How to Tie a Swiss Seat

license

Introduction: How to Tie a Swiss Seat

How to Tie a Swiss Seat

Why spend money on expensive harnesses and other gear when all you need to securely rappel is some rope? I will show you how you can turn approximately 10 ft. of rope into a comfortable, safe, and easy-to-tie harness. This harness is referred to most commonly as a Swiss Seat and will only take 5 minutes to tie. The tying is fairly straight forward and can be completed by beginners who have never even tied a knot before! While this seat is fairly simple, I recommend practicing a couple times to build confidence before actually rappelling with it. While other variations of tying this seat exist, this variation is taught by the Army and Marine Corps and is the most basic method.

Materials Needed

  • Approximately 10-12 ft. of rope depending on your size. The rope should typically be natural fiber rope, or a static line rope, not damaged in any way, and rated to support more than your body weight.
  • A carabiner rated for supporting your weight, with a lockable gate.
  • Leather gloves if going rappelling.

WARNING: Always wear gloves while rappelling due to heat and friction created by the rope.

Step 1: Fold the Rope in Half

Fold the Rope in Half

Take the rope and fold it so that both ends are together at one end. Grab the other end, hold it in your non-dominant hand, and place that fist at your same-sided hip. While keeping the center of the rope at your hip, bring the ends around your waist and hold them in front of you such that there is a longer and shorter side.

Step 2: Tie the Rope Twice Over Itself

Tie the Rope Twice Over Itself

Take the rope in your right hand and fold it over the rope in your left hand as if you're tying a shoe. Repeat this once more. Pull the ends so the rope is snug against your waist but not too tight. Let the ends of the rope hang in front of you on the ground.

Step 3: Reach Between Your Legs and Pull the Rope Up Behind You

Reach Between Your Legs and Pull the Rope Up Behind You

Reach behind your legs and pull the ropes up between your legs so that the ropes are very tight and are bisecting the middle of each back pocket. Take each rope and feed them down between your waist and the rope around your waist so that the ropes are up and over the rope on your waist.

Ensure the portion being fed down is closer to the center of your back. Men - make sure to have 'all of your eggs in one basket'

Step 4: Squat and Pull the Ropes Down Tight

Squat and Pull the Ropes Down Tight

Squat down three times and pull the ropes out and away from you. The tighter the rope is now, the more comfortable it will be once you begin rappelling. Then bring the ends of the rope back around your waist and hold them at the same hip you began tying the seat on.

Step 5: Tie a Square Knot at Your Hip

Tie a Square Knot at Your Hip

Square Knot - A type of double knot that is made symmetrically, is easy to untie, and holds securely.

Take the rope in your right hand and place it over the left as if tying a shoe. Then take the rope in your left hand (which was previously in your right hand) and place it over the right as if tying a shoe. Tighten this knot snug to your hip.

Step 6: Tie Half Hitches on Both Sides of the Square Knot

Tie Half Hitches on Both Sides of the Square Knot

Half Hitch - a knot formed by passing the end of a rope around its standing part and then through the loop, often used in pairs.

Feed the rope on the right sky to ground through the portion of rope used to tie the square knot. Then feed it back down through the hole created. Feed the rope on the left ground to sky through the portion of rope used to tie the square knot. Then feed it up through the hole created.

Step 7: Tuck Remaining Rope Into Your Pocket, Feed Carabiner Through Front Ropes

Tuck Remaining Rope Into Your Pocket, Feed Carabiner Through Front Ropes

Tuck the loose rope into your pocket. Feed the carabiner through both ropes across the front of your waist as if you are sliding a fish hook down your chest. Spin the carabiner around such that the larger end is away from your body and the latch is on top. Spin the lock until the red markings disappear, it is tight, and it cannot be opened. Have fun rappelling!

Swiss to Charge Extra for Seat Assignments... In Business Class

Julian Mark Kheel

Airlines are working hard to expand upon the infinite number of ways they can charge customers more after they've already bought their ticket, and carriers around the world have quickly hopped on the "seat assignment fee" bandwagon in which passengers have the privilege of paying extra to pick a good seat ahead of time . But those who pay a premium to sit in business or first class naturally expect to be immune to these seat fees, given the much higher airfare they're already paying.

Well, one airline doesn't seem to think that should be the case. Swiss Air just sent the following email to its top-tier Senator and HON Circle Miles & More members, who are already the only ones with access to Swiss first class seats on award tickets...

"As a loyal and valued customer, we would like to inform you in advance about the following changes in SWISS Business.
With the remodeling of SWISS Business on long-haul routes, we have introduced exclusive single seats that are marked by more space and discretion. Due to the overwhelming demand concerning these "Privacy seats", we will be giving our guests the opportunity to reserve these seats for a fee starting at the end of March.
As a token of our appreciation, we are delighted to continue offering these seats to you at no charge, as long as they are still available at the time of booking."

