When I am asked to pinpoint what has shaped me into who I am today, I have to conclude that it is because of my family and my native city of Athens, Greece. I was born and raised in the northern suburb of Athens which was one of the safest areas of the city. However, after the economic crisis of 2008 many things changed. I was twelve years old when I saw a police officer kill a fifteen year old boy from my school. This was the beginning of a new era for Greece. People took to the streets in protest. After a week, most of the buildings were burned or heavily damaged. This was the first time that I understood that something was going wrong and it changed my perception of the world. I started researching information about the police, the economic crisis, and politics.

Although five years have passed, not many things have changed, but those five years were crucial for me as I went from child, to teenager, and now, to an adult. Living in Athens played huge role in this change as I learned to survive in tough conditions, and I realized that I am lucky just because I have something to eat and a home in which to live.

My family has shaped my character through many changes we have experienced together in just a few short years. When I was a young child, everything was fine since both my parents loved each other and we did not face any economic problems. In 2006, my grandfather entered the hospital, and then I realized the major financial problems we faced. This did not disturb us though because we were supporting each other. After my grandfather died in 2007, our economic situation became better despite the downturn of the Greek economy. We moved to a bigger house, and I bought a dog that I had always wanted. It seemed that the worse had passed. The next five years are what shaped my personality more than anything.

My parents started fighting every day, and my father left home in 2009 when I was fourteen years old. Up until a year and a half ago, my mother cried every day and confided her problems to me. As the only child, I realized that I had to mature fast in order to protect and help my mother. Fortunately, we did not suffer financially because my father supported us and still supports us to this day. My father and I tried to have the best possible relationship we could despite the fact that he was not home. It has become easier over the years, but he and I both know it will never be the same.

I had to be a good student because my mother was always telling me that I have to set high goals and work to achieve them. My goal has always been to study in the United States. I tried hard as I could to not concentrate on the things happening in the family. Many times I did not even want to come home from school, but my friends helped me to overcome this. I discovered how important water-skiing was for me. The only time that I could forget everything else was when I was on skis. I began to focus on my athletic goal to be a successful water-skier.

Even though the years 2009 to 2012 were the worst years of my life, I realized some truths about life, and I am grateful that I learned them so young. First of all, money does not buy happiness. Second, family and friends are important to get through life’s misfortunes. Finally, the best things in life are not things. My misfortunes molded me into the young adult I am now.

An article today about a man who did not officially have a first name until he was 19 asks the question, “What’s in a name?” Do you like your name? How did you get it? How has it shaped you? If, like this man, you had to officially name yourself now, would you keep the name you’ve had all your life, or take another? Why?

Erik Eckholm writes about cartoonist Max Pauson and how life without a name shaped him:

…this promising art student’s strong sense of self was hard-earned. It was forged in an unstable, emotionally wrenching childhood and, in an odd detail that might serve as a metaphor for his struggles, it comes after 19 years of life without a legal name. His birth certificate read only “(baby boy) Pauson.” Name to come. His father had disappeared. His mother — in his words, “a pack rat who takes a really long time to decide on anything” — did not pick a first name at the hospital in San Francisco in 1990. And she never followed up, leaving him in a rare and strange limbo. While Mr. Pauson was long aware of the blank spot in his identity, he never quite had the time or means to correct it. He lived with his mother in a house that sometimes lacked electricity. He spent time in foster care and returned to live with his mother in homeless shelters and in public housing. Finally, at 15, he ran away to live with friends’ families. In an era when identities and backgrounds are scrutinized more than ever, he still managed to get into schools, though he never tried to obtain a driver’s license.

