Stress resistance is another incredibly important feature that every good leader should possess. This is because only a stress-resistant leader has sufficient capabilities to overcome any complexity and not let the anxiety and stress prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Besides, such a leader will most likely have a positive influence on the team, as long as leading by example will motivate the team members to attain the same emotional stability. What is so far familiar about stress resistance as an effective leader’s feature is that it can be either innate or attained. However, although some researchers admit that emotional stability is something one is born with, it is not entirely true; many people still put a great effort into self-improvement, changing the attitude to unfortunate situations, and so on. Therefore, being resistant to stress can be mostly attributed to a personality.

An ability to make high-quality decisions most likely determines the chances for an enterprise’s success. In particular, such quality is incredibly fundamental for a company of any size and professional orientation. Additionally, it is one of the top tasks of a good leader to make final decisions. What he or she should do implies brainstorming, discussing various opinions in the group, making forecasts, analyzing all the pros and cons. However, the leader is the one to make a final decision. Thereby, he is in charge of researching the market, discovering all the hidden truths, and analyzing the organization’s potential and capabilities to result in the most effective decision. As it flows logically from the latter, an ability to make sound quality decisions is purely a professional quality. This leads to the conclusion that one has to work hard to become a genuine leader and master the skill of making effective decisions. 

Overall, the leader may possess a multitude of different skills and master them perfectly. However, what has so far become transparent is that any leader, regardless of which team he leads, must possess three essential qualities. These qualities are commitment to the common goal, ability to handle and resist stress, and, finally, an ability to make effective decisions. All of the three qualities are most likely to be acquired over a lifetime. Leadership is a very important aspect in any organization.  A leader is any individual who directs others with an aim of influencing them to follow a set direction.  The leader uses leadership techniques and behaviors to help influence individuals to become successful to achieve the specific goals of the company, group or organization.  Therefore, leadership can thus be defined as the ability to influence or motivate a number of people to achieve a given aim or set of goals.  It involves directing the action and behavior of other people towards accomplishing a given set of objectives (McNamara 12).  There are many leadership theories and principles that are used to help guide individuals to find their inner leader.  Meanwhile, other professionals believe that leadership comes from a specific set of traits that people are either born with or accumulate through childhood and adolescence.  This suggests that individuals cannot be groomed to be leaders; however, a specific training program can be utilized to counter this belief and help guide any individual to take a leadership role in their organization or community.

It is necessary to have a good leader in any organization to achieve success.  There are certain values, skills and competencies that make up a good leader and should be taught through training programs.  A leader should be able to know how to cope with change, while also establishing direction for the group by developing a vision of the future.  As these tasks and responsibilities are completed, the leader must then align people by communicating this vision and inspiring them to overcome hurdles.  These tasks and many others involve several leadership qualities that can exist within everyone, while the ability for them to be used to help benefit the organization may be different.  According to the 4 E’s of Leadership, a leader must be able to envision, enable, empower, energize and ultimately execute the tasks and responsibilities at hand.  First of all, leadership starts with having a vision, then developing a plan to achieve it.  It is based both on data assessment and intuition, hope and fear.  It is a noble challenge.  A vision of the future is the key to getting started as a leader.  Leaders must then decide what methods or tools will be used to enable the objectives, and to encourage the right kind of action.  Effective empowerment provides the space to get the task completed, the space to innovate, and the feedback mechanism to both improve results and to motivate the organization.  The more energy the team generates, the more energy the leader has – in a virtuous circle of reinforcement.  Finally, outstanding execution and follow through applies at every stage of the leadership process.

While these characteristics of leaders are important, there is another set of theories that describes a set of traits that must be utilized in order for the leader to be successful.  These trait theorists offer such characteristics as charisma, enthusiasm, courage, optimism, imaginative, celebrate the organization’s mission or purpose, supply the means to achieve and maintain a global view.  One quality of an effective leader is honesty towards his or her team members as well as to his or her work.  Having good communication skills is also another effective leadership quality.  Interpersonal communication is very important so that the information is expressed to the employees or group members of the organization in the clearest and most-efficient manner possible.  This also suggests that the leader must be a good listener.  Any good leader must be a fast learner and have the ability to spot and nurture potential talent and to take necessary risks.  Furthermore, the leader needs to be enthusiastic in relation to their role, work and cause (Vroom & Yetton 130).  This quality does not only escalate dedication and passion from the team members but also acts as a source of motivation and inspiration.  Good leaders tolerate ambiguity as well as harsh conditions and are always composed, calm and steadfast to achieving the main goals.  They show commitment in the maintenance of good work standards and excellence.  Other qualities of effective leadership include good decision making skills, creativity, confidence, humility and appreciation for what others have done (Vroom & Yetton 132).  Each of these qualities is very special toward the leader’s ability to help motivate and guide the people to help achieve the goals of the organization.

