'Hridayam' movie review: Youthful charm, romance make it a memorable watch
Itâs a world filled with romance and lovers and cupids. College life is easily one of the best phases in our life. Those beautiful moments are what perhaps makes the later part of our life so meaningful. Hridayam gives that high. If Vineeth Sreenivasan scripts it with his heart, Pranav Mohanlal lends an undeniable charm to it, making Hridayam a memorable watch.
Hridayam travels through the life of Arun Neelakandan who joins an Engineering college in Chennai. Itâs love at first sight for Arun when he sees Darshana the day he joins the college. Soon after it felt like we were back to our favourite college campus. The first half is filled with a colourful blend of romance and friendship and is set between 2006-2010.
Arunâs role as a student, lover, friend, husband, and father are shown in two chapters. First is his appearance as a college student, where he bravely makes an appearance the next day, despite being trashed by seniors. His friends are a boon to him. Antony Thadikaran, Selva, Darshana, Kali, Pratheek, and Maya are important links in his college life. Then comes the big question of what next after Engineering? That brings him to Nithya. Arunâs second chapter begins from there. His romance with Nithya.
Pranav is still an enigma to me: Interview with Vineeth Sreenivasan
I have so much hope in Hridayam: Interview with Ann Saleem
Vineeth had mentioned in an interview that Pranavâs smile had a special charm and that he wanted to make proper use of that charm in Hridayam. Literally, that is Hridayam. One canât even visualise any other actor in place of Arun Neelakandan. Pranav has come a long way since his first film. His charm is undeniable. And thatâs exactly what makes us warm up to Arun Neelakandan. Darshana is safe in the hands of Darshana who goes through a multitude of emotions with ease. Kalyani was effective as Nithya and her chemistry with Pranav is one of the high points of the film.
Ashwath Lal who made his debut in Pathinettam Padi appears as Antony Thadikaran and he has done a commendable job. The other actors are Annu Antony, Aju Varghese, Vijayaraghavan, Johnny Antony, Ann Saleem, Megha Thomas, Jojo Thomas, Siva Hariharan, and Ajith Thomas.
Special mention to cinematographer Vishwajith, who coincidentally was the cameraman of Nivin Paulyâs short film in Oru Vadakkan Selfie. Hisham Abdul Wahab is the fourth angle in Hridayam after Pranav, Vineeth, and Vishwajith. His lilting songs are the heart and soul of the film. There are 15 songs, and all have been seamlessly blended into the narrative. Ranjan Abrahamâs editing is so impressive.
There is romance, friendship, heartbreak, pathos, and life in Hridayam. Thatâs Hridayam in very simple terms. A beautiful gift during these trying times. That the makers and producers decided to go ahead with the release despite pandemic constraints speaks about their confidence in the film.

Hridayam Movie Review:Â Vineeth Sreenivasan delivers two feel-good films for the price of one
Rating: ( 4 / 5).
I had two concerns before going into Hridayam . Its length and the 15 songs in it. Having seen the film, I can say that I can't imagine it without that length and those songs. Vineeth Sreenivasan has structured Hridayam in a way that makes it seem like you're watching two feel-good films for the price of one. It's like the Side A and Side B of an album. And the songs don't exist just for the sake of it. They act as markers for pivotal events in protagonist Arun Neelakandan's (Pranav Mohanlal) life. In fact, the Hridayam experience already began the day they launched the album. It's the appetizer before the buffet. If you're already familiar with the album, you'll like them even more once you see their placement in the film. There were six songs that I wasn't floored by when I first heard them, but I began to appreciate them after getting a sense of the context. I'm listening to the soundtrack as I write this review because I want to remember the details.