Kelly Fortunato is a name that I have answered to multiple times. It has appeared on bills, on my college transcripts, and has been called out loud at the DMV. Unbeknownst to me, it has changed my gender countless times, and prompted me to explain myself on several occasions. People are suprised when I actually introduce my self as Fortunato Kelly. I know that it sounds like the pen name of a 18th century ex-pat, hints at luck, or even passes as regal, but it’s entirely mine, and of varied construction. The latin roots shine through, but I’m blessed to be named after my mother’s father, who was of Filipino, Chinese, and Malay blood. The Kelly roots come from my father, who lools like his Irish, German, and Portuguee roots suggest he should. In analyzing my personal genealogy, I find myself compelled to get others to seek comfort in their individual histories, know where they come from, and live up to the standards set by our lineage in the American experience. Your name is the one part of your life that society cannot strip away. Even the most destitute people, those living on the streets, do have one thing to cherish– their identity. A name is only as special as one makes it throughout their life, and is a reflection of how well one lives their life. On the one end of the spectrum, you have those who have ended up making their names known for the wrong reason, aka the FBI Ten Most Wanted Criminals. On the other end, you have those people whose names are to be revered because of the good they have done or the influence they have. And then there are those whose names have been stamped into history. If one is capable of doing something extremely remarkable (or extremely terrible during a critical period) history will remember your name long after you have died and impress upon you legacy. Names are an essential tool, without which one cannot hope to fathom working in the modern world.

My name in particular, Zahra, is derived from Arabic origins meaning “starlight.” I find my name to be a bit out of tune with other people, but generally I am quite fond of it. I sometimes feel queer about it though because I feel that people find it a bit odd to say, but I don’t mind in the least. Originally, my mother wanted to name me Aisha, but a few days after I was born, I became very sick. My grandmother suggested that the name “Aisha” didn’t “suit me very well” and was the cause of my illness. Of course that was not true, but my mm reconsidered and changed my name to Zahra.

My middle name came from my grandmother’s name. I was named after her because my mother is very close with her, and the name has a good message. I got my first name because my mom liked it. It’s Italian, and I am Italian. My mom was going to name both my brothers my name if they were girls.

I was born in Vicenza, Italy, on the army base. My mom and other women on the base would pick Italian or Latin names. So I was named Mercedes. Many people compare my name to the car, but I tell them this; Benz, the car maker, got the name Mercedes from the daughter of a friend of his, who was a French Financer. I love my name, not because it is named after the car, but because its’ meaning. Mercedes drivesa latin word that means merciful and I love it!!!

My name is Chrysanthi. I love my name and i would never change it. It means ”golden flower”.

My name is Samantha , and I don’t think I would want to change my name because I can be called by short nick names. Like sammy, or sam is fine with me. My mom and dad thought of the name, but this was going to be my middle name but my dad liked the name Samantha better. I think my name fits me well, and I wouldn’t want to change it at all.

I have been called Mickey, Mickey Mouse, Rob, Robbie, Robinarama. Don’t mind nicknames if they are from good friends or family. Another insulting use of general nicknames for females is, “sweetheart, honey, babe, etc. by men with whom you are NOT familiar. I will always correct them by telling them, “My name is not honey,” or ” I have a name, address me by it.” You don’t hear men being called babe or honey by strangers. Absolutely unacceptable.

"One damned thing after another" is how Aldous Huxley described the essay: "a literary device for saying almost everything about almost anything."

As definitions go, Huxley's is no more or less exact than Francis Bacon's "dispersed meditations," Samuel Johnson's "loose sally of the mind" or Edward Hoagland's "greased pig."

Since Montaigne adopted the term "essay" in the 16th century to describe his "attempts" at self-portrayal in prose , this slippery form has resisted any sort of precise, universal definition. But that won't an attempt to define the term in this brief article.

In the broadest sense, the term "essay" can refer to just about any short piece of nonfiction  -- an editorial, feature story, critical study, even an excerpt from a book. However, literary definitions of a genre are usually a bit fussier.

One way to start is to draw a distinction between articles , which are read primarily for the information they contain, and essays, in which the pleasure of reading takes precedence over the information in the text . Although handy, this loose division points chiefly to kinds of reading rather than to kinds of texts. So here are some other ways that the essay might be defined.

Standard definitions often stress the loose structure or apparent shapelessness of the essay. Johnson, for example, called the essay "an irregular, indigested piece, not a regular and orderly performance."

