This is the best French toast recipe. It's different because it uses flour. I have given it to some friends and they've all liked it better than the French toast they usually make!

Do most of your mornings feel a bit like a mad rush, especially on the weekdays? Wouldn’t it be nice to make a special occasion out of one of those rare relaxing mornings?

Of course, you don’t want to turn a calm morning into chaos by attempting some complicated and drawn-out breakfast plan. However, I have the perfect solution: a simple french toast bar that feels “gourmet” without all the fuss.

It might sound a little fancy but hang in there with me. I’m definitely not one for fussy or fancy. I promise you can do this!

Make an Easy “Gourmet” French Toast Bar

While visiting my parents a couple weeks ago with my boys, we decided to make a french toast bar to spice up the regular old morning breakfast. We made fancy-sounding french toast toppings like homemade apple cinnamon syrup and made-from-scratch orange pomegranate glaze. We decorated our challah french toast with powdered sugar. But have no fear, it was so easy that the boys helped in almost every step of the process.

If you’re a kitchen guru, you can probably do this in your sleep. But if you’re a little intimated by or new to the “fancy food” kitchen scene, let me walk you through the steps to ensure you that your culinary skills are up to ‘Gourmet French Toast Bar’ snuff.

Choose Toppings for Your French Toast Bar

Start by deciding which toppings you want to include on your french toast bar. Fresh fruits add color, lots of flavors, and look and taste lovely.  Be sure to include some of these in your collection of toppings.

For the bread, we used challah, a sweet, braided Jewish bread. In my opinion, challah is by far the best bread for french toast . They don’t sell it all grocery stores, so be sure to call ahead to your store’s bakery if you haven’t seen it on the shelves before. Cut the challah in thick slices (about a 1.5″ or so) to mimic the gourmet french toast at your favorite brunch spot or the local diner.

We chose the following toppings for our french toast bar. If you’d like some more ideas,  scan the menus of your favorite brunch spots to borrow some of their ideas for unique and seasonal topping combinations .

  • Powdered sugar ~ This always makes it prettier, and it’s super easy
  • Fresh fruit ~ Sliced strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries
  • Peanut butter and bananas ~ A classic combination
  • Strawberries and chocolate ~ We melted chocolate chips in the microwave, the same way I did for this Valentine’s Day sweet snack with my boys .
  • Orange and pomegranate glaze ~ I topped our orange pound cake with the same glaze , so you can find the recipe there.
  • Apple cinnamon glaze ~ I tried this for the first time and loved it. Head to the bottom of this post for recipe details.

You could also add whipped cream (store-bought or homemade). But I’m not a fan of whipped cream, so we passed on it.

Prepare Ingredients For French Toast Bar

Next, prepare all of your ingredients for your simple french toast bar. Gather whatever you will need for all the toppings, the drinks, and the serving dishes. Clean and chop any fruit. Set aside all the ingredients (powdered sugar, pomegranates, cubed apples, brown sugar, etc..) from your cabinets and fridge that will be used in any homemade syrups or sauces. Measure out ingredients, where it makes sense.

The French use the term ‘mise en place’ which basically means ‘putting in place.’ Professional chefs use this practice regularly, and it works really well for everyday home chefs like us too.

Prepare French Toast Bar Toppings

Ingredients prepped, it’s time to start making the few homemade components of the spread. If you want to follow our toppings menu, prepare the apple cinnamon syrup first. While that simmers, mix and simmer the orange pomegranate glaze as well. These two components take the longest (though only about 10 – 15 minutes) and can cool while making the french toast.

Next, whip up the french toast soak (recipe below) and cook the french toast. If you have a large crowd, you can keep the cooked pieces in the oven at about 250 degrees Farenheit to stay warm until everything is cooked and ready to serve.

We  use real maple syrup in a cup or mug with a spout and heat it up in the microwave for 15 – 20 seconds, which always looks much fancier than store-bought syrup in its original packaging.

Finally, plate the french toast and round up your hungry family and/or friends to each make their own version of brunch bliss. They’ll seriously be impressed with your fancy options, and even the pickiest eaters can create something they love at your simple french toast bar.

Oh… The Clean Up

Maple syrup. Raw eggs. Sticky glaze. Homemade fruit syrups. As easy as it was to prepare, I wasn’t excited about the cleanup process. Letting the kids get their hands dirty (literally) made for a bit of a sticky mess. It doesn’t help that I pretty much hate doing dishes.

Often times, I cook and M does the dishes. I clean so few dishes that M occasionally asks me sarcastically if I know how to clean the dishes. (For the record, I definitely do…)

This time, however, in town visiting my parents and M elsewhere visiting friends, I begrudgingly took on the dish cleaning task myself.

