History of Lahore

History of Lahore

It is written in the holy book of Hindus that the city of Lahore was settled by Loh, son of Ram. This is the reason that Lahore is known as Lahore. Other than this, the oldest history of Lahore is first mentioned in the book “Hudood-ul-Alam,” published in 982 AD. Shah Hussain Miran Zanjani, the famous spiritual personality, along with his two brothers, visited Lahore in the same period.

How Lahore Became the Important City

Shortly after his arrival, Mahmud Ghaznavi defeated the Hindu Raja Jayapal and captured Lahore, and Mahmud Ghaznavi’s slave Ayaz built a fort at Lahore for the first time. After that, an important milestone in the history of Lahore was the construction of Sher Shah Suri’s Lahore GT Road. With the construction of this road, the city of Lahore was not only connected with the important cities of the subcontinent, but after its completion, the importance, fame, and breadth of Lahore city continued to increase. If we study the history of Lahore city, a very strange situation emerges.

Highs and Lows in the History of Lahore

At one time, Lahore was counted among the most beautiful cities globally, and at another time, this city was a victim of looting and destruction.

When the Tatars looted and destroyed the city of Lahore, the Mughals rebuilt the city and made it one of the most beautiful and developed cities in the world. A wall was built around the city, and 12 entrances were made. The river flowed outside the wall, and a beautiful garden was made along the river. Eternal buildings like Badshahi Mosque, Fort Lahore, Shalamar Bagh, Jahangir’s Tomb, and Wazir Khan Mosque built during the Mughal period are still a source of pride for Lahore city.

The Sikh era, especially the era of Ranjeet Singh, destroyed the beauty of this city again. For centuries, many Muslim nobles and nobles, in particular, were forced to flee the city, and many of the city’s beautiful historic buildings, shrines, and mosques could not escape looting.

At the end of the long dark century, from 1750 to 1850, when the British took over the rule of Punjab, a new chapter of development of Lahore opened. The British started the construction of many modern buildings in Lahore. Railway Station, Punjab University, Town Hall, District Court, Government College, Museum, High Court, GPO, Montgomery Hall, Aitchison College, Conrad College, Mayo Hospital, Mayo School of Arts, (later National College of Arts) Tollenton Built markets, assembly halls, and countless other buildings. These buildings have a beautiful blend of British, Mughal, and Islamic cultures.

The 55 years from 1860 to 1915 proved to be a period of peace, development, and prosperity for the people of Lahore. During this British period, a modern, beautiful, and new Lahore emerged outside the wall. Undoubtedly, this was the period of development and rise of Lahore.

The Railway system in Lahore started in 1861. Electricity was provided in Lahore city in 1912. The telephone system started. Wide paved roads, sewerage system, supply of clean drinking water, a municipal committee for sanitation, Lahore Improvement Trust for construction of settlements under urban planning, the judicial system for the provision of justice and general. A wide range of schools, colleges, and universities was started to provide education.

Why Lahore is so Famous

Lahore is famous for some reasons. You cannot state a single reason for its popularity. Let us look at some of the reasons one by one. Pakistan’s second-largest city is Lahore, known as Zinda Dalan Lahore’s Zinda Javed, and it is called City of Colleges, City of Flowers, City of Parks, and Film City (Bollywood).

This city, which has the unique honor of “Data Ki Nagri,” was settled by a Hindu king, “Lahut,” on the banks of the river Ravi about a thousand years ago today. Thanks to this, it has gained international, historical, and political significance today.

Another reason for its popularity is that it is simultaneously an ancient and modern city. It has a beautiful combination of historic buildings. ۔

Lahore is also famous for its food. These include Kashmiri Gate’s Gol Gruppe and Dahi Bhalla, Anar Kali Ki Kher, Regal Chowk’s Saleem, Shahi Mohalla’s Pahja’s Sree Paaye, besides these Lahore dishes include Tabaq, Charsi Tikka, Danba Karahi, Ludo Pethiyan, Keema Walay Naan, Pathura, Bong, Nahari, and Chakkar Chhole are very popular.

Pakistan’s largest food street adjoins the southern wall of the Badshahi Mosque, where Barbie cuisine and fast-food items are always ready to enchant domestic and foreign tourists, as well as Lakshmi Chowk and Old Anarkali.

In the vast area of Greater Iqbal Park, Minar, Pakistan, a 200 feet high monument is located. This minaret has been built on the exact spot where the chair of Quaid-e-Azam presided over 79 years ago. On March 23, 1940, when the resolution was passed by a large gathering of nearly 300,000 Muslims at the annual meeting of the Lahore All India Muslim League.