Director: Vineeth Sreenivasan Cast: Pranav Mohanlal, Darshana Rajendran, Kalyani Priyadarshan
Hridayam feels like a novel that charts a character's growth from one specific part of his life to another. Vineeth Sreenivasan is not going for the typical conflict-resolution format. He has written the film like a collection of conflict-resolution episodes, with the pre-interval portions covering Arun's college life and the other half exploring his post-college experiences. (I liked how Vineeth uses the film's title in place of 'Interval'.) Although it employs the familiar coming-of-age tropes, Vineeth makes them seem fresh again. Arun is a different person to different people. He could be the coolest guy you looked up to in college or the guy who beat you up. I connected to Hridayam a lot because Arun commences college in the same year I did (2006) and in the same place (Chennai). So, I was hooked right from that opening scene showing Pranav boarding a train where he meets his future buddies for the first time. It's that time before smartphones became a fashion -- when your phones looked more like a video game console. It's that time when you interacted with non-Malayalis for the first time. It's that time when seniors tell you that the grill safeguarding your hostel corridor is useless because they will catch you and rag you no matter what. Arun goes through it all. We have all had those moments in our late 20s or early 30s where we remember the people we met during our college life (batchmates to professors to canteen guys to wardens), and we wonder what happened to those who -- good or bad -- shaped our formative years. Sometimes you learn that the person you hated the most back then has now turned into someone with whom you'd like to hang out. When you get to know someone close, you learn that they are not the raging jerk you assumed they were. Some of them don't change and get worse as they grow older. When we first meet Arun, he is a charming guy with the kind of swag you wish you had in the first year of college. But meeting Darshana (Darshana Rajendran) changes him into someone unruly and brutish. He becomes prone to mistakes and temptations, just like most of us did back then. You see, it's this therapeutic quality of Hridayam that I loved the most. It makes you feel less embarrassed about the awkward, foolish things you did in the past. It's a film that doesn't believe in dwelling on past mistakes. It's like a friend that pats you on the back and says, "It's fine, dude. Look at these characters. They have moved on. Nobody cares anymore about what happened a decade ago. You should move on too," and you think to yourself that, yes, it's as simple as that. It's not the end of the world. This realisation must've dawned on Arun too. He finds a way to push himself, again and again, to put everything behind and grow into a responsible young adult. He ends up right where we want him to end up. In most films involving a love story, it's the guys who usually have difficulty moving on. This time, it's a girl. But even she will eventually muster the strength to begin the next phase of her life. Better late than never, right? Oh, I forgot to add one more initial concern -- of Pranav Mohanlal fitting into a film of this nature. I was curious to see how a filmmaker like Vineeth Sreenivasan would handle him. The Darshana song had already given us a faint glimmer of hope. But how would he do in the entire film? I'm happy to report that Pranav delivers in spades. Pranav gets the transformation -- from flawed and rebellious to mature and responsible -- right. He also excels in those little moments where we meet minor characters who make a strong impact regardless of their screentime. How many films do that? Hridayam's most emotional and inspiring segment involves Arun's friendship with a Tamil batchmate named Selva. It acts as its own little movie, and you get the sense that Vineeth is pulling off, in a small way, his dream of making a Tamil-language feature. Or perhaps he is warming up before making a big one. Another poignant moment has Arun conversing with a Tamil-speaking stranger at a tea stall. The man, who seems to have fallen on hard times, tells him that he used to be a big movie producer. In that instant, you wish that things got better for him too. You'll get your answer in the film's third act. Nobody does feel good like Vineeth Sreenivasan. I also loved the casting of Kalyani Priyadarshan as Nithya, the girl Arun will eventually marry. Hridayam is undoubtedly Kalyani's finest hour. Anyone can tell that Nithya is so apt for Arun. She brings that much-needed level of warmth, mischief, and humour in his life that we didn't notice in his interactions with Darshana. He is not reluctant to be under her control. It's a match made in heaven. And Darshana Rajendran is aptly cast as the girl who thinks a lot before making serious life decisions. She is not sure in the way that Arun or Nithya is. The involvement of these three actors proves once again that Vineeth has a great eye (and ear) for talent. But Pranav, Kalyani and Darshana are not the only inspired casting choices in Hridayam . The guy who plays Arun's best friend -- I don't know his name -- is excellent too. Vineeth gives him a fair share of comical and emotional moments that make him endearing. I can tell that he has a great future ahead of him. Also terrific are all the actors cast as Arun's batchmates. (One of the actors, Arun Kurian of Anandam -fame, is already familiar to us.) And Vineeth brings his trademark sense of humour in certain situations that you first expect to have a serious outcome. And when you have the incredibly hilarious Johny Antony playing Nithya's father, you know from where she got her sense of humour. Speaking of supportive parents, Vijayaraghavan plays Arun's. A railway station conversation scene brought back memories of talking to my father at the Thalassery railway station moments before I boarded a train headed for Chennai's Egmore station. Â As a coming-of-age drama, Hridayam is to Vineeth Sreenivasan what Premam was to Alphonse Puthren. (If given a choice, I would easily pick Hridayam over Premam .) It's one of those films I wanted to hug once the end credits started rolling. I also wanted to hug Vineeth for making a film with so many heartwarming moments and then daring to release it at a time when everyone is constantly troubled by concerns over a raging pandemic and the restrictions imposed. I badly needed this film. Thank you, Vineeth Sreenivasan and friends.