Much to my surprise, it ended up being not that bad. Maybe I need to give dish cleaning more of a fair shake?

We’ll Definitely Make Another French Toast Bar

This was my first crack at a full-blown french toast bar. We’ve made french toast many times but never ratcheted our game up a notch to include an array of seemingly gourmet toppings.

I think I impressed even myself. I also loved exploring new options. I had never tried apple-cinnamon syrup. I love peanut butter and banana but always stuck with classic maple syrup on my french toast. With pretty basic kitchen skills, we opened up a whole new possibility of fun breakfast options that even the kids can help create.

French Toast Bar For Brunch with Girlfriends

You could also use the idea to make a simple yet sophisticated brunch for some girlfriends. Much of it can be prepared in advance, allowing you to spend more time chatting and less time prepping while friends are around.

If you have some friends over, add a fun punch in a pretty bowl with some champagne glasses, cut up a little extra fruit to vary the size of your bowls (and feed some adult appetites), and finish off the spread with a couple of vases of flowers from the grocery store. Your friends will be mightily impressed while you know it came together with nothing more than a few basic steps of preparation.

Ingredients.

  • 1 apple, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp of cornstarch dissolved in 1/3 cup of water
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then allow to simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add apples and allow to simmer for another 5 - 7 minutes or until apples reach desired softness.
  • Allow to cool slightly and serve.

Classic French Toast

Transform any leftover, stale bread into a delicious and decadent French Toast! Easy French Toast recipe with step-by-step photos .

French Toast

This is the French Toast that dreams are made of. Thick, pillowy slices of bread soaked in eggs and milk, lightly scented with vanilla and cinnamon, generously sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, followed by a drizzle of warm maple syrup. Could breakfast get any better?

What is French Toast?

As the name suggests, French Toast originates from France where it is called “ Pain Perdu ” or “ lost bread “. The recipe came about as a way to use up leftover and stale bread, i.e. “lost” bread.

The bread is soaked in a mixture of milk and eggs (called a custard ), and then pan-fried in butter.

What started out as a economical way of using up stale bread has, over the years, become a fancy and slightly indulgent breakfast with the addition of maple syrup and exotic fruits.

What Type of Bread to Use for French Toast

In France, Pain Perdu is made from any leftover crusty bread . Ideally, the bread should be slightly stale so that it is dry enough to soak up the custard.

These days, you can make French Toast using almost any type of bread, including:

  • French baguette – cut thick slices on the diagonal;
  • Brioche – thickly slice a French Brioche Loaf or a Brioche Bread for a decadent French Toast;
  • Shokupan – this Japanese Milk Bread is my favourite for making French Toast (also shown in these photos);
  • Challah or Butterzopf – thickly slice these buttery, braided loaves;
  • Fruit Bread – for a lightly spiced and fruity French Toast;
  • White loaf bread – look for unsliced white loaf from your local bakery.

French Toast Recipe

A good French Toast recipe starts with good bread (see above). The rest are ingredients you are likely to already have in your fridge and pantry – milk and eggs.

When my son was really young, he used to love “eggy bread”, which was a very simple and plain French Toast without any spices. These days, he’s more likely to ask me to triple the cinnamon and nutmeg! So simply adjust the spices to suit your tastes.

If you have the time and patience, kids also love French Toast cut into shapes with large cookie cutters, such as stars or hearts. Make sure you use a large cutter to minimise waste.

Japanese French Toast

The inspiration for my French Toast recipe comes via Japan, or, more specifically, Tokyo. There, they make their French Toast using Shokupan , or Japanese Milk Bread , which makes for light and fluffy, almost souffle-like, French Toast.

Tokyo-Style French Toast is typically made with very thickly sliced white bread, at least 4 cm/1.5 inches in thickness, and soaked overnight for ultra tender results.

Although I am not usually organised enough to prepare my breakfast the night before, I do prefer to make my French Toast with Japanese Milk Bread. For this purpose, I like to bake the Shokupan in loaf pan with a lid so that the resulting loaf produces slices which are perfectly square in shape.

How to Make French Toast

Thickly slice a slightly stale loaf of bread into 2.5 cm / 1 inch slices (although you can also make French Toast with thinner slices of bread).

If the bread is still somewhat fresh (which you can tell if it is still moist to the touch), then leave the slices on a wire rack for a few hours or overnight to dry out.

When you are ready to cook, use a fork to prick the bread all over and on both sides.

Whisk the eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla in a large bowl or jug.

Strain the egg mixture through a fine sieve into a shallow bowl . The bowl should be big enough to comfortably fit one slice of bread.

Discard the contents of the sieve.