Let's unpack this email, shall we? Swiss business class is configured in a staggered format in which every other row along the windows has one seat — sometimes called a "throne" seat — while the remaining rows have two seats. It's similar to the arrangement JetBlue uses in its Mint cabin and looks like this...

swiss seat assignment

People traveling alone often like the solo seat as it provides more privacy, while couples will take the pair of seats together. However, for a while now, Swiss has been blocking off most of the throne seats in its seat map so they couldn't be selected in advance by anyone other than top-tier members.

But now, Swiss has clearly decided to turn this into a money-making opportunity instead. In its email, the airline is informing its best customers that they will continue to get early access to these throne seats for free, but everyone else will be expected to pay extra to get them ahead of time, though they don't specify what the upcharge will be.

TPG Editor-in-Chief Zach Honig reviewed Swiss Business Class on its 777-300ER last August and noted that while he really enjoyed his flight, he wouldn't go out of his way just to fly the product again. He also highly recommended avoiding the paired seats near the windows , even if you're traveling with someone, because of the configuration and lack of aisle access from the window seat. Based on Zach's tour of the 777-300ER, the throne seats are clearly the best ones in the cabin.

But unfortunately if you want to guarantee one of those ahead of time, it'll soon cost even more than you already paid just to be in business in the first place.

I booked the more expensive Standard Coach Economy seats which include free checked luggage along with being able to pick free seat assignments vs the cheaper the Basic Economy which doesn't include either.

When I log into Swiss Airlines website with our conformation number to choose our seats, it's lists a separate fee for picking them ahead of time along with the regular policy of the seats being assigned 24 hours prior to the flight .

Am I missing something here? If United says my more expensive coach seats include these perks shouldn't the partner airline offer them then? My return trip (out of Italy) is on Lufthansa so I assume I'll have the same issue with them.

Thanks for any comments.

I have the same situation. Booked through UA website and paid more to be able to pick your seats. It turned out we can only select seats from UA, not Swiss air. Swiss air charges $40 per seat min. We are not sure if we should pay to get our seats now or wait until our seats are assigned at the time of boarding with Swiss. I feel like being ripped off as UA website is clearly stated that we can pick our seats if we pay $150 more per ticket.

"With Economy: Complimentary seat assignments are only offered when available on United and United Express® flights . There may be a charge for Economy seat assignments on our partner airlines ."

You were not "ripped off" you just didn't read.

How did you ever manage to get your money back from Swiss? I have a similar situation bit I'm 6 months and still waiting. Finally disputed with my credit card.

You know Swiss has a site in English,

I couldn't seem to flip to it, so I just went with my rudimentary German, and it worked. Good enough for me.

Further information and details about advance seat reservations

What are the conditions for reserving a seat.

  • The flight must be operated by Lufthansa Group airlines, Lufthansa Regional (Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa CityLine), Lufthansa Express Rail (DB), Edelweiss or Discover Airlines.
  • Your flight booking is confirmed (not waiting list bookings).
  • If you did not select your seat during the booking process, you can also do so after completing your booking and up to 30 hours before departure. Access your trip under My bookings, and book or change 1 your seat there.

Of course you can still select any of the available seats as soon as your flight check-in opens (generally up to 23 hours before departure). Depending on the fare, this is free of charge. Please note that in this case, the selection may be limited. If you are travelling on a European route on the Economy Light fare, you will be automatically allocated a seat at check-in. A change fee starting from EUR 29 2 will be charged if you would like to change this seat.

Please note that a confirmed advance seat reservation does not guarantee you a specific seat on board the aircraft (e.g. seat 3A). It only refers to the category selected (e.g. Classic Seat, Preferred Zone Seat, Extra Legroom Seat etc.). An advance seat reservation applies to a single leg of your flight.

1 Changes are only possible if the seat is available at the same or a lower price. Fees already paid are not refundable.

  • You are not travelling with an animal in the aircraft cabin.
  • Lufthansa may allocate another seat to passengers who do not meet these preconditions to ensure safety on board.
  • Any carry-on baggage must be stowed in the overhead bins, as items must not be placed in the seating area or under the seats during take-off and landing.

Those accompanying HON Circle Members and Senators

HON Circle Members and Senators have the option to reserve a chosen seat free of charge for themselves and all passengers travelling under the same booking number on flights with Lufthansa, Lufthansa Regional (Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa CityLine), Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines and SWISS. This benefit is subject to availability and does not apply to Economy Light fare bookings on short-haul flights.