True, the writings of several well-known essayists ( William Hazlitt and Ralph Waldo Emerson , for instance, after the fashion of Montaigne) can be recognized by the casual nature of their explorations -- or "ramblings." But that's not to say that anything goes. Each of these essayists follows certain organizing principles of his own.

Oddly enough, critics haven't paid much attention to the principles of design actually employed by successful essayists. These principles are rarely formal patterns of organization , that is, the "modes of exposition" found in many composition textbooks. Instead, they might be described as patterns of thought -- progressions of a mind working out an idea.

Unfortunately, the customary divisions of the essay into opposing types --  formal and informal, impersonal and familiar  -- are also troublesome. Consider this suspiciously neat dividing line drawn by Michele Richman:

Post-Montaigne, the essay split into two distinct modalities: One remained informal, personal, intimate, relaxed, conversational and often humorous; the other, dogmatic, impersonal, systematic and expository .

The terms used here to qualify the term "essay" are convenient as a kind of critical shorthand, but they're imprecise at best and potentially contradictory. Informal can describe either the shape or the tone of the work -- or both. Personal refers to the stance of the essayist, conversational to the language of the piece, and expository to its content and aim. When the writings of particular essayists are studied carefully, Richman's "distinct modalities" grow increasingly vague.

But as fuzzy as these terms might be, the qualities of shape and personality, form and voice, are clearly integral to an understanding of the essay as an artful literary kind. 

Many of the terms used to characterize the essay -- personal, familiar, intimate, subjective, friendly, conversational -- represent efforts to identify the genre's most powerful organizing force: the rhetorical voice or projected character (or persona ) of the essayist.

In his study of Charles Lamb , Fred Randel observes that the "principal declared allegiance" of the essay is to "the experience of the essayistic voice." Similarly, British author Virginia Woolf has described this textual quality of personality or voice as "the essayist's most proper but most dangerous and delicate tool."

Similarly, at the beginning of "Walden, "  Henry David Thoreau reminds the reader that "it is ... always the first person that is speaking." Whether expressed directly or not, there's always an "I" in the essay -- a voice shaping the text and fashioning a role for the reader.

Fictional Qualities

The terms "voice" and "persona" are often used interchangeably to suggest the rhetorical nature of the essayist himself on the page. At times an author may consciously strike a pose or play a role. He can, as E.B. White confirms in his preface to "The Essays," "be any sort of person, according to his mood or his subject matter." 

In "What I Think, What I Am," essayist Edward Hoagland points out that "the artful 'I' of an essay can be as chameleon as any narrator in fiction." Similar considerations of voice and persona lead Carl H. Klaus to conclude that the essay is "profoundly fictive":

It seems to convey the sense of human presence that is indisputably related to its author's deepest sense of self, but that is also a complex illusion of that self -- an enactment of it as if it were both in the process of thought and in the process of sharing the outcome of that thought with others.

But to acknowledge the fictional qualities of the essay isn't to deny its special status as nonfiction.

Reader's Role

A basic aspect of the relationship between a writer (or a writer's persona) and a reader (the implied audience ) is the presumption that what the essayist says is literally true. The difference between a short story, say, and an autobiographical essay  lies less in the narrative structure or the nature of the material than in the narrator's implied contract with the reader about the kind of truth being offered.

Under the terms of this contract, the essayist presents experience as it actually occurred -- as it occurred, that is, in the version by the essayist. The narrator of an essay, the editor George Dillon says, "attempts to convince the reader that its model of experience of the world is valid." 

In other words, the reader of an essay is called on to join in the making of meaning. And it's up to the reader to decide whether to play along. Viewed in this way, the drama of an essay might lie in the conflict between the conceptions of self and world that the reader brings to a text and the conceptions that the essayist tries to arouse.

At Last, a Definition—of Sorts

With these thoughts in mind, the essay might be defined as a short work of nonfiction, often artfully disordered and highly polished, in which an authorial voice invites an implied reader to accept as authentic a certain textual mode of experience.

Sure. But it's still a greased pig.