*No Spoilers Ahead*
What's Yay:
The cast and performances (especially Pranav Mohanlal)
Script & Direction
Music score and song placements
Visuals and technical aspects
What's Nay:
Arun Neelakandan (Pranav Mohanlal) joins KC Tech, a popular engineering college in Chennai for his graduation. Hridayam focuses on how the various incidents that happened in those four years shaped his personality and influence his journey ahead.
Vineeth Sreenivasan, the multi-faceted talent has delivered one of his finest works as a filmmaker, with Hridayam . This Pranav Mohanlal starrer is a well-made coming-of-age drama, that most of the audiences will relate with at some point. Writer-director Vineeth has crafted the transitions of its central character Arun's life organically, thus bringing a plethora of nostalgia and emotions to the audience.
The biggest plus point of Hridayam is the way it has developed its lead characters while making use of the strengths of the actors who played them. The excellent casting of the film deserves a special round of applause. Another major factor that makes the film absolutely enjoyable is the brilliant placement of its songs.
However, Hridayam is not a flawless film. The film takes its own sweet time developing the central character Arun and his surroundings in the highly impactful first half. However, things seem a bit rushed in the second half. For instance, Arun's relationship with Darshana (Darshana Rajendran) is explored well, while his relationship with Nithya (Kalyani Priyadarshan) blooms in a hurry and suddenly shifts to its next phase. Also, there are certain characters that are left unexplored. The long running time of Hridayam might be an issue for the audiences, who prefer a crisp watch.
Performances
Pranav Mohanlal - the actor has finally arrived with Hridayam . This Vineeth Sreenivasan directorial has totally reinvented the star kid's potential. Pranav's immense growth as an actor is visible in his portrayal of Arun Neelakandan's transitions from a boy to a man. The young actor simply shines in romantic and emotional sequences. His dialogue delivery and voice modulation are also top-notch. Pranav Mohanlal is definitely here to stay.
Darshana Rajendran, who plays Darshana, once again proves her mettle as a performance with the layered character. Kalyani Priyadarshan, on the other hand, steals the show with her charming screen presence and humour sense. Both the actresses, especially Kalyani shares an amazing onscreen chemistry Pranav Mohanlal. The rest of the star cast, including Aju Varghese, Aswath Lal, Vijayaraghavan, Johny Antony, Arun Kurian, Annu Antony, Megha Thomas, Kalesh, and others have played the respective roles to near perfection.
Technical Aspects
Vishwajith Odukkathil makes a great debut as an independent cinematographer with Hridayam . The excellent visualisation of the film brings the unseen face of Chennai city to the big screens in its full glory. Ranjan Abraham has done a great job with the editing. The production design team also deserves a special mention.
But the heart and soul of Hridayam is Hesham Abdul Wahab's fantastic music score. The real essence of this Vineeth Sreenivasan directorial clearly lies in those 15 songs, that literally hold the narrative together. Hesham is definitely going to make it big.
Hridayam is a well-made coming-of-age musical drama that brings a plethora of emotions and nostalgia to its viewers. This film has its heart in the right place, thanks to its exceptional making, brilliant performances, and fantastic music score.

