Start before the start

Think back to when you were hired at your current job. When did you sign your offer letter? When did you start? Was there radio silence between those dates? Was there an email from HR? What did this email say? Every new hire expects to go through an HR orientation when they first arrive. Will the HR orientation take 90 minutes or a full nine hours? How much information will be covered? What questions will I need to ask? These are all unknowns new hires may have concerns about. Millennials have a reputation that they are either too distracted or disloyal to stick to an organization. However, recent surveys suggest that all they need is a purpose-driven organization. If they can identify with your cause, they actually are quite a loyal bunch!

As an HR practitioner your role in attracting and retaining such talent, and the role of the CEO in providing this enabling environment can well be a good presentation topic for your next HR board meeting.

8. Creating an Engaged Workforce

Engaged workforce as a presentation topic works very well at all levels.

You have an opportunity over here to talk about a variety of aspects that go into engaging your workforce such as progressive and inclusive policies, diversity management, the role of sports, off-sites, etc.

You might want to stress certain productivity numbers that the industry has experienced when working with an engaged workforce. We believe that this topic can go as niche or wide as you would prefer.

9. Open Offices – boon or bane?

HR teams across the world have often been sold the concept of open offices over closed cabin environments.

It seems logical that the more open the office, the less the hierarchy. Yet does that also mean more distraction, less productivity?

This is a presentation topic that can help you open up a lot of room for an active discussion with your audience. Is there a formula for success to open offices? Why do some industries or sectors have more success w.r.t to these open formats?

Again as an HR head or student, you would have unique experiences that will make for a great presentation.

10. Encouraging a work-life balance at a startup

Start-up culture is something that still is a hot topic at most HR seminars. It is usually this unique time in an organization where the organization is still figuring out what suits its employees best.

HR professionals can use this PowerPoint presentation topic to both share and invite ideas on how work-balance can be maintained, and what is needed in their organizations as they move along the growth curve.

11. Employee Volunteering – Role of HR or CSR?

Another great topic is the role volunteering plays in an organization and which team really needs to front this. Since Corporate Social Responsibility teams are often merged with the Communication teams there can be a difference in the approach.

HR heads have an opportunity here to dissect their role as employee engagement custodians and how & if they see volunteering as part of this mandate.

12. Importance of an Ethics Committee

Do you need an ethics committee for your organization? Usually, well yes! However, is the firm at too nascent a stage for such a ‘committee’? Can it work via an ombudsperson? Do you need a formal whistle-blower policy?

All these topics can come together within this presentation topic and make it worthy of a discussion across board rooms. We believe that HR heads have another great topic here for making their voice heard!

13. Job Rotation and its contribution to Employee Growth

The industrial revolution showcased how employee productivity grew if people repeated a task often. It was stated that this reduced the chances of errors and in fact, is what led to the whole 6 sigma quality and productivity concept. Yet, is this concept relevant now?

As an HR head you can ponder on why this has worked but even how in this digital age, and reducing attention spans, employees are seeking to learn new skills.

Your presentation can cover how job rotation can lead to, for example. better talent development and retention. Worth your time!

Though the human resources function was once a strong advocate for employees, in the 1980s things changed. As labor markets became slack, HR shifted its focus to relentless cost cutting. Because it was hard for employees to quit, pay and every kind of benefit got squeezed. But now the pendulum has swung the other way. The U.S. unemployment rate has been below 4% for five years (except during the Covid shutdown), and the job market is likely to remain tight. So today the priorities are keeping positions filled and preventing employees from burning out. Toward that end HR needs to focus again on taking care of workers and persuade management to change outdated policies on compensation, training and development, layoffs, vacancies, outsourcing, and restructuring.

One way to do that is to show leaders what the true costs of current practices are, creating dashboards with metrics on turnover, absenteeism, reasons for quitting, illness rates, and engagement. It’s also critical to prevent employee stress, especially by addressing fears about AI and restructuring. And when firms do restructure, they should take a less-painful, decentralized approach. To increase organizational flexibility and employees’ opportunities, HR can establish internal labor markets, and to promote a sense of belonging and win employees’ loyalty, it should ramp up DEI efforts.

In this tight labor market, cost cutting is out. Championing employee concerns is in.

For decades, when U.S. labor markets were slack, HR focused on cost cutting, which meant squeezing employees’ pay, benefits, and training. But now that labor markets are tight, the challenge is to retain workers.

