Modern Punjabi Literature has its emergence coinciding with the advent of British colonial era in Punjab after the end of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s rule. So the Punjabi Literature in historically Modern term started with the influence of British like any other Indian literature at that time. Punjab went under tremendous change and turmoil at political level after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the end of Khalsa Raj. British rulers were very much aware about the social and cultural situation of Punjab and they would exploit it with the same policy of divide and rule. The focus of my presentation is to analyse the Punjabi Literary writings in the Post-Independence India while comparing the pre and post situations. I have also tried to articulate the idea of Modernity as it has been perceived and practiced in Punjab and Punjabi literature. Similarly a brief account of debate on tradition and modernity is required to be taken up as it has been tackled in Punjabi literature.

This paper traces the history of Punjabi literature in Canada and examines the problems confronting its producers. Sandwiched between the indifference of mainstream Canadian community, and a high degree of expectation by scholars in the Punjab, Punjabi writers in Canada have had a difficult time making sense of their enterprise. Journal of Socialist Studies

This paper explores how the Ghadar legacy is interpreted by the Punjabi literary movement in Punjab, Pakistan. Putting Ghadar poetry into conversation with the work of these contemporary activists sheds light on unexplored facets of both. It unveils how these writers and thespians invoke Ghadar to subvert the narrow discourse of "Punjabiyat" and ethno-nationalist identity, and allows us to appreciate the politics of language that underpinned Ghadar di Goonj. The intertwining of these histories of literary dissent raises key questions for debates around radical literature and progressive writing in South Asia, by highlighting the role of vernaculars in reading subaltern consciousness and native traditions of revolt.

Punjab in History and Historiography: An Introduction

This volume seeks to consider the notion of Punjabiyat , a loosely defined term often used to describe a sentiment of belonging or attachment to Punjab and/or the foundations of a shared, cross-religious, cross-caste, cross-class culture. Is there an ‘idea of Punjab’ or ‘ideas of Punjab’ that help ground—as Punjabi—people from the region, now scattered across the globe? Or that connect those in Indian and Pakistani Punjab, divided by what is for most of them an impermeable border? In other words, despite political, social, religious—indeed, historical—differences, are there notions of Punjabiyat /Punjabiness that constitute Punjab as a region conceptually in history, culture, and practice? The essays in this volume, through their careful analyses of aspects of Punjabi social, cultural, political, and religious history, taken collectively suggest that there are, indeed.

Part of the impetus for this collection is that volumes on Punjabi culture/s or histories—especially of its modern period—have not been commonplace in academic circles. One is more likely to come across titles that delve into specific aspects of its culture or people, for instance works on ‘Sikh religion’ or the ‘Sikh people’, ‘Islamic identity’ or ‘Hindu reform’ in their Punjabi regional context. Such endeavours are entirely valid and reasonable, and perhaps even necessary, but it is difficult to comprehend the elision if not erasure of Punjabi identity from academic writing. Given that it has been easier for diasporic Punjabis to evoke a much wider and an inclusive Punjabi identity than it has been for Punjabis residing in India or Pakistan, one wonders if this elision is yet another result of the political divisions that have marked Punjab’s twentieth-century history? Have these divisions, whether of 1947 or the postcolonial period, made other identity markers more apt or emotionally more satisfying than the idea of belonging/originating/associating with a region? Or could it be that Punjabi identity is particularly open to appropriation, and even incorporation within other identities—for instance Sikh identity in Indian Punjab?

ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਇਕ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੇਹਾਲ ਹਨੇਰਾ । ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਉੱਨਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਮਰਦ। ਸਾਡੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ । ਪਰ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਵਲ ਕੋਈ ਉਚੇਚੇ ਯਤਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ। ਇਹੋ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਡਾ ਦੇਸ਼ ਉੱਨਤੀ ਦੀ ਦੌੜ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ । ਨਾਰੀ ਜਾਤੀ ਸਮਾਜ ਦਾ ਅੱਧਾ ਭਾਗ ਹੈ । ਜੇ ਅੱਧੀ ਵਸੋਂ ਅਨਪੜ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ਤਾਂ ਦੇਸ਼ ਉੱਨਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿੱਖਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੂਹ ਹੀ, ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ? ਜੇ ਅਸੀ ਇਕ ਪੁਰਬ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਅਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਤਾ ਇਕ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਅਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਜੇ ਇਕ ਨਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਸਿੱਖਿਅਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਨਾਰੀ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਦਾ ਸਾਧਨ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਭੈਣ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਵੀਰ ਨੂੰ, ਪਤਨੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ, ਮਾਂ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਧੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਜਾਂ ਮੰਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਪਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।