To help implement these traits and characteristics into individuals, a training program must be designed to help achieve the goal of grooming young men and women to become leaders of an organization or group.  Utilizing the information from the leadership development model, each stage of leadership development has someone or something above and below that will help provide structure for leadership.  The training program that is being suggested will help to create a sturdy foundation of traits and characteristics, as well as leadership mentors that can help guide the individual through the development stages.  To begin, an individual must have leadership abilities, which they gain from training, leadership teams, coaches and mentors.  This training program would be designed to help individuals learn specific traits, such as honesty and effective interpersonal communication among other.  Through verbal and written exercises within a group, an individual will gain more courage and higher self-esteem regarding their own leadership and communication abilities throughout the training.

The objectives of this training program are to clearly define leadership, provide a clear understanding of the importance of leadership within every organization, and describe the personality traits and the 4 E’s of leadership that can be developed to help individuals become better leaders. There are three main types of leadership styles that will be focused within the training.  These include Authoritarian, Participative and Free Reign.  Authoritarian or Autocratic leadership styles are when leaders tell their employees what they want done and how they want it accomplished, without getting the advice of their followers.  This is best used when all the information is available to the leader to solve the problem, the time frame for completion is short, and the employees are well motivated.  Participative leadership involves the leader including one or more employees in the decision making process to determine what to do and how to do it.  The leader still maintains the final decision-making authority.  This style is best used when part of the information is available and employees have other parts.  It is important to note that a leader is not expected to know everything, which is why it is important to employ knowledgeable and skillful employees to help in decision-making.  Finally, Free Reign leadership styles are where the leader allows the employees to make the decisions.  The leader is still responsible for the decisions that are made, but the style is used when employees are able to analyze the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do it.  The leader must set priorities and delegate certain tasks, and must understand that this leadership style is not used to place blame onto others.  These leadership styles will be discussed and an exercise will be used throughout training to help individuals determine what traits they have and what their leadership style would likely be based on that information.

In association with describing and teaching personality traits and leadership styles, it is important for individuals to be aware of the many different leadership styles that can be used in any given situation.  This concept of choosing skills and leadership styles based on the situation is commonly referred to as situational leadership because individuals must understand what traits and skills to use that will help advance the success of the organization in any given situation.  For example, an already stressed group of co-workers would not respond well to an authoritarian or in-your-face style of leadership.  Therefore, the leader must be aware of his or her leadership style and how best to use such skills depending on the situation.  The training program will provide each trainee with a set of situations based on real-world examples.  Within a group, the trainees can discuss what skills and leadership styles would be better suited to solve the problems or motivate individuals than others.  This active discussion will help people learn, and will be overseen by the trainers in order to ensure positive reinforcement and effective learning.  Just as many leaders have specific traits and diverse characteristics, so too do the many challenges that face leaders in any given environment.  These challenges can include globalization and diversity, aging employees, contract and cheap labor, confronting unethical behavior and increased work-life conflicts.  A clear discussion and educational training for these specific challenges can be used in accordance with the leadership style training exercises in order to discuss situational leadership.  Every organization will face these problems and it requires an effective leader to help see the organization through difficult times.

As it has clearly been proven, leadership involves many particular leadership styles and characteristics that are important for goal achievement within the organization.  Leadership training is a crucial factor in creating leaders for the future in any organization, especially within those where current leaders may be aging or retiring.  There is not one specific way to train leaders, but the information providing herein suggests that leaders should become aware of their current traits and the traits of leaders.  This will help in the development stages and a mentoring or coaching option for the training will also help guide young leaders on the right path.  A successful organization would utilize this leadership training program because of the educational and real-world impact the training could have for any individual that is looking to become a leader.

Content Building Blocks for a Leadership Story Essay

Leadership Story Essays are narrative essays, which means they are invitations for you to tell a story. Therefore, the content building blocks we provide below will help you to craft your story.

The first principle they teach you in a creative writing course is that a good story has a beginning, middle, and end.

The beginning of your story should include a Hook and a Lead .

A Hook is what it sounds like: an opening that engages your reader and builds interest in hearing your story. The best hooks are unexpected and build anticipation. You’ll see an example of a hook in the sample essay.