A family of origin is that particular family where one was born or adopted into, and it includes people who participate in raising an individual from childhood. The family origin of an individual has significant importance because it plays a critical role in shaping child core beliefs, family beliefs, and the purpose of human life (Galvin, Braithwaite, & Bylund, 2015). The family beliefs, rules and values are passed down from one generation to another by living together most of the time. This is how an individual’s family of origin is perpetuated. The use of images, themes, boundaries, and biosocial beliefs can influence an individual’s understanding of the family of origin.

Reflecting on the past is now easier than never before with the use of images. Images help people remember that past and, therefore, crucial for understanding the family origin of an individual. With the help of images, I can vividly understand how we were brought up with my other siblings, myself being the youngest of all. The images also capture other family members who were instrumental in shaping our current lives, even though they are no longer with us. With the help of images, I can understand that, however, my father and mother had other children they could come together and raise us together with my grandmother with utmost care and love.

One of my family’s most evident themes is love and care, where parents watched over our grandmother and us and my elder siblings. With the support of the photographs taken during that time, we can conclude that we had very loving parents and grandmother and could spend all their time and resources to see us happy. When I talk about the care, it reminds one time when I was sick, and my grandmother and my parents could all come together to the hospital where I was admitted, and we could spend the entire day with them sitting by my side.

Even though my family was loving and caring, they were also strict, and if one is found on the wrong side of the family rules, he/she will not miss disciplinary action. Strict rules guided my family, and I remember one day, my older brother was bitten thoroughly by my grandmother after failing to attend a church service and instead when out for fishing with his friends. My family had specific boundaries with which one can operate, and the entire family could not tolerate any individual who goes against the family’s social boundaries.

When I recall some of the beliefs that my family used to share with us makes me admit that what they were saying modified our lives today. Since our family was a middle-income family, our parents were struggling financially to see us through school and ensure that we live a good life in the future. They believed that changing the future was possible. The guidance and the beliefs that our family cultivated in us while we were young transformed our current lives and created an actual picture of the life we were living back then.

Admittedly, the family of origin plays a significant role in shaping the life of an individual. When the family is caring and protective, the lives of children from that particular family will be having significant differences with children from other families with no protection or love. The family needs to uphold good morals and good values because this had a significant impact on children’s lives when they grew up.

A variety of our cultural perspectives on ethnicity, race, and identity offers a wide range of perspectives that affect our individual and collective characters and perception of ourselves and some of the important roles played by these factors in clarifying how we interact with the world around us. This enables us to understand racial and ethnic identity growth and articulates the unique experiences in the past and present of various ethnic groups. Ethnicity affects almost everyone in life. It has a positive influence in that it may provide us with a sense of identity and belonging enabling us to understand who we are and our origin, according to Assiri et al (2013). It can have negative influence by, creating divisions between groups of people resulting in discrimination, prejudice and conflicts or wars. Members of a certain ethnic group have a shared identity and historical sense. An ethnic group is a collection of people that considers itself different from other people in a way and have a common heritage and background. Different factors distinguish people from one another through skin color, nationality, language, cultural traditions etc. Ethnicity develops and changes with time, hence particular ethnic group emerges and changes with time as a result of social and political developments. I am a Saudi Arabian female citizen coming from a big single parent family. I am in America to further my studies. I am a Muslim by birth. I am ethnically an Arab, as we immigrated as pilgrims and settled in the Hijaz region near Red Sea coast. We came from the Arabian sub-continent and Arab countries. Saudis live with many other groups of people including Asians from India, and Pakistan, South Korean citizens, and many others. The Saudi Arabian government does not permit non-Muslims to go in into the Medinah and Mecca cities (Al-Gahtani et al., 2007). Our culture mostly is Arabian and Islamic and is intensely religious, traditional and a family oriented structure. Many traditions and values are centuries old which cane from Arabic civilization. The dominating religion is the salafi Islamic which arose in 18th century. Conservative behavior and dressing code is of high importance in Saudi Arabia following the enjoying good and forbidding wrong principle. There are rules both socially and legally to ensure this principle is followed. Alcoholic drinks are prohibited in Saudi Arabia and there are no public theatre and film exhibitions (Al-Rasheed., 2010). Islamic observance dominate our daily life where each and every Muslim all over country has to pray five times a day in the mosques. The weekend starts on Friday to Saturday since Friday is a holy day, unlike other countries where the weekend is Saturday and Sunday. We have only two religious holidays which are Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr according to Salafi doctrine (Assiri et al., 2013). There is a high degree of social stratification and cultural homogeneity passed from generation to generation. There is a link between population diversity and social stratification. There is tribal status group that claimed that purity of descent from their ancestors and could claim possession of the honor that emanates from origin nobility. The Saudi people allow cultural encouragement participation which makes it possible to achieve a common planned direction for growth. This is because culture participation makes significant contributions to the connections of the Saudi people, promoting wellbeing. Citizens are empowered, identity are characterized, and positive change in behavior is valuable, community development and social cohesion are some of the cultural aspects of my origin. There are three basic effects which are as a result of culture participation. They include; Intrinsic effects which make us to seek and want to utilize cultural goods such as local entertainments, foods etc. Instrumental effects such as use of music as therapy for emotional disturbance or engagement in cultural practices that makes one troubled. The culture is used to achieve unrelated aims. And finally functional effects which function to sustain and develop our society such as fostering civic participation, participation in community development projects and retaining of our community identity (Al-Krenawi & Graham., 2000).

