The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (Shorenstein APARC) addresses critical issues affecting the countries of Asia, their regional and global affairs, and U.S.-Asia relations. As Stanford University’s hub for the interdisciplinary study of contemporary Asia, the Center produces policy-relevant research, provides education and training to students, scholars, and practitioners, and strengthens dialogue and cooperation between counterparts in the Asia-Pacific and the United States.

The Korea Program at Shorenstein APARC focuses on issues such as North Korea and inter-Korean relations, cooperation and security in East Asia, and the social, economic, and political forces affecting South Korea’s present and shaping its future. We collaborate with academic and policy institutions in Korea and elsewhere, and publish books, policy reports, and journal articles.

The Stanford Next Asia Policy Lab (SNAPL), a new initiative committed to addressing emergent social, cultural, economic, and political challenges in Asia through interdisciplinary, problem-oriented, policy-relevant, and comparative studies and publications.  The lab functions as a platform that facilitates network-based collaboration with academic and policy research institutions in Asia.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Research Associate, reporting to the Korea Program and SNAPL Director, will collaborate with the Korea Program faculty, and researchers.  S/he will undertake academic research projects regarding Korean Studies and Social Sciences, identify possible areas of research and evaluate research needs to address important and relevant policy issues related to Korea and Asia. 

On the research side, s/he will be responsible for identifying and evaluating potential research topics related to Korea and Asia; developing and undertaking research projects together with the Program Director; drafting/co-authoring content of the research projects and/or opinion pieces for media outlets; keeping up to date with research literature and Korean and Asian current affairs relevant to the Program’s research initiatives. On the programmatic side, this position will be responsible for assisting the Program Director in preparation for meetings, conferences, and classes; organizing events and conferences of the Korea Program; acting as a liaison between the Program and external partners or collaborators; and providing logistic support to the Program whenever requested and necessary. This position also occasionally requires traveling (domestic and international) for field research and/or to attend meetings and conferences. 

This is a 100% FTE, fixed term position. The term concludes two years from the start date and may be extended based on program need and funding availability.

Job description

The applicant will support the experiments of the following research project: “Advancing the Theory of Nonequilibrium Catalytic Reaction Networks”, which is funded by JST Fusion Oriented REsearch for disruptive Science and Technology (FOREST). More concretely, the applicant will measure the rates of enzymatic reactions and/or metabolic networks and perform surrounding tasks, such as expression and purification of recombinant enzymes using E. coli, chemical analysis using HPLC and colorimetry, and data analysis and management. The project is expected to end on March 31, 2029.

The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.

Qualification

  • Experience in analytical chemistry or biochemistry is required.
  • The candidate should be able to communicate smoothly with collaborators both inside and outside the research team, and work in cooperation and collaboration with them.

Salary and benefits

  • 1. A one-year fixed-term employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, to a maximum of March 31, 2029.
  • 2. RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, workload at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 70 years.
  • 3. In principle, the center is set to continue its research to the end of the Mid- to Long-term Plan (7 years from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2025). However, if it is decided that the research project with which the Employee is involved will not be continued, the above provision on continuation of the “research center, laboratory or project” applies and there will be no re-employment for FY 2025 (from April 1, 2025)

In principle, the first two months of employment is considered a trial period. DESCRIPTION

The Department of Anesthesiology employs over 200 academic and staff personnel and has an annual operating budget of $40 million in annualized resources between Practice Plan Revenues, VAMC funding, Hospital and Medical Group Funding, UC Foundation, Research Sources and School of Medicine Funds. There are over 80 clinical faculty, 12 Ph.D, faculty and post docs, 41 residents, 16 clinical fellows, 27 Certified Nurse Anesthetists, 1 Physician Assistant and four bargaining units represented. The Department provides Clinical Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Services at Hillcrest, Thornton, Shiley, Children's and the VAMC. The Department operates a Pain Clinic at Perlman. The Department's research programs include bench and clinical research programs located at the VAMC, MTF, CTF, BSB, Hillcrest, Thornton and Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine.

Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, incumbent will perform a variety of cellular and molecular techniques. Responsibilities include preparation of RNA for next generation sequencing, preparing and maintaining primary cell cultures, immunohistochemistry, FACS sorting and confocal imaging. The position requires detail-oriented observations and accurate record keeping. Responsible for providing the Principle Investigator with a written assessment of experimental outcomes. Participates in the planning of new and existing experiments, by studying available literature, then analyzing, troubleshooting and altering conditions under which determinations are made. Responsible for general laboratory maintenance including organization of lab materials, maintaining laboratory databases, placing supply orders, drafting and maintaining animal protocols and assisting with maintaining laboratory equipment. Willingness to teach and collaborate with PhD and Master level graduate students and visiting scholars in technical studies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Theoretical knowledge of a life science as typically acquired by a Bachelor’s degree in the field of molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering or genetics or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience preparing and maintaining tissue derivation, ESC derivation, micro-dissection, tissue cultures. Knowledge of sterile techniques and culture media/reagents. Demonstrated ability to perform routine RNA isolation and analysis. Experience with basic protein chemistry techniques.

Ability to maintain supplies and consumables for medium size laboratory and its core facilities including meticulous record keeping of ordered and received materials.

Experience in maintaining general laboratory equipment (e.g. centrifuges, water baths, etc. and specialized equipment (i.e., OROBOROS, Seahorse, Immunofluorescence, Confocal Microscopy)

Knowledge of EH&S procedures for laboratory safety.

Intermediate to advance computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Graphpad Prism, Imaris, Image email system and a variety of web based programs (Genbank).

Ability to efficiently manage time and organizational skills. Ability to establish priorities, meet multiple and frequently changing deadlines with flexibility. Detail oriented.

Job Summary:

The Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology (GI) is seeking a Research Specialist to provide comprehensive project support services to faculty conducting clinical research. This position will work closely with investigators, clinical research coordinators, industry sponsors, contract research organizations and others to ensure research activities align with objectives and sponsor timelines. The GI Division is within the Department of Medicine (DOM), in the School of Medicine and Public Health. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Freddy Caldera), the incumbent will work with research teams (faculty, clinical research coordinators, research administrators, collaborating sites, sponsors, etc.) to manage task timelines, participant recruitment, data collection/management, produce project communication materials, draft research reports, engage in study planning, purchase project materials, and troubleshooting project obstacles. This position will serve as the primary contact for regulatory and fiscal personnel, sponsors, and additional study team members. Candidates must feel comfortable in a timeline driven role, be self-motivated and be highly detailed-oriented with excellent organizational skills. This position interacts with many different teams and customers and assists in identifying and implementing quality improvements to ensure that processes are efficient and timely. Attention to detail, time management and excellent organization will be critical to the success of this position. The incumbent is expected to follow the policies, procedures, guidelines for excellence and professionalism established by the Department of Medicine, SMPH Clinical Trials Institute and the University of Wisconsin. Additionally, this position will ensure that all clinical research activities adhere to Federal, State, and University policies, procedures, and requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • 10% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • 10% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
  • 10% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • 15% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • 20% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • 15% Performs literature reviews and writes reports
  • 10% Assists with proofreading, editing, and uploading manuscripts
  • 10% Plans, develops, and implements processes and protocols to support research aims. Attends research meetings as needed/assigned.

Preferred Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience 

Qualifications:

Required: - One or more years of experience working in a clinical health setting and/or one or more years of experience in clinical, health services, or social sciences research environment - Reading and understanding of research principles and methodology and ability to apply that knowledge to a clinical research environment. - Ability to listen, understand and communicate information and ideas effectively in writing, over the phone or in person. - Excellent time management skills. Ability to work independently or collaboratively, and manage multiple projects despite interruptions, while closely tracking details and looking for ways to improve processes. Preferred: - Work experience in human research, patient care, or a clinical research environment. - Experience in coordinating clinical research studies from various departments and sources. - Demonstrated experience in scheduling, coordinating, and conducting visits and study meetings. - Experience with research data collection and management; including use of REDCap data collection software.

License/Certification:

Preferred Drivers License - Valid Travel is required. Must provide a valid driver's license. Employees may use their own transportation or receive approval for University Car Fleet usage.