The next building block is the Lead . A story lead summarizes what the story is about and gives your reader a sense of why you decided to tell this story.

You have only a few seconds to capture your reader’s attention, so you want to get to the lead of the story as quickly as possible. The “lead” of your story gets your reader on board and silences that internal voice asking, “What’s this story about? And is it going to answer the essay question asked?”.

Once the reader is hooked, you are ready to tell your story. The content building blocks for the middle, or body of the story, should follow the STAR Framework. STAR is an acronym that stands for — Situation – Task – Action – Result .

You begin by providing the Situation of the story, which orients the reader to the setting and introduces the conflict or complication.

Next, since you are writing a story about a time you took the lead, you want your reader to know what Task you and your team needed to accomplish. Think of the Task as your role in the story and your specific goals or objectives as a leader in this particular situation.

From there, it’s time to share the Action , or what you did to resolve the conflict, fulfill your role, and achieve your objectives or goals. It’s important to remember that everything leading up to the Action (Situation and Task) is exposition. A good storyteller aims to get through that set-up as quickly as possible, so action becomes the story’s focal point. Action is what admission committees are interested in — not exposition. Therefore, on balance, “action” should take up about 75% of the word count of the leadership stories you tell.

When it comes to action, the more specific you can be, the better. Generic action statements, such as “I assembled the team, got them focused, and finished the project,” aren’t sufficient. Tell the reader about the obstacles you faced as a leader and the creative, clever, and unexpected ways you overcame them.

Outlining the story’s action is a crucial moment in testing the quality of your leadership story. If there’s not enough leadership action, then the story probably won’t work, and you should think of another story to tell.

Your story ends when you share the Results , or the impact of your actions, and the final resolution of the complication. Evidence of results is almost as critical as action when you’re trying to assess the quality of your story – a positive outcome makes the story that much more powerful.

If your story doesn’t “pay off,” it may not fly. That’s not the same thing as saying that you have to have achieved what you set out to. The pay-off might be the lessons you learned or how you grew from the experience.

Applying the STAR Framework

Let’s take a look at the STAR framework created by an MBA candidate. He outlined a story about leading a marketing field study project in college.

For our example applicant, the Situation was that during his senior year in college, he assembled a team of marketing and industrial design students to co-design a pair of sneakers for Nike.

As the team’s leader, his Task was to assemble the team and get them to work cooperatively to design a pair of sneakers. He decided to focus the Action of the story on the things he did to get his teammates to bond and work together to achieve their goals.

The Result of the project was two-fold: first, the team delivered the marketing plans and sneaker design for a skateboard shoe; second, the author learned how to lead a diverse group of people.

Voila. The story’s setting, the applicant’s goal, what he did, how things turned out, and some notes about what he learned from the experience are outlined. He’s captured the elements of a promising Leadership Story Essay.

While your STAR outline is likely to include more details than our example, you can see how the STAR outline can help you tell a concise story with a beginning, middle, and end. A STAR outline also enables you to see pretty quickly if your outline has the makings of a successful leadership essay.

Below you can read an excerpt from the example essay that resulted by assembling these content building blocks. Review the sample essay carefully, and then you will be ready to get to work writing your Leadership Story Essay.

Leadership Story Essay Sample

Like most kids in my neighborhood, I owned a skateboard. Honestly, I never quite got the hang of it. Though I will never shred the pavement or fly high above a half-pipe, I did get to do something most skateboarders will never do: in college, I led a six-person team that designed a skateboard shoe for Nike.

In my senior year, I convinced my thesis adviser at the University of Oregon that instead of writing a research report describing how Nike designs and develops athletic shoes, I wanted to “Just do it!” With his blessing, I convinced the Nike Design Group to sponsor a team of three marketing students, including me, and three industrial design students to co-design a sneaker for them.

As the project leader, my role was to assemble the team and lead them in designing a pair of skateboarding sneakers. Recruiting teammates was relatively easy; marketing and design students jumped at the chance to work on a project for Nike. The real challenge, once I had my team selected, was to get the marketing students and ID students to work together — we had such different working styles and perspectives.

For our project kick-off meeting, I invited my teammates to my apartment to eat pizza and watch Dogtown and the Z Boys, a classic skateboarding movie. Watching the film inspired us and broke the ice. In our next meeting, I came up with the idea of a teach-in. We taught them about our market research process, and they taught us about their design process. After that, we sketched out a method for working together…

…We flew to Beaverton to present our skateboard sneaker to the head of Design. A year later, Nike released its first skateboard shoe. Though it was different from our model, our team’s work had clearly influenced the design and marketing of a new product for the legendary sneaker company.