HRIDAYAM MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE
College days are always special, and the friends and memories you make in this period often remain in your life forever. With loads of such sweet memories of college life comes Vineeth Srinivasan's Hridayam. Starring Pranav Mohanlal, Kalyani Priyadarshan and Darshana Rajendran in leading roles, the movie is a coming-of-age drama.
Hridayam follows Pranav Mohanlal's Arun from the moment he joins KCG College of Technology in Chennai in his 30s. The 171-minute movie is from Arun's perspective as he lives through key college moments including ragging from seniors, clearing arrears, and falling in love. The journey that he is on to discover satisfaction and passion in life forms the crux of the film.
Like its name, Hridayam had a lot of heart in it and it's not surprising considering how Sreenivasan sought inspiration from his own college experience and that of his friends. It is this quality that makes the film such a treat. With a nostalgic vibe, the film will transport you to your college days, leaving you with a desire to revisit your alma mater and your college mates.
A lot of credits for this goes to Viswajith Odukkathil's cinematography that captures each moment from the perspective of the person experiencing them.
Hesham Abdul Wahab's music just accentuates the movie's wistful and feel-good quality. With soul-soothing numbers like Bas Kar Ji and Nagini, the movie's soundtrack is a feast to listen to. However, at some point, there are just too many songs in the movie, which could potentially affect the viewing experience.
Technical aspects aside, what holds a relatively long movie like Hridayam are the central characters. Sreenivasan has done a splendid job in the characterisation of Arun, Darshana, Arun's friends, and Nithya. The respective actors then do their bit to make each character memorable.
In Hridayam, Vineeth Srinivasan does what he is best at: recreating the early 2000s through a coming-of-age story. However, the movie could have saved precious minutes by chopping down on certain unimportant songs and sequences that simply felt like a drag.
Nevertheless, Hridayam is a refreshing movie, one that will make you nostalgic for your college days and maybe even make you fall in love with Chennai. And in the process pull you into its world and away from reality throughout its runtime.

‘Hridayam’ review – A magical romance served with soul-stirring music
- Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar
It was only recently that I came across the spiritual concept of âtwin flamesâ â a philosophical framework within which two individuals that are in love see themselves intertwined in a deep soul connection. The lovers in this construct display instant chemistry, constant dysfunction, and a strong tendency to complete each other. While the concept emerges primarily from a highly romanticized idea of life, the theory is something that our cinema and literature heavily employ without giving it a definitive label. I reminisced about Jayakrishnan and Clara’s complex love in Thoovanathumbikal . Dev and Mayaâs tumultuous affair in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was not very different. The latest entrant to the list is Vineeth Sreenivasanâs Malayalam romance, Hridayam . The film chronicles the life of Arun (Pranav Mohanlal) which is anchored by the deep connection he has with Darshana (Darshana Rajendran).
Hridayam briefly took me back to the 2015 breakthrough Malayalam hit Premam. Both character-driven and set significantly on campus, the coming-of-age template is not alien to Malayalam cinema. Vineethâs film, however, differs alarmingly in character design. His leading man, for starters, does not carry his wit on his sleeves. Known by what must be the most generic name for a Malayali man, Arun would feel just like another campus lad who does not have brawny looks or identifiable skills to turn heads. He falls for Darshana the moment he spots her singing ‘Kannalane’ in the tony Chennai campus’s amphitheater. Arun (unlike Premam âs George) does not indulge in misadventures or take the long route. In a matter of days, he proposes love to her. At this point springs the now-viral âDarshanaâ number and Vineeth Sreenivasanâs film makes us smile from ear to ear.
Alas, itâs a love story and there ought to be a conflict. Luckily for us, the one that Hridayam puts forth is nothing unrealistic. A minor misunderstanding causes a rift between the duo and before we know it, hormones take charge, and the passion withers away. From this point, the film becomes an accurate showcase of life on engineering campuses â although seen only through Arunâs eyes. Vineeth sketches no major breakdowns for his leading man who soon joins an enterprising classmate Selva to pull himself up from a deep trough of backlogs. A mind-numbing twist surfaces, marking an end to the filmâs eventful campus chapter.
