Artificial Intelligence: Pros and Cons Essay

Introduction: on the artificial intelligence, in theory and practice, global impact of robot engineering in the world, societal impact of robot engineering in the world, works cited.

Because of the growing impact of science on various spheres of people’s lives, it has become vitally important for people to trace scientific discoveries and the changes which they trigger. However it is not always that people take the newly introduced invention as something that is going to change the society for better.

On the other hand, it takes huge time to understand the value and the importance of the given invention. Artificial intelligence, or robots, one of the most scandalous and brilliant inventions of the XX century, causing people’s concern for the world safety, has become one of the leading branches of the modern science, which troubles the mankind at present.

Petrified by the idea that artificial intelligence can be used in the military sphere against the mankind, people take the ideas of robots development rather reluctantly. Yet it must be admitted that the spheres of use where robots can be of great help for professionals is not limited by the army and war. With help of the new technologies, millions of lives can be saved. Yet it is doubtless that artificial intelligence is a double-sided sword.

Since the artificial intelligence engineering is designed to help people in such spheres as medicine and science, the global impact of the issue cannot be doubted. It is evident that robot engineering will gradually lead the mankind to the spheres of the highest development level and will slowly guide people to a stunning technological success.

Taking into consideration the stunning possibilities which robot engineering opens in front of people, it is evident that this branch of technologies has a brilliant future. One of the probable spheres of applying the new methods to practice is medicine. With help of the new technologies people will be able to hold the operations which used to be absolutely impossible and cope with the problems which used to be absolutely out of reach for the most experienced doctors.

Another prospective area of using the new technologies is the computer programming. Taking into account that the artificial intelligence, when programmed well, does not make mistakes which a man is so apt to, the impact of the new technologies becomes even greater.

It is also important to note that the robotic technologies can be used as a defensive means for the people of certain country. Maintaining constant control of the area, robots can provide the population with much greater level of safety than any army if squad. With help of their main feature, the disability of making a mistake, robots can help people feel more secure and at the same time increase the military authority of a given country, which is also of great economical and political benefit or the state and its population.

Serving as a “firewall for society” (Lin), robots will be able to help people evade the dramatic consequences of the enemies’ attack and will provide people with the security which they need so much. Thus, it can be considered that robots will find application both in the military sphere and in the sphere of medicine.

One more important use which concerns the everlasting conflict between the military issues and the society is the concern for the people in the army. Like any other people, they suffer hunger and cold as well. However, when they are substituted by robots, the army will become completely invincible – or, at least, it will not depend on such aspects anymore.

Therefore, it can be considered that with help of the artificial intelligence in the military service, people will undergo social changes – their idea of army and robots will shift to more positive one, triggering the associations of comfort and safety.

Thus, it can be supposed that the use of artificial intelligence will cause positive changes in the society. Progressive and promising, the new technologies will provide comfort and certainty for people.

Because of the fact that the modern engineering concerns a number of various social and ethical issues, it is possible to suggest that the societal impact of engineering is quite considerable.

In the light of the latest developments in the modern engineering, it can be suggested that the interconnection between engineering and politics and ethics becomes increasingly evident. In spite of the fact that the three spheres of human activity seemingly have nothing in common, engineering serves as a bridge that joins ethics together with the technical progress of the mankind.

Due to the fact that the modern mankind is highly preoccupied with the ethics of creating robots, the developments of the modern science engineering concerning the artificial intelligence cause quite a lot of concerns. Still it must be admitted that the issue is quite controversal and requires thorough considerations.

On the one hand it is evident that the science engineering is currently working on the most efficient ways to handle various medical and technical issues of paramount importance. In this sphere, the use of artificial intelligence is highly required. Thus, in this case the societal ad the scientific are opposed to each other in an unceasing conflict.

There is no doubt that the development of robots and the like machines will give pouch to further development of ever more progressive technologies. Yet on the other hand the ethical problem rooting from the new invention is quite obvious and demands certain solution as well.

Another ethical aspect that troubles people even more than the very idea of blasphemy is the probable consequences of an ill-thought use of robots. It is the military use of robots and artificial intelligence that causes the greatest concern. No matter how far the mankind could have gone, people till understand where such progressive technologies can lead when applied in the sphere of military actions.