There are several advantages which arise from our ethnic practices which include;

Since our ethnicity teaches us how to live with people, there exist a good multicultural relationship in Saudi Arabia. The communities in Saudi are properly managed in order to enjoy such benefits. There exist a balance between expression of diversity and integration to established cultural norms. Since the family is the basic primary unit, every family member has a role to play such as the parents are in-charge of the household, divisions of tasks among family members, etc. This leads to specialist and division of labor among family members which is both applied at home and at workstations. This leads to increased productivity of employees. It is also clearly evident that married people are wealthier than unmarried people. They earn more income, and mostly they invest more of what they earn. They make good workers and are quickly promoted in the workplace (Hofstede & Geert., 1983). There are social and economic empowerment programmes of Saudi people as a family role in Saudi. It has been clearly shown that the family is a major organization where production, reproduction, consumption and accumulation of roles are carried out. This causes economic and social empowerment of the people. This involves family resilience and family capital formation. There is existence of social capital which are basically the resources allowed to be possessed by family associates which depends on social and economic states conditions. Family resilience enables family to withstand from life’s disruptive challenges. There exist marital harmony and satisfaction. The Islamic religion stabilizes and improves marriage. There are teachings on how to ensure peace and harmony exist in the family from the Koran. Since Islam is strictly followed in Saudi, and all family members engage in religious practices, they derive more satisfaction from family relationships. Saudi women are also known to be more disciplined. They have a decent dressing code. They uphold their cultural values thus maintaining their culture (Al-Rasheed., 2010). Saudis people regularly visit their family members and relatives. Women are known to have their routine jobs like visiting each other during daytime hours. For men, socializing occurs in the afternoon after Maghreb which lasts until midnight. They gather in groups of close friends, age mates, work mates etc. and have a meal, share jokes and engage in other activities. This improves their social life and relations. Saudi people have formal greetings which involves conversing for a bit when meeting. They enquire about each other’s health and family conditions but, never about another man’s wife, as this is considered disrespectful. Saudi people are hospitable to strangers through provision of maximum comfort. This contributes positively to the good relations among Saudi citizens and other people. Ethnical teaching also involves training on how to protect the vulnerable members of the society or strangers among the Saudi people. This includes providing childcare support, and provision of care for disabled and ill persons as well as offering protection to orphans. The grandparents in Saudi are responsible of caring for the sick and dying and supporting their orphaned grandchildren. Provision of foster care which results in family dissolution by birth or death of ones parents has led to economic empowerment for the orphans and the sick (Hofstede & Geert., 1983). This has helped remove many victims from such crises. Women are also responsible for carrying home based care models through which they are offered support by the Saudi Arabia government. In Conclusion, regular ethical practices have both benefits to one’s relationship, marital status, professional life, etc. The best practices improve people’s health condition, academic achievements, economic wellbeing, improves one’s self-esteem and compassion with others. The practices can also address many professional social problems. It improves personal correlation with coworkers. It makes one committed to his or her professional duties. Cultural diversity and ones origin are fundamental in the growth of an individual as they provide the basic tenet that make up the personality of a person. From a personal perspective I come from a region that upholds cultural and one is bred through the traditions and norms that govern his or her culture. My origin has instilled fundamental morals that have helped in my coexistence in society with other individuals. My personality is as a direct consequence of my previous background that have helped develop and shape me as an individual. Upholding my origin is critical and should be practiced at all times.