Darshana, by this hour, has transformed into a catalyst who only appears on and off. We do not know what to make out of the residual chemistry she shares with Arun. Their equation is seldom toxic but is perennially damaging to each otherâs psyche â with coincidences and individual egos keeping them away from getting back together – staying true to the characteristics of the twin flames theory.
After a point, Hridayam appeals to us to stop pining for the lovers who are figuring things out themselves. Atypical of Indiaâs uninspired engineers, we see how things transform once their mundane work-life saturate them. Arun turns a wedding photographer, and Darshana is now a Youtuber. Soon, he finds a lovely match for himself in Nithya (Kalyani Priyadarshan). The young girl is representative of another relationship construct called ‘soulmates’ – a connection that is believed to be a lot less exhausting, in comparison to the destructive nature of ‘twin flames’.
Vineeth Sreenivasanâs film soon begins to flipflop awkwardly between territories of a love triangle and a domestic drama. In this chapter, Nithya gets more autonomy in the narrative even though the story is still fully Arunâs. We get a glimpse of the person she is. Darshana, on the contrary, remains a mystery throughout. The best we get of her is the way she dresses up and feeble mentions of her venture. In short, Nithya is all flesh and blood. She is attainable and approachable. Darshana is an enigma and an idea of perfection that feels too good to be true. If magic is what drives Arunâs love for Darshana, it is a sense of calm â possibly emerging from ticking body clocks â that fuels what he has for Nithya. For instance, Darshana is constantly shot in extreme close-ups and slow-motion shots, giving her an ethereal aura. Their meet-cutes are lifted straight from classic romantic romps. As for Nithya, he travels with her in second-class train compartments, cooks her porridge, and hunts for a bottle of Volini â these are things we wouldnât picture him doing with Darshana.
If my memory serves me right, Vineethâs films do not comment much outside the immediate worlds of his leads. The writer-director chooses to examine the mindscape of his leading man in Hridayam while also giving the women some say in the story. The film is about Arunâs coming-of-age, agreed, but it also involves full-fledged personal journeys for Darshana and Nithya â which is an area that differentiates it from Premam . To Vineethâs credit, he makes up for the absence of excess meta moments with a screenplay filled with heart-wrenching lines. At two points in the film, Darshana asks Arun, âWould we have been together today if we were to bury the hatchet in the first year?â At both times, we get heartfelt reactions from Arun. Speaking of meta moments, there are a bunch of them thrown between the filmâs three-hour-long runtime. I chuckled hard when Arun asked Nithya, âPorunno ente koode?â (which translates to âWould you like to come with me?â ) – a cherished line from their parentsâ (Mohanlal and Priyadarshan) iconic film, Thenmavin Kombathu .
Music is a mainstay in Hridayam . So much so that it is impossible to imagine the film sans Hesham Abdul Wahabâs mesmerizing score that weaves gorgeously into the story. While itâs impossible to pick a favorite, the film reaches its crescendo towards the interval point where two songs (âMinnalkodiâ and âMukilinteâ) land back-to-back. If âDarshanaâ has an upbeat sound, âOnakka Munthiriâ stands out for its peppiness, whereas âManasseâ glows in its classic melody reminding us of the yesteryears.

To give away what might not appeal to a few, Hridayam is not a film for story-seekers. It is an ever-so-familiar template, especially if you have lived in Chennai, has gone through the chaos of an engineering college, or have shifted to an entirely different profession (I have done the last two). It is in Vineeth Sreenivasanâs indulgent manifestation of a coming-of-age romance that the film scores big. I somehow wish the heroic portions did not exist. Be it Kedarâs (Abishek Joseph George) chapter or the ones involving the ragging scenes. They do not excite, engage or add anything substantial to the film â neither humor nor drama. When the film is busy establishing its leading man as an ordinary youngster, it feels dated to have his physical strength underscored. The suspense surrounding the campusâs âSecret Alleyâ is another track that doesnât work the way the filmmaker desires.
While I didnât mind the diabetic sweetness surrounding Selvaâs character, it expands further into the final acts wherein we observe excess goodness on display. Hridayam also significantly slows down once Arun and Nithya forge a stable relationship. It is as if the writer was itching to land friction with the third leg in the story (Darshana) but was taking his sweet time to get there. I wouldnât say the pace is an issue here as the film is watchable even in these portions. However, the tonal drift is apparent until Darshana appears in the pre-climax.