Threatened by the idea of global war and the most tragic consequences of the further development of robots engineering, people consider this branch of science rather controversial. Being frightened by the very idea of war where robots are used as another kind of weapon of mass destruction, people fear that the development of robot engineering will drive to complete annihilation of the mankind.

Groundless and far-fetched, these ideas still trigger certain constrain even among certain layer of society. Thus, the ethical issue of robot-making technologies has been doubted not once and has finally driven to the idée fixe among the world population.

With help of robots, people can both build and destruct, which means that the new invention must not fall into the hands of the unwise. No matter how tempting the idea of flexing powerful technological muscles in front of the opponents might seem to the government, robots are not to be used as a means of attack.

However, when applied in the military sphere as the means of defense, robots can prove absolutely astounding perfect “soldiers”. In addition, the sphere of robots appliance must not be restricted to the military sphere with help of artificial intelligence, medicine and engineering can benefit as well.

Types of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is categorized in two types based on capabilities and functionalities.

Artificial Intelligence Type-1

Artificial intelligence type-2.

Narrow AI (weak AI): This is designed to perform a specific task with intelligence. It is termed as weak AI because it cannot perform beyond its limitations. It is trained to do a specific task. Some examples of Narrow AI are facial recognition (Siri in Apple phones), speech, and image recognition. IBM’s Watson supercomputer, self-driving cars, playing chess, and solving equations are also some of the examples of weak AI.

General AI (AGI or strong AI): This system can perform nearly every cognitive task as efficiently as humans can do. The main characteristic of general AI is to make a system that can think like a human on its own. This is a long-term goal of many researchers to create such machines.

Super AI: Super AI is a type of intelligence of systems in which machines can surpass human intelligence and can perform any cognitive task better than humans. The main features of strong AI would be the ability to think, reason, solve puzzles, make judgments, plan and communicate on its own. The creation of strong AI might be the biggest revolution in human history.

Reactive Machines: These machines are the basic types of AI. Such AI systems focus only on current situations and react as per the best possible action. They do not store memories for future actions. IBM’s deep blue system and Google’s Alpha go are the examples of reactive machines.

Limited Memory: These machines can store data or past memories for a short period of time. Examples are self-driving cars. They can store information to navigate the road, speed, and distance of nearby cars.

Theory of Mind: These systems understand emotions, beliefs, and requirements like humans. These kinds of machines are still not invented and it’s a long-term goal for the researchers to create one.

Self-Awareness: Self-awareness AI is the future of artificial intelligence. These machines can outsmart the humans. If these machines are invented then it can bring a revolution in human society.

Artificial Intelligence will bring a huge revolution in the history of mankind. Human civilization will flourish by amplifying human intelligence with artificial intelligence, as long as we manage to keep the technology beneficial.

Artificial intelligence has changed form in recent years.

What started in the public eye as a burgeoning field with promising (yet largely benign) applications, has snowballed into a more than US$100 billion industry where the heavy hitters – Microsoft, Google and OpenAI, to name a few – seem intent on out-competing one another.

The result has been increasingly sophisticated large language models, often released in haste and without adequate testing and oversight.

These models can do much of what a human can, and in many cases do it better. They can beat us at advanced strategy games , generate incredible art , diagnose cancers and compose music.

There’s no doubt AI systems appear to be “intelligent” to some extent. But could they ever be as intelligent as humans?

There’s a term for this: artificial general intelligence (AGI). Although it’s a broad concept, for simplicity you can think of AGI as the point at which AI acquires human-like generalised cognitive capabilities. In other words, it’s the point where AI can tackle any intellectual task a human can.

AGI isn’t here yet; current AI models are held back by a lack of certain human traits such as true creativity and emotional awareness.

We asked five experts if they think AI will ever reach AGI, and five out of five said yes.

Essay on Artificial Intelligence – a boon or bane

We are living in an era of rapid technological advancement, where artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live and work. You may have heard of popular AI models like ChatGPT, MidJourney, and others that have made headlines in the year 2023 for their impressive capabilities, such as text-to-speech, text-to-image, and text-to-video.