ਸੁਹਜ ਪਿਆਰ, ਮਿਲਾਪ, ਕੋਮਲਤਾ, ਸਹਿਟਸ਼ੀਲਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਬੋਲ ਆਦਿ ਦੈਵੀ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਨੇ ਮਰਦਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਇਸਤਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਬਖਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ । ਆਪਣੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਈ ਕੰਮ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਮਰਦ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸੁਹਣੇ ਨਿਭਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ-ਅਧਿਆਪਕ, ਏਅਰ-ਹੋਸਟੈਸ, ਸੇਲਜ ਗਰਲ, ਨਰਸ ਆਦਿ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ।

ਜੇ ਮਰਦ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਔਰਤ ਅਨਪੜ੍ਹ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਏ । ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਦੋ ਪਹੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਗੱਡੀ ਡਰਾਮਗਾਉਣ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ । ਅਨਪਤ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਚੱਜੇ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਖਰਚ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਈ । ਬੱਜਟ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੀਂ ਚਲਾ ਸਕਦੀ । ਜੇ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪੜੀ ਲਿਖੀ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਖਰਚੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਬੇਲੋੜੇ ਖਰਚੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗੀ ।

ਪਤੀ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖੀਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਤਨੀ ਸਲਾਹਕਾਰ । ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰਾਜੇ ਦਾ ਵਜ਼ੀਰ | ਇਕ ਸਿੱਖਿਅਤ ਨਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮੇਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਯੋਗ ਸਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਆਦਮੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਹੁਤਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਉੱਨਤੀ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੁਘੜ ਮਾਵਾਂ ਹੀ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਹਨ । ਇਕ ਸਿਆਣੀ ਮਾਂ ਬੱਚੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੁੱਢ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਨਤਿਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਹ ਧਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਹਾਨ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਵੇ । ਕਈ ਲੋਕ ਔਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਰ ਦੀਵਾਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੰਦ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਘਰੇਲੂ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮਿਤ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਉਹ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਵਿਚ ਕੁੱਝ ਦਲੀਲਾਂ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।

ਇੰਦਰਾ ਗਾਂਧੀ, ਸਰੋਜਨੀ ਨਾਇਡੂ, ਰਾਣੀ ਝਾਂਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਡਮ ਕਿਉਗੇ ਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਨਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਉਦਾਹਰਣਾਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਯੋਗ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਤੇ ਮਰਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ ਦਿਤਾ। ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਨਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਨਿਖਾਰਿਆਂ ਜਾਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਲੇਖ: ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਖ਼ਿੱਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ – ਜਾਚ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ – ਸਹਿਣ , ਕਦਰਾਂ – ਕੀਮਤਾਂ , ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ , ਮਨੌਤਾਂ , ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ , ਰੀਤੀ – ਰਿਵਾਜਾਂ , ਖਾਣ – ਪੀਣ , ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ , ਬੋਲੀ ਤੇ ਤਿਥ ਤਿਉਹਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਮੇਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ , ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਤੀ ਓਪਰੀ ਨਜ਼ਰੇ ਸਧਾਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ , ਪਰੰਤੂ ਇਹ ਇਕ ਜਟਿਲ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਹੈ ।

ਪਰਿਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਤੇ ਸਰੂਪ

ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ‘ ਸੱਭਯ ‘ ਅਤੇ ‘ ਆਚਾਰ ‘ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਮੇਲ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ , ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਭਾਵ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਚਰਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ , ਜੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਿਯਮਬੱਧਤਾ ਦਾ ਧਾਰਨੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਨ – ਜਾਚ ਲਈ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਨੇਮਬੱਧ ਅਸੂਲ ਅਪਣਾਏ ਗਏ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ , ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰਾ ਲੋਕ – ਸਮੂਹ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸਮਾਜ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ , ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।

ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਲਈ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਵਿਚ ‘ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤੀ ‘ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਚ ‘ ਕਲਚਰ ‘ ( Culture ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਲਈ ਵੱਖ – ਵੱਖ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਭਾਵ ਇੱਕੋ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰਹਿਣ – ਸਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਸੂਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਿਯਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ , ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ‘ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ‘ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਵਰਗ – ਵੰਡ

ਭਾਰਤ ਅਨੇਕਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਏਕਤਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਦੇਸ਼ ਹੈ , ਜਿੱਥੇ ਵਿਭਿੰਨ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਅਰਥਾਤ ਜੀਵਨ – ਜਾਚ ਦੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਨਮੂਨੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹਨ ।ਇਸ ਅਨੇਕਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਉਪ – ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਵਿਲੱਖਣਤਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਏਕਤਾ ਹੈ । ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਲੇਖ (Essay on Punjabi Culture) ਲਿਖਣ ਲਈ ਅਕਸਰ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਉਪ – ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਮੁੱਚੇ ਜਨ-ਸਮੂਹ ਜਾਂ ਸਮਾਜ ਨਾਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉੱਥੇ ਉਪ – ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਉਪ – ਸਮੂਹ ਜਾਂ ਸਥਾਨਿਕ ਖਿੱਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧਿਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ , ਤਾਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ , ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਮਰਾਠੀ ਆਦਿ ਇਸਦੇ ਉਪ – ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਹਨ ।

ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੇਕਰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ‘ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ’ ਹੈ , ਤਾਂ ਮਾਝੀ , ਦੁਆਬੀ , ਮਲਵਈ ਤੇ ਪੁਆਧੀ ਆਦਿ ਇਸਦੇ ਉਪ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਹਨ । ਇਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਖ – ਵੱਖ ਜਾਤਾਂ , ਧਰਮਾਂ , ਬੋਲੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਕਿੱਤਿਆਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਅਪਣਾਈ ਜੀਵਨ – ਜਾਚ ਉਪ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਅਖਵਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਿਕ ਪਿਛੋਕੜ

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ (Punjabi Culture) ਇਕ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ – ਜਾਚ ਹੈ , ਜਿਸਦਾ ਖੇਤਰ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਹੈ , ਪਰੰਤੂ ਇਸਨੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ , ਸਗੋਂ ਸਮੁੱਚੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕਾਇਮ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ , ਜਿਸਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਸਦੇ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਪਛਾਣ – ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਹਨ । ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਧਾਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਤੌਰ ‘ ਤੇ ਆਰੀਆ ਜਾਤੀ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ । ਵੈਦਿਕ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਮਹਾਨ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਮਹਾਨ ਸ੍ਰੋਤ ਰਿਗਵੇਦ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੰਢਿਆਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਰਚਿਆ ਗਿਆ ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ (Punjabi Culture) ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪੜਾਅ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ , ਸਗੋਂ ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਮਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਇਸਦੀ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਹੈ । ਰਿਗਵੈਦਿਕ ਕਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸੱਤਾਂ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ‘ ਸਪਤ ਸਿੰਧੂ ‘ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ । ਮਹਾਂਭਾਰਤ ਕਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ , ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਇਸਨੂੰ ‘ ਪੰਚ – ਨਦ ‘ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪੁਕਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਣ ਲੱਗਾ ।

ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ( ਪੰਜ + ਆਬ ) ਅਰਥਾਤ ਪੰਜਾਂ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪੁਕਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਣ ਲੱਗਾ । ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਵਾਪਰੀਆਂ । ਪਾਣਿਨੀ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੇ ਵਿਆਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਵੀ ਇਸੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ । ਤਕਸ਼ਿਲਾ ਵਰਗੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ – ਵਿਦਿਆਲੇ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਵੀ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੋਈ ।