For me, the ultimate reward wasn’t designing the sneaker; it was designing and leading the team. We started from such different perspectives and points of view and ended up gelling as a team.

The experience taught me how beneficial those differences are when you are creating something new. This lesson has been instrumental in my success in the software product strategy role I started after college.

Final Thoughts

Business schools understand that your best leadership experiences are still ahead of you. What they want to see is a “habit” of leadership and some good examples of how you’ve led on a smaller scale. Leading in ordinary situations but doing it “extraordinarily well” is what admissions committees are looking for in your Leadership Story Essay. Done well, your Leadership Story Essay will provide evidence of potential and the promise of great things to come.

The following is an example of a successful Executive MBA essay for the MIT Sloan Executive MBA Program. Applicants to Executive MBA programs need to demonstrate significant leadership, impact, potential, and the legitimate need for the degree to be accepted, and this essay shows all of those qualities.

Statement of purpose (one page)

Prompt: The MIT Executive MBA Students and Community are: Open, Collaborative and Inventive. Please tell us why you are pursuing the MIT Executive MBA, and what you will contribute to your classmates and the community at MIT. Include examples of success working with organizations, groups, and individuals. For those reapplying, please highlight developments since your last submission.

As a founder, board director, and executive officer of a growth-stage technology company, I bring a unique set of experiences and a need for an innovative, transformative education that I can apply to my business immediately.

As an executive with both immediate challenges and wide organizational influence, I am particularly drawn to the action learning philosophy of the Sloan program. I am eager to transform my own mind and create immediate positive impact across my organization. I am inspired by the experiences of current students who implement their new learnings when they return to the office on Mondays. I am eager to do exactly that. My business is significantly more complex today than it was in the beginning when we provided a simple set of tools to small teams. Today, we are a multinational organization that provides tools and training to large enterprises seeking to implement Lean transformations of sophisticated processes in IT operations and multiple other industries. Throughout this journey, I have constantly challenged myself and my organization to learn, grow, and change. I seek to participate in this program as another step in my personal commitment to learning and adapting to the needs of the future. Now is the moment of maximum impact, whereby my organization and customers will be most receptive to, and benefit the most from, lessons and experiments that I intend to bring back and implement.

As a shareholder that has negotiated a significant amount of angel and institutional investment, I am keenly aware that my investors seek a positive return on their investment. I seek to prepare not only for the immediate needs of growth and complexity, but also for the mid-to-long term opportunities that may accompany that growth, such as a change of control, a liquidity event, or an opportunity to integrate my teams into a larger vision.

As a community leader, I seek to bring what I learn from the program back home and share it widely. I aim to broaden my understanding of business practices and theory beyond my focused experience in tech so that I may maximize the value of what I pass along to the aspiring entrepreneurs, technologists, and leaders in my community who, with ever increasing frequency, honor me by seeking my guidance and assistance.

A couple of strong points to this essay:

1. No nonsense approach

The writer immediately gets to the point of explaining why an EMBA is a necessary next step for their career. In the very first sentence there is an acknowledgement of all the writer has accomplished, but the clear recognition that further education is necessary to attain their goals.

2. Complete lack of verbosity

It is obvious the writer has had a very successful career thus far, but that is not what comes across. Instead you understand that the writer recognizes the constant need for learning and adapting to the ever-changing business environment.

3. Give and take

The writer discusses taking the learning from MIT and applying it to oneself, but also bringing key learnings back to the writer’s community. The writer also acknowledges that having classmates critiquing his business will be extremely beneficial to him, but also by opening up his operations to his classmates, they can learn a lot as well. This shows a generous spirit, which is the type of characteristic an admissions committee would be looking for in terms of representing the school after graduation.

Writing an Outstanding Statement of Purpose

The statement of purpose is one of the most important elements of your application. This article offers a framework for thinking about your statement that should help you write a memorable and effective one.

Your statement of purpose is your only opportunity to tell application reviewers your story in your own words. Knowing your story makes your application much more memorable and, as a result, helps you stand out from the larger application pool. Moreover, it is your best opportunity to tell the application reviewers why you are a good fit for their program. They are planning to invest significant resources in the graduate students that they admit. Knowing that you are applying to their programs for compelling reasons is a central motivation for every decision to accept.