Indeed, thousands of people have lost their jobs due to the proliferation of chatbots and other AI-powered systems. This has led to a debate over whether AI is a boon or a bane for society. In this essay, we will explore both sides of this issue and examine the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI.

Students must stay exam-ready by reading these types of essays based on current affairs .

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field that is revolutionizing the way we live, work, and communicate. AI is a type of technology that is designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as understanding natural language, recognizing images, and making decisions. Some people believe that AI is a boon, while others believe it is a bane. In this essay, we will explore both sides of the argument.

On the one hand, AI can be seen as a boon. AI has the potential to revolutionize industries such as healthcare, education, and transportation. In healthcare, AI can help doctors diagnose diseases more accurately and quickly. In education, AI can personalize learning experiences for each student based on their strengths and weaknesses. In transportation, AI can help reduce traffic accidents and congestion by enabling self-driving cars.

AI can also make our lives more convenient. Virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa can help us manage our schedules, answer questions, and control our home devices with just our voice. AI-powered chatbots can help businesses provide better customer service by answering frequently asked questions and resolving issues more quickly.

On the other hand, AI can also be seen as a bane. One of the main concerns about AI is that it could potentially take over jobs that are currently done by humans. For example, self-driving cars could eliminate the need for taxi drivers and truck drivers. AI-powered robots could replace workers in factories and warehouses. This could lead to job losses and economic instability.

Another concern is that AI could be used for malicious purposes. AI could be used to create fake news and spread disinformation. It could also be used to create autonomous weapons that could make decisions without human intervention.

In conclusion, AI is a complex and multifaceted technology that can be both a boon and a bane. While AI has the potential to revolutionize industries, improve our lives, and make our world a better place, we must also be mindful of the potential risks and challenges associated with this technology. As we continue to develop and integrate AI into our lives, it is important that we carefully consider the ethical implications and strive to create a future where AI serves the common good.

If you were an ex-employee of Google, Meta, Alphabet or Microsoft, you would have surely termed Artificial intelligence a bane. On the other hand, for a graphic designer who has started earning a handsome amount of money with the help of Mid journey, artificial intelligence is no less than a boon or blessing for him.

Essay on Artificial Intelligence (1000 Words)

In our daily life, we study and see that new technology is emerging day by day. The level of thinking had changed. Our scientists have made several unique things.

Few of them are related to our intelligence. Now we see that automatic machines, robots, satellites and our smartphones all are examples of artificial intelligence.

In the least complex terms, Artificial Intelligence implies building up the capacity to think and comprehend and settle on choices in a machine. Man-made reasoning is viewed as the most progressive type of software engineering, and it makes a brain where the PC cerebrum can think like people.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Man-made brainpower (AI) or “man-made reasoning” is a part of software engineering, which is creating machines that can think and work like people.

Few examples for this are: recognition of sound or voice, problem handling and solving, teaching, learning and planning. It is the knowledge shown by machines rather than the normal insight shown by people and creatures.

It intends to make a PC controlled robot or programming that can think similarly as the human psyche thinks. Computerized reasoning is continually being set up to make it great.

In its preparation, it is shown understanding from machines, is set up to stay up with fresh data sources and perform human-like errands.

Along these lines, by the utilization of Artificial Intelligence, such a machine is being made. This can collaborate with its condition and work carefully on the information got.

If the AI concept, later on, is more grounded, at that point, it will resemble our companion. If you get an issue at that point, you will instruct yourself for it.

History of Artificial Intelligence

1950 was likewise the year when artificial insight research began. Examination in AI started with the improvement of electronic PCs and put away program PCs.

Much after this, for a long time, a connection couldn’t interface a PC to think or act like a human psyche. Afterwards, a disclosure that incredibly quickened the early advancement of AI was made by Norbert Wiener.

He has showed that all creative conduct of individuals is the consequence of the response component. Another progression toward present-day AI was when Logic Theorist was made.

Structured by Newell and Simon in 1955, it is viewed as the principal AI program.

Father of Artificial Intelligence

After many explorations, the individual who established the framework for artificial insight was the dad of AI, John McCarthy, an American researcher. In 1956, he composed a gathering “The Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence” to additionally build up the field of AI.