This step is to remove the tiny cords attached to the yolk so that the French Toast will have an unblemished look. But you can, by all means, skip this step.

Whisk the cinnamon and nutmeg into the custard. If you add the spices beforehand, they will be caught in the sieve.

Place a piece of bread into the custard to soak on both sides. This should take about 30 seconds per side , depending on how thick your bread is and how dry it is.

While the bread is soaking, heat a non-stick pan over medium heat with about 1 teaspoon of butter and 1 teaspoon of oil per French Toast.

Once the butter starts to foam, gently place the soaked bread into the pan.

Cook for 3-5 minutes on each side, or until lightly golden. The French Toast is generally ready and cooked through in the centre when you see that the centre has puffed up slightly.

Repeat with the remaining slices of bread. You might need to whisk the mixture between each slice of bread so that the spices remain nicely distributed.

Serve immediately with the toppings of your choice.

Tips for Making French Toast

  • Use slightly stale bread . The bread needs to be somewhat dry so that it can soak up the custard without going soggy. If the bread still feels fresh, slice the bread as per the recipe, and leave it aside for a few hours or overnight to dry out.
  • Use thickly sliced bread . Thick slices of bread will give nice and fluffy results.
  • Strain the custard. This step is to remove the tiny cords attached to the yolk so that your French Toast will look smooth and unblemished.
  • Constantly move and turn the bread. This will ensure that the French Toast colours evenly all over.
  • Use a mix of butter and oil to cook the French Toast. Butter gives a nice richness in cooking, but it also burns easily. So adding oil to the pan will help to stop the butter from burning.
  • Cook slowly and on medium heat. For thick and fluffy French Toast, you need to cook slowly and on medium heat so that the bread has a chance to cook all the way through to the centre without burning on the outside.

What to Serve with French Toast

Like pancakes and waffles, there are so many ways you can serve French Toast. My favourite serving suggestions for French Toast include:

  • generously sprinkle with cinnamon sugar
  • drizzle with warm maple syrup
  • dust with icing sugar (powdered sugar)
  • serve with fresh strawberries or other seasonal berries

  • 250 ml (1 cup) milk
  • 2 tablespoons caster sugar

  • 4 teaspoons vegetable oil

  • The French Toast is generally ready and cooked through once you see that the centre has puffed up slightly.
  • Repeat with the remaining slices of bread.
  • Serve immediately.

I couldn’t find Shokupan but my local bakery sells Challah. It was painful leaving this gorgeous loaf of bread to hang around and go stale but I’m so glad I did. I also cut very thick slices like yours and these were honestly one of the best French Toast I have ever tasted. I served with raspberries, icing sugar and warm maple syrup.

Delicious recipe! I found Shokupan at a Japanese grocer near us and bought it just to try your French Toast recipe. I will only be making French Toast with thick slices now!

I’ve tried this recipe with both thickly sliced brioche and Shokupan. The Shokupan is definitely nicer and has a better texture. But my kids loved the version with brioche, so win-win for everyone.

French Toast Bites

Whenever I have a leftover loaf of hearty French or Italian bread lying around, I always love to cut it up and do something creative with it. Sometimes I’ll make bread crumbs or croutons, or maybe garlic bread or panzanella, but on weekends there’s nothing better than French toast.

Thing is, I tend to think big, bready slices of traditional French toast are just too heavy for breakfast. That’s why I love this idea of cutting up bite-sized cubes of day-old bread, soaking them in egg, milk, cinnamon and vanilla, and bubbling ’em in a pan with a little butter. The smell is incredible and the taste is light, fluffy, moist and full of all the French toast goodness you know and love.

Whether you top these little bites with fresh fruit, whipped cream or maple syrup, I know you’ll just love them, and kids will too. Plus, they’re just as simple and quick to make as traditional French toast, even if you’re not a morning person!

French Toast Bites

Ingredients

  • 1/2 loaf day-old French or Italian bread, day-old French or Italian bread
  • 1/2 cup low-fat or fat-free milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  • Trim crusts off of bread and cut into 1-inch-thick cubes. In a bowl, beat eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. Add bread cubes and mix to saturate.
  • Lightly butter a 10- to 12-inch nonstick frying pan. Place pan over medium-high heat. Lift bread cubes from mixture, shaking off excess liquid. Add cubes to hot pan and cook (adjust heat if necessary), turning as needed, until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Keep warm.
  • Repeat to soak and cook remaining cubes. Discard any remaining egg mixture.
  • If desired, top with maple syrup, whipped cream, powdered sugar or fruit of your choice.

This is my all-time favorite recipe for a perfectly sweet and rich french toast. A classic recipe that is so easy to make, it doesn’t just have to be for lazy weekends! Add your favorite toppings and dig into an indulgent breakfast.