Seating changes required for operational reasons

If we have to change the seat you reserved (e.g. for operational reasons), we will endeavour to reserve an equivalent new seat for you. Priority is given to passengers who are travelling together, e.g. families sitting next to one another. Then seats with more legroom, aisle, window and then middle seats will then be allocated in that order.

If we cannot allocate a seat in the same category (e.g. by the aisle, window or a seat with more legroom), you can arrange a refund of the fee paid via the Lufthansa Service Centre.

Ticket rebookings and reimbursements

You can rebook or cancel your flight ticket with an existing advance seat reservation easily and conveniently yourself via My bookings.

If you have paid for an advance seat reservation on the flight you wish to change, we will automatically try to book you an equivalent seat on the new flight. Please note that this is only possible if your flight route and airline remain the same. If this is not the case, you cannot obtain a refund for any advance seat reservations already paid for (even if no comparable seats are available on the new flight).

The fee for an advance seat reservation that has already been paid for can be reimbursed in the following cases:

  • If we change a flight itinerary or aircraft type, for example, and there is no equivalent seat available on the new flight.
  • If you have to book a new flight because of a flight disruption and your chosen seat is not available.

Please note that advance seat reservations cannot be refunded either at the airport or on board.

Fees paid for advance seat reservations cannot be refunded in the following cases:

  • You cancel your trip.
  • You have received an upgrade from us as a goodwill gesture or for operational reasons.
  • You change your seat, but your new seat is cheaper or free of charge.
  • You make changes to your booking and purchase a seat in a lower or equivalent category. You can obtain a credit to rebook to a more expensive seat category.
  • You do not meet the requirements given above for a seat in an emergency exit row.
  • You make changes to your trip, but there are no equivalent seats available on your new flight, advance seat reservations on your new flight are free of charge or this flight is not operated by Lufthansa, Lufthansa Regional, Austrian Airlines, SWISS or Brussels Airlines.
  • You make changes to your trip thereby altering your route.

SAS Airlines - question on getting assigned seats

We were one of the lucky ones (ha) that United cancelled our flight to Newark - Stockholm in July for our RS Scandanavian tour. So, last week I spent over 2 hours waiting/talking to United to get new flights. Then I noticed she messed up our last leg flight, so another call the next day.

Tulsa to Chicago (united); chicago to zurich (united) ; Zurich to Stockholm (was told it was swiss air) no assigned seats

So I just got off with swiss air but it is actually with SAS and no assigned seats.

Already paid United for extra leg room (we are tall and need extra leg room) but now no seat assignment with SA.

So, my main question/concern is ..... from your experience with SAS do they charge a seat assignment fee ahead of time or will we be fine just to wait til we check in at Tulsa airport when we leave for Europe and not bother about paying for our seat ahead of time .

Thanks, Kim

It's a pity you weren't rebooked on SAS across the ocean, they have direct flights both Newark-Stockholm and Chicago-Stockholm. But regarding seats, when flying SAS you can select your seat for free in advance if flying business or premium economy. When you fly economy you can choose your seat for free when checking in, or pay to select a seat in advance. But I honestly don't know how it works on code share flights.

I think joe32F has misunderstood it a bit. The two airlines with direct flights between Zürich and Stockholm are SAS and Swiss. Air Baltic does not fly between Stockholm and Zürich. However, it is not uncommon in the industry for airlines to lease aircraft from each other. And SAS has leased a few aircraft from Air Baltic, so a SAS flight might be "operated by Air Baltic", but still be a SAS flight.

Thanks badger I new you would probably know. We did pay for the premium plus seating on United. In a perfect world, I think we should get the seating free of charge. I hate calling SAS and wasting over an hour. It is only a 2.5 ish flight. We will make do. If we don’t sit together it won’t be the end of the world. Just hate my gut fear of being bumped off. 🙂 for overbooking. Gotta get there for our RS tour. Been wanting to do this tour since 2016.

I don't think there is a risk of being bumped off. But if you have a premium economy ticket you should be able to select your seat online, no need to wait in line for a customer service agent to be free. Code shares are always a bit tricky, but if you log in with the flight number and booking number you should be able to choose your seat, either at United's website or at SAS' site.

For SAS operated flights booked through UA, I have had to wait until the 24 hour window to get seat assignents. This situation includes flights with UA code share flight numbers by opearated by SAS. Calling SAS does not help.

I have a frequent-flyer ticket obtained through United. It's a United flight to Brussels and then an SAS flight to Oslo. The SAS website said I could reserve a seat for 15 euros (I assume it would be more for a transatlantic flight), so I tried to do that. Everything went fine until the website choked on my US credit card. I haven't gotten around to calling to see whether they'll take my money over the phone. Perhaps something has changed recently to allow seat selection on SAS flights if you're willing to pay for the privilege.