The New Priorities

HR must focus on keeping positions filled and preventing employees from burning out or becoming dissatisfied.

The HR function must educate leaders about the true costs of turnover, address employee anxiety about AI and restructuring, lobby for investments in training, rethink how contract workers and vendors are used, and strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

From World War II through 1980 the focus of the human resources function was advocating for workers—first as a way to keep unions out of companies and later to manage employees’ development in the era when all talent was grown from within. Then things changed. Driven by the stagflation of the 1970s, the recession of the early 1980s, and more recently the Great Recession, HR’s focus increasingly shifted to relentless cost cutting. Decades of slack labor markets made slashing HR expenses easy because it was hard for people to quit. Pay and every kind of benefit, including training and development, got squeezed. Work demands went up, and job security fell.

  • Peter Cappelli is the George W. Taylor Professor of Management at the Wharton School and the director of its Center for Human Resources. He is the author of several books, including Our Least Important Asset: Why the Relentless Focus on Finance and Accounting Is Bad for Business and Employees (Oxford University Press, 2023).
  • Ranya Nehmeh is an HR specialist working on topics related to people strategy, human capital, leadership development, and talent management and is the author of The Chameleon Leader: Connecting with Millennials (2019).

New Tools to Enhance the Employee Experience

The Office of Human Resources has launched three exciting new tools designed to enhance the employee experience at Carnegie Mellon:

  • The Scotty Chatbot  enables you to independently find answers to common HR questions and provides quick access to important information and resources on our HR webpages.

  • Workday Journeys uses an intuitive interface to provide customized, concierge-style experiences, guiding CMU employees through key milestones in their employment life cycle. We recently launched a journey for the student worker onboarding process , and one in the upcoming weeks for newly-hired staff and faculty in Pittsburgh. From there, we will develop additional Workday Journeys as needed to help employees navigate key processes, and we will collaborate with campus members as we do so.

These tools supports staff and faculty in navigating key employee life-cycle events and day-to-day HR-related tasks. We hope these tools provide the best customer experience possible and empower employees to successfully accomplish their HR tasks.

Human Resources will provide an improved employee onboarding experience for both employees and hiring managers beginning May 1. 

The second phase of the NEOED Online Hiring Center is underway and will replace the Notice of Appointment and Adobe Sign hiring paperwork processes. The change will improve the onboarding experiences for new employees affiliated with SIU Carbondale for the first time, returning employees and present employees who are taking another job on campus. It is designed to ensure new hires are ready on their first day. 

The new system will allow new hires to complete paperwork; get a feel for SIU Carbondale’s culture, mission and values, and better understand their job duties. 

The improvements are also valuable for managers and anyone who is involved in the hiring process. A live online training session for hiring managers will be at noon April 29. The session will be recorded and available on D2L. More information on the training session is available at neoed.siu.edu . 

This is for permanent employees and does not impact or change the hiring process for extra help, graduate assistant or student employees. 

There will also be offboarding functionality that will assign tasks to employees leaving the university and give supervisors the reassurance they need to successfully transition duties and manage the separation.

HR Modernization: Preview of myURHR’s Security Role Review Process

It’s imperative that everyone in the University community has the appropriate security access to perform essential job functions within myURHR when it is live this fall.

Over the coming weeks, HR Business Partners will reach out to department leaders and administrators with information on the process to carefully review security roles and confirm the appropriate individuals are assigned to each department role. This work will not only support extensive security configuration happening in Workday and UKG but also help to preserve the integrity and appropriate access required for each University department.

myURHR departmental role assignments that will need to be reviewed include Department Coordinator (currently referred to as PAFer), Faculty Coordinator, Grad Coordinator, Department Finance Approver, Effort Certification Partner, and Timekeeper which will be assigned at the department family level in Workday.

Security Role Review Process

Departmental role assignments will need to be confirmed prior to go-live. HR Business Partners will work with department leaders and administrators to review and confirm role assignments.

In some areas, particularly large departments, there might be multiple people assigned to a single role. For example, a department might have two individuals assigned as department coordinators and the workload may be shared or divided. Alternatively, a single person may also be assigned to multiple coordinator roles. For example, in some departments, the same person may handle initiation of HR transactions for staff and faculty, and therefore, will be assigned as both the Department Coordinator and Faculty Coordinator.

The University has used current PAFer access to populate initial role assignments for departments in myURHR. It is important for departments to confirm the new role assignments in myURHR, especially as PAFer roles may not have been reviewed for quite some time.