French toast has become a popular brunch item in restaurants around my neighborhood. There’s nothing more satisfying than a perfectly golden, thick, caramelized piece of French toast on a lazy weekend. Except, perhaps, having it in bed while still wearing your pajamas!

It’s a mission of mine to turn any restaurant treat into an accessible, at-home recipe and this French toast recipe is no exception. It’s easy to make, takes only minutes, and the best part is that it works even better with day-old bread.

In my opinion, the best French toast should be a bit indulgent, so for this recipe I’ve added a caramelized sugar crust that makes the outside of the bread perfectly crunchy and sweet. It’s great with or without this extra sugary step, giving you options to achieve your own preferred sweetness.

What ingredients to use for French toast

The secret to the perfect toast comes down to the French toast ingredients. You want a bread that will soak up the batter, but also want a batter rich enough that it lends a creaminess to the final toast. Using the right ingredients, and the correct amount, is critical in any great recipe.

  • Bread – A simple white bread is the best to use, something that is great for toast. An enriched bread, like challah or brioche, are both great options too. Using day-old bread and cutting the slices thick makes a huge difference in getting the right proportion of batter to bread.
  • Sugar – I like things sweet, so I add sugar to the batter and the caramelized crust. If you want it less sweet, reduce the sugar or remove it from the batter.
  • Heavy cream and whole milk – French toast should be rich and decadent, so use higher fat dairy products to get that perfect creamy texture. I like to combine heavy cream and whole milk to get a nice balance.

How to make French toast

Start by slicing your bread. Using day-old bread is best, but it’s ok if it is still fresh. Just make sure to slice it thick (¾ inch or 2 cm) so it doesn’t fall apart when soaking in the batter.

Next, whisk together your batter. This is the eggs, sugar, heavy cream, milk, and vanilla. Pour it into a shallow bowl that’s big enough to dip a piece of bread in if your mixing bowl isn’t large enough.

Soak each slice of bread in the batter for 20-30 seconds on each side. I like to do this right before cooking, so the bread doesn’t get too soggy.

French Toast

While dipping your bread, melt some of the butter in a skillet pan over medium-low heat and sprinkle on some sugar, if using. The sugar will turn into caramel quickly, so as soon as the sugar is added place however many slices of bread that will fit without overlapping into the pan.

Cook the bread until golden brown, 1-3 minutes on each side before flipping carefully (note that the first side usually takes longer). Clean the pan carefully (it’s hot!) with a paper towel to prevent any excess sugar from burning and repeat the process with the remaining slices. The process is soak bread, melt butter, sprinkle sugar, and cook.

Serve the French toast immediately with your favorite toppings. Some of my family’s favorites include butter, maple syrup, jam, sour cream, powdered sugar, and fruit.

French Toast with Berries

Ingredients

  • 6 slices of preferably day-old white bread/challah/brioche that are sliced ¾ inch (2cm) thick
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons (37g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • ½ cup (120 ml) whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) unsalted butter, for frying
  • 2 tablespoons sugar , for frying, optional

Instructions

In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar, heavy cream, milk, and vanilla until combined. Pour into a shallow bowl that's big enough to dip a piece of bread into.

Soak the bread slices in the mixture for 20-30 seconds on each side (if it gets too mushy and break, soak it for only a few seconds). Meanwhile, over medium-low heat, melt some of the butter in a skillet pan (swirl it around so it coats the pan bottom evenly) and sprinkle some of the sugar, if using. The sugar will turn into caramel so work quickly so it won’t burn.

As soon as the sugar is added, place however many slices of bread that fit into the pan. Cook until golden brown, 1-3 minutes on each side (the first side usually takes longer). Clean the pan carefully (it’s hot!) with a kitchen paper towel so there’s no sugar left, and repeat the process; melt butter, sprinkle sugar, if using, and cook the bread slices.

  • Serve immediately with your favorite toppings: butter, maple syrup, jam, sour cream, powdered sugar, fruit.

My perfect French toast is lightly crispy on the outside,

custardy like a bread pudding on the inside,

and a little bit of sweetness.

The worst kind of French toast,

dry, flat, or squishy and soggy.

No flavor at all.

Let's get this going.

The secret to the best French toast

is choosing the right bread.

I like the challah. Challah bread, baby.

It's got the right density, great flavor,

and I like to slice my own.

I like to go two fingers.

I don't really use the butt end that much,

although my wife will eat this.

I'll give that to her.

I like the thickness because I want it to be substantial.

I don't want a wimpy piece of French toast.

Not only that, the thickness allows for maximum amount

of absorption of the liquid that we're gonna put this in,

and I want it to soak in really well.