In which each one of those individuals who were keen on machine insight could take part. The motivation behind this gathering was to draw in the ability and mastery of intrigued individuals to assist McCarthy regarding this errand.

In later years the AI Research Center was framed at Carnegie Mellon University just as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Alongside this, AI additionally confronted many difficulties. The primary test they confronted was to manufacture a framework that could take care of an issue productively with almost no exploration.

The subsequent test is building a framework that can get familiar with an errand with no one else. The principal forward leap in man-made consciousness came when a Novel program called General Problem Solver (G.P.S) was made by Newell and Simon in 1957.

Kinds of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is grouped into four types, Arend Hintze thought of this arrangement; the classes are as per the following –

Responsive machines – These machines can respond to circumstances. A notable model could be Deep Blue, the IBM chess program. Outstanding, the chess program was won against the well-known chess legend Garry Kasparov.

Also, such machines need memory. These machines absolutely can’t use past encounters to educate future individuals. It breaks down every single imaginable choice and chooses the best.

Restricted Memory – These AI frameworks are fit for utilizing past encounters to illuminate future individuals. In contrast to responsive machines, it can make future expectations dependent on experience. Self-driving or automatic vehicles are an example of Artificial Intelligence.

The hypothesis of the brain – You should be shocked to realize that it alludes to getting others. It implies that others have their convictions, goals , wants, and feelings; this kind of AI doesn’t yet exist.

Mindfulness – This is the most elevated and most complex degree of Artificial Intelligence. Such frameworks have a feeling of self; also, they have mindfulness, awareness and feelings. This technique doesn’t exist yet. This Technique will be an upheaval.

Advantages of Artificial Intelligence

Computerized reasoning advantages scientists in financial aspects and law, yet additionally in specialized teaching, for example, authenticity, security, check, and control.

A few instances of innovation, for example, administration help decrease ailment and deprivation, making AI the most significant and most prominent creation in humanity’s history. Some significant advantages of AI are as per the following –

Computerized Assistance – Organizations with a propelled group use machines in the interest of people to associate with their clients as a help group or deals group.

Clinical Applications of AI – One of the most significant focal points of AI is that it is utilized in medication, use of man-made consciousness called “radio surgery”. It is right now utilized by enormous clinical associations in the healing activity of “tumors”.

Decrease of Errors – Another incredible bit of leeway of Artificial Intelligence is that it can diminish mistakes and increment the likelihood of arriving at higher exactness.

10 Lines About Artificial Intelligence

  • Artificial insight alludes to the knowledge of machines.
  • Artificial insight endeavors to make savvy PCs or machines like people.
  • The idea of Artificial Intelligence initially appeared in 1956.
  • Artificial insight diminishes blunders.
  • Artificial Intelligence Research Center is available in many spots far and wide.

Can Artificial Intelligence Grade Student Essays?

Grading papers is hard work. “I hate it,” a teacher friend confessed to me. And that’s a major reason why middle and high school teachers don’t assign more writing to their students. Even an efficient high school English teacher who can read and evaluate an essay in 20 minutes would spend 3,000 minutes, or 50 hours, grading if she’s teaching six classes of 25 students each. There aren’t enough hours in the day.

Could ChatGPT relieve teachers of some of the burden of grading papers? Early research is finding that the new artificial intelligence of large language models, also known as generative AI, is approaching the accuracy of a human in scoring essays and is likely to become even better soon. But we still don’t know whether offloading essay grading to ChatGPT will ultimately improve or harm student writing.

Tamara Tate, a researcher at University California, Irvine, and an associate director of her university’s Digital Learning Lab, is studying how teachers might use ChatGPT to improve writing instruction. Most recently, Tate and her seven-member research team, which includes writing expert Steve Graham at Arizona State University, compared how ChatGPT stacked up against humans in scoring 1,800 history and English essays written by middle and high school students.

Tate said ChatGPT was “roughly speaking, probably as good as an average busy teacher” and “certainly as good as an overburdened below-average teacher.” But, she said, ChatGPT isn’t yet accurate enough to be used on a high-stakes test or on an essay that would affect a final grade in a class.