A short distance south of Minar, Pakistan, is the second-largest mosque in Pakistan, the Badshahi Mosque, where about 100,000 Muslims can pray at a time.

Suppose you want to understand the city of Lahore. In that case, you can understand it by the two famous sayings about Lahore: “Jine Lahore nahin dekhya o jamya e nai” this famous Punjabi quote means that If you don’t visit Lahore, you have not been born yet. Another saying about Lahore is, “Seven days and eight fairs, how can I go home.” It means that there is so much fun in Lahore that I don’t have time to go home

My Favourite Tourist Destination: The Lahore Fort

Ammara Maqsood | Mandi Bahauddin, Pakistan

essay in urdu about lahore

My favourite tourist spot is Lahore, for the famous “Shahi Qila”, also known as the Lahore Fort. It is said that “Lahore is Lahore” (Lahore, Lahore hai) and the Lahore Fort is one of the reasons behind this saying. As life is moving towards modernism, the old building of the Lahore Fort gives a strong historical and peaceful vibe in the city.

In terms of its place in history, the Lahore Fort connects us with the Mughal Era. It is a sequence of noble palaces, halls and gardens built by Mughal rulers Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, comparable to and contemporary with the other great Mughal forts at Delhi and Agra in India. It's believed that the site covers some of Lahore's most ancient remains. Unfortunately, it is unknown when exactly the Lahore Fort was originally constructed or by whom, but you can read more about the history behind the Fort's creation and changes made to it over time, here .

I like to visit this site because I am inclined to visit old buildings. In addition, I have really good memories associated with my very first tour of the Lahore Fort so this place is very close to heart.

The entrance of the Lahore Fort is a demonstration of art. It has been divided into various notable structures and monuments that are a brilliant representation of the architectural styles of Mughal Kings from Akbar to Aurangzeb. One most respectable portions of the Fort is the Iqbal Tomb, where Iqbal the Poet of the East is buried. Many people visit to pay their respects to him too. He was one of Pakistan's founding fathers and is known for coming up with the original idea of creating Pakistan.

I have also visited the Lahore Fort with my friends during a university trip and again, I loved the architecture. Those vast courtyards and stairs make you feel like as you are living in era of kings and queens. One can visualize how everything was settled there for royal families. Perhaps the design of some parts can be revised to give a modern look but one can hear the story of royal ages through the old bricks and ancient architecture. The Lahore Fort is a famous tourist destination for the people in Pakistan along with tourists from other parts of the world. Many foreigners also come to visit the Fort and I saw many there during my visit too.

Here are some of pictures from my visit to the Lahore Fort:

Lahore has been a subject of fascination for writers and historians through the ages. They have penned down its history, architectural design and cultural activities throughout its different stages of development as a city of international fame and repute. The rule of various Emperors, Kings and Rajas over Lahore, the Rajputs, the Muslims, the Sikhs and last but not least the British have also been chronicled by the historians and researchers. Recently a new book on Lahore by Shahid Imtiaz has appeared to capture the attention of the students and scholars of both history and literature.

This paper focuses Lahore as an amorphous city as it emerged in the last decade of the 19 th and the first decade of 20 th centuries under the British Raj. The emphasis, undoubtedly, falls upon the study of those diverse and diversified forces, social, political, cultural and religious that shaped Lahore as an amorphous city. It was the interaction and intermingling of the similar and the dissimilar, the colonizer and the colonized, the indigenous and the foreign elements, concepts, thoughts and ethos that contributed to make both the city and its inhabitants amorphous. For this purpose I have chosen Dina Nath’s The Two Friends: A Descriptive Story of Lahore Life (1899) and Rudyard Kipling’s Kim (1901) which to me are true representative novels of their time as they take to the narrow and winding interior of the walled city and also to the modern colonial Lahore which the British designed in accordance with the colonial desire. These novels also give us two contrasting perspectives ...

Punjab has been an important frontier of the processes of state formation in South Asia. Located in-between the states in Afghanistan and Gangetic plains of north India, the region was both enriched and bore the brunt from either side. It is significant to underline the complex relationship that contemporary Sikh historiography has with Afghans and Mughals, a relationship which predominantly emerged in the period from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, coinciding with the advent of Guru Nanak and later advent of the Khasla Raj, a state under Ranjit Singh. Even before Babur’s conquest of Punjab in 1526, the region had a major share of urban centres that were deeply connected to important trade routes from Sindh to Multan to Delhi, and from Peshawar to Lahore to Sirhind to Delhi. These urban centres linked Punjab with trade and cultures of the Arabian Sea, Persia and Central Asia in the west, and Kashmir, Rajputana, Gangetic plains, and the Deccan in India. The bars (upland forested uncultivated areas) of the five doabs (land between two rivers) of Punjab which were predominantly forested and uncultivated pastures during the Sultanate period were gradually socially, economically and politically transformed by the Mughal period.