I want it to be like a bread pudding,

plus it looks really good on the plate.

Look at it.

She's gorgeous.

What I like about challah is got a really tight crumb.

Bread that has like a very loose crumb,

like lots of big bubbles,

doesn't really work all that great for this

because that tight crumb is what soaks up the liquid.

If you can't find holo bread, find a nice sturdy white loaf.

Something that is baked at the local bakery,

not something you get on the shelf at the supermarket.

I'm gonna slice these and put them on a tray

because I want our bread to dry out a little.

Pain perdu.

The French term for French toast means lost bread.

It's daily bread that's a little stale.

Not only does it soak up more liquid,

which means more flavor in our French toast,

I feel like it also gives us a little better texture,

So, that when we finally cook it, it's not gonna fall apart.

If you don't have the time to let this dry out overnight,

put it in a low oven, 200 degrees, 250,

and just do a really light toast on it

for about 15, 20 minutes.

So, I'm gonna put this aside.

And while we wait for it to dry out,

I'm gonna make my batter.

Your batter is your chance to add as much flavor

as possible to your French toast.

One of the biggest mistakes I see with French toast is

that people do not set it up like a custard.

At the end of the day, this is a custard.

It's got eggs and cream or eggs and dairy in it.

First thing I wanna do for my custard

is I have a little bit of nutmeg.

I'm gonna put that in the bowl.

Nutmeg and custards is just wonderful.

Orange zest, this is one of those things

that is a very Frank thing, right?

I love orange zest in my food.

And then you pair orange zest with nutmeg and brandy

and you are in heaven.

We're gonna put a pinch of salt.

Salt is a flavor enhancer.

You always want to use a little bit of salt with your sweet.

It accentuates all the flavors.

We're gonna add cream.

If you're worried about cream, use half and half.

Use whole milk.

Once you start getting into the 1%, 2% milk, even skim milk,

it's like, don't bother.

Now, you're just gonna have wet bread.

The basic ratio for a custard

is two cups of cream, four eggs.

With that ratio, your custard will set up

and not be watery at the end of cooking.

So, I have my cream, my nutmeg, my orange zest.

I'm going to add sugar.

You need sweet here.

Brandy. Is it a little over the top?

Yeah, it's a little over the top.

But hey, that's me, a little over the top.

I think it compliments all the flavors in here really well.

If you don't have it, don't bother.

Some vanilla extract.

Last but not least, we're gonna put our eggs in.

Eggs are the cement that holds everything together.

And for us, the eggs are gonna hold our custard together.

You could use a whisk for this.

My only problem with the whisk is that

when you have dry spices like nutmeg,

it doesn't blend all that well

and the nutmeg tends to clump up.

And then you'll have a bite of French toast

that has a lot of nutmeg, and a bite that doesn't have any.

So, the immersion blender here works really well

at combining this.

Everything's incorporated really well.

We're ready for the bread.

So, here's our dried out bread.

Don't just go in there

and plop it in, plop it in, and then fry it.

You need a good 20 to 30-minute soak.

I'm only gonna put about three slices in here.

I don't wanna overcrowd this

because if they kind of rest on top each other,

they don't really soak up as much of the liquid.

Move it around.

Make sure that we get all sides coated.

If you don't let it soak long enough,

the middle is going to be dry.

So, right now, if I squeeze it,

it's still firm in the center.

That tells me that the custard

is not fully incorporated into the bread.

The French toast has been soaking for about 20 minutes.

Let's get the piece out here.

You can see that it's actually really soft, right?

You push your finger in, it's super soft.

Squeeze in.

If the liquid comes out like a sponge,

you're ready to go.

And with that, it is time to cook.

When you're cooking this French toast,

you want to go low and slow.

If you have high heat,

it's gonna be dark brown on the outside

and soggy in the center.

Take your time. Be patient.

I'm gonna turn my pan onto about a medium heat,

and then I'm gonna put copious amounts

of butter in here, right?

I am not shy about the butter

because I want my outside to get a little crispy.

I like salted butter.

I think the saltiness really accents the sweetness

in the French toast.

Now, I know my temperature is good

'cause my butter did not start to sizzle

when I put it in the pan.

I want the butter to melt slowly

and coat the bottom of the pan.

Our butter is melted.

It is not starting to sizzle yet.

But actually, you can see a little bit of sizzling there

and that's good.

What I'm gonna do with this

is I'm gonna drain it just a little,

and then we can lay them in our pan.

We don't wanna squeeze it out.

We just wanna get some of that surface moisture off.

Lay it in the pan.

If you see that it's bubbling really rapidly

around the French toast, lower your heat.