Tate presented her study on ChatGPT essay scoring at the 2024 annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in Philadelphia in April. (The paper is under peer review for publication and is still undergoing revision.)

Most remarkably, the researchers obtained these fairly decent essay scores from ChatGPT without training it first with sample essays. That means it is possible for any teacher to use it to grade any essay instantly with minimal expense and effort. “Teachers might have more bandwidth to assign more writing,” said Tate. “You have to be careful how you say that because you never want to take teachers out of the loop.”

Writing instruction could ultimately suffer, Tate warned, if teachers delegate too much grading to ChatGPT. Seeing students’ incremental progress and common mistakes remain important for deciding what to teach next, she said. For example, seeing loads of run-on sentences in your students’ papers might prompt a lesson on how to break them up. But if you don’t see them, you might not think to teach it.

In the study, Tate and her research team calculated that ChatGPT’s essay scores were in “fair” to “moderate” agreement with those of well-trained human evaluators. In one batch of 943 essays, ChatGPT was within a point of the human grader 89 percent of the time. On a six-point grading scale that researchers used in the study, ChatGPT often gave an essay a 2 when an expert human evaluator thought it was really a 1. But this level of agreement – within one point – dropped to 83 percent of the time in another batch of 344 English papers and slid even farther to 76 percent of the time in a third batch of 493 history essays.  That means there were more instances where ChatGPT gave an essay a 4, for example, when a teacher marked it a 6. And that’s why Tate says these ChatGPT grades should only be used for low-stakes purposes in a classroom, such as a preliminary grade on a first draft.

Still, this level of accuracy was impressive because even teachers disagree on how to score an essay and one-point discrepancies are common. Exact agreement, which only happens half the time between human raters, was worse for AI, which matched the human score exactly only about 40 percent of the time. Humans were far more likely to give a top grade of a 6 or a bottom grade of a 1. ChatGPT tended to cluster grades more in the middle, between 2 and 5.

Tate set up ChatGPT for a tough challenge, competing against teachers and experts with PhDs who had received three hours of training in how to properly evaluate essays. “Teachers generally receive very little training in secondary school writing and they’re not going to be this accurate,” said Tate. “This is a gold-standard human evaluator we have here.”

The raters had been paid to score these 1,800 essays as part of three earlier studies on student writing. Researchers fed these same student essays – ungraded –  into ChatGPT and asked ChatGPT to score them cold. ChatGPT hadn’t been given any graded examples to calibrate its scores. All the researchers did was copy and paste an excerpt of the same scoring guidelines that the humans used, called a grading rubric, into ChatGPT and told it to “pretend” it was a teacher and score the essays on a scale of 1 to 6.

Older robo graders

Earlier versions of automated essay graders have had higher rates of accuracy. But they were expensive and time-consuming to create because scientists had to train the computer with hundreds of human-graded essays for each essay question. That’s economically feasible only in limited situations, such as for a standardized test, where thousands of students answer the same essay question.

Earlier robo graders could also be gamed, once a student understood the features that the computer system was grading for. In some cases, nonsense essays received high marks if fancy vocabulary words were sprinkled in them. ChatGPT isn’t grading for particular hallmarks, but is analyzing patterns in massive datasets of language. Tate says she hasn’t yet seen ChatGPT give a high score to a nonsense essay.

Tate expects ChatGPT’s grading accuracy to improve rapidly as new versions are released. Already, the research team has detected that the newer 4.0 version, which requires a paid subscription, is scoring more accurately than the free 3.5 version. Tate suspects that small tweaks to the grading instructions, or prompts, given to ChatGPT could improve existing versions. She is interested in testing whether ChatGPT’s scoring could become more reliable if a teacher trained it with just a few, perhaps five, sample essays that she has already graded. “Your average teacher might be willing to do that,” said Tate.

Many ed tech startups, and even well-known vendors of educational materials, are now marketing new AI essay robo graders to schools. Many of them are powered under the hood by ChatGPT or another large language model and I learned from this study that accuracy rates can be reported in ways that can make the new AI graders seem more accurate than they are. Tate’s team calculated that, on a population level, there was no difference between human and AI scores. ChatGPT can already reliably tell you the average essay score in a school or, say, in the state of California.