New York Takes Crucial Step Toward Making Congestion Pricing a Reality

The board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted to approve a new $15 toll to drive into Manhattan. The plan still faces challenges from six lawsuits before it can begin in June.

New York City completed a crucial final step on Wednesday in a decades-long effort to become the first American city to roll out a comprehensive congestion pricing program, one that aims to push motorists out of their cars and onto mass transit by charging new tolls to drive into Midtown and Lower Manhattan.

The program could start as early as mid-June after the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the state agency that will install and manage the program, voted 11-to-1 to approve the final tolling rates, which will charge most passenger cars $15 a day to enter at 60th Street and below in Manhattan. The program is expected to reduce traffic and raise $1 billion annually for public transit improvements.

It was a historic moment for New York’s leaders and transportation advocates after decades of failed attempts to advance congestion pricing even as other gridlocked cities around the world, including London, Stockholm and Singapore, proved that similar programs could reduce traffic and pollution.

While other American cities have introduced related concepts by establishing toll roads or closing streets to traffic, the plan in New York is unmatched in ambition and scale.

Congestion pricing is expected to reduce the number of vehicles that enter Lower Manhattan by about 17 percent, according to a November study by an advisory committee reporting to the M.T.A. The report also said that the total number of miles driven in 28 counties across the region would be reduced.

“This was the right thing to do,” Janno Lieber, the authority’s chairman and chief executive, said after the vote. “New York has more traffic than any place in the United States, and now we’re doing something about it.”

Congestion pricing has long been a hard sell in New York, where many people commute by car from the boroughs outside of Manhattan and the suburbs, in part because some of them do not have access to public transit.

New York State legislators finally approved congestion pricing in 2019 after Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo helped push it through. A series of recent breakdowns in the city’s subway system had underscored the need for billions of dollars to update its aging infrastructure.

It has taken another five years to reach the starting line. Before the tolling program can begin, it must be reviewed by the Federal Highway Administration, which is expected to approve it.

Congestion pricing also faces legal challenges from six lawsuits that have been brought by elected officials and residents from across the New York region. Opponents have increasingly mobilized against the program in recent months, citing the cost of the tolls and the potential environmental effects from shifting traffic and pollution to other areas as drivers avoid the tolls.

A court hearing is scheduled for April 3 and 4 on a lawsuit brought by the State of New Jersey, which is seen as the most serious legal challenge. The mayor of Fort Lee, N.J., Mark J. Sokolich, has filed a related lawsuit.

Four more lawsuits have been brought in New York: by Ed Day, the Rockland County executive; by Vito Fossella, the Staten Island borough president, and the United Federation of Teachers; and by two separate groups of city residents.

Amid the litigation, M.T.A. officials have suspended some capital construction projects that were to be paid for by the program, and they said at a committee meeting on Monday that crucial work to modernize subway signals on the A and C lines had been delayed.

Nearly all the toll readers have been installed, and will automatically charge drivers for entering the designated congestion zone at 60th Street or below. There is no toll for leaving the zone or driving around in it. Through traffic on Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive and the West Side Highway will not be tolled.

Under the final tolling structure, which was based on recommendations by the advisory panel, most passenger vehicles will be charged $15 a day from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. The toll will be $24 for small trucks and charter buses, and will rise to $36 for large trucks and tour buses. It will be $7.50 for motorcycles.

Those tolls will be discounted by 75 percent at night, dropping the cost for a passenger vehicle to $3.75.