Vineeth Sreenivasan employs tropes that are common in Tamil filmmaker Gautham Menon’s filmography â including nostalgia and women who gleefully dress up to look appealing to their men. The filmmaker and the DOP (Viswajith Odukkathil) capture the lived-in beauty of Chennai. Hridayam invites us to feel the poise of Marina Beach besides giving us a tour of the ghettos where an affectionate ‘paatti’ (grandmother) serves delicious âsambhar saadhamâ . Similar to Menonâs films, there are no villains in the plot. There are gigantic twists that quietly outline the hero’s evolution.
In the epicenter of Hridayam is Pranav Mohanlal, who is extremely easy on the eyes. The actor uses his soulful face and composed screen presence to confidently hold the film together. Darshana Rajendran, whose characterization reminds me of Parineeti Chopraâs in Meri Pyaari Bindu , stuns in an avatar we have never seen her before. Add to it the way the writer romanticizes her air, itâs impossible to not fall for her. Kalyani Priyadarshan makes full use of her spunk to deliver a sprightly act, almost threatening to topple Pranav in the more serious moments. The supporting cast is perfect with Aswath Lal providing light humor throughout. Annu Antony shines in a scene that allows her to whereas Aju Varghese is effortless in an important cameo. The parentsâ (Vijayaraghavan, Johny Antony) angle, although adorable in parts, feels undercooked. For instance, we understand why a rather generic train station scene exists between Arun and his father, but it is too hurriedly laced into the proceedings. This reminds me how cleverly Bangalore Days integrated parents into an all-youth film and Premam for avoiding their existence entirely.
Vineeth Sreenivasanâs film, without an iota of doubt, is his careerâs finest directorial effort. The writing might feel a little wayward in places but the film feels too personal to not be moved. Being one of the rare Malayalam makers to understand the syntax of film music, he renders Hridayam a grand aural treat. So much so that we thank our stars that the film is out in the cinemas and not on one of those streaming channels with the dreaded pause and fast-forward buttons. Although I wish Hridayam had avoided a few sidetracks to make it way shorter, the film is immensely enjoyable for its unique temperament and rich emotions at play.

'Hridayam' movie review: Vineeth Sreenivasan delivers two feel-good films for the price of one
I had two concerns before going into Hridayam. Its length and the 15 songs in it. Having seen the film, I can say that I canât imagine it without that length and those songs.
Itâs the appetizer before the buffet. If you're already familiar with the album, you'll like them even more once you see their placement in the film.
There were six songs that I wasn't floored by when I first heard them, but I began to appreciate them after getting a sense of the context. Iâm listening to the soundtrack as I write this review because I want to remember the details.
(I liked how Vineeth uses the film's title in place of 'Interval')
Although it employs the familiar coming-of-age tropes, Vineeth makes them seem fresh again.
It's that time before smartphones became a fashion - when your phones looked more like a video game console.
It's that time when you interacted with non-Malayalis for the first time. Itâs that time when seniors tell you that the grill safeguarding your hostel corridor is useless because they will catch you and rag you no matter what. Arun goes through it all.
We have all had those moments in our late 20s or early 30s where we remember the people we met during our college life (batchmates to professors to canteen guys to wardens), and we wonder what happened to those who - good or bad - shaped our formative years. Sometimes you learn that the person you hated the most back then has now turned into someone with whom youâd like to hang out.
When you get to know someone close, you learn that they are not the raging jerk you assumed they were. Some of them donât change and get worse as they grow older.
It's a film that doesnât believe in dwelling on past mistakes.
In most films involving a love story, itâs the guys who usually have difficulty moving on. This time, it's a girl. But even she will eventually muster the strength to begin the next phase of her life. Better late than never, right?
Oh, I forgot to add one more initial concern - of Pranav Mohanlal fitting into a film of this nature. I was curious to see how a filmmaker like Vineeth Sreenivasan would handle him. The 'Darshana' song had already given us a faint glimmer of hope.