Questions for AI vendors

At this point, it is not as accurate in scoring an individual student. And a teacher wants to know exactly how each student is doing. Tate advises teachers and school leaders who are considering using an AI essay grader to ask specific questions about accuracy rates on the student level:  What is the rate of exact agreement between the AI grader and a human rater on each essay? How often are they within one-point of each other?

The next step in Tate’s research is to study whether student writing improves after having an essay graded by ChatGPT. She’d like teachers to try using ChatGPT to score a first draft and then see if it encourages revisions, which are critical for improving writing. Tate thinks teachers could make it “almost like a game: how do I get my score up?”

Of course, it’s unclear if grades alone, without concrete feedback or suggestions for improvement, will motivate students to make revisions. Students may be discouraged by a low score from ChatGPT and give up. Many students might ignore a machine grade and only want to deal with a human they know. Still, Tate says some students are too scared to show their writing to a teacher until it’s in decent shape, and seeing their score improve on ChatGPT might be just the kind of positive feedback they need.

“We know that a lot of students aren’t doing any revision,” said Tate. “If we can get them to look at their paper again, that is already a win.”

That does give me hope, but I’m also worried that kids will just ask ChatGPT to write the whole essay for them in the first place.

Free Essay – Artificial intelligence (Al) and human intelligence

Free essay – artificial intelligence (ai) and human intelligence.

Significant progress in AI has been achieved in recent years, especially with the development of machine learning and deep learning algorithms. By virtue of these developments, AI is now capable of activities formerly associated solely with human intellect, such as pattern recognition, natural language comprehension, and even the production of works of art. Though AI has made great strides, it has a long way to go before it can compete with human intellect in terms of complexity and adaptability.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is not likely to replace human intelligence for several reasons. Biological processes support human intellect, whereas algorithms and mathematical models form the basis of AI and are no less potent, but are fundamentally different. To yet, artificial intelligence has been unable to replicate the whole range of human intellect, which includes not just logical reasoning but also emotions, intuition, and original thought. More importantly, human intellect is formed over the course of a lifetime of events and learning, which is difficult for an AI system to mimic.

But it’s also impossible to deny that AI might one day be smarter than humans at some tasks. An example is the ability of AI to analyse large volumes of data considerably more quickly and correctly than a person. Because of this, AI is extremely helpful in areas like data analysis, where it can spot patterns and trends that a human being would have no hope of spotting. The speed and accuracy with which AI can complete such activities greatly outpaces that of any human.

Assuming that intelligence is a zero-sum game, however, the concept of AI replacing human intellect is problematic. Perhaps a more fruitful perspective would be to regard AI not as a competitor to human intellect but as a means to expand and improve upon it. Our strengths as humans lie in areas where AI has yet to make significant inroads, such as strategic thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence. By working together in this way, AI and human intellect may thrive.

Finally, while AI has made tremendous strides and may one day be smarter than humans, it is still far from replacing us completely. Given the unique characteristics of AI and the potential for it to complement human intellect rather than replace it, it seems likely that the two will coexist and mutually enrich one another in the future. Keeping these in mind as we advance AI research and development is essential to guaranteeing that the technology will be used for the benefit of humanity.

essay on artificial intelligence 750 words

Sample Band 9 Essay

With ever increasing technological advances, computers and robots are replacing human roles in different areas of society. This trend can also be seen in education, where interactive programs can enhance the educational experience for children and young adults. Whether, however, this revolution can also take over the role of the teacher completely is debatable, and I oppose this idea as it is unlikely to serve students well.

The roles of computers and robots can be seen in many areas of the workplace. Classic examples are car factories, where a lot of the repetitive precision jobs done on assembly lines have been performed by robots for many years, and medicine, where diagnosis, and treatment, including operations, have also been assisted by computers for a long time. According to the media, it won’t also be long until we have cars that are driven automatically.