The modern state of Pakistan stands on a land that was once perhaps among the most significant crossroads in human history. This means that, aside from the multitude of nations who crossed this region, these lands have also seen the crossing of many great kings accompanied by vast armies, all of whom were put to the test against the valour of the locals who sought to defend their motherland. One such tale of bravery comes from the year 1241 CE, when massive hordes of the Mongols poured into Punjab and descended on the ever-illustrious city of Lahore. As the city walls started to crumble before the Mongols, the ordinary people of Lahore, without a leader and army, surrounded on all sides, raised their swords in defiance and did something which hitherto had never been done by any nation facing the Mongols. The Mongol attack on Lahore in 1241 CE, facilitated by internal divisions within the Delhi sultanate, marked the beginning of increasing Mongol incursions into the Indus region that ultimately changed the course of South Asia

ILYAS CHATTHA

The city of Lahore had become one of the most important commercial and industrial centres in the Punjab by the end of British rule. Although Muslims constituted the majority of the population, it was, however, the Hindus and Sikhs who largely controlled economic activity in the city. Any territorial division of the province was likely to be grim not only for community relations but also for the city’s continued prosperity. Based on archival material, this paper firstly, seeks to explain Lahore’s colonial growth by demonstrating the ways in which the city’s urbanisation was stimulated by the development of civil lines, cantonment areas and migration, along with the ways in which its strategic location, boosted by the development of railways, assisted in its rise. It then looks at the impact of these structural changes and urban developments on the experiences of people and practices of trade and employment. Secondly, it outlines the role Hindu and Sikh trading classes were playing in...

Short essay on Lahore City

essay in urdu about lahore

Lahore city is the capital of the province of Punjab, in Pakistan. It is centrally situated and is generally known as “The Heart of Pakistan”, the city is located on the banks of river Ravi. It is also known as the “Green City” and is home to many gardens and fertile alluvial plains. The city is famous for its poets, artists and the core of the film industry.

The eccentric city dates back to 850 A.D., it was taken over by Mahmood Ghaznavi in 1021 A.D. and made the capital of the entire Ghaznavid Empire by Masud, the son of Mahmood. This was the point in history where Lahore became the heart of the social, cultural and educational events and these activities made the city reach the peak of its magnificence under the rule of the Mughal Empire. It was under the Mughals that the city got its beautiful fort, infamous architecture, gardens, tombs, mosques and pavilions. There are many ancient names recorded in history for Lahore which include Lahanoor, Mahmood pur, Loh pur, Lohar pur and Samnadpal Nagiri.

The population of this city with a colorful history is around 6.5 million and it is the second largest city of Pakistan. The city has been constructed in the formation of a parallelogram and the area within the walls of the city (central Lahore or Old Lahore) is about 461 acres. The exact location of the district is 31-34′ North latitude and 74 – 20′ East longitude. Regarding the weather in the city, there are two main seasons namely winter and summer. The monsoon season is at its peak during July and August, and the rain during these two months accounts for more than half the rain in the city. The driest months of the year in this city are October and November and the winter seasons in which the winter rains occur are from December to February. Hence there is plenty rainfall which makes the city’s gardens look even more beautiful than they already are.

One of the most famous architectures of the city is known as the Lahore Fort which was built during Mughal Rule by Akbar the Great. This king also constructed the city walls which had 12 gates, some of these gates exist even today. Jahangir the son of Akbar, and Shah Jehan the son of Jahangir have been the builders of Shalimar Gardens in Lahore, they also have constructed many tombs and places. Another great Mughal Ruler known as Aurangzeb has also constructed another famous architecture in Lahore known as the Badshahi Mosque. These constructions are not only divine and beautiful but also great tourist attractions for the city. In the times of the Mughal era the river Ravi which now is miles away from the city used to clash with the ramparts of the fort and the mosque. When the British came they nicely combined the Mughal, Gothic, Victorian styles of architecture in the city. The architecture, beautiful history and the mixed culture of the city makes it a dynamic and vibrant city, one not to miss a visit to if given the chance.