Fares will go up by $1.25 for taxis and black car services, and by $2.50 for Uber and Lyft. Passengers will be responsible for paying the new fees, and they will be added to every ride that begins, ends or occurs within the congestion zone. There will be no nighttime discounts. (The new fees come on top of an existing congestion surcharge that was imposed on for-hire vehicles in 2019.)

The tolls will mostly be collected using the E-ZPass system. Electronic detection points have been placed at entrances and exits to the tolling zone. Drivers who do not use an E-ZPass will pay significantly higher fees — for instance, $22.50 instead of $15 during peak hours for passenger vehicles.

Emergency vehicles like fire trucks, ambulances and police cars, as well as vehicles carrying people with disabilities, were exempted from the new tolls under the state’s congestion pricing legislation .

As for discounts, low-income drivers who make less than $50,000 annually can apply to receive half off the daytime toll after their first 10 trips in a calendar month. In addition, low-income residents of the congestion zone who make less than $60,000 a year can apply for a state tax credit.

All drivers entering the zone directly from four tolled tunnels — the Lincoln, Holland, Hugh L. Carey and Queens-Midtown — will receive a “crossing credit” that will be applied against the daytime toll. The credit will be $5 round-trip for passenger vehicles, $12 for small trucks and intercity and charter buses, $20 for large trucks and tour buses, and $2.50 for motorcycles. No credits will be offered at night.

How did April Fools' Day start and what are some famous pranks?

Historians aren't pulling your leg when they say no one is quite sure about the origins of April Fools' Day. 

April 1, the annual day of shenanigans, pranks, tricks and hoaxes, falls on Monday this year. While historians are unsure of the exact source of the tradition, they do know the custom goes back centuries, at least back to Renaissance Europe and possibly back to Roman times. Here's a look at what the experts say.

Theories, both real and false, tie April Fools' Day to Roman times 

Some believe April Fools' Day dates back to Hilaria festivals celebrated during classical Roman times. The festival was held on March 25 which, in Roman terms, was called the "eighth of the Calends of April," according to the Library of Congress. 

One theory tying the source of April Fools' Day to Roman times is a hoax. In 1983, an Associated Press reporter reached out to Joseph Boskin, a historian at Boston University, to discuss the origins of April Fools' Day. Boskin spun a tall tale to the reporter, assuming it would be fact-checked and revealed as fake. 

It wasn't. 

According to the story Boskin made up, a group of jesters convinced Emperor Constantine to make one of them king for a day. The appointed jester, named Kugel, declared it would be a day of levity. 

"I got an immediate phone call from an editor there, who was furious, saying that I had ruined the career of a young reporter," Boskin said in a Boston University post. "He said I told a lie. 'A lie?' I asked, 'I was telling an April Fools' Day story.'"

Middle Ages 

Some historians believe France is responsible for the humorous tradition, tying it to a calendar change in 1582, according to the History Channel . That year, France implemented the Gregorian calendar, shifting the start of the New Year from the spring equinox, which usually falls around April 1, to January 1. 

After the change, people who wrongly celebrated the new year in late March and early April were called "April fools."

The first clear reference to April Fools' Day is a 1561 Flemish poem by Eduard De Dene, which tells the story of a servant being sent on "fool's errands" because it's April 1, according to the Library of Congress. 

What are some famous April Fools' Day pranks?

In 1957, the BBC ran a broadcast on the Italian spaghetti harvest  that pretended the pasta was being harvested from trees. 

The BBC also ran an April Fools' report on flying penguins in 2008.

In Los Angeles, airline passengers were greeted with a banner saying "Welcome to Chicago" after landing on April 1, 1992, CBS Sunday Morning previously reported.

Taco Bell in 1996 advertised that it had bought the Liberty Bell and renamed it the "Taco Liberty Bell," according to the company.

As part of a 1997 April Fools' Day joke, Alex Trebek, host of "Jeopardy," swapped places with "Wheel of Fortune" host Pat Sajak, according to jeopardy.com .

On April 1, 2015, streaming giant Netflix shared faux public service announcements to remind viewers to "Binge Responsibly."