It has long been discussed whether robots and computers can do this in education. It is well known that the complexity of programs can now adapt to so many situations that something can already be set up that has the required knowledge of the teacher, along with the ability to predict and answer all questions that might be asked by students. In fact, due to the nature of computers, the knowledge levels can far exceed a teacher’s and have more breadth, as a computer can have equal knowledge in all the subjects that are taught in school, as opposed to a single teacher’s specialisation. It seems very likely, therefore, that computers and robots should be able to deliver the lessons that teachers can, including various ways of differentiating and presenting materials to suit varying abilities and ages of students.

Where I am not convinced is in the pastoral role of teachers. Part of teaching is managing behaviour and showing empathy with students, so that they feel cared for and important. Even if a robot or computer can be programmed to imitate these actions, students will likely respond in a different way when they know an interaction is part of an algorithm rather than based on human emotion.

Therefore, although I feel that computers should be able to perform a lot of the roles of teachers in the future, they should be used as educational tools to assist teachers and not to replace them. In this way, students would receive the benefits of both ways of instruction.

Occupation Has Corrupted the Humanity of Israel’s Military

An illustration of a couch and next to it, a silhouette of a person wearing a soldier’s helmet and vest and holding a gun.

By Avner Gvaryahu

Mr. Gvaryahu is the director of Breaking the Silence, an organization of veterans opposed to the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank.

Israel’s military has brought utter devastation to the Palestinians of Gaza after the attack by Hamas on Oct. 7. But the extreme response is not only a reaction to the horrors of that day. It is also a product of the decades-long role the military has played in enforcing Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

The occupation has cultivated a longstanding disregard among Israeli soldiers for Palestinian lives and similar impulses in the words and actions of commanders can be seen to lie behind the horrors of what we are witnessing today.

Israel has governed a people denied basic human rights and the rule of law through constant coercion, threats and intimidation. The idea that the only answer to Palestinian resistance, both violent and nonviolent, is greater — and more indiscriminate — force has shown signs of becoming entrenched in the Israel Defense Forces and in Israeli politics.

I know this through the numerous testimonies collected by my organization, Breaking the Silence, which was formed in 2004 by a group of Israeli veterans to expose the reality of Israel’s military occupation. We know firsthand and from thousands of soldiers that military occupation is imposed on civilians through fear, which is instilled by the growing and often arbitrary use of force.

For 20 years, we have heard these soldiers speak of the gradual erosion of principles that, even if never fully upheld, were once seen as fundamental to the moral character of the Israel Defense Forces. We have continued our work despite criticism from the military and the government.

I also know this because I myself have undergone this moral corruption. I, like many Israeli soldiers, went into the military thinking I knew the difference between right and wrong and had a clear sense of the boundaries on legitimate use of force. But every boundary is destined to be redrawn in a military occupation, whose very existence relies on terrorizing a civilian population into submission.

I clearly remember one of the first times I entered the home of a Palestinian family, as a sergeant, in a village near Nablus in the West Bank in 2007. It was in the middle of the night and we were told that the house would make a good observation point. As we approached, we heard an elderly woman next door screaming in fear. We broke the window of her home and shone a flashlight. She was terrified, speaking unintelligibly. Her family was looking in from the other room, too scared to enter and calm her down. These people weren’t suspects. They just lived next door to the house we needed.

I was horrified, but I soon grew accustomed to such scenes. As soldiers, we used people’s houses for our purposes. We used people’s things. We used people. From home invasions to checkpoints, patrols to arrests, we eventually stopped seeing Palestinian civilians as real, living people. I quit asking myself: What do they feel? What do they think? How would I feel if soldiers barged into my house in the middle of the night? These questions, so crucial for morality and humanity, lost their meaning.

Since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and 240 kidnapped, over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed, some 1.7 million Palestinians have been displaced and 1.1 million Palestinians are facing catastrophic levels of food insecurity, according to the United Nations.

And so, as the war grinds on, we Israelis are not who we think we are. We may think we know our boundaries and principles; we may think we are on the side of right; we may think we are in control. Yet what was once unthinkable soon becomes the norm. The innocent, we say, must be protected. But we have lived for too long as an occupying power; too many among us see no one as innocent anymore. We see threats everywhere and in anyone, threats that, we feel, justify almost anything.