Focus on articulating three kinds of fit:

  • The fit between you and your chosen field (i.e., why you want to get a PhD in your chosen field and are likely to excel in it).
  • The fit between you and the program to which you are applying (i.e., why this particular program will be the best place for you to go).
  • The fit between the program and your plans after graduate school (i.e., why this particular program will be the best launching pad for your research and teaching career).

Think of the statement of purpose as a narrative, with you as the protagonist. Part of that narrative is your story of who you are, why you want to get a PhD in your chosen field, and the experiences that led to and deepened your desire for getting a PhD. The other part of the narrative describes why going to the program to which you are applying will result in your becoming a thriving scholar in your chosen field.

To the end of telling that narrative,  many statements of purpose  follow a similar, four-part structure.

  • Introduce yourself and your motivations. Articulate your fascination with the questions that bring you to your field of study and root that fascination in an experience or set of experiences. You are the protagonist of this narrative. You need to show your readers what motivates you on this journey.
  • Develop your backstory. Here you should summarize your previous academic, work, and volunteer experiences. For PhD programs, be sure to highlight any research experiences you have. This section should not read like a laundry list of the items already on your resume. Pick the most important experiences and highlight them.
  • Connect your backstory to your next chapter. Elaborate upon your experiences to show why they are relevant to graduate school. If you are highlighting your accomplishments as an undergraduate, focus on why they have put you in a position to thrive in graduate school. If you have taken time off for work or a post-baccalaureate course of study, explain how those experiences have prepared you for graduate school, particularly if you are changing fields.
  • Preview your next chapter. Describe what, if admitted, you plan to study. Be specific both about the questions you would like to research and why the program is a good fit for that. Carefully study the current research of the faculty and be sure to highlight the research interests of three of them in your statement.

Throughout this narrative, be as specific as possible about your experiences and intentions. Use a formal, but conversational tone. Do not try to impress with technical jargon or disciplinary vocabulary. Be selective in your choices of what to highlight. You will not have enough space to follow a “more is better” strategy when choosing experiences and interests to emphasize. If you have a poor grade or two on your transcript, feel empowered to explain the reasons behind that grade if it reinforces your overall narrative as a researcher. For example, particularly intense volunteering may have distracted you from your coursework while also sparking the research interest that has led you to apply to grad school. If the explanation for the grade is personal, such as an illness or a death in the family, try to address it in an addendum to your application.

Be sure to proofread multiple times and have multiple people review your statement. Ask roommates, friends, or coworkers to read for clarity and grammar. Ask one of your undergraduate mentors to give you feedback on how you are describing the three kinds of fit discussed above. Above all, be true to who you are, what you have done, and what you want to do. If you get accepted on the basis of an inauthentic statement, you will likely find yourself in a graduate program that is a poor fit for you and will stifle your growth as a scholar. You want to join a program in which you will thrive. A compelling, authentic statement of purpose will help you toward that goal.

I would like to gain confidence as a result of Leadership Fellows. I sometimes hesitate in group settings to speak up or share my opinion, and I would like to be better at that. I feel I have what it takes to become a good leader, but I need to work on growing my confidence to step out of my comfort zone more, to speak up more, and to be okay if the group does not like my idea. I think if I grew my confidence I would become more involved on campus and take risks for opportunities that I have not always gone for because I don't think I'll get them. If I can improve my confidence I can become a more engaged and effective leader on campus.

Three strengths I possess are adaptability, dependability, and honesty. Adaptability– I am able to do well in a variety of settings and groups, and I can always find a way to find my role and to support the group. I also manage obstacles well and I can adjust when something unexpected occurs or changes. I try really hard to be dependable and consistent. When I say I am going to do something, I follow through and I actively work to meet deadlines for everything. I do really well with maintaining my commitments and I pride myself in being someone people can turn to when they need to make sure something gets done. And honesty, I think honest connects to dependability, but I always try to be honest with everyone. If I am asked what I think, I won't lie and I value transparency when working with others as well.

The leadership program will influence my career development significantly. The course will enable me to understand and appreciate my career no matter the challenges. I will learn the means that a leader should use to treat employees and the community. I will learn motivational strategies that I can use to motivate employees in an organization. Moreover, the leadership skills that I will acquire from the program will be helpful in enlightening me of the need to put myself in the shoes of an employee to better understand their needs. Employees undergo various stressful situation be it strict rules, long working hours, and minimal pay. Leaders are required to make sound decisions for their businesses; this is a challenge because one has to be creative enough to formulate and announce a decision that will be of help to the organization.