But how would he do in the entire film? I'm happy to report that Pranav delivers in spades. Pranav gets the transformation - from flawed and rebellious to mature and responsible - right.
You'll get your answer in the filmâs third act.
But Pranav, Kalyani and Darshana are not the only inspired casting choices in Hridayam. The guy who plays Arun's best friend - I don't know his name - is excellent too. Vineeth gives him a fair share of comical and emotional moments that make him endearing.
I can tell that he has a great future ahead of him. Also terrific are all the actors cast as Arun's batchmates. (One of the actors, Arun Kurian of Anandam-fame, is already familiar to us.) And Vineeth brings his trademark sense of humour in certain situations that you first expect to have a serious outcome.
And when you have the incredibly hilarious Johny Antony playing Nithya's father, you know from where she got her sense of humour. Speaking of supportive parents, Vijayaraghavan plays Arun's dad. A railway station conversation scene brought back memories of talking to my father at the Thalassery railway station moments before I boarded a train headed for Chennai's Egmore station.
As a coming-of-age drama, Hridayam is to Vineeth Sreenivasan what Premam was to Alphonse Puthren. (If given a choice, I would easily pick Hridayam over Premam.) It's one of those films I wanted to hug once the end credits started rolling.
I also wanted to hug Vineeth for making a film with so many heartwarming moments and then daring to release it at a time when everyone is constantly troubled by concerns over a raging pandemic and the restrictions imposed. I badly needed this film. Thank you, Vineeth Sreenivasan and friends.

A 'not to miss' college nostalgia tale.
The film does fall under the category of some of the other films like Premam, Autograph and Kirik Party but has its own uniqueness in most aspects. In fact, it may even have a lot more relatable factors for those who studied at an Engineering college within Chennai. The USP though, being the secret alley and the climax that would surely touch one and all! (more)

Malayalam Rom-Coms Like Premalu
By Aditi Rathi
The latest Malayalam rom-com Premalu has taken several film industries in India by storm. Featuring a simple love story of the modern era, the movie is receiving a lot of love from the audience. After initially being released in Malayalam, the movie has been dubbed in a few other languages. It revolves around a young man named Sachin who falls in love with a bubbly girl named Reenu . While their story is not a usual one, it has a more practical ending, unlike other romantic movies. Here is a list of more Malayalam rom-coms like Premalu.
Premam is undoubtedly one of the most iconic Malayalam rom-coms. It not only received critical acclaim, but its commercial success was also gigantic. Nivin Pauly played the lead in the movie, which also had an extensive star cast. It included Anupama Parameswaran, Sai Pallavi, Shabareesh Varma, Krishna Sankar, and more. Alphonse Puthred helmed the film, while Anwar Rasheed Entertainments bankrolled it. The movie ran in Kerala theaters for 175 days and 300 days in Tamil Nadu.
Premam rightly captures the essence of modern love in a complicated story. Its plot revolves around George, who navigates through life after a heartbreak. When he meets Malar, his interest in love rekindles and he goes through various phases of life.
Bangalore Days
The 2014 film Bangalore Days is a Malayalam rom-com with the right amount of drama. The movie follows the story of three cousins living in Bangalore for three different reasons. From their bond and love lives to the troubles in their personal lives, the film explores many emotions. Nivin Pauly, Dulquer Salmaan, and Nazriya played lead roles in the movie. Fahadh Faasil, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Isha Talwar, and others played key roles.
The filmâs official synopsis reads, âThree cousins â Divya, Kuttan, and Arjun â have always dreamt of living in Bangalore. When they get there, they end up discovering their true selves.â
Anjali Menon directed Bangalore Days, while Gopi Sundar gave its music. The movieâs IMDb rating is 8.3 out of 10.
Much like Premam, Hridayam is also one of the most beloved Malayalam rom-coms. Apart from all the romance and comedy, the movie is an emotional rollercoaster with a lot of drama. Pranav Mohanlal, Kalyani Priyadarshan, and Darshan Rajendran play the lead role in the movie directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan.