That may include using suffering to achieve military goals. “The international community warns of a humanitarian disaster in Gaza and of severe epidemics,” Giora Eiland, a retired major general and former head of the Israel National Security Council, wrote in November. “We must not shy away from this, as difficult as that may be,” he said, adding, “This is not about cruelty for cruelty’s sake, since we don’t support the suffering of the other side as a goal, but as a means.”

Israel has repeatedly maintained that it is doing all that it can to protect civilians. But the heart of this pattern of moral deterioration is in the military’s determination of who is a combatant.

The shifting sense of who is an enemy combatant and who isn’t, both in military procedures and soldiers’ attitudes, is especially clear in Israel’s periodic wars in Gaza, where the withdrawal of Israeli settlements and ground forces in 2005 cleared the way for harsher and less discriminate methods of war.

Take Operation Cast Lead, in 2008 and 2009, which began with an aerial attack on police stations in Gaza City and ultimately killed more than 240 policemen and injured around 750. After the fact, Israel claimed it did not violate the laws of war by targeting policemen since the “collective role of the Gaza ‘police’” was “an integral part of Hamas armed forces” and as such, they were effectively considered enemy combatants. But according to a United Nations fact-finding mission, the policemen killed in the attacks “cannot be said to have been taking a direct part in hostilities.”

Operation Protective Edge, in the summer of 2014, was the deadliest Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip since 1967 until the current war. More than 2,200 Palestinians were killed, 1,391 of them civilians , according to the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem. Many soldiers who took part in the operation have told Breaking the Silence that very little was required by their commanders to label a person an enemy combatant. Two unarmed women walking in an orchard, talking on their phones, were suspected of scouting Israeli forces — and were killed, one soldier told us. After a commander ordered their bodies to be checked, the conclusion was, “They were fired at — so of course, they must have been terrorists,” said the soldier whose identity like that of many of our witnesses we have kept anonymous to protect his safety.

Israel’s conduct in the current war demonstrates this viewpoint even more. A reservist officer recently told a journalist: “De facto, a terrorist is anyone the military kills inside the zone of combat.” This reckless interpretation of the rules of war has resulted in meaningless loss for Palestinians and Israelis alike. In December, the Israeli military mistakenly killed three Israeli hostages in Gaza who had been shirtless, unarmed and bearing a makeshift white flag.

The military said the shooting of the three men had violated its rules of engagement. But soldiers who participated in previous wars in Gaza report ed being instructed, upon entering areas where civilians had been warned to evacuate, to shoot anything that moves because anyone who stayed was considered a threat and a legitimate target. Similar reports are surfacing now.

In contrast to these attitudes, consider the 2002 Israeli bombing of the home of a top Hamas commander in Gaza City that killed him and 14 others, including eight children. A government committee concluded that faulty intelligence led to the high civilian death toll and implied that had it been known there were many civilians on site, the attack would have been aborted.

The shocking numbers of civilian casualties in the current war — nearly 13,000 women and children, according to Gazan authorities — may be the result, to some degree, of other changes in Israel’s targeting policies, too. According to intelligence sources that +972 Magazine and Local Call spoke with , on previous operations senior military operatives were defined as “human targets” who could be killed in their homes even if civilians were around. In the current war, the sources reportedly said, the term “human target” covers all Hamas fighters.

This has clearly led to a sharp increase in the number of targets, which has probably meant that the lengthy process of justifying operations has had to speed up. The military has employed artificial intelligence to help. According to the intelligence sources who spoke with +972 and Local Call, A.I. marked some 37,000 Palestinians in Gaza in the early days of the war for targeting as suspected Hamas militants, most of them of junior rank . It is unclear how many of that group have been killed. The Israeli military has disputed some of these allegations.

A military that controls civilians by force for decades is bound to lose its ethical compass. So does a society that sends its military on such a mission. The horrors of Oct. 7 have accelerated and intensified this process. The death and destruction that have been brought upon Gaza will shape the future of Palestinians and Israelis for generations to come. There will have to be a profound moral reckoning.

Avner Gvaryahu is the director of Breaking the Silence, an organization of Israeli veterans opposed to the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank.