We want light little bubbles. Light bubbles, and we're okay.

You just want to make sure

that that center is nice and cooked.

French toast has been cooking for about four minutes

So, we're starting to get nice and golden brown.

So, it's time to turn.

So, let's turn these babies.

We got it nice and brown.

This is our presentation side.

It's beautiful.

Now, we just let it go for about another five

to seven minutes on low heat,

and that center cud will get nice and set and delicious.

If you have little pieces of batter on here,

you can always just peel them off.

Just get rid of 'em.

You can see there's lots of butter here.

I like to swirl things in my pan,

so they soak up some of that butter.

The French toast is done, and this is how I test it, right?

We have a lot of that custard in the middle.

If I can push down in the center

and I start seeing liquid squeeze out,

it is not cooked enough.

You have to let it go a little longer.

We're beautifully brown.

It smells good.

See how nice and soft and fluffy it is, but not soggy?

Am I the only one that wants to eat this

like right outta the pan?

When it comes to French toast, lots of syrup,

lots of butter, lots of love.

So, I always start out, and again, I use whipped butter.

I just think the salted whipped butter

is something that's just extra special.

Nestle that down.

Another knob of butter.

So, let's do this.

Little butter on top.

And then we have real maple syrup.

And my opinion, this is the only way to go.

And as if this wasn't sweet enough,

just a little bit of powdered sugar on top.

Make it extra special.

First person that tells me they wouldn't eat that,

I'm done with you.

And this is the best way to make French toast at home.

Let's give it a taste.

I'm gonna cut into this piece here.

Look soft and custard in the middle.

Slather a little butter on it.

Get a little syrup.

You taste a little bit of brandy.

You taste a little bit of orange.

It's just like you get these little pops

of flavor as you eat it.

Everything kind of like goes so well together.

Ingredient Notes

  • Bread:  Use either whole grain or sub in your favorite bread. Stale bread will give you the best texture!
  • Eggs:  These give you that classic French toast crust and keep the bread from becoming too soft.
  • Milk:  Choose your favorite dairy or non-dairy milk to saturate the slices of bread.
  • Cinnamon:  Cinnamon adds a cozy scent and flavor that’s extra delicious.
  • Vanilla extract:  Add a little vanilla or almond extract to make this Valentine French toast recipe smell amazing.
  • Heart shaped cookie cutter:  This isn’t an ingredient, but you’ll need this to make this heart French toast!

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: prepare heart french toast.

  • Lay the bread on a flat surface and cut a large heart out of the center of each piece with a cookie cutter .
  • In a wide, shallow dish, whisk together the eggs with the milk, cinnamon, vanilla and salt until combined. 
  • Dip each bread heart into the egg mixture and allow it to absorb for a minute, using a fork to gently prick each slice. Flip the hearts and repeat with the remaining side. 
  • Lightly grease a large griddle or skillet with butter or cooking spray and heat over medium low heat, 350 degrees F if using a griddle. Add the bread hearts to the pan or griddle and cook for 3-4 minutes or until the bread develops a golden, brown crust. Flip and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the opposite side is golden brown. If it’s browning too quickly on the outside, turn the heat down and continue cooking until cooked through.

Step 2: Soak and Cook Remaining Bread Slices

  • Soak the remaining bread slices that you removed the heart from in the egg mixture until coated. Cook on each side until golden brown. 

Step 3: Serve and Enjoy!

Recipe Tips:

  • If the egg mixture starts to drift from the bread when you place it in the pan to cook, just push it back into the edge of the bread with a spatula to maintain the shape of the heart.
  • Use two hands to hold the soaked bread with the cutout when transferring to the pan to prevent it from breaking since it will be delicate after absorbing the egg mixture.
  • For a nice presentation, I like to serve this French toast with mixed berries inside the heart cut out, with the heart slice of French toast on the side. You can also just serve the French toast hearts if desired. 
  • If preferred, you can soak the whole piece of bread in the egg mixture, cook it and then use the cookie cutter to cut out the heart after it’s cooked.
  • For this recipe, we used whole grain Texas toast, since it’s thicker and sturdier than regular sandwich bread.
  • Don’t soak the bread for too long or it may turn out soggy. Instead, soak it for about 30 seconds on each side.
  • Old bread is best for French toast! Although it may seem a little dried out, it will soften back up in the milk mixture and have the perfect texture without becoming too soft.

Recipe FAQs

I recommend using slightly stale whole grain bread because it contains extra fiber and typically less sugar. This means it will stick with you longer without giving you as much of a blood sugar spike. Technically, you can use any sliced bread. Sourdough, French bread, Texas toast, challah, and regular white bread will all work!

