One Pokémon GO Update Would Make Catching New Pokémon So Much Better

How to get (& mega evolve) shiny mega heracross in pokémon go, pokémon go: every pokémon you can't trade (& why), quick links, pokémon go's shiny odds explained, certain raids in pokémon go are great shiny catching opportunities, why pokémon go's shiny chances are better than most.

  • Shiny rates in Pokémon GO differ from the main series games due to unique spawn and catch rates.
  • Pokémon GO has various events like Community Days that increase the chances of finding Shinies.
  • Raiding and participating in events provide excellent opportunities to catch Shiny Pokémon.

The chances for finding and catching a Shiny in Pokémon GO are quite different and more difficult than the regular odds in other titles of the Pokémon series. Internal calculations for deciding the percentage chance of discovering a Shiny Pokémon, as well as the catch rate protocols that follow, can make successfully catching one of these alternate-color variants incredibly difficult in ways that Shiny hunters coming over from console games may not even realize. Although many traditional Shiny hunting methods are ineffective in Pokémon GO, the game does make up for this in some ways.

Shiny Pokémon are unique because of their nonstandard color schemes. While they're nice to look at, they're not any stronger or harder to catch once the player finds them; a Shiny Pokémon will always have similar stats to the average Pokémon of its species. That said, Shinies are highly prized for their rarity. More than anything else, each one is a badge of the player's persistence, know-how, and luck. Here's how their spawn and catch rates work in Pokémon GO , and what players can do to find Shinies easily and more often.

Pokémon GO's Trading Problem Makes Shiny Hunting Even Worse

Pokémon GO’s social and long-distance features have been improved over the years, but trading is still a problem – especially for shiny hunters.

Base & Special Event Shiny Rates

The mainline series of Pokémon games features numerous aspects that can be manipulated by players to improve the odds of finding a Shiny Pokémon. These have been fine-tuned over the history of the franchise based on player feedback, and as it makes sense for each game. On the other hand, the odds of finding a Shiny in Pokémon GO can’t be affected by the trainer. Shiny rates in Pokémon GO can fluctuate, with special events such as Pokémon GO ’s Community Days having increased spawn rates for Shiny Pokémon appearances , and some raids and quests resulting in better chances.

Like other Pokémon games, Pokémon GO relies on a random number generator (RNG) system for determining if Pokémon found in the wild or encountered at the end of a raid will be Shiny, and each Pokémon's Shiny status is determined uniquely for each player. That means the same Squirtle seen by two people may be Shiny for one and not for the other.

Although the Pokémon GO community network, The Silph Road, shut down its website operations in 2023, an archive of Shiny odds calculated by The Silph Road still makes for the most exhaustive resource on this aspect of the game. These are the most recent findings, and while they are only estimates, enough data was involved in the calculations for an overall accurate result.

Community Day events, Timed Research events, and any ticketed event will give higher odds of finding a Shiny Pokémon of whichever creature is being highlighted at that time. Some events with optional tickets available for purchase may offer an increase in odds of finding Shinies , but it is important to always read the explanation of what is included in the ticket. Tickets for things such as the Pokémon GO Fest will state whether they include boosted Shiny rates during the event.

Pokémon GO gives players a fun incentive to get outside and go for a walk, but catching new Pokémon in the game could be a better experience.

Although the odds for Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon GO are high, trainers will have to actively seek them out. Pokémon on the overworld always appear in their regular coloration, so the only way to find out if they’re shiny is to enter a battle with them.

Clicking on a Pokémon in the wild will make that creature turn to face the trainer's avatar. If the trainer then backs out of the catch screen to continue checking others in the area without catching it, each of the Pokémon who have been clicked on will continue to face the trainer, thereby signaling who has already been checked.

This is also the case with Pokémon GO raid Pokémon, which always appear with their regular colors during the raid battle itself and will only appear shiny during the bonus challenge. Unsurprisingly, the same is true of Shadow Pokémon, which appear with normal colors when used by a Team Rocket member.

Raids Increase Shiny Appearance & Catch Rates

In general, when a trainer wants to increase their Shiny Pokémon collection in Pokémon GO , looking at some of the more difficult raids or participating in a Raid Day event is a great place to start. Raid events can provide a 1 in 10 chance of seeing a Shiny , while a regular, everyday Five-Star Raid can have a 1 in 20 chance. Mega Raids, which are often less difficult than Five-Stars, will also see the odds change to 1 in 128. Additionally, if the raid involves a Pokémon that is rare to spawn in the wild, such as a baby Pokémon, it will see a Shiny rate of 1 in 64.

Finding, catching, and Mega Evolving a Shiny Heracross in Pokémon GO can be a complicated task if you do not know where to start your search.

And besides just increasing the rates of Shinies appearing, most Pokémon GO raids actually make it easier to catch Shiny Pokémon , too . If a player hits a Shiny Pokémon with a Premier Ball during a raid or Team GO Rocket battle, they have a 100% chance of catching it. Shiny Pokémon aren't ordinarily any harder to catch than their non-Shiny counterparts. However, when randomly encountering a Shiny out in the wild, there's always the possibility of squandering that rare chance by running out of Poké Balls. Bringing a Premier Ball along on a raid can ensure the player catches a Shiny first time.