ਭਗਵਤ ਗੀਤਾ ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜਿਹੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਵੀ ਇਸੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਹੋਈ । ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਤੇ ਭੂਗੋਲਿਕ ਸਰਹੱਦਾਂ ਅਜੋਕੇ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਤੋਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਸਨ । ਮੱਧਕਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਇਸਲਾਮ ਧਰਮ ਤੇ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਖੇਤਰ ਰਿਹਾ , ਜਦ ਕਿ ਸੂਫ਼ੀ ਫ਼ਕੀਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ , ਭਾਰਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸਲਾਮੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਸੁਮੇਲ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਯਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਰੋਈ ਮਾਨਵਤਾਵਾਦੀ ਸੋਚ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਕ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਧਰਮ ( ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ) ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ਲਸਫ਼ੇ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ , ਜੋ ਕਿ ਅਜੋਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਦਾ ਧੁਰਾ ਬਣਿਆ । ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਲੇਖ (Essay on Punjabi Culture) ਲਿਖਣ ਲਈ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅਕਸਰ ਹੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਆਪਣੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਿਕ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦਿਆਂ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸੱਤ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪੰਜ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ 1947 ਵਿਚ ਢਾਈ ਕੁ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਸ਼ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ । ਫਿਰ 1 ਨਵੰਬਰ , 1966 ਨੂੰ ਇਸਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਟੋਟੇ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਹੋਰ ਸੁਕੜ ਗਿਆ ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ (Punjabi Culture) ਦੇ ਲੱਛਣ

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ (Punjabi Culture) ਦੇ ਵਿਲੱਖਣ ਪਛਾਣ – ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਹਨ । ਹਿੰਦੁਸਤਾਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ – ਦੁਆਰ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਸੀ ਸੂਰਮਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ , ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਦਾ ਜਜਬਾ ਕੁੱਟ – ਕੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ । ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੋ . ਪੂਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਜਵਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ‘ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਖੌਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਜ਼ਾਲਮ ਹਾਕਮਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਝੁਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ , ਸਗੋਂ ਅਣਖ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਜਿਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਪੰਜਾਬ ਅੰਨ ਦਾ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਹੈ , ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭੀਖ ਮੰਗਣਾ ਤੇ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਬਣਨ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਤਰਜ਼ੀਹ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ (Punjabi Culture) ਦਾ ਇਕ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਲੱਛਣ ਇਸਦਾ ਮਿੱਸਾਪਨ ਹੈ । ਸਦੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰੀ ਹਮਲਾਵਰਾਂ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਂ , ਮੁਗ਼ਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ‘ ਮਿੱਸਾ ’ ਤੇ ‘ ਦਰੁਸਤ ਹਾਜ਼ਮੇ ਵਾਲਾ ’ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ । ਇੱਥੋਂ ਬੋਲੀ , ਰਹਿਣ – ਸਹਿਣ , ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ , ਰਸਮ – ਰਿਵਾਜ ਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਇਸਦੇ ਬਹੁ – ਨਸਲੀ , ਬਹੁ – ਜਾਤੀ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਕੌਮੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਹੋਣ ਵਲ ਇਸ਼ਾਰਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।

ਬਦਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ

ਬਦਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ: ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਿਹਨਤੀ ਸੁਭਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਵੀ ਇਕ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਬਣੇ ਹਨ , ਜਿਸ ਸਦਕੇ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਦੀ ਹਰੀ – ਕ੍ਰਾਂਤੀ ਨੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਅੰਨ ਦੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਭਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ । ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਰੱਜਵੇਂ ਪਾਣੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਹਾਲ ਬਣਾਇਆ , ਪਰੰਤੂ ਅੱਜ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਕਾਰਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਟਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਪੜ੍ਹ – ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਬਿਹਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਲਈ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਵਸੇ ਹਨ , ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ (Punjabi Culture) ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ – ਵਿਹਾਰ ਬਦਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । ਅੱਜ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨੌਜਵਾਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਲ ਦੌੜ , ਸੁਖਾਲਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਜਿਊਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਆਦਿ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ (Punjabi Culture) ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੂਬ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ । ਪਰੰਤੂ ਇਸਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ (punjabi culture)ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂਲ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਇਮ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਵਧ – ਫੁੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।

ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ – ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ (Punjabi Culture) ਦੇ ਅਲੋਪ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਕੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਹਨ?

ਉੱਤਰ – ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ ਕਾਰਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਟਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਪੜ੍ਹ – ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਬਿਹਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਲਈ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਵਸੇ ਹਨ।

ਉੱਤਰ – ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰਹਿਣ – ਸਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਸੂਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਿਯਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ , ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ‘ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ‘ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