The 2022 rom-com follows the story of a youngster who has a problematic college life. He falls prey to bad habits during his graduation and yet grows up to become a responsible man. Check out the movieâs trailer here:
Nivin Pauly and Trisha led the 2018 film, Hey Jude. Shyamaprasad helmed the film, while Ambalakkara Global Films produced it. Despite being titled as a feel-good romance comedy, the movieâs box office did not come out to be impressive. However, it is still a special movie that many fans revisit.
Hey Judeâs plot revolves around a mathematical genius named Jude. While he is an introvert, his life changes when he meets Crystal, a musician. The movieâs official synopsis reads, âThe story centers around two oddball characters- one is a youngster from Fort Kochi named Jude  and the other, a talented singer from Goa named Crystal.â Much like Premalu, the movie also has a couple whose personalities are poles apart yet they complete each other. Here is the movieâs trailer:
In conclusion, Premaluâs outstanding performance in theaters has grabbed a lot of attention. The movie has also been dubbed into Telugu and Tamil and is garnering millions. Apart from Premalu, the above-mentioned Malayalam rom-coms also received a lot of love from the audience. From emotional to feel-good, these rom-coms also touch various other genres.
Always lookin' for what's cookin', Aditi is a fan of American sitcoms and Indian cinema. The combination is as quirky as she is. Apart from writing all day, you can catch her playing with her street dogs, painting, or cooking.

Vineeth Sreenivasan regrets not being able to act alongside Vijay in GOAT

A ctor-director Vineeth Sreenivasan said that he had the opportunity to work with actor Vijay in the upcoming movie 'Greatest of All Time' but unfortunately could not take it up.
Vineeth revealed this in an interview to a Tamil YouTube channel ahead of the release of his next film 'Varshangalkku Shesham' that he had shown nil interest in working in Tamil and had turned down numerous opportunities.
“If you go to another industry and work with them, you can learn a lot. It would be a good experience if a director wanted me to work with him. It seems that it would be better to work in another language. Last year, there was an opportunity in Tamil. However, I couldn’t be part of it. It was not intentional,” he said.
“Sir Venkat Prabhu contacted me to discuss the filming of actor Vijay's upcoming movie 'Greatest of All Time'. However, I informed him that the shooting of my film is also scheduled to start in October. Venkat Prabhu is my favourite director. I wanted to be part of his film. Unfortunately, I couldn’t,” he revealed.
Vineeth Sreenivasan's ' Varshangalkku Shesham ', starring Pranav Mohanlal in the lead role is slated for release on April 11. The movie is the second collaboration between Pranav and Vineeth following the success of their previous film 'Hridayam'.

Hridayam Movie Review: Critics Rating: 3.5 stars, click to give your rating/review,Hridayam tries to give a realistic, coming-of-age depiction of a Malayali's campus life in Chennai
Songs composed by music director Hisham Abdul Wahab are already trending on social media and blend well in the movie also. Vishwajith Odukkathil's cinematography also makes the movie engaging. Another major drawback of the movie is the 172 minute running time. The length of the movie does not justify an empty plot.
The movie has an interesting emotional core, brought out by performances of Pranav, Darshana and others, which makes gentle tugs at the viewers' heartstrings. Pranav, who dominates through both the halves of the film, has definitely evolved as a stronger performer with Hridayam. There are many hearty songs in the film and they are all well-placed.

8/10. All heart. cinish 22 January 2022. Pranav Mohanlal is arriving as the young romantic heartthrob into malayalam cinema. It is a Vineeth Srinivasan movie - young, campus based, music based. Quite in line with "Thattathin marayathe pennu". To draw a comparison, Pranav has a whole lot more flair to offer than Nivin.

Hridayam briefly took me back to the 2015 breakthrough Malayalam hit Premam. Both character-driven and set significantly on campus, the coming-of-age template is not alien to Malayalam cinema. Vineeth's film, however, differs alarmingly in character design. His leading man, for starters, does not carry his wit on his sleeves.

Manjummel Boys, which is currently the highest-grossing Malayalam film, had houseful shows not just in Chennai, but in districts across Tamil Nadu, which is reason behind its whopping box collection of Rs 220 crore."For years now, in Kerala, big Tamil films would have 4 am shows.
