Texas Tech University’s Online PhD in Technical Communication and Rhetoric
2013, Programmatic Perspectives
Texas Tech has offered its PhD in Technical Communication and Rhetoric via distance education since 2004. Designed with the same requirements and expectations as its brick-and-mortar modality, the program has grown larger and more selective each year—our current rejection rate for applications stands at 85% and the number of students stands at approximately 55. The doctoral program (in both its modalities) emphasize five general areas: Rhetoric, Composition, and Technology; Technical Communication; Rhetorics of Science and Healthcare; Technology, Culture, and Rhetoric; and Visual Rhetoric, New Media, and User-Centered Design. In addition, the program has the most rigorous course requirements in research methods (4 courses) in the field of writing studies. The program made several institutional innovations in order to gain approval, and these innovations continue to benefit students, among them redefining “residency” to work better with both modalities and redefining “full-time” as 3 hours per semester. One of the most innovative aspects of the online program is its requirement that students attend a 2-week seminar in Lubbock—this “Nar” provides opportunities for dissertation defenses, professional development seminars, intensive graduate courses, lectures by outside scholars, doctoral annual reviews, and ample unscheduled time for students to meet with their committees

Technological colleges are normally market-oriented. Programs offering majors in computer science and technology in general do not, by definition, place emphasis on teaching humanities. Most of those programs, however, encourage students to include non-technical courses in their academic plan of study. At one particular technological college, computer science students can enroll in a one- semester course called Communication and Expression. Topics covered include a solid review of grammar and punctuation, as well as specifics in business communications. The introduction of rhetoric in those classes has met a response far more enthusiastic than expected. Those improvements were measured in a controlled experiment: students were required to produce texts on the same subject before and after classes on rhetoric — the balance between ethos, pathos and logos was measured in both instances. The results demonstrate the whole point of teaching humanities to technologists-to-be: they will be working for corporations, environments that comprise a complex set of activities requiring human interaction. Technical sales are just one example. Furthermore, they will be — like anyone — living in society, and these tools are needed to successfully play a role in societal development.

Doctoral candidate killed in crash weeks before presenting dissertation, family says
AUSTIN, Texas. (Gray News) - A University of Texas at Austin doctoral candidate was killed in a car accident weeks before presenting his dissertation.
Ryan Wallace, a doctoral candidate at the School of Journalism and Media, was on his way to pick up his sister’s kids when he was killed in a crash in Bastrop County, KXAN reports.
Wallace was killed in the crash involving a Hays CISD school bus in Bastrop County. The accident also killed 5-year-old Ulises Rodriguez Montoya.
Wallace’s family told KXAN that he was two weeks away from presenting his dissertation to receive his doctorate.
UT Journalism Professor Kathleen McElroy told KXAN that Wallace was very intelligent and insightful on many subjects.
“He was also a very giving person,” said McElroy. “I think that we all would have enjoyed having him as a faculty member. He would have been a great instructor and researcher in journalism.”
McElroy also started a GoFundMe to help Wallace’s family.
She shared that Wallace was a science writer and editor and he had worked with multiple publications,
Wallace’s committee will still meet on the day he was set to defend his dissertation to honor him.

KyeRon Lindsay enters transfer portal, leaves Texas Tech basketball
The Texas Tech basketball team has its first departure to the transfer portal this offseason.
KyeRon Lindsay has officially put his name into the portal, a Tech spokesman confirmed Tuesday. Lindsay appeared in nine games this season, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Lindsay was away from the team for the final three games of the regular season and each of the team's three postseason games. He played a season-high 23 minutes in the Feb. 20 home win against TCU, scoring eight points and grabbing seven rebounds.
UP TO DATE INFO: Texas Tech basketball transfer portal tracker: Who's in, who's out for Red Raiders?
Following the TCU game, Lindsay, who was expected to redshirt this season before Devan Cambridge's knee injury in December, played three minutes in the next two games and stepped away from the team after that.
Asked about Lindsay's absence following the win at Oklahoma State, head coach Grant McCasland said "it's not gonna work" for players who aren't committed to playing defense.
Lindsay began his college career at Georgia, where he played in 10 games with eight starts for the Bulldogs before transferring to Tech mid-season. He sat out the last half of the 2022-23 season due to transfer rules.

On the Chiefs’ Draft Board: Texas Tech cornerback Rayshad Williams

According to Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler , the Kansas City Chiefs were among the NFL teams that recently with Texas Tech cornerback Rayshad Williams during the Hula Bowl (college all-star game) in Orlando, Florida.
6’3” CB Rayshad Williams (Texas Tech) received heavy attention down at Hula, a source said. Former UCLA transfer met with the 49ers, Packers, Chiefs, Bears, Dolphins, Seahawks, Cowboys and Colts. Allowed a 56% comp pct with 20 PBUs during his collegiate career. — Ryan Fowler (@_RyanFowler_) January 17, 2024
Williams emerged as a standout prospect during his high school tenure at Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tennessee. With an impeccable 15-0 record during his junior year in 2016, Williams showcased his talent with impressive stats, recording 44 tackles and three interceptions. His senior year saw even more dominance with 64 tackles (four for a loss) and six interceptions.
Following his high school success, Williams began his collegiate journey at UCLA before transferring to Texas Tech. In his senior year with the Red Raiders, Williams demonstrated his skill with 37 tackles, seven pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery, earning praise for his defensive contributions.
How he fits with the Chiefs
Williams comes in at 6’3” and 215 lbs., perfectly embodying the prototype of what defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo covets in his cornerbacks, with the exception of Trent McDuffie. Williams seamlessly combines athleticism with football IQ to produce on the field.
Williams moves with grace, effortlessly mirroring receivers and shutting down passing lanes. His intuitive understanding of route concepts allows him to anticipate plays before they unfold, positioning himself strategically to disrupt passes and make plays on the ball. His footwork and hip flexibility are enviable, facilitating seamless transitions in coverage and ensuring he stays step-for-step with even the shiftiest of receivers.
The Chiefs will love his tenacity. He doesn’t shy away from the physical aspects of the game, willingly stepping up in run support fundamental tackles when needed. His willingness to mix it up in the trenches adds a valuable dimension to his game and endears him to teammates and coaches.
While Williams shines in press-man coverage, there’s always room for improvement. He will need to be committed to refining his skills in zone coverage and off-man situations. Occasionally, he may struggle with maintaining ideal leverage and cushion against receivers.
The bottom line
Projected to be a late-round pick or even an undrafted free agent, Williams presents a potential steal for the Chiefs, reminiscent of past late-round gems acquired by general manager Brett Veach. With proper coaching and harnessing his natural talent, Williams could bolster the Chiefs’ defensive arsenal and contribute on special teams, further amplifying his value to the team.
Keep an eye on this promising prospect as the NFL draft approaches, as he may prove to be a hidden gem for Kansas City.