You definitely can make French toast ahead of time if you need to! Freshly cooked French toast has a slightly different texture, and it can be a little softer after reheating. For best results, reheat it in a large skillet or griddle to make it taste fresh.

French toast is known for being a decadent breakfast option, not necessarily a healthy one, and for good reason. It’s usually made with white bread, which doesn’t have much fiber to keep you full, and we tend to slather it with lots of syrup and other sweet toppings. It tends to be high in carbohydrates, fat, and sugar without nearly enough protein or fiber. However, not every recipe has to be that way! You can easily make a few simple switches to make your French toast more nutritious. For example, use a high fiber whole grain bread and serve it with lots of fresh berries with just a little bit of maple syrup. To make it healthier, skip the extra butter on top and avoid the powdered sugar. Of course, everything is good in moderation! It’s okay to enjoy it just the way you like it every once in a while.

Storage Guidelines

Allow any leftover French toast to cool to room temperature for up to 2 hours, then store it in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. To reheat, either microwave it for 1-2 minutes or rewarm it in a hot pan for 2-3 minutes.

Why is my French toast soggy? 

The key to making great French toast is making it not too soggy and not too dry. There's nothing worse than French toast that’s undercooked on the inside, and burned on the outside. To avoid these mistakes, try to remember three simple French toast rules:

  • The best French toast starts with good quality bread.  If the bread is too soft or too thin, it won’t hold up to the thick custard. This usually means avoiding generic sliced sandwich bread. We prefer a thicker slice of good quality bread instead. If all you have is sandwich bread, don’t worry! You can still make a delicious French toast in the form of Crunchy French Toast.
  • It’s all about the custard.  The basis for a creamy custard is eggs and milk. We prefer using half-and-half for its richness, but whole milk or even cream will work well. The custard needs to be completely whisked together. Add a touch of vanilla, some sugar for sweetness, and a bit of cinnamon for flavor, then soak the bread. To avoid a soggy mess, don’t let the bread sit in the custard for too long (this isn’t a bath)—it should be dipped in to soak up just enough liquid on each side.
  • Control the heat.  This is important to avoid overcooking or burning your French toast. Start by pre-heating a non-stick skillet over low heat, then add the butter, and after you add your toast, hover between low and medium-low, depending on how hot your stove gets. It cooks up quickly, so be sure to keep an eye on it. 

What's the best bread for making French toast? 

While any bread will work in this recipe, it’s also important to remember that bread is the central ingredient, so it should be a good quality, tasty bread. Picking a loaf of bread rather than a pre-sliced bread gives you the ability to make thicker slices or even cubes (if you’re making a French toast casserole). Here are our recommendations for bread:

- Brioche or Challah: Buttery and creamy.

- French bread: Hardy and chewy. Make sure to let this bread soak up the custard a little longer.

- Texas Toast: Thick, country style bread with fluffy texture.

- Cinnamon bread: Try this bread for some extra flavor.

- Croissants: Light, airy, and slightly crisp.

Can you make French toast in advance? 

Sometimes cooking French toast on the spot can be a daunting task, especially when you have a million other things going on. We get it—mornings can get busy! To make French toast even easier, you can prepare everything in advance. Make the full recipe, then arrange the cooked French toast slices in a single layer on a baking sheet and place in the oven at 250˚F for up to 30 minutes to keep them warm. To freeze, place the baking sheet in the freezer until firm, then transfer to a sealed container for up to 3 months.

  • Step  2 Heat a large nonstick skillet over low heat, then melt a small amount of butter. Add as many pieces as will fit, cut side down, then increase the heat very slightly (don't go above medium-low).
  • Step  3 Allow the toast to cook on the first side for 3 to 4 minutes. Move it around in the skillet a bit to make sure it doesn't burn. When it's deep golden brown on the surface, flip it to the other side and let it cook for another 2 minutes or so.
  • Step  4 Remove from the pan and cook the rest of the bread slices.
  • Step  5 Serve with butter, warm syrup, strawberries, and whipped cream. Absolute heaven!

How to Make Perfect French Toast While Camping

French toast is a great camping breakfast, but there’s a surprising number of ways for it go wrong. Too many times, we’ve made French toast that turned out too mushy, too eggy, or too rubbery. For Pete’s sake, it’s French toast! How hard can it be!?

So we took some time to break down the basics and figure out where we could perfect our technique. We discovered there were a couple of critical steps we had been just sort of winging this whole time. After a couple of tests, we’ve outlined what we’ve learned so you can make killer French toast right out of the gates.

The Best Bread for French Toast

The single best way to achieve exceptional French toast at a campsite (or anywhere for that matter) is to use whole loaf bread and slice it yourself. Pre-sliced sandwich bread is just too thin, cook through too quickly, and often results in rubbery French toast.