Less Control, Better Rates

Mainline Pokémon video games have much lower chances of finding a Shiny unless incorporating specific tactics to increase the chances. The original games started with a 1 in 8192 chance, approximately 0.01%, which required the use of things like objects such as Shiny Charm keys. Game-specific mechanics, like mass outbreaks in Pokémon Legends: Arceus , or chain fishing in the Gen 6 games could also increase the chances. Despite the various increases and unique methods of obtaining Shiny Pokémon, these elusive creatures have remained rare throughout the history of the Pokémon games.

On the other hand, Pokémon GO revolves around capturing many Pokémon for the sake of powering them up, so a higher Shiny rate can help continue a positive gameplay loop . Even in the circumstances where a trainer already has a particular Pokémon registered in their Pokédex and maxed out their CP, they will still want to check wild ones as they pass by just in case they encounter a Shiny. Shiny odds in Pokémon GO , therefore, benefit from being much higher than even Pokémon Legends: Arceus with all its methods of adding to the Shiny find rate.

Pokémon GO allows players to trade Pokémon, which effectively transfers them to others. Pokémon GO does not allow players to trade back, though.

Also, besides participating in raids and other limited events, it can be hard to control the rate of Shinies appearing. Other Pokémon games let players use certain items or strategies to maximize their Shiny probability, but in Pokémon GO , there aren't as many options to do so. Instead, Shinies are more common across the board, with occasional rate increases brought on by timed events. This pure rate increase balances out the general lack of control offered over finding or hatching Pokémon in the game.

New Shiny Pokémon come to Pokémon GO all the time, and any list of available Shinies quickly becomes incorrect or out-of-date. Although this can be disorienting at times, it also helps to keep the Shiny hunt in Pokémon GO fresh and surprising. Often, when Shiny Pokémon are introduced to the game, they will get their own Community Day, Raid hours, or special Research events to celebrate their inclusion into Pokémon GO , so it is always a good idea to keep an eye out for what event is coming up next.

Created by Niantic, Pokémon GO is an augmented reality RPG where players can wander around catching Pokémon as they pass by various landmarks in real life. Players can engage in a traditional Pokémon experience via battles with other trainers, catching Pokémon to breed new ones, and even trade them with other trainers they come across.

Shiny Pokémon are rare variants with different color palettes in Pokémon Go . For example, Mewtwo, who is normally various shades of purple, is green when he’s Shiny. Lugia, instead of being hues of blue, changes to different tones of red.

Not all Shiny forms are so easy to differentiate. For example, Elekid’s Shiny form is just a darker yellow. You can tell a Pokémon is Shiny by a little sparkle emblem appearing above the ‘mon when you’re going to catch them. It’s also visible as an icon in your list of Pokémon.

Shiny Pokémon are extremely rare and hard to find, but there are ways to maximize your odds. In our Pokémon Go guide, we’ll walk you through how to find Shiny Pokémon and the chances you’ll find one.

How do I catch a Shiny?

Shiny Pokémon can be encountered in the wild randomly. You can also get Shiny Pokémon from raids and as Field Research Task rewards . Pokémon can also hatch from eggs Shiny.

What’s the odds and rates for finding Shiny Pokémon?

According to the dedicated researchers over at The Silph Road , the regular Shiny rate is about 1 in 450. Rare spawns like Scyther or Pineco have a higher Shiny rate of 1 in 64.

The Shiny rate from Legendary raids is around 1 in 20, if that Pokémon has a released Shiny form.

Community Days have an increased Shiny rate for the featured Pokémon, sitting at approximately 1 in 25.

Are there any benefits to having a Shiny Pokémon?

Not particularly! Shiny Pokémon don’t have better stats or specifically good IVs. Battle-wise, they’re as good as any other Pokémon you’d catch. Shinies are just for collection and clout among other trainers.

What Pokémon have available Shiny forms in Pokémon Go ?

Shiny Pokémon typically get added to the game through events. After the event ends, the Shiny Pokémon gets permanently added to the game’s pool. You can see a complete list of the available Shiny Pokémon on Leek Duck .

Shiny odds for research quest encounters?

Does anybody know if the shiny odds are better for research quest encounters? I want to complete the research quests but there's no point in wasting my resources if the shiny odds are the same as wild encounters.

The only shiny pokemon I ever got from doing researches is squirtle, but that was thanks to the boost of shiny during community day.

I have caught tens of Mareep this month but none of them is shiny. Occasionally caught some Granbull, Houndour, Larvitar, Gen 1 starters and no shiny as well.

I caught 4 Absol through research encounters and had one as a shiny, but I've not had luck with anything else. I guess TSR are looking into this as part of their shiny research though.

The Silph Road did some research and the chance of a shiny from a quest is something like 1/60 I think.

