cup tennis
  • Professional Bull Riders
  • WNBA basketball
  • NWSL soccer
  • UEFA soccer

What’s CBS?

Launched in 1927—yes, there was TV back then—CBS is the most-watched broadcast network in the U.S. (hence the eyeball logo). Formerly known as the Columbia Broadcasting System, it’s home to TV hits like Survivor , Ghosts , and three NCIS series, as well as 48 Hours , CBS Sports, and The Grammys .

We should also mention dumb guilty pleasures Big Brother and Undercover Boss —there, done. We can’t live on Face the Nation and 60 Minutes alone, right?

What to Know

Utah has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They and the Indiana State Sycamores are set to clash at 7:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Hinkle Fieldhouse in a Pac-12 postseason contest. The stakes are high as both teams are all in, both fighting to extend their postseason success.

Utah earned some postseason bragging rights after a successful outing on Wednesday. Everything went their way against VCU as Utah made off with a 74-54 win.

Among those leading the charge was Deivon Smith, who dropped a triple-double on 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. He has been hot recently, having posted ten or more assists the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Gabe Madsen, who scored 18 points.

Meanwhile, Indiana State entered their tilt with Cincinnati with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. They secured an 85-81 W over the Bearcats on Tuesday.

Indiana State's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Robbie Avila led the charge by scoring 22 points along with six assists and five rebounds. Avila's performance made up for a slower game against Minnesota last Sunday. Jayson Kent was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with seven rebounds.

Utah's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-14. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 85.4 points per game. As for Indiana State, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matches, which provided a nice bump to their 31-6 record this season.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as Utah and Indiana State are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Utah hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 78.3 points per game. However, it's not like Indiana State struggles in that department as they've been averaging 84.5. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Utah is hoping to beat the odds on Tuesday, as the experts think they're headed for a loss. They might be worth a quick bet since they've covered the spread the last three times they've played.

Indiana State is a 3.5-point favorite against Utah, according to the latest college basketball odds .

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 3.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

The oddsmakers are expecting fireworks from the offense and set the over/under at a high 163.5 points.