We recommend picking up a loaf of your favorite bread and cutting it into generous 3/4″-1” thick slices. You will be able to soak up more of the egg-milk mixture, giving you more time to crisp the outsides without overcooking the insides.

If you like your French toast to have a rich, custard-like center, then use a fresh loaf of bread. If you prefer firmer centers, then a day or two old loaves of bread will be best.

Most styles of bread will work, but we often go with sourdough. It is easy to find a whole loaf at most grocery stores and it adds a distinct tangy flavor that pairs nicely with the overall sweetness of the dish. Rustic French loaf, a baguette, or even a pumpernickel will all work as well (although the visual presentation will look different).

Eggs to Milk Ratio

Previously, we’ve played fast and loose with this ratio. It really depended on how many eggs we had on hand. Sometimes one, sometimes four. This gave us wildly inconsistent results.

But after a few kitchen tests, we’ve concluded that 3 eggs to 1 cup of milk is the ideal ratio. Anything less and the mixture is too thin. Anything more and you’re making a Croque Monsieur.

For fresh bread, we found that a 10-second dip on both sides soaked up just the right amount of egg mixture. You want it to be moist throughout, but not totally saturated.

For stale bread, soak the bread slices for up to 20-30 seconds.

Adding vanilla extract, cinnamon, and even a little nutmeg are all good ideas for French Toast, but one critical step we had been leaving out was to add sugar to the mixture.

Not only does the egg-milk-sugar mixture soak into the bread and sweeten it from within, but it produces a crispy caramelized layer on the outside.

In fact, if you sprinkle a little extra sugar on the outside of your bread after you dip it into the mixture, you can get a spectacular golden brown finish on your toast.

Cooking Method

Using a well-seasoned cast-iron or nonstick pan, you’ll want to cook your French toast over medium heat. Most camp stoves have relatively small burners and we found we were getting a hot spot right in the middle. This resulted in unevenly cooked bread, particularly if we were trying to cook two slices at once. The solution: more butter.

By cooking with more butter in the pan, the heat is more evenly distributed across the surface of the pan. We start with 4 tablespoons of butter and warm it up until just starting to froth. It might seem like a lot at first, but after toasting about eight slices of bread you may want to replenish.

Ingredients

  • ½ lb loaf bread
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar , plus more for sprinkling
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract , optional
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg , optional
  • 4 tablespoons butter for pan
  • Maple syrup & berries to top

Instructions

  • Cut the bread into 3/4" - 1” thick slices.
  • Beat the eggs first in a bowl large enough to accommodate a slice of the bread. Then add milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and sugar together, until thoroughly mixed.
  • Heat 4 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Dip a slice of bread in the egg and milk mixture and let it soak for about 10 seconds on each side. Let the excess drip off, sprinkle each side with additional sugar, and then fry it in the skillet until golden and crispy on each side, about 3 minutes per side.
  • Repeat with the rest of the bread, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
  • Serve with maple syrup, fresh fruit, and a cup of hot coffee. Enjoy!

Those appear to be modern camping plates, not nice plates. Also, cutting boards are very common with camping these days.

This recipe seems very helpful. I’m going to have to give it a test run, and might use it for a large group event. Thanks for working out the details.

Three years late to the conversation but I wanted to share. I started experimenting with cooking nice meals while camping back in the early 1980s before it became known as glamping. I had different-sized cutting boards, metal plates like those in the pictures above, not to mention Victorinox knives and Dansk silverware, a Dutch oven, high-quality camping pots and pans, and a cast-iron skillet. Also accompanying us was a broad range of spices and herbs, and of course, the food! Cooking took place at base camp, and if we were going to head out on a trek, the basics were fixed up at base camp, packed in a small bag along with the spices, backpacking stoves and utensils necessary, and assembled wherever we stayed the night. Someone would be assigned to carry the kitchen/food supplies, and their necessities were divided among the rest of us to carry. So much fun!

If you make it as a casserole in a Dutch oven, everyone gets hot French toast at the same time. Cooking two pieces at a time with no way to keep cooked pieces hot is not a recipe for success, though campers will be happy with even cold French toast. But no reason to do that. Dutch oven is far less work. No standing and flipping, etc.

The whole purpose of camping is to be together. So why do so many recipes on this website create meals that are only hot for one or two people, and the cook has to cook and cook and cook one or two people’s breakfasts, and then the next and then the next. That’s not camping.

Adapt these recipes for Dutch oven cooking so everyone can eat TOGETHER and so the cook isn’t relegated to short-order cook duty.

Sorry for the rant. I like the recipes but many make no sense if the group is larger than 2.