Wild catches, outside of community days (and other specials, like the Roselia weekend), is supposed to be about 1/500.

This was only true for Aerodactyl and absol. The rest have rates similar to wild Pokemon. Pineco might also have a boosted rate but it's too early to tell.

Anecdotally, I've gotten my Shiny Aerodactyl and my Shiny Pineco from Research tasks, on an extremely small amount of tasks. (5 for the Aerodactyl, 2 so far for the Pineco) So it might be true that the Pineco shiny rate is boosted.

Shiny odds for most species is exactly the same from research or wild. Magikarp, starters, Eevee, Larvitar etc. I've done a ton of research and gotten 1 Bulbasaur out of these "normal" shinies.

Event quests may have heightened chances of shinies, so far this has applied to Aerodactyl and possibly Pineco. Those odds were 1/60 for Aerodactyl like Skywalkered said, no data yet if Pineco has the same odds.

Squirtle CD research was special, as randomly decided stops would give a shiny sunglass Squirtle for everyone.

The World of Wonders Season is coming to an end in Pokémon Go. Enjoy the last event - Ultra Space Wonders - and complete the final stage of World of Wonders , so you can evolve Poipole into Naganadel! You can also work on the Masterwork Research: Catching Wonders quest for a Master Ball and Glitz and Glam quest for a Diancie. Don't forget to try out Routes , Gift Exchange and Party Play while you're hunting down rare Pokémon , fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases .

Here are tips which will help you complete the Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto Special Research in Pokémon Go:

  • While this special research questline doesn't have a deadline, it is easier to complete during the actual Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto event , thanks to the increased spawn rate for certain Pokémon.
  • Remote Raid Passes now allow you to partake in raids from the comfort of your own home. You can even pick up some free Remote Raid Passes during the Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto event.
  • If you want to quickly earn some hearts with your Pokémon buddy , try feeding it berry treats, playing with it or giving it a Poffin.
  • Having trouble with Nice Throws ? Find a Pokémon with a large catch radius like Mr. Mime, because this will make it easier to judge your throws.
  • If you're having trouble finding a variety of Pokémon species, then try placing one of the special Lure Modules - Glacial, Magnetic or Mossy - at a PokéStop. Each of these modules will attract a different type of Pokémon, making it easier to you to find a wide variety of creatures.
  • Incense will also attract Pokémon to your location, allowing you to find a wider range of Pokémon.

Pokemon GO: How To Get Shiny Mareanie And Shiny Toxapex

Pokemon GO players are more likely to get Shiny Mareanie during events featuring Mareanie. You can encounter Mareanie and its Shiny variant as a wild spawn or by completing specific Research tasks. Catching a Shiny Mareanie can directly lead to getting a Shiny Toxapex.

Shiny Mareanie and Shiny Toxapex debuted during the Pokemon GO Ultra Space Wonders event on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 10:00 AM Local Time . The event boosts Mareanie’s wild spawn rate, which can help match its Shiny odds. You can also use a strategic approach to increase the already boosted wild spawn rate to fortify the chances of a Shiny encounter. That said, this guide explores the best method to get a Shiny Mareanie and Shiny Toxapex in the game.

Pokemon GO: How To Get Shiny Mareanie

Pokemon GO developers have set Mareanie as a wild spawn, Research task encounter, and Collection Challenges reward during featured events. Completing the Research quests and Collection Challenges during events like the Ultra Space Wonders can reward a Shiny Mareanie encounter. While the Shiny encounter isn’t guaranteed, you can complete the associated tasks and hope for a Shiny encounter.

Regarding wild Shiny Mareanie, events featuring the monster boost the Standard Mareanie wild spawn rate and increase the chances of encountering a Shiny. Players can also use different Pokemon GO items to boost the already increased Mareanie spawn rate. The more Mareanie you encounter, the faster you may catch up to its Shiny odds.

Lure Module, Incense, and Weather Boost can significantly increase wild Pokemon spawn rates. While Pokemon GO Incense and Lure Module need manual activation, the Weather Boost passively increases wild spawn rates based on specific weather conditions. Using these items together during events featuring Mareanie can notably boost its wild spawn rates.

Mareanie spawns more in places with cloudy and rainy weather. Look for a PokeStop or Gym within cloudy and rainy weather conditions , attach a Pokemon GO Lure Module , activate an Incense , and traverse around that place . This strategy can stack their effects, significantly boosting Mareanie’s wild spawn rate. Using these items simultaneously during events featuring the monster can further increase the already boosted wild spawn rate, which might aid in matching the Shiny odds.

Pokemon GO: How To Get Shiny Toxapex

Once you catch a Shiny Mareanie, you can get a Shiny Toxapex in Pokemon GO . Evolve the Shiny Mareanie into a Shiny Toxapex at the cost of 50 Mareanie Candy . You can collect the required amount of in-game Candy by catching and transferring numerous Mareanie, the Buddy System, or completing featured Research tasks.

Note the "species-dependent shiny rate hypothesis" section.
